Could I describe Christmas as both laid back and lively at the same time?

C9330B72-91CA-4AFC-AF21-8AD89C9C8481

Maybe what I mean is that we had a lot of fun with simple pleasures.

We had a build your own calzone/pizza bar, so everyone got their favorites and it was a group effort for Christmas Eve dinner.

I chopped and sautéed most of the toppings the day in advance, then Ryan helped with the rest.

We had a house full for both days, with almost the entire family sleeping over, staying up late to watch holiday movies, using the hot tub to relax, and playing the games that were given as gifts.

I think what made it all so wonderfully sweet was that there was nothing at all formal about it.  There was a nice, casual flow about the holiday.

We went light on gifts, with easy meals, took a few walks, had a wonderful time with everyone under one roof.

Sugarwings has plans for surprising her lil sis with elf pranks every day. We will see some movies, hang out in the studio to make things with all the new art supplies they got, and of course, snack away on those beautifully decorated cookies.

Actual grand fairies

Making Sugarplum fairies has kept me so busy that I am just now wrapping gifts, today.

My husband is in Chicago at a Chiefs game, Ryan is at work, Sugarwings with her mom, and Dewdrop won’t be arriving with her daddy til tomorrow.

D689B172-B0A1-496A-B518-550C3386A924

That means I have an empty dining room to spread out gifts and get them packaged up. I just finished my shopping yesterday, on a fun day out with some of the family, letting them choose their own pressies instead of trying to surprise them.

As much as I love surprises, sometimes you just gotta let them do the picking.  And even though I’d heard that yesterday was the busiest shopping day of the year, I still preferred strolling through stores with people I love and going out to lunch over ordering from Amazon at home.

It felt more like Christmas that way.  Oh, I used Amazon for quite a bit, but a shopping date was like the icing on the Christmas cookie to top off my holiday festivities.

I also made some gifts, like this Sully Sugarplum Fairy for a great niece.  It is as pink, glittery, and gaudy as possible for a very sweet lil princess.

I used the painted brown paper table covers from a Snowbird’s Song as a background.    I also made use of it as wrapping paper this year.

Speaking of wrapping paper, I’d better get to work. I am sitting at the table having my morning coffee, surrounded by stacks of gifties and rolls of paper.

Happy Thanksgiving

celebrations, Dew Drop, family

As years pass and circumstances change, so do family holidays.  I did not expect to have a big Thanksgiving dinner this year, but was happily surprised when we could get everyone together the Sunday before.

E0800BD6-0A6E-44C5-ABBE-4C72B078B2AF

After getting back late Friday night from my Florida Sister Trip, I woke up to Dewdrop and her dad here for  visit.

DCF260EF-3023-463D-9930-C0472744D421

We celebrated with a breakfast cocoa party in front of a Christmas program. Then started whipping up and prepping for a family dinner on Sunday.

9A6FADC7-154E-4C9D-8A3F-CB091B7ABD65

We only had a few days with her, so got as much squeezed into that time as we could.  We weren’t together on her birthday, so took a trip to Target for her to choose a gift.

6190D83C-26F0-4E63-9187-41E52DBFB38B

We snuck in as many cuddles as we could, went to see Frozen 2, had a couple of dance parties, and crafted.  The poor kid got sick while here, so much of the time she was napping and watching movies.

0CC0478A-A4D0-4101-B817-AD72066C4902

They are headed back east today, and it might be a while til I see her again.  I feel thankful that she was here, no matter how long.

At the airport Friday night, this tree was available to add a leaf with your thankful messages to it.  I wrote one that said, “people I love”

And I wasn’t surprised to find that many of the leaves expressed similar sentiments.   Family was repeated many times.  I hope that all of those travelers writing about their family were on their way to see them and be together.

Thanksgiving Day itself will be a quiet one this year for us, but the date on the calendar isn’t what counts.  I am lucky I had a family day, and some time with my little one.

I will take that any day of the year.

Our Cottage Christmas

celebrations, Dew Drop, family

IMG_3046

Our Dewdrop was home for the holiday and we made the most of the time with her. Lots of snuggles happened, lots of fun too.

IMG_3052

Christmas was a repeat of Thanksgiving. It was such a good day, why not do it again? We made gingerbread houses, walked in the woods, laughed, and ate together.

A perfect family day- plus presents!

IMG_3051

Ki Ki made this house from graham crackers.

Yes, she is skilled in everything she does. Give her a bit of fabric and you get a custom pair of shorts, made without a pattern and fit perfectly. Give her a box of cookies and you get a Victorian mansion.

This is just the beginning of the mansion, it turned out just wonderful.

IMG_3102

Just like our Thanksgiving, we had ideal weather.

IMG_3097

Just right for enjoying some time outdoors and working up an appetite for homemade pot pie. We had vegan and chicken varieties, and I was smart enough to make them up a couple of days early so I could pop them into the oven and enjoy our time together instead of being stuck in the kitchen.

