Step by Steps and a peek into the crazy mind of a serial redecorator

Etsy Goodies, fairies, how to's, how-to projects, I do tend to run on, don't I?, magazine pictures or articles, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art

Butterfly_baby_006 The slipcovers are done!  And in use, you can see them here under my little fairy grand baby.  Her dad has dislocated his elbow -ouch- and it looks like I will be seeing a lot of her this week.  He is in bad shape, and can’t use his arm, so he can’t pick up his baby.  I’ll be helping out till he is better.

We are hoping rest will do the trick, the poor guy has no health insurance and can’t afford time off work, or doctor bills.

Since I know I will be busy with the baby this week, I kicked it into over drive to finish the slipcovers and the wall behind the couch. Book_wall_002

I decided to use a mix of books for a varied look on the wall. First I removed all these cool illustrations to use for projects or to sell on Etsy for someone else to use.  Aren’t they beautiful???Book_wall_003

I have 2 French books in different sizes, and one slightly more aged looking plus a book about roses with black and white illustrations.

Book_wall_001 I was so pleased to see how easily the textured wallpaper came down.  Just a bit of peeling and patience and it was done.Book_wall_019

If you know me at all, you know that I don’t waste anything. The wallpaper I pulled down was cut up into craftable sizes and saved for future projects. Some of it was used already to wrap up some Etsy purchases tonight. It made really cute wrapping paper.Book_wall_004_2 Book_wall_013

I used all three books, with the pages turned upside down, sideways, all topsy turvey, with no real pattern or plan.

Wallpaper paste was rolled onto the wall and I added the pages to the glued wall, then rolled over the top again with glue.

The first part of the wall was dry by the time I finished the last part, so I started right away on the metallic glazes.Book_wall_014 Gold, bronze and umber glazes all went into the pan together.Book_wall_006

To apply, all three were used on the rag at the same time.Book_wall_007

It gets glopped on with the rag.Book_wall_008

When you first start to smear it around, you think, "oh no, what have I done???"Book_wall_009

But just a little blending and it starts to look good.Book_wall_012

I wish you could see the metallic sheen this has, it is a nice effect, but doesn’t show up well in the photos.

I like the aged colors of the paper and the golden sheen over the top kind of blends the papers all together.  The only color on the wall is this one page with the tiny word "Paris" in red.Book_wall_017

Ta da!  New slipcovers in one afternoon (it helps to not measure or be too picky, just go for it!) and a wall stripped of its old wallpaper and re-papered in vintage book pages in about 3-4 hours the next day.

Book_wall_016

One thing I really like about the slipcovers, besides the fact that they are washable and I have a houseful of dogs and a baby- is that I made the backs of the pillows all out of velvet.  When you lay on the couch, it will feel good to flip the pillows over to the soft side to get comfy.

Living_room_002

This is what I started with, and was ready for something more neutral.

(I found this brand new couch at a sale for $285!)New_couch_002_2

I’d used dark slipcovers for last winter, but it was way too much color for me and I got tired of it fast.Img061

And before that, we had this couch that I gave to my son when he got his own place. He stripped off all the pillows and the cover that I made for it and likes it plain tan velvet.

Img060

Here is another version of that sofa.

Both of these photos were used in magazine shoots and were taken by Bill Mathews and styled by Gloria Gale.Img062

And way way before that, we had this look. This was in Country Almanac, and was done by Bill and Gloria too.

And don’t ask me how long I will keep the new look I did tonight. Chances aren’t good that it will last!!!

Don’t forget about the giveaway, leave a comment to enter, I have two drawings this month!!

Somethings are genetic, some just aren’t

Ren_faire_sissy You know how I mention that I am crazy about Fairies?  Well, here is one I really love!  My Sissy has sprouted wings!! She makes a pretty fairy, doesn’t she?

And we have some similar tastes, don’t we?

Frame_up_2

More pretties- I have been working on making slipcovers all morning (I do not sew well, this has been rough). I wouldn’t have survived this ordeal with out a blogging break. Glad I took some browsing time, because I saw that my friend, Beth, over at Gathering Dust, is having a blow out of a sale!

I got this pack of collage and scrap booking goods for only $3.  Hurry over, I am seeing some sold signs going up.  I went back to get the rhinestone pack and they were gone already.

SignsThe remarkably warm and summer-like weather is continuing here in Kansas, lucky for me. I was face painting at the 150th anniversary of Eudora, KS yesterday and it was lovely outside.

