Bookie

Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), family, paintings, yorkies

2dogs

Poor Bookie.  He just had his 14th birthday and isn't doing so well.  See how he lists to the side? That is permanent. I wonder if he's had a stroke? We've bought him a space heater and the guy rarely leaves his pillow by the warm air now.  He is only sitting on the couch to please me, and desperately wants to get back to his pillow.

3dogs

Its so sad to see our pets age.  To me, he'll always be a baby, but actually, he's a little old man.  And smells pretty bad too.  Sometimes I have to poke him two or three times to see if he is still alive, and I am dreading the day when the pokes don't get him to move. On the other hand, I will be relieved to think of him falling asleep on his favorite pillow by the space heater and drifting off to comfort. I can tell he is just not been himself for yeas, but lately, it seems much worse.

Booker 002

I've gotten used to Bookie hiding away, apart from the family and have let him go his own way. But opening up the boxes of hand painted ornaments from years past and seeing his happy little face, in a younger, happier time made me realize just how much he had changed.

You know, this isn't the post I started to write, it was going to be photos of my holidayed up living room. But I think I'll save that one for another day, and go hold my little stinky guy for a bit and tell him I'll always love him while I still can.

A warm pink glow to ward off the freezing weather

Just a note to let you know that my email is being a bit screwy.  Its not a Typepad issue, Typepad has been very sweet and cooperative lately. I don't know what the deal is, just that I respond to emails (not just on comments, regular emails too) and they are not getting through.

Its frustrating to answer emails, then get a message from the Postmaster or the Mailer-Daemen saying they are undeliverable.  Sorry if you were one of the dozens of people I couldn't respond to!  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason, some (quite a few, actually!)  messages just are hitting a dead end.

Snow

We've had our first snow and it was a doozy.  More cold than deep, but enough to keep me indoors by the roaring fire. Trouble is, my husband is out of town and the stack of wood is getting low.  I'm feeling like a wimp, but just DO NOT want to go out there in the single digit weather and fill a wheelbarrow with wood.

On the other hand, a fire in the wood stove sure feels better than just turning up the thermostat. (and is much cheaper too!) I'd better man-up and go load the wheel barrow.

1
We've been staying indoors decorating and redecorating the tree.  I think that Sugarwings will make her pink tree an ongoing project for the season.

2

Each ornament has been on every single branch of her tree at least once so far.  Sometimes all the decorations seem to be on the same branch at the same time.

6

I filled a basket will all of the unbreakable ones and let her do as she pleased with them.  Of course, she had a little bit of help from Twinkle.

4

Although, after a couple of hours of hard work, even Twinkle was getting tired.  And Sugarwings was just getting started.

3

I don't think this will get old for my fairy grand baby, she's in pink heaven with that glowing tree.

(and I am loving those heavenly curtains!)

Fan
As for me, I think I'm done with my share of hall decking. Its a mini explosion of holiday glam this year for me, and I'm kind of liking it kind of laid back.

Chandy

Well, laid back for ME, that is!

Fan wreath
These peacock feather fans go a long way in adding some flair when I tied one to a lamp shade and another to a plain white feather wreath.

Years ago, I used to raise peafowl and these feathers were gathered from Percy.  He dropped them all every summer and it was a treasure hunt for me to crawl around the barn and walk out in the woods every day searching for feathers. Some days, I 'd find one or two, other days maybe a couple dozen.

Fans box 004

Now, I've taken bundles of the plumes and wrapped them with vintage ribbons, added a millinery flower and a jewel.  Plus a touch of glitter.

There are a couple left from Miss Frenchie's and I have them listed in the Boutique, as well as the celluloid box I've posed the fan next to.

Heavenlypaper

Don't forget that you can win this book by Amy Barickman (isn't she a peach to offer it?) Along with the book, you'll get a couple of hankies from me to use in the projects and a gift certificate from Amy to use for downloads from Vintage Workshop.

My December giveaway is open to everyone. No tricks where you have to post about it on your blog, or add yourself as a follower.  All comments, all posts in the month count.  I just like to say thanks for taking the time to come by to visit!

I just wish you were here in person and could help me heft that wheelbarrow of wood.

Jumping with JOY about the new curtains!

