Damsels in Distress

antiques/junking, fairies, family, flowers

Florida june 091

The trip to Florida wasn't all sad stuff.  My Aunt's funeral was uplifting, so many people had such good things to say about her.  She was gracious and kind and a wonderful role model to live up to.

While down in the Sunshine State (where we were just about guaranteed a big blast of heavy rain every afternoon), my Sissy and I road tripped it from coast to coast and saw family (and antique shops) all the way.

We stayed with baby bro, Randy, and his family in Jacksonville.  This mosaic is of my furry little niece and nephews. (Yep, that represents more Picassa fun time there, I learned a few more editing tricks!)

Florida june 09

Randy and Kevin's garden is set up as an open invitation for fairies to come and play in the flowers.

Florida june 092

Butterflies too!  The yard is pesticide free, so the soon to be butterflies will be safe.

The place was so inviting, all I wanted to do was explore all the nooks and crannies, because there were such delightful surprises tucked in under the blooms!

Flowers and dolls 003

And what did I buy on the trip?  Well, I have to say that my hat whispering skills were top notch!

Flowers and dolls 004

It was heart breaking to see that Mt. Dora is no longer chocked full of antique shops.  Even so, we did manage to keep busy and I over filled my suitcase.  To the point that it was over the weight limits, and I thought I'd have to stuff my carry on bag full of the heaviest stuff (5 rolls of gorgeous old wallpaper for $2.99!!!) But the Southwest Airlines agent let me leave it as is and didn't charge me for the overweight bag.  SW is always the BEST.

Flowers and dolls 011

These girls were so wrong, they were right.  They caught my eye right away, well, with those garishly bright colors how could I miss them?  But I saw potential in them, even if they are so unattractive they are too embarrassed to look at the camera as is.

Flowers and dolls 012

First thing I did was cut those extra long, monkey styled arms in half!  Then, on this one, I pulled off the brightest of the trims, and added some pretty pastels.  Old crocheted lace, millinery flowers, a new hat (made from velvet flower petals), and of course, some fairy wings!

Now she is feeling self confident in her appearance and is saucily looking right into the eye of the camera.

Flowers and dolls 013

Her formally red, white, and blue sister (who looked a bit too much like Wonder Woman to start with) really had a beautiful design of sequins, I just couldn't live with the colors.  So, a little bit of spray paint with glitter sprinkled on while the paint was still wet gave her a makeover.

She also got a flower petal hat, more flowers on her gown, jewelry and a magic wand made from a hat pin.  And of course, no more monkey arms.  She has dainty little fairy wings, that don't show in this photo.

Sometimes I wonder about what I spend my time on.  I am so far behind from being gone on one trip after another and I know I need to get caught up, get things listed on line and clean up my Etsy and Boutique, but I couldn't help myself. I saw these poor ugly ducklings and had to be their fairy godmother and turn them into swans!

House books 020

I'm also finishing up the books I promised to list and will add all the new items to the shop at once and have a much needed makeover there too.

For now, it is back to my job as a fairy godmother, there are a few of those girls still waiting for my help!

Oh, and the winner of the June giveaway is:

Becca of Bluebirds and Roses. She was one of my very first blog friends, how nice!

Don't forget, a new contest starts today! All comments, all month are in the drawing for whatever the heck that prize will be.

Girls Trip times Three

antiques/junking, celebrations, Food and Drink, Moving to DC

Dc with friends 037

Washington, DC is a beautiful place to be.  Even if you are not a huge museum fan, simply wandering about is pretty entertaining.  Our Girls Trip was such fun.  I even let them drag me from one museum after another with few complaints.   One thing that surprised me, was how much I knew about the exhibits.  I guess from reading Time and Newsweek, I see reveiws of art and absorbed it without even noticing.

Dc with friends 008

One of my pals had lived in the area previously and knew where to go and what to do.  Of course, I kind of live here part time, but I sure didn't know much. I can tell you where the best antique shops are, though.

Her advice on lunch?  When you go to Chinatown, don't stop on the first block, like a tourist.  Go down a block and over and get deeper into the area.  Seemed to work for us, my lunch was delicious!

Dc with friends 040

Even though we had some gloom and rain, we kept going. We didn't get too wet.  And luckily, we changed our schedule to go and see the Portrait Gallery before the Haulocast Museum. Because if not, we'd have been there during the tragic shooting.  That is the stuff that nightmares are made of.

