100 mushies, but more to go

drawing, mushrooms

SavingPNG

I might have made a couple mushrooms. And the best part was playing with them afterward and arranging them on the shelves.

SavingPNG

My goal was to have at least 100 completed, and there were already about 20 set up at my booth in Good Juju.

SavingPNG

It took a few weeks of off and on crafting, because I felt like I wasn’t getting very many full days in the studio.

SavingPNG

My friends meet weekly for an afternoon mosaic group, which is an ideal time to chat with buddies and work on small projects like these.

SavingPNG

I often have other commitments on the Fridays the group gathers, so I got maybe 3 play dates to bring schroomies to there.

SavingPNG

Then I was able to scoop out a few days of studio time.

SavingPNG

Once I can set aside big chunks of a day, a lot can happen, quickly!

SavingPNG

Zap, 80 little mushrooms in a variety of colors, done and ready to go.

SavingPNG

I even had time to play around with some new techniques  for the gills.

SavingPNG

At this point, this style takes a bit longer for me, so I didn’t create many this way.  I needed to get my goal met for a couple of orders.  Once I have done a few of these honey comb gills, I think I’ll get quicker at it and can make more this way.

SavingPNG

I will be sitting down to craft another 25-30 or so, because out of the collection I have finished, quite a few sold already and I’m saving the Poison Toadstools (black or orange, some purple or acid green) for my own Halloween display.  Apparently, I did not set my goal high enough, but the order of 60 isn’t due til September, so I can look forward to more fun mushie days in the studio.

A craft day to crow about

dogs, drawing, family, guncles

IMG_2348
Guncle Randy and I had an excellent craft day together.

IMG_2351

We both worked on crowns, I painted some of my book page drawings, and helped him with a base coat on a violin he wants to embellish.

SavingPNG

He had a couple bridal gowns to share, so I cut those up.  He is using some of that on his violin too.

SavingPNG

It was a lot for one day, but we jammed in as much fun as we could, and made time to take pictures of our hand crafted crowns on the heads of his many garden friends.

SavingPNG

On our furry friends too.

SavingPNG

So many heads to fill with royal toppers.

SavingPNG

This guy looks like he is ready for his kiss.

SavingPNG

So does this tiny guy.

SavingPNG

It was a joy to be outside, with sunshine and flowers.

SavingPNG

And very joyful to have a day with my baby bro to crank out crafts.  I think we had about 13-14 crowns between us.

SavingPNG

To thank him, I painted a crowned crow.

SavingPNG

Yep, it was a day to “crow” about.

Peeps Day

celebrations, cottage, drawing, Food and Drink, friends, holiday decor, wallpaper, We're having a party

7575039A-CB65-40F5-8245-FFF1F2E7684F

We had a little get together for a Peeps craft day at the cottage.  Angie brought a cookie display that was so pretty, it had to immediately become the center piece for our luncheon.

CD07EBA0-901D-4A71-A137-97CB4B273ABD

Sadly, three people had other things come up and couldn’t make it.  Beth offered to bring a salad at the last minute so I wouldn’t have find a side dish for the quiche and homemade bread I’d prepared, which was very helpful of her.

She always makes the best salads, too.

I’d tried my hand at making brioche bread, and while it’s a lot of extra work compared to the kind I typically whip up, I think it is way worth it.  But- there is almost a whole stick of butter in it opposed to the tablespoon of heart healthy oil I usually use, so maybe I won’t make a habit of this decadent bread that feels more like a pastry than a slice of bread.

The remainder of the loaf home was sent with the gal pals, thinking I would save myself from all that butter.  But then, Nora left some of her cream pie tarts, Angie left cookies, and well, here I am having both for breakfast and feeling pretty happy to have them.

Lunch was only a little part of the day, the main event for me is always the projects.

We had vintage album mats and little girls images to make Easter wall hangings.  This one is mine, and since I’d previously made a yellow daffodil one, I wanted a different style, but this might be too dark to be springy.  I also don’t like the green pattern in the brown wallpaper and might peel up the girl to add another layer beneath her.  Maybe some blue ledger paper…

This one is Nora’s next to her cute picnic basket that came full of tarts and fruity, sparkly wine.

