April 2007

I am ready for a vacation! Time to take a few days off.

how to's

Dining_room_003 Last week, between shopping for a mattress and redoing my guest room, repainting the dining room chairs, figuring out how to do Ebay and trying to list a few things, feeding 15-20 people for 3 days straight while hosting a mini family reunion, and babysitting my 7mth old fairy grandbaby for over night- I also managed to redo a coffee table for my living room.

Here is the "before" picture of my table, I found it at a junk shop.  I probably paid too much for it ($15) in the condition that it was, but it was the exact size and shape I needed.Living_room_007

My living room was looking a tad too formal for me at this point, so I wanted a table that was leaning toward the rustic side, but still pretty, to make the room a bit more casual. This table already had a rough oak top, I sanded away all the stains on it, added some roses to the bare wood, a dry brush of white to the legs, and put a dark stain and poly over the entire thing, then wiped it off, for an aging effect and for protection.Living_room_006

Still haven’t made lighter slipcovers for the new sofa yet.  So, I sprayed it good with Scotchgard, knowing I’d never keep the little Dorkies off of it.  That is Sparkle making herself comfy on it now.  I changed out the pillows for lighter colors, that is a start. I found some fabric I like to cover the seat cushion, although I am not in a hurry to make them, I’ll get to it eventually.

But for now, I am leaving on vacation for a few days.  I am hitching a ride along with my husband on his business trip.  Cheap way to travel, the hotel and his meals are covered, and since he was driving anyway, it was practically free for me to go.  Depends on how much I eat I guess, and after all the Easter-feasting we did at the reunion, I’d say I shouldn’t eat too much.

But I probably will anyway.

I’m Just Taking a Break to get a Little Work Done- I am not hiding out from my guests!!!!!!! seriously)

hand painted signs

Signs_004 While the guests are gathered around the veggie trays and deviled eggs, I have taken a little break to list a couple new ebay items before I have to get the turkey out of the oven, because we are  going out of town tomorrow.  I am sticking with the schedule that Ebay Guru Beth-http://bethleintz.typepad.com/gathering_dust/ – has set me on, she is giving me assignments to follow and I am doing my best.  She has been the biggest help to me, and really isn’t at all bossy, just nicely encouraging to me.  If she would be a little bossier, I might have gotten listing sooner!  Well, procrastinating, or not marketing are both artist issues.  It is so much more fun to create than to try to sell.

I decided to list some more signs that I painted.  Here is one.  I love to make them, and never do 2 alike, even if it is the same phrase or colors, they all come out differently.  I also take requests….. that is, if you are interested?

Clueless but Cute

Some people consider my house slightly foo-fooed up.  I do have to admit there is a lot going on, and it is drenched in flowers. I paint watercolors of flowers and hang on the walls, I paint flowers on the furniture, on old shutters, on the floor, well everywhere.  And I go for what I think, are light and romantic colors.

I get asked how I live with a husband and two boys in such a flowery home.  I tell them that my husband never notices anything.  Actually, we quote Lonesome Dove and say he is "not a noticer."  Rich only notices changes if they are something too heavy for me to maneuver into the house alone and I have to cajole him into helping me.

Today we were at my sister-in-law’s as part of the big Nathan family weekend, with the house guests.  She had this magazine on the table, and I told my mother-in-law that my bedroom was in that issue. So, my husband starts to show her the pictures. Telling her in detail about the pages and what and where it all was in our house.  Well, he was looking at someone else’s home!! He didn’t even notice it wasn’t his house.  The thing is, he was actually telling her about how "this page was before we redid the attic room" and that page was "the old bedroom before we fixed it up for our grand baby".

Well, for one thing—WE?  I don’t think he has ever touched a paint brush in his life.  For another, does he even know what his own home looks like?  I guess he saw some pictures that had flowery pages and it looked close enough.  Although, he really was pretty sweet, when he was telling his mom how proud he was of me and how beautiful the rooms were.  Even though they weren’t my rooms, it was still sweet of him to brag about me to his mother.  And it was pretty cute.

I may have Dirty Floors, but I had a fun week!

Locket_006 Today was a blustery day in Kansas, a good day for the "virtual pot luck."   I ‘m glad I got to visit with everyone and not actually have to go outside!

I spent the morning listing some things on Ebay and checking out the various party hostesses.  Then, my house guests came early and I hadn’t swept the floors yet or done the dishes!Locket_011

It is so much more fun to do the pretty part of getting ready for company, setting up a new guest room and setting a table.

So, while I made  cups of tea and we talked, I got out the broom.  At my house, it is always casual.  As much as I love it to have sumptuous decor, it is always comfy and my guests are treated like family. Heck, they were lucky I didn’t hand them a broom!