Dc with friends 033

No tragedies in our group! Even Jen's lost wedding ring turned up in her suitcase later on.  My husband had to go out of town at the last minute, so it was just us girls. We stayed up late, sipping wine and telling stories all night.  Now, to me, that is the best part.  It doesn't matter what location you are in, where the trip takes you, it is who you are with that counts.

Dc with friends 039

While we were exploring the Adam Morgan (?) district -in a down pour that kept us from seeing too much- we did get to see some Hollywood set crew guys taking down a scene from a movie being filmed there.  I guess we were a bit late to see Reese Witherspoon, but it was still interesting to watch a fake brick store front being carried away.

DC3

This week has been extra special to me, not only did I get this Girl's Trip with my friends from Lawrence, and the Blogger's Day out in Leesburg with those pals, I had Beth come to hang out too. It was like a Girls Week on steroids, three gatherings  in one!

Dc with friends 060

After dropping off my first set of pals at the airport, I picked up Beth for the 2nd leg of the journey.  We explored Baltimore a bit, drove down to the Wharf and ate crabcakes and walked through Little Italy.

With a GPS, you can go just about anywhere!  I had some time between dropping the first batch of friends off and picking up the 2nd, so I drove around a bit all by myself too.  Then, on the way home from the airport, Beth and I took a little side trip to Kennsington to look at the old Antique District there.

Dc with friends 066

My husband got back in town just in time to take Robin, Beth, and I out to the Tower Club for an extremely schmancy dinner.  I usually photograph the gorgeous food there, but my new camera is so much bigger and brighter, it seemed a bit obnoxious.  So, my husband reminded me not to disturb the other guests and to be polite.  That isn't easy for me…

Its also not going to be easy for me to get back into a routine of being at home and doing my normal chores, not being wined and dined  daily while giggling with girlfriends.  But, Sugawings is around and I have a feeling there will be plenty of girly gigglling time with her!

I’m shallow and I admit it

antiques/junking, Moving to DC, Travel

Redos from dc trip

Wow, how much fun can you jam into a week away? Enough that when all the running around stopped, I slept for about 12 hours straight last night! And today is a day of goofing off and that is about all.  Since I don't fly home until tomorrow, and I have literally shopped till I dropped, and seen all the sights to see, today I am not doing much of anything but staying at the computer in the apartment.

I've been exploring Picassa as an editing tool and learned how to make a collage!!!

IMG_1197

On the way to taking Beth to the airport in Baltimore so she could fly back to Kansas City, we started early and made a few side trips.  I'd heard a lot about "Accessories of Old" in Bethesda, but had never been out there yet.

IMG_1200

Now, I had a great time exploring DC with my friends earlier in the week, and seeing all the monuments and museums. BUT- to me, this stuff was every bit as full of history as that was!  Am I shallow? Or ignorant? Well, possibly, but I sure loved being surrounded by all these old, beautiful things in this shop a lot more than looking at the Washington Monument.

IMG_1208

Yes, I'll have to admit, I am not very deep.  All I need is something pretty to look at and I am happy. Add a touch of sparkle and I am thrilled.

IMG_1210

Everything in the store is OLD stock, that was stored and never, ever used.  Some of it looks brand new, it is in such good shape. Not just some of it, most of it.  I'm used to seeing worn out, dog eared button cards at flea markets and antique stores. Not brand spanking new, straight from the factory cards that have never been messed with, but are still about 100 years old.

IMG_1211

That is how I love to see history!

IMG_1216

Its lucky that Beth had to get to the airport, or I'd probably still be sitting on the floor in that shop going through bins of trinkets.

IMG_1218

They had everything, from buttons and trims to jewels and supplies.  I was enthralled by it all.

IMG_1222

As a painter, I really did appreciate spending time in the National Portrait Gallery in DC, and going to museums. So, I am not completely uncultured.  Although, my very favorite part of the city was some extremely old flocked wallpaper on the walls of a store we stopped into.  But in my defense, that was paper like I'd never seen anywhere, a real heavy velvet, not a typical flocking!!!!

IMG_1225

Next time I go back to Embellishments of Old, I'll be picking up a few of these to dress up a sweater for Sugarwings.  There was even one with a Big Bad Wolf, one of her favorite characters.  That girl loves the spooky parts of stories, and always prefers the wolf to Red Riding Hood.  She is also crazy about the Wicked Witch of the West, but not more so than Dorothy. In Sugarwing's world, Dorothy is the biggest star on the planet, and Ariel is right after her.