Here are some of my clients.  They are sisters and are expecting a new baby in the family soon.  I think they need a redheaded sis to complete the set!Signs_013

If you hear underground rumblings, it is my mom turning over in her grave. My mother was a perfectionist at the sewing machine.  She could make anything and make it spectacular. She used to make slipcovers for me, and they were always so nice.

I DO NOT sew well. I hate to sew.  But I love redoing my living room and the cheapest way is garage sale fabric turned into slipcovers. (the old French book will be wallpaper, doesn’t it look good with the fabric?)

I have a good start on it, and am now heading to make the pillows before Sugarwings comes to stay all night and no work gets done at all. Just playing a few hundred games of Peek-a-boo and reading some stories. Signs_015

Here are hard learned tips for making slipcovers from a non-sewer:

1. Crying doesn’t help, if you get frustrated, take a break and go read blogs instead

2. It helps to pin things, even if you don’t think you need to

3. Stop and fit the piece to the cushion every once in a while. Don’t just keep going on, assuming it will fit.

4. Fabric stores do not sell bobbins ready to go, you have to spin your own, and clerks will look at you strangely when you ask where full bobbins are.Leandra_fairy

5. Magic fairies won’t come in and finish the work for you.  Although, if you don’t clean the craft table up well before you start laying out fabric, the glitter all over the material makes it look like you had help from some sprites.

I am at 191 entries, 200 is coming up soon! So, I will have a prize on the day I hit 200, I don’t know what the prize will be yet, but I’ll come up with something fun for you.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with French phrases for my signs. I appreciate it.

And don’t forget, you enter my October giveaway each time you leave a comment.  It will be a custom creation this month, just for the winner.  I’ll come up with a questionnaire for you to answer so I can custom fit the prize. Hopefully better than I custom fit slipcovers.

The Writing is on the Wall

Tags_064I finally found some charms that are exactly what I was looking for to paint on!  These come in a pack of 3 at Jo Ann’s and I only bought a few packs to try them out.

Now that I know how much I like painting them, I’ll need to get more! I’ve listed 3 on Etsy today, at $12 each, if you are interested.

They are dainty, about the size of a postage stamp. It takes a teeny brush to get the details in.Junker_jo_and_pci_005

Its funny that I was painting such tiny things last night, because I had just taken Sugarwings for a walk and we happened to walk by a school where I had done some mural work, the opposite of the teeny little pictures.

We popped in to look at the mural so I could take a photo. (Yes, these are my normal clothes, I am always covered in paint!)Junker_jo_and_pci_004

What is cool about this large wall, is that over the faux finish, I added words naming qualities to strive for as an inspiration wall for the students (this is in the study room).

Junker_jo_and_pci_008

In the flash of the camera, many of the words  show up, but they are painted in a way, that you have to move around to see them, they only show as the light hits them just right.  I used transparent, metallic paints and it is a really interesting effect.

I liked to think that this wall symbolized need to strive to attain goals, and that these traits represented by this text had to be earned, they weren’t that simple to grasp.

Plus, I thought it was a pretty way to do it! Junker_jo_and_pci_018

On the way home from my son’s house after dropping off the little Fairy Grand baby, I stopped at a garage sale.Junker_jo_and_pci_013

Junker Jo sets up a beautiful sale, and it is all great stuff at good prices.Signs_001

I bought a couple things.  This English pitcher was only $3 and so was the salvage piece. I plan on painting it, it will make a great sign.Signs_008

Today I did get a few signs painted for my holiday show.Signs_004

Although, I seemed to be having writers block on good phrases to use.  Maybe I’ve made so many signs over the years, that I am feeling repetitive.Signs_009

Any body know any French phrases that would make a pretty sign?Signs_003 Keep in mind I don’t speak French, and it wouldn’t be funny to trick me into writing dirty words on the signs, the Holiday Sale is for charity!!!

We are having unseasonably warm weather around here. So I took advantage of it by going out to the lake with Sugarwings and Sparkle today while I babysat.

The wind made the water a bit choppy, so we didn’t stay out on the boat long, but we had a great time with the wagon up by the Marina.   Sugarwings got to break in her new $1 garage sale life jacket, and wasn’t too happy about the bulkiness of it.Junker_jo_and_pci_001

I had some people inquiring about the desk in my newly rearrange office that I showed a few days ago.   It is buried in my Etsy listed inventory. but sure is a pretty piece, isn’t it?  It is the original blue that I got it in, but I did add a touch of white wash to make the roses show up more.

