Breakfast with Santa

celebrations, Dew Drop, family, Sugarwings

Bfast with santa 017

We had the best time at our breakfast with Santa at Lion's Gate Coutnry Club. The club is part of the company my husband works for so we have a membership, but if you know me at all, you will know that we are not a "clubby" sort of family.    My Handsome Husband takes a chance every time he invites us in to see how his side of the world operates.  We are all kind of arty and down to earth. He travels with the club set.

Bfast with santa 042

It was fun to have a reason to get dressed up, and have a fancy place to go, that was still kid friendly. I think its important for the little grand fairies to see both sides and experience some more formal places.

Bfast with santa 023

On the drive there, the kids told us how they had been practicing their manners.  And there was a lot of talk about Santa and just how old  he might be, if he was strong enough to chase down reindeer to catch them, and a few other curious aspects of the jolly old elf's life.

Bfast with santa 033

Fin was wondering if Santa lived there at the club, or did he just work there. And if Pop Pop worked there too, did that make him an elf?

Bfast with santa 036

Dewdrop didn't get the whole part about asking for presents, but she has been very good, so I'm sure he will bring her some ponies.

Bfast with santa 052

Everyone was at their country club best, manners were ideal and we all had fun. The only hitch in the whole day of us pretending that we fit in, was when my husband carried the baby around, accidentally bunching up her dress over his arm, as her little panties slid down, so that she mooned the whole dining room.

Her teensy weensy little baby butt was paraded all across the restaurant.

Bfast with santa 043

Aren't their dress up clothes cute? I found the girl's clothes at Salvation Army, for $2 each.

Bfast with santa 016

I'm quite happy to let someone else pay 50 bucks for a dress that gets worn for only one occasion, then donate it for me to buy cheap. Plus, my girls will wear them over and over as dress up clothes in their play closet.

I can just picture them all as winter fairies in their velvet and lace.

Bfast with santa 041

I wasn't so lucky finding something there for Mr. Fin, but he had this outfit already and looked extra cute.  They did all get brand new shoes for the party, but that I don't mind spending on, since that is such a practical thing.

Bfast with santa 038
We were very proud of the kiddos, and they all said thank you to the manager and to Santa as they left.

Bfast with santa 056

The food was amazing.  For Christmas Eve dinner, we are doing brunch instead of a big evening meal because Ryan has to work at 4pm. So, I was inspired by some of the tasty brunchy items on the buffet.

Bfast with santa 037

How are the plans for your holiday meals going?

It can be a lot of work, but when we all sit down together to eat, talk and be together, its worth every bit of the  trouble of pulling it together.  Moms and grammies tend to be overworked during the season with a heavy load of shopping, wrapping, grocery buying and cooking.  So, days out like this are especially appreciated by me amidst all the rush and work of putting a holiday together.

I
will be away from my computer till Sat. the 22nd.  Sorry, I can't get
new orders from the Boutique or Etsy out in time for Christmas.  Next
shipping date is Dec. 27th.  Wishing the happiest of holidays to you!!

Holiday parties galore!

celebrations, family, holiday decor, We're having a party

Bfast with santa 063
We had a big weekend, with lots of holiday fun.  Friday night, our Hippy Chick and the two little grand fairies went with us to dinner and to see "Rise of the Guardians".  Dewdrop loved it, because the "night mares" that the Boogey Man created were horses.  She is a huge pony fan, and yelled out "go Honies!!" every time she saw one of these spooky creatures in the movie. To her, they were the heros.

Bfast with santa 062

Afterwards, we drove around to look at Christmas lights. One home here in Lawrence had an elaborate display set to music, complete with a video of a life size Santa eating milk and cookies in the upstairs window.  At first, we thought they actually had  Santa up there, it was realistic as can be.  Then, the video started to loop and we started to clue in on what was going on.  All of a sudden, the size of the picture changed and his whole head filled the window, that part was a bit creepy and unexpected.

Bfast with santa 058

Then, on Saturday, we had a holiday pitch in dinner and craft party. And on Sunday, we had breakfast with Santa at one of the clubs my husband works at.

Bfast with santa 002

For the craft party, a friend had a bagful of clear glass balls she wanted to use up and we were challenged to find ways to create with them. So, I experimented with a few ideas, and filled a couple of tabletops with supplies for everyone to play with.

