Roots and bliss 058

For the solstice, we drove to the Ozarks to go to the Roots and Bliss festival hosted at a campground on the river.

Roots and bliss 002

I'm not much of a camper, or a festival goer. But I knew that my littles would be there, and that their dad was a major contributor to the event, he'd been working on the venue for the whole previous year.

Roots and bliss 019

It was really quite nice to see him in action, and to see the respect and caring that he was shown by the attendees.

Roots and bliss 0223

I didn't attend any of the workshops, but I liked listening.  Roots and bliss 042

And of course, playing with the grand fairies.

Roots and bliss 004

And splashing around down in the river.

Roots and bliss 033

My only regret is that we didn't bring dogs with us.  We might have been the only people there without a pup.  Well, not quite, but there were lots of furry friends around.

Roots and bliss 025

Funny, many of the dogs had at least one blue eye.

Roots and bliss 075

In the last few years, I've started a habit of making fairies on beaches I visit.  At this beach, there wasn't much in the way of shells, so I didn't think about it, til I saw that mossy green, heart shaped rock and knew it had to be a bodice for a fairy dress.

Then, saw a skirt shaped rock to match.  The head was easy too, then I was stumped with no rock wings or appendages. (oh, maybe "stumped" was a rude way to put it)

Roots and bliss 071

So, I cheated, and tucked the beach stones into my pocket for later. When I got back up to the camp, I poked around and found some sticks, and dead leaves that worked out pretty good and I was able to finish my little sprite.

Roots and bliss 070

The weekend was visually quite lovely, pretty lights, a winding, candlelit pathway, happy faces every where. Yep, we were very proud of our boy for his part in it all.

Roots and bliss 0233

There was yoga, from the talented Miss Tree, who has travelled the world to become a master class teacher, and who thought up and started the whole Roots and Bliss idea.  I'm glad they were blessed with beautiful weather and a good crowd after all the hard work that they put into the planning.

Roots and bliss 065

Sugarwings' mom was a fire dancer, and I was so mesmerized, I didn't even think of taking a photo.  But here is the fam before the show started…

Roots and bliss 010

Did I mention that we were proud of our boy? And I'm a bit proud of myself for going. I had no intention of doing it. This sort of thing isn't my typical weekend, but sometimes you do need to get out of your regular routine and try something different, don't you?

I prefer books and TV or movies to live music, and get plenty of out door life in my own yard and have never felt the need to camp. So, the weekend was going to be a stretch for me.

Roots and bliss 021

At the last minute, I offered to join my husband (he wouldn't have missed it for anything, he'd been out of town and hadn't seen the girls all week. That man would have driven anywhere to see his grand daughters after a week without them).  So I gathered my courage and decided I'd sleep in a tent in the wilderness.

Luckily, we got there and found a very nice, air conditioned, cabin to rent for the night and I didn't even have to unroll a sleeping bag.

Roots and bliss 032

But I would have done it! I was willing to give it a try.

And trying something different is kind of nice. Especially, when you are surrounded by such nice people.

A fairy tea party for grandma

bird song art event, cottage, fairies, family, Food and Drink, We're having a party

Grandmajoantea 036

The day after Birdsong ended, my week was just gearing up!  We had family in town visiting, and a new kitten joined our family. His name is Terrance Snow Bell Song Bird Nathan.  (Terrance was in the Tinkerbell movie)

Grandmajoantea 002

The monsoons resumed, and the girls made use of the piles of umbrellas we'd had out on the porch earlier.

10411787_10201269702583302_2819553416533176806_n

Guncle Randy, Karen Hillman, and Crafting Queen Regina were in charge of dinner, while my husband grilled chicken.  He had rigged up multiple umbrellas and tarps to grill under, and didn't give up, no matter how soggy the day got.

Grandmajoantea 009

After a quiet-ish day of hanging in the studio and running people to the airport, we had a big family feast. And the next morning, the grand fairies threw a tea party for Great Grandma Joan who had come to visit them.

Grandmajoantea 020

They had been talking about her visit for months.  And had big plans for the tea party.  I'm so glad that I didn't listen to my tired body, and that I rallied for this. It meant a lot to the little ones and a person like Joan deserves being the guest of honor at a fairy feast.

She is a dear lady.