Tomorrow I am face painting at a fair in a nearby town that is celebrating its 150th anniversary.  Signs_012

I did  some practicing on Sugarwing’s cheek this afternoon. If this is an example of the work I’m going to be producing, I shouldn’t be charging for it!

Hopefully, I’ll have some less wiggly kids to paint up tomorrow. Or I am in trouble.

Well, the baby is gone for the day and I am exhausted. Grandmama needs a nap.

Can there be TOO Many Roses? and a Temporary Hobby comes to an end.

Wreaths_016 Do you ever do a project that you put some time into, but it was still a wasted effort?

I painted this floral on the back of a linoleum scrap to make a rug. I’ve done this many times, it is a great way to make a cheap rug that is durable. (I have a stone patterned one in my office from a post a few days ago)

For some reason, this linoleum curls up on the edges, and will not lay flat, no matter what I try to do to flatten it.  Guess I should have made sure it was going to be flat before I painted it, huh? Well there goes $10 in supplies and an hour of my time!Wreaths_004

On a happier note, look at my new frying pan!!!Wreaths_005

I got it for $1 at an estate sale last Saturday! It is a good, well made and well loved pan, and has a lot of use left in it- and it is PINK!!!

Wreaths_013

Carole sent little Sugarwings this book for her first birthday, and I promptly fell in love with Tasha Tudor.  How can I have gone almost 50 years without noticing her work before?Wreaths_015

I love her style and thought I would "adopt" it for a series of Christmas ornaments.

Generous Carole, is having back surgery tomorrow, please drop by to wish her well if you can. As a person with a bad back, I know how emotionally and physically draining that can be. I’ve had my share of back surgeries!Wreaths_031

I only got a couple more ornaments painted yesterday, but they are not Tasha Tudor inspired, just my regular roses.

I also used two of my hand painted rose medallions (available on Etsy) to make a folder from one of my favorite vintage wallpapers. I’ll stuff it with Cottage Collage Kit vintage goodness and have it offered on Etsy too.  (This is the same pattern as the ones that will be featured in Somerset Living – yippee- love that magazine!!)Wreaths_017

I purchased these unfinished wood frames at Hobby Lobby after the 4th of July for under 50 cents each. I thought they could be Shabby Chic Christmas style instead of Independence Day with a few changes.Wreaths_019

This one has a simple and sweet border of barely-there glitter and the roses are painted onto green sheet music, then coated with paper glaze, for a sheen.Wreaths_020

the second one got a gloriously gaudy border with a heavier application of glitter, and a small silver star with a vintage rose bit of jewelry added to it at the top.

These roses are painted onto gold and white old wallpaper, but I got carried away and the paper doesn’t even show.

Wreaths_001

Are you all rosed-out at this point? I did have quite the rose painting day, yesterday between running errands (20 minutes to wait for a prescription at Wal-Mart????).

My Sissy gave me this print as part of the Swap we did in August. See the little Dorkie in it at the girl’s feet??Wreaths_008

I decided to make the little girl in the picture into a fairy, by painting on some wings and antennas. (Although,if she wants to put her pretty bonnet back on now, the antenna might get in the way.)

To make the paint look like it belonged to the print, I used a crackle glaze over the whole picture after the paint dried, then when that dried well, I wiped a dark umber glaze into the cracks.Wreaths_023

I used old ribbon and a fairy charm to hang it.Wreaths_025_2

I covered the mat in the same vintage wallpaper I had happened to have laying on the craft table from making the folder (some decisions are best left to chance, I move quicker that way!) I used my stardust Gelly pen to outline the roses in the paper and give it some sparkle.

The inside edge of the mat is covered with seam binding ribbon and the  old pink velvet is glued down then old earring are glued over that. I tore a chunk of flowers and velvet off a lovley old hat and added that at the bottom for extra foof.

Can you see the bottom of the painted wreath it is hanging from? I painted that on my closet door and hang little pretties from it sometimes. Others, I just leave it as a plain grapevine wreath.

And speaking of grapevine wreaths- I have finished my "temporary hobby" of making wreaths.Wreaths_002 Wreaths_003_5

This is my 4th and final wreath. The rest of the 25 cent silk flowers will just go into vases.  I did enjoy doing these few wreaths, but decided it just isn’t for me.

I was just making wreaths to get them done and over with, life is too short to make things because you feel like you have to.

By the way, in case you don’t know, if you leave a comment you are entered into October’s Giveaway Drawing.

