A road trip through the plains and mountains

family, Sugarwings, Travel

IMG_3656

Our Wyoming trip to see family over St Pat's was just as nice as can be.  Sugarwings reunited with her cousin, Sydnee.  They "ship" their names, Leandra and Sydnee, to Syd-Lee, and are best buds.  I was thrilled to find these green (ish) matching shirts at Target for them to wear-

Together we are better than Unicorns, Sprinkles, and Rainbows.

Perfect!

IMG_3641

They cheerleaded on trampoline during a family football game (no, I did NOT play), crafted, treated us to green mani-pedis, and each used their copious make believe skills nonstop.

IMG_3620

We also spent some time with Grandma Joan, in the assisted living center. And even better, she felt good enough to come over to the house for a dinner and a brunch!

IMG_3624

I was torn over seeing this hanging prominently in her room.  I painted it in '87, it is a scene from Arkansas.  It was sweet that she'd saved it, but sad that it wasn't a better painting…. I should paint something new for her to replace it, I think my style now has improved. Visiting family can become a stroll down a lane of forgotten artwork, that can be a cringy tour of past ineptitudes.

If you own a painting of mine from ages ago- please, please, please don't feel like  you have to display it or you'll hurt my feelings!!! I'm fine (thrilled) with you taking it down, throwing it away, burning it, or disposing it in the best way to prevent me from that gut wrenching feeling of

"OH NO, what was I thinking?"

IMG_0427

Green isn't always my color, so I made a bracelet to wear for the holiday and avoiding a pinch.  Then brought another for my sister-in-law as a thanks for hosting us.  I brought more beads and some child sized memory wire for the Syd-Lees to make their own jewelry too.

IMG_3613

The drive across Colorado and Wyoming was breathtaking, and we were extremely lucky that this was old snow, the storm had passed, roads were clear, but the view of remnants was lovely to see.  I enjoyed the drive, as we listened to Bridge to Terabithia, and Stardust. A good book can make a trip fly by, and if you have a view like this, sometimes the trip can seem to go too quickly.

Sugarwings is an ideal travelling companion, she was in the car for hours on end and never once asked if we were there yet, or had a single complaint.

IMG_3684

Of course, breaking up the drive with an overnight at Great Wolf didn't hurt.

IMG_3685

And I had some fun at Great Wolf too.  Swimming for a few hours makes up for sitting in the car that long.

Thank you to the Wyoming Nathans for a warm, welcoming, fun filled, visit!  It's just too dang bad that our family is so far apart, it would be nice to see them more often.

Oh, and thank you to all who cleared out my wallpaper scrap packs and journals!  All were mailed when I got back from our travels, and I hope to have more cut and listed to sell too. But for today, I'm happily knee deep in Easter Eggs with vintage millinery. I came out to the studio with a mindset to work on wallpaper packs, but you know how that goes.  All of a sudden, I'm glittering eggs and gluing on ribbons and flowers. instead of cutting papers.

Photos soon!

A rare find- never ending rolls of old wallpaper on a junking day!

antiques/junking, Books, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, vintage paper/collage art

IMG_3779

Beth and I had a morning out at estate sales and the Old West Bottoms antique district, and while out, I hit paydirt.  Again, and again!

IMG_3780

Which is pretty rare, to find such old, and wonderful wallpaper at an estate sale then turn around and find more at a shop, that wasn't even an antique or vintage store.

IMG_3781

(Well, that scene isn't all that wonderful, is it? But the black, graphic background is really pretty, even though the drawing reminds me of the Sunday funny papers).

IMG_3782

This makes up for the goofy cartoon scenes.

IMG_3783

Most of the papers have metallic elements.

IMG_3784

And many have GLITTER!

IMG_3785

The only problem is that they are extremely old and fragile.  I ironed a lot of it to use, and discovered that it is best for small projects. So I cut up some smaller, scrap packs to sell in the Boutique.

IMG_3786

I'm in love!

IMG_3791

I had to make something out of it, right away.

IMG_3793

So, I covered this box, inside and outside with some of the glittery goodness.

IMG_3821

These piles are the scrap packs I told you about. Some are for sale in the Boutique, ($14) one is for a giveaway to celebrate my find (details to come in my next post).

IMG_3822

The rest will be included with the purchase of the art journals that I made with the fab papers.

IMG_3844

You can find the books here.

IMG_3796 IMG_3799

As well as a few other finds, and some bargain markdowns that I put on sale.