Bfast with santa 006

Some became snowmen, some had fairies or family member's photos inside.

Bfast with santa 057

I also had boxes that everyone could decorate and either top with a snowman head, or leave as is.

Bfast with santa 008

Another friend brought clothespins for the kids to make into toy soldiers.

Bfast with santa 061

Here is a snowman that Addie made.

Bfast with santa 012

Everyone's projects turned out quite different, which is one of the fun things about these kinds of parties.

Bfast with santa 013

Dinner was great too, pitch ins are my favorite. Every time I look into a pot or bowl someone else brought, it's like a little surprise party for my tummy. I love food that I didn't fix myself!

Bfast with santa 003

My studio didn't get much in the way of decor for the holidays this year.  I set out some of the things that I'd made for sale, which is an excellent way to decorate, because hopefully, when the season is over, the stuff is gone and there is nothing to put away.

Well, that is if things go as planned. But, these wings will still be in vogue for Valentine's Day, so I'm not worried if I have a couple left.

Bfast with santa 011

Our weather is once again freakishly un-winterlike this year.  So after making their projects, most of the kids played outside. Sugarwings soon turned her princess gown into something that looked like it had been dipped in Hershey's syrup, she had so much wet, gooey mud on herself.

After she and her little friend got cleaned up, we settled them in front of Frosty the Snowman on TV and gave them some hot chocolate to warm themselves up. It might have been warm outside for winter, but not really warm enough to play in the water and mud.

Bfast with santa 014

The husbands watched the KU game and played pool, we made things in the studio, and kids divided up their evening by crafting and playing outdoors.  I think they even explored the Fairy Berry Trail in the dark.

Bfast with santa 001

Yep, it was a good weekend!  I even managed to get about 75% of my Christmas shopping done.

But please, don't mention wrapping. ugh.

I will be away from my computer till Sat. the 22nd.  Sorry, I can't get new orders from the Boutique or Etsy out in time for Christmas.  Next shipping date is Dec. 27th.  Wishing the happiest of holidays to you!!

Painting puppeesh

celebrations, dogs, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), family, paintings, parties, puppies!

Brde

Isn't Ashley a beautiful bride?  The wedding was lovely and our teddy bear of a nephew, Travis looked very happy.

Photo

The wedding was held in a shabby chic lover's dream house.  I could have wandered around drooling over the furniture and decor all night. I wish I could have got more photos, but my camera broke and I forgot my phone.

Photous

Toward the end of the evening, it dawned on me that my husband had an Iphone  that I could borrow it and email a few pics to myself.  But by then, the light wasn't as good and I'd missed all the best shots.  This close up of my handsome husband and I needed severe editing to make it usable. The rest, weren't salvageable.

Nc 029

Luckily, my camera didn't shoot craps till right as the ceremony started, and I had it for the bridal shower which was such a fun time!

Nc 020

It was held at Wine and Design where we all got to do a complete painting to take away with us, drink wine and eat yummy chocolate cheddar cheese ( from Trader Joe's).

Nc 045

This art studio is a GREAT idea that I would love to snag.  You get a prepared canvas with a sketch on it, and the instructor paints along with everyone and they do a painting step by step.

Nc 021

Our class was a chandelier, but I was feeling a little homesick for my dorkie pups and for the kids. It was Dewdrop's second birthday, so I thought about her and painted a puppeesh (as she calls them) as a gift for her.

Nc 023

Its not the best painting I've done, but its aimed for a 2 year old. She likes it, and talks to the picture, telling it stories.

Nc 046

My idea of a fun party, is having a project to do, so this was right up my alley. They rent out to groups, and have a schedule of regular classes too.   I think it could be fun to do in my studio, not as a regular thing like this was, but maybe a little class here and there, or teaching a painting of birds in a nest for Birdsong next spring?

Nc 006

Years ago, I used to be a painter, I rarely pick up a brush any more. I don't miss it until I do one, then I wonder why I don't paint more often.

The bride and groom are crazy about their pup, Barkslie, and I offered to do a painting of her for their gift.

Nc 011

This is done in watercolor, but I cheat, and use white acrylic too.  I know that in the purest world of watercolor painters, this is frowned upon. But, I figure, its my picture and I can do as I like. So I do.  I think the watercolor wash of shadows and spots on the snout is nicely accented with the white hairs over it.  Now, the proper way to do this is to save the white of the paper, by using a masking fluid before painting the colors.  But I prefer the layers, so I don't bother doing it the right way.