Also, I am at 190 posts! I’ll have a special drawing for #200 and giveaway a gift then too!

Making more space and making money stretch

antiques/junking, Chandeliers, fairies, flowers, give away, holiday decor, I do tend to run on, don't I?, magazine pictures or articles, paintings, vintage paper/collage art

Office_redo_007 I have been hearing that Romantic Country has been hard to find for a lot of people.  I’ve seen that with these Harris Publications before. They have great magazines and people love them, but it takes some searching to find them sometimes.

So, today, I am mailing a copy to my sweet and tiny little mother-in-law out in Utah and my genteel and gracious great aunt down in Florida (who is turning 100!!).   I made them each a book mark with their initials.  I used some pretty scrap booking paper and brass charms but didn’t delve into my stash of vintage wallpapers and old ribbons. I knew they would just think it was old stuff and would probably appreciate the new papers more.  Office_redo_001

I redid the little corner of my studio that I call my office this week.

The rug is a linoleum remnant I painted for a magazine article "how to" story a couple of years ago. I switched from a larger table to this petite one and now the rug shows more.  I’d almost forgotten it was there.  Office_redo_004

I use doors that are hinged together to make the partition that creates the space, and even though the doors have windows, the spot is dark.  So I repainted the big hutch from black to pale, icy blue, and added another chandelier.

The table lamp is from last weekend’s garage sailing, $2.50- with the shade!!Office_redo_005

Its hard for me to make an office a pretty spot, too many functional things, electronics, papers, BILLS, that I need to keep out.

Of course, the piles of Etsy stuff on the little blue desk doesn’t help the clutter, does it?Office_redo_010

I might have mentioned a couple (or a thousand) times that I like fairies.  I make my own from old dolls, or paint them, or transform vintage photographs into little fairy kids, but I also buy store bought ones.Office_redo_011

TJ Maxx has these sparkly babes in with their Christmas decor for $5 each. I added these warm colored ones to my fall centerpiece in the dining room.

The velvet rose is from a bundle of the quarter ones I got at a garage sale, I glued it and some moss into a creamer from another garage sale that was only 15 cents because it was chipped.  Office_redo_023

My house doesn’t usually have fall colors. but I wanted to do something to celebrate the season and still be true to my own palette and style.

Fresh flowers are always welcome here. These are from last MONDAY at my local grocery store’s $1.99 clearance bin.

A vintage table cloth with roses in autumn colors, that Beth was selling for $3, and just gave to me instead, a basket from garage sales last week for 50cents, some of the vines and flowers (with lots of sparkle to them) from garage sales for a quarter a stem,  and an 80% off after Christmas spray of glittered fruits from Hobby Lobby are part of the display.Office_redo_024

I also added a gold carnival glass dish that was my husband’s grandmother’s and filled it with china roses that I collect for mosaic projects. Oh, and a bag of white pumpkins for $2, and a beaded pumpkin for $1.  All of this, for what it normally costs to buy a flower arrangement!Office_redo_012

Even though the flowers from last week’s sale bin are still thriving, I bought a dozen roses for $1.99 yesterday.  Look at the deep reds and the wonderful striping of greens and yellows!! Office_redo_014

The grocery store had a pot of white hydrangeas for $1.99 too. I hope to plant it outside as soon as we get a good break in the weather.

But for now, the pot looks good on my studio porch with the fall display there.Office_redo_015

I might have saved a ton on flowers, but I went slightly overboard at TJMaxx on the fairies.Office_redo_016

I bought one in every color they had for the baby’s room.Office_redo_018

Even though I am decorating for the Christmas Parade of Homes, I don’t think these will come down after the holidays, they look like fairies that should live here year round to me.

Office_redo_022

One more bargain, before I go make things. I’d hate to only have 2 book marks and a rearranged room to be all I accomplish today.

My friend was having a yard sale and I bought this desk from her for $30. If I had bought it from a stranger, I would have offered $25, but very politely, I am never pushy or rude when I wheel and deal!

This attic room is in its beginning stages, you don’t want to see the rest of it yet.

Tags_040 And one more "one more thing" this is what I sent to Priscilla, who won the Sept. giveaway.Tags_043

The tag is one that I made by cutting up my Romantic Country party invitation.  I thought it looked fitting for her, as a Flea Market Queen.

I added her initial and a charm that I had made with old papers.Tags_044

The charm can be worn as a pendant if she’d like.

I hope she enjoys her throne.

