My Own Birthday fun

celebrations, family

IMG_1037

This year, I had quite a birthday.  It was such a jam packed week of celebrating, that I've probably used up my quota of birthday fun for the next few years.  Seems like there was one special thing after another, it was really something.  If  my birthday gets forgotten in the future, that is just fine because I got more than my fair share of celebrating this May!

Caike baked a white chocolate flourless cake, Thia made a sculptured edible rose to go on top of it.  My husband's boss sent flowers! Honey had puppies.  The whole family came over and Adam treated me to a wonderful shrimp and pasta dinner that I didn't have to help cook., then he gave me some new paint brushes too.

IMG_1990

Some dear Birdsong friends took me out to lunch, cupcakes, and shopping, Tami even made this necklace for me. (notice the little birdie?)

IMG_1052

My friend, Shanna, made a fairy garden, and sweet treats for her craft day party.  Earlier in the week, a group of friends had me over for a dinner party.  Ryan took me out for pizza another night. the little grand fairies and I went out to the T Rex cafe for a big meal to make use of the $25 gift card that the Landry's club gives on every birthday if you sign up for a membership, and I bought myself a tee shirt with the $10 that Kohls gives out on birthdays.  I still have a free popcorn coming from the movie theater and I will not let that go to waste.

Cards came in the mail, too.

IMG_2008

From the family, I got the mixer I'd been wanting for years and years.

IMG_2011

I was kind of overwhelmed by it all.  Yep, it was the best!

Mother’s Day

celebrations, family

IMG_1148

Our Mother's Day was a full one, with a cottage brimming with loved ones.

18425089_10155121809055803_3682110337507329036_n

Miss Tree's mom, aunt, grandma, and dad, along with my husband's brother and many of his family joined our regular bunch of kids and grand fairies, for a pretty, spring day to hold puppies and feast on a big Mother's Day lunch.

I don't think those pups were in their nest for more than time to nurse, throughout the day.

IMG_1145

Before everyone arrived, Sugarwings whispered an idea in PopPop's ear- they should mow the word,"MOM" into the field.

IMG_1142

The O was even a heart!

Sweet, huh?  I hope your day was special too.

Adventuring with Grand Fairies- tips and tricks for Disney with little girls

celebrations, Dew Drop, Sugarwings, Travel

IMG_1664

The Grand Fairies and I went on an adventure.

1IMG_0557

The 3 of us flew to Orlando together and spent a couple of days at Disneyworld.  I was impressed with how smoothly it all went, considering it was spring break time, and we weren't the only ones who had the idea of going there then.

IMG_0590

There were a few struggles, but nothing we couldn't handle.

Lost rental car keys? Take a bus. (There is great, free transportation from the Disney hotels to the park, it was actually easier than driving)

Chilly weather? Lots of layers. Lots.

Bag too heavy? Rent a stroller to carry it.

Kids too tired? Trade that single stroller in for a double and push those kids around, remembering to call it a carriage, NOT a stroller. Who cares if they are "too old" to be in one, it made the day much more pleasant for us all, and those strollers glide so easily, that it was no problem for me to manage it. It was actually more convenient to have the girls seated together as the day progressed and the crowds grew larger and larger and larger and larger.

Crowded restaurants at lunch time? Find a kids' zone to color in and wait til it clears.  Patience and distractions got us through wait times, along with a bag full of snacks, and water bottles.

.IMG_1707

We took breaks and kept it as chill as we could.  We arrived early to our scheduled events, like our dinner at Cinderella's castle, and read books or played games on ipads to rest up before the party started.  For the "Wishes" fireworks show, we found a cozy spot with a family chock full of little girls nearby and hung out for an hour before the show began, for a perfect view, enjoying just BEING there, while making friends.

Our sidewalk neighbors were Muslim (I'm guessing on this) and didn't speak English, I'm not sure where they were visiting from, but I got a kick out of watching Dewdrop befriend them, even with a language barrier.  They were joined by a couple Hispanic girls behind us, and it became a little United Nations of princess talk and giggles.

