Croquet? Okay!

Uncategorized

799FE812-486E-4BDD-A424-970AE0561942

When we were invited to a croquet party, I was dubious about joining in.  I’m not sporty, have zero depth perception, can’t aim, and hate keeping score.

Oh my, I do not sound fun at all, do I?

CF4B86A4-D016-41CF-AD54-222F9EE07B3A

Games are not my thing.

DFDF8ED6-5ADA-4A3F-B944-9D9BF6449992

But when “proper croquet attire” was mentioned, I was in.  I’d watched Bridgerton, and I was ready to put on my best whites and grab my parasol to go be a spectator and have some good food, good friends and a glass of wine.

7CDF83D3-C05B-48DD-8F48-DDC25BA7710A

Before I knew it, I was sucked in, and realized that whacking that ball was more exciting than I thought it would be.  Next thing I knew, I was vying for third place to move on to the championship round.

02909ACD-B1A9-4F02-9DF1-9F41A99D67AA

Well, I came in 4th, but my husband let me be his partner and I got to be in the final round with him.

We didn’t win, the title went to our buddy, Jim.

But I did receive two prizes! One for best dressed and for coming in second in the final round.9D668B4E-05A5-40F3-8AC1-1C1C2EA2169D

I think what pushed me over the edge to win for the costume were these magnificent, beaded tenny boppers.  I’ve had them for at least 30 years, and only bring them out for very special occasions.

The dress was pretty cool too.  I’d bought it to wear to Silverbella (I miss those so much!).  That was fifteen years ago, and when I put it on this time, I realized it didn’t fit quite the same.

My poor bust was halfway down below the bodice, so the top of the gown wasn’t filled out right.

Oh well.

As I age, I don’t care too much about where my boobs are or how things fit.  Which is good, because I have a feeling it just goes downhill from here.  Literally.  My chest will not be going back up to fill out any more bodices, this is as good as it gets.

EDB07ACC-3665-4EB7-9127-BC0D2D1732B4

And my sports acuity won’t be improving either.  Enjoying what I can, whenever I can is what makes each day worth getting up for.  I’m glad I didn’t put the pretty dress away because it made me look droopy.  I’m glad I didn’t opt out of playing the game because I’m not good at hitting a ball.

Fun times are a gift that we have to open to enjoy.  Or at least be open to.

Playing with dolls

fairies

798F46A9-1030-45BD-8091-4172D5546EEE
Luckily, my fairies do okay at Juju sales.  Not GREAT, but enough that I can indulge myself in making more.  I do love crafting a sweet, winged sprite from a dilapidated doll no one wants. Friends have been passing along dollies that their customers haven’t picked up, so that I can play with feathers and lace to recreate the dolls into my winged girls.

This babe in blue has an ocean theme and is decked out in vintage seashell flower jewelry.

EE9AF2DF-362B-4AC8-9D22-5ED495D38C81

I use lots of different kinds of dolls, this pink petal girl was a storybook doll with open and closing eyes. But now, she has a different story.
8DE57652-894A-4FCE-B34C-F318B9625E85
This one is porcelain, and is draped in French net lace.  Redoing her mostly meant cutting away her costume and adding lace, feathers, and flowers.  She was basically in good shape.  Some are not and often need major repairs.

I collect odds and ends of legs and arms too, in case I come across a doll missing pieces.  I don’t try to be a doll doctor and put them back together as they were.  I just use a lot of glue to hold them in place.  Same with the clothing.  I’m not a seamstress, these dresses are fabricated with adhesive.

My very, very favorites are Nancy Anns. I love everything about these and try to save as much of their original look as I can.  This one even still had good hair.  It’s rare that I get to salvage the hairstyle.  Sometimes I can remake the locks by gluing the hair and adding flowers to cover bald spots.  Most often, I just pull it off and glue goats hair or dyed wool fluff over the heads.

This lilac dragonfly fairy has wool roving for hair.

3178ED12-F4FB-4A02-85E3-5C411037C912

This golden fairy’s hair is made from the goat hair “curly locks”.  Her wings are feathers painted gold and she has gold glitter polka dots on her gown.  I like to add vintage millinery to the back of each to embellish the wings.

Even if I use similar materials, no two turn out the same.  Each has her own, sweet personality.  And love them all.

Once again, that was wine in the teacups

celebrations, cottage, flowers, Food and Drink, friends, We're having a party

863DA369-789A-434B-A604-9BB8C44CF82E
To celebrate Angie and Beth’s birthdays, we made plans for a day out, and I offered to make brunch first. But then, Angie picked up an estate sale to do, and between that and all of her other obligations, her time off for a whole day disappeared.  Our date switched to lunch and I decided to serve it in the gazebo to make it special.

