A Halloween ghost toast

Uncategorized

Happy Halloween!
Sugarwings and I were not going to be together in the 31st, so we celebrated the holiday early with a mocktail toast.

SavingPNG
The recipe is kinda like one of Sissy’s friends was serving last week, but with a few embellishments.  Sugarwings and I like our edible glitter that swirls around in the liquid.

First, we generously smeared caramel sauce on the interior of the ruby flash stemware (a perfect glass for this beverage, its elegant color was a striking contrast to the ghoulish green soda).

Then added crushed ice and this BeetleJuice spiced apple soda.  It got a pinch of glitter, was topped with whipped cream, then Halloween sprinkles – oh and a couple eyeballs.

SavingPNG

It made for a tasty, ghost toast to honor the  spooky day.

Now that the kiddo is back at Mom’s, I have de-Halloweened my house already (it’s been ghoulish since August, I was done).  Normally, I’d be ready to deck the halls November 1st but I’ve had to cool my heels on that project. We are ripping up a bathroom floor to get to the bottom of a foundation issue.

Bad news, major expense and mess plus delayed hall decking.

Good news, my boy is here to work on it! And I get a renovated bathroom!

What a great, but awful week

family

SavingPNGHow can the world’s worst vacation turn into a special and fun time? I spent it with My People.  When I have them around me, all is good.

Even when it’s bad.

SavingPNGThe plan was to take our Sister Trip to Florida, and bring the “kids”.  We found an ideally located home on Bobbie’s favorite beach, right next to the condos we adore staying at, but large and luxurious enough to hold a dozen of us. It even had three bathrooms! And walked out directly onto the sand with a view from the balcony that matched our beloved spot from previous Sister Trips.

SavingPNG

But then you might’ve heard- there was a hurricane that blew from the gulf all the way up to my son’s home in North Carolina.  I was an emotional wreck, and couldn’t even think about what to do about the Siesta Key trip.  (My family members in the Asheville area are all doing okay, thank goodness)

There is an iffy line you need to figure out if you’ve got an upcoming vacation when a disaster strikes.  It is heart wrenching to imagine what they are facing.

Of course you want to be respectful and considerate of what people living there are going through.  Since my kids were in the center of the behemoth of a storm themselves, I could understand how ravaged lives are at a time like that.  But you also have to consider when, how and what to cancel, right?

SavingPNG

Plus, it’s a tourist area, and supporting the locals with travel dollars is vital, if possible.  We soon found out it wasn’t, so tried planning elsewhere, with our numbers dwindling from an original dozen to maybe 8 or so, and without a firm plan on where to go. Then heard another possible hurricane was coming.

Not to sound uncaring about the people in danger of the storm, but monkey wrenches were being flung hither and yon to hinder our trip.

Our on again, off again itinerary was starting to angst me up, and I dropped out too.  Then others cancelled and I figured I’d drive to Indy and spend my week there.  We planned mini trip to a French Lick resort and some other activities and I was looking forward to it.

SavingPNG

But oops- another monkey wrench, this time in the form of pneumonia for Sissy!  But she was being treated, the party was still on, we were going to make it a vacation no matter what. Till she had some scary complications that shook me to my core. She is doing well now! But at the time, I was freaking out, it was the exact same time last year that similar problems were developing with Bobbie.  The dejavu burbled up in me like a volcano with burning hot fear.

I had to tell myself this was different, there is no underlying cancer like there was with Bobbie Sue, Sissy would do well- and she did do well.  But tell that to my nervous system and stress responses.

SavingPNG

Sissy was recovering so nicely we wanted to go out for a fancy, staycation dinner to celebrate.  And the evening was so meant to be, we kept seeing signs throughout the meal.  My balsamic vinegar formed a heart in the olive oil, which might seem silly to take note of, but was meaningful to us.

SavingPNG
Then a guy walked by wearing a tee shirt from Bobbie’s favorite Florida restaurant!  I went and talked to him, got a photo of his shirt then retuned to my seat to discover a heart in the print hanging by our table.

SavingPNG
As I sat down, I must’ve bumped my watch, because a memo popped up reminding me that the calendar noted we should be in Siesta Key.

SavingPNG
Of course, I was in tears, plus we were laughing over all the coincidences.  Now, I do NOT need signs to miss or be reminded of my sister.  But spotting these little hearts and tidbits feel like messages that she will always be with me.

