A loose interpretation and some Grace

In my previous post, I had mentioned that one section of my booth had a Yellowstone inspiration.

62C3B335-F19A-4E69-8F37-73C5C51CEFBB

That is a pretty loose reference.  I guess what I was going for was my typical, romantic neutrals with a dash of western rustic thrown in. (Really, just boots and Stetson hats, but hey, I can spin all sorts of tales in my head about the stories behind the look)

E98CCFDD-5592-4723-9AC3-513A1DFA4A4F

There is some of the more neutral Easter decor on that side too.

F54090EC-4409-40D0-9BC4-2C86965C19C2

And throughout the whole booth, I have scattered nests.

04BC10EB-181D-4BED-98F4-382D2BEDA7A8

I seriously love the look of an all neutral design, but I cannot pull it off for my whole booth.  Because I also adore cottage roses and pretty colors too.  So I try to designate sections for each theme or color.

5DB48FD4-E50D-4A00-B361-875A1F08A32D

Hmm, my whole Yellowstone theme might just be in my head, because if you watch the show, you see very little white.

As I said before, though- inspiration and copying are very different.  You want to keep that line separating the two.  I doubt if there is anything truly original left to do in this world, but the trick is to add as much of your own self to any idea as you can, right?

F6EDA892-FD12-4F44-9B6B-3D3EBBA9BCDC

As I usually do, I’ve managed to cram a lot into my small area.  And then mentally slap myself when I start to day dream about expanding into even more booth space… or getting another spot somewhere else….

If I was smart, I’d just try to beef up my online shop.  Honestly, editing photos and writing descriptions is not half as fun as arranging things in person or precariously trying to hang decor from the ceiling.

There is a pile of goods accumulating for my Boutique, though. And I love the nice people I meet online who shop there.  Wrapping up the packages to make them pretty is my favorite part of selling through the website, I should concentrate on letting that part be the carrot on the stick to motivate me to get more done.

Then again, I am trying to give myself some grace and realize that I just can’t do it all.
We could all use some of that Grace in our lives, where we try to appreciate what we can do and not feel bad about being unable to do more.

Easter isn’t until April, but I have been spending a good chunk of February getting ready for bunny-ing up my booth for the next First Friday at Good Juju.

And since we are also in the vicinity of St Paddy’s, I’ve added a section of green and good luck snuggled between the bunnies and eggs.

C6611194-ABBF-49D3-8316-906F7ACB08AB

This wall is covered in spring daisies on a soft green background.  It is vintage wall paper, and my plan is to change it up seasonally.  I’ll roll up the used piece from the previous month and have it for sell when I do the change over.

I offer packets of ironed, cut wallpaper for crafting in my online Boutique but I’ve never sold the stuff this way.  It will be good for bigger projects, and ends up being about 6-7’.

B3AECD68-02A7-42C4-86A3-A68C010377E7

Although, when I stapled this piece up, it was chosen for the pretty green tones, then it dawned on me that around here, daisies were more of a summer flower, not early spring.  Dur.
7E7880F6-7CBB-4750-91EA-DBF4FEBC5B95
I kinda doubt anyone else will think it through that far.  Ha, can you picture someone critiquing my use of Daisies in March?

“Why, I’ve never seen such a disrespectful display of unseasonal flowers in my life! No way am  I shopping in that uninformed booth!”

63D2E228-5CE8-441D-BDCA-BF67F84046D9

Another nitpick?  I’m not totally satisfied with the hairstyle on my shamrock doll.  She has a 1960’s Barbie bubble cut from the front. From behind, it’s a nice updo.  This girl should dump her hairdresser (me).  I might bring scissors and snip in some bangs before she meets our guests.

25534E4E-1B88-475A-97C4-97DBC4E4AA12

While one whole corner is set to celebrate the luck of the Irish on their special day, most of my decor consists of green stuff and green Easter eggs.  I have a couple vintage clover brooches, the doll, and two mushrooms made from the same tattered, old material as the doll dress.

This one has a tiny leprechaun grabbing some shade underneath.

AC2BE789-1554-4199-9DF1-C52EC51DA50B

There are also silver pendants with an Irish theme.  I have Celtic knots, green stones, moons, and dragons.  Kinda Irishy.  I not a beer drinker, so have never considered drinking green beer, and really am not at all into the typical St Patrick’s Day type of celebrating.  But I like to remember that I am part Irish and pretend it is my holiday too, like many of us do.

(Also part English and German according to 23 and Me DNA testing. Sounds like there could’ve been some disagreements and a bit of bombing between my ancestors, huh?)

053A2F0F-1E9A-40AA-B16E-4BF95B6341CB

There will be more Easter to show you from the other side.

And then the last wall is all neutrals, inspired by Yellowstone- which I think starts up again soon.  I do enjoy that show, but I seriously LOVE  the two prequels.  OMG, the romance!  The scenery!  How Gorgeous.  Well, I’ll show that wall later, I have a feeling no one will interpret as Yellowstone, but hey, inspiration isn’t exact because then it’s called copying, right?