One trick I regret not using on this trip, was watching the parade from Frontierland instead of Main Street. It begins in Frontierland and the crowds are much smaller there.  We didn't have a good view this time, and it was my own fault for not getting to a good spot early. Because it is hard to see the show if you haven't staked out a place ahead of time.

IMG_1712

My thought is that a trip to Mickey's place isn't a contest to see how much you can do to "get your money's worth", a day in the park is meant to be completely enjoyable and fun, not rushed and crazy.

I plan ahead as much as I can to make the most of the time, but we leave plenty of space for just plain old sightseeing, hanging out, and rolling with the day.   We spent the entire day in Fantasy Land and Tomorrow Land, without seeing a single other area, and didn't care. So what if we didn't see it all in one day?

What we saw, and what we did was amazing!

IMG_0560

My biggest tip for a good day at the park is to make the most of fast passes and use the Disney park ap on your phone to keep them updated, as you use them up, you can book more. Also you can check wait times on all rides so you know where you can get in quickly without waiting for crowds.  We never waited more than 10-15 minutes throughout the day, unless we were purposely taking a break.

IMG_1716

And if you can't get reservations for the meals you want, keep trying. Even during spring break's larger than usual crowds, we were able to dine at Cinderella's Castle as well as in Belle's.  Both were full up when I first checked, but I made a point of looking online for openings periodically the month before we left and eventually, spots opened up both places we wanted to go.

(okay, I admit that I was a bit obsessed with that, and some days, I checked the dining reservation site 5 times a day)

IMG_1661

Another tip that I found helpful was dressing the girls alike.  I dread the day they won't let me do this anymore, because it sure makes it easier to find them in crowds.  I always make sure I am wearing something colorful myself, so they can spot me easily too.  When they get too sophisticated for twin outfits, maybe we will all chose a family color to wear when we go to zoos or amusement parks.

I have never splurged on taking the girls to the Bippity Boppity Boo salon, but I do buy them each a new dress for our visits.  Kohls has the cutest Disney lines of clothes, and with their sale prices, I got two dresses from the Beauty and Beast collection that will be worn over and over and over for much less than I'd have paid for a gown from the salon.  And I knew the girls would be comfortable for the day. Some of those gowns that are sold in the park are too flimsy to be warm in the early mornings and after dark, but look hot in the middle of the day when the sun is out.

We went on St Pat's day, and I checked out the Dollar Spot at Target before we left for some light up necklaces and crowns to celebrate in an affordable way.  We also packed glo-sticks from the dollar store to give us some sparkle once night time came.

IMG_1671 IMG_1682IMG_1673

If you want to get into the park early to get decent photos of the castle before Main Street becomes shoulder to shoulder traffic, you should go early and be there when it opens (or before).  We were lucky that the Extra Magic Hours (a free hour to go early or stay late at a park) happened to co-inside with Magic Kingdom that day.   Sometimes the park that has the Magic Hours isn't the one you have tickets to, they change daily.  And you have to stay at a Disney hotel to get that free hour.

Or you can book a reservation at a restaurant in the park, for an early breakfast and get in early that way.  When you go early, you can often walk right onto rides, no line at all.

IMG_1686

We had no waits at all for Winnie the Poo, Small World, and the merry go round, all in about 35-40 minutes or so.   We even rode Small World twice. And you are welcome for the gift of that song in your head for the rest of the day, it is still in mine, we rode it later that day too. Twice. Yes, it will be in my head til the end of time after that, but I kinda like it, so didn't mind.

Here is another tip- if your kids are into gymnastics, and trapeze like mine are, please council them before getting on the carousel about not standing up and doing tricks on the horses.

The operator stopped the ride to talk to these two after they were caught showing off their circus skills as the ponies went round and round.  And funny enough, they hold the ride up for a LONG time talking to the kids, they didn't simply tell them not to do it, or to get off. I was surprised by the length of the lecture.  Or did it just seem like it was forever because they were all pointing to me in the crowd as the reprimand was going on?

