Puppy Snuggles

Dew Drop, dogs, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), family, Mayara, puppies!

Last fairypages 032
These puppies are growing so fast! Dewdrop is their biggest fan, and her mommy says that she wants to see photos on Facebook of them all the time.  She calls them Puppeesh.

Last fairypages 019

Dewdrop is a gentle child and can sit quietly and just snuggle a baby pup.

Last fairypages 020

Of course, being on her loving Pop Pop's lap makes snuggle time even more special.

Last fairypages 012

The babies decided to learn how to play on Saturday and are starting to wrassle with each other. Mostly, it involves chewing on a brother's nose for a minute, putting paws around each other, then napping.

Last fairypages 034

For now, they reside in the living room, inside the wading pool.  I keep a box with their (ever changing throughout the day) blanket or towel in the pool, line the pool with newspapers and pee pads, and they have learned how to waddle out to the pads to tinkle. A LOT. Those pads get changed all day long too, buy stock in pee pads NOW.

Usually, the pups live in the pool this way for 5 weeks or so, but with this many, there just won't be space. They will need room to run and play.

Last fairypages 023

I'm thinking about moving my car outside and turning the whole garage into a nursery for when we aren't with the dogs.  When we are hanging out with them, they can be in the house, or taking over the studio like a pack of hooligans.

At night, I can bring them back in the house to their pool.

Last fairypages 015

I'm treasuring this time of them being tiny, bottle feedings, and babyhood.

It goes by so fast. Just look at Dewdrop, she's a big girl now.

Or at least SHE thinks so! She and her Gypsy mommy have picked out a pup to keep. They are renting a new home that allows pets, and has a small fenced yard.  And a passle of little kids ready to cuddle the baby!

Newborns 060

I'm back from my trip and Twinkle was a busy girl while I was gone. So was Aunt Sandy! I was glad she was here to take over, having an RN in charge of the difficult birth was a godsend.

Newborns 011

The difficulties arose from Twinkle having NINE pups to deliver!

After the second, not much happened. We'd visited our vet for directions earlier, read all the dog birthing info we could, and Sandy watched countless videos on whelping puppies.  So, when labor stopped progressing, she knew to take Twinks in to the doc.

Newborns 055

A couple more were born there, but the sonogram showed a total of eight babies (a rare number of pups for someone of Twinkle's size). Our vet said that the mama needed to be taken to Kansas City to the emergency vet for a C-section.

All of this drama was happening while I was driving to Indiana.  At first, all was going well, but as the prognosis kept changing,  I started to think I should turn around. Of course, I was already almost to Indiana about the time we heard that things weren't going well at all and that surgery might be needed.

I talked to the vet over the phone, and was told that if Twinkle had a C-section, she would have to have all the babies taken away from her, they would need to be completely hand raised.

Newborns 039

I called friends and family to arrange some help for Sandy, but decided I should also be headed back to be on bottle patrol too.

But when Sandy and Lyric (the owner of the pup's father) got to the ER, those vets had a different story.  They thought the babies could be delivered naturally and decided to keep Twinkle over night for observation.  And they said there were NINE, not eight!

At this point, I was a bit of a wreck, and before I had a wreck on I70, I decided to get some rest, get a hotel room and make a decision in the morning.

Newborns 050

Morning brought great news!  Twinkle had delivered all 9 little ones, each healthy and strong!

The ER vets said that they had never seen a Yorkie have that many babies. Our Twinkle is not a teensy girl, but she is also not a giant Yorkie. She is about 9 lbs, which is still a pretty small dog.

Her little body can't support that many youngens.  She needed IV calcium and is on supplements too.   We still need to bottle feed the babies, but they are also able to nurse and Twinkle can take care of them with our help.

Since Sandy wasn't completely on her own with with care and feeding of the pups, and Twinkle could keep them warm and clean, Beth, our Gypsy, and Lyric could come by to help, I decided to go on to Indiana for the reunion.

431539_10151099666304477_1770272850_n

It was not an easy decision.  But it was our late father's turn to host the dinner, it was up to my sisses and I to be the hostesses in his place. I had a car full of supplies and table cloths, my sisters had taken vacation days that had been requested way in advance, and my husband was flying in on Saturday to attend and drive home with me.

Sandy was a trouper and went into full on RN mode, staying up around the clock to make sure those puppies were full and cared for. She was much better than I would have been, she devoted herself totally to the newborns.