Please leave a comment to enter the Oct. giveaway. Maybe I will keep it as the Sept. one was, custom fit to the winner?

A Royal September Giveaway Winner, and some winning combos

Etsy Goodies, give away, holiday decor, how to's, paintings, vintage paper/collage art

Oct_1_009 I now have a no- fail calender! Back in August, I thought the month was over at the 28th because of a screwy calender so, Beth gave me this perpetual one to keep me organized.

And beautiful words to live by. I kind of have this motto in my head any way, but not said so eloquently

Now I know what date it is and that is it the correct time to draw a name for my September giveaway.

The winner for Sept. is

*The Flea Market Queen* !!

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments, please keep them coming, and I will keep bribing you with presents for leaving them!

A new give away begins today.Oct_1_001

Sunday was a good day for me, and not just because it was the season premiere of Dexter on Showtime (have I mentioned that I am the biggest TV junkie EVER?)

I worked in the studio most of the day, combining two of my favorite mediums, collage and paint.Oct_1_003

I painted, blue birds and branches on this old wallpaper, then made a tag out of it with 2 other vintage wallpapers and some millinery flowersOct_1_004 .

This cool old earring was in my stash too, and seemed to fit the design of the wallpaper, same style of posies.Oct_1_013

Another combo project was this old tin box covered in 3  different vintage wallpapers, with its edges trimmed in old seam binding.Oct_1_012

I added hand drawn gold paint swirls, a flash of jewelry, some millinery leaves and a hand painted anaglypta wall paper medallion.Oct_1_014

I traced some details of the paper with glitter, then sprayed the whole piece with  clear poly to give it some durability.

Everything is glued down with "the Ultimate", so I know it will stay in place. That is a good glue.

Oct_1_007 I painted quite a few more medallions to list on Etsy.  they seem to sell well. I did rose, cupcakes, and tea cups filled with roses.Oct_1_008

The sugared frosting is German Glass Glitter from Heather.  She says she is out of the genuine silver glitter (used on the blue birds tag) but has more ordered. If I were you, I’d get on a waiting list for it, it is that good to work with. I think one thing I like about it, is that it goes where you put it, not everywhere like glitter.  It also has a unique look and sheen to it. Oct_1_015

I painted a few Christmas ornaments. Oct_1 These are mini ones, that I will sell as pairs, I think.Oct_1_017

I used the German Glass Glitter on them too. I DID NOT want to get hooked on that stuff, but it is really a pretty addition to a painting or collage.

I just worry about the dangers, I don’t want to be inhaling it, or getting it in my eyes.  I don’t keep a tidy desk and I think you need to be careful when working with this glass.Oct_1_016

Snowmen in October?  I am getting ahead with my Christmas crafts, but I do need to get them done ahead of time. Oct_1_018

I’ve been making wreaths this weekend too.  I am working my way through the giant stash of 25 cent (brand new) garage sale flowers.

This is a new thing for me. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Time for me to go pick up Sugarwings to babysit and cuddle for the day. I’d hoped to stop at the gym on the way, but am running out of time. If I get fat, it is your fault.  I am sitting in front of this computer way to much.

Beth, Birdies, Bertie, and a bit of weirdness

Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), Etsy Goodies, how to's, I do tend to run on, don't I?, I've been tagged, paintings, vintage paper/collage art

Pink_convertabel_001 Yesterday was a Sugarwings Day.  She is still feeling cuddly and quiet from her flu bug, so she wanted just to be held or to be pushed in her new ($3 from a garage sale) car.

Pink_convertabel_004 While she was napping, I decided to surprise her by making her new car  a bit more fitting for someone as special as she is.

I primed it, spray painted it pink, then dumped two vials of glitter all over the wet paint and covered that with a spray of clear coat.

I wish the glitter showed in the photo, because it really shines in the sun.  Sugarwings might need some sunglasses when she rides in her pink convertible.

By the way, this is what I am using as a stroller. We go for long walks up and down the sidewalks and to the park in it.  So much more interesting than most strollers, and the handles come off so I can put it in my car if we go somewhere.Beth_sept_007

Today was a Beth day.  I went to her house and we crafted the afternoon away. Why is it so much more fun to dig through someone else’s bags and boxes of supplies than your own?