That day, a tree had been marked with a memorial sign for Bobbie, so after an emotional meal, we went to the park to visit it. It was a windy night, and the sign was blowing around on its branch like it was waving at us.

SavingPNG

My week in Pendleton was filled with extreme emotions, but also lots of togetherness.  We did not get to walk together on the shore, but my nieces and I spent lots of time on the trails of local parks.  We no longer had Bobbie with us, but she was part of our days.
SavingPNG
We didn’t have a view of the ocean, but we had the sun shining through the turning leaves.

SavingPNG

And we had each other to laugh, cry, play, and worry with.  Is it wrong that I feel like I had one of my favorite vacations?

It’s one I will treasure.

Everything was golden

dogs

SavingPNG

With Rich working out of town so much, we have missed our dog park walks.  Last week, we had an opportunity to hit the trails and get some steps in with the doggies.

SavingPNG

Our good intentions of getting exercise soon turned into relaxing by the water fall and soaking up the golden sunshine of a perfect autumn morning.

SavingPNG

My lack of motivation didn’t stop the dogs.  At the sight of the water, zoomies hit and they took off running with pure joy.

SavingPNG
Well, most of them, that is.  Dorothy Rosebud hung with me on the cliff.

SavingPNG

(uhm, I know that if you are a hiker in a genuine mountain zone, you wouldn’t consider this a “cliff”.  But hey, I’m a Kansan, let me have my happiness where I can find it!  This is my Kansas version of a waterfall beneath a cliff)
SavingPNG
Oh, and whatever you do, please don’t tell the girls and spoil it for them.

SavingPNG

This quiet, little space at the dog park, down by the Kaw River is their idea of being free in the wilderness.  And our corner of paradise.

Time with friends

SEVENTY FOUR magic wand/ plant stakes done and ready to market for the holidays!

Beth came over for a craft day, she was wanting to learn how to make Swifty bracelets, so I gave her some tips.  I had an order to fill of my own bracelets for a friend, so worked on those a while before starting on the plant stakes.  I stayed on task late into the day.  Actually into the evening.  I didn’t leave my post til after 9pm and this magical pile was all done.

SavingPNG

But I’m afraid that’s all I could manage for the day.  The final part, price tagging, was done at my mosaic group.  My pal, Shan, had just finished this beauty, and there I sat like a lump, making price tags.  This group is full of talented people and I love the look of the mosaics, but I typically find myself doing busywork like tags, or covering dozens of mushroom caps in velvet.

Someday, I’ll make another shiny glass piece.

SavingPNG

It was a week full of friends, how lucky!  I had craft day with Beth, mosaic day with the group, plus had a gathering at the cottage to write postcards to send to swing states reminding voters to skeedaddle to the poles on November 5th.

My political opinions are strong, but my main one is, get out there and vote, no matter what your opinions are!

Looking good for the season

Our doodles were gifted some fall scarves to wear and surprisingly have kept them on.  Typically, those things get pulled off in wrestling matches.

SavingPNG

Molly wanted me to see how cute she looked in her new accessory while holding a special toy.  Yep, pretty durn cute, Molly!

Another layer of spooky

cottage

SavingPNG
After our October’s First Friday weekend, Halloween needed to be taken down at Juju. I take clear plastic tubs with me to be packed up properly and brought home to store.  No use tossing it into a box, then putting it away later, right?

My process is to use as many clear tubs as I can, and to label solid ones.  They are all sorted into either season or color and stacked along the walls of my garage ready for the next time Ineed them.

Because no matter how good the weekend goes, there is always inventory left.  And I like to shake up the look of my space so, I switch up what I have there.

SavingPNG

Not everything got stored this time.  I pulled some of the stuff to add to my displays at home.  This year, I have seriously enjoyed my haunted cocoa station and turn the lights on every morning when I get up.  Just like I do with my Christmas lights.

A little extra twinkle around the cottage makes me smile.

SavingPNG

There were a few floral umbrellas spray painted black hanging from the ceiling at the mail.  I brought two of them into the kitchen to add to the existing decor.

SavingPNG

And kept one of my brooms inside too.

SavingPNG
I have plenty of orange stuff and dollar store decorations that Sugarwings and I have used for parties in the past.  If if set them out, it’s usually for a short time use or in the kiddo’s area.  But this black and white?  It hasn’t gotten old for me, even though my kitchen has been rockin this look since the end of August.