A learning curve or a squiggle?

antiques/junking, Good JuJu

D1EBB480-0164-4081-A572-6AD05445913D
For a place that is only open two days a month, I sure spend a lot of time working on Good Juju stuff.  It is all things I like to do, make pretties, buy junk, fix up old things, repurpose, and then decorate with it all.
But- I really, really, really put too much time into it.

Like setting up this display at home as a practice look before even getting the crap to the venue.

187D501A-7DF8-423E-90B6-DD4E9A1C6A18

Some of the problem is that I’ve not even been doing this a year yet and my booth space changed four times during those few months.  I don’t exactly have a firm feel of what I need to fill up my spaces.  Every time I take a load in, I think I’m done, then I realize I could fit another carload into the area, so I bring in more.

7F61B62C-1363-4C10-8698-BFF713642C3A

When I began, I had zero inventory.  It was right as we were emerging from Covid seclusions, and I, like many other people, did major closet clearing during lock down.  I gave truckloads of things from my storage areas, garages, cabinets and just things I was tired of looking at, all to Goodwill.

And I had a pretty serious concussion that affected me more than I realized at the time.  Looking back, those couple of months after my dog’s head slammed into my head, are all fuzzy and seem like I was peering through a dark tunnel.

B52F08AF-1810-4700-A2BE-15FEA4DF8614

Also, I am still trying to figure out what will sell.  When I craft, I usually go all out and make a ton of that item in many variations.  And sometimes, I’ll only sell a couple.  Or I will sell most of them, make more for the next sale, and everyone who wanted one already got it earlier.  Or I’ll sell out of something online by showing photos ahead of time, and not have any for my booth.

I guess my issue is that I love everything about the creative side, but struggle with the marketing end of it all.  It’s a learning curve and I might think in a squiggles shape with curves all over the place instead of a gentle arc.

0413F88C-DB7B-45B3-8D51-62BB294D1C6C

Then there are the things that I make or display that are just because I want to, not because people will be buying them  After hanging big snowflakes from the rafters above the entry to our booth for winter, I decided I want to do a different theme each season.

This month, it is birdcages.  But once I got these minis up there, I didn’t think they make enough of a statement.  I had plans to hang big cages and white frames too, but needing to use a ladder the size of a skyscraper (that weighs as much as a building too) had me adjusting my plans.

9E8926D3-593F-4B35-A8BC-9A383EA149E8

Still, I do enjoy my obsessions, I mean themes.  Like all of the handmade nests I spent an entire day on.

And as far as marketing goes, I might never figure out what is the best way to go. I am hoping that as I build inventory up, and get used to just how much I can squeeze into my booth, I can become more efficient in my set ups.

8E9D3616-31B3-45F1-851F-101BC7B06D64
And I’ll keeping on completely immersing myself into my projects, because it’s just my nature.  Sure, I could get nests wholesale and pop eggs from the hobby store into them.  But I loved spending a day making a few dozen hand crafted nests and repainting those purchased eggs just the right color of blue, so they’d all look pretty together.

We survived The City Museum and can’t wait to risk our lives there again

My poor Rich has spent the last 3 1/2 months working in Ohio at a consulting job, with minimal visits home.  He only has a couple weeks left and will finally be back with us soon.

We have always celebrated Valentine’s Day as a family holiday, with special memories for us and our boys. This year with Ryan gone and Adam so far away, and Rich working in Ohio, we sadly thought it might just go by without our typical festivities.

A8497753-0527-4F67-BB84-94E91CFF160F

Rich had the weekend off, but not long enough to get home so Sugarwings and I met him in St Louis and we had an outing at the City Museum as a slightly early Valentine date, then went to The Hill (the historic Italian district) for a fancy night out.

We were not all together as a big group, and it wasn’t exactly on the 14th, but it helped, and was quite special.

E9A59FAF-0310-460C-B764-E4F8D8037097

The City Museum is crazy.

53E7BB50-B08B-47DF-A0F9-F2B77579DFC6

Completely, totally, beyond crazy.

9FE8E304-7B94-4CF0-AAE2-52E06F2EABF7

See that iron slinky? It’s made for humans to climb through. For floor after floor.

A71A9E8B-5D18-4414-A2C3-312F95B5E8F2

And speaking of floors, there are pits every where.  Most aren’t lit up, they are just black holes meant for kids to disappear into.  Some come out around the corner, others lead to the basement.  And there are dozens of them.  The gift shop sells miner’s helmets for kids to wear to explore the tunnels.

7C3358D4-46EE-4A3F-A193-B8A55E174FAC

Other crevices lead to slides, stairs, or to bubbles inside of an aquarium.  You just don’t know where you will end up if you slip into one of these black holes.