IMG_1192

On our way to Bethesda, we stopped at Sue's yard sale.  She gave us some spectacular deals and I found a pile of cute stuff.

IMG_1194

I wished this $20 chair would have fit in my suitcase.

Driving between Arlington and Bethesda, we saw some beautiful scenery. The GPS took us on a round about way, through some old neighbor hoods we would have missed if we'd stayed on the interstates.  That kind of sight seeing is one of my favorite things to do.  Its much more likely for me to drive around an old neighbor hood and explore there than poke around a museum when I travel.  I like to think of it as "living history". But on the other hand, maybe I am just not very deep….

PS- I learned how to make a mosaic just in time to join "Mosaic Monday" at Mary's. She has a list of links to other mosaics that you can check out too.

What a fun group!  Here we are in front of Prom Dress Central, other wise known as the "Anti- Hope Room", (Hope is such a funny person to be with, and she came up with that name, since it is pretty over whelmingly beautifully stocked with froof, and she doesn't care for that stuff)

We were at On a Whim, a place of pink polka dot loveliness (that I don't have the web address for right now, sorry).  One room there is nothing but vintage gowns and hats.  I've been there before and have made the appropriate sqeally noises when I first saw the room, so really enjoyed listening as each new person came in and saw it all for the first time.  There might have been a happy squeal or two…

The owner, Donna Trexler has done a breath taking, squeal producing job of displaying her gowns.

IMG_1164

And her HATS!!!!!  I was in love with the hats!!

IMG_1168-1

What better backdrop for a group photo of this group?

By the way, I am loving my new camera!  I'm getting used to it, and learning a few tricks.  Plus, I downloaded Picassa photo editing and have had a chance to experiment with that.  I'd love to learn how to add tint to a sepia photo, wouldn't it be pretty if I had been able to add a blush of pink to the roses in this one?

IMG_1178

The Cottage ( www.cottageatleesburg.com ) was  as cute as a bug, just as its welcoming front porch implied.

IMG_1174

There was lots to talk about all day, and you might think it was complicated for a big group to shop together, but we all had such similar interests we had an easy time staying together while we poked around here and there in Leesburg.  There was time to mingle and talk one on one too, and talking to Amy and Andrea and hearing about thier toddlers helped my homesickness about missing Sugarwings(only 4 more days till I get to hold my little Fairy Grand Baby again!!)

IMG_1154

Here is Andrea, Hope, and Amy.  I've met them all at Silver Bella, but never really got a chance to spend time with Hope or Amy till yesterday, and am so glad I got a chance to hang with them both.

This year have been lucky enough to get to visit with Andrea once in April, then again in May, and now here in June. We both have husbands that travel a lot, and she joked that we might see each other more than we see them.

Amy has invited me to come to a craft day at her home when I "head" back this way again.  Can't wait.

IMG_1181

Most of the things that I was really attracted to, like this statue, weren't feasible for my suitcase. I guess the shopping part of the day was more for social than for buying purposes for me.  The stores in Leesburg will always be some of my faves, but on this day, I was too busy chatting to be seriously shopping.

IMG_1184

Although, this little guy might have fit into my suitcase…

IMG_1187

We did manage to buy a few goodies, and Pamela provided the cutest travel folders filled with pockets for receipts, business cards and custom tags with our names on them to tie onto our shopping bags so we could tell whose was whose.  When Beth, Robin, and I loaded my trunk, Beth saw this and said we had to snap a picture of the tagged loot.

If you travel with bloggers, there is one photo op after another!

I'll have some pictures of the little (did I really say little? I meant extravagant and generous) gift exchange as well as the haul from shopping later on.

IMG_1155

Thanks, Heather for pulling it all together for us to meet!  What a fun group, and a beautiful day.

Back Pain Relief Recipe

antiques/junking, how to's, show and tell, vintage paper/collage art

Saturday 002

Before I hurt my back this week while on vacation, I started a few tags.  I was thinking about making some tag books, but decided that these wouldn't fit into the binder with all the 3-D stuff on them, I'll need to add doodads after binding the tags, not before.

Saturday 003

These colors are a bit different from what I usually pick out.  Beth and I have a Wallpaper Pact, when one of us scores some vintage paper, we share with the other.  She gave me the border that I used across the bottom, and if went perfectly with a playing card I got in the En Le Jardin swap.

