Have people snapped?

Corona virus

10433018-48DA-4F6A-8142-35E6154DB878

A quiet, uneventful few weeks was what I had expected when we were told to stay in our homes to flatten the curve.
But instead, things have been more lively than ever.

It started with a sheriff  knocking on my door to ask if we were shooting in the woods. Nope, not us.

So he trotted out to our creek to find a family out there target practicing. In preparation for “the corona apocalypse”.

Then a few nights later, we heard a loud CRUNCH, and headed outside to find a car stuck backwards in our fence.

The guy by the car smelled beer-y.

Very beer-y.

And he was trying to get the wedged in car out and take off, so I hobbled over and squeezed in between the vehicle and smashed fence to take photos of the license plate in case he left.

383FA423-0A1C-4C76-8C5C-0AB2E7133E21

Well, the car was trapped pretty good, and I wished I had taken a photo of his face too, because he ran off on foot when he wasn’t able to free his trapped car.

9975616A-EBF0-4EC6-8E89-6678B60CC98F

Our property borders the city limit line, so we had an assortment of sherif cars and city police cars come by, with not just flashing lights, but search lights, as they drove through the neighborhoods trying to find the runaway.

I guess he didn’t want a DUI?   But is a hit and run violation any better?

While waiting to see if he was insured, my husband built a makeshift patch with materials on hand, so the dogs could still use the yard.

I don’t think they mind having a window.  With so many people out walking along the sidewalk, they can actually see who they are barking at.

Social distancing has been a dream come true for the dogs. Not only has it added to the traffic of dog walkers in front of our house, but we are home with them nonstop.

They love it.

And so far, we have been lucky that our problems have been non-medical.  I hope you are staying well also.  Take care and stay safe.

EDIT- More shooting!  A car drove around the corner in front of my house while I was walking Twinkle, shots were fired from it as it sped away.  I was very close but only heard, didn’t see what happened.  The light blue car passed me seconds after it happened.

Our policemen arrived quickly and I gave them my view of what happened, but it wasn’t that helpful.

What is happening here in my little corner of the world?  How are things in yours?

Simple bread making tips from the Bread Witch

Food and Drink

8AE43B1A-0CF6-4F85-8DC2-4F86ED4CCC06
My family calls me the Bread Witch because I whip up bread so easily.  Bread making can intimidate people and is considered a science where you need scales and meticulous care to produce a loaf.

Nope.  It isn’t that hard.

A944D191-834D-4641-B9AD-1E466C584825

I take a lot of short cuts, like using a bread maker for the mixing and kneading, and my measurements are by eye and experience, not very precise.

As long as you follow the basic principles and use the approximate components, it all comes out okay.

E493234B-9EE2-43A2-BAF1-8A7495616923

Not that mistakes don’t happen. I can set bread to rise, forget, walk away and hours later come back to popped balloons.

E2498155-2F85-458B-9110-26F8D7AACFF0

Or jostle the pan too much when moving it to the oven and create a sinking mass of dough.  I always try to peek in the oven a couple of minutes after loading it in, to see if there is wrinkling.  That means it wasn’t treated gently enough and will soon collapse.

Hint- if the corner of the dough looks like the inner thigh of a 62 year old woman who just had surgery on her knee and lost too much weight, in a not very pretty way, the bread is on its way to falling.  Too much info?  It is sad but true.

But all is not lost, just remove it, stretch it, ball it up, reshape it, and let it rise again.  It usually doesn’t take as long for a second raising, so check back. (Or again, walk away for hours and let it happen again, and it can still be salvaged.)

(Just in case you get careless, always start with a clean surface.  I wipe out my microwave before adding the pans to rise, because if the dough flops over the sides, I won't want to save it if there were stray crumbs it fell into)

This is how I make my yeast bread. With stores running out of yeast, I have also began a batch of sourdough starter, and will let you know how that goes.

8A116C8E-C705-4FD8-97C5-750FEA810027

First, some oil.  I like avocado or olive.  I do not measure, but it is anywhere from 1-3 tablespoons.  Or I can use butter.  Or no fat at all.  Seriously, choices can be made as you go.  Think about the flavor profile.

