Beach babes at Siesta Key

On my annual Sister Trip to Florida, we were joined by all but one of both of my sister’s kids, thanks to Sissy’s generosity.

75FE68C2-9C00-486A-B12A-40419D3C37F6

Sissy also brought everyone bags from Gudren, and wanted a photo of us together holding the colorful bags. 6A28AB5C-FF6F-4346-88BC-61063658BAE3

So we decided to go all super model, and pose with scarfs blowing in the breeze as we leapt into the air.

DBD2F08E-78E7-4AF6-B659-17C47BF37365Uhm, we are not super models.

But we know how to have fun.

FEC39F18-898C-4486-84A5-3ECBC3F26E16

Maybe Sissy is model material.  I love this photo that I took of her.

DE045D99-8911-4DF1-A6AA-CA842C4811C0

And this one.  I channeled my inner Tyra Banks and told her to find the light.

We always try to use the ocean backdrop to get some good sister pics each year.

D55005C9-7FE9-4DB7-9CA6-9CC2AE928DEF

And this time, we were able to get more family shots.

577814A7-5D77-4D1F-B5FB-43DF04559672

And I got to spend time with people I rarely see.

D57586F9-7FEE-4627-91B1-0513FB552F89

I love having all the silly photos as souvenirs of the trip.

03CC0EE8-B4EA-4E1F-81A2-351E817E9C37

And the fun pictures.

5532B488-DA87-4867-8CCF-EA998381E96C

As well as our traditional, casual, sister pics.

871ECCB6-2DEC-4E6C-B1DF-BC97017BCE01

There was even a pretty, great niece there to snap photos of.

E9EC7B0F-8CAA-458F-9AF7-231C40E1430E

There were gorgeous skies to use as backdrops.

FC97AAA9-3879-4302-9070-AA38CBA425ADAlthough it can be hard to focus on faces without the light blowing out behind them.

DF4FD2CD-174B-4E3B-9227-51B667004FF1

Sometimes the faces are shadowed if I get the water or sky correct.

28FEA9F9-9810-44E4-A272-DDA593856477

Mostly, we are just so happy to be together, we constantly have our cameras out to capture the short time we have with each other.

Because we know that, in a blink it is over.

Sugarplum Fairies

fairies, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage

IMG_7915

I had such a nice day at my friend, Tami's house.

IMG_7923

She generously invites a group of us for craft parties and supplies lots of fun things to make.

IMG_7925

While I was tempted by her table of goodies and the projects she had prepared, I had "homework" to do.

IMG_7916

I wanted to finish up another flock of fairies to add to the Boutique.

IMG_7929

So I brought my own items to work on, and managed to get about 10 fairies done that day between chatting, visiting with friends, and visiting the kitchen for magnificent, tasty treats.

IMG_7936

I am blessed with good friends, the ladies from this group are Birdsong Peeps that are somewhat local, and who try to get together on a regular basis.

IMG_7918

Thank you, Tami, for arranging these dates to enjoy our friends!

IMG_7919

And thank you to everyone who has bought Sugarplum fairies from me this holiday season, so I could indulge myself in making so many of them!

IMG_7932

I am rather fond of these little darlings!

IMG_7931

If you would like one, they are $12 and you can find them in the Boutique.

Transforming a snow globe

holiday decor

IMG_7717

Last summer, I found a boxful of ugly snow globes at an estate sale.  I had big plans to remake them, but ended up setting them out for sale at A Snowbird's Song.

IMG_7716

Apparently, no one wanted them… So I decided I needed to reclaim them for my original purpose. Some are easier to open than others, this one was pretty easy to get apart.

IMG_7718

The snowman was exchanged for a little pink angel, and I made an arch from wired tinsel and millinery blooms and placed it over the vintage tree behind her. Then, poured on tons and tons and generous glops of glue.

The glue was camouflaged with mica flakes.

