a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?

To Sugarwings- and THANKS swappers- and OOOPS

a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?, Books, I do tend to run on, don't I?, parties, show and tell, Sugarwings, swaps, vintage paper/collage art, We're having a party

IMG_5032
Sugarwings and I had a pretend tea party this weekend, and we both opened hostess gifts from the Dorothy tag books swap.  I'm so touched by all the thoughtfulness!  Anyone who knows me, knows that the way to my heart is to spoil that little fairy grand baby of mine.

Or to make something for me,  I Iove hand made things!  Or to give me ephemera and supplies to use in my own work. Or to to make a thoughtful gesture.  I guess there are lots of ways to get to me,  I so appreciate an act of kindness!

IMG_4989

Before the party started, we opened a gift from Barbara, that she sent, "just because".  I swear, don't you meet the nicest people in the blog world?

We called it the Yellow Brick Road Dress. It's a colorful concoction featuring a road, appliqued ruby slippers down the front, and poppies stitched to the shoulder.

IMG_4960

Sugarwings has both red glittered slippers from the Oz movie and silver glittered slippers that were in the Oz book. I found them at garage sales, and she loves them so much, that she insists they are on her bed at night when I tuck her in.  Not exactly cuddly, but they make her happy.  And I know how women can be about their shoes.  Personally, I have Fred Flinstone feet and am always happy to find a non-Birkenstock that fits me. So, I can't be a shoe person like she is. Wish I could.

Agnes Rosebud was invited to the party, and I dressed her up in the poppy headband that Barb had made to go with the dress. But the little pup wasn't all that interested in our presents.

IMG_5001
Until this one came out of the box!  Even the dogs were remembered with a hostess gift of tasty treats.

And oh my! Do you see that flying monkey on the altered blocks??  Sorry its not facing the camera completely, the two blocks spell OZ in green glittered letters and its cuter than a bug! Its from Amy Bauer.

IMG_4986

The monkey was all wrapped up as a gift to me,  but Sugarwings can't quite believe it is not for her.   If we have to arm wrestle for it, I think I can take her.

IMG_5011
The ribbon in her hair was part of the wrapping that I saved from the packages filled with tags.  I salvage every little bit of tissue, bubble wrap, and ribbon that comes along with the avalanche of artwork.  When you order goods from my shop, I try to use as much recycled packaging as I can, and the outside of the envelopes often are covered with black sharpie scribbles marking out the old addresses. But I really take time and care to make the purchases look good when you get the package open.

And so many of the swappers did too. I did some oohing and awing over the way some of the tags were wrapped up.  Then, I scooped up the stuff to save and use again! Thanks, swappers!

IMG_5017

The Good Witch/Bad Witch buttons that are pinned to her Yellow Brick Road dress were gifts from my Sissy to Sugarwing's Hippie Chick Mommy.  This kid gets her love of all things Oz from her mom and her dear departed Nanny, who were both huge Oz fans.

As much as I enjoy the Dorothy story, I don't come close to those girls.  They are fanatics.

IMG_5030
I've become more of an Oz afficionado since being around them. I can definately quote the movie, act it out, and sing the songs when called for.

Toto is my favorite character, so I really enjoyed this cute zipper pull and will add it to my little fairie's winter coat.

IMG_4936

Many of the swappers included extra tags for my own book, or hand made thank you cards that were so cute, I had to add them to my tag book.

IMG_4934
This one features little Agnes Rosebud as a tiny baby.

IMG_4938

When I host a swap, I'm lucky to get lots of extra tags to fatten my books up.  I have them all on display in the studio hanging from this metal shelf. And everyonce in a while I'll take them down to flip through.  Its wonderful to have a mini collection of so many artist's work.

IMG_4946
To receive hand made, personal gifts from the artists too, is just amazing!  Cheryl made this box and book and I was floored when I opened it.  Do you ever feel like  a dweeb compared to other artists?  I was overwhelmed by so many of the really extrordinary art that arrived at my doorstep for this swap.  Its impressive to see the talent out there, and even more impressive to see all the tags spread out on my table tops to drool over.

So, if your book is a little curled up on the edges, that is just drool from my admirations.

IMG_5027

Okay, now here comes the embarrassing part. I hate to admit this to you, but I might have screwed up.  After finishing all the mailing, there is still a book on my desk….

I never said I was good at this. I just said I tried really, really hard to stay organized.

All the names are marked off the list.  So, I have no idea who didn't get one.