Xmas decor 09 012

I love these curtains!

Right now, they are just draped over the tension rod, but I think they deserve better than that. I've got some better ideas for hanging them, later when I get time.

026

Today was spent decking the halls, I still haven't unpacked from Miss Frenchie's sale.  There are more photos from that event to show but I just had to post about my dream curtains first!

When Carol  and I did an article for Romantic Country, she brought similar curtains for us to use to style the photos.  I fell head over heels in love with them, and since then have been looking for some of my own.

Pre shoot 054

Here is one of Carol's curtains, that we draped over a garden chair. This is the back of the chair, tied up with flowers and a vintage bag.

At the time, I didn't know that these panels were called "French netting" but I knew I wanted some.

I'm thrilled to get a set for my kitchen, plus one extra panel that went into the bedroom.

Xmas decor 09 019

Right now, I am surrounded by boxes of Christmas pretties and am trying to get my home all decorated for the holidays before some buddies come over tomorrow for a holiday/birthday brunch.  I'd have been ready, but had a little side track this afternoon, Sugarwings dropped by and wanted to help with the decorating project.  She's cute, but her home decor skills need work.

So, I've gotten a bit behind.  Oh well, it will get done. Whats up is up, what isn't will get shoved back into the closet to set up later.

Xmas decor 09 018

I almost missed book club tonight to stay home and finish my hall decking after Sugarwings left with her Daddy. But then, I realized how silly that was!  My home is about my happiness, and shouldn't be about slaving away to make it perfect!  The friends coming over tomorrow will enjoy their breakfast just fine with only one Christmas tree decorated. I have a feeling that they won't even know the difference.

Xmas decor 09 017

So, I went to book club, had a fun evening, laughing with friends and sipping wine and now will make up some fruit salad and an egg casserole for the morning.  Then, I'll see what decorating I can finish up, and like I said, the rest of the opened boxes of decorations gets slid right back into the closet.  If I don't have a chance to get any more done, then so what? I had a beautiful time with Sugarwings, and such fun at book club.

Those are the memories I'll keep, not the ones about how great my tablescape looked this year.

Hey, I'm not saying that pretty doesn't matter. It matters a LOT to me.  And its worth the extra time to make things nice. But- not worth stressing out about or missing out on other fun times.  So, I'll pretty up and do it with joy. When it becomes work instead of fun, that is when I know I need to step back and take a break.

Xmas decor 09 023

Two of my favorite words at the holiday are Joy and Merry.  Words to live by!

I made this banner from vintage album mats, bits of lace hand chrocheted by my Great Aunt Caroline, and French alphabet cards (although, what does it matter if they are French, if they are only a letter, not a word?? Who knows??)

The rhinestone baubles I added reminded me of the letters on each card.  What do you think? In the close ups, can you see the shapes of the letters in the jeweled pieces?

OK, I'm off to make fruit salad for brunch.

What an event! Miss Frenchie's was once again, a beautiful place to be!  The barn was magically transformed into a winter wonderland of treasures.

Miss frenchies s09 006

Miss frenchies s09 012

Miss frenchies s09 016

Sadly, our friend, Elizabeth wasn't able to set up for the sale, but she did drive in from St. Louis to visit and shop.  Her over the top, brilliant displays were missed, but we were glad to see her.  Willow's Nest stepped in to fill the barn annex where Elizabeth was before, and I have to tell you, they were amazing. My chair was situated so that I had a view of their wares and GORGEOUS set up the whole weekend, and it was all I could do to stay in my own booth. I felt drawn back to their space to wander around and drool on things.

I certainly hope that for our next Miss Frenchie's event, we get both Elizabeth and Willow's Nest! Wouldn't that be something magnificent???

Why, oh why, did I not buy one of Linda's sweet vintage coin purses with a millinery rose tucked in, so I could hang it on my own tree?? She only had a few of them and they were really reasonable ($10).  I'd be kicking myself if my feet weren't still so cold. I'm afraid a toe would snap off if I tried to kick anything.

Miss frenchies s09 116

Once my feet get cold, they just don't warm up, no matter what I do.  I slipped my gloves onto them, and borrowed a rug from the entry way to keep off the cold cement, but did not dip them into my hot coffee like I really wanted to.

