Dorkies in flight

dogs, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), puppies!

Scruffy 010
Our neighbor, Scruffy, came to visit. He is Twinkle's son and brother to my pups, but looks like a different species!  His fur is thick and black as can be.

They love to run together, and get so excited they practically fly.  Here, I caught them all mostly airborne. Dorothy Rosebud is my best flyer, she is the one in front.

Scruffy 018

Look at this furball! He is the puppy who had the dark face as a baby. I didn't think he'd turn silver and I think I'm right. Although,  Yorkies can surprise you, their color isn't set for months.  Eventually, all the baby fine puppy hair needs to be shaved off and the new, adult dog is revealed in its glorious new color.  But I hate to trim mine up too early, because I love that puppy stage and will miss it when they get their first hair cuts and look all grown up.

Our two are turning light and are so two toned and raggedy, they almost look like opossums.  We call them Crash and Eddie because the look like the two guys from Ice Age. Plus, they are such goofballs. Which is also why I call them all Dorkies instead of Yorkies. They are a group of dorkie and silly dogs.

What’s for lunch? Light Chicken Pot Pie and Rosemary Potato Garlic bread recipes

Food and Drink, Workshops

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 034
Usually, I'm not a lunch person.  A protein bar or yogurt at my desk is perfect. But I do love socialized lunches and going out with friends. Or fixing something special for company.  For the Valentine Journal Workshop, we had organic springtime greens with herbs, a fruit salad, rosemary garlic bread, and some chicken thing with puff pastry.

I don't know what to call it, only that anything you add puff pastry to becomes a special meal.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 029

It was easy to make.  Here is how I did it:

I boiled 5 large, bone in, skinless chicken breasts in 2 qts of water seasoned with sea salt, pepper and garlic.

While deboning the cooked chicken, I added two cups of rice to the pot, along with 3 finely chopped carrots and cooked that in the broth according to directions on the rice package.

In  a skillet, I sauteed half a red onion, two stalks of celery, and a red pepper, all chopped up together, with a splash of olive oil and seasoned with sea salt.

The veggie mix and chicken went back into the pot with the finished rice and broth along with a raw,  chopped broccoli crown, and I removed the pot from the heat so the brocoli didn't over cook, the hot broth just blanched it.

To that, I added  a pinch of poultry seasoning, and  a few shakes of Trader Joe's 21 Seasoning Salute.

8 ramekins were filled about 2/3 with the mixture, using a slotted spoon.  Over that, I ladled broth from the pot, just enough to cover the chicken, rice and veggies so it wouldn't dry out when baked.

With a cookie cutter, I cut hearts out of thawed puff pastry and added it to the top of each. The scraps from cutting hearts out of pastry got rolled together and bagged for the freezer to use later.

These bake at 375 just till the pastry browns.

But that's not all. This made enough to also fill an 8" round casserole pan, and I used the 2nd puff pastry sheet from the box to cover the whole dish, so I had a meal to feed my family later as well as individual dishes to feed my friends.  It can also be made up ahead of time, without baking, and kept in the fridge for a couple of days.  If you do that, you'll need to bake it longer.  Just enough to get hot through and through before the crust browns, so I set the oven a bit lower, 350, so the crust doesn't burn while waiting for it to get hot.

Its a lighter version of a pot pie, without the gravy and the bottom crust.

All of my table cloths are from garage sales, and some are in better shape than others.  By layering them all on top of each other, no one noticed the stains or holes.  At least that was the plan. Plus, I like the sheer, lacy cloth over the rose patterned one, it makes it a lot more lush.

Our bread was home made too.  I make up my own recipes as I go, but I've fixed this so many times, I can kind of wing it to tell you how much of what went into it.

Rosemary Potato Garlic Bread:

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 tablespoons organic sugar

2 teaspoons Guar Gum (helps the bread rise, keeps it light and airy, plus lowers cholesterol)

1-1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1-1/2 cup warm water

Add all of the above to the oiled pan in a bread maker

**************************************

1/2 cup instant potato flakes

1/4 cup golden flax seed

3 tablespoons dried rosemary

i tablespoon of fresh, minced garlic

3-1/2 cups organic, unbleached bread flour

Add to the top of the previous ingredients, do not stir.