(the whites of the eyes are pure paper and so is most of the white fur, just not the accents over it)

If I do painting classes here at the cottage, I'd tell people not to listen to snobs who tell you that your technique is wrong and go for a finished look that YOU like instead.

Anyone interested? If so, please let me know and we can try to set up a class.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving12 003
Did you have a good holiday?

Thanksgiving12 004

Ours had its missteps here and there, like any family gathering.  But for the most part, it was a lovely day.Thanksgiving12 002
A 20lb  fresh, organic turkey baked with garden herbs and olive oil went into the oven early and I got to hang out and play with the kids. I thawed corn that we froze this summer, baked bread and pies the day before, made mashed potatoes early and plopped them into a crock pot to stay warm, and I was FREE.

Setting the table is part of the fun, so I don't count that as any of the work of getting ready.  Plus, I did it pretty simply, like the rest of the day, a few pretties in the center of the table and moving some furniture around to set up a second table, and it was done.

Ten of us went to see a matinee of Wreck it Ralph, which made me cry. That was a cute movie, and so much more than I expected. I don't care for video games, so didn't really want to go, but promised little Finn that I'd take him.  I'm glad I did.

Afterwards, we played outside and in the studio. Perfect weather and perfect company.  Who cared that we were doing this a day early? Everyone had the day off on Wednesday, and the date itself didn't matter to any of us.

Thanksgiving12 005

All who came brought side dishes, that only needed warming up once they arrived. That was a delight!  Every time I took a lid off a pan to see what was inside it was like a mini surprise party, and each one made me so happy. I love pitch in dinners, its so much tastier to try everyone else's favorites.

And I didn't spend all day in the kitchen.

Thanksgiving12 019

This year, we tried to start a new tradition.  Usually, I coerce everyone to say what they are thankful for before we eat. This year, I decided to do a "blessing tree", so diners could write their thankful thoughts onto a paper leaf and add it to the tree.

That way, those who didn't feel like speaking up could still contemplate their blessings and think about the reason for the day, beyond just snarfing turkey.

Photo

Sugarwings, Finn and I went out on the Fairy Berry Trail to gather up some leaves to use as templates.

Thanksgiving12 024

I put all the kids to work producing enough leaves for the whole group.

Thanksgiving12 018

Each person got a leaf and a glitter pen to write on it.

I made the mistake of using a base that was too light weight for the tree and it toppled a few times, but no harm, even when it dove into a candle.

If this is going to be a tradition, next year, I'll get a better pot for the tree.  Maybe even bring in a living potted tree…

Thanksgiving12 026

This is Sugarwing's leaf. (before the glitter got so thick you couldn't read it). I think it says it all, don't you?

Lunch with carol 006

When I did a little make and take of Christmas stars at my friend, Angie's, store, I had a lovely evening.  Her place was so festive and pretty for the upcoming holidays. I got there just as the sun was deciding to set and there was a soft glow of lights coming from the shop windows. Yep, just lovely.

See the flowers on her doors?  Years ago, when she first rented the place, I surprised her with  little rosebuds on the door panels.  I came by when the place was closed and whipped out a few roses as a welcome to the new place.  There aren't many people you could do that for, just randomly show up unannounced and start painting on their building, but I knew her well enough to know she would like it.

Lunch with carol 004

We used to work together on projects in the past, she'd hire me to paint for her, and I'd invite her to be a  part of the antique shows I used to have at my house.   It had been a while since we'd done a project together, so I was really looking forward to being at her open house.

There wasn't much traffic at all for my little make and take, but I still had a great evening.  Its nice just to have a reason to hang out with good friends and pretend that its "work" so that you have to be there.  And she is a nice person to hang out with.

Lunch with carol 001

The same day, I meet up with some other friends that a good to spend time with, Debbie, Carol, and Amy.  We are all going to speak at Carol's workshop for creative businesses.

They are some seriously fun and friendly people, who are also very successful in what they do.  I was a bit overwhelmed after our discussion about what we were going to say during our talks.  Amy has written many books, owns a couple of businesses, Debbie is a nationally known stylist among other things, and Carol's store and photography business are gorgeously done. All are quite knowledgeable.

There was lots of talk of business practices, employees, and other professionally sounding things  like power point and publishers and such.