Grandmajoantea 011

Karen and Randy had whipped up a baked squash dish and a pan of roasted potatoes for our dinner the night before. I remade the leftovers into an egg casserole, made home made cinnamon rolls, asparagus wrapped in ham, and fruit salad (left overs too).  Just about everything was a reconfigured dish.

Grandmajoantea 008

The cinnamon rolls were even topped with extra raspberry icing I'd made for the cake I served for dessert on Sunday.

Grandmajoantea 010

Did I mention that I bought WAY too much food for Birdsong?  Luckily, I had a hoard of hungry nephews drop by to visit me on their way to a white water rafting trip. I filled their cooler with cookies and picnic food.

Grandmajoantea 012

The little girls set the table for me, tea parties are a great learning experience for tiny fairies.  Between their enthusiasm (and the smell of fresh baking bread) we had a table full of guests for our party. At first, it was just going to be a handful of us, no one else could make it.

Grandmajoantea 014

Festivity can be contaigious, and even my Handsome Husband got into the feel of the event. He went and put on a jacket and tie for the party.

With his cargo shorts.

Grandmajoantea 007

Regina, Guncle Randy, and Karen all delayed thier trip to Kansas City to stay and toast Great Grandma Joan with herbal tea.

Grandmajoantea 027

I think this photo is hilarious.  The breezeway was pretty much trashed, from Birdsong, a big dinner the night before, and the box of empties from the parties hadn't gone out yet.  But it just goes to show that you don't have to make everything perfect to have a good time.

If I'd had to completley clean up from the previous parties, I doubt if I'd been able to squeeze one more occasion out of my hospitality drained soul.  So, I just ignored the remnants of it all and partied-on.

From the look on this little fairy's face, a bit of mess wasn't even noticeable to her.

Grandmajoantea 035

Sugarwings took this photo of us saying goodbye.

Grandmajoantea 033

It was a fun way to see eveyone off and say thanks to the family and friends who had helped me so much all weekend.

Fairies under construction

bird song art event, fairies

Fairiepots 025

I've been working away on kits for my fairy project for Birdsong 4.  To get to the point to even start thinking about kits, I had to make plenty of little wool roving fairies to figure out the very best way to get them done and to explain to others how to make them.

Fairiepots 019

And of course, I made sooooo many, that I simply couldn't chose just one color for the kits.  I loved them all. And I really love variety.

Fairiepots 016

So, I made up packages with the different types of fairies that I had created.  There are neutral or green toned Woodland Fay, Pastel Pixies in softer colors, and Bright Sprites for the ladies who like things a little splashier.

Fairiepots 005

I also had to dye a lot of wool. And dye then sew crepe paper ruffles, by the hundreds of yards.  And sew ruffled tulle for the skirts too.

Fairiepots 007

I like it that I don't have two dolls that turned out the same and I can't wait to see dozens of fairy ladies in all the pretty colors  when my Birdsong friends make their kits.

Fairiepots 022

And of course, if you know anything about me, I'm sure you know that I like to give people choices. I even have a bunch of dog and cat faces that can be subbed for little girls faces on the fay dolls.

I'll also have bags of colored feathers, and a rainbow of wool roving out to play with, so that individuality can explode in a blast of colors that day. Fairiepots 006

We'll be making peat pot swings for the fairies to hang out in. I'd tried a ton of other ideas for swings and all were kind of interesting, but there is something extra cute about peat pots, at least to me.

Fairiepots 012

Gosh, I wish the photos of the fairies looked as good as they do in real life.  They just aren't something that photographs well.  Each has a lot of sweet details that make it special.

It was fun to plan the color schemes and fill the kit bags with tiny pretties, snips of lace, and itty bitty bouquets that when mixed with a dollop of creativity, will become a studio full of fairies when Birdsong comes around!

Fairiepots 024

By the way, I know that this craft isn't something I invented. I simply figured out the best way to make them for myself, but they have been around since Victorian times. Does anyone know the real name of these dolls? They were often made into Angels for Christmas trees.  I keep calling them wool roving fairies, but would love to know if there is something I should be calling them instead.

Valentine Fairies

antiques/junking, bird song art event, fairies, family

Shellis birthday trip 047

Our family day Valentine fairy workshop was very special to me. I simply do not get enough time with my sisters and their kids.  Not all of them could be there, a couple of nephews are far flung, like I am.  Because of they are not nearby, it was a good day to be together, we found out that my oldest nephew's son was going through a crisis and wasn't expected to live.  I was glad to be with family as the story unfolded, and even more glad to be there when we got the news that he was recovering and was going to be fine.