Here are a couple of things I listed today on Ebay. I am still struggling with the best way to list, which key words, categories, etc.  Wish me luck.  So far, I am spending more on fees than I am actually making back.  But it is a learning curve…….?

You are in invited to a virtual pot luck today!  It is hosted by Shabby in the City and she has some Kentucky hospitality waiting for you at her place: http://shabbyinthecity.blogspot.com/

Living_room_013 Here at my cottage, the table is set for the get together.  I’ve used my art studio for the party instead of my dining room, so I can accommodate a crowd!  Easter_party_034

A long folding table that is coated with smears of paint, glitter, and glue, is covered with a fresh white table cloth to hide its true nature.Easter_party_021

A $15 thrift store table that I repainted white with all white flowers- daisies, viburnum, roses, lilies, iris, etc- is also a working table when not in use for parties.  It is nice and solid and makes a good sewing table, plus isn’t crusty with globs of dried glue and paint like all my folding tables, so is better for laying fabric out on.  But, as poorly as I sew, it doesn’t matter how stable the table, the seam is not going to be straight.

Easter_party_046 After being 81 and sunny on Monday, it has gotten down to 26 last night!  I went out and picked as many armfuls of lilacs that I could bring in and felt guilty for not saving each and every bud.

Easter_party_037 This wardrobe has had a lot of different incarnations.  At one time, I had painted cherub statues and topiaries on it and used it in my garden shed to hold shovels and rakes.  Easter_party_027

Now the wardrobe is painted with white roses on its doors.  I put 2 small tables in it, and use it for parties to serve wine and dessert.  For today, it is set up with Easter chocolates and cake.  This photo is the interior of the cabinet. I love this cabinet, it is so handy. I keep plastic silverware, napkins, coffee cups, and all those kinds of things under the table clothes so they are always on hand out in the studio and I don’t have to run back to the kitchen each time I need something like that when friends drop by to work on projects together.Easter_party_032

Sparkle is ready for the party, with her bunny ears on.  Well partially on, they seem to slip back on her head a bit.  could be all the head shaking she is doing, trying to get them off.

All the furniture out here is mix and match, whatever bargains I bought and fixed up and haven’t sold yet.  Used to be a bit of a revolving door, but since the road is closed in front of my house and I am not having sales right now, I haven’t been selling furniture.  This bench is one I can never sell, my son built it for me, from a Victorian headboard, then I painted the flowers on it.

Happy Easter weekend!  Hope you are enjoying all the goodies and get togethers, real and virtual!

Doesn’t Everyone Repaint for a Party???

Hand Painted Furniture

Dining_room_012Guests are coming this weekend, so I am gearing up for Easter and dinner parties.  Here is a close up of the dining room table center piece.

On Monday, http://shabbyinthecity.blogspot.com/ called for a "Virtual Potluck"  for tomorrow, Friday the 6th, because so many of us enjoyed the Virtual Tea Party that was hosted by http://www.artsymama.blogspot.com/ last month.  Since I am setting up for a big party weekend anyway, I thought I’d share some photos of the upcoming festivities as part of the pot luck.  I am not a recipe person, more of a pinch of this, dab of that cook, making things up as I go, so I won’t have a recipe to share, although I’ll be cooking for a houseful.  I think maybe 16 for dinner on Sat. night?

Dining_room_005  I did redo my dining room for this weekend, wanted it more Springy.  Doesn’t everyone repaint their chairs for a party???  I guess I don’t do it every time, and sometimes I simply switch out chairs from the vast collection I have throughout the house, studio, and garden shed.

When my son got married, I started a table and chair collection.  I bought them for months at garage sales and junk shops, painted them white and then set them up in the garden for the reception. I have since sold a lot of the tables, but kept a most of my favorite chairs.  My garage was packed with tables stacked up on top of themselves and chairs hanging from the rafters for a while. But why waste a garage on cars when you can fill it with cool junk?

Dining_room_009 Yesterday, I repainted the bench.  It was my mom’s from the 60’s, and I got it from her estate.  So I can never sell it, but I do get a little bit tired of it, and repaint it every year or so.  I am not one to keep things forever, unless they are extremely sentimental to me.  She made the blue cushion for it, sometimes I sew a little slip cover to put over it, but I always use it on the bench. I like to have things she made around me.

Two chairs got repainted yesterday and I found the cushions for them at TJMaxx for $7 each.  What a deal, can’t beat that place.Dining_room_016 The blue toile curtains are vintage and only cost $20 for the whole set of 4 panels!! I got them from a friend’s garage sale.