IMG_7719

The wooden base got a coat of distressed white paint, some crepe paper and sparkly bits.

I am kinda glad no one else bought this $1 item, and I look forward to redoing the others that were not purchased.

Seashell Gnomes and Angels at Siesta Key

sea shell fairies, Travel

23C365C4-0BB7-4722-AC97-BE1CEB73CF3B

In honor of the holidays, I made some gnomes and angels instead of fairies.

4C56C201-B438-4305-8BBF-669BDBFFF4E3

I was inspired by these broken shells that already looked like toadstools.

757E3ADA-6A96-4728-8243-3CD0EA2A5076

The tiny red noses were a lucky find by my nephew, who found a sprig of them washed up on the shore.

7773156E-5413-4E0F-93E8-9637137460F1

Nieces also helped gather shells for me.  Shelli saw this “jawbone” and we crafted a Dino as a group project.

D58AFD2A-6047-4862-8104-84C9263380F5

See the inspiration?

BF6CDA30-E239-411F-92DF-033B947B6F44

I think my little gnomes look like they are having a happy, little dance party.  They must love Siesta Key as much as I do.

A tree filled with Sugarplum fairies

fairies, holiday decor, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, vintage paper/collage art

IMG_7816

I have been having waaayyyy too much fun!

IMG_7822

These are addictive, I order making them.

IMG_7829

There are so many ways to create them, and I find it hard to stop.

IMG_7819

If you would like one, they are available in the Boutique.

IMG_7807

Aren't they sweet?

IMG_7816s

They range in price from $9- $16 depending on size, materials. and time put into them.

IMG_7826

They are all done from prints of vintage photos, hand tinted and embellished with as many foofy, vintagey goodies I could put on them.

IMG_7828

They have been a delight to work on, even though the heat has been out in the studio.  I've had a space heater blasting on my toes, but these sweeties have taken my mind off of the cold room.

IMG_7821

I find them "heart warming".

Five Swans A Swimming

bird song art event

0C1A990A-3086-46D5-B839-DADC3421C7CB

Lesa Dailey’s class project at a Snowbird’s Song was a feat of engineering, and an object of beauty.  I was thrilled when she gave the original to me!

16BC2BB8-572D-4A6F-B7E0-69DEAC90E3AD

Especially since she had already given me this sweet snowgal riding a swan.  It was way too generous of her.  I will treasure them, as I do anything she has made.

The tags she used on the packaging were equally adorable.  I thought about putting mine onto my tree, but instead, I am using it here with my newfound, swan collection. 9F4D3B17-051E-4120-851D-7A7488BA9D00

The teachers at my arty weekends gift a kit to each other.  We don’t always get to craft them during the event, personally, I try to save mine to savor later when I have more time.

And it makes me feel better  when I am missing my Peeps!

Since I was lucky enough to have the original, I wanted to make my kit in a different way, not try to match it. Instead of adding the darling swan boat hat, I used the sail material to make a crown.

AC87E243-FDD3-448F-85AA-DD774240AA65

I changed the beak to pink, and used faceted beads for the eyes. I also tilted the neck and head, but maybe she just looks crooked…

5A7C77C4-5828-464B-9E91-EF4745C26EE0

I made the ruffle into a double layer, added lace, strands of pearls, and millinery blooms. Then, I glued her to a candlestick for height.

D728C46C-FA23-4807-9621-48FC7913824A

Of course, I HAD to use to wonderful, white ruffle she provided.  But I kept the rest of the back simple, since I loved the soft, blue velvet and wanted that to show.

Thank you, Lesa!  We love your classes here at the cottage, not only for the challenging way they stretch our skills, but for the pure loveliness you create and the personality you infuse in each of your characters.

IMG_7723

If you are interested in some of the items from A Snowbird's Song, I have listed a few of  the pieces in my Boutique.  There are kits for Angelique the Aviary Queen as well as the completed projects.