IMG_3055

Because no one wants to feel trapped at Christmas…

IMG_3056

Well, most people wouldn't.

IMG_3075

Our gingerbread homes made a pretty centerpiece for the dinner.

IMG_3069

We had more than we could even fit onto the table.  Now that the parties are over, we will load them up, and take them out to the woods as a gift to the fairies.

We have enough of them to set up whole communities for the fey.

IMG_3111

And we are up for any excuse to go for a walk in the woods together.

PS- I am thrilled to announce that I will be teaching a class in Florida at Karen Hillman's Cozy Castle!!!!!!!!!

I'll be posting photos and more info soon.  I hope to see you in sunny Florida for a day of friendship, creativity, and fun with my ruffly wings and romantically inspired autograph book projects

A North Carolina Birthday Girl

celebrations, Dew Drop, family, Travel, We're having a party

56409007424__04C79791-F233-4B16-8675-EB72B3919367

My husband had a business trip to North Carolina, and while he was there, he offered to snap up Dewdrop from her Asheville home and bring her to KS for Thanksgiving. Since he'd be getting  her on her birthday, I couldn't miss the event and had to come along to celebrate with them.

IMG_2351 IMG_2352

IMG_2353 IMG_2355

Before we scooped her up, we spent a night in Raleigh and ate a fancy meal at the City Club there.

(That last photo might look as tasty as the others, but is a light fixture, not candy.  And the first one?  That is candy!  Cotton candy pork belly appetizers, wowzers!)

IMG_2366

And we had a scenic drive to Boone where we passed through some misty, Christmas tree farms.

IMG_2370

We stayed at Banner Elk, with Rich's Mom and brother, at their mountain house with this pretty view.

IMG_2394

It changed to this overnight!  Even prettier.

IMG_2409

After our zig zag trip from Raleigh to Boone to Asheville, we drove to Charlotte and visited a nephew and his sweet baby. They made our Dewdrop feel very special with some birthday surprises.

IMG_2424 IMG_2425

They even treated us to a night at the trampoline play place. I didn't think I'd be doing any jumping, but once I saw how much fun the rest of the group was having, I had to start hopping around myself, and bounced around for almost an hour and a half, hating to end when it was time to go.

This is my new favorite thing to do!

IMG_2430

The next morning, our thoughtful nephew made some Mickey shaped pancakes to keep the party going for the birthday girl before we flew home to deliver her to her family who had been missing her for way too long.

We will be seeing her again at Christmas, and while I'm heartbroken not to have her daily, I'm very happy to be able to visit with our North Carolina relatives when we do the kid-switcheroo.   It was a lovely trip.

Summer Fun

Dew Drop, family, Sugarwings

IMG_0103

The Grand Fairies and I had a little hitch in our summer plans, with my inner ear issues.  We had to cut back a smidge.

IMG_0101

Finally, I was able to get out of the house (and felt like I'd crawled out of a dark pit, after so long of feeling bad).  They'd kept me company while I was down, we watched some baking competition shows and had our own contests with playdoh creations, and some ice cream concoctions.  We had fun, but desperately needed a day out, I'd been in front of the TV for far too long.

IMG_0111

So, when I finally felt up to driving, we headed to the zoo.  And spent about 8 hours there.

It is a small zoo, too.

And we didn't even see all of it.  But what we did do, we did thoroughly!  We spent lots of time on the things we enjoyed, lingered over lunch while watching a baby giraffe, and they spent some time in the kids' zone, while I relaxed on a shady park bench with a good book.

IMG_0113

The water flume where treasure hunters could mine for gemstones in bags of sand and gravel was a big hit.  We also discovered that not all of the other kids were as dedicated to nabbing every last stone, and dropped quite a few in the mulch or in the bottom of the rushing water. Over the course of the afternoon,  Sugarwings found as many crystals in the mulch as she did in the bag of dirt we purchased.

Yep, she was pretty into it.

IMG_0109

We met some new friends too.

IMG_0105

It was just the day out that I needed.

A good start to summer fun

Dew Drop, family, Sugarwings

IMG_5042

The grand fairies and I have a summer plan that includes daily regular crafting (well dur)  as well as a special craft project, like pour painting, when they are with me plus a weekly outing.

IMG_5043

Last week, we chose Crown Center in KC for our day out.

IMG_5048

It has been a favorite of ours for years, there is always a lot going on, and we never have quite enough time there.  They have asked to go back for another trip later on this summer too, so we can see Legoland and Sealife.

IMG_5113

We spent some time enjoying the fountains, then saw a play, "Goosebumps."

IMG_5136

Afterwards they explored the kid area with the changing theme. In the past there has been fairy tales, Wizard of Oz, recycling, science, etc.  Right now, it is Trivial Pursuit, with facts about each state.

IMG_5126

It is always interesting, and always free.

You are never too old to try out the exhibits, huh?