I went with bluebird and pink roses on this chair.  Both chairs have been numerous colors in the past, last incarnation was black, which really does well when painted over and then distressed. Dining_room_006

Mom’s bench got a lot of pizazz. Or just became gaudy?

Yes, I know this room won’t seat 16 people.  I will have to set up my art studio for the big dinner.  We’ll use this dining room for the smaller meals when the whole bunch doesn’t come.  I’ll post photos of the art studio/dining room tomorrow for the Virtual Potluck party.

Dining_room_023

Little Miss Sugar Wings, my fairy grand daughter, gets new dishes for Easter.  I found this set of fairy-ware for her.  Her parents won’t let her sit in the vintage high chair I found for her, they might be right about it not being safe for her now, but she’ll grow into it and will use it over the years.  I adore the chippy pink and blue paint ( I sealed it so it won’t come off for her to nibble on).  Can’t you picture a resourceful mom, years ago, repainting her son’s blue high chair when she has a daughter?

The painting on the wall behind the high chair is one that I did, I love to do paintings that look old fashioned, not new.

See you at the potluck tomorrow?

Who is the Dorky One?

yorkies

Berta_and_the_fairies_004 This week would have been the birthdays of Huberta Rose (Bertie) and Marty- two little Dorkies ( what I call Yorkshire Terriers)  who passed away last fall with in a few weeks of each other.

This is Bertie on the bench in my studio, she kept me company while I painted.Huberta_004

Here are Marty and Bertie together in one of my last photos of him.  He is named after my mother, Martha.  She is named after my father, Hubert. Both of my parents are gone now, also.

My Dad always wanted someone named after him, and when I was born, he put "Huberta Josephine" on my birth certificate.  My mother promptly changed it to Karla Jo.  I go by Karkie most of the time, tho.  Can’t imagine being a Huberta.

Storm_damage_family_reunion_sandys_

Once, when my sister-in-law was visiting from Tennessee, she and I had a morning of playing with her new camera and posing dogs for picturesStorm_damage_family_reunion_sandy_2 . It really tickled our funny bones and the pictures got sillier and sillier as we went on.  Sparkle (on the left, Marty’s mother) loved every second of the attention and would let us pose her any where.  Poor Marty (right) barely tolerated it and this is the only photo we got of him. In this one they are in a basket on the floor of my studio by a salvaged door I used as a divider.

Poor Sparkle, this might be one of the worst places we put her, on top of the entertainment center in my living room.  She was a good sport about it all.  She was on the fireplace mantel, on the wood stove, in a hat, dressed in a tutu and pearls, all sorts of things, from one end of the house to the other.  I guess that makes my visiting sis-in-law and I the true "Dorky" ones.  But I do believe that a good dose of silly is good for everyone, and I seem to get my fair share of it.

Although, all of you who left kind comments on my last post about my guest room, saying you’d like to come and visit might have second thoughts when you see how my guests and I spend our time!

Old Repainted Bargains for a New Guest Room

Hand Painted Furniture

When my son and his family moved out last fall, I went ahead and gave them all the furniture I had bought for the bedroom he had been using.  While the dresser and chest were antiques, and really nice, they were too nice too paint.  And I love painted furniture in my home.  He is a carpenter and loves wood grain, so it seemed safer to just give it to him before I couldn’t stop myself and I painted over the gorgeous wood!  Guest_room_001

So, with more guests arriving this weekend, I thought I should finally get this room set back up.  I had to buy a mattress, but everything else I put in it is from my stash of bargain redos.  It is a small, attic room, so not easy to fit pieces into.  This large, chest of drawers is one of my favorites, ever. It is from Sparks/White Cloud Flea Market, I bought it for $50 and repainted it.

I had it stored in the garage, thinking I would sell it, but when an open spot in my house became available, I was begging the family to help my haul it up the stairs!Guest_room_013

The hamper next to it, was one I found in the trash and painted an iris on.

Here is a close up of the painted chest. I am crazy about the curved drawer on the top!

Guest_room_008 Next to it, hangs my favorite antique print of all time.  I traded a small mural for this one, at a little hole in the wall antique shop in Topeka.

As much as I love these two pieces, I usually go for a lighter, brighter look and the dark colors and rich golds don’t really go with my downstairs.  So, I was thrilled to find a spot for them in my guest room.Guest_room_010

I tried to still keep the room light by using a white desk that I had made from a cast off (and free to me) drop leaf table.  See, the drop leaves have now become the back of the desk and the shelf, supported by some salvage posts. I made it for a Romantic Homes article I wrote last year and have had it out in the garden shed.  With the tall bed ($15 iron frame from an auction), the desk is a good height for a bedside table.  On the other side, I actually stacked two little tables and threw a silk curtain panel (from Good will for $2) over them.

