My year of embracing orange and a redo-rescue

For the first autumn of my adult life, I’ve been drawn to fall colors.  It kind of coincides with my attraction to the mix of warm woods that I’ve now blended in my house along with the existing whites and creams.

For decades if was just the whites.  But I sure am enjoying the wood textures we have added.  Also the dark leather chairs by the stone hearth.
4B6528FA-FB4F-437A-AB42-8CE3EB03D229
Did it start with this dining table?  Maybe.  I’ve added quite a few touches of wood around our house since.

F9336D44-EEB6-4C80-ADBC-DEAD4560585D

The hutch is painted white, but has a natural top.  This has been my new, go to move.  There are a few pieces with this paint on the bottom, wood stain on the top look in the last few years.

But orange?  That is brand new for me.  And I like the pops of brightness that color brings to the season.

For a while now, I have loved red accents on a white background at Christmas.  Having a neutral background means  that I can switch things up lot lot with just a few changes of color splashed around the room.

947284E4-E6BD-4A40-ACC7-CE4F6A841D7C

This over blown monstrosity was at a garage sale for one dollar, and typically, I’d have walked right by it.  Or paused to wonder how the basket would look spray painted white (probably very nice, filled with roses).

2C46336E-2C76-498B-945D-F153611AD49F

It is actually a very nice shape and looked good with a pot of mums as is.

Instead, I decided to accept the orange and see what I could do with it.

It had a lot of big, velvet pumpkins inside, two I added to the urns in the top pic.  The rest I set aside along with about 50% of the crazy, over the top amount amount of leaves and berries and bows.

623E2B8E-67B6-4480-ADDC-76BA58F826EA

The abundance was pared down to a more reasonable amount in the basket, and I still have a lifetime supply of leaf and berry picks to use for something else.

523607AE-6EA1-4FDA-BD8E-5E9C37BD5D11

So that makes three more palatable arrangements and a leftover bag of supplies for $1, plus the 50 cents each I paid for the urns at the same garage sale.
A4F4B6F8-CD70-4FB8-9C2F-3DD7B3079794
Plus, plenty of stems leftover to fill this caldron (also from a garage sale).

All filled with my new enjoyment of autumn tones.  I won’t be changing over my entire decor to pumpkin colors, but I am liking the hints and peeks of them I have scattered around.

Sometimes a short cut repair is better than nothing

Our chicken coop/storage shed/cat dwelling sure was (and actually, still is) in bad shape.

Very

Bad

Shape

But with a few sheets of siding and less than two cans of paint, at least it isn’t an eyesore like it was.

2C3850FE-A75A-402D-B06C-FFF0BF66AF72

Here it is as we got started. My husband had already began adding the siding to the bottom on the left before I remembered to get a photo.  He also emptied it out.

Yep, he did a clean up on the inside too!  That man is a keeper. (Unlike some of the spider webby piles of hoarded junk we found inside)

B39745E7-58C6-4969-A972-626447D9C4C9

We know that the correct way to repair this structure would have been to pull all the siding off. It’s rotting.  But- so is the rest of the building and we aren’t ready to tear it all down and rebuild.  It’s still functional for what we needed.

6E5B0E16-5644-40E0-AD1E-5C0A69AEBD3E

What we did instead was cover up the worst part and paint the rest.

Paint is magic.

After adding a slice of siding over the bottom, we thought a strip of trim would help it look more intentional instead of just bandaged.

1FD665BB-7B89-45D8-9C34-B6AD10806F72

Rich also trimmed off the most ragged of the ends of the roof boards and I painted over them too.

9B12DFD7-75E6-4F09-8B2F-7FC79313F9C1

See how bad they were to start with?  Also, years ago when I used this shed as an antique store, I’d painted vines around the entry, added cute aqua shutters, and a barn door as a canopy over the entry.  Well most of it rotted away with time, but those vines were still hanging in.  I’d used oil based paint, which is why I think it held up so well.

To paint over them, I’d need to prime, but I still kind of liked them and the history of adding them, so instead, I got a small brush and painted around the leaves.

D976A294-9517-4EAF-B4C8-E02D0CD6CD21

Same with the metal peacocks.  They had hung on that building for 30 years, from way back when we used to raise peafowl.  I had to leave those, they were history.