On the other hand, so many people sent in extra tags, and I made so many myself,  and of course, that will really throw off the numbers.

So, if you don't have your book by the end of the week, please let me know. So Sorry.  Very Sorry.

Also, someone didn't get a Toto tag in their basket on the cover of the book. If your basket is empty let me know. There is a Toto on my desk waiting to be reunited with his Dorothy.  ooops again.

Thank you, to all who were part of the swap and thanks also for all of the thoughtful gifts!  Totally unessacary, but greatly enjoyed by us both!

Oops, what about the February giveaway???

a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?, Books, holiday decor, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage
IMG_9029

Where is my mind? Here it is February 22nd and I just realized that I never announced a giveaway for this month!  Maybe it has something to do with making 75 tag book covers, doing 4 watercolors of fairies,  having my fairy grand baby for about 5 days each week this month, or from helping my son move to a new home, or maybe just because I've had a rotten cold and am just not thinking straight.

Some months are busier than others, huh? But at least I didn't forget completely.  Since my mind is filled with making Alicey things right now, I thought maybe you would enjoy making some too. So, as a gift for this month, I'm offering a stash of supplies to make Alice tags.

Yep, I panicked and just swept up some stuff from my desk to give you.  But, hey, its good stuff!  You'll get 4 large tags, 2 small tags, a copy of one of the tags I was making up for the covers, 3 pages from the old book, some red gummed labels, blue flocked wallpaper (which reminds me of Alice's dress), a key with hearts, a heart charm, and some coordinating vintage trim (from my Great Aunt Caroline's stash).

Leave a comment to enter if you'd like to make your own Alice themed tags.

IMG_9009
Today, I started to gather up a pile of stuff that had been accumulating on my "to sell" table.  I've neglected getting photos done. So, I told myself that I was going to photograph and LIST every bit of it.

IMG_8958
Five hours later, and my shop is newly stocked! I even deleted the "sold" items to clean house a bit and make it easier to shop there.

IMG_9018
This week, I won't have Sugarwings as many days as I have had recently.  I'll miss her, but I honestly need the time to get caught up.  I dropped my husband off at the airport today, and I am kind of looking forward to a week alone to be a whirling dervish of activity.

IMG_9015
Because, not only do I have a watercolor to get done this week, I need to clean up my house and get ready for a little photo shoot.  My good buddy,Carol, who is a talented photographer,  will be helping me with it next Monday.

I'd like to come up with something really interesting for the dining room table that will work for the pictures, plus for a baby shower I am hosting the day after the pictures.  So, I'm hoping to get some "arty" time to create some centerpieces that will do double duty.

IMG_8952

My little helper will be here for a couple days, so I'll still get my Sugarwings fix.  I couldn't go a whole week without her. She seems to be adjusting to her new house with her Daddy, and its looking pretty cute.  He was lucky to find a cool old house to rent, where he can have a massage therapy room for his business too.

 Collages

I'll leave you with a few collages of the new goods in the shop.  And then, I need to get back to gluing tags.  Its exciting to have the whole evening ahead of me, no one to take care of, no dinner to fix, just me and my glue bottle and the TV.  I'm almost giddy.  I love my family and enjoy them when they are here, but I do treasure my studio time, and haven't gotten much lately.

Teaparties, A Gift for YOU, Fairies and a sprinkling of Dust to top it off

a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?, antiques/junking, collections, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), Etsy Goodies, fairies, family, give away, I do tend to run on, don't I?, I've been tagged, paintings, vintage paper/collage art

Teaparty_030 Welcome to the Tea Party!  It is being hosted by those pretty pink people who make everything so nice and everyone is invited to join.  The teaparty will go on all week, so you can return for seconds on scones and tea!

Teaparty_029 Tomorrow is my day to have Sugarwings, so she can’t be here for this party today.  She’s still a bit young, but I can see that very soon, she and Grandmama will be playing fairy tea party together.Teaparty_022

And Twinkle is up for any party, any time.Teaparty_017

These are the hand painted doors to the closet in Sugarwing’s room here at her grandparent’s cottage.  Inside, are all the dress up clothes I am starting to collect for her from garage sales for her to wear at future tea parties.

Teaparty_026

And of course, I have started to collect some fairies to invite as guests to our upcoming events.

The itty bitty ballerina fairy was a gift from Holly, who always has the cutest stuff. Teaparty_016

This pretty cobalt teapot was my mom’s.  The blue framed photo in front is of her, wasn’t she pretty too?