Miss frenchies s09 102

Debbie, of Curious Sofa, was serving delicious soup that warmed me up from the inside out, that helped.  And we were so busy, that most of the time I forgot how cold my toes were.

Miss frenchies s09 025

Carol, of Raised in Cotton,  was my near neighbor and her spot was a joy to the eyes too. Plus, she is always ready for a laugh or a story. Its always fun to be near Carol.

Miss frenchies s09 022

Near us was Angela, of Angel Court, who brought sparkly beauties that matched her outgoing, and sparkling personality.

Miss frenchies s09 003

Linda, of Willow's Nest, is an astounding individual with a sense of style like no one else.  Even when dressed like a Snow Queen, she has a warm personality that draws you near. And a wealth of information about antique shows!

I really enjoyed being her neighbor for the day and seeing her creations. She was a Silver Bella vendor too, but I didn't get a chance to talk to her then, so was really glad to be set up near her for this show.

Miss frenchies s09 129

Another new friend from this show, was Joyce.  I've bought things from her at my favorite antique mall in the world, Rusty Chandelier, but had never met her before.

And yes, she sold me the curtains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I've already hung them up, it was the first thing I did when I got home last night. I still had my coat on, and was climbing up on a chair to play with the fabulous, old, French netting before I even said hello to Twinkle. I'll have photos of my new kitchen look soon.

Miss frenchies s09 090

Beth was my next door neighbor on the other side, but the way our booths were set up, we really didn't get much of a chance to hang out.  We'll have to schedule a craft day for some catch up time.

Miss frenchies s09 125

Her booth was a hit, she not only makes cool stuff, she searches out and finds the coolest, old things imaginable by attending every single auction and estate sale that she can find in the greater Kansas City area. Then she marks it up about 2 or 3 cents over what she paid for it and people swarm in to buy it!

(she's a brilliant accountant, so I'm sure she is making a profit somehow, but man, her prices are so good, it doesn't seem like she could be!)

Miss frenchies s09 097

Here is another view I had from my spot. Barbara Farmer's rich colored, sequin fruit was a splash of vibrancy that kept drawing my eye all day.

Miss frenchies s09 080

And what on Earth is wrong with me, that I didn't snap up one of Lesa Daily's birds???????

She  makes the most magical creations.  As soon as my feet warm up, I'll need to give myself a kick for missing those too.

Miss frenchies s09 106

Here is a bit of French by Design's goodies brought back from their European sprees.  I don't think I can show you my booth today, after all these exquisite treasures.

Mine are all from rural Kansas garage sales, not world class antiques….

Have I mentioned how LUCKY I am to be a part of such a great show? Its not just the event itself (which is quite wonderful, beautiful, and lucrative!!), its the atmosphere of being around such talented and giving women that make the weekend so special for me.

No matter how cold my toes are.

DecemBrrrrrrrrhhh! Scenes from a set up

antiques/junking, Miss Frenchie's, vintage paper/collage art

I wanted to let you know that for some reason, quite a few of my emails are coming back as undeliverable.  If you didn't receive a reply from me, hey, it isn't MY fault! But, still, sorry that they are not reaching you.

Miss frenchies set up09 008

This sweet little snow ball, is Pearl, Debbie's dog.  She seems snug and cozy as can be on this pillow while her 'mom' sets up her display for Miss Frenchie's sale this weekend, but she is probably feeling as frosty as her snow white coat looks!  We had NO HEAT while setting up the barn today for the sale. The furnace was out, and will be fixed by tomorrow when the guests come, but man, was it cold setting up today!

Miss frenchies set up09 023

You can practically see Greg shaking with the cold! We all were.  Greg does these beautiful calendars, I'm sure you've seen.  Its great to have such wonderful artists as part of the show. I just hope his poor fingers didn't get frost bite today and ruin his career.

Miss frenchies set up09 017

As cold as it was, the cockles of my heart were warmed by the site of these lace panels!