It isn’t done right, but it’s done good enough.  Sometimes you gotta just slap some lipstick on a pig and get on with things, right?  It’s better than it was. And at under $250 for the clean up, as opposed to the cost of demolition and rebuilding?

I’m pretty happy with the cosmetic improvements.  This pig is much cuter with make up.

New in the studio

Did I mention our new peeps?

77F667A5-2910-4FD7-9758-8DB951CD778F

They arrived on the day before Easter, and it was right after I got whacked in the head, so I was resting and still in bed.

EBCFF409-FE0A-4DFB-95AB-DE72D4615AC1

Rich walked in with a box shaped like the kind Duncan Donut uses and I thought he was bringing me breakfast in bed since I wasn’t feeling so hot, quite a surprise!

423D53EA-7777-4B25-984E-94470C602E76

But these were an even better surprise.  They named after donuts because of my first impression of them.

We enjoyed the new peeps so much we promptly bought six more, this time “Olive Eggers.”

Here is a more recent photo, they are starting to feather out and learn to fly.  We put a grate over then pen to keep them in.  While I do not mind sharing my studio with them, to keep them warm, I don’t particularly like the idea of them having free range of it.

CC32D562-0046-4847-B263-26E20D8F2CDC

They have the sweetest songs as the peep and tweet all day.  It’s been such a relaxing sound to have in the background as I work.  I will miss them when they go to live in the coop with the big girls.

Another redo for Ryan’s apartment

cottage, family, redos, Ryan

A2044B2F-9CDC-4E53-BCBB-611F7D0D5AD8
For Ryan’s 40th birthday, he wanted his apartment fixed up.  He chose the paint colors and flooring, we got light fixtures and ripped out his bathroom to replace the shower, toilet and sink.

There had been a kitchenette that he never used in the living room, so we pulled it out and covered up the plumbing hook ups.

76CEB626-83A9-4897-81A6-627101924851

After he died, we switched it up a little, and purchased a new bed, but mostly left it as it was.  We just enhanced it and made it more fitting for a guest to stay in.

20DBED40-F9FE-4323-A295-6A72ED2DFF1E

Then for various reasons, it was occupied by family members all between leases and waiting to move to their new places.

As they brought their belongings in and out, Ryan’s things got shifted and resettled, we gave his couch away to make space, finally took some things to goodwill, sent his gaming systems to others who might use them, and well, it just didn’t feel the same afterwards.
We used to go in there sometimes to feel close to him, and no longer could do that.

25CC9E15-F65E-43C9-8045-EC653C542396

Now that it is empty again, I wanted to honor Ryan by using some things he cared about, but make the room even more functional as a guest room.  Also, I got a new sofa in my own living room, and to save money, took my old one up to the apartment.

0B8EE343-F1F2-4423-8DC7-120A37F1E699

It’s a very different style than the previous couch.  But I think it still works in the room.

B24E886A-2FB0-4B78-BA14-A91B97D3BBC6

Amazon had a stretchy, seat cushion cover that warmed up the white on white look, and I found some great pillow covers there too.  And ticking striped curtains!  I really liked those, and since the other ones had been attacked by kitties and had to go I had a good reason to splurge.

2BD71C70-CA3C-4207-92A0-B7D1906681E4

Hopefully, these additions make the couch less foofy/girly than it was when I had it covered in floral pillows for the last 15 years while using it in the cottage.

His coffee table needed the top repainted and I went with gray, but then didn’t like that with his Black and Tan rug, so I got this runner to tie in the colors better.

91392246-A1CE-4A6F-8424-8D154D4CB4EB

People were so generous with floral arrangements after he died.  I’ve saved each vase and have been covering them in mosaic glass.

And while this sounds pretty silly when I tell you about it, it’s very meaningful to me.  Ryan was always the first one up after every meal, clearing dishes, scraping the glass cook top with a razor and wiping out the microwave.   He also used to hang out and chat while I did pour paintings, even though he didn’t make any himself (I wish I’d pushed him to try!)

So here is the silly part.

When our microwave needed replacing, I saved the glass tray, primed it, and made it into a painting.  It is now a tray in his room.

Half of his space was set up as a home gym, which we took down because my husband already has a workout space in his office.  To honor Ryan’s dedication and in apology to him for taking out the gym, I placed this stone that says “strength” on the microwave tray.

Its all just symbols, Those little things were not here when he was here.  But they are chocked full of meaning to me, none the less.