We both had new goods to work with, she’d gotten a tin full of broken jewelry at an estate sale and I had a stack of some of the prettiest paper ever from Heather.  She and I did a mini swap of vintage wall papers.Beth_sept_009

This blue rose paper is one from Heather and the rhinestone posy shaped button is from Beth’s tin of sparkly bits and pieces.Beth_sept_010

Beth also had a drawer full of different wooden shapes, and she shared this birdie with me.  And yep, the eye is from her stash of sparklies too. Plus- she gave me a baggie full of them to take home!

Beth_sept_011

Beth had a page of Victorian bird pictures she had reduced and copied, so I was full speed into the bird theme today. I also was trying out her "Stickles" and decided that it was a product I won’t be able to do with out.Beth_sept_013

I used the burgundy Stickles ( a brand of glitter glue that has a very fine glitter in it, comes in many colors, and flows easliy from the bottle) to outline some of the flowers in the old wallpaper (from Heather) and the oval cut out of the bird (from Beth).

I also drew extra vines, leaves, and swirls with Gelly Roll Stardust pens.  Another product that will always be on my desk!

The Stardust pens are what I used to outline flowers and leaves, then smudge it slightly for a subtle glittery look. (A trick I learned from Sissy)Beth_sept_007_2

Another new favorite is this genuine sliver glitter from Heather.  She sells it in her shop and you HAVE to try it. Especially if you use it with yet ANOTHER  new favorite of mine- a ball point pen that has glue instead of ink! I’d seen glue pens before, but these (from Michaels) have such a fine line and great control of where the glue goes, I just am crazy about them.

So do you have your shopping list of must haves for collage and scrap booking??

1. Stardust Gelly Roll pens (clear is the BEST)

2. Stickles

3. Ball point pen with glue instead of ink

4. Genuine silver dust glitter from Heather at Pretty Petals

These are my new "Can’t do with out ’ems" when I need to make something sparkle. And I always need to make stuff sparkle!

Beth_sept_002 Here is what Beth made today.  We might have gotten more done if we weren’t laughing so hard all day. For some reason, every sentence seemed to strike a funny bone.

Not a bad way to spend a day, laughing and gluing glitter on vintage wallpaper. Oh- and going out to lunch at Pei-Wei (a chain owned by PF Chang and just as good but half the price!)

Beth_sept_004

Here is more of what Beth made today, she isn’t quite done with them, but I took the picture anyway, they look good to me.

Also, I have been tagged by Jennifer (Queen of the Ravens) to list 7 weird things about myself.  Well, I’ve played this game before, twice, but I think I have plenty of weird to spare. Here are a couple at least.

1- This is embarrassing but true, and I did go back to finish later and jeez, I don’t know why I’d even tell anyone this- but I am a high school drop out.  I’m not stupid, I was an A student, I wasn’t a loser or a druggie or anything like that, it was just family difficulties and I was a tad bit homeless at the time.

2- I am a serial renovator. I can’t stop.  When we bought this old farmhouse, it was 800 sq feet. Img055  It is now almost 5,000.  Front_of_the_house_007 We just add and add and add.

3- I am a serial painter too.  My living room gets repainted at least twice a year.  Maybe more.  Maybe twice a week if I feel like I need to. When I had an antique booth, I’d paint it every couple of months. Other rooms last longer in their colors, the living room seems to be my main target.

4- I sing and make up rhymes all day long and am completely tone deaf, but I don’t let that stop me.  Sugarwings and the dorkies think it is pretty cool but the rest of the world finds me irritating.Berta_and_the_fairies_001

5- I keep a file of co-incidences. Such as two days after this puppy, Bertie, died, I made a tie dye tee shirt that was supposed to be a butterfly, but it turned out to look like her portraitBertas_ghost_matt_nicole_and_lee_le.

Anytime something odd or cute or coincidental happens, I make a note of it.  I call it my Co-Inky Dinks  and Odd Occurances file.

Yorkie_sky Like this picture of the sky over my cottage the day Sugarwings was born- this cloud is shaped like Sparkle, my dorky!!!

5- I have developed an addiction to vintage wallpaper.Wallpaper_packs_001

A serious, dangerous addiction that can’t be stopped.

6- I once had a mural job that paid me $2,000 in one day.  I paint fast, and usually try to make the job last longer so the person who hired me doesn’t feel like he got a bad deal.  But sometimes, I can’t help myself, I zip through the work so fast, I get done too early.  I’ve painted a 20′ x 60′ mural in 2 days, thats probably my speed record.  Img058

Here is are a couple photos of part of it, its a big ‘un.