The bedspread ($5) is from a garage sale, two years ago.  I loved it, but have never had a place to use it.  Sometimes, I just have to buy something whether there is a spot for it just yet, or not.  I usually end up with the perfect place to use it, or else find someone else who will love it too.

The throw is vintage velvet squares, not sturdy enough for daily use, but a good fit for a guest room.  It was only $11 at a great little place south of here, called 4 Corners.  There are always bargains there!!!  Guest_room_018

Here is the rest of the room. Like I said, very small. I think it is 12’x13′, and of course the slanted ceiling makes it seem smaller.  I faux finished the walls in creams, tans, golds with lots of iridescent glitter thrown in the paint so the walls are reflective and I hope they keep the room from feeling too closed in.

The lamp is another garage sale find, only $3, and pretty old. I had to rewire it to make it safe.

Vintage green velvet from the Sparks/White Cloud flea mkt is used on the hand painted chair.  I love to find chairs with wide backs like this, they just call out for roses to be painted on them!

Another Obsession, I mean Collection

Chandeliers

My friend, Beth, http://bethleintz.typepad.com/gathering_dust/ told me I had to check out a blog: http://carlenefederer.blogspot.com/, knowing I would love it.  Well, first thing I noticed was the Yorkie, and I am quite the Yorkie person. (did you see Country Living with the Yorkie on the cover lying on the pink and white bed? Don’t know which I like best, the room or the dog).  Then I saw the chandeliers she posted for the March crusade about collections Michelle Ward called for pictures of on her blog: http://michelleward.typepad.com/how_cool_is_that/.  I had posted a couple of my collections earlier, but this inspired me to show some chandeliers too.

Get ready, there are a bunch of them—Chandeliers_001

This teeny one is part of a pair I bought at Nell Hills and used to illuminate this hutch in my studio after redoing it from 1970’s Mediterranean to a style more cottageyChandeliers_005 .

In my kitchen nook, I have an older light I painted and added pearls and crystals to.Chandeliers_007

Well, in some rooms, you just need a ceiling fan.  I did what I could with it, painted, and distressed it, added a medallion.  Then threw away the Home Depot light that came on it and replaced it with a crystal light from a garage sale.Chandeliers_009

We remodeled our master bath and I searched everywhere for an affordable and romantic styled chandelier to fit the space, and had no luck in the time frame I had. If I had planned ahead, maybe I could have found a used one to fix up. But, it was winter, not garage sale season, so I had to order this one online from Spectrum, but it was only $99 and ready to go, no work involved!  That was a nice treat for me.Chandeliers_012

Above my kitchen sink, I have a petite chandelier painted creamy white and hungChandeliers_013  with a mix match of crystals, including a stained glass star my friend, Shanna made for me.

The 3rd in the kitchen is this iron one from another garage sale, that I painted white and tied tiny teapots to.

Chandeliers_018

The dining room has another one that I painted white and added crystals to.  I went with blue drops on thisChandeliers_020 .

My breezeway has no electricity, so I made a candelier with epoxied teacups on the arms of it.  I can dress it up with vines and crystals and ribbons for special occasions, but don’t on a regular basis since it sits in front of a window I usually have open in nice weather, and that blows it too much.Chandeliers_021 I hung it from a birdcage stand, because it would be too hard to light candles if it were up high.  Plus, who wants candles burning too close to the ceiling?

On to my art studio- 5 in there.  Here are the first two, they hang over my painting area. The one with pink crystals is straight from Lowes, as is. The other one, I bought from my brother-in-law when visiting him in Jacksonville.  He used to have a booth at the Avondale antique mall and when ever I went to visit, I’d have to sweet talk him into shipping  my packages home to me.  Chandeliers_022

On the other side of my studio, is one of my faves.  I fixed it up for a music room in a design show house in Topeka.  Its made from a trumpet and 6 french horns!  I had pretty lampshades on it, but I prefer the brighter light without the shades since it is in Chandeliers_024 a studio.

Also in the studio, is this light I found on a trip home to visit my family in Indiana. Somewhere along I70, at one of the hundreds of places I stopped (sometimes the 8 hour drive takes me 15) I found this beauty with its graceful lines.

Chandeliers_026

Last one (well not counting the ones in the garden shed, and the one I painted silver and hang up at Christmas, filled with silver ornaments)

When there isn’t enough ceiling space, bird cage stands are perfect chandelier holders.  This one is painted in metallic paints of a few colors, and then hung with stained glass drops from my friend, Shanna, and some different shaped colored crystals I have collected.