IMG_5132

Actually, I found a dark corner that was set up with two adirondack chairs for star gazing, and I spent most of my time back there reading a book while the kiddos checked out the other 49 states.  I'm not sure which state I was parked in, but it was nice and homey.

IMG_5148

Afterwards, we spent time crafting at Kaleidoscope.  (Free also, sponsored by Hallmark)

IMG_5149

You can paint, melt crayons in a black light room and paint with the wax, create a crown, or a puzzle.  There is so much to do there, one session never seems long enough. But the place is downtown KC, and I'm leery about staying too long and running into bad traffic at 5 going home. The girls understand that sometimes I can act like a little, old lady and are fine with moving on to something else to fit in what we can.

IMG_5117

They always like to eat at the Crayola Cafe, which is seriously aimed at kids.  The adult side of the menu seems like a kid menu too, but I make up for a not so great lunch by having a decadent cupcake at Small Cakes afterward.

IMG_5147

We toured the Hallmark visitors center where you can make a bow. (free)

IMG_5144

And we met a children's book author who talked to the girlies about his stories.

IMG_5157

Yep, we will probably go back again this summer.  It might have to become a regular thing for us if this heat doesn't break.  Zoos and other outings don't sound like as much fun on 100 degree days.  And that adirondack chair is tempting me and my book to return….

Fun with Fairies at Make it with Michaels

Dew Drop, Sugarwings

IMG_3533

These two love to go to Michael's Kids Crafts class on Saturdays.

Funny, they have more art supplies at home than they will ever get to the bottom of, and have encroached so much upon my studio that sometimes they have more space out there than I do.

IMG_3532

Still, they love going to Michaels and playing with different supplies.

I sure understand, I certainly don't turn down a chance to add to my stash of goodies to work with and am thrilled to get a craft day with good friends. There is something about working on a project while talking to other creative types that make it extra special.

IMG_3501

On this day, the little girl across the table was practicing for her part in an upcoming play, and all the kids joined in on the songs she was singing.

Pretty

dang

cute.

IMG_3505

We never outgrow Crown Center and Kaleidoscope

Dew Drop, Sugarwings

IMG_3386

I've been taking Sugarwings to Crown Center for 8 years now.

IMG_9654

Our first time she was barely past being a toddler.  They have the coolest, most artistic, interactive play area and it changes themes periodically.  We've seen the Fairytale village three times, have been to a recycling workshop, visited Oz, and many,  many more. adventures that Hallmark has sponsored there.

IMG_3416

Right now, it is set up as "Funville," a career fair.

You can work in an ER…

IMG_3428

Be a surfer…

IMG_3405

A baker…

IMG_3432

Be on a TV news show…

IMG_3423

Or teach…

IMG_3413

There are also opportunities to be a fireman, astronaut, president, rodeo bull rider, or a bumble bee bear.

A bumble bee bear?

Hmmm.  Don't really get this one.

You could even crawl into a tunnel and mine for gems.  Or be a magician and pull a rabbit out of a hat. Both are not top professions in today's world, but real jobs none the less.

Bumble Bee Bear, though.  Seriously?

IMG_3402

There is a lot to do and see at Crown Center, including Sealife and Legoland, as well as the free activities like the Funville career center we went to and Kaleidoscope.

IMG_3391

Hallmark owns it and I can't say enough about how much we appreciate what they do for the kids that come here.

IMG_3397

Never ending art supplies, colorful, exciting rooms to explore, and as much creating as you can jam pack into 45 minutes of fun.

IMG_3385

We try to go a couple of times a year.  I don't know why we don't go more often. It is great on cold, blustery days when we are tired of being cooped up.

IMG_3395

And ideal for birthday parties too. There is even free parking.  We go to see plays at the Coterie Theater for kids, eat at the Crayola cafe, draw and color in the Crayola shop, and basically make a big day out of it.

I know I don't outgrow the experience. I sure hope that the grandfairies will still go with me for at least a few more years.

Some holiday fun

celebrations, Dew Drop, dogs, family, Sugarwings

IMG_3064

My goal for December is to round up all of the Christmas fun I can find, wrangle, or create.  I do not say no to an invitation, and I try to do a lot of inviting to others too.

Luckily, I have a couple of partners in my quest for holly jolly joy.

IMG_3049

We gathered up all the sisses and a buddy for a night out to see Beauty and the Beast at Theatre Lawrence.

IMG_3047

And we have non stop craft-a-thons by the Christmas tree or in the cardboard cottage.

IMG_2998

And of course, delicious cocoa parties that come afterwards.

IMG_3080

The rule around here is "First one up turns on all of the tree lights", so the house always feels festive.

IMG_3083

After the holidays end, and the decor comes down, I think it is the lights that I miss the most of all the decorations.  Sometimes, I leave some white lights over the windows thru January as a transition to help me survive the end the celebrating.

IMG_3069

For now, I'm still revelling in the joy of it all.
And in the cookies.  Maybe the only thing better than white twinkle lights throughout the house is decorating and eating sugar cookies.

IMG_3061

Especially in good company!