When my back cooperates and I can sit at my desk again, I'll be adding ribbons to these and calling them finished. Then, I'll start over on the tag books. So, this batch isn't exactly a waste of time.  I just about always finish what I start and make it work somehow.

Saturday 006

This is the statue that I bought from Carol.  For now, she is gracing one of the dining room tables in my studio. I might bring her into the living room later on.   I already have a couple in there now, and I do think a collection makes more impact when it is grouped together, but on the other hand, I like having my favorite things all around me.  So, maybe she'll stay out here in the studio to keep me company while I work.

Saturday 007

Last Saturday, at the world's greatest estate sale, I found this punch bowl. I've been wanting one forever, but didn't want to spend much. This one is cracked, so it was cheap, only 5 bucks. I don't mind the crack, since I am using it for something that won't leak, not punch.

Saturday 013

There was also a giant box of cushion sized slip covers at the sale, and they were only $7.50!  I immediately put some on my porch furniture.  The rest got washed up and look even better. The pink background shows up a lot prettier when it isn't dirty.  I'm not quite sure what I'll do with the rest of them, its gorgeous fabric, some of the prettiest that I have found.  And while it isn't old-old, it is older. Hmm, does that make sense to you?  Not antiquey old like bark cloth, but not made all that recently either.

Saturday 015

There were a few round pillows in the box too.  And I almost didn't buy any of it, I wasn't sure if the size was something I could use, but Beth told me that the fabric was worth a lot more than $7 to have for cutting up.  She's right, I'm glad I listened.

Notice these photos are focused only on the chairs? I've not done any planting and my porch looks desolate and lonely without flowers!   Of course, with a sore back, I won't be doing much gardening this weekend, so it might be a while before I get plants set out.

Toys 005

Years ago, I fell off a pony and fractured a couple of vertebrae.  Now, I wasn't thrown from a horse, I just carelessly slid off the back of a small pony.  Like a klutz, nothing dramatic about it.

I had a few surgeries, cortisone epidurals, lots of rest.  But, I was in bad shape for a LONG time, till I finally found a Dr. who got me to physical therapy.  Since then, I've controlled the back problems by sort of keeping in shape. Not the kind where I look good, but the kind where I stay flexible and can move.

There is also a routine I go through if my back gets sore and it usually works in a day or two, I no longer have months of pain like before.  My trouble now, is that my back went out on me while on vacation and I didn't follow my recipe for healing, since, not only was I staying at a hotel, we were sightseeing and hauling around a 2-1/2 year old.

Here is what I usually do, and am doing now. It doesn't work as well if you don't do it right when injured, but it still helps:

Back Pain Relief Recipe

Equal parts of rest, laying and sitting. Do not stay in one position too long.

Equal amounts of ice and heat, taking turns with each.

Walking and stretching in small amounts to start with, then building up to more.  DO NOT rest too much, you have to MOVE or you'll cramp up.

And last, anti-inflamatories and muscle relaxers.  I use Ibuprofen and Skelaxion, neither make me drowsy.

You will also need a stack of movies to watch.  I'm going to go watch Diary of the Dead, it seems fitting, since I have the zombie shuffle walk going on right now.

And for now, I have probably sat too long at the computer, I need to walk and stretch. But before I go, I'll tell you the winner of the Cottage Charm giveaway, my May prize. Thanks, Kim, for hosting this annual event!

Visting Carol and maybe Caroline

antiques/junking, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, Travel

Estate sales and matt 012

Beth and her husband treated my husband and I to dinner out on Friday night! It was such fun, but like many "double dates" after a while the guys talked golf and we started talking junk.  Then, we realized that dinner was over and we still had a lot to say, so we made plans to continue the conversation Saturday morning at estate sales.

Beth took me to the world's BEST Estate sale in Kansas City.  The BEST.  Everything was exactly to my taste and style and the prices were reasonable. Luckily, it was the second day and the good prices were cut in half. Sadly, because it was the 2nd day, most of it was gone.   I still seemed to manage to get some things that I just love (sorry, no pics right now of these- you probably wonder why I even am yammering on about it if I am not going to show you stuff, huh? I'm just still excited, it was such a fun day out.)