The kits come with a collage sheet, so you can make the angel with your preferred lady.  That leaves you with a page filled with other images to use for other crafting plans.  Pink and white are available. There are some holiday ornaments for sale too. And thank you to those who have already shopped with me!

You can find them here.

New in the Boutique, Christmas pretties!!

fairies, holiday decor, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, vintage paper/collage art

IMG_7725

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving? Mine was quiet, but that was nice, I had time to create, photograph a variety of Christmassy goodies, and get things listed in the Boutique!

(I do have kits from the birdcage angel available. Please contact me if interested, they are not in the Boutique yet)

IMG_7731

I am pretty proud of myself, even though I am bordering on being too late for holiday sales.

IMG_7752

Most of the creations are examples for A Snowbird Song.

IMG_7755

Class samples, as well as ideas for using the supply table to make things during free time.

IMG_7764

I also made some collages and ornies using the images from the collage sheets for the classes.

IMG_7763

Those images were so lovely, I was happy to have a few pages of them to work with.

IMG_7734

Not everything is adorned with a hand made Sugarplum Fairy or an angel, tho.

IMG_7760

There are a few other ornies too.

And yet to come? Sugarplum Fairy Banners, always a favorite of mine.

There is more to list, and I hope to get to it soon.  I've had a ton of fun making things. You can find these festive, holiday creations here:

CHRISTMAS IN THE BOUTIQUE

Happy Thanksgiving

celebrations, Dew Drop, family

61B869BC-CA1E-4746-AD0A-8E12527221C4

As years pass and circumstances change, so do family holidays.  I did not expect to have a big Thanksgiving dinner this year, but was happily surprised when we could get everyone together the Sunday before.

E0800BD6-0A6E-44C5-ABBE-4C72B078B2AF

After getting back late Friday night from my Florida Sister Trip, I woke up to Dewdrop and her dad here for  visit.

DCF260EF-3023-463D-9930-C0472744D421

We celebrated with a breakfast cocoa party in front of a Christmas program. Then started whipping up and prepping for a family dinner on Sunday.

9A6FADC7-154E-4C9D-8A3F-CB091B7ABD65

We only had a few days with her, so got as much squeezed into that time as we could.  We weren’t together on her birthday, so took a trip to Target for her to choose a gift.

6190D83C-26F0-4E63-9187-41E52DBFB38B

We snuck in as many cuddles as we could, went to see Frozen 2, had a couple of dance parties, and crafted.  The poor kid got sick while here, so much of the time she was napping and watching movies.

0CC0478A-A4D0-4101-B817-AD72066C4902

They are headed back east today, and it might be a while til I see her again.  I feel thankful that she was here, no matter how long.

At the airport Friday night, this tree was available to add a leaf with your thankful messages to it.  I wrote one that said, “people I love”

And I wasn’t surprised to find that many of the leaves expressed similar sentiments.   Family was repeated many times.  I hope that all of those travelers writing about their family were on their way to see them and be together.

Thanksgiving Day itself will be a quiet one this year for us, but the date on the calendar isn’t what counts.  I am lucky I had a family day, and some time with my little one.

I will take that any day of the year.

An Abundance of Thoughtfulness

bird song art event

A6730533-52B3-48C3-BB79-AA3E30559154

The Peeps visiting me for a Snowbird’s Song, came bearing gifts.  Lori Oles created this gem for me from rough cut garnets and vintage treasures.

E51FAB9F-152B-44AF-ADBC-4BE88210A365

For the tweets and gifts , I hand dyed fabric bags, and placed them out on the seats the night before the party like hanging stockings on the mantel on Christmas Eve.

5143D8BD-0A2B-4A94-B15E-3A332825611C

Just like dozens of jolly St Nicks working their magic, the joyful Peeps over-stuffed the bags with delightful gifts.

There was an array of hand made gifts, treats, mini kits, art supplies and more.  Generosity times ten.

Gail made these itsy bitsy stocking brooches.