**************************************

Make a well in the top of the flour pile with your finger and drop in 2-1/2 teaspoons of bread machine flour

Switch the machine to dough setting.  I don't leave mine in for the whole cycle, once it begins to rise, I transfer my dough to a greased bread pan and punch it down a few times.  Then I boil a cup of water in my microwave oven, and place the pan of dough in the microwave, to use it as a hot box to let the dough rise in.  My microwave is over the stove and has a light under it. I've found that with the light on, it stays warm.  If yours doesn't, try warming your stove with a pan of hot water in it, and then turning it off and setting the dough in the oven to rise.

It just seems to me that the bread is so much better when baked in a pan, not in the bread machine.

I oil the top and  bake it on 350 for about a half hour, or till its brown and crusty.

I was able to make the dough before everyone arrived, and bake it while we worked. The mini casserole, fake pot pies were also made ahead, so it was an easy lunch to fix during a workshop. I had time to create a couple of pages of my own while we were in the studio.

483135_10151375923374477_415997643_n

The fruit salad was every bit as simple, three pears, one mango, one pineapple, a bag of frozen blueberries and a quart of strawberries. All cut up and spritzed with lime juice, with about a teaspoon of sugar on top.

I was glad to have fruit salad to serve, because I forgot to turn on the oven for the chicken and everyone was hungry.

I brought out fresh bread and fruit salad to the studio, to hold everyone till the main meal cooked.  Oh well, these kind of things happen.  Quite often.  No one starved to death and I don't think anyone really minded waiting too much.

I figure that as long as we are having a good time, and everyone has plenty to eat, eventually, no one expects perfection.

Which is a good thing, because around here, they aren't going to find it!  I'd rather be relaxed and enjoying myself than worry about all the mistakes I could be making.  Life is too short to stress out over the little things.

I had such a nice time at the Valentine Journal workshop. There is something wonderful about a Valentine theme, that always makes me happy. Roses? Hearts? PINKS? All of it!

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 018

We had a small group, so only needed to use half of the studio. I used this half to set out extra supplies.  So, not only did we have kits stuffed with Vintagey goodies, I had enough extras to make dozens more books.  One table was just used to display previously made books as examples. I showed my travel journal, my samples for An Enchanted Affair, the Valentine book, as well as a couple of books from swaps I'd been in.

By the way, Kim was able to squeeze in one more table at her arty event this spring, and has sold all but one space at it! If you are interested, better jump in fast! Hope to see you there.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 019

Another table held lots of extra pretty papers, while a third was all tidbits, ribbons, lace, and embellishments.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 023

I should do fresh flowers in my studio more often, its a nice treat.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 021

Our local grocery store usually marks a dozen roses down to $1.99 every Monday, but for some reason, they were on sale this Friday too. So, I was able to set out flowers all around the house.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 022

When prepping for the class, I spent about 14 hours making kits, and thought I might just end up running away from home to get away from them.  What was I thinking, waiting till the last day to make them???? That isn't like me.  I sure learned a lesson, and will be getting a jump start on spring time class kits so this won't happen again.

Kits can be fun to make, and I enjoy playing with my piles of papers and deciding what to include, but not at the last minute.  I had to write instructions, edit photos, sort papers, plus dozens of other things that make the kits successful and well thought out. It shouldn't be done the day before the workshop!!

I made up what I thought were lots of extras, but not quite enough. They sold out in one day, thank you to all who bought them!  It is never any more trouble to make an extra 10 or so while putting together enough for a class, so I always make some to sell. Plus one for myself, so that I can pull things out during class to demonstrate and know that the kits are functional and have what they need in them.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 038

The best part of making a kit, is seeing how it is used.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 037

Of course, since they are vintage, no two are exactly alike, but still I love the way everyone changes things around so much and puts their own stamp of uniqueness on their work.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 041

And its very pretty to see how far some go to change it up.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 045

We do mini workshops for holidays throughout the year, just for my friends and their kids to come over and play, and of course, I have Birdsong too. (Which I have not done a single thing for yet this year! I need to gather my thoughts and get the website done for sign ups!!)