I use pink Himalayan sea salt.  Or garlic and rosemary salt. Or table salt. About 1-1/2T, a bit more if I want it extra garlicky and I am using flavored salt.

0B971F35-F933-41E9-AD6C-C4412DBE4164

Next, liquid.  I prefer nut milk, but water is fine.  Or regular milk. You can even sub a 1/2 cup of coffee for some of the 2 cups of liquid, or throw an egg in as part of the liquid. Just use two cups total.

See, choices!  Use what you have, or what sounds good.

It is nice to use bread flour, I sometimes do that half and half with regular flour.  Or use all of either kind.  One thing I do not do, is go full on with a specialty flour like whole wheat, sprouted spelt, or almond.  If I want to use one of those, I will add only a third or so of them, because they all tend to make a more dense bread and I prefer mine lighter.

The cup I use to add flour isn’t exactly true as a measuring cup  it is more like 1-1/4 C.  I use three and a half of those, so let me do some math…about 4-1/3C?  Honestly, some of my scoops are heavier or lighter than others, so, again, I am not exact.
Add 2 or 2-1/2T of fast rise yeast.

I often throw in a handful of chia seeds, ground flax, sunflower seeds, or mashed potato flakes.
Or honey, but not a handful, that would be sticky.  More like a spoonful or two.

My point is, that bread is not scary. Make it with what you have.

AD0EA446-5935-4D4E-A4FF-1A9580681CFF

I mix and knead in the bread maker, On the dough setting, but don’t leave it in the full amount of time.  Unless I forget… still, it isn’t ruined if it grows and pops.  It just needs to have the machine turned on for another minute or so to stir it up again before putting it into the pans.

26DC0A2D-D940-4138-BC72-01936ED404A2

I prefer mine baked in the oven, not the machine.  So I turn it into oiled pans.  Two small or one bigger.

FB60E2E9-20F5-44BC-93ED-F477730059D5

To proof it (let it rise), I heat a cup of water in the microwave, and turn on the light.  That creates a non drafty, warm environment for the bread to grow.

Leave it about a half hour.

F107810E-7571-4212-AEE0-9FBE0E1DB22F

Check and see if it is tall enough.  Leave it longer if needed. Then bake at 350 for about a half hour.

Remove the loaves from the hot pans right away so the bottom doesn’t get soggy, let the bread cool on a wire rack (I use one I have taken out of the oven)

I was pretty proud of myself for getting a few bags of flour so I’d be able to drop bread off on porches for family members. But I didn’t realize I was low on yeast, so am going to experiment with sourdough during this time of making do.

I haven’t done that before, and it might be a learning curve. But bread isn’t rocket science, it just takes trial and error. And a house that smells like hot, fresh bread is worth the effort.

Fresh bread during lockdown

Corona virus, cottage, Food and Drink

When I went to the grocery to stock up before we were told to stay in and avoid crowds, I was careful to buy mostly ingredients I would need for meals, not snacks or pre made things.

Since I regularly bake bread, I bought two bags of bread flour, one of regular.  I figured I might be dropping off bread to the porches of family members too.

What did I not get?
YEAST

And apparently, I am not the only one that thought she’d be doing a bit of baking.  There was no yeast to be found at that point.   I have enough for my household, just not enough for the whole family.

4D9C9492-9015-4C3B-8E98-D0666897EC4C

Then, I saw a suggestion online to make sourdough starter.  I found a simple recipe and am trying it out.  This one is 3/4 cup plus 2T flour and a 1/2 cup water, every day for five days.  You stir it together, keep it lightly covered at room temperature.  I went with a clean kitchen towel and rubber band as a lid.

I have never made this before, but I am enjoying the science experiment aspect of it, and miss having my little homeschooler here this week to share it with. (She is with her mom)

Also, it is kind of cool that it is living. And needs to be fed.  I have named it Sara Jo.

F69771F7-86A4-4F1C-BCF0-549FA6E117C8

The guy we bought our layers from also raises “Meatbirds” as he calls them, and sent a frozen meatbird home with us.  I am hoping to make sourdough biscuits with roasted meatbird to try out the starter in a couple days.  Then, will move on to loaves of bread to share.