IMG_0556

A lot of time waiting can be spent looking for Hidden Mickeys too. I don't know if this counts as one, but it was delicious anyway.

This was the first time we used the Disney dining plan, we chose "quick service" which is the lower end one.  And we were not able to use it for the upper priced meal at Cinderella's castle, so we had extra meals on it. The quick service plan was honored at Belle's castle tho, and the meal even came with this bonus tray of pastries.

We also shared two meals three ways a couple of times.  And didn't really buy much in the way of snacks.  So, was purchasing the meal plan worth it? Well, it ended up being so for us, because we met up with Dewdrop's mama the day after we went to Magic Kingdom and I paid for them to go to Animal Kingdom together, and the credits on the meal plan carried over for them to use.  The points were good until midnight the day you check out of the hotel and could be used at Disney Springs too. Sugarwings and I went there to hang out, had some dinner, and bought snacks to go to use up some of the credits.  We ate caramel apples at our beach hotel for the next couple of days.

But for just one adult and two little fairies, for just two days, it wouldn't have been a good deal,  it was too much food for the three of us.  I don't know if I'd do it again or not.

17352465_10155064479194477_3061806399734434343_n

Check out was at 11, and we were able to get a later one, (request a later check out upon checkin, don't wait!) so we spent time at the pool at our hotel, then spent the rest of the day at Disney Springs, seeing Beauty and the Beast and having dinner.  That gave us an extra day to use up the meal plan, and we shared it with Dewdrop's mama, but it was still hard to finish up all of the credits without stuffing ourselves.

Here is something I learned about the dining plan we were on.  10 years old is ADULT PRICED!  But- when I used the dining plan, it wasn't divided up between "adult" or "child" meals. There were two credits each, each day for just a meal, plus snack credits and a refill cup good for use at the hotel only, but it was great for refilling with ice water- free at any counter service restaurant.

We could order two adult meals and split them three ways, and could order the highest priced meals on the quick serve menu.

BUT- you have to purchase a meal plan for each person in your hotel room. So, the only way I see doing this again would be if I had two separate hotel rooms, and we shared a meal plan somehow. Or once the kiddos are older and eat more, it would be worth it. For now? Not for us.

IMG_0543

We stayed at one of the "value" priced hotels and it ended up being the favorite of any we'd been at. At least from the kiddos point of view. (I've stayed at the Animal Kingdom resort with my sis, Terry, and I can't say any hotel anywhere is better than that one!)

This one, Art of Animation, was over the top gaudy, bright, fun, and full of 3 story high characters the kids love. So, it was an ideal choice, was much less expensive than any of the other hotels I've stayed in there, and it made the grand fairies VERY happy.  The pools were such fun that we wished we had more time to stay there.  The hotel itself was a blast for the littles, although it might have been a bit much if my husband had come along.

It was at least $150 less per night than the medium value hotel we usually go to (Caribbean Beach).  That alone was good for me, the girls loved the Ariel decor, and the bus to the Magic Kingdom was direct and quick.

IMG_0585

A tip I got from my sis, the Disney master (Terry) is to get a fast pass to see Belle's tales.  It is a cute, interactive play and every child gets to be in it, meet Belle, and get a free book mark.  That is much more interesting than simply standing in line to meet a princess.

IMG_1723

If you do a character meet and greet or one of their meals, pick up a note book from the Dollar Spot at Target, or somewhere else with bargain prices so the kids can collect autographs.  No reason to buy one for $10 or more at the park. And Target has Disney themed books that are every bit as cute.  My girls saved the signature pages to make a scrap book with the photos I took of them meeting their royal friends.

IMG_1693

Here is another tip- pick up extra maps, they get torn up, lost, and fought over if you don't.  No reason to play tug of war with one if there is an unending supply.

Another activity to keep busy between rides is Pin Trading.  The grand fairies like doing it so much, they even traded back and forth with each other all day.