I had a great time with my family, and the reunion was wonderful.  I was able to relax and enjoy it, knowing that all the dogs were in good hands and that I'd be home with them soon to snuggle (and stay up all night feeding them myself soon enough!)

We cut our trip short and drove straight back to KS as soon as the big family dinner ended and we got cleaned up, getting home in time for a midnight feeding.

Newborns 033

Monday night, we had our own big family dinner with the grands over to see the puppies and to thank Sandy for being a hero and saving all the babies.  Everyone raised their cup to toast Aunt Sandy and thank her for all she did.  I owe her more than a steak dinner, she was a huge help during a rough time!

Thanks, Sandy!! And congrats, Twinkle!!

And good bye sleep for a while… these 6 boys and 3 girls will keep us hoppin.

Happy birthday Sugarwings!

Leandra's 6th birthday 043
Sugarwings' birthday was such a fun day for us.  We went to lunch at T. Rex to see the dinosaurs, but at first, Dewdrop wasn't sure if we should go in. Once she realized that there were cute little baby dinosaurs there, she was fine.( I don't know why the restaurant keeps the biggest, scariest one of all right inside the door to greet everyone.  I guess they want to test the kids right up front to see if they can withstand the atmosphere before they waste table space incase the little ones have to leave before the food comes?  If the kids can get past the giant monster at the door, they must be brave enough to sit and eat there.)

Sugarwings has always loved it there.  Dewdrop took some convincing, but not much, She was careful to not look at the bigger ones, but was happy to give hugs and kisses to the colorful, cartoony beasts.

PicMonkey Collage

We walked around the shopping center, and let the kids run around on the Yellow Brick Road sidewalks.  It was a favorite pastime for Sugarwings when she was little. Now that she is turning 6, I wanted to take her there again before she was too big to enjoy it.

Hopefully, she'll never be too old to be silly with Grams.

And honestly, she is happy anywhere she goes.  Her idea of fun is just exploring. It can be along a yellow sidewalk that takes her imagination to Oz. or just sitting in the grass meeting whatever bug crawls by.  It all entertains her.

Fairy baby
Dewdrop had a good time on our day out too. And I was pleased to spend time with my boy, remembering when he was a little guy and running way ahead of me wherever we went, just like his daughter does now.

Leandra's 6th birthday 035
A pretty table cloth, a pitcher of Chocolate milk so that the kiddos could pour their own refills, and letting the baby join the big kids table all made a special meal for the birthday girl that night for dinner.

Leandra's 6th birthday 042
We also covered a big chair and tied balloons to it, creating a birthday throne when cake and ice cream time came.   Then, her cupcake was served on a musical, wind up cake plate that plays "Happy Birthday", but not very good. Its kind of old and wonky, but still a fun tradition for us.

Leandra's 6th birthday 031
It was all I could do, to not be teary all day.  I can't believe she is six now.

A feathered guest at a fancy wedding

Dew Drop, family, Hens, Sugarwings

Wediing gown 013
Thanks for all of your visits during the studio tour, I know I've shown the room dozens of times before, so I wondered if anyone would even care to see it again.  I tried to post photos of different parts of the room than in the past, but some of it was a bit repetitive.

Wediing gown 006
Sugarwings was with me almost every day last week, and luckily we had a break in the weather and were able to enjoy the outdoors for  a change.  Although, I'm not sure if the cooler air was really cool enough for gloves….

Fort 006

We like to sit in the garden, under an archway covered in vines.  In the past, I used to trim them, but now, we let them grow wild and crazy, so that we have an enclosed area to play in. Its shady and cozy.  When we sit under the low hanging branches, we feel like we are hidden away in a world of our own.  Its a good spot for picnics, hiding from ogres, and for weddings.

Wediing gown 024
We had a special guest at this garden wedding.  One of our cuddly, Rhode Island Reds decided to join us in the arbor clubhouse.

Wediing gown 021
These sweet, little hens are becoming part of the family.  Its so fun to have them follow us around the yard, curious about what we might be doing in case it involves crumbs of any kind.

Of course, ask me about mid- January when I have to slosh through drifts of snow to go take care of the birds a couple times a day, if I still love them as much.

Wediing gown 003
The chickens are NOT doing their job of eating enough of the bugs. So far, they've been great with grasshoppers in the flower beds, and we've not had to use any pesticides at all in our veggie garden. But they haven't eaten a single chigger from the yard.  We are all suffering from chigger attacks, and Sugarwings and I have tried to play only on the paved or gravel areas to avoid getting chewed up.