465B35B6-4A5D-41B8-B4E4-FD1650ECF232

Terri made multiple versions of this cottage tree ornament for everyone.  This is the one I received.

07B2ECC2-8197-4615-A0C0-3FA198AF1116

Our Southern belle friend, Lulu gifted everyone with jewels and beautiful baubles.

27865592-267A-4E1E-863E-8D0383116241

This is the special one she made for me.

B94C4E8C-5FE8-4966-A1F1-AB907CBF9ECC

My Sis, Terry also brought jewelry.  Hers was sterling with genuine stones, Nora chose moonstone earrings that matched a necklace she had brought with her.

B42EF6BF-4A9E-41DA-AF49-4963BA9F3FF5

Terry brought a special gift for me, my favorite chocolates, from See’s.

E87FAAC3-DCDB-4D93-8DB6-3431F7667D31

She also brought a gift for my husband, a wooden golf cart handcrafted by her husband, Dale.  The tiny wheels actually turn, this is adorable.

71927EEB-07BD-4E81-AEBF-D02CC76ADA27

I was blessed to get many special treats myself.  Like this nest filled with felted eggs from Kim.

435263FA-A125-47C4-B34E-D67EDE22D00D

There was so much generosity flowing my way that I wanted to savor the packages, and waited to open them after everyone had left. This sachet and bird are from Maggie.

53DE66B9-28B3-4B21-AF88-ED05A9527EDF

When the guests were gone, the house was feeling empty and lonely.  I cheered myself up by going through the thoughtful gifts and finding the perfect spots to use them in my home.  This pearl encrusted nest from Suzanne went with my nature inspired tree.

F60A7DCA-EFD4-4214-9D32-4EF579E1E457

The chocolate bar shaped Oklahoma was a perfect fit for my belly… and the ornie that Teresa gave to me with it went on the tree in my studio.

C3CAD10C-7CF0-4355-8D0E-BCD734200D9A

Jeannie gave me this hat that fits like a warm glove, ideal for cold, Kansas winters.

20025D5D-B133-4BBB-822A-D1E49E5F9DBC

Jane knows my love of hats, and brought a bag filled with vintagey floral ones to play with.

02044024-2D3B-4750-A3C0-A7D6041C8587

Carol gave me luscious supplies to play with too.  And European chocolates.

D135E83F-4ED1-4737-99D7-9698CBD228B7

Connie and Nancy brought a pumpkin festival of bath products that I am working my way through and enjoying this autumn.

B9149BAD-FAAF-40FE-9FAF-A1AD951CC2C2

Linda gifted me with lavender honey products that look really pretty in my guest bath, but I think I will set them aside to use in late February when I need to remember that winter is not forever.

289971F6-76CE-4779-896F-6192AD562B58

And was gifted with vanilla scented creams to brighten the holidays.

938AD2C8-27DA-473D-8F6E-3B9B4681B92F

Tami crafted this pink reindeer diorama that now sits on the table next to my cozy chair that I watch tv from.

CD3E70B3-71BE-4991-BF28-6ED661CFA69A

Across from me on the coffee table, I keep this creation from Lesa.

3B132D06-60DC-4B32-A2AA-475CA224FA90

Seriously, the generosity the group showed to each other and to me was over the top.  I did not get photos of everything, and hope that I don’t offend anyone by not posting photos of the bounty they provided.

62F3A902-904E-4302-93C6-5CCE0A3EC703
But after seeing the warm hearted sharing, I do not think that they are the types who would be upset.  These gifts were given for  heartfelt reasons, not done to show off.

D56472C2-47F8-4F69-8A8E-736602584532

Nora hand wove this bracelet, and every time I wear it, it will feel like an embrace from my friends.

F1AC74E3-5CEA-495A-B5FC-949116AEED25

All of the presents, for the group, for the door prizes, and the personal ones for myself were greatly appreciated.