IMG_1710

We had the best time with our stay. I wish it could be longer, I've never taken the little ones when we could go to the park more than one day, the timing just never works out for us. This time, we had an afternoon and evening at the hotel, then a day at the park, and another night at the hotel, then a late check out.

Here is another tip- don't over do it!

We probably could've squeezed in one more day at a park before driving to the beach to meet up with my husband after checking out of the hotel.  But, as tempting as it was, I knew I'd be exhausted if I spent another day in one of the parks, then had a two hour drive to get to our beach hotel afterwards.  Hanging out at the pool and at Disney Springs for a couple of hours was ideal for us, plenty more Disney fun, and no more ticket purchases. There are a lot of fun things to do in the area without buying a ticket.

IMG_1688

These are all tips that I've learned after taking children a few times, and I know that I am in no way an expert.  I just wanted to pass on some things I've learned along the way.

Annual visit from the Bluebirds of Happiness!

celebrations, cottage

IMG_1635

I must be on a migration route for these sweeties, because for 4 years in a row, there is one, blessed day when a large flock comes to see me.

IMG_1620

It is often on a snowy day, always at the end of winter, after a nice break in the winter when we have had a glimpse of spring. Then, cold comes back for a few days, and here they come with it, to make me feel better about facing a few more days of freezing temps.

IMG_1627

Usually, I glance out of the window and see a flash of blue, and know it is my lucky day.

IMG_1626

This year, my husband was the one to discover our visitors. He stepped out the door, frightened the flock, and they flew up all at once.  I was afraid they were gone for the day (they don't stay long).

IMG_1636

But after about 15-20 minutes, they settled back in to snack on the dried berries from this overgrown bush.

IMG_1647

They also love the warmed waterer we keep outdoors in the winter for the  cats.

IMG_1657

Maybe they remember that warm water on a cold day and pass the message along each year?

IMG_1651

I feel like I need to read up on these birds, I'd like to find a way to convince them to stay longer.

They eat, drink, rest up for the morning, then are on their way again by afternoon.

IMG_1642

Its quite amazing that I catch the fleeting bit of time that they are here.

It happens so fast and would be so easy to miss. They arrived the day before I packed up for our trip to the beach, it was a close call.  A matter of less then 48 hours difference and I'd have lost the chance to enjoy them this year.  Or if they had come the day before, I'd have been out running errands all day long and wouldn't have seen them.

IMG_1637

How sad, if I'd lost this brief opportunity for my annual blessing of happiness upon our home!

And how blessed I am to catch them on their journey, yet again.

They do bring happiness.

The Phantom and the Pirate

celebrations, family

IMG_0424

My life growing up in Indiana wasn't one where I was exposed to Broadway plays.  I was 40 before I saw my first one, and it was The Phantom of the Opera, at a beautiful theater in San Fransisco.  From that I was hooked, and I've seen a lot of other plays and that same show in St. Louis, NY, and now in Kansas City with my girls.

IMG_0428

Sugarwings and her big sis, Avahni, the circus star, both love listening to the Phantom sound track and wanted to see the show as much as I did.

It makes me very happy to know that these kids are growing up with a head start on appreciating culture.  I hope they are beginning a lifetime love of attending theater, and I'm glad to have a part in developing a love of theater.

We all got dressed up for a big Sunday afternoon out on the town. It was such a special event, that I even wore my Great Aunt Caroline's pearls. If any occasion called for wearing my best jewelry, this was it!

IMG_0413

And Sugarwings looked lovely with her glittered hair style.

Dewdrop is not fond of plays like the rest of us.  She was a bit too young for this particular play anyway,  she stayed home with her daddy. IMG_9355

IMG_9563

She didn't care for the local plays (Cinderella and Rudolf) that I took her to over the holidays, asking to skip on Peter Pan, so I gave her ticket to a friend.