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 043

We did a Halloween gathering and then this little Valentine party, and I really enjoyed both. I would like to do more small, one afternoon workshops if possible. Its so much more intimate than a big to do. Of course, even Birdsong is not big at all, compared to most arty weekends, its 25 people and all cozy in my studio

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 042

Still, it would be nice to do a smaller class like this and have them quarterly or so.  Just a thought.  10 people or less, hanging out, chatting  all together instead of broken off in groups around the room.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 044

Either way, no matter how many come, I love having company in my studio.  Its not that I don't enjoy a good day alone with my creations, but since I have soooo many of those days, working all alone, its nice to have some company.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 047

I can't imagine any other job than the one I do (although the thought of one that pays better, is pretty tempting), but it does get lonely. Which is why having a blog and all of my blog friends is so nice.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 050

Of course, these guys too! They are great company when they aren't stealing things from me to shred.  Dorothy can't jump or climb because of the injury she had when she was tiny, but Albie is good at getting on the table and grabbing something fun for them to rip up.

Auntie Beth brought them some Valentine tees, and even girlie-ed up Dorothy's with some lace.
Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 053

She also brought this. Beautiful, isn't it?

Patterns0003

One of my guests brought this lovely, old image, and I was asked to copy it to share. I thought maybe you would like to have it too.  Just click on the image to open it to a larger window, then save it to your computer to print.

Patterns0001 (3)

And this one was in one of the kits and I was asked to copy it also.

When scanning it, I took a few moments to edit it in a romantic way.  Please save these the same way as the cabin picture.

Hunting for signs of the Big Giant Cat

cottage, Sugarwings

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 005
My son, Ryan, mentioned, oh- by the way, I saw that giant cat a couple weeks ago.  A couple of weeks ago?? And he doesn't tell me right away? Dogs, cats, chickens, and KIDS have wandered around in danger?

He said at first he thought it was Twinkle's boyfriend, the neighbor's tall, tan, standard poodle. Then realized it walked different than a dog and took another look realizing it was a huge cat.  The trappers had told us it might come back and that we should call them back if we saw signs.

I wanted to be sure, since it was NOT cheap to have them out to set traps last fall. We spent a few hundred dollars on catching oppossums, but no cat.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 001

So, on a snowy day, Sugarwings and I bundled up to go hunting.  We thought we might see footprints in the snow.

Our first step was to climb up high and look out over the valley and down the trail to make sure it wasn't waiting for us. We wanted to see footprints, not the cat itself! Since there were no leaves, and the trail was quite wide, we could see all the way to the highway. We didn't cross the creek to go deeper into the woods, we stayed on the big, open trail.

She carried a big stick and we made lots of noise. The cat seems to only be seen around dusk, so we figured mid day was a good time to look.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 011

She decided that she would be a Knight in Shining Armour and the Big Giant Cat, or Bobbed Cat, as she calls it, was really a dragon.  Her stick was a sword, and we were ready to search out the dragon's liar.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 007

The snow was too spotty to show footprints. We didn't even see any prints from deer, and I know we have dozens of those out there.  We did find poo, and I took some photos of it, so we could compare it to pictures of cat scat online.  I'm sure you can imagine that part without me showing you the actual pictures.

Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 017

We also found this tree, used as a scratching post.   The marks are about chest high!!

After doing some research, we found this, which fit perfectly with what we saw:

Identify bobcat scat by noting its size, composition and
location. Bobcat scat ranges in size from about 2 to 6 inches in length
and is usually less than an inch in height. It is often but not always
segmented, and looks very similar to the feces of domesticated cats,
except that it is slightly larger. Bobcats tend to leave scat in the
middle of a road or trail or at an intersection or a turn in the trail.

It is believed they do this as a method of marking territory and
communicating with other animals.

  • Look for other possible signs made by bobcats. Bobcats will
sharpen their claws on trees, and claw marks can often be see in tree
    bark
. Bobcats will scrape dirt or snow over both their urine and feces.
Claw marks may be seen from this covering, as well as from when they
make scratches in the snow when rubbing their glands over an area to
    mark territory.

  • Valentine journal workshop cougar hunt 012

It was quite an adventure for us, we had a lot of fun pretending to hunt dragons, but it was also educational as well as some imaginary game time. We learned to watch carefully for movement in the woods, and also to search the trail for signs of animals. We did see some raccoon prints, and talked about different animals and how to tell what they are by the tracks they leave behind.  I also made her aware that the woods are full of creatures, even though it is our own Fairy Berry Trail, and we think of it as a play ground, it really belongs to the creatures that live there, not to us.