7- I once broke my back. I fell off (was not thrown, that would be a better story) a pony –not a horse –  a pony we bought from a church camp. A kid’s pony.  I just was careless, slid off (it wasn’t very far to the ground either) and landed wrong. I broke 2 vertebrae and was in bad shape for years.  Lots of surgeries, etc.  I do exercises and keep limber or the arthritis in my back will cripple me up again.

8- bonus weird item- I don’t embarrass! (and I don’t know when to shut up)  You can tell by the fact that I wrote all of this!!!!

I will do the drawing for September’s prize Sunday night.  Thanks everyone for leaving comments, I appreciate it.  Also, I am taking suggestions for October’s prize.

Love_my_bath_019_2 This week has been a lovely party week, with sharing our homes on Tuesday, then the creative and glorious ball on Wednesday.

But today, caring bloggers are getting together to support Amy from 4 Sisters in  a Cottage and her brave struggles with breast cancer.. If you are interested in saying a kind word of encouragement to Amy, go over  Mary to find out more.

Love_my_bath_004_2 I thought I’d show a few more pictures of what I LOVE about my home.

When Sugarwing’s Dad moved out on his own, we ripped out his bedroom, used half of it as a large master closet/laundry room and the other half as a master bath.

A private laundry room in your bedroom closet is a great idea for an empty nester couple.  We filled the room with shelves and baskets, so  that the clothes went straight from the dryer to the shelf , no baskets- no hauling- so simple.

Then, of course, we had the kids move back in. And out, and then in again.  And a niece stayed with us for 8 months.  Our laundry room and the bedroom leading to it, became grand central station!Love_my_bath_006

But it works out, and I still LOVE that we remodeled and added this area.  I’m not showing you a picture of my closet, because it hasn’t been tidy since the day it was built.  But hey, its a closet! I shut the door and don’t care.

These cabinets used to be plain, and are meant to be for guns.

I added trim (me and my saw and nail gun!) to make them look built in and we actually designed the size of the room to fit them.  We were a couple of inches off- you can see to the right side. Oh well, with the walls dark, it seems OK.Love_my_bath_010_2

I cut these pieces to fit around the door too.   They are from Home Depot and are made of a Styrofoam, and can easily be cut by an amateur like me.  They sell all sorts of trim pieces to mix and match and use to foof up your home. I’d say I spent about $100 on what I used for this door.

Love_my_bath_009

I found the rose tile at a carpet and tile warehouse clearance center. It still wasn’t dirt cheap ($190), but it adds so much to the room. By using an accent tile around the tub, I could go with a generic tile on the floor. It was from the same clearance center for 99 cents a tile.

The sconce is from an auction and was $15.

I’m thinking about painting the sink cabinet. I don’t have much natural wood in my house and even though it works well here, my paint brush fingers are getting itchy every time I walk by it.Love_my_bath_008

To make a round tub fit into the rectangular box it needed to go into, I came up with this mosaic. There were two of these little square tiles left and the person at the store just gave them to me.  One is a rose, the other is a bundle of wheat (for Kansas!).

I used the decorative tiles on the front two corners of the tub, the back is a simple mosaic of the small pieces of travertine that are used as background for the decorative tile mosaic.Love_my_bath_012

This iron table is from a garage sale for $22. I loved it because it has a shelf to put books and magazines on while I soak in the tub.Love_my_bath_018

Three colors of white and tan were used to paint the cabinets and give them an aged look.  I added these wooden embellishments and tied keys on the handles with sheer ribbon.

The chair was free.  No one bought it at a sale and it was about to be thrown out!  The fabric is frayed on the top, but I don’t care one bit.  The fabric underneath seems every bit as pretty, but I love the cabbage roses so much, I won’t let myself be tempted to pull it off and see.Love_my_bath_016

I lined the back of the shelves with sheet music.

And yes, I know, I spelled cotten wrong on the jar!

Love_my_bath_021

I made my Grandma Downey’s old floor lamp into a towel/robe hook, since there was no convenient spot for a towel bar.Love_my_bath_013

I tried to use pretty containers for the practical things needed to be stored in the room.

Well, I’m off to get Sugarwings for the day! This makes the 4th day I have baby sat her this week, if you are wondering why I have no "new" projects to show you.  Did I mention she has had a flu bug all week? Poor baby. She has needed lots of cuddles.

Don’t forget to enter the drawing (details on the last posting)

Waste not want not, and some shameless self promotion and begging, with a bribe thrown in

Etsy Goodies, give away, how to's, magazine pictures or articles, paintings, vintage paper/collage art, We're having a party

Photo_albums_008 The after party let down hasn’t hit me yet, I am still enjoying all the after party glow!