IMG_9560

I 'm taking a step back, and not forcing anything on her.   I will give her some time and see if she'd like to try again when she is older.  Making her sit still through a show she doesn't want to watch is not the way to get her excited about going with us.

Maybe next year, she will be more interested in attending.

IMG_0425

For this trip, I splurged on  seats under the chandelier. Every time I have seen this show, I've been way, way up in the cheap seats and thought to myself how cool it would be to be in the front for that dramatic moment when the chandy drops.

And it was certainly worth it!

Please keep checking back, I do have new stories pre-posted for you to read while I am away. Also, any orders from the Boutique will be shipped on March 28th. Thanks for your patience!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

celebrations, family, holiday decor, We're having a party

IMG_0363

This is one of my favorite days of the year!  It is also the anniversary of the day my husband adopted our boys, so we have made this an anniversary celebration with gifts and parties, instead of the traditional romantic day you'd expect.

IMG_1315

This year, between the work schedules of our group, Sunday night was the time everyone was free for the bash.  (hmmm, maybe I'll get a chance for a traditional, wooing type Valentine night since our family gathering was earlier?)

IMG_0370

At first we were worried that we'd have to cancel, because Dewdrop had been sick. She felt better that day, but was still spotty from a rash.

IMG_0368

We kept her busy making Valentine cards and decorations all day while watching movies and resting. She was up for the party and ready to celebrate when dinner time came.

IMG_1311

She did have to sit out on the food prep, tho.

IMG_1312

Sugarwings made the sliced tomato  and mandarin oranges hearts for our salads. She was also in charge of table setting and decor.

IMG_1318

After my mistake of over doing at Christmas time, I was smart enough to cook the day before for this party.  I'd made a bunch of lasagnas, vegetarian, vegan, and less veggie for the little kids.

IMG_1319

That way, I could just pop them into the oven, no worries, no work. I was able to enjoy the day with the kids, being crafty and hanging out.  And I wasn't frazzled when it was time to sit down and enjoy the meal together.

IMG_1327

We even had time to plan a surprise for the family.  I climbed up on the arm of the sofa, and Sugarwings passed handfuls of confetti to me to put onto the ceiling fan blades.  The girls were also kind enough to share some of their lace paper doily hearts from the craft supply box.

After dinner, before cake and gifts, everyone gathered in a circle to hold hands and sing "Family Together", a song my husband and the kids made up.  I made an excuse to go hit the switch and the confetti floated down on the singers.

If I had it to do over again, I'd use much, much more confetti.  But this is one of those things that would be hard to repeat.  Everyone would see it coming and there couldn't be a big surprise again.

Unless I could fake out someone on a birthday, by having the blades loaded and casually saying something like, "would you please get that cup from the living room for me?" and hitting the switch as they walk under? Hmm, hope none of them read that….

IMG_0364

It was all a big hoot, and if you watch the little video, you can see just how crazy and ramped up it made the kids much the kids loved the prank! It is posted on my FB page.

Best wishes for a fun Valentine to you too! From the little joys to the grand gestures, the sly smiles to the big grins, it's all about the love and about sharing that love with the ones you care about.

edit- I've added the video for you here:

Appreciations

celebrations, jewelry

IMG_0913

Way back in October, I found these large, Larimar beads in Florida.  I bought enough  to make some Christmas gifts, even though it almost drives me to drink to not give out pretties IMMEDIATELY upon purchasing them.

I was soooooo proud of myself for making necklaces in the fall and saving them for Santa time!

This one is made with aquamarine, moonstone, labradorite, mother of pearl, amazonite, and silver.

IMG_0912

These two are designed by Sugarwings for her Hippie Chick Mommy and Mommy's partner.  My girl went with me to the gem show, and spent over an hour finding just the right set of rainbow stones to use for the matching pieces.

I used silver, which was good for most of it, but the jump rings I had were too fine, and not strong enough, the pendants were easily pulled off when the piece snagged on a scarf. I've gathered the faulty gifts back up and have to replace the delicate jump rings that held the pendant on with something sturdier.  oops!