Looking up pictures online to compare to our photos was a good project for her too.  I want her to respect the woods and the wildlife, and think about them as a place for animals to live, and not to run out there without an adult at her side.

Until we can get the trapper back out here, the woods are officially closed for play time. The chickens are on lock-down and the dogs don't leave the fence.  No children can play outside without supervision.

I sure hope that Trapper Tom can help us out.  Please wish us luck with this.

A Hawaii Travel Journal part two

    Travel, vintage paper/collage art

    Traveljournalhawaii 037
Taking a journal along on our trip was such fun. I'm really glad I had it, and spent quite a bit of time doodling away while sitting on the balcony and watching the waves.

    Traveljournalhawaii 006

The book was pre-made and ready to fill once I got there, and I packed an assortment of markers, ribbons, papers, and doodads to add to it.  As I worked, I saved spaces for photos to add later.  Trouble is, I didn't take enough pictures, or save enough tidbits of travel stuff.  When I do this again, I'll know what to look out for and will remember to keep snippets of the days.  I'd like to have had more papers to add to the book, but I also enjoyed drawing in it, so I guess it turned out ok.

    Traveljournalhawaii 015

On this page, I used a piece of a pamphlet that came with some sea glass earrings that I bought (upper left hand corner) and then drew over it, so it didn't look so white, white against all the color of the rest of the page.

Each morning with my coffee on the balcony, I worked on a page about the previous day.

And there was plenty going on to fill a page!

Its about my husband's activities too,  he was off being adventurous with his brother-in-law quite a bit, while his sis and I were more low keyed.  You can see here, that there was surfing and scuba diving, but neither were my own activities.  I tried to dive, but just couldn't do it.

    Traveljournalhawaii 011

I was the biggest wimp ever.  And I am an ocean lover. I'm not afraid of the waves or sea, can swim very well and love to explore. My trouble with continuing the lesson was unexpected. I shocked myself with my cowardice.  My husband is very claustrophobic, I thought he might have trouble, but I didn't expect any trouble from myself!

    Traveljournalhawaii 013

As a child, I had asthma and remember emergency hospital trips. But as an adult, my asthma is so mild, I forget  that I have it and rarely even consider myself asthmatic.

When we signed up for scuba, we were asked if we had asthma or heart conditions and I said no.  Then, I had a mini asthma attack while running and laughing on the beach, and from that moment, I started thinking about what would happen if I had one under the ocean. I freaked myself out before we even got into the pool to try out the gear.  So, of course, I performed dismally in that frame of mind.

And I was crying like a baby when I had to do the walk of shame back to the gear drop off as the rest of my group flippered off into the ocean. Not my proudest moment when I had to come out of the pool at that crowded and lovely resort and walk past all the vacationers in chaise lounges who had been watching my failure with interest like I was the afternoon's soap opera.

    Traveljournalhawaii 009

Besides my wimpiness at that activity, the trip was great. We laughed and played, and rested and ATE all week.

This page has a little cartoon I did about a joke i pulled on the beach.  A couple asked me to take their picture and my husband offered to pose with them, just being silly.  Unbeknown to them, I maneuvered the camera so that he was in the background of the picture.  Only on one take, though, so that if they honestly didn't want his photograph, they could use a different shot. Although, he is a cutey, they should be glad to have it!

    Traveljournalhawaii 020

The city block sized banyan tree in Lahaina was the inspiration for this page, I drew it from memory when I got back to the room instead of waiting till the next day when the picture was fuzzy in my mind.

    Traveljournalhawaii 022

This page is a little different than the rest, the messages about what we did that day are hidden in the branches.

    Traveljournalhawaii 025
The road to Hana was such a jam packed day of sight seeing, I had to use two pages. I sketched out a map of the island and wrote messages along where the road goes about what we saw.

    Traveljournalhawaii 027
I would highly recommend this outing, but its a hard one for anyone who gets carsick.  Like I did.  Mostly we broke up the day long drive over twisty, turny cliffs by roadside jaunts to visit waterfalls and bamboo forests. But there were a couple of longer stints in the car where I must have been a bit green because everyone was asking me how I was doing, when I thought I was being very discreet about trying not to spew.