5D22FB37-63D1-4A03-9C1F-32F027170244

It has to be one of the most imaginative, creative places a kid could have to play in, it is well done and just beautiful too.  But I can’t believe it is safe.
FB712F74-B48A-4ED5-9AAB-32C44F260C74I was so glad I had never been there when the grand fairies were tiny.    My mind would've exploded trying to keep my eyes on them.

0874E9C4-6AB4-4074-BCDE-095F7ECEFF5D

It was one of those rare times in life when you thank god you have a teenager.

9DE94EDE-A6A3-4346-BBEB-4D0AF2B8DF33It was funny to me that this area was gated off.  What, kids are not allowed to play in the giant box fan? Why not, it seems safer than some of the other areas.

57E9360E-D609-4E57-B235-B778D3CCEDFF

We didn’t even see a fraction of it, there are billions of nooks and crannies, a rusty, ten story slide with a rickety spiral staircase, and a whole sharp, pointy, rusty, sky high climbing grid outside as tall as the big building.

6481E62B-802D-415E-9066-E8696BBD67EE

Everywhere you looked, there was something clever, funny, intriguing, or deadly.

FCC20EAB-71BD-4F0C-9823-7E33FDF5FE0C

It goes on for floor after floor with interactive spaces, play areas, and death traps.  (Sooooo many tiny holes for kids to skitter away into)  AND SO DANG COOL!

A6E45B4F-35CE-4434-8701-E5614EFBF9F8

And an aquarium.  And it’s a museum. Not just a twisted playground aimed to tease all phobias.

B2AFEEA8-91EC-47DC-B929-4BDFC63781E1
There were actual museum cases with artifacts surrounding one playground.

7D3BDE46-4602-4866-911F-1BCD1A8748A3

And genuine architectural elements everywhere.  Not to mention murals and mosaics galore.  And a bug/animal skeleton room with specimens behind glass.  We spent a long time in the craft room making art too.

393DDB7A-6189-4352-A3C9-4C8EBB429229

And in the art museum looking at displays.

DB33BC41-163C-4158-8A6A-D322A10623E0

There were tons of details about the old building it is in.

F9AB41C2-2412-4AA5-9E9D-B8D16605EA28

And odd details like walls made out of baking tins.

81300BF2-19DD-49C0-AB80-6697E6C5C1BC

If I lived any closer, I’d have a season pass. There is no way to see it all in one day.

Well, as I mentioned with my last post, and as you might have noticed if you have ever read my blog over the last 16 years- I tend to get obsessions.

I have been making these fabric, no sew fungi since Guncle Randy and I came up with the simple design last summer.

And I love making them so much, I just don’t burn out.

More fairies? I cannot help myself.

fairies

Recently, I found a few more old dolls to redo.  They were not exactly the best, so I completely repainted their faces.

03F6C7E8-0F2B-41F6-8700-52F6AF89A615

They all got new hair too.  And clothes pieced together from vintage bits and pieces.

E119B283-5073-4489-B64F-A29B99C3D163

One became a St Paddy’s Gal.   She wears a vintage shamrock dress and her crown holds a green top hat snapped off of an antique stir stick.  Her hair is a pale green.

F6E0CD43-3381-4077-807D-87173B171145

And her bodice is a vintage, tatted butterfly.

998C02C0-2677-43AD-AE2C-2A0990D0F243

One of her arms was upside down.  I thought about cutting it off and trying to reattach it, but decided to camouflage it with a big bouquet instead.

Making these dolls is an indulgence for me, they really are not something most people have in mind when shopping at Good Juju.  If I were smart, I’d be working on something that fits in at the venue better.  Or stockpiling these for Christmas, when people are excited about frilly angels.

I am trying to adjust my likes to what my customers like.  But I sure do loooove fairies!

Distractions

flowers, paintings

EF150A3C-28BB-4D3E-87FC-2ED12D338287

While putting away my endless forest of Christmas trees, I decided to clear space in an upstairs closet to stash a tree that just did not want to go into the under stairs storage. I came across some old paintings.  This drawing was done about fifty years ago from a family photo I found at my mom’s.  But I have no idea who the people are and the piece was in the back of the closet for decades.  So I’m taking it into Good Juju to try to sell.

It can honestly be categorized as vintage!

E3CE127B-6F88-4FAB-8FEF-E3189EC201AA

There was an ugly painting lurking in the closet too.  It was flowers with a hummingbird and butterflies. I looked at it and thought, decent frame, pretty colors, just needs work.  So I thought I’d “touch it up”.  Haha, so much for that!  A few hours later, it was entirely covered with a landscape.

197F5D6D-E634-413F-8A16-102745790239

There is not an inch of the original painting left.  It did not get a makeover or touch up, it got a cover up.  It’s still not done, the flowers in the foreground are just roughed in.

But I had a fun day – much more fun than cleaning out closets.  The distraction of painting means that there is still a half cleared storage area that needs attention.  Maybe next January when I need to find a space to cram a tree into.