IMG_0915

Jewelry making was just what I needed to make me feel better last fall while I was down after my minor cardiac procedure.  2016 was a year of beading for me, working with my hands was very healing.

IMG_0901

Last spring, when I first had the arrhythmia symptoms,  I'd recently been to the gem show and had a bagful of beads on the dining table.  I felt pretty crappy and didn't want to go out to the studio, so I turned my dining room into a jewelry workshop.

Bracelet after bracelet , necklace after necklace, was made this year, some for myself, some for friends and family.  It was good for me to be able to be creative when I wasn't feeling up to par, and gemstone beads are an addictive item.  The more I made, the more I wanted to make.

IMG_0899

It wasn't practical, I wasn't selling the items.  And I think I gave away at least $500 worth of beads in the pieces that I made.

But making all of this gemmy goodness was sooooo good for me.

My limited energy wasn't allowing me to be up to doing my regular work in the studio, let alone making kits or setting up classes.

Yet, being creative in any way is very important to me.  This little hobby helped me get through some tired times and cheered me up.

IMG_0903

Oh, I don't want to make it sound like I was a complete invalid, I'm fine, the whole cardiac thing was minor.  I'm very, very fine, I was just feeling down for a matter of weeks multiple times over the past year.

Enough that between feeling yucky or being busy with our remodeling project, my business was put on hold. So, I am grateful to have had an outlet to keep my hands busy with pretty things that uplifted my weirdly, thumping heart.

2016 was jammed with wonderful moments, smiles, and loveliness.  And I'm lucky that my health problems were as minor as they were.  (I'm beyond very, very fine now, and my heart has not done any odd pitter pattering since I had the repair job done).  Having those issues makes me appreciate my creative energy and not take it for granted.  Being out of commission art-wise, can be as heart breaking as having a faulty thumper.

Earlier, I posted some of my vows for the new year, and now I think that I need to add another.  Besides Joy, and Merry, Grateful, and  Thanks as words for the year, Appreciation needs to be up on the list.

Appreciation sounds a lot like Grateful, but in this case, it is a bit more.  To me, it will mean slowing down to think about what I do, what I make, and appreciating my own skill and drive to create.  And knowing how being creative keeps me going, and makes me who I am.   Not taking it for granted.

Holiday Mom-style Stress

celebrations, Dew Drop, family, Food and Drink, holiday decor, Sugarwings

IMG_0942

What was the best part of your Christmas?

Mine was these smiles.  And lots of them.

IMG_0957

The grand fairies seemed over joyed with all their gifts (even though Dewdrop didn't get the two front teeth that she needed).

IMG_0961

We were blessed with multiple celebrations starting with a Solstice party on the 21st, then our big family dinner and gifts to each other on the 24th.

IMG_0968

On Christmas morning, we checked out what Santa brought, then had a big, buffet, brunch-bash with relatives.

IMG_0977

With a table set for TWENTY THREE!  (Did I mention how much I love my newly enlarged space????)  We snaked three tables through the kitchen into the living room, and all seemed to fit just fine.

IMG_0976

I'd had planned to set the table and make it fancy, but I was lucky to even get food done.  So, everyone had to get their own forks and plates and drinks, which seriously, no one minded, or noticed. There is only so much time, and I overestimated how much time I had.

Which brings me to admitting that I over extended myself right along with the tables.

IMG_0935

Which I think is pretty typical for the mom of the family to do.

IMG_0953

After prepping all of the big meals, I was done in.

I loved, loved, loved, the family parts and the holiday traditions, of the weekend, but I have to say that I didn't enjoy fixing all of the food.   While trying to please everyone and make sure they all got their favorite things, making vegan, vegetarian, meat lover, and gluten free versions of the foods, I forgot to keep my Christmas spirit.  I got tired, I got cranky, I got resentful that I didn't have time to decorate cookies with the kiddos.