5FCC5306-A71F-4BE1-A109-362F272F9BA7

Same with these two pictures.  They were not his, but they remind me of Malarkey, the red bird that drove Ryan bananas by dive bombing the windows.  That bird was a regular part of our conversations and Ry went back and forth between laughing about him and hating him.

I hung the vintage prints so the story will be a part of this room.

The area that held the gym, now has a table and chairs.

45CE9B64-4200-4D4A-B2F2-FDD3EAC6F060

They also, have nothing to do with my son.  But I painted them in the colors he chose when we redecorated the room on his birthday.

86F5B95A-D1B7-40A8-B86E-31BDD86275B3

His guitar hangs on the wall.  It has a pretty, mother of pearl inlay and he loved it.

9800CDAD-5CAF-4825-B997-E96E7AA403AF

There are so many changes to his space.

8F670E4B-91FC-460A-9413-BEC1EA681005

Just like there are so many other changes since he died.  Things do continue to go on and to morph, don’t they?  But the memories are there and the love is forever.  While this room no longer looks like it did when he lived in it, to me, his light will always live on in there.

A home for my altered violin

cottage

56124ECC-3A21-4526-A87D-2794DE32D698
When Guncle Randy and I made our violin art in Florida, I really wasn’t sure where I would use mine.

8452EF34-7AD8-42CF-8068-74C69505A9DF

Then, when I got my new couch and was moving things around, I found that it fits just right above it.

Randy had a violin ticked into the circle of a boxwood wreath.  I am considering doing that with it too.  I think it would look good displayed that way here.

FAD89CAB-E345-4505-8693-0274CC478AE5

The couch is made with washable slipcovers!  It’s from Pottery Barn, and is long enough to nap on.  My living area isn’t very big, so it took a while to find a sofa that fit the space but still was lengthy. The trick was in finding one with narrower arms.

The washability was another important need.  Four dogs and a grand fairy who believe that there are very few valid reasons to ever get off of a comfy sofa mean that needed something durable.

The rest of the ice resin

cottage, Hearts, Ryan, sea shell fairies

81D04FB2-037E-4C46-BBFE-EF74BB15A544
While in Florida, I found a never ending treasure trove of hearts on Walton Rocks beach near Ft Pierce.  Some rocks, some shells, all eliciting squeals of joy from me.  These were found in three trips.

9C183D53-4711-4C08-B12C-A025BF87BB90
I had big plans for a beachy toned display, but then decided I wanted to fill this black tray and use it in Ryan’s apartment.  I pressed the hearts into tile adhesive which was a sandy gray tone.

4C9E4587-8429-462C-9EDF-E12FAB3269AD

Sorry, no pics of that stage.  But- the hearts all sorta disappeared into the background and the adhesive was blah.  So, I tried some gemstone flakes in aqua shades, still not enough contrast.

I decided to use fluorite chips for more distinction.  I’m not a person who has much purple in their life, but I have nothing against the color.  And Ry’s room has pops of bright colors in it to brighten up the grays, so in theory it should work.

But overall, it was just kinda messy.  I should’ve done something else with my treasures.  Plus, the hearts were all different thicknesses and it wasn’t functional as a tray, and too heavy to be a wall hanging.

82C38F45-0C9A-48C0-AA3D-125D337F6D4D

That is when I decided to use ice resin.  Which was a good idea, but maybe I should’ve used more?  There are still some high points.  But, overall, it did make the tray more functional.

73564154-34C9-4655-B2C4-345DAAE12C10

Many of the rocks had holes, and I tucked heart shaped garnets (Ryan’s birthstone) into them before pouring on the resin.

F6CA3E8B-133D-4508-AE27-DD661A87A8D7
Ryan would’ve liked it, and I am enjoying using some colors in his room that I don’t typically use in my cottage.  And I think I will probably try out more resin projects in the future.

A much delayed, simple project

cottage, vintage paper/collage art

FCD23634-D6F6-4DC7-9D64-CEC951693BC2

At my Peeps Craft Day, I had a couple of little side projects to get done too. Once we finished our Easter pictures, we all turned to our own things.  I made some labels for my various spray bottles in the bathroom.

Finally.

I like to have them out to use instead of keeping them in a cabinet, and it always bothered me that they never matched my bathroom.