But, the beauty I saw on this ride was worth every bit of discomfort.  The queasiness was fleeting, but the memories of the beauty are forever.

    Traveljournalhawaii 039
More twisty roads went up to the volcano, but again, WORTH it!   I drugged myself up with non drowsy dramamine and that helps.  I also was careful to eat bland, solid food. No sloshy stuff like soup that would sway in my tummy when we went around a curve.

    Traveljournalhawaii 041
We visited a lavender farm near the volcano, and that was one of my favorite places.

    Traveljournalhawaii 034
Since I didn't collect enough stuff to fill the book, I slipped our itinerary into a pocket. Boring.  Next time I'll scoop up lots of mementos to add to the pages.

    Traveljournalhawaii 035
At least I had some maps for these pockets.  I folded the map inside out so that the interesting part showed instead of the bright red "FREE MAP" on the cover  peeking out.

    Traveljournalhawaii 033
My pictures are added in a jumble, different days or areas on one page together, but I was matching up sizes and colors to make a pretty layout.  In my world, pretty counts a lot more than accuracy.

    Traveljournalhawaii 024
Here is an instance where I was smart enough to save something from the trip, the key card holder from the hotel.  I glued it down, drew on and embellished it, and added a photos of us in the key card slots.

    Traveljournalhawaii 032
Years ago, we went hiking in Arkansas and kissed under a waterfall.  Sugarwings loves to hear stories about romance and true love, and never gets tired of us telling her about our special moment under the falls.   This time we weren't able to hike over to the falls, but at least we got to share a smooch in front of them.

On our last night, we stumbled upon a row of tables set up on the beach and had to stay for dinner.  It was such a romantic setting, just at sunset, right on the ocean. The restaurant was the Westin hotel and the food was the best we'd had all week.

    Traveljournalhawaii 031

My husband wasn't too impressed with himself as a merman in this picture, but Sugarwings adores it and jumped up and down with excitement when she saw how I'd cut his photo out and added it to a mermaid tail.

The photo is from our day of whale watching. Other people might have glued down actual photos of the boat or the whales, but I kind of like this picture as a remembrance.

    Traveljournalhawaii 030

Now that I have finished my book, I guess I need to get some "real" work done.

    Traveljournalhawaii 029

It was nice to scam some extra vacation time to complete this, but I can't eke out my time off for too long.  I have a workshop to get ready for!

    Photos of that next.

It was nice to come home to the puppeesh, I'd missed the Twin Terrier Terrors. And the grand fairies. I've been making up for lost time with plenty of snuggles since I got home.

    Hawaii 066

Here i am trying to gracefully pose by a waterfall, and I slipped just as the photo was being taken.

Its not easy to go from Paradise to real life, so I've eased into it with playtime with the kiddos and finishing my travel journal.  Yes, I know, I should be back to work, but it's taking me some time to get into gear.  Maybe next week I'll have some new goods for the Boutique.  I really do need to beef up my pay pal account, we went broke in Hawaii.

    Literally, out of money!

We had no idea that there would be so many cash only places. Plus tips were cash only for classes and couldn't be added to the credit card when the class was paid for. And the surfing instructor wouldn't even take a card for the class itself.

    Hawaii 049

Before the trip, we'd just gotten new debit cards and changed our password, and then promptly forgot it.  And we never do cash advances on our credit card, so didn't have that pin number handy either.  We arrived on Thursday and realized by Saturday that we were low on cash.

    Hawaii 021

Then we also realized it was a three day weekend and we couldn't get ahold of the bank. Luckily, we had my pay pal business account, but unluckily, I'd transferred cash from it to our checking account for the trip and had only a couple hundred left in it!

In Hawaii, that isn't much more than an afternoon's spending.

    Hawaii 063

We came up with a plan where my husband could go to my online store and buy a bunch of tutorials from me to refill the account if needed, or we could wait till Tuesday to get hold of the bank after President's Day.

But by Tuesday, we were pretty much done with lesson type activities and souvenir shopping. We were were ready to roll on the Road to Hana and visit the volcano the next day, so we had a couple of days where we did okay without much cash on had.