The little rose covered book was made by Beth.

Yes, I see the dust too.  Don’t you know that a person who owns this much junk also owns a lot of dust???Teaparty_002

I used to have a larger collection of teapots, but edited it down to rose-themed, matte white or tarnished silver and threw in some tea cups to match.Teaparty_012

My son built these kitchen cabinets for me, and I had him make sure there was plenty of teapot space on top.

The little pot in front, is my Grandma Smith’s.  She would pack it up in her suitcase and bring it every time she came up to Indiana to visit us from Florida.

Grandma Smith’s is what got me started on the collection.Teaparty_034

Here is a watercolor I did of her silver teapot years ago when I was into quilts and dried flowers.  Now, I just have the painting in the closet of my studio. I should ask my family if anyone wants it.

Nieces? Sisters? Any of you read this? If you want this painting, let me know.

There is a teeny little self portrait in the reflection of the silverTeaparty_001

Here is another sentimental thing for me, my mom’s tea cup (it is under the cake plate and has china roses in it.)

When mom died 5 years ago (it still feels like just yesterday sometimes) Sissy was sweet and divided up mom’s beautiful rose dishes so that we each had 2 place settings to display.  I have built up a collection of matching dishes, well in color and style, if not in pattern, and keep them all on this shelf in my kitchen with fairies, angels and elves.  And probably more dust.Teaparty_010

Did I mention that I love teapots?  I’ve tied mini ones from my kitchen chandelier too.

Teaparty_032

I bought new vintage wallpaper this week and had a wonderful time making tags, tons and tons of tags.  Here is a sample.

Teaparty_033

And since you have been such nice guests at my tea party today, and no one complained about the dust on their teacups, I have a present for you.

I made this refrigerator magnet with some of my new-old wallpaper and brass charms I bought at the flea market last week.

I will give it away today as a gift to a commenter. And remember, I have a giveaway for the month of September, you just have to leave a comment. The comments to win the magnent will count toward that too.

I was tagged by MJ and a couple other people (sorry I lost the emails) for the Thoughtful bloggers award, back when I was coming home from my vacation and never got around to posting about it, I was so behind on everything. I want to thank them and apologize for not noting it.  I was also tagged for the name game by Priscilla and by —- oh my— I lost that email too. I’m sorry.  I’ll find it later so I can thank them.

Anyway, my middle name is JO so, this will be short (even from me, the QUEEN OF RAMBLING)

JJunk!! I Just love Junk!

OOh my gosh, I Just love Junk!

All the rest have 31

a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?, antiques/junking, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), fairies, family, flowers, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art

Shopping_cart_010 Does anyone else notice anything wrong with this calender???

It was a gift from my BIL, the guy on the left in the photos. (my husband is the guy in the middle – but this was 20 some years ago!) He gathered up great family pictures, took them to a copy place and had a memento calender made up for Christmas.

I just realized today, that August really isn’t over.  I don’t think it is my fault that I was confused, although, don’t most people know that only Feb. gets down to just 28 days?? I should remember that poem about the months!

The Month Poem
.

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November;
February has twenty-eight alone,
All the rest have thirty-one,
Excepting Leap-Year, that’s the
time
When February’s days are twenty-nine.

Anyway, there are a couple of bonus days in August for me!!  And that means more chances to enter the drawing for this month.Shopping_cart_026

I didn’t get much work done today. I thought I might, I found this baby corral at garage sales.  Actually, it is two that I put together, so she’d have space to roam in.

Shopping_cart_016But of course, why would Sugarwings want to be corralled when she has a Grandmama to play dress up with? And Twinkle to read stories to?Shopping_cart_008

Or shopping carts shaped like cars to ride in?  We went to the grand opening of the new CVS in our town to use up all of the grand opening special coupons that expired Sept. 1st, (which, is NOT tomorrow, like I thought).

The shopping cart was so fun, we walked around and around the building and played with it outside till another little kid came along who looked like he and his mom needed to borrow it from us.

Shopping_cart_001 So then we went to the grocery store, where the carts aren’t nearly as much fun- but they do have $1.99 flowers!

I bought a bunch of glads and three pots of mini roses, including the cute tiny trellis in each pot, all for $1.99 each.  Shopping_cart_020

I did manage to make ONE THING today, and only half of it is done. I used some old floral cardboard from  a chest that had fallen apart to make a folder for one of my Cottage Collage Kits.Shopping_cart_019

I keep paper goods in a similar chest, but it isn’t much longer for the world, it definitely has seen better days.  I won’t let it go to waste, though. I can see many craft projects in its future after I find a replacement for storage!Shopping_cart_021

You can see the back of the folder here in this photo next to some garage sale purchases from this weekend.