49345F11-B483-4BD4-9F9B-EE6E8838E698

When I bake, I use a bread maker to mix and knead it.  Then, I oil pans, place the dough in, oil the top of the dough and set the pans into my microwave to use as a warming box to proof in.

I have found that boiling a cup of water in the microwave first, and leaving the cup next to the dough promotes a good rise.  Also, I think that you get a crustier crust and a more attractive loaf if you bake it in the oven instead of leaving it in the bread maker to cook.

I’ll let you know how the sourdough turns out.

And if you are in the area, are needing chickens to raise or meatbirds to eat, I can give you our guy’s name.   He has some friendly little hens. We like our few.

Cooped Up in a Positive Way

Our coop has been empty for over a while now.  Sadly, each season there was always attrition in the number of birds.  So every spring we would buy more.

Due to my husband’s previous travel schedule for work, then his amped up travel plans for retirement, we decided to not replace the flock a couple of years ago.

4E3CA1CF-8B87-42CD-9D09-C10D1955C0E4

As you all know, everyone’s travel plans are different now.
It looks like we will be home a while….

So we took a trip out to the country and loaded up a dozen hens.

A7D29DD5-850F-43F6-BE36-D721351A9BA2

We debated getting more than 12, since all of the raccoons, hawks, and other critters on our land will be every bit as glad to see the hen house fill up as we were.

But, while having a few chickens to keep us entertained and provided with eggs while social distancing, that same confinement means less trips to the feed store.

FF36B380-50EE-4DBB-B742-AD614EE61D9D

And 12 can produce a lot of eggs to keep us, our family and friends well supplied.

We already got 4 the first day!

After frying them up, I wondered why on earth we went without chickens for so long.
You really can taste the difference.

A Later in Life Career Change

Corona virus, family, Sugarwings

Before spring break, in what seems like a lifetime ago, Sugarwings was in the school play.

And we picked up one of her friends for our family outing to the Shriner’s Circus.

Now, we are adjusting to social distancing, and no school in Kansas, even possibly past August.

Mr. Pop, my husband, is the new Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and PE teacher.

For now, we have asked Bill Nye the Science Guy to telecommute lessons in his area of expertise, because we can’t handle that one.

I got lucky and was hired to teach Art.  Our first lesson was about the color wheel, and complementary colors, displayed in Sculpy.

I am called, Mrs. Gram and will also be the lunch lady.  Sugarwings made the schedule and has been a model student.  I can already see her making the honor roll if she keeps it up.

One day down..

Good luck to all of you out there who have surprisingly become teachers, too.  If you have any tips, I’m listening.

The minor knee surgery I had went well, no complications, but was harder for me to handle than I had expected.  I spent the first part of the week elevating, icing, and dozing.

5B84616F-E60B-4CA9-AED8-15816F4019C3

As the pain ebbed, I got busy on disassembling an ancient, patchwork lace table cloth for use in the Bluebird’s Song workshop.  As I felt better, I moved on to embroidery for a shirt that was going to be used in the Beauty in Blue workshop.

While snipping and stitching, Netflix and my iPad were my constant companions.

As the week went by, and I felt like I might have hit the end of Netflix offerings, the information I was reading on my iPad was becoming more and more disturbing so I deserted Netflix for news channels.

FAF8F5B8-B9A9-4523-9D5D-98BB186D9852

My lazy, half awake days had made me feel distanced from what was happening with the Corona virus, but that dream-like state didn’t last.
I soon realized that this possible nightmare was for real.

CF873E6A-9A60-4542-A387-6C4C4476A363

Cancellations started pouring in. Personal ones that at first were sad for me, then larger, national things that put my own smaller issues into perspective.

I hope you and your loved ones are safely taking precautions and will find ways to make you social distancing enjoyable.

My week of solitude has eased me into the habit of quiet, alone time.

320663E6-1EF4-48FD-840D-06FC26572229

This last week of recuperating and not leaving my house didn’t seem too lonely.  Talking on the phone, and in emails to loved ones helped a lot. So did keeping busy, with these small projects.