E4C61079-6F55-418F-A3FD-BDE57394EF00

Hmm, not the best picture of us, but you get the idea.

We had wine in our teacups, and drank it with our pinky fingers crooked while wearing floral garden hats and speaking in a British accent, of course.

EB267837-7B13-4C43-B67A-6DBA305DFFC1

I draped a little, round table in layers of clothes, and brought out the floral china.

The weather cooperated with perfection, but just in case, I added a fan and extra sun umbrellas to the space.

24F00CCD-7BAF-44F4-B40F-437290702705

Teapots were filled with $1 flower bundles (our local Kroger always marks them down after the weekend) and I made place cards with “Angela” and “Elizabeth”  instead of Angie and Beth to be extra fancy.

But “Karla” doesn’t come with a fancy option.

So I used the name my dad, Hubert, had written on my original birth certificate.

  “Huberta”

As in Huberta Josephine Downey.

Yep, that was my name.  My mom changed it to Karla Jo.  Not nearly as much to roll off the tongue.   I think I could’ve grown up as a Bertie, or Birdy? Instead I was always Karkie Jo.

The silk flower umbrellas from my April Showers Bring May Flowers theme at Good Juju got another go round as garden party decor.  I’ve left them up outside a while, they somewhat survived a 24 hour deluge.  I’m not sure how many more uses I’ll get out of them, but I have enjoyed every bit of our time together so far.

We had dipped strawberries and lavender honey  dark chocolate for dessert.

I fixed honey butter toasted croissants, individual quiches, and fruit salad.
Even though it was their birthdays, Angie brought sparkling soda and Beth brought a salad.

Seashell Fairies and a sand portrait

sea shell fairies

4C67549B-DF04-4ED0-B6C0-94F8CCB6CC46
Previously when I have gone to Indian Shores, I hadn’t been too impressed with shelling opportunities.  I’d had to scramble to find a handful, and my sissies had even had to drive me to other beaches to collect a few.

This visit was different.  It wasn’t exactly the shell capitol of the world, but I also had no trouble gathering up a few to make fairies.

2F7C8CFE-1A33-4925-B021-0D0E3A6B61B0

Like everything else on this last minute, quick getaway, everything was Just Right.  I saw lots of dolphins from the balcony, had so much beach time in ideal water conditions, even found the perfect beach umbrella and chair left in the condo closet.

Did I mention that I swam within a few feet of a manatee?

And that my headaches were better?

It was just the best time with sisters, I was so glad that I went.

7667E8E9-E893-400E-96AE-46287B51F0F9

Before leaving for the airport on Saturday, I went for one last walk and saw a pile of seaweed washed up on the beach.  I used them to make a quick portrait in honor of Ryan.  If I’d had longer, I think I’d have looked for better shells for his eyes, but if I walked away, the seaweed blew off.  It was pretty windy, I had just moments to do this.

I can just hear Ryan if he’d seen this.  “That’s cool, mom” was the phrase he always used.  He loved watching me create and always appreciated it.

I miss having him over my shoulder while I do them.

A quick an unexpected getaway

family, Travel

339B27DC-8ABA-4659-B33F-691D9B354EE5

I really should’ve gotten more pictures, I was just so relaxed and carefree, I rarely had my camera out.

63B5A54E-52D2-4E07-A4A0-6D3BAEA54373

Plus, it was a very short trip.  And a very last minute trip.  My sissies had been planning for months, but I didn’t even think about joining in, I knew it wasn’t good timing for me.

C4DAE08D-25F3-4954-AFE0-3B8B4BD34961

Instead, I filled my yard with a flock of flamingos (from a friend) and wished Bobbie and Sissy well on their vacation.

5A9E9D88-541C-440A-86A5-872776196232

I was fine with not going on this trip, because I’ll be meeting up with them and their daughters in Sarasota next October.  I enjoyed listening to all of the planning and was excited for them to be headed to Indian Shores now, but I was fine about not being a part of this jaunt.

818216F1-EDB8-4BF4-9A87-640CC924E875

Then, I started to feel like I was just missing out too much.  Between six months of struggling with getting the Grandfairy’s grades up, with so much of my free time being Homework Police instead of getting to do the fun stuff the kiddo and I typically did together and with drawn out recovery time from my concussion, I was feeling like a shut in.