(It did not leave full)

Everyone got a hand drawn placemat.  Well, since only half of the group could come, they each got two.

ECAD8905-060C-48D4-98CD-4F1FC1AD0A2F

I might make a habit of these.  When I host real events, not just get togethers, I usually draw on tablecloths.  But lately, instead of plastic table cloths that tickle your legs, and are pretty flimsy anyway, I’ve been covering my work tables in poster board and using large scrap book paper as place markers.

While these quick cartoons aren’t exactly major pieces of art, they are a little different.  Plus, I really like drawing, so, yep, I think it might become something I’ll be doing more of.

Although the square size isn’t ideal for dining room placemats, a rectangle would be better.

Once we finished our Easter pictures, everyone had something else they’d brought to do.  I made some little people to use on something else some day.  Just because I love making little people.  It reminds me of all the hours of playing I spent with paper dolls as a kid.

After the last couple of years that we have had, days like this mean more to me than ever.  It was the best!

Puppy time and me time

Corona virus, dogs, drawing, Goldendoodle Puppies, paintings, Ryan

AC85B657-7317-4680-A250-81559AB12FC8My husband took a little trip this week, and I had pretty laid time.  My watercolors are spread out in the dining room, so I can paint and be near the puppies.

They have kept me company while Rich was away.

Here is a snippet of the painting.  I always start with the eyes.  I’ll show the finished piece once the recipient gets to see it.

Besides painting, going for walks, playing with puppies, and battling an epic ant invasion, I’ve slowly started to work on getting the babies to intermingle.

It starts with a few play dates, then moves on to mixed cuddle puddles.

Although the play dates aren’t much more than naps yet, anyway.

The Sugarbabies have moved into the main part of our home along with the Butterballs.  Sugar is much more possessive of hers than  Honey is, so we are taking this slow, with supervised visitations.  If I am not with them, Shuggie and the little ones go back to the bathroom nest.

Eventually, they will all be too big (and stinky, and I have to admit, they are edging up on that stinky part pretty fast) to be kept in here.
I have a nursery set up in the garage where they will be at night, then they will have the breezeway to hang out in on nice days with access to the yard.

Most of my time with Rich away on his trip, I had Sugarwings here with me.  But I had one day, all to myself for the first time in months.  I missed Rich, since his retirement, and especially since Covid, we have spent all of our days together.

But since Ryan died, I kept thinking I needed a day to just think of him, to be on my own, to not have any “have to’s”. Life is hectic and as people always say- it goes on.

I have been grieving, I have been sad, I have had him on my mind every single minute. There has been a Ryan sized hole in my life, but I haven’t had time just to let that happen. I’ve kept going.
Yesterday, I had my months delayed day. I spent most of it doing things Ryan and I used to do together. I walked with the dogs, played with puppies, and then took more walks. I cleaned the stove top with a razor blade (that was one of his things, he took pride in a job well done, no matter how tedious, he worked with a good attitude and got things done.)

I made a frozen pizza the way Ryan used to make them for me, extra cheese, chopped veggies, black olives, rosemary, and turkey pepperoni. Then, I binge watched one of our favorite shows. I missed his laughs, and our constant conversation commenting on what was happening on the screen, but I enjoyed my day.
I enjoyed thinking about how much fun we used to have together. I thought about the joy he was always able to express about the little things that made him happy. Like a brand new season of a good Netflix show. Pizza night. A walk. A shiny stovetop. Laughing about something silly a dog just did.

Ryan faced difficulties in his life, surviving bullying over his disabilities that left him distrusting people’s intentions toward him. He overcame addictions. He had been taken advantage of. He had suffered in his life. All of this left him with insecurities. But he also found a quiet happiness and satisfaction in hard work and small pleasures. He was a person who appreciated the moment when good things happened.

My day “with Ryan” was appreciated.

It was worth waiting for.