But please be patient with me for shipping if you'd like to order something. I'm headed to Wyoming to see family and will be sending out boxes on Wednesday next week.

A new do for the Doodle

IMG_3557

Sugar went to the doggie spa and came back a whole, new woman.  (I think I could use a spa break myself…. I wonder if Petsmart can work wonders with me?)

IMG_3804 IMG_3805

Here she is before her makeover.

IMG_3567

And after!

I was happy to see those eyes. But everyone misses her fluffy style.  Personally, I wish I could afford to keep it this short all of the time, she spends a lot of time out in the woods, and her fluff is made of some sort of velcro that attracts everything she runs by.

IMG_3561

We are lucky that these two like to clean each other up after a run on the Fairy Berry Trail behind our house.  They are pretty good about chewing burs out of their fur.  But with Sugar's tight curls, she tends to matt and needs a lot of extra brushing.

Sugar doesn't shed, but I wouldn't call her needs "low maintainence".

IMG_3546

She is worth the extra care, she is such a sweetheart, her name fits her well.

Fun with Fairies at Make it with Michaels

Dew Drop, Sugarwings

IMG_3533

These two love to go to Michael's Kids Crafts class on Saturdays.

Funny, they have more art supplies at home than they will ever get to the bottom of, and have encroached so much upon my studio that sometimes they have more space out there than I do.

IMG_3532

Still, they love going to Michaels and playing with different supplies.

I sure understand, I certainly don't turn down a chance to add to my stash of goodies to work with and am thrilled to get a craft day with good friends. There is something about working on a project while talking to other creative types that make it extra special.

IMG_3501

On this day, the little girl across the table was practicing for her part in an upcoming play, and all the kids joined in on the songs she was singing.

Pretty

dang

cute.

IMG_3505

Pussy Willows and Bluebirds with Pink Roses, ahhhhhh

cottage

IMG_3813

Somewhere, someplace, it is Springtime, and I have proof.  The grocery store was selling pussy willow branches and I just had to buy an armful for myself.  (now, don't try to tell me that they were grown in a greenhouse, because in my mind, they are gloriously, blooming in a field of flowers under a spring sky, and I want some of that magic in my house)

IMG_3817

Such a sweet, fluffy plant!! Mom had one planted in our yard when I was a kiddo, but I haven't been able to get one to grow here. I tried a weeping pussy willow once, and had no luck. I think this year is the time to try again.  Because when these fuzzy little kittens  spring up, they always make me smile.

IMG_3810

After bringing the branches home, I decided that I needed to get my mantel looking more season appropriate.  I'd still had the rose paintings covered with burlap and angel wings. Those had been put up for Christmas and thought I'd leave them for Valentine's Day too, but they were still covering up the pink flowers into March.

IMG_3811

It was nice to see my little bluebird of happiness again!  To keep him company, I sat some other bluebird inspired pieces out on the shelf.

IMG_3812

That larger bird is a vase, a gift from my friend, Lisa. I think it needs fresh pink roses in it.

IMG_3516

Speaking of roses, I still have a Valentine topiary on my  cabinet's chalkboard door.  Maybe I'll have the grand fairies color it in for me, I still like it. But it seems too wintery right now.  A bit of colorful chalk should help.

IMG_3820

While I had the camera out, I thought I'd take a photo from the other side of the room.  Last time the bigger kids were here doing their circus tricks, they forgot to put away the lira.  So, I am keeping the ladder I used to redo the mantel next to the hoop. If I don't, I forget it is there and clunk my head every time I walk through the room.

The ladder kind of obstructs the view of my bluebird mantel and pussy willow branches, but I have to admit, it doesn't really bother me.  When you have grand fairies in and out of the house, things are rarely pristine.  Sometimes, when my husband is out of town, and the kids aren't visiting, I clean everything up and enjoy a day or two of serene surroundings, but it doesn't last.

And that is okay, because a lively house is better than a perfect one, right?

“Good Day, February. I Said GOOD DAY!” A month that starts with a Willie Wonka quote has to be a good one, right????? Welcome March! Goodbye, February. Adieu. Aufwiedersehen. Gesundheit. Farewell.

cottage

IMG_3494

Not to be a whiner, but DANG, February was cold! I will not miss that.  On the other hand, I had two wonderful Valentine gatherings with friends, and one with family, so the whole month wasn't so bad.