Funny, I debated adding to what I’d set out earlier, telling myself it was kinda late to be doing that just to pack it up again after the 31st.  Then I reminded myself it’s only mid October, and I have a couple weeks left to enjoy it.

After that, it took some willpower to stop myself from unpacking all the stuff I’d brought back from the antique mall.  But I managed.  This is plenty to keep me entertained, and I did such a good job of packing up the rest in my clear tubs… but they are calling to me, like a ghostly moan. “Oooohhaaahhoh, savaaave us from this box, let us cooome innn!”

A tub of treasure

antiques/junking, jewelry

SavingPNG
Jackpot!
At an estate sale, I bought tub of dirty, dusty jewelry, but could tell at a glance that it was worth washing.  What I didn’t see was that it was vintage new stock, still in original packaging, never worn!

SavingPNG

Some even had their display stand.  I was thrilled with this find, but had some more complicated cleaning ahead of than I had planned.  It was important to leave them on their cards, but most were paper and all were dirty.  I gently cleaned each with a toothbrush, paper and all.

SavingPNG

Some of the cards were a bit torn up, but most were in decent shape and looked great once I washed them.

In total, there were 155 old clip ons, maybe half of those are bead clusters.  The other half are nicely varied.  I also scored a couple dozen singles or broken bits to use in crafting.  And a pile of eighties pieces that I personally don’t care for, but which might be to someone else's taste.

SavingPNG

Here’s a bonus! Heavily tarnished, chunky silver pieces that have a nice glow once polished.

Overall, it was an exceptionally good garage sailing weekend.  I tended to buy a lot of project pieces and filthy stuff, but all worth the effort.  I’m not afraid of a little cleanup when it comes to bargains.

A light show in the sky

Uncategorized

SavingPNG

The Northern Lights were visible in Kansas again!

SavingPNG

From what I read, we weren’t supposed to have a viewing here, but when I heard that my family in Indiana was seeing them, I stepped out to look and was thrilled to catch the show.

SavingPNG

Tree and I had an adventure together, driving to darker spots to get a better look.  A quiet gravel road nearby was an ideal spot to lay on our backs and watch the skies through our phone cameras. We even saw a shooting star!

I felt doubly blessed.

Another left in the parking lot redo

Halloween treats

Enlight1910

After an exhilarating shopping experience at Good Juju, the clock struck 6pm and the day ended for Cinderella.  As she raced across the parking lot to her carriage, parked under the I70 overpass, her shoe flew off in the rush.

Enlight1903

I scooped it up and remade it.  You can see it pictured here next to her carriage. (Pumpkin)

Cindy, I am sorry if your Prince never found you without this shoe, but hey- finders keepers, right?

Enlight1904

It was first spritzed with bronzey-gold paint, then misted with a can of black spray paint.  I covered the soles, inside and out, with vintage paper.

The ruffles are dyed coffee filters, and her wings are from a cicada.  After I took this photo, I thought it looked like she was missing something, so I gave her a glittered, white pumpkin to hold.

Trouble with that was that her arms don’t bend.  So I had to snap them at the elbow and glue them in place with the punkin resting on her sparkly tutu.

I cannot resist an unloved and rejected doll

Hand painted

Enlight1908
No one bought this doll from Beth at Juju, so she placed it out in the parking lot where we have extra space for either clearance goods or overflow.  She told me to take it, and I said, only if it’s still there at the end of the sale.

Enlight1906

At the end of the day, there she was, forlorn and left in the gravel, overlooked by hundreds of shoppers.

Enlight1907

Poor Ani.

Was it the “substance” congealed on some parts of her? Or possibly her crunched in chest?  Probably that look on her face.
Enlight1905
I redid her face in the style of vintage, French sitting dolls.

After vigorously scrubbing off the uhm, substance of some kind.

Enlight1909

Next was a  new hairstyle made of angora. I brought the hair forward onto her throat so she no longer had a neck like a WWE wrestler.

I don’t sew, her delightful princess gown is pieced together from other doll clothes and bits of lace then glued into place.

The only thing missing?  Maybe a crown?  She deserves one to feel better after all the rejection she faced.

Oh, and maybe a bouquet of flowers to hide her muppety looking (but freshly painted) hands.