5920E85B-63E0-4381-AD81-D85851F6AC74

Silly, because it was such a quick and easy thing to do.  That I had thought about for YEARS.  What makes me put off little projects like that?  It’s not like my plate was so full, I never had time.

But maybe having them done and displayed wouldn’t have made me as happy as it does now, after looking at the previous labels for years as is?  I sure like them now!

We had a little get together for a Peeps craft day at the cottage.  Angie brought a cookie display that was so pretty, it had to immediately become the center piece for our luncheon.

CD07EBA0-901D-4A71-A137-97CB4B273ABD

Sadly, three people had other things come up and couldn’t make it.  Beth offered to bring a salad at the last minute so I wouldn’t have find a side dish for the quiche and homemade bread I’d prepared, which was very helpful of her.

She always makes the best salads, too.

98056721-4B45-40CF-83FE-71DD581CDF87

I’d tried my hand at making brioche bread, and while it’s a lot of extra work compared to the kind I typically whip up, I think it is way worth it.  But- there is almost a whole stick of butter in it opposed to the tablespoon of heart healthy oil I usually use, so maybe I won’t make a habit of this decadent bread that feels more like a pastry than a slice of bread.

The remainder of the loaf home was sent with the gal pals, thinking I would save myself from all that butter.  But then, Nora left some of her cream pie tarts, Angie left cookies, and well, here I am having both for breakfast and feeling pretty happy to have them.

13CF81C3-703B-40D1-AC00-605C93EB8906

Lunch was only a little part of the day, the main event for me is always the projects.

8755C528-AF13-442B-AE3A-94C50635FF81

We had vintage album mats and little girls images to make Easter wall hangings.  This one is mine, and since I’d previously made a yellow daffodil one, I wanted a different style, but this might be too dark to be springy.  I also don’t like the green pattern in the brown wallpaper and might peel up the girl to add another layer beneath her.  Maybe some blue ledger paper…

4B31E9BF-98F4-4ABF-878A-CE603A486D0D

This one is Nora’s next to her cute picnic basket that came full of tarts and fruity, sparkly wine.

(It did not leave full)

3270A541-D706-48C2-8A50-F40A13B16B6A

Everyone got a hand drawn placemat.  Well, since only half of the group could come, they each got two.

ECAD8905-060C-48D4-98CD-4F1FC1AD0A2F

I might make a habit of these.  When I host real events, not just get togethers, I usually draw on tablecloths.  But lately, instead of plastic table cloths that tickle your legs, and are pretty flimsy anyway, I’ve been covering my work tables in poster board and using large scrap book paper as place markers.

A5027B24-1205-4787-85C5-5E90A7C42762

While these quick cartoons aren’t exactly major pieces of art, they are a little different.  Plus, I really like drawing, so, yep, I think it might become something I’ll be doing more of.

5257F6A9-E517-4D1C-A7D5-35FEE08E191A

Although the square size isn’t ideal for dining room placemats, a rectangle would be better.

238D4CA7-BDE7-46DB-9CC2-40EF7EB37239

Once we finished our Easter pictures, everyone had something else they’d brought to do.  I made some little people to use on something else some day.  Just because I love making little people.  It reminds me of all the hours of playing I spent with paper dolls as a kid.

1C330ADF-29A5-4E48-870E-AF947FC8D6F4

After the last couple of years that we have had, days like this mean more to me than ever.  It was the best!

Repainted roses

I recently repainted the flowers on the shutters by my kitchen door.

552AEB28-DD99-4192-9880-ED2B3587CBB5

The “shutters” are actually parts of a byfold door, found at a garage sale that I took apart and painted to look old.

Years ago, I added roses to them and they were fine.

But I decided the flowers were too simple and I wanted more.

So, here they are, touched up.

It was a quick project, since it was sort of an overlay on top of a previous design.  I just added to what was already there.

Well, a bit of hoppiness warms things up, either way.

Before we left, I had Valentine pretties in place, and was smart enough to quickly box them up before heading out of town.  Because as nice as it is to come home, it’s a bit sad to return to decor past it’s prime by a month or so.

Instead of just doing some springtime displays, I went full on Easter Bunny.

It was up a tad early, but I’ve liked having time to enjoy it.  And of course, putting out the bunnies also means it’s time to set out the candy dishes of jelly beans, and I have really, really been enjoying those.