Miss frenchies set up09 016

I want them for my home!! I pre-shopped a bit and was told that I could maybe buy these, or at least would have first shot at them if the dealer decides to sell them. She wasn't sure if she would keep them or let them go. I sure fell for them, and would love to see them hanging in my kitchen…. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Currently, I have curtains from Bed Bath and Beyond, and honestly could do better. I've been searching for years for something that would be elegant, old, and affordable all at the same time.  This would fit the bill at $100 for 6 panels.  I hope she does decide to let me have them!  (BB&Beyond curtains are $40 each, and these are in a whole other league than those, so would be quite the beautiful bargain!!)

Miss frenchies set up09 028

Carol, who is normally neutral, is going for a splash of red. I can't wait to see her display when it is done. Everything she does is styled to perfection!

Miss frenchies set up09 011

My pal, Gwen, imports all her goods from shopping sprees in France.  She's made these ornaments from some ephemera gathered there.

She has great stories of her travels, and my dream is to some day take a guided French Flea market tour with her.  Of course, my usual shopping is Kansas garage sales, so this will probably stay just a dream, not a reality.

Miss frenchies set up09 024

Willows Nest Farm has more than just the beginnings of a beautiful set up.

Miss frenchies set up09 027

Down to the smallest detail, their spot is amazing.  I can't wait till I get the feeling back in my poor frozen toes so I can explore there.

My booth? Its not done yet. I was way too cold to finish. I was working away for hours, before I heard the furnace was broken. I was trying to put my best face forward, go with the flow and not get too upset about the cold, but when I heard that the furnace was not lit at all, I gave up!  I figure I'll go back and set up tomorrow AFTER it is fixed! No reason to power through and be brave in the cold if the heat will be on tomorrow.

Plus, I am so relived that our shoppers and guests won't have to deal with the cold, I was worried that the barn just wasn't going to be warm. Its a relief to know there was an actual problem, not just draftiness!
And, we have a WARM room for the guests to wait in for the doors to open. No long line in the cold.

Here is a little December gift for you, a calendar I scanned from an old book for you to use in your projects or just to print and keep on your desk to write notes to yourself on.

Full moon 023

Until the heat is fixed, I'm cozying up to the wood stove and starting the book I need to have finished for book club on Monday.  Got a bit of a late start…

Isn't this a glorious full moon? I don't know what that ring around it is called, but to me, it sure looks like a fairy circle.

recycled cookies???

Uncategorized

Jessi is
having her annual cookie party, but I am busy with Miss Frenchie's
Holiday Broncante this weekend and couldn't bake any cookies! So, green
living recycler that I am, I decided to recycle an older post about some
hand painted cookies. Complete with a baby picture of my Sugarwings, with a big smile on her tiny little face.

Big jessi

Thanks for hosting, Jessi! I'm pre-posting this, since I'll be busy setting up the sale while the party is going on, but I look forward to blog hopping and reading about all the cookie party stories when I get back. That is one of the joys of a virtual party, it never ends!

Which reminds me, I've been thinking about hosting another "What do you LOVE about your Holiday Home?" What do you think?

Sugarwings Sugarcookies

Sugar_cookies_007

You add food coloring to clear Karo Corn syrup to make your "paint".Sugar_cookies_008

I used coffee stir sticks to mix the colors.Sugar_cookies_017

After baking a batch of sugar cookies, I spread white canned icing on one at a time as I was ready to paint them.  If you ice them ahead of time, the icing sets up too hard to paint on.

I dipped a brand new paint brush into the food coloring and started to paint.Sugar_cookies_019

For a rose, I used the red food coloring in the clear syrup, and
swirled it around, mixing it with the icing itself, which made some
areas pink.  I went back with a dot of red on my brush to add a center
of the rose.Sugar_cookies_020

Using the green and yellow colors, I added leaves and vines.

On some cookies, I used colored sugar sprinkles on the edges. (that also needs to be done while the icing is still soft, not set up)Sugar_cookies_021

Keep a glass of warm water handy to rinse the brush out often, it will get clogged up with globs of icing.Sugar_cookies_022

After rinsing, make sure you dab off all excess water before dipping into the paint again.Sugar_cookies_025

You can also paint direcly onto the cookie, without icing, for  a different look.Sugar_cookies_026

I start with the lightest colors first, and add darker ones as I go.  Sugar_cookies_027

When you are finished painting, colored sugar lightly sprinkled onto
the cookie is a pretty touch, a little like adding the glitter to a
collage project!Sugar_cookies_043

I didn't have a butterfly cookie cutter, so I free handed the shape
with a knife and cut it out of the dough. I suggest using a cookie
cutter instead!!!!Sugar_cookies_041

I like to store my painted

cookies under a glass cake dome, but
before I do, I let them air dry for a couple of hours at least so they
don't stick together.Sugar_cookies_032

Time for a winner!  This bundle of vintage trims, wrapped up in an embroidered doily, and topped with a millinery rose goes to:

SUZY

Which is really cool, because she is a sewer! I'm sure she'll whip up something wonderful with the old lace.