Baby Books for the Butterballs

Books, dogs, drawing, Goldendoodle Puppies, Hand painted, puppies!

I have almost finished the first litter’s baby books.  The finishing touches will be a photo on the front, and notes about the puppy on the inside.

As well as a 30 day free trial of insurance tucked into the back pocket of the book.

Now that the pups are older, I am telling them apart easier.  But that first week?  My head was spinning just trying to see who was who to get their weight charts started.

So, I had sketches and notes for each one.  Someone suggested that they would make good gifts for the new owners, and I agreed.  Since I needed to keep track of info about each pup, I decided to make the paintings into books.

I’ll have the weights and worming/shots schedule in there too.

The paper features honey bees for the puppies’ mom, Honey.

I bought supplies to make them for The Sugarbabies too.  Hers has black and white hearts.

The books can be displayed with the painting showing like this.  And there is space for the new family to add photos too.

What did I find in the paint?

drawing, paintings

IMG_5039

In my last post, I asked if anyone saw anything in this paint pour.  I didn't at that point.

IMG_5039f

But then, I flipped it over. Do you see her?

IMG_0066

There was another fairy lurking in the paint!  All I needed was some black and white ink pens to find her.

She has quite the head of hair, doesn't she?

Mixed media mashups, Acrylic Flow Painting Pours with doodles

drawing, paintings

IMG_0024

Honestly, I haven't been doing much but watching Netflix for over a week, since I had a case of the dizzies. (Vertigo)

IMG_5174

But before that, I was obsessed with doodling over some of the "losers" in my giant stack of poured paint canvases. The paintings don't always turn out as you'd hope, and can be poured over and redone, but man, I was sure going through a lot of paint to produce a bunch of paintings that just looked like backgrounds.

Then, I thought, well hey, lets use them as backgrounds!

This one was the biggest inspiration, I clearly saw a lady's form in the paint.

IMG_5168

See what I mean?

IMG_0018

I'm sorta embarrassed to show you that I even did this one.  Its hideousness was certainly destined for the re-pour pile.  But then, I thought I saw a dragon eye peeking out at me….

IMG_0060

So I painted the eye and got the pens out to draw some scales

Ryan loves it, it is for his apartment.  Which is why I was using reds and blacks in the first place.

IMG_5169

I'd experimented with swirls as I poured this one, and liked it, but it wasn't quite what I wanted.

IMG_5170

I think it came out kind of Beetle-juicy after drawing on it.

IMG_5039 (1)

This one will be next, I think.  I'd added some veins with a toothpick while pouring it, but I think it needs more. So far, I don't see a specific shape in it, do you?

A FREE Valentine coloring page Giveaway for you and some coloring tips

drawing, free images, how to's

IMG_0308

Last week, at craft day with Beth, I decided to draw a Valentine coloring page similar to some I have done for other themes like Birds,  Halloween,  and Snow White.  In the past, I've included them in art journal kits and swaps too, these are ideal to color and add to a book.

Plus, I simply and sincerely LOVE to color them myself!

IMG_0295

My process usually starts with rifling through vintage books to find text to fit my theme, then creating a collage from it.

IMG_1171

"Sunlight and Shade" a book from 1885, had a lovely font and sweet text that fit right in with Valentines.

IMG_0297

See what I mean?

IMG_0299

Mostly, it is just background that gets colored over, but I try to single out special words. This time, inside of hearts.

IMG_0304

When I color my own copies, I leave those words as is, or accent with a clear, Stardust Gelly Roll pen, so they stand out.

(I ADORE those pens!  They leave a sheer sparkle that is subtle and sweet)

IMG_0301

As I color the pictures, I use multiple tools.  There are some tips HERE for the variety that I use for my pages: markers, glitter pens, colored pencils, and white opaque inks

IMG_0310

And HERE are some tips for roses.

IMG_0303

For faces, I recommend colored pencils.  Markers can be harsh.  Ink, even more so.  Of course, there are wonderful Coptic markers that you can use for blending and get a good result, so if you are doing lots of coloring pages with faces and skin tone, it is probably worth it to invest in those tints of markers. But they can be pricey, and I feel like using pencils along with the markers and inks gives the finished piece more interest.