We are hoping to buy some Guinea fowl, they are champion chigger eaters, but we can't find any full grown hens around to buy.

Every time I wake up at 3am scratching, I swear I'd pay a fortune to own a couple chigger eating birds.  Anyone know where I can find some?

We don't like the idea of spritzing the little fairy grand babies with bug spray at all. Especially since I coat my ankles with it and still get bitten.

But this year is the worst I've ever seen for pests. I suspected it would be when we had such a  glorious, mild winter.  As much as I hate snow and cold, it serves a purpose, and does help keep the bugs down.

So, I'll try to remember that when I feel like complaining about going out to take care of hens in the cold this winter.    It probably won't shut me up, though, I most likely will still grumble about the cold.

Yummy Bread Machine bread – too, too good

Dew Drop, fairies, family, Food and Drink, Hens, paintings

Under table 019
This week has been a hodge podge.  I repainted a fairy, finished another, signed up a TON of people for the swap (yay! This will be a fun one!), babysat my own little fairies, and baked a TON of bread.   I might just weigh a TON more now that I've experimented with my new bread machine a bit…

Under table 015
As the smell of fresh baked bread fills the house, my Sister-In-Law, Sandy, and I do all we can to stop ourselves from standing over it, each clutching a stick of butter in our greedy little paws.

You know you've baked too much, when you realize the 5 lb bag of flour is empty.

I'm not a measuring type, but I've tried to approximate measures, so that the machine will be filled with the right amounts, and not overflow.  And I've learned that as much as I love the pure whole wheat flour, it can be a bit heavy for most people.  I've switched to mostly whole wheat, and about a 1/3 bread flour.  Its lighter and breadier.

Pure whole wheat does make a good, solid, filling peasant type bread though.

Here is my favorite made up recipe (sort of- my own measurements are eyeballed)

Yummy Bread (as Sugarwings calls it)

1-1/2 cup leftover coffee, still warm, not hot (I drink Starbucks Vanilla)

1/2 cup organic clover honey

3/4 cup dried mixed berries

1/2 cup roasted pumpkin seeds

1/2 cup roasted sunflower seeds

2 cups whole wheat flour (organic)

1 cup unbleached organic bread flour

2-1/4 tsp bread machine yeast

Dump into machine in that order. From what I hear, you want the liquid on the bottom and the yeast on the top.  I don't know why.

Bake on the whole wheat setting.

Stand by with your stick of butter so you are ready when the bread is done! (notice that I didn't add oil or butter to the mix? I forgot to, and liked it better this way, it was moist and soft, and I put enough butter on top while its hot, that I do not need any inside the loaf too)

Bread machines are too, too easy to use.  It takes me less than five minutes to make a loaf of deliciousness.  If I keep this up, I will become housebound, too big to fit through the front door.

On Thursday, it got up to 107 degrees.  In June.  Yes, 107. Dang!

I had both little girls here, and we really did try to play outside. We turned on the hose, made mud pies and stayed in the shade till almost noon. I was proud of myself for staying out that long.  As soon as lunch time came, I had the perfect excuse to give up on the great outdoors and get into the air conditioning.

Under table 009
Then, we did the same thing we do on blizzardy days. We built a fort of blankets over the dining room table, filled the floor with pillows and climbed in to watch movies and read books.  We also brought markers, and drew all over the under belly of the table. Sugawings traced her foot and I dated it.

Under table 003
It was too hot for the chickens today too, when I turned on the hose to water the flower beds, a couple of them dove in to cool off in the water.

Under table 018

There hasn't been a lot of time for making things other than bread this week. I did finish a few book covers for the swap, I need to keep on top of that and make a few here and there, so I'm not swamped with too many at the last moment.  We are at about 60 or so right now.

I hope you'll join us if you haven't yet.

A girls weekend

Dew Drop, Sugarwings

Ara sleepover 014
Dewdrop had a sleepover with us this weekend.  And while she was here, she wanted to help me in the kitchen with everything I did.

Ara sleepover 040
I learned with Sugarwings, that few things entertain a baby longer than playing with water.  A bucket and a plastic fish, a sink full of bubbles, or a sponge and a bowl, all were endlessly entertaining to her.  Looks like her little sis feels the same way.

The only difference is,  now I have wooden floors instead of tile.  Which changes my carefree attitude about sloshing around.