Notice the sweet little white tree I tied onto the ribbon? I just love those. I bleached, dyed, and glittered a bunch of them to sell, but have kept them all to tie onto packages this holiday.

Heavenlypaper 024

Wrapping up packages in special ways probably has become my main hobby now.  I have such fun digging through my goodies to make the things I send out look nice.

This tag goes to a friend, and it was made with little scraps of my Heavenly Papers.

Heavenlypaper 026

Personally, I prefer using bits and pieces of old papers instead of cutting into a big piece if I am doing a small project. Plus, its all so dear to me that I can't waste an inch of prettiness!!!

So, I wrapped up the trimmings from my wallpaper cutting this week and listed 3 bags full in the boutique.

I HOPE, that I will have time to list more larger pieces, man those went fast!! Thanks again, its good to see that my obsession is shared by so many of you. After Miss Frenchie's I'll try to wrap some more up for the shop, I appreciate all your inquiries.

Heavenlypaper 028

Packing is going slow for Miss Frenchie's. I might be doing a last minute crunch to be ready.  Not my style at all!! I like to be ready a week early so I can relax. But this time, life got in the way.

We had a couple of bonus Sugarwings days (always worth postponing work for!)and Saturday the weather was so beautiful, Sugarwings, my husband, and I just had to clean out the garage and pick up the garden a bit. We had a big bonfire going as I ruthlessly pitched stuff, burning lots of useless crap. What a good feeling, to have an uncluttered garage.

But not such a good feeling today. I only have half a tub ready to take!

Heavenlypaper

Believe it or not, I am ready for the new giveaway and it is only the first day of the month. Usually I have to ponder on the piles I have accumulated to see what I want to put up for the drawing.  But this time, a friend offered her newest book.

Its written by a local Kansas City gal,

Amy Barickman

who runs Indygo Junction and Vintage Workshop, and is full of great ideas and style. Just another reason why I'm proud to be in the KC area!  Its great to have such talented women around- Amy, Carol, and Debbie, are just a few of the locals whose sense of vintage style I admire.

Amy is also generously giving the winner a $25 gift certificate for vintage image downloads!!  Yahoo!

Since the book was about hankies (which I just adore, and hoarde collect) I found a couple that matched the picture on the cover to include, in case you wanted to make that pattern with them.  You can also purchase downloads of vintage hankie prints here:

(or use your winning $25 gift certificate!)

If you don't win you can buy a copy of the book here: http://www.indygojunctioninc.com/store/

All comments, all month count.

While I've been busy gathering goods up for Miss Frenchie's sale this weekend, I've taken a break to package up some of that great wallpaper I told you about.

Heavenlypaper1

I  just loved playing with all the pretty papers and making packages for you to use!  I package them in a few different ways, one is all coordinated, another is a varied selection.  Also, I try to make varied sizes, some jam packed and others a bit smaller, to fit all budgets.

You can find them in my Boutique, and it looks like they are already selling before I've even had a chance to tell you about them! Thanks, guys, its good to see that I'm not alone in my wallpaper love!

Copy (2) of rings 018

Also, just wanted to let you know that there are only a few Crystal Crown Rings left.  I'd better slip in and get one for myself before they are all gone!

Il_430xN.105989982

The trees are re-stocked in my Etsy shop too.  Why do I have the trees in a different shop? Laziness. I sold them there last year, so now, I just have to renew the old listing, not take all new photos and relist.  Simple and quick.

Well, the bleaching, dying, gluing, glittering, packaging part isn't quick, but the listing is, and I'll take any little bit of help I can get!