What was my contribution?  It kind of sounded like this:

"Me like purdy stuff"

Wreaths 004

Yep, a bit out of my league with these ladies.

The talk is sold out, and Carol has a long waiting list of people who want to come. I certainly don't want to disappoint anyone. I'm better at making things than talking about my so called business.

So, what do you think? If you were attending, what would you like to hear?

Carol is letting me do a small craft along project, that will later be used as props for her photography styling talk.  I'll be happy to have that to do, but I'm also talking about blogging and tutorials as we work on our sparkly make and take doodad.

If you were coming, what would you like to hear about blogging or business from me?

Besides, "Me like sparkles. Them is purdy"

Two Millionth Visitor

celebrations, family

Pups and hats 004
No, I'm not talking about the puppies. There were days when 9 pups climbing all over me, felt like a million or so, but I meant my blog- sometime over night, my TWO MILLIONTH visitor came by!

Oh my. I certainly never expected that when I first started my blog and had 3 people a week looking at it.

Pups and hats 001

Thanks so much for coming by to see me.  My blog started out as a marketing tool, but has become so much more to me.  I've met the best people, and made some lasting friendships.

9312_10151202201449477_1198472100_n

Definitely blogging has become more than work.

Its my journal, my scrapbook, my musings.  I can whine a little about my problems, I can share my joys.  Its nice to have a place to show someone what I've been working on, like this painted tee for Sugarwings.  She told me that she wished all pumpkins were pink and shaped like hearts, so I created one for her.

Halloween 062

Having a blog has led me to capturing photos of the grand fairies that I will always treasure.

Head class 016

I wish I'd had this kind of incentive to snap photos of my own sons when they were little.  Of course, no digi cameras back then, I was dirt poor, so film and developing were a luxury.

Forsale nove3 039

And where else could I talk about flea market and garage sale finds with people who get it and drool along with me?  My husband's eyes just glaze over when I start showing him my purchases. Until he starts to wonder just how much I've spent…

Halloween 059

Yep,my blog has been a great marketing tool, but I'd say its the sharing that means the most to me.

Working as an artist, I spend a lot of time alone.  But with my blog, I have friends to chat with right here with me, just a click away.

Thanks for keeping me company!

Happiest Halloween

celebrations, Dew Drop, family, holiday decor, We're having a party

Halloween party 108
We had a Halloween party that kind of morphed into a multi-layered event.

Halloween party 093

At first it was going to be just our Gypsy and I making some masks.

Halloween party 035

But for  most holidays, I try to have a kid's craft day with my friends, so I decided to invite all of them too.

Halloween party 027

And we decided that maybe it would be fun to have a bonfire also, and invite husbands to hang out there while we made things.

Halloween party 024

We figured that while we were all together that we should do a pitch in dinner and make a whole evening of it.

Halloween party 128

Complete with a late night, impromptu tea party in the gazebo with the little girls.

Halloween party 130

And of course, some puppy cuddling too!

Rgghost weekend 100

So, I picked up a bunch of supplies for the kiddos.

Rgghost weekend 101

And found these paper mache masks at Target for only $2 each.

Halloween party 049

Michaels had these wooden ones for $1.

Halloween party 033

After dinner, we worked out in the studio off and on between visits to the bonfire for s'mores, or having a game of flash light tag.

Halloween party 046

I'm always impressed at how hard the kids work when we have these craft parties.

Halloween party 031

There is a wide range of creativity, and you never know what they will come up with.

Halloween party 039

There were mini pumpkins for the kids to decorate too. The younger the kid, the more projects you need to have. Older kids and adults can spend all evening on one thing, but the more petite artists like to move from one piece to the next pretty quickly.

Halloween party 069

We had perfect weather for the night.  Wow, what luck!  It was nice enough to dine outside, but just chilly enough to enjoy the bonfire too.

Halloween party 070

And while I preach anti orange and purple for the holiday, its still fun to have some more obvious decor for the kids.

I had plenty of traditional colors in the ribbons and stickers too.  As a matter of fact, I had more than enough, so I bagged up leftover stickers and took them to Sugarwing's kindergarten class to use.

I think the little ones had a good time.

Decorating a family reunion on a budget

celebrations, family, Food and Drink, holiday decor, how to's

For the Faery Book Swappers-

Since the 1st is a holiday weekend, its ok to wait till Tuesday to mail your packages. And please note that it will take me a couple of weeks to make that many books and get them mailed back to you!