We had enough door prize donations for everyone to get one, plus grand prizes, and a few more rounds of gifts from the prize table, so that some people got more than one.

7C192926-69E9-4A7A-9DB8-4B543F378CAF

Beth’s traditional needlework apron is always a coveted prize.

The excitement from the Peeps who give the presents is equal to those who get them.  I love the ones they give to me, but the biggest gift of all is the generosity I see them sharing with each other.  I am quite appreciative with the jovial atmosphere and happy gift giving between them.

Thank you, all!

The rest of the Snowbird projects

After our lesson from Lesa with the magnificent swan, we were ready for something more laid back.  Her class was 4 hours, with a lunch break, and my Angelique the Aviary Queen was a simple task to fill the rest of the day.

8CB2ED33-D6C2-4908-8F7D-5ED4E33A24AA

Here is one in progress.

ACEA491F-8044-494B-90D7-A0886BF3782E

The Peeps made some very pretty angels, ready for the holidays.

F068C80F-EE87-45F0-B4CC-FF2CE2258595Sunday was an ornament day.

51B2D329-2DB2-42D0-B75C-52D22BBE2536

We had three, one hour classes.

8A5E817D-ECCD-4D3C-8DFD-52AD6C2A9EB7Lori Oles crafted beauty from pipe cleaners and scraps of fabric. By the way, people raved to me about her clear cut, no nonsense teaching style.

And she is a powerhouse.  That lady pitched in and helped me above and beyond anything I would ever ask of her!

A715D6D1-EDE7-4839-AA25-60CD9A1D9E1C

My 2nd class was an updated take on the old fashioned styrofoam ball ornaments from the 60-70s.

B760F9F3-0BC4-487F-A241-395BC46D6B97

And Beth’s was a needlework ornie.

746D6A26-DDD1-435D-B95D-4A2B5EFE0CD5

The three classes were called, Snow Blossom, Snowball, and Snowdrop.

89838E37-B4FB-42C6-AD4D-C3900D4FF82C

Twinkle joined us for some of the classes, but preferred napping on Susie’s bag to getting any real work done. She spent some time lap hopping too and got plenty of cuddle time.

AB26A556-55FB-44DF-8537-DD0BE99F230F

There were lots of different takes on all of the projects, that is always my favorite part.

3C460C22-5A7C-4448-84EB-AAF614FB371C

I love seeing how each artist makes the project to suit themselves.

EF20751A-84E9-44D5-85CC-4202172A6F27

We spent the afternoon delving into piles of supplies to foof up what we started on, finish the swan, or craft something one of a kind.

96B768F6-619B-4570-9AB6-4DCD40A0A814

Examples of what could be done with the provided supplies were hung to view, and advice or help was offered.  But mostly people just puttered and played.

AAF48AFE-AB3F-4B99-B4F5-6A9A7A41F541

For those who wanted more structure, bottle brush tree/tart tin kits were available too.

8F2B15C0-FDDC-4402-8BF9-A69B57979C58

After seeing all of the lovely ways that the teacher’s kits were made up, I look forward to studio time where I get to create my own versions, they looked fun.

46D720AF-3EE2-4028-9AB5-9AFD87662758

Thanks to my fabulous teachers, Beth Leintz, Lori Oles, Jenn Hayslip, and Lesa Dailey!

And to Guncle Randy along with honorary guncle, Jason, for all of the heavy lifting, laughter, and good food.

76BB8F8A-2638-4C42-98A7-3E0F6F717E84

Terry deserves a huge thank you for her magical cupcakes, generosity, and kitchen/vendor night help.

A95B2E8F-B170-43EB-BFC0-1D34D6F2B438My long time friend, Angie, made use of her extensive shopkeeping skills on vendor night too.

09059ABC-9CFF-4CF4-BA25-484150777E70

We had a creative, excited, laughing, talented, friendly flock of no drama buddies grace the studio with their loveliness.

And I appreciated each and every one of them.