Nov28 020

Sugarwing's Daddy helped me cut wallpaper.  He's the sensitive, artist type and is always happy to help in the studio when I need him.   I was freaking out about my major budget blow out on all the paper I'd bought and how little time I had to get it packaged, with Miss Frenchie's sale looming.  So, he jumped in and started chopping.

Heavenlypaper 023

We sliced two sizes, 8 x 10 and 11 x 14. But, I don't have the clear envelopes to fit the larger sizes!! Someday, I'll have a chance to sit at the computer and look up glycine sleeves and get some ordered, then will list the bigger pieces. Sorry!   They are sitting here waiting for me to make time.

Frenchiesetup 012-1

Twinkle is wondering when I'll have time to spend with her too.  As excited as I am to be going to Miss Frenchie's and as lucky as I am to be included on such a FANTASTIC, premier sale, I'm getting tired!  I'm ready to kick back with Christmas music on the stereo, a frosty glass of egg nog in my hand, and the Christmas tree twinkling in the dark.  Don't you love evenings by the light of a Christmas tree? Especially if there is a fire lit.

And we always have a fire lit, we heat our house mostly with wood.  Now, I just need the tree and the time to set it up and enjoy it!

Frenchiesetup 001-2
This is why I am slightly exhausted.  I'm setting up my "trial run" for Miss Frenchie's, and getting it planned, tagged and packed.

Frenchiesetup 003-1
I'll leave you with some scenes of my table. I'm heading over to it to pack it up and get it ready to load in the big red pick up truck on Thursday.

Shameless hawking of wares, Artist Class Ala Carte, a mini Tutorial, and prizes!

Etsy Goodies, family, give away, holiday decor, how-to projects, I do tend to run on, don't I?, vintage paper/collage art
Thanksgiving 09 088

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday, with lots to be thankful for yesterday!

We had a smaller than usual group this year, and WAY too much food. I've already made turkey soup from leftovers for supper tonight.  While cleaning up the kitchen and putting away the food, I have a pot simmering on the stove that veggies, turkey, and broth go into.  I throw in a few handfuls of rice, and some seasonings and by the time I'm done with the kitchen clean up, the soup is ready to be cooled and put away for the next day.

Thanksgiving 09 089

Family brought side dishes, and we had the meal all under control on auto pilot, so while the guys watched football and played pool, some of us made paper doll dresses for our Christmas trees.  We kind of have a family tradition of doing projects together while the turkey roasts. I keep the day low keyed and simple, so we can all enjoy it and not feel pressured or rushed. The meal is all served buffet style right from the stove top, so when its time to eat, all we do is line up.  I can play with glitter and glue right up until its chow time!

Thanksgiving 09 097

This year, I had actual patterns ready for the guests to use, thanks to the tutorial I did for Mary's Artist Class.  I enjoyed seeing how the "class" went in person, and they seemed to like it.

Artist Class is still available to purchase as a group of 12 projects, with lots of extras (use my Karlascottage code to save $10) and now, Mary is also offering an ala carte menu to pick and chose a few classes here and there too.

Click HERE to order the paper doll tutorial that I did.

You will receive the dress patterns, the hand drawn doll that the dresses fit, directions, and ephemera to down load and print out to make your creations.  This class, on its own is $15.

I will be listing some more ephemera kits with extra patterns in my Boutique soon too.  Along with that gorgeous wallpaper that I am slowly, but surely getting cut!!

Thanksgiving 09

Here are some of the creations that family made yesterday with the patterns. Its great to see the range of styles that some simple patterns can become!

Thanksgiving 09 100

This is one of mine, made from that wallpaper that I'm so far behind on getting packaged to sell!   I've got a few rolls of it cut, but have about 10 more to get through. Thanks for your patience.  I'd planned on doing it today, but when Sugarwings asked me to take her to a movie, how could I say no?  Wallpaper will just have to wait, fairy grand babies take precedence!

Thanksgiving 09 081

If you'd like to make your paper doll dresses into ornaments to hang from the tree, here are some simple steps to do that.

First, punch holes in the shoulders.

Thanksgiving 09 087

Next, select your ribbon.

Thanksgiving 09 084

For holiday sparkle, I chose this vintage tinsel that was a gift from Beth.