Downey dinner 12 009
My Daddy came from a large family, and every year, we gather at our "Downey Dinner" to reconnect.  The 9 siblings take turns hosting, and as the family grows older and parents are passing on, it falls to the cousins to take over hosting duties for the pitch in meal.

This year was my dad's turn, so my sisses and I took over as co-hosts.

Of course, I felt like we needed to foof it up a bit! But we didn't want to spend much on top of our share of the costs that we already had (plates, cutlery, beverages, meat, and the hall rental).

Downey house

The Downeys are from Southern Indiana farm stock.  All nine kids grew up in this little house.  So, I thought the theme for the reunion should be kind of down home and country.  I chose red and white table cloths from the dollar store, and collected some old canning jars from garage sales.

My niece had a boxful of clear marbles, and we poured a few into each canning jar to weight them down, and then sat the jars on doilies (from my stash) in the centers of the tables.

Downey dinner 12 013

At Michaels, I found a scrapbook tablet in just the right colors, called "Recollections"  in paper sack brown, sepia, and red.  There was a touch of forrest green too.  It featured love letters and memorabilia, some birds and other pretty little bits to cut out and use as embellishments for our project. It was a little fancier than I wanted, I'd hoped for calico or checks, but these colors were just right, so I went for it.

We decided to make the centerpieces be Family Trees.  So, we printed off a pile of pictures in different sizes and started cutting them out, and gluing them to shapes we'd cut from the scrapbook paper. We tried to make sure that all nine sibling's families were represented in the mix.

Then, we walked around to find some branches in Bobbie Sue's yard and discovered that the lilac bushes had branches that worked perfectly.  Lots of branchy little arms to tie pictures to.

Next, we punched holes and tied strings to the photos, and they were ready to tie to the sticks.

Downey dinner 12 036

We got a little carried away with the photos and made extra, so we took everything off the bulletin board in the rented hall and I added a branch and pictures to that too.

Downey dinner 12 053

After the meal, we announced that everyone could pluck photos from the trees to keep.  And when the party was over and clean up time came, there were none left, so I think that everyone enjoyed them.

Downey dinner 12 049

The Family Trees were a little tall for centerpieces, and I expected to see people moving them aside, but it didn't look like they were much of a problem.  And people spent a lot of time looking at them, and there was some extra mingling with everyone going from table to table to check out the variety of snapshots.

Downey dinner 12 051

My romantic, sweetheart had tied a picture of me from the trees, to his
shirt.  He now has it on his computer bag and carried it through the
airport that way on his business trip.

Downey dinner 12 023

There was plenty of paper left, after making the photo trees, so I decided to make a banner to hang up by the kitchen.

Downey dinner 12 027

It was a fast and simple project, I cut out 6 large rectangles from paper that looked like it would make a good background, and inked the edges.  When there was something pretty on the page like the bird in this one, I cut around it, so it stood out from the side.

Next, I took some of the darker pages and cut out the letters, glued them down and drew around them with red marker.

Two holes were punched in the top and a length of ribbon was run through all the letters.

Downey dinner 12 029

I made the letters free hand. It wasn't a planned project and I was in a hurry.  They are far from perfect, but they did the job.

In the tablet, there were some pages that had this glittery, red "love" on them, so I cut a couple of those out to hang below two of the letters.

Downey dinner 12 031

I used more scraps to make signs for the beverages.  This paper practically decorated itself, all I had to do was cut this out, fold it and write the words on it.

(a sliced star fruit and some fresh strawberries prettied up the jug of lemonade)

Downey dinner 12 035

We took an idea from the Clampetts and covered the pool table to use as a buffet for the salads and main dishes.  The desserts had a separate table.  I knew a lot of treats were coming, so I washed off the piano bench (cleaning the legs and under part extra good) and set it on the table to make more space.  And this photo was taken early on, by the time all the goodies arrived, this dessert buffet was full to the brim!

Downey dinner 12 033

This is just something I thought was funny, yes, I know, weird picture. It looks like the fried chicken is trying to escape from the foil covering it! (or maybe its just waving to the guests as they arrive?)

But you can kind of see the room behind the franken-chicken, and see the red and white tables with the Family Trees on them.