Estate sales and matt 024

Not only was the estate sale a blast, (who wouldn't want to wander around in a Shabby Chic, French style, antique filled palace and shop at garage sale prices???) but the whole day was fun. My couple of hours turned into all day, and we went to visit our pal, Carol at Raised in Cotton.

(these pictures are from her shop)

Estate sales and matt 007

This is a bit embarrassing to admit, it was my first trip to her store.  She is a treasured friend, and has been my roomie on a couple of trips. We email chat constantly, but Raised in Cotton is on the other side of Kansas City and I just never get that far.

Estate sales and matt 017

But, now that I have seen it, I'll be making the trip again. I loved everything about it, and saw lots of things I wanted.

Estate sales and matt 015

Maybe I get too attached to my purchases?? I'm falling for statues now, and have started a collection. I was thrilled to find one here! Have you ever noticed how hard it is to find one of these girls with a pretty face? Often the faces are flat looking or the girl has feet like a man.  Why is that always happening with these 50's and 60's ladies?  I see it all the time.  But this girl is a dainty one and I just love her.

I also bought the vintage lace shirt.  Its a bit snug, but I'll wear it unbuttoned. (I know this is a BAD photo, makeup from the night before, bed head and a red nose. No, I am not a drunk, wasn't hung over. I just left for garage sales at 7am and am not a morning person)

Earrings 008

We are doing our Memorial Day weekend a bit backwards. I worked all day Sunday, adding some items to the boutique, and cleaning the studio. Then on Monday, we are taking off on a trip.  My handsome husband and I are packing up the fairy grand baby and all her paraphernalia and heading to Sioux City, Iowa to see family.

Earrings 026

We hope to stop at the Omaha Zoo on the way home, weather permitting.  If all goes well, on this long trip with a toddler, we might go to Florida next weekend.  The baby is staying with us for a couple of weeks while her Hippy Chick mom is vacationing, and we are using the time to do as many fun things as we can.

Earrings 017

Although, our reason for the trip to Florida is not so fun. My Great Aunt Caroline is in hospice care now.  She will turn 101 at the end of June and knowing her will, she will make it and will probably keep on going till 102. But… I can't help but worry.

2630663235_1d683df9e5

Last year, blog readers generously made 100 cards for her 100th birthday, and she was so touched!

I'm hoping a little dose of Sugarwings will be good for her, so we are tentatively planning a trip down to Howie in the Hills, Florida to see Caroline.  She is the best story teller I have ever met,  and I'd love for my little fairy grand baby to hear one of her tales.

But for now, off to pack and get ready for Sioux City!

How to paint furniture (the short cut way)

antiques/junking, Hand Painted Furniture, how to's, how-to projects

Cabinet redo 073

For years, I had an antique furniture painting business and painted hundreds of pieces of furniture. I spent a lot of time figuring out an easier way to do it.

This tutorial is for painting old furniture and keeping an old feel to it, with NO sanding and NO stripping. Ugh, who wants to work that hard?

Birthday 09 051

Of course, having an assistant helps.

Cabinet redo 041

Since this cabinet had glass doors, I covered the glass with newspaper before starting, and set up the piece in an area where I could spray paint and not worry about the mess.

Cabinet redo 043

Old furniture comes with many defects time has added to its finish. Personally, that is what I love about it.  If I wanted something to look new, I'd buy a brand new piece. I want my antiques to keep their flavor!  So, I don't want to sand away any alligatoring of the old varnish, or any other interesting bits on it.

By using a bonding spray, you do not need to sand or strip the furniture and you preserve those crackly spots in the varnish.

Cabinet redo 044

This BONDING primer (bonding is the key word, here, it will stick to any clean surface without sanding) covers the old varnish, but doesn't change the look of the finish underneath. SHAKE WELL or you'll get a bumpy grainy finish.

Cabinet redo 045

Spray away.

We've already skipped sanding, and now here is where another short cut comes in.

If you plan on painting the piece with a brush after priming, you can leave it the way this cabinet looks right now, kind of shadowy, that is good enough coverage for the paint to adhere.

But, if you are going to do what I do and skip the step where you brush on paint, then you need to use plenty of spray primer.

It took me 2-1/2 cans for this piece.  After it was at the shadowy point in this photo, I sprayed over any darker areas and made sure there was good coverage.

Cabinet redo 046

Did I mention how much it helps to have assistants?  I gave this one an empty can to help with.  I'm glad it was empty, because she tried to spray paint the world with it.  If she ever gets hold of a full can, I might be in trouble.