We still enjoy splishing and splashing, but I have to be a bit more vigilant about where the puddles end up.  Dewdrop was surrounded by a pile of towels today while washing dishes for me.  It didn't interfere with her fun, but it saved some sogginess for my flooring.

Ara sleepover 047
Both girls came to spend the day, and I can't imagine a better way to spend a Sunday.

Ara sleepover 059
I did manage some time to work on a painting, but its not something I can show you, till the person who commissioned it shows it herself.   I hate having something new and not posting it! That's not like me.  I write my posts the way I talk to my friends, the minute something crosses my mind, I say it, usually without filters.  Not showing something is a lesson in self control that I could probably use…

I've also started a couple more fairy paintings, I'm on a painting kick right now.  I've got some more vintagey ideas for the Faerie Book Swap cover.

If you are interested in joining, click on the button on my side bar for more info, or scroll down a couple of posts and read about the details.

Misc 013

Sugarwings is now a proud graduate of Pre K.

Misc 003
She was so excited to get her diploma that she flew through the air to show it to her mommy.

Misc 017
The celebration was at the playground of her school, and Dewdrop enjoyed playing on the big kid's toys. Her Daddy liked it too.

Misc 021
There were carnival games, cotton candy, and lots of laughs.

Kc zoo may 12 023
We've been having plenty of fun lately, we made a trip to the KC Zoo too.

Kc zoo may 12 016
Personally, its not my favorite zoo. The Topeka one is ideal for small kids, and the Omaha fantasy world zoo is amazingly fun and entertaining with what feels like adventures, not cages.

But the one in KC offers lots of things to ride.

Kc zoo may 12 019
We bought the arm bands that give everyone unlimited access to the merry-go-round, boat, sky chair, train, and tram.  But the place is so big that we didn't get to ride all of them even once, let alone over and over.

Kc zoo may 12 013
Mostly, the two little grand fairies wanted to be carried everywhere. Their pal, Sara, was their favorite ride.  She was happy to have one or the other little girl in her arms all day.

Kc zoo may 12 031
Daddy did his share of carrying them too.

Doesn't my son look handsome with his newly shaven face? Its been so long since I'd seen him without a beard, I'd forgotten what he looked like freshly "mowed" as Sugarwings called it.

Kc zoo may 12 032
The monkeys were extra friendly and would put their hands up to the glass like they wanted to touch the humans visiting them.

It looks like its going to be  a wonderful summer!  My favorite time of year.

My own thoughts on blogging and Making a project my own

Dew Drop, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art, We're having a party, Workshops

Thanks again for all your comprehensive and thoughtful comments on blogs and the changing blogworld. My theory is that our nitch of blog friends is going to keep on enjoying the blogs and pals they have come to know, as well as exploring new ones they meet through links and mentions on their present faves.

Maybe blogging is not as big as it was, but it did grow with a BOOM when it took off!

And maybe Its not growing like it was, people tire of writing, lose purpose or move onto bigger and better things.

Also, younger groups of tech savy net surfers might not have the patience to visit and read blogs.  Maybe for their group, tweeitng and pinning gives them the quick fix they need.

But it looks to me like my peeps, the ladies who "get" each other and have found each other online are not looking to lose contact.  I think that there is still plenty of blog love to be shared between us.

Maybe we don't always stop to comment, like we did when we first became involved with blogging, but when there is a sad incident, or a reason to congratulate, or a subject that will make you think, our blog buddies are there to share it and do step in to leave their thoughts.  I might have 2,000 plus hits on my blog in one day (not including the people who read it through facebook, google reader, etc.) and still only get 3 or 4 comments. But, when my dog died, and I was heartbroken (still am) so many of you came by to ease my pain.

I have NO plans on leaving. Like I mentioned in my post about this subject, I made time to sit and write my posts, even when I was not back in the swing of real work after so much time away.  Blogging isn't work to me, its become a big part of my life.  A daily journal almost.

I'll be posting away long after all the readers are gone.  My pal Laurie and I were saying that when we are in nursing homes, we'll be writing about making necklaces out of leftover macaroni  from lunch, and how to dye things with our chocolate pudding.

Our classes at the event in CA were useful and pretty.  I've already got mine in use.  Kecia gave us a lamp shade frame and some goodies to foof it up, then turned us loose. I brought some extras from home to add to mine, since I had a spot in mind for it in my living room and wanted a certain look.