I find that being productive, even in little ways helps me not fret as much.  And being creative? As I tell the grand fairies, only boring people get bored.  There is always something to do, make, plan, or dream about.

So, let’s cross our fingers that soon, we will all be done with quarantines, people and the economy are recovering, and we have all used this period to have some reflective time to reconnect with ourselves, make something, day dream, or have long talks on the phone with people we care for.

Stay Safe!

A Stop Along The Way

On our long, long drive to Florida, we made a side trip to Helen, GA. We had family to visit, and were excited to see them, not even knowing what a gorgeous, little tourist town they lived in.

14C2CD03-ED0A-45CF-90F6-22E8CB1D4605

We had unpleasant weather, not the best to be pulling a camper along twisty, mountain curves.  But the scenery was still spectacular, if spooky.

Being in a truck with three freshly bathed dogs on a long trip, started out as an adventure.

The rain soon turned it into a wet, muddy mess.

Luckily, our family was made up of understanding, dog people. It all worked out.My SIL, Sharon keeps a mop handy for their big dogs too.

She and I got out to explore the town a shop a little.

The town is on a river in the mountains, and I hope to return in nicer weather for some hiking and floating.

On this visit, we stuck to indoor activities, and I found these fantastic, vintage beaded pieces at the local antique mall.

Most of the trip was spent catching up and chatting in their new, hillside cottage.  I was touched to see a plethora of things I’d made over the years.
Like this kitchen island.

I used to paint a lot of trays too.

So many trays, boards, signs, cabinets, whatever had a blank space, got all flowered up.

Well, not always flowers. This cabinet was damaged so I added a mouse hole.

Twinkle Twinkle

bird song art event, dogs, yorkies

E7E2EFE6-40AF-4E06-B563-BF0DA7FF7776Twinkle came along on the Great Camping Adventure, instead of staying home with Albie and Dorothy for Ryan to watch, as she usually would have.  Our 13 year old girl is blind now, and we worried she’d have trouble with the doggie door in the snow while Ry was at work.  Or get lost in a corner of the fence.  Or not find her water dish.

Funny, she seems to be the happiest that she has ever been, not even bothered by knowing she can’t see.  Could it be that she finally let go of her hopeless cause of remaining Alpha after we brought Honey into our home?

At first, she struggled with losing her sight and was timid in her steps.  Maybe the blurry shapes she saw confused or scared her?

But once her vision was completely gone, all fear was gone.

So much so, that she gleefully walks into danger.  We call it, Magooing.  Like Mr. Magoo.

Tinks can still find cozy spots to curl up.

9C73258F-A7CA-4FCB-BA9F-ADD820AC17C1

This is a scene we never expected to see.  These dogs were mortal enemies.  We worked with Honey’s resource guarding and life became calmer and safer, but there was no love lost between them for years. They shared a home, not a pack.

Once Twinkle could no longer see, she began feeling around for a warm soft spot to nap, and didn’t even notice if it was on top of her greatest foe.

At first, Honey would bristle at the intrusion of her space.  But then, she seemed to realize that the little Yorkie was harmless, and actually kind of cuddly.

4E76F2AD-3917-494D-9A5A-1AC2E1C78F66

Which is lucky for us, could you imagine sharing such teensy living quarters for two weeks with dogs that couldn’t stand being near each other?

Uhm, you are probably looking at this with horror in your eyes wondering how anyone could spend any time at all in such a small space.

It certainly was NOT “glamping.”  And many days the weather wasn’t Florida’s finest, so we were all piled up on each other.

But it was somewhat okay.. should I say fun?  Maybe not fun, maybe “enjoyable.”  Or probably, “not bad.”

Did I curse at the dogs every time they tripped me? Oh yes.

Then, I got home to our 5,000 sq ft home and was still cursing as I tripped over them in the kitchen.  No matter how much space we have, there they are under my feet.

120C593F-BD1C-41C1-A768-7F6267620A80

Hopefully I won’t be tripping over them too much, I am having some minor knee surgery this week.

If you would like to sign up to come to Bluebird’s Song I might not be checking emails for a couple of days.  But I will answer them in the order they came in when I am once again up and about.