IMG_0945

I don't know if it was because I'd been ill this year and am not back to 100%, (a medicine that I am on for another month or so can cause tiredness and muscle aches) or if I'm simply getting older and slowing down, or if I really did over plan and do too much.

Or maybe:

  • I had shoes that were too tight.
  • My head wasn't screwed on right.
  • My heart was two sizes too small.

Cause I acted a little Grinchy while pulling it all together.  I'm a bit ashamed of myself.

IMG_9593

Yet, on the other hand, I sincerely, honestly love the holidays and it all means so much to me.  I did make a huge effort to stay positive and loving with the grand fairies, but I think I grumped and grinched a bit too much with the older family members and really shouldn't have let that happen.

IMG_9568

And no, even though Honey looks a little like Max here, I didn't force her into pulling a sleigh. I wasn't full on Grinch, just annoyed that the food preparation never seemed to end.

Like I said, it often is the way of many moms to stress out to make things perfect for Christmas.  Normally, I can kind of roll with it and keep our holiday simple while pretty.  This year, I'm not sure why, but it got away from me, and I was in over my head.

At least I learned a lesson.  Next year we will do a simmering pot of soup instead of a full  restaurant menu with enough food to feed a restaurant full of people.  I have to be able to treat my family special while not forgetting about myself too.

IMG_9645

Yes, I'll change the  dinner next time, but there isn't one other thing I'd change, it was delightful to be with people I loved and there is nothing better than that.

(and the leftovers were pretty tasty)

A holiday dinner party at the cottage

celebrations, cottage, friends, holiday decor

IMG_9392

Last week, I hosted the annual holiday book club party. Here is 2014 and here is 2015.  In the past, I've just done snacks and treats, but this year, I thought it would be nice to have a sit down dinner.

IMG_0837

Since we have the new space, I was thrilled to have a chance to use it.  Plus, the book club ladies are a nice group, it is good to have a night where we can kick back and chat about things other than books.

IMG_0845

The new space is ideal for entertaining. I picked up a small, drop leaf table that I keep in the hearth room by the door, and we carried it to the dining area, slanted the main table and added the drop leaf one onto the end of it.

IMG_0846

Originally, I thought I'd get a gigantic, rustic, farmhouse table to fill the space, and to seat my large family.

But then, I saw the price tags.

So, I bought a $60 drop leaf table to create more seating instead.

The drop leaf fits nicely, and solves the problem when needed. It is wonderful to have plenty of room to seat everyone without bringing in a folding table.  In the past, I'd have to move the island (I built it on wheels), set up a folding table from the studio, and cram in a few extra chairs.

Now, all of the guests fit comfortably without having to move the island.

As much as I like the look of a farm house table, I think I prefer having a more flexible set up. My dining table has 3 leaves and expands to 110", the little drop leaf adds space for 5 more people.  We had 11 for the party, and I think I can probably make three more fit if I got creative with where the chairs go.

Nothing on my table matches, and all of it is from garage or estate sales.   Sometimes, I think, maybe I should go buy some matching silverware, or glasses…. but honestly, I don't think anyone minds.  The lights are dim, the candles are lit, there is plenty of wine.

For this party, I used white dinner plates, table cloths and napkins, clear and gold salad plates, floral bread plates, and clear glasses.   I added a string of battery power lights to a bowl of painted pine cones topped with Shiny Brite fruit, and put some sparkling branches with lights, a pink glass garland, and gold Shiny Brite balls.

My local grocery store has $1.99 flowers on Mondays, and just happened to have some perfect ones for the party marked down and waiting for me. Pink and green, with a touch of red for the holiday.

I was going for a white on white look with a splash of color.

I made vegetarian lasagna, and stuffed shells with chicken and butternut squash a week ahead of time, then pulled it out of the freezer to bake up that night.  I always believe in as many short cuts as possible when planning a party.  Everyone brought wine to share, I baked some bread, bought packaged salad, and kept the dinner part simple.

Add a nice bunch of ladies, and it was a very nice party!