Cabinet redo 049

Primer MUST NOT be left without a top coat. But, who says you have to use just plain paint over it?? I use water based glaze, which is mixed with latex paint.  It covers the primer just like paint would, but is semi-transparent, depending upon how much color you add.

You can buy it pre-mixed like this kind, which is handy for large projects, but can be pricey.

Cabinet redo 051

Or you can buy glaze by the can, and mix your own color.  I use those cheapo 2 oz craft bottles of acrylic paint. There are a ton of color choices that way.

Cabinet redo 053

This is really too much for the cabinet, but I liked this color and wanted to make extra to store for something else.  It never hurts to make up a bit extra, because you'd hate to run out in the middle of glazing your furniture.

I'd say 2 cups of glaze and 1 ounce of craft paint (any color, any brand) is plenty.

IMG_2910

I love these cheap-o brushes, they a good for getting down into the crevaces.

Cabinet redo 054

The color I chose was a dark brown.  Notice how it looks more like chocolate milk after it is brushed on?  Well, that is because the glaze is milky.  But you have to remember that the glaze will dry CLEAR.  So the color of the small acrylic craft paint  you chose is what you end up with, not the milky version it is while still wet!!

Cabinet redo 055

Start at the top and work on one small area at a time.  Paint the colored glaze on thickly, and get it down into all grooves.  After one section is painted, wipe it off with a wet, soft rag.

I use old tee shirts, and keep a bucket of warm water nearby for rinsing. Not that warm water is better than cold, but it just feels better when you wring the rag out.

And rinse often!!  Your rag will fill with glaze fast. If you don't keep rinsing and wringing it out, you'll have a soppy mess and will just be pushing the glaze around, not removing it.

Cabinet redo 057

Don't worry about perfection.  Some areas will be more heavily glazed than others, that makes for an interesting finish. And if you were lucky enough to have a piece of furniture with lots of crackled finish to start with, then the glaze will really look nice when it settles into those cracks!

Cabinet redo 065

While the glass is still covered with paper, spray a can of satin finish clear coat over the project to seal it.

IMG_2911

Or you can brush on a water based top coat.

After you take off the newspaper and tape, you might have to scrape a little paint off the window here and there with a razor blade, if you tape as badly as I do.

I chose not to paint the interior of mine, instead I lined it with vintage wallpaper.

HINTS

  • You can skip the paint step, IF- you are fine with using bright white as your base color under the glaze. Spray primer doesn't come in tinted colors.  You can also use paint on bonding primer, and have it tinted, or use the gray it comes in, and that can be your base coat.
  • You MUST cover every inch of the primed areas with painted on glaze! Primer is not meant to be left uncovered.  But glaze is quicker and easier to brush on than paint, because you are just slopping it on heavy and will be wiping it off.
  • Top coats are important, for durability. You can quickly spray one, or brush it on. If I am brushing it on, I like to use Min-Wax Polycrylic.  It is water based, no smell.
  • Make sure the piece is clean before you paint it.   Wipe it down with a damp cloth, and if it is greasy use Windex.
  • Only use BONDING  primer!!  Be sure the label says something like "will stick to glossy surfaces".  I buy this brand at Home Depot.  If I am brushing on primer instead, I use "The Gripper" by Glidden.
  • Primer can be painted over soon after using it, but sometimes it takes days to "cure".  So, if you have painted something with an extremely high gloss finish, try to leave it set and don't mess with it for 3 or 4 days.  The finish hardens, and won't scrape up after that.
  • Its nice to paint the inside of drawers, for a clean finish, but NEVER, ever paint the sides of the drawers, on the outside, or the bottoms.  They must be kept clear of paint so the drawers won't stick.  For an old, sticky piece, wax the outside of the drawers for a good slide.
  • If you get over spray on the glass, like I did, scrape it off right away, or it just gets harder to do. Bonding primer bonds!
  • If you have plans to "distress" the piece, by roughing the edges up with sand paper, do it before your top coat.  And don't wait too long, like I mentioned before bonding primer bonds!  When the furniture is dry, sand away, but don't wait days and days or you'll have trouble sanding through the primer to the wood underneath.