The hall was a nice space, and the perfect size.  There were some gorgeous antiques around the room and many of the framed pieces on the walls were attractive. The ones that were not pretty, or old, we took down for the day. I preferred plain white walls to pink and blue wreaths on the wall with our red and white decor.

Downey dinner 12 046

After eating, we shoved some tables out of the way and set up a corner for group pictures, and I moved the banner over there to hang as a backdrop.

Actually, I didn't move it, I had the Bumbles do it.  Whats a Bumble? Remember the animated Christmas special, Rudolf? At the end, the abominable snowman, who Cornelias calls a Bumble, puts the star on the top of the tree. Whenever I need a tall person to reach something for me, I call them my "Bumble".

Downey dinner 12 070

My sisses and I had a good time co-hostessing the bash.  It was just too bad it was such a quick trip, my husband and I packed up and drove 8-1/2 hours back home as soon as the room was cleaned up, so we could get back to the newborn puppies.
Sparks12 017

I'm glad my sisters are coming out for Romantic Gothic Ghosts!  That will make up for having our sister time cut short due to Twinkle's over active birth of nine tiny Yorkies.  When they get here, those pups will be running around under foot and will be such fun to play with.

Downey dinner 12 003

I bought the $19 scrapbook paper with my 40% off coupon, spent $4 on canning jars, and $15 on table cloths.  We had the string, ribbon, doilies, clear marbles, and glue already.  The only other cost was printing the photos. We did a combo of some from the computer and 11 cent prints from Walgreens.

We didn't have to spend a lot of time on the decor, besides cutting and gluing photos. And we like to have a craft day when we get together any how, so that part was fun.

It was a fast and cheap way to decorate for a family gathering!

Pretty babies

celebrations, Dew Drop, dogs, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), family, puppies!, yorkies

Newborns 060

I'm back from my trip and Twinkle was a busy girl while I was gone. So was Aunt Sandy! I was glad she was here to take over, having an RN in charge of the difficult birth was a godsend.

Newborns 011

The difficulties arose from Twinkle having NINE pups to deliver!

After the second, not much happened. We'd visited our vet for directions earlier, read all the dog birthing info we could, and Sandy watched countless videos on whelping puppies.  So, when labor stopped progressing, she knew to take Twinks in to the doc.

Newborns 055

A couple more were born there, but the sonogram showed a total of eight babies (a rare number of pups for someone of Twinkle's size). Our vet said that the mama needed to be taken to Kansas City to the emergency vet for a C-section.

All of this drama was happening while I was driving to Indiana.  At first, all was going well, but as the prognosis kept changing,  I started to think I should turn around. Of course, I was already almost to Indiana about the time we heard that things weren't going well at all and that surgery might be needed.

I talked to the vet over the phone, and was told that if Twinkle had a C-section, she would have to have all the babies taken away from her, they would need to be completely hand raised.

Newborns 039

I called friends and family to arrange some help for Sandy, but decided I should also be headed back to be on bottle patrol too.

But when Sandy and Lyric (the owner of the pup's father) got to the ER, those vets had a different story.  They thought the babies could be delivered naturally and decided to keep Twinkle over night for observation.  And they said there were NINE, not eight!

At this point, I was a bit of a wreck, and before I had a wreck on I70, I decided to get some rest, get a hotel room and make a decision in the morning.

Newborns 050

Morning brought great news!  Twinkle had delivered all 9 little ones, each healthy and strong!

The ER vets said that they had never seen a Yorkie have that many babies. Our Twinkle is not a teensy girl, but she is also not a giant Yorkie. She is about 9 lbs, which is still a pretty small dog.

Her little body can't support that many youngens.  She needed IV calcium and is on supplements too.   We still need to bottle feed the babies, but they are also able to nurse and Twinkle can take care of them with our help.

Since Sandy wasn't completely on her own with with care and feeding of the pups, and Twinkle could keep them warm and clean, Beth, our Gypsy, and Lyric could come by to help, I decided to go on to Indiana for the reunion.

It was not an easy decision.  But it was our late father's turn to host the dinner, it was up to my sisses and I to be the hostesses in his place. I had a car full of supplies and table cloths, my sisters had taken vacation days that had been requested way in advance, and my husband was flying in on Saturday to attend and drive home with me.

Sandy was a trouper and went into full on RN mode, staying up around the clock to make sure those puppies were full and cared for. She was much better than I would have been, she devoted herself totally to the newborns.