Maybe since there are no dishes wash or cans to gather up or floors to mop, I won’t experience the crash that usually happens to me after everyone is gone home after a fun little bash!

Do you recognize anything here on these tags?

Photo_albums_010 I simply can’t let anything go to waste!

I cut up my hand painted party invitation and made it into tags with some of my wallpaper stash.

(PS- thanks to all of you who are buying up my Etsy wallpaper Cottage Collage Kits, I know you will LOVE working with these papers!!!)Photo_albums_011

I was in an aqua mood, but I did use  pink velvet for a couple of the ties. Photo_albums_012

These papers are quite an addiction for me, I found such great colors, the pinks are faded out to just the perfect shade.

I really should be painting, I have a big holiday sale coming up and I don’t even know if my typical crowd cares about wallpaper or tags, or paper doll dresses- they come to my sales expecting jewelry, hand painted things and lots of vintage pretties.Photo_albums_013

I could end up with a room full of paper goods and puzzled customers who wonder why they came!Photo_albums_015

I tend to get carried away with new ideas. Like- why did I buy a ton of these albums (with great hand made paper pages inside!!) to doo dad up like this, BEFORE doing one or two to see if anyone would even want one??

Photo_albums_016

I just love them though, and will get  alot of joy from covering them in wallpapers and old millinery flowers, jewels, tags, trims, and all the fun goodies I have to play with in my studio!Photo_albums_018

  • 1-I glued down the full page of wall paper

2-I cut a medallion out of an old page with scalloped scissors

3- drew on the medallion with black gel pen and gold paint pen

4-added a smaller oval of rose themed wallpaper

5-rimmed the oval with gold glitter glue

6-rubbed a crackle glaze over the roses

7-garnished it all off with ribbon, a tiny posy and some vintage rhinestones and tied on a tag with one of my cut up hand painted roses from the invitation on it

The back is plain wallpaper, and the inside will get decked out too, I think I’ll make it into a book that anyone can simply add their own photos to.

How can I not keep playing with this old wallpaper??? It is too beautiful and fun to work with for me to stop even though I am about up to my neck in paper dolls, tags, covered boxes, albums, etc. I am nothing, if not prolific!Photo_albums_020

My drawing winners yesterday were Paula Kay and Cindy. Now, what are the odds that there are TWO Paulas?? One is Paula K.!

I am sending Paula #2 these cards I made up for her last night. She ends her emails with a cute quote, something about a hand made card is a hug with a fold in it.  So, I thought, maybe this girl likes hand made cards!!

Here are a couple of folded up hugs coming her way today. Sorry about the mix up, Paula Kay and Paula K.! Ghost_muffins

Paula #1 gets this small painting and a magazine.

I think I might have some new readers from this party and wanted to let you know that I have a giveaway once a month, plus some extra goodies here and there too.

All you do is leave a comment and you are entered (every time).  This month’s prize is the same as last month, a Cottage Collage Kit or a piece of art I have made from one of the kits.Photo_albums_001

My new friend, Cindy was the other winner for the magazine drawing from the party.  I made a tag for her with some of the roses from the invitation and her name on water color paper I had added a pink wash to. (and my vintage wallpaper of course!!)

She asked me to sign the magazine and that just felt weird to me.  People don’t ask me to sign things?!?!  I added part of the party invitation to the page my pictures were on.  That felt like more of a memento from the party.

I am not sure when my next article is out, either the December issue of Romantic Country or the one after. It is all turned in with the text and photos.Karlascottage8 I can’t show you the pictures, but can give you a tease with this slice of one.

And I have a big favor to ask.  If anyone saw the article I wrote and enjoyed it, could you please let the editor know?  A quick little note to her might mean me getting more articles to write, and hey, that means more parties for us!!! Thanks!

Today I had a real life party, here at the cottage.  Ghost_muffins_006 A few good friends came by for muffins and yogurt and coffee.

I made the muffins with applesauce instead of oils and added lots of healthy extras like walnuts, raisins, flax seed, whole wheat flour, etc. They really were good and gooey and moist. (and I had cream cheese icing on the side in case the muffins were too healthy)

We had 3 kinds, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Zucchini, and Blueberry-Cranberry.  Wish I could throw a real life party to meet all of you!

But I will be seeing Silver Bellas soon in Omaha.Ghost_muffins_018_2