My husband and I had planned to take a quick trip in the camper with the dogs to see family in North Carolina, but my headaches, Grandfairy requirements, and work needed to get ready for Good Juju made me cancel.  (I still need to hang out in a dark room sometimes for Post Concussion Syndrome and a camper full of dogs doesn’t offer that kind of space)

Plus it’s prime garage sale season, the time of year I pick up a majority of my inventory for the year.

So Rich left most of the dogs with me and went without the camper, and took some extra time to see even more people we’d been missing.  The day before he was due back I was feeling pretty down, from so many headaches and even worse over the 3 year mark of Ryan’s death.  That period between Mother’s Day and May 24th is brutal.

363D6A5E-083F-4678-A230-F9421D1572A7

That’s when I decided that I needed a change.  Sophomore finals were over.  Rich would be back to watch dogs.  There aren’t good garage sales over Memorial Day.  My booth was set up.  The Florida condo had dark, quiet spaces if I needed one.  I had points on Southwest and my sisters had an empty room at the beach.

I was gone at 6am the next day.

And I was so glad that I went!  I think that a few days of zero stress, lots of sleep, and no work or responsibilities was just the ticket I needed to help break that cycle of headaches.

Not to mention the relaxation of  laughing with my sissies, splashing, watching dolphins, and eating seafood.

I didn’t even need the dark room while there.

Springtime work for Autumn pieces

holiday decor, redos

821EB7BF-F326-4A88-9A37-85CF53F82740
It might seem early, but if I don’t start on Halloween crafts now, and Christmas ones by mid summer, I won’t be ready.  Last year, I got a very late start, and was getting up at 5am to put in such long hours that I hardly had time to enjoy the holidays myself.

This year, I’ll be ahead of the game!

Here is the before picture of this wedding couple.  The first picture posted is the after, with them transformed into two ghost brides wearing vintage finery.

When I found this landscape, I knew it had to go behind my mosaic cottages.  Even though the display was finished.  I took it apart and redid it all, not just this shelf, but the whole cabinet.  I had to distribute some of the things that had been on this shelf to the other levels so the painting wouldn’t be completely blocked.

24E9BED6-2D00-4044-A55D-5E281C23E296

Because I tend to layer so much that I block a lot.  Like the mirror on the wall in this photo.

What mirror?  Well the one I hung in December that no one has ever seen because it has had so much in front of it.

AC7C9EFB-3BF1-4608-92DD-21FAF365CE69

Since I am a stacker, piler, and layer-er, I am careful to have most price tags prominently displayed.  People don’t have to risk causing an avalanche to get something down if it isn’t a price point they appreciate.

C8B26E14-1657-4256-9DD9-01B7E0B067A5

If I can do it, the tags are easy to find, but not right in your face.

1E1B0284-F248-4055-BC42-F309E1994191

Other times they are directly on the face.  Ha, get it?

Seriously, I try not to overcrowd, but it ends up that way anyhow.

Ceiling to floor.

F56CF6B3-50A8-4B21-9B2D-5B94837FB8CB

Speaking of ceilings, for summer, I have added butterflies to the entrance.  They didn’t have quite enough umph, so I also hung frames around them.

My jewelry area got a makeover too.

Did I mention that I like to layer things?  This is pretty full.

B00E0E75-5505-4576-A053-9F407B456BD0

By piling so much on the furniture, shoppers miss those pieces.  I’m trying to use larger tags on them to see if that helps.  I’ll have to make one for this cool chair.  I’ve had it in my breezeway for a year now, and really liked it, even though it doesn’t seem like my typical look, I thought it was cute there with a basket of rosemary on it.
B72B8875-E94C-4B90-8D60-AE7CA29D7923
Also not my style?  Red, white, and blue.

2F60F169-A43C-4E63-8B0E-A96829278905

Still, I found so many, many more things I really liked in those shades, that I once again, went overboard.

3224ED4B-FCB4-4E72-98BA-EBE987149B01

My plan was to do groupings in these tones and fill a small area.  Before I knew it, I had so many pretty  items that over filled a whole wall.
DE8439C1-069B-4419-A85A-285A6DD9E39E
Plus, I threw in bags of marbles and of buttons to coordinate and make more splashes of color.

43F59E91-DA30-4B06-9E7C-A1736887CEE7
To be honest?  I prefer neutrals with floral accents.  But- ya gotta know your crowd.  I think the shoppers there enjoy the mix.  And I really do have fun putting it all together, no matter what colors I use.

And I ended up loving the final look.  Maybe I am a red, white, and blue fan after all?