I had a great time with my family, and the reunion was wonderful.  I was able to relax and enjoy it, knowing that all the dogs were in good hands and that I'd be home with them soon to snuggle (and stay up all night feeding them myself soon enough!)

We cut our trip short and drove straight back to KS as soon as the big family dinner ended and we got cleaned up, getting home in time for a midnight feeding.

Monday night, we had our own big family dinner with the grands over to see the puppies and to thank Sandy for being a hero and saving all the babies.  Everyone raised their cup to toast Aunt Sandy and thank her for all she did.  I owe her more than a steak dinner, she was a huge help during a rough time!

Thanks, Sandy!! And congrats, Twinkle!!

And good bye sleep for a while… these 6 boys and 3 girls will keep us hoppin.

Gatherings and Ghosts

celebrations, holiday decor, Workshops

Last week at garage sales, there was a lady selling tons of holiday decor. I bought a few punkin things for about 25 to 50 cents each.   They were the typical bright orange that you see, with some warm autumn tones, but not my style.

So, I sprayed them with white primer, let them dry, brushed on Elmer's Glue, and sprinkled glitter on them.

The tea cup was from the same day of garage sailing, and I thought it was just perfect to use together with the glitzed pumpkin as a  centerpiece for Romantic Gothic Ghosts. (there are a few seats left if you would like to come to the party too!)

This little bit of pretty illustrates what I mean when I say you can decorate for Halloween and not go garish.  I love to set out holiday themed things, but just am not a fan of the tradtional purple, orange, and neon colors that you usually see.

This glittered candle ring is another one that I changed, and I can see myself using it all fall, not just at Halloween. I'll show it in action when I get around to setting out my fall pretties.

I found all of these dishes while out garage sailing too.  For pennies apiece.  I was thrilled with them!  It was a joy to find some decent sales, this summer I have been disapointed  in the caliber and amount of sales to go to.  I hope I find some fun bargains while on my trip too, my sisses and I usually have a junking day together.

And this looks like it will be good shopping, have you heard about "The Gathering"? Its a shopping/crafting day in St Joe hosted by my new blog friend, Jennifer.

She had asked me to teach that day, but I had too much going on, with trips, puppies, Fairy book pages, etc.  I hope to run up and explore for the day, it sounds interesting. Carol is speaking! And my pals, Nora, and Sheila will be teaching.  Claudia will be selling her vintage wares, among others too- it should be fun.

Jennifer was kind enough to swap gifts for the events. She sent one of her delectable candles to me so I can give it away at Romantic Gothic Ghosts, and I sent her a gift for the Gathering.

For her party, I sent one of my Wire Workshop nests, along with a code for the online class.  I don't know if she will give them away as a set or as two gifts.

At Romantic Gothic Ghosts, I'll have a few door prizes to give away, but it will be a pretty laid back affair. I'm not asking for sponsors.  I'll probably make a few little gifties as door prizes, and was thrilled that Jennifer offered a gift.

Birdsong is an easy going event too, but this one will be even more so.  I'll be cooking for the group, but am planning do ahead meals, so that I can relax and have fun and be part of the party myself.

Beth and I brainstormed about some treats to serve.  Pumpkin cheesecake and carmel apple cake both came to mind as delicious fall desserts. Once we started thinking about desserts, it was hard to make our minds go to the main dish.  Is there a meal that says "Fall" to you?

She came to spend a day with me while I was on puppy watch (this was written back on 8/20, so at that point I have no puppy info yet, Twinkle is still a roly poly girl)

Beth put on her nurse's hat to help deliver just in case she was needed. I have no idea why she had a vintage nurse cap handy. But then, she has everything and anything vintage, so I am not surprised.  And doesn't she inspire confidence while wearing it?

We had a great craft day, but no puppies. Lave 003
My crafting was more prep work.  This is a dress that I'd purchased the last time Beth adn I went shopping together.  Lave 004

It's made up of row after row of beautiful old  lace! So I spent the afternoon cutting it up, into strips to pack into kits for upcoming classes.  I also packed up stuffing and millinery flowers for the ravens we will be making for Romantic Gothic Ghosts.

I kind of enjoy making kits. Its just plain fun to play with the vintagey supplies that go into them. Expecially when I  have a good friend around for laughs.
