When I was out junking on the East Coast, I noticed road signs that mentioned "Elizabethan Gardens" on Roanoake Island. Well, I'd just spent most of the previous day reading "The Other Queen" by Phillipa Gregory, about Mary Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth, so I was already in an Elizabethan frame of mind, and pulled over to see what it was about.
There was only one day available to play while my husband was working, and I'd already spent the morning out junking. So, I'd planned on heading back to the hotel to finish my book on the balcony or on the beach. But when I stumbled across this garden, I was entranced.
As I walked through this labyrinth of surprises, taking pictures and having so much fun, it occurred to me that I am officially a LITTLE OLD LADY now.
(well, maybe not so little, I'd already indulged in some pretty good vacation foods)
But there was something so magical and timeless about this woodland paradise that made me glad I'd made this choice. Even though 20 years ago,or even 5 or 10 for that matter, you couldn't have drug me away from the sand and sea.
Being a little old lady isn't such a bad thing. It just shocks me sometimes, when I realize that is what I am….
What a lovely garden tour you invited us all on. I understand the dilemma of choosing between the beach and a garden, but sometimes we must follow our the wind in a different direction. You reaped much treasure by doing so. Sea Witch
what a gorgeous place, i think i was a lol since birth
You are not a L.O.L. you are a mature person that has learned to appreciate art and nature over a good suntan! If Sugarwings has the fairy walk, this is just your version of the fairy walk. She’s just three, that just makes you 3+!
When I was younger I LOVED to read everything I could get my hands on about Mary Queen of Scots, she is a facinating character.

Never did I think I’d see the day when LOL things were fun and enjoyable. And then you have to put it into actual words! Life is so interesting . . .
I agree with Sandy, ~ you are NOT and L.O.L. (partly because, if that were true then that would make ME one!) ;-D
It’s just that your tastes have changed over the years, that’s all!! 🙂
Beautiful gardens..thanks for sharing!
My thoughts exactly, Karla ~ when did we age?!?! I don’t FEEL old! My hip daughter says my blog is my “myspace” (as she giggles uncontrolably). I told her she’ll be blogging before she knows it! I’ve spent much time the past couple of days reading up on all your past posts. I’ve been very lax in my visits this summer as my new little grandson demands much of my attention!! Come visit me when you get a chance. I miss you!
Big Hugs,

When I saw the “L.O.L”, I thought “Lady of Leisure”. Sounds much better than little old lady, doesn’t it?
😉

Good to know little old ladies get to do some totally enjoyable things …. but I thought you were only 50????……..Rachaelxo
No way is anyone going to peg you as a LOL!
i am not buying this LOL business for a minute Karla…you are WAY too beautiful and fun to be thought of as a LOL…
Thanks for coming by for a visit. I hope you’ll come by often. I look forward to getting to know you.

Hey, I resemble that! Martha
I love this beautiful garden, good choice : )
Kathy
I would have chosen the garden tour also! Looks wonderful!!!
🙂 T
Dear Karla, you are a……..
Lovely, Outstanding Lady!!
That is what the L.O.L. stands for. 🙂
I’m glad that you strolled through the
beautiful gardens…
Hugs,
Janis
Karla, I forgot to add to my previous post
that I believe the sweet Fairies brought
you to the gardens and I’m sure they
were peeking out here and there among
the flowers and foliage.
Did you see them? 🙂
When I was a young girl, I often took
walks on our property and there was
a sweet small babbling brook with tons of
ferns and Jack-In-The-Pulpit flowers and I
always felt the Fairies were hiding there.
I would sometimes leave little treasures for
them on the rocks and moss. It always
amazed me that the treasures would be gone
on my next visit. ???
Hugs,
Janis
Funny, you don’t look like a LOL!!
Hi Karla,
Isn’t that such an enchanting garden! I got to visit there a couple of years ago and loved it. I also loved that they had a little garden shop and sold plants too. I just had to bring something home with me.
I’d stroll in a lovely garden anyday. xo, suzy
Goodness Karla I couldn’t stop laughing and smiling because at 41 I guess I am officially an L.O.L. too :)I love so many things now that before I would consider borning and even better my idea of THE BEST TIME EBA…as my daughters say isn’t to be out drinking and partying but finding a really awsome antique mall, a bunch of great thrift stores in a close area or a flea market w/out my kids to keep askin me…Are we done yet? Can we go now? and if they have a lil tea shop or quiet lil snack area where I can just sit and watch people finding neat treaures and seein their reactions…well that is my idea of a wonderul time 🙂 So maybe my kids are right…I am as old as dirt 🙂 But Karla I really like the comment that Janis left where she said “L.O.L.= Lovely Outstanding Lady” seems to suit you to a T…Rose
I am only 32 and every summer I make my hubby stop there!! hehehe!! Looks like you had a fun afternoon though!!
change that mindset immediately! when you are 101 you can call yourself a little old lady. not a minute before!
Karla, I’m so glad you chose the garden. I enjoyed seeing it.
Hugs karen
Your not a lol! I have enjoyed gardens more than beaches all my life! I think your just changing priorities. You chose walking around a beautiful garden rather than sitting on your butt reading a book. I think that’s what makes you young!!!
Blessings,
Christine
I must bea little old lady too because I would have done the same thing!!!!
Karla,
I identify with this post! A friend and I have declared ourselves L.O.L.’s too. We have noticed ourselves being drawn to figurines while out flea marketing and we never used to like them, they remind us of our grandmothers homes who were filled with dust collecting knick knacks. Maybe we are not there yet as we have not actually been purchasing them!
Your anything but a L.O.L. you know have to have fun and inspire others to do the same. I like your not taking life to serious attitude.
roflmao
cuz i thought you meant…lol….
i’m just well seasoned…