And I hope you do sign up!  It will be an intimate group, not as large as my typical gatherings.  But there are some spots left.

Please check the previous post for details.

Join us in Kansas, somewhere over the rainbow, where happy little bluebirds fly, and beautiful dreams come true, for classes with Lesa Dailey and myself.  Our time will include 2 lunches, lots of treats, and a happy hour party.

This class is limited in size to the amount of  vintage albums I have to craft into art journals.  No two books are alike, so the selecting of covers will be chosen by guests in the order of class sign ups.

IMG_8957

We will be using The Good Stuff, lots of lovely ephemera to create a personalized, one of a kind book.

IMG_8961 IMG_8963

Lesa will be leading us in making one of her delightful birds.   Here are photos of birds I have gotten from her, not the pictures of what she will be teaching.  I will let you know as soon as she gets a sample to me.

I do not tell Lesa what to make, she is a designing genius and I leave it up to her!

IMG_8980

This will be my project for Sunday.  Although I have to warn you, all will differ, as I am using old books to build the kits.

I will provide a very, very vintage album, disassembled, painted, waxed, and buffed, ready for you to craft into a book. I have many old albums, in different styles, and choice of the books will be in order of sign ups.

Also, if you would rather have a book cover as is, no paint, please request that ahead of time, so I can leave some plain.

IMG_8981

Each kit will be of equal value and style, but they will vary according to the book itself.

IMG_8406

Lesa's class will be most of the day Saturday, with a break for lunch.

Then in the later part of the afternoon, we will have some fairy fun, with happy hour crafting.  There will be a special Bluebird Sangria, and blue fairies with some tasty snacks.

If you prefer to make a fairy from a picture of someone you love or of yourself, I can edit a photo for you. Or you can choose from a collage sheet that I will provide.  Your fairy can hang, or be used in your book.

IMG_8973 IMG_8974

Your art journal kit will include pre-folded and prepped pages, ready to tie in, and vintage mats to use for collage or to frame a picture. I'm doing the boring part ahead for you, so you will have all the pieces ready to assemble, and have time left over to decorate interior pages.

You will get:

  • Prepped covers from a vintage album
  • Prepped pages and ribbons cut to tie them in
  • Lovely laces to trim and embellish the cover
  • Buttons, rhinestones, and velvet ribbon
  • A soft, old millinery bloom
  • A painted key
  • Seam binding, netting, and other trims
  • An ephemera pack
  • Vintage wallpaper
  • An old photo
  • Bird images

IMG_8958

I am cutting apart a treasured, hand pieced tablecloth of netting and old lace, everyone will get a section of this to use.

IMG_8959

As well as gorgeous bridal lace with sparkling sequins and beads.

IMG_8977

Cost will be $350 and can be split into two payments completed by May 1.

I will keep track of the order in which you respond, and that will determine who gets which album to work with.

Please email at

Karlanathan@sbcglobal.net

to ask for a paypal invoice or an address to mail a check.

Refund policy- Kits will be sent to you at a cost of $65 for Lesa's, $80 for the book, and $25 for the fairy plus postage, and the rest refunded in full.  I know that many are worried about upcoming travel restrictions and wanted to make sure you were covered if that occurs. If you can't come to the class, you will at least have a project mailed to you to work on at home.

Our gathering is held during KCMO’s First Friday weekends, so you might want to treat yourself to shopping at the fabulous Old West Bottoms Antique District on Friday while in the area.

PS- I will be having surgery on Friday March 6, so please understand if I don't get back to you right away.  Emails will be answered in the order they come in for sign ups. Thank you!!

IMG_8967

Here are some of the albums I have that are in the original condition.

IMG_8968

There are various colors and styles, all quite lovely.  Some are velvet, some celluloid, some leather.

When I paint the red velvet ones, they turn a pretty color of pink.

IMG_8960

This is Lesa's project from A Snowbird's Song last November.

IMG_8969

I will leave you with some close ups of the album covers.

IMG_8966

Here is one that I turned into an updated photo album that was left as is.

IMG_8964

And this one was painted.

IMG_8971

All are slightly damaged and tattered due to age. I look at that as an opportunity to use more lace on them!