Cut about 7-8"

Thanksgiving 09 082

Thread the ribbon through the holes from the front (although, you can tell from the floral dress I made, that I put the knots in the front, that is OK too)

Thanksgiving 09 083

Tie knots on both ends, then trim off any danglies.

To Christmassy-up a couple of these dresses, I added some glitter.  Simply brush your finished dress lightly, with white glue, and sprinkle on glitter, then tap off.  I used the vintage crystal "Diamond Dust" because it has such a pretty shine. Make sure you don't use something metallic or heavy that covers up your work completely! You want to use a transparent glitter and apply in a fine sheen, not thick or gloppy.

The dresses I've shown are available in my Etsy shop for $6 each, if you are interested.

And of course, everyone who leaves a comment anytime this month is entered into the

November Giveaway.

While up at Silver Bella, there was a discussion among some friends about giveaways. A lot of people don't care for them and think there are too many.  I know I have a lot, and yes, some of it is just to bribe you guys to leave comments, but that isn't the only reason I do it.

For one thing, I have so MUCH. And I like to share.  I find good deals and I'm able to giveaway pretty things without hurting my pocketbook.

And also, to quote Kurt to Finn on Glee, "I honestly love you". My blog, and blogfriends that I've met through it mean a lot to me.  There are billions and billions of blogs out there for you to visit and I just want to say thanks for you to take the time out to come and see me, and bother to leave a comment.

So, yes, there will be more giveaways here.  And lots of them.  Its appropriate to say at Thanksgiving time that I have a lot to be thankful for.  So, I just wanted to let you know that!

Being Thankful

Thanksgiving 09 049

Today, Sugarwings and I spent a few hours in the kitchen, working on getting goodies made up to fill the treat cabinet for our guests.

We made 2 pumpkin pies, a pumpkin cheesecake, brownies, pecan cheesecake, fudge, and pralines.

Thanksgiving 09 001

This recipe, torn from a 1933 magazine has been on my desk taunting me for weeks.  I don't typically make food from recipes, I make up my own, but this, well, this one looked special. Plus, I loved the idea of recreating something from 70 some years ago.

Also, my favorite candy store in the world, Savannah Sweets in St. Augustine, FL has pralines that look just like these and I adore those yummy, rich, pecan treats!

Not owning a candy thermometer didn't stop me.  I like doing the "soft ball" test.  I kept a glass of ice water by the stove to check for the right temp. But honestly, if you've ever made fudge from scratch, this is similar and you can about tell by looking at the bubbling goo to see if it is ready to remove from the stove or not.

Thanksgiving 09 020

One thing I changed from the original recipe was to add Belguin chocolate chips.

Thanksgiving 09 022

Another change was to use this silicon pan instead of buttered aluminum foil or wax paper.  I got this one at Target for $9 and use it like crazy. Nothing sticks, and all the desserts or muffins look so pretty when they come out.

Thanksgiving 09 027

See?  Nice little squares.  I dropped the brown sugar mixture over the chocolate chips and pecans that were waiting in the sprayed pan, and pushed it all down into the squares.  The recipe said it only made 9 servings, but using mine ended up filling two of these pans. I used more nuts, broken up instead of 3 big ones per piece of candy.

And I'm glad I added the chocolate.  Wow, these are good!!!

Thanksgiving 09 017

I hope you all have a sweet holiday, with plenty to be thankful for.

I know what I am thankful for.  I'm extremely lucky that my life has turned out the way it is, with healthy, happy sons, a husband who makes me laugh, and Sugarwings to snuggle with.

Life wasn't always this good, we've seen some major bad times.

I've broken my back and didn't know if I'd ever over come chronic pain. I've lost both parents in recent years, and  I thought I'd lost my son to addiction. My husband and I have lost jobs, beloved dogs, and savings accounts, but have never lost each other.

Yep, I'm VERY grateful.

Thanksgiving 09 038

Plus, I got my studio clean and am ready for guests!!!

I'm really thankful that is behind me.  I'll leave you with a few pictures of the cleanup and of the dinner table.  I used white bottle brush trees down the center of the table along with all the other things I am taking to sell at Miss Frenchie's next week.  After the holiday, I'll just stick price tags on it all, pack it up and I'm ready to go.