    Hawaii 017

If we ever go back to Hawaii, I will know to pack one suitcase full of money and one full of light sweaters and wind breakers. (this single white sweater that I brought was kind of grimy by the end of the week, and I had to buy a hoodie. Somewhere that took credit cards)

    Hawaii 117
We had a welcoming committee waiting when we got back from Hawaii.  Sweet Sweet Sweety was happy to see us and was perched by the door asking for attention as we pulled up.  (my porch needs some attention too, huh? Christmas branches? Let's just pretend they are "winter decorations" not holiday ones, okay?)

    Hawaii 118

The grand fairies liked the souvenir tees they got, but I think what they really liked was the boxes and bags of macadamia nut and chocolate candies we filled a carry on up with.

    Hawaii 011

Our trip was the best ever.  Terry and Dale, my in-laws, were there for 3 weeks (lucky ducks) and greeted us at the airport with leis. I wore mine till it was brown and limp, and still the scent lingered on, so I kept it draped across the lamp shade in our room.

    Hawaii 036

I hope we get to go back again some day.  It could very well be the prettiest place in the world.  Even the overly populated and tourist areas are lovely.

    Hawaii 053

Its definitely varied, from dessert, to bamboo, to ocean, to rain forest.  All of that on a  single polka dot in the middle of the Pacific.

    Hawaii 023

We participated in lots of tourist activities.  Our travel buddies had been there a week before us and knew all the best places to go ahead of time, not just from that week, but from years of experience.  It was nice to let go and let them plan.  They were kind enough to haul us from one fantastic place to another.

    Hawaii 032

Terry even took me to a swap meet for some cute little ticky tackys to take home  as remembrances.  And she isn't a swap meet type shopper.  I think she enjoyed it too, we both made a good haul there.

    72914_10151333190269477_1046056336_n

The swap meet had lots of $4 tee shirts, plenty of junk, but also some nice things made by local artists, farmer's market goods, and a few vintage things.  Terry surprised me with this necklace from a jewelry vendor whose work I admired. I don't know how she managed to sneak buying it with me standing right next to her!  It was a sweet surprise. The stone is larimar, and it will always remind me of the ocean in Maui.

    Hawaii 034

My favorite part of the whole trip was just simply being there, soaking it all in, listening to the ocean outside the balcony of our hotel.

    Hawaii 035

I almost admitted to you that my most favorite part was sleeping, but I don't want everyone to know just how boring I really am.

But, dang! That was the BEST sleep of my life!  Not only was the weather perfect, and the air bug free so that we could leave the sliding doors open all week, but we could listen to this fountain as well as the ocean in our dreams.

I slept 8-10 hours, and while it felt like a deep, deep, restful snoozefest, I still was aware of the sounds of the water. So soothing.

    480831_10151329254204477_60346473_n

My body stayed on Kansas time, and I was up before the sun every day about 5 or 6 am.  For those of you who did the math, yes, I was in bed by 8 some nights.  I never see the sunrise around here, I'm never up that early on Central Time, so it was quite a treat.  My mornings over looking the ocean and drinking Kona coffee were highlights of my trip.   Waking up was as much fun as going to sleep.

Oh my, I am a little old lady, aren't I????  Who goes to Hawaii then talks about how good the sleepin weather is there???

    Hawaii 005

The food wasn't bad either. I loaded up at a local fruit stand a couple of times.

    Hawaii 004

The same fruit I buy in Kansas, was sooooo different there.  The pineapples were beyond juicy and ripe, so much so that there was no core at all, we ate the whole thing. No fibery center like we have in the ones at home.

Funny, though.  Roadside, the pineapples were $10, and at the Safeway they were $7.  Today at Walmart in KS they were only $2. Now I have to say, the fresh in Maui ones were so good, they were worth ten bucks, but it confuses me that its cheaper to ship them across the world than to buy them straight off the bushes.

Everything there was pricey.  Beyond pricey.

But the beauty was free.  I loved the little touches I found, like this painted weed outside a store.

And the floral message left in the banyan tree courtyard.

Little details kept catching my eye, like this recycled glass used in planters of a parking lot. It sparkled so bright, I was drawn right to it.  We were hunting back and forth, up and down for a parking spot, but instead of watching out for one and being a helpful passenger, I kept saying, "Is that GLASS?"  "That is so sparkly, what on earth do you think it is?"  "Maybe that is glass!"