And you can call it "Mixed Media".  Which sounds more impressive than coloring.

IMG_0305

Not that I am bashing coloring!

I love coloring.

Im just saying that the more detail, layering of color, and mix of materials that you use, the more interesting the picture is.

IMG_0307

I cannot do without white opaque markers, sometimes for a little dot of highlight (like in the lovebirds' eyes), or over another color (like in the large, pink flower above), or under a color (like in the blue flower above), or on its own (like the rope braid on the frame above), or outlining words (like on the word, LOVE)

IMG_1170

I also used a wide tip, white opaque marker on some of the background behind the word LOVE.

IMG_1169

My biggest and best tip, though, is to finish off with a fine tip, black marker or pen to go over some of (or most of) the lines after you've colored the page.

IMG_1163

For me, going over the outlines with black, sharpens up the drawing and makes it pop.

IMG_0309

Would you like to give one a try? As a thank you to my readers (and shoppers) I'm offering a free download of the drawing/collage that I've done if you'd like one.

Email me at:

karlanathan@sbcglobal.net

I'll send you the PDF to print over and over to color as many times as you'd like (I've finished three and am working on a fourth right now, they are addictive!)

When I print them, I use a quality paper, either matt photo, or a matt brochure,  not just plain copy paper.  Copy paper can make the marker bleed, and sometimes it tears.

Adult Coloring tips for the Downton Abbey art journal

drawing, how to's, swaps, Television, Tutorials

Coloring page downton sisters 040

The second coloring page promised for the Farewell to Downton art journal swap is finally ready. It was something I thought I'd do on a couple of different trips, and I'd travelled with my drawing tools, but never opened them.  Once I got back to the comfort of my studio, I was able to make time to get some drawing done.

Here is one version of it colored in.

Coloring page downton sisters 041

And here is one more.

There will be two different coloring pages included in the journal each participant will receive, and they will be loose pages. If you want to, feel free to scan them, make multiple copies and try different looks yourself.

Coloring page downton sisters 020

I thought I'd show a few in progress pictures of the pages I did.  For the frame at the top of the picture, I used a gold glitter as a base.

Over that, I highlighted with a gold metallic pen. (not shown in this photo)

Coloring page downton sisters 022

On this frame, I used the gold pen only.

For me, a mix of metallic ink, glitter markers or ink, opaque white ink, markers, and a black liner pen to go over the drawing after it is colored all used together make the page more arty looking than just colored.

And I think that colored pencils make the faces much prettier than markers do.  It is a softer look for skin tones.

Coloring page downton sisters 027

For these sisters, I used a tan/brownish, a peach and a pink.

Coloring page downton sisters 026

The darkest color went where you'd see a shadow.

You can find more tips for faces here.

Coloring page downton sisters 018

For pretty hair, I like to use at least two colors.  The lighter the hair, the more important this is, like on Edith's head. But even Lady Mary got a dark brown with a black marker over it.

Coloring page downton sisters 015

When I color in the eyes, I can lose some of the drawing, so it needs to be added back in.

Coloring page downton sisters 016 Coloring page downton sisters 017

First with a black detail pen to redo the pupils, then with a white opaque pen to add the highlights.

Coloring page downton sisters 029

Much better after those details are added to the eyes.

Coloring page downton sisters 037

The champagne glass was done with the world's best pen, Gelly Roll Stardust Glitter, in clear. That was used on just the wine and the bubbles, then I shadowed the glass with light blue and highlighted it and the bubbles with opaque white.

Coloring page downton sisters 024

These larger roses got a teensy bit more detail than the roses at the top of the page. All were done as I described in this post, But for these, I was more careful with where the darker colors went.

Instead of just blobbing the rose color onto the center of the flowers, I tried to find the shadows on the inside of the petals.  Still, it was a quick process, and not a lot of care went into it, blending over the dark color with a softer pink, then adding one more dark tone to the very center evens it out and makes it pretty, without trying to be too perfect.