I also had a mini craft day with The Other Karla and Beth. I'd been feeling a tad uncreative lately and didn't have a plan for making something that day. Luckily, Beth had a plan for me and set me to making this tiny book with a stack of vintage papers she had for me to use.

Sometimes, just gluing in background papers and putting something together gets the artsyness going. I felt much better after compiling pages. Now, I think I'm ready to fill them up with embellishments and pictures.  It might just be my next photo album.

For me, photo albums and scrapbooks are excellent projects when I am not at full capacity.  They are easy, fun to do, and don't take a lot of thought.  Winter doldrum type work.

But hey! Winter is slipping away, right??!!

Welcome home, March, I'm thrilled to see you arriving!

IMG_3506

My pal, Diane gifted me with this Mason Bee home.  I can't wait to get it set up in the veggie garden.  Having this in the dining room now, reminds me of Spring's approach.

IMG_3495

Another friend,  Connie, gifted me with this little painting.  It may be itty bitty, but it has a full sized impact of serenity. I'm not sure what season she meant it to be, but in my mind, it looks like the slow greening of spring while the gray of winter still lingers.

Exactly what I need on the mantel right now to focus my mind on the promise of warmer days ahead!

So, how can I complain about a chilly winter, cooped up indoors (while my fitbit has been used only as a watch, not to count steps) when I have such kind hearted, generous friends who give me such sweet presents?

I'm grateful for the changing season and for the good friends who made the cold bearable.

A big blob of black

dogs, Sugarwings

IMG_3482

We adore this dog.  I can't believe I almost didn't keep her when the other puppies were leaving for their new homes.

Even though we didn't realize she would end up quite this big back when she was the tiny runt of the litter.

IMG_3483

She weighs about the same as Sugarwings now.

But luckily, she is a well mannered pup.  We say she is an old soul, she acts more like a 5 year old dog than a baby.  She learns fast, and listens well.

IMG_3509

But she might need a haircut…

Sugar likes to curl up on the bench at the foot of the bed and when she does, it is hard to see where one end starts and the other begins.

IMG_3481

The grand fairies styled her hair so that we can see her eyes.  Well, kinda.  There is a LOT of hair for those eyes to hide behind.

Sometimes you want to make an art journal, other times you just need to get some pictures into a scrap book

Books, family

IMG_3769

There are times when I want to create a beautiful book.  Other times, I want to display family photos in an arty way, and spend some time being creative.

Then, there are the days that I just have to get some pics slapped into a book and get on with it!

It is important to me to save momentos throughout the year and add them to albums with family photos, but I don't always have the opportunity to spend a lot of time on it.  This book, is one of those kinds.  It is a "git 'er done" book, that  I will enjoy looking through over the years, but didn't take much time to put together.

IMG_3760

It is made with a vintage album, some of the pages were fragile, and there weren't enough of them. So, I've added scrapbooking cardstock to most, covering tears and weak spots for reinforcement.  Folded pages of cardstock are taped in, randomly to add more space for photos.

Here, I've used the old paper as is, and simply glued down pictures in various sizes.  At the bottom, I cut out a grouping of family members for contrast.

IMG_3761

I print out pictures on matt photo paper, and don't use standard sizes.  Instead of doing wallet, 3 x5, 4×6, I insert the photos I want to use into a document, and fill a page with many shapes and sizes.

The grand fairies love taking photo booth shots, so I save those from places we visit throughout the year, some I glue in as a strip, some I cut up and sprinkle around the page like here.

IMG_3763

And when you get tired of gluing things in, a pocket to fill up is a good idea!

IMG_3765

Another way to make more space is to adhere cards.  They are fun as is, but also open up and have room for photos inside.

This section also has a narrow flap created with folded cardstock, to add more pictures too.

IMG_3766

There is a shelf in the studio where I stack up saved bits and pieces throughout the year.  One of the things I saved was a bracket a nephew drew up for the big ping pong match at last summer's family reunion.  The landscapes are from paintings I'd done about the trip, made into cards, so are filled with more photos.

The photo of my two sons and husband wasn't fitting, so I cut our legs off, made the picture into a strip and turned it vertical.  At the bottom, I cut out Sugarwings and her mommy.  This isn't exactly an arty layout, but it is filled with things that mean something to me and is more interesting than a simple row of photos all the same size and shape.

IMG_3767

Well, that is gaudy, isn't it?

But fun, and suits the subject, the grand fairies at Valentines season.