Patriotic and still Cottagey decor

vintage paper/collage art, wallpaper

Red, white, and blue are not typically my colors.  But this year, I wanted to play with them and use the tones with my own aesthetic.
C7B54051-8E7E-4246-A09B-7070C92C127F

Vintage wallpaper is one of my favorite things, so I whipped up a few flags from it.  The large one is on foam core, the smaller ones on vintage book covers.

B541FAB9-B3E3-43B5-818D-5967548B67C2

While I was at it, I used the scraps to make tags.

5E70114A-35D8-4EF4-85E4-8A59A909F841

With roses, birds, and wallpaper, this color scheme made me pretty happy.

085373D9-C32D-4F35-96EC-28FFF70208E2

Also, I’ve always wanted to make one of these ribbon flags.  I scoured my home and studio for red ribbon and lace, to find just enough to make this one.  I thought I’d make smaller ones with the scraps, but there wasn’t much left over.  Most of the trims are vintage, a couple of the reds are not.  And the blue tulle is cut from a cute skirt that Sugarwings wore as a little kid.

The hanger is not a part of it, that is behind the piece.  Sorry, should’ve hung it elsewhere for the photo.  The ribbons are tied to nails pounded into a branch.  I’m going to put a dot of glue on each knot to keep them in place.

This was such a fun project, I’d love to make another, but do not want to use brand new red ribbons.  I might dye some vintage lace and use that.  A soft, faded red would be nice, this a bit bright for me.

All of this stuff will be at Good Juju for First Fridays in June.  I’ll show you some pictures once I get it all set up.

Missing our boy

Ryan

9BC0E456-9695-40EE-8411-469DC98A246F
Today marks three years since Ryan’s death  and the last bloom is on the iris he planted for me.  The first bloom came on Mothers Day this year.

The rose he surprised me with on a Mother’s Day is starting to bloom now.

6C8043FD-7ACB-423F-8F4D-2AF56326B41F

And so is one gifted to us after he died.

These reminders mean so much more to me than a tombstone at a cemetery.  We have sunset maple at a nearby arboretum and an oak tree planted for him in our yard too.

The oak still looks like a short bush, it hasn’t grown at all in three years.  Rich wants to replace it, but it seems fitting to me.  Ryan was a late bloomer himself.

There was wine in the teacups

celebrations, cottage, Food and Drink, friends, We're having a party

E868C5F1-54F3-4D24-8B74-F0DD57C12B65
Last Tuesday evening, I hosted a Mother’s Day tea party.  A friend recently lost her MIL, then right before the holiday, her own mom passed unexpectedly.  As I planned a get together for her I realized that none of the guests’ moms were still alive.

C56BAD26-31C6-44C6-A9A4-AF2B234FA00C

I thought we should honor all of the lost mothers and asked for photos of the ladies.

Then I picked some flowers from my yard to tuck into tussie mussies.

The plan was to sit outside by the fire and order pizza.

CAC0D4DF-A9A3-430E-8FE9-8F1385FA1F92
But I wanted a real tea party style gathering, so I made food instead and set it out on the table with the pretty dishes.

1B07AF72-67EB-45F0-8194-6C849E46A98D

This tiered stand from Hobby Lobby, years ago (they still have them) always comes in handy.  On a daily basis, it holds fruit, but when company comes, the fruit goes in a bowl and this is used for serving food.

C9E32488-0B85-4CC1-A10C-02CEF1E6FBD0

Earlier this month, I found a metal lamp base on a flea market dollar table.  It made an ideal holder for a stack of salad plates.

My table is oak, and not the look I wanted for a spring, flowery party.  But it’s also huge, and I don’t have tablecloths to fit it.  So, I covered it in a painter’s drop cloth and layered these rosey placemats (50 cents from a garage sale this week) on top.

Focaccia bread isn’t exactly a tea party staple, but I baked it to look like a flower garden.

And how lucky were we to get a perfect spring evening? Just cool enough for a fire, but not so chilly that we’re had to be close to the fire for warmth.  It was more for atmosphere.

B02F6F29-4302-4DB9-9C19-1902E0C93A61

The table was a generous and exceptional hand me down from my sis, Terry.  And oh my.  It is a dragon mosaic made from genuine stones and can feature either a fire or umbrella in the center.

We just love it.  I call it my fire breathing dragon table.

And I love my friends.  I’m glad we had a night together to honor our moms and to sip wine from teacups.
I think I’ll make this a tradition.  You are never too old to miss your mommy.