Coloring page downton sisters 039

For myself, the most complicated part of this page was the black on black of Carson's uniform.  You could get around this by using gray if you'd rather. Black marker tends to cover up the entire suit and you end up with a big, black blob if you aren't careful.

To avoid this, either use gray marker, or black pencils, or do as I did, and only draw with your black marker up to the very edge of the lines, leaving a margin of white.

Coloring page downton sisters 035

Leaving some white showing throughout the drawing is very important. If you saturate every tiny bit of the paper with color, it will look flat and dead. Going back and adding highlights with a white opaque pen is good to do, and sparkles of glitter help too.

But, with this kind of coloring, leaving some white, really makes the page look better. You can be precise like I had to be with Carson's suit, or you can just have "skips" in your marker lines.  Or purposely leave areas the white of the paper as a color choice.

Coloring page downton sisters 030

In the fox hunt scene, try to remember that colors in the distance fade and are softer than in the foreground. (at this point, the foreground is just background colors, I added deeper tones to the grass later on)

My distance colors were too dark, and tried to fix it with a white opaque marker.

Coloring page downton sisters 031

That helped a little.  But it would have looked better if I'd just remembered that hills and trees far away would be pastel colors.

Coloring page downton sisters 032

For the hunting dogs, I added random spots.

Coloring page downton sisters 036

Oh, and don't forget that the animals' eyes will need a white highlight after coloring them.

Also, the horse can be a danger zone for becoming a big blob, like Carson's suit.  To avoid this, don't try to do a black horse unless you go with brown boots and tackle.  I kind of like the horse I left white the best.

Trying different looks was addicting, I've colored about four of these now.  If you are in the swap, I hope you will scan your black and white drawing before adding color, so you will be able to print more to color and play with.

Coloring tips for pretty roses

drawing, how to's, swaps

Dowager 021

The Dowager's coloring page in our "Farewell to Downton" Art Journal Swap has swags of roses around the banner at the top.  There are also some on the pillow of her chair.  Here are some tips for tinting them.

First rule:

Do NOT feel like you have to color inside of the lines!

Be free and easy with your colors, don't try to be perfect.

Dowager 015

See what I mean?

I take a medium pink, and kind of messily add color to the centers of the flowers.

Dowager 016

Then, fill them in with a light pink.  Notice how some white of the paper still shows through?  Those little "skips" add sparkle and life to the page.

Now, you can be really arty and make sure the skips are intentional and placed exactly where a highlight would hit the petals.  Or, you can just be scribbly and not color the full petal in, either way, you get a pretty feel.

Dowager 017

Over the two lighter pinks, I like to dot a dollop of darker pink into the centers of the blooms.

For my leaves, I have only used two colors of green, my typical way of doing these things is to use three tones.  But this worked too.  Color all the leaves the lightest color of green that you are using, Then add a darker tone to some of the leaves. If you'd like, add a third darker shade to some other ones.

Dowager 020

One thing all of my finished pages have is highlights done with a white opaque pen, like you see on the umbrella and on the feathers.

I also like to use a white opaque marker to soften and blend, like over the brown of the hat.

Metallic pens add dimension, and are even prettier if done over a previously colored area. The umbrella handle is grey marker with silver ink over it.

And one more thing that makes a picture look complete, I have re-outlined some of it in black ink again.  Not the whole thing, some lines are left soft.  Here, I drew around the outside of the umbrella, but not all the small details.  Also, around the top banner and words, not the flowers, around the outside of the chair, and her jacket, again not the small details.

Dowager 019

If you'd like to do your own, these pictures are included in the Farewell to Downton swap.  Details here.

Speaking of Downton, I'm off to meet Beth and have yet another Downton adventure! This one is with Deb Hodge, who I have always admired and wanted to meet. We are attending her retreat on Coronado Island.  But first, I'm spending some Cali time with Sugarwings and my handsome husband. Please do sign up for the swap, and I'll catch up with the lists and record keeping when I return.