It was pointed out to me that spray paint is dangerous to inhale and I didn't mention safety precautions.  Please, use proper ventalation!  I use the garage, but am right inside the open double doors.  Also, the baby only was playing with an empty can, she was not actually involved with spraying or breathing in the spray.  I treasure each and every one of her brain cells!

Birthday 09 009

Thanks for all your happy birthday wishes! It was a fun day, I invited some pals over for a tee shirt embellishment day and for birthday cake.  There were some issues with the transfer paper, we never did figure it out. But I had bought a bunch of different types of printable fabrics to try too, and those worked out well.  For this brown tee, I added a copy of one of my favorite vintage paintings, then some velvet and lace trim under it.  To finish off, it got old seam binding around the neck. The shirt is Lycra, so I stretched it as far as I could and straight stitched the ribbon to the neckline. When I let go of the pulled fabric, the ribbon ruffled just like I hoped that it would!

Everyone brought their own shirts or bags to work on, and then I had an assortment of goodies for them to go through and add to them, as well as a bunch of pictures I had downloaded and printed onto fabric.  Of course, nothing was exactly right for what they needed, and we spent most of the day going through my supplies and my folders of images to see what they wanted to use for their pieces.  Isn't that how it always goes? The stuff set aside for a project is never quite what you want, something buried or squirreled away is much more intriguing.

Birthday 09 036

The crystals and glitter pens were popular though. Well, dur! Of course crystals are great to use!!

After the group left for the day, I sat down and worked on a couple shirts for myself, it had been hectic earlier with so much going on and I wanted to wear a new shirt when my boys and I went out for dinner.  Ryan and Sugarwing's Daddy took me to my favorite Italian place, then we went to see Wolverine.   Hugh was my favorite Xman before, but after this movie, I love him even more!  And Ryan Reynolds is a fave of mine too, so it was fun to see Van Helsing take on Van Wilder.

 Birthday 09 030

Thanks also for your get well wishes for poor little Twinkle's toes.  She is no longer whining and whimpering, and is back to running around, so I'd say she is feeling better.

Birthday 09 053

Especially after a visit from one of her puppies, Bella.

Birthday 09 068

Sugarwings (who by the way, is an excellent helper when it is time to blow out birthday candles) was glad to see Bella too.

Are you noticing anything different about my blog today?

Guess what came as my birthday gift! The CANNON REBEL!!!!!!!!!  yep, that one. The one I've whined about and wished for.  And you know who gave it to me?  I did.

The best way to have a wonderful birthday is to throw it for yourself.  I bought a cake, invited friends over for a craft day, supplied the crafts, picked out the restaurant and movie to to take my sons to, and bought the gift I wanted for the last year.  The perfect birthday, perfectly orchestrated by me.   Everyone was happy to have the burden of what to do for mom lifted from them and I had exactly what I wanted. Now, why did it take me 51 birthdays to figure that out?  I guess wisdom comes with age.

Birthday 09 069

Good camera, huh? What a nice gift!!!

Sparks 09 062

I realized that I never showed you the goods that I bought last week at the flea mkt, so I'll leave you with a few photos from my OLD camera of my finds.

Sparks 09 060

Can you see the difference?

Sparks 09 064

Now, that wasn't a horrid camera, and I will still be using it quite a bit. It fits so nicely into my jeans pocket.  But I love my new Rebel XSi!!!

Sparks 09 063

Well, that photo sure isn't very good. I wonder what makes me show them any way, when I know they are bad?

Sparks 09 076

Last week's shopping trip was a day for figurines and babies, as well as millinery and jewels.  Lots of small things, I liked not having much to carry in at the end of the day.

Before I go, I need to announce the hand painted Birthday Cupcake Charm-

Claudia

And to say thanks again for helping make my day special with all of your kind comments!

The 3rd Annual Cottage Charm Giveaway

Giveaway2009

This is the 3rd year in a row that I will be participating in the Cottage Charm giveaway, hosted by Kim.

Sparks 09 086

And once again, I am taking it literally and offering a Charm as the Cottage Charm prize!  This one is a hand painted white rose, and it is accented with a genuine pearl.  I've tied it to a mini tag made from vintage papers, but you could add the charm to a necklace or bracelet instead if you'd rather.

Sparks 09 087

I've only been at this blogging life, for a little over two years, but it is fun to see traditions building up and things to look forward to year after year.  Thanks, Kim, for this "charming" tradition!