I see a tea party in the making here. I can’t wait till Sugarwings is big enough to play big girl games with me! I’ve been collecting tea sets, doll cradles, dress up clothes, and all sorts of fun things for us to do together.

Don’t forget, there are actually a couple more days left in this month, go ahead and enter the drawing again!!

White paint, and a White Dorky

a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?, antiques/junking, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), give away, Hand Painted Furniture, vintage paper/collage art

How_to_paint_furniture_007_2 My blog buddy, Natasha http://natashaburns.blogspot.com/ let me know that I messed up on the swap amount AGAIN. It isn’t 2 cards, she reminded me, then the next day, she had to remind me again, it isn’t 4 cards and two tags, it is 4 each.  So, I made an extra tag today for her and I am sending it off to Australia as a thanks to her.How_to_paint_furniture_001

I got to play with power tools today! I had to make some signs to paint, so was cutting up some boards I had stored (they used to be my garage!  It was the first garage built in the  county, ages ago, I HAD to save the boards when we demolished the old building!!)

How_to_paint_furniture_006 While I was outside painting boards, I decided to prime and base coat a bunch of things:

4 windows to make into signs

a just her size chair and a little rocking horse for Sugarwings

2 Victorian chairs

a table

a cabinet

and those signsHow_to_paint_furniture_017 that I cut with the jigsaw

Poor Twinks wasn’t as much of a help as she thought!How_to_paint_furniture_019 (see why I call her a Dorkie?)

She ran as fast as she could for the house, and into the breezeway, but got very little paint in there.  We got out the hose and sprayed her (and the breezeway) off.

(oh oh looks like I could use my roots touched up soon- why do I show such bad photos of myself???)How_to_paint_furniture_020

There isn’t much to her when she is wet.

How_to_paint_furniture_012

I have even more paint on me than Twinks had in her fur. But I always look this way, I have a bad habit of wiping my brush on my clothes, so I pretty much either ruin all my clothes, or just get dressed in paint clothes every day.  How_to_paint_furniture_025

A table that I had bought at a garage sale for $1 last month had bad veneer on the top, so after priming and base coating it today, I covered the top in sheet music.

I  found some that says "Moonlight and Roses" and "Love is a Rose", so I painted some roses over the music paper. It isn’t done yet, here is sneak peek.

ArtsyMama is having another party!  Her tea party on May Day was so fun for me, my first real time to dive into blog world and meet people.  Can’t wait for this one, we are asked to give tutorials of projects, so I think I will do one on how to paint furniture. It will be on August 8.

SIX DAYS LEFT TO ENTER MY GIVEAWAY- JUST LEAVE A COMMENT AND YOU ARE IN!

whoops I did it again

a lapse of memory again, or am I just careless?, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers)

Twinkle_009 I am feeling sheepish.  I mixed up the name of the person who sent me the lovely card.  I cannot be trusted to get names and sites right because I don’t have anything book marked in a readable manner. And did I mention I have no memory?

And this is a person I enjoy emailing and "talking" to, I just lost her in the shuffle. Hopefully she reads this sometimes and will let me know so I can show you HER site. Not that Sonias’s isn’t wonderful too, I hope you took a look and enjoyed it!Blue_plate_044_2

See how cute it is?  I think the artist deserves credit and once again I feel bad for screwing up where I got what.  (Yes I have done this before).  I need to find a way to organize all these blogs I look at, so they are easier to keep straight.  I can’t keep everyone straight.

By the way, I am every bit as bad in person, I never remember names and half the time don’t even bother to listen to a name when I am introduced to someone at a party because I know I’ll forget it.  I call people ‘bud’, ‘dear’, ‘honey’, or even ‘buster’ until I can get them memorized. Everyonce in a while I do call someone ‘snickerdoodle’.  Probably shouldn’t.

Later I figured it out!!!!! All on my own, before Cheryl even had to write to me about it. I am not as bad as I thought I was. Well, maybe I am.  Geez, I feel bad about doing that. But anyway, the card maker is Cheryl Sims!!!! http://www.cheryl-weightymatters.blogspot.com/

(By the way, I can’t take credit for being smart and figuring it out, she signed the back)