Parking is not easy on Maui.  Lot of cars and not enough spaces to put them. Plus the spots are tiny.  Who drew the parking lot lines anyway?  Some one who only drives a moped?

I have more photos and more to say, but I have a grand fairy visiting now and need to go scoop up my hugs. I have ten days of lost huggin time to make up for.

    To be continued…..

ps- last day to enter the drawing for one of Amy's books!

    A Hawaii Travel Journal

    Travel, vintage paper/collage art

    Odds 023
For my trip to Hawaii, I made up a couple of travel journals, one for me, and one for my sister-in-law, Terry, who we are meeting up with in Maui.

    Odds 033

This one is for her.   The cover is layered in papers, images, paint, and modelling paste.

    Odds 034

This one is mine, done in the same way. Its not quite complete, but I can finish my own any time. I wanted to  make sure the gift for Terry was ready for the trip.

    Odds 029

My plan is to sit on the balcony and watch the ocean, relaxing  while I snip and glue as our husbands play golf.

I'm packing old papers, ribbons, lace, and all the essentials to work on these while we are there.

    Odds 003

Usually, I'm not a big fan of scrap book paper, it does have its time and place, and this book was right for it. I bought a big, tropical themed stack pack for the main pages.

Then, I created some home made papers for accents.

    Odds 004

Using bubble wrap and a wide brush, I blobbed and blotted colors till I got something I thought would look good in the books.

    Odds 025

Some of it I tore before gluing in.

    Odds 024

And I made lots of pockets to fill up with mementos, while leaving plenty of space for journalling too.

I had a great day working on these, I spent an entire afternoon and evening in the studio watching a whole season of Parenthood that I'd recorded and saved.  That show had me laughing and crying as I worked, this was a rough season for those Bravermens. After suffering through all of that with them, I was sooo ready for a vacation!

Hopefully, I'll have a full book to show you when I return.

    Felted pink hearts

    holiday decor

    Odds 013
Some of these hearts were cut from felted wool (in a perfect pink!) for the Valentine Art Journal workshop that I am doing on Feb 2nd.

    Odds 001

And some, I just wanted to play with.  On this, I used cream felt to make the big heart, and added lace, ribbon, and jewels.

    Odds 002

Inside is one of the tiny pink hearts.

    Peek-a-boo!

Even when my house is cleaned up, it still looks "homey".  Toys, books, a soft blanky left out, that never bothers me.  I smile when I see reminders of the grand fairie's last visits.

But this is just a bit much, isn't it?  As I was about ready to leave for my trip, I discovered that my dog is in heat. And messy as can be. Ugh. I had to cover up everything in house just in case she jumped on something while I'm away. Towels and old blankets drape all the furniture.  I hate leaving Sandy to deal with this and I hate leaving my house looking like a wreck, but man, am I ever ready to get away.

Aunt Sandy will be watching Twinkle and will keep her locked in the studio (where there is a moppable cement floor) while I am gone.  But, yuck. Double Yuck.

Sorry,  I do tend to talk about unpretty things, don't I?

    Ffd

There is plenty of floor cleaner made up for Aunt Sandy to use.  I make my own, using white vinegar, orange peels, and a few drops of lavender oil, and of glycerin.

You are supposed to strain it, but I never do. I just leave the peels in the jar.

And letting it age is good, but I use it up before its ready and it still works fine.

This January has been mild so far, a bit cold, but not too bad. Still, I've craved green, so I  made up some planters, but that is not the same as spring air and being outdoors in the gardens.  Carol brought me the flowers last week and they were just right for this display.

My trip to Hawaii should cure my yearning for growing things, a week in paradise is just what I need right now.  Although I almost didn't get to go! At 24 hours pre-flight, I went to print my boarding pass and discovered that my ticket was for the WRONG DATE.

We bought tickets months in advance, using my husband's travel points for a free flight, and booked it for the wrong day.

I had to scurry to get a new ticket, and I can tell you that it was NOT free. Not close.  At all.  My trip is beginning with a huge expenditure that we sure didn't expect.

But- I'm lucky we could pay it.  I'm lucky that there was a seat available. I'm lucky to be going to freakin Hawaii!!  So what if I will have to watch my spending there since we blew our budget on our date screw up?  I'm still lucky to be going.