Sparks 09 094

Plus, you guys know I love giveaways, and I am on a charm kick lately.  Here is the painted cup cake charm that is the gift I'm sharing for my 51st (ouch) birthday tomorrow.  All comments, any post between May 1st and 5th count.  For the Cottage Charm prize, any comment, any post until the 30th counts too.  So, leave as many as you'd like.

I was asked if giveaways help build up my following. Honestly, I don't know if it does. I know I get more comments, and I do enjoy the feedback.  Also, I get a LOT out of blogging and like to give back.  Plus, I make a LOT of crap or find a lot of good junk at great prices and like to share.  Ask any of my non-cyber friends and they'll tell you the same thing.  Its fun to give little pressies!

Good luck, on all the Cottage Charm drawings, there will be tons of fun blogs to hop around to and visit to sign up for wonderful prizes!

Sparks 09 092

We've had a traumatic day here, poor Twinks broke her water dish and had to be put under to get some stitches in foot.  She's still feeling drowsy and is on pain meds for the cut.  I could tell she was really hurt, you should have heard her whimpering, I felt so bad for her. Now, she has a solid, unbreakable, tin water bowl. No more pretty, vintage glass for this dog!

I felt bad for me too, you should have seen the blood everywhere, that I had to clean up. It looked pretty bad.  I'm glad I went in the house to get something and heard her crying, because I'd hate to have let her go on much longer like that, she was really bleeding.  My husband wrapped her foot in a rag and put a rubber band around it like a tourniquet and the vet said that was an excellent idea, and that it helped.

Aren't you glad I didn't take pictures of that mess??

Sparks 09 007

The vintage wallpaper journal kits that I sent to Somerset Life are back now. I'm not sure which issue they will be in, but most likely soon, I'd guess.

Sparks 09 005

Two of the journal kits are listed in the Boutique.

A few more wallpaper packs got added today too.  I'm still wrapping and photographing the rest of the rainbow of wallpaper you saw spread out in the studio a few posts back. And some that have been listed have sold out, but there will be more on the way. Thanks so much for checking in to see what is there!

Sparks 09 068

I'll leave you with a more cheerful picture of poor little Twinkle.  She's posing with Miss Pink Frenchie, who I bought at the flea market last week.

PS- Cindy, at My Romantic Home (who just had her ONE MILLIONTH  visitor, wow!!) is having a May giveaway too, to enter, check HERE

Ironed paper 019

Yesterday, Beth and I headed to Sparks and White Cloud to the flea market we never miss twice a year.  There have been times when it has been chilly, other times when we feel like we have heat stroke.  We've gone when it was drizzling a bit too.

But yesterday, when we left, the forecast was for a 60% possibility of thunderstorms all day and it was raining so hard I could barely see the road.

And I kept driving anyway.  And I decided I will never again tease my husband when he gets all bundled up to go to an outdoor sporting event in blizzardy weather. I had always thought he was crazy.  But now, I get it.  The pluses out weigh the minuses, and it was worth it to me to brave the weather, just in case there was a break in it and we could do some fun shopping.

Ironed paper 020

Luckily, the weather cleared! We had some minor drizzle here and there, and our shoes were muddy from walking in the fields, but the day was GREAT.  We always have a blast there, and say that it isn't just shopping, it is an event. So we figured it  was worth the risk of getting a little wet.

Ironed paper 022

And if the only thing I bought all day was these posies, it would have been worth getting really muddy.  (but of course I bought more. Much more.)

These were marked $4 each.  I asked (very nicely) how much it would be if I bought all of them, and was thrilled to hear that they could go for 50 cents each if I bought the bowlful. I always say, it never hurts to ask.

Since, I was at Sparks all day yesterday, I wasn't able to list more wallpaper yet. I did add a few packs to my Boutique the night before and many have already sold out.   Today, I had Sugarwings to keep me busy, and tomorrow I am helping at a fund raising garage sale for some friends.  I hope to add more packs and will let you know when I do.

Ironed paper 017

Isn't this vintage greeting card beautiful?  It is actually on a flocked paper background! I had 3 of them, one I kept for myself and two I made up wallpaper packs to coordinate with.

Ironed paper 011

Well, that garage sale is going to come pretty early tomorrow, I'd better get to bed, now that I finally have Sugarwings tucked in. She is at a stage when she thinks she'd rather stay up and play, not go to bed, and sees no reason why she shouldn't just do what ever she wants.  So, tucking in has become a marathon event around here.