For sale 512 030
And my pal, Lori was ready to share too. She gave me this teensy crocheted basket to tie onto the lace. I glued a button with an "N" on it for Nathan, and filled it with crystal beads.

The fun of the design is adding all the little tidbits here and there to the trailing lace.  I brought chandy crystals and backed them with floral wallpaper, and a few other things, like this tiny wooden egg.

And of course, I needed a fairy.

Kecia had a series of shades she had done herself as examples, I wish I'd taken some photos of hers.  She is one of the most talented artists I've met in a while and I really enjoyed her booth on Vendor night.

She is also an adventurer and is taking a few weeks to travel from her NJ home to CA and back for Tiffany's.  Looks like she'll be able to stop and visit Kansas on her return trip, and I look forward to having her here.

Another class from the event got a slight alteration from me too. I tend to rework the classes with all of my own supplies, and this one was a big change.  I had the watercolor sketch for the banner backdrop with me and wanted it to be featured instead of a picture of Audrey on the scrapbook we made, so I turned the book horizontal to make it fit, and changed the color scheme up a bit.

For sale 512 041
Knowing that we were making a scrapbook, I packed photos of my loved ones, and lots of vintage papers.

For sale 512 045
The scrap book papers were all black and cream, I covered some of them in my own colors, but still using the shapes and sizes provided, and tying in some of the blacks when I could.

For sale 512 044
The flowers behind Dewdrop were part of the kit.

For sale 512 047
And I really liked the shape of this paper. I used the provided piece, and covered the left side of it, added the photo and flowers, then let the rest of the original paper peek out on the right.

There were two other projects over the weekend, I'll show those later. For now, I'll leave you with more scrappy pages from this class.

I was diligent about getting my book done, I knew that I wouldn't get back to it once I got home and it had been way too long since I'd made a grandchild photo album. And yes, it was finished before the weekend ended! While swap night was going on, I sat at my table spot to cut and glue away the evening.

While we are talking nests, I thought I'd show you my banner from the Birdsong swap I joined. I wish I could have been a part of all of them, but I was a little overwhelmed at the time. There were some really great swaps, I was impressed. And so glad that I was in this one!  I usually try to join one swap whenever I go to an arty event, because I spend so much time oohing and ah-hing when I watch the trades getting opened and end up jealous over the beautiful loot everyone gets.

These letters were temporarily clipped to my curtain rod in the kitchen, but I kind of like them there, and they might hang out that way for a while.

Dew Drop, fairies, family, games, Sugarwings

April 058
I had some much needed Sugarwings time over the weekend, and as always, she brought lots of smiles to our house.

April 059
She helped me with some sugar cookies, although she doesn't realize that her batch never made it into the main pile of goodies. I wouldn't call myself a germ-a-phobe, (then again, some people do think that), but I'm always really careful about stuff kids bake.  I separate the dough, give her some of her own to work with and do whatever disgustingly fun stuff she can think of to do to it.

I think our littlest fairy will be enjoy baking with us too. Dewdrop got out of the tub the other day, saw me making cookies, and ran naked as fast as she could to her play kitchen to get a spoon, and zoomed to me demanding to help!

April 073
Sugarwings and I also played dress up with the wedding gowns I found in a closet and got out to sell at Birdsong.

(bad photo, sorry)

April 070

The train was her favorite part of the gown.

April 037
She also helped me with my latest obsession, Drawsomething.

April 038
She likes to add the finishing touches to my pictures.

April 089
On Saturday, I took a break from working on Birdsong set up, and spent the entire day with my handsome husband.

We cleaned our old, beat up pontoon boat and got it ready for the lake.  On the way there, we tried to save a few bucks by filling the tank at the gas station instead of paying Marina prices.

April 090
He wasn't quite sure it was worth the effort, but did it for me.  I'm the cheapskate in the family. But hey, that extra dollar a gallon adds up!

We also ran errands around town, went out for a sushi dinner and saw Hunger Games (my second time, and I'd be happy to see it a third time)

Beautiful weather, accomplishments made, great company, good food, and a handsome man by my side. Not a bad weekend.

April 034
He's a pretty hot grandfather, huh?

April 091
There was even time to play a few more games of Drawsomething.

April 092
Not as many as I would like, though.

April 094
If I didn't have Birdsong to get ready for, I think I'd be playing this game way, way too much!

April 026
By the time I'm set up for Birdsong, I hope I still have energy left to play, but I have a feeling I'll be doing more of this!!