IMG_3770

The edges are trimmed out in ruffled crepe paper, and topped with scattered hearts.

IMG_3771

I've tried coordinating scrapbook paper to the photos I've chosen, but haven't been too matchy matchy. It is mostly background.

On this page, I added a hand made card from Beth, and cut out a message from another card I'd gotten and added it as a banner.  Beth's artwork has a picture added to the backside too.  The edges of the page are trimmed in velvet and sparkly ribbons for contrast.

IMG_3772

Here is a selection of vacation pics, topped off with a series of sample passport photos.  The maillady who took them had trouble getting them right, and I was at the post office, applying for the passport for over an hour. She gave me some of the trashed ones and I kept them, to add to the book.

The background is a map of the city we stayed in, with Puerto Vallarta cut out, made into a banner, and added over the top.  I really like to save hotel receipts, maps, brochures, and other larger pieces to use as backdrops to travel pages.

On this one, I've outlined the photos with a blue marker.  And not perfectly either.

IMG_3773

These two pages are an example of layering lots and lots and lots of memorabilia and photos.

The background is a map from one music festival, and it covers both pages.  Over that, I've glued down a booklet from another festival and filled up all of the pages with pictures, including the cover.  I saved a couple pairs of eclipse glasses that we'd worn at one of the festivals, one intact, the other with the lenses filled with pictures like a frame.

Then, I started laying out pictures from both events, and lots of them. Some cut into shapes, some with the people cut out, and glued them down overlapping.  To make them stand out, I drew around them with metallic marker.

IMG_3774

These pages are busy too.  And are tied together with a simple background color. Some of the photos are glued to contrasting paper, and then cut out so they are framed.  Others are cut out with round or scalloped punches.

In my opinion, a variety of shapes makes an interesting lay out.

IMG_3775

There was some bird's nest scrapbook paper that I put a cut out pic of Guncle Randy and I onto, and I added a couple of little feathers to our shoulders.

IMG_3776

Last summer, the grand fairies painted with shaving cream and food coloring.  I saved some of their artwork to use as a backdrop here too.  I thought the colors were ideal for Halloween. Over the painted paper, I drew some scrolls and vines, this page got a little more attention than some of the other ones.  I also added some old millinery blooms.

IMG_3777

The adjoining page is a simple background, and is layered with two cut out Dewdrops over the other photos.

IMG_3778

Here is more of the paper the grand fairies painted.    I tore strips of it to make borders, then used a scallop punch to make smaller pictures to paste around the border.

Now, time to start collecting for next year's book!

We never outgrow Crown Center and Kaleidoscope

Dew Drop, Sugarwings

IMG_3386

I've been taking Sugarwings to Crown Center for 8 years now.

IMG_9654

Our first time she was barely past being a toddler.  They have the coolest, most artistic, interactive play area and it changes themes periodically.  We've seen the Fairytale village three times, have been to a recycling workshop, visited Oz, and many,  many more. adventures that Hallmark has sponsored there.

IMG_3416

Right now, it is set up as "Funville," a career fair.

You can work in an ER…

IMG_3428

Be a surfer…

IMG_3405

A baker…

IMG_3432

Be on a TV news show…

IMG_3423

Or teach…

IMG_3413

There are also opportunities to be a fireman, astronaut, president, rodeo bull rider, or a bumble bee bear.

A bumble bee bear?

Hmmm.  Don't really get this one.

You could even crawl into a tunnel and mine for gems.  Or be a magician and pull a rabbit out of a hat. Both are not top professions in today's world, but real jobs none the less.

Bumble Bee Bear, though.  Seriously?

IMG_3402

There is a lot to do and see at Crown Center, including Sealife and Legoland, as well as the free activities like the Funville career center we went to and Kaleidoscope.

IMG_3391

Hallmark owns it and I can't say enough about how much we appreciate what they do for the kids that come here.

IMG_3397

Never ending art supplies, colorful, exciting rooms to explore, and as much creating as you can jam pack into 45 minutes of fun.

IMG_3385

We try to go a couple of times a year.  I don't know why we don't go more often. It is great on cold, blustery days when we are tired of being cooped up.

IMG_3395

And ideal for birthday parties too. There is even free parking.  We go to see plays at the Coterie Theater for kids, eat at the Crayola cafe, draw and color in the Crayola shop, and basically make a big day out of it.

I know I don't outgrow the experience. I sure hope that the grandfairies will still go with me for at least a few more years.