Shellis birthday trip 014

Bobbie's home is the best place to be for a Valentine party, the dining room's color scheme was ideal! And she had plenty of space for all of us to gather. We had kind of an open house seating, with nieces coming and going through out the day to make fairies with us.

Shellis birthday trip 059

I'd brought all the supplies and turned everyone loose with them to see what they'd come up with. The best part of a class is the variety of styles and creative ideas that show up in the end products.  Dang, I don't know how I missed getting a picture of Hannah's basketball fairy, it was a cutie!

Shellis birthday trip 066

Bobbie put her own face on her doll.  It's fitting, because her last name is Valentine!

Shellis birthday trip 045

Here is the three of us posing with our dolls.  The cheery, cherry wall was a good place to pose, and the rose painting was a good match for our Valentine theme too.

Shellis birthday trip 044

Doesn't it look like Sis is wearing a magnificent floral hat tho?  So, I had to put a hat on too. Sadly, all that was near me was a skein of yarn. Not a fancy as hers.

Shellis birthday trip 024

Sissy brought some curly wool roving in deep tones that made ideal hair.

Scrapbookhawawi 006

I'd dyed wool and crepe paper in pinks and reds to use.

Valentine fairy 023

Then decided that my wool was too pink and redyed some yellow over it to make it more fleshy. Great for the dolls, but in a pile, it looked like intestines or worms.

Shellis birthday trip 015

I sewed up some strips of sparkly tulle for dresses petticoats too.  You should see the drifts of glitter left behind in my sewing machine, when I opened the bobbin compartment.

I'm not sure that is good for it…

Valentine fairy 030

The more fairies I made, the more I got the hang of it and came up with tricks and short cuts.

Valentine fairy 008

Whenever I do a class or tutorial, I need to make a bazillion prototypes before I figure out the very best way to tackle the project.  My studio is going to be knee deep in fairies by the time I'm ready to host the class.

1011759_10152155926169477_483938970_n

For now, I've got the pretties hanging off my dining room chandelier for the holiday.

Valentine fairy 009

These will differ from what we are doing in Birdsong, since for one thing, they are all pink and red Valentines, but for another, I used some new flowers instead of all vintage millinery.

While experimenting with the new petals, I ran into a lot of trouble with my glue. I've always used the Ultimate, and love it.  But when it came to these brand new petals, it just wouldn't stick, they were slipping and sliding right off of the skirt.  I asked around and Fabric Tack was suggested. It did the trick, worked great on the new materials.  My fave, the Ultimate was used on the rest and also on the old flowers.

Valentine fairy 031

I've come up with lots of different shoe styles for the fairies, I always like to have a lot of options to show the class attendees.

Shellis birthday trip 025

I even have extra face options.  Dogs, cats, cherubs, ladies.  No dorkies, though, durn it.  I wish I could find some Victorian scrap Yorkshire Terriers!

Shellis birthday trip 048

After making a quite a few red and pink girls, I was ready to try some other colors. Shellis birthday trip 064

And I ended up with a few witches.

Shellis birthday trip 062

Bobbie's witch had a face from Oz.

Shellis birthday trip 042

Sissy moved onto using her wool for another purpose and felted a scarf.  And when my niece, Stacey, saw what we were using, she offered to gather some angora from her friend's goats. I can't wait to felt and dye that soft, fuzzy wool.  I'll show you the steps as I do it. Of course, it could be a "don't try it this way yourself" version of instructions, because I've never done it before.

Shellis birthday trip 016

One thing I tried didn't go so well.  I thought that maybe the sprites would look better with more rounded bodies.  So, we tried wrapping the wool over cotton balls, only to find that the dolls looked like cinched in pillows, not curvy fairies.  The one on the left is an example of how NOT to make one.

Shellis birthday trip 037

I'm excited to make more and get my kits made up in soft springtime colors for our Birdsong gathering.

Shellis birthday trip 022

And I'll enjoy memories of our family weekend filled with fairies while I am making kit after kit after kit.

While we were in Maui, we stayed at the Whaler on Kaanapuli Beach. From the canopied chairs by the pool, you can watch the ocean. And play Words with Friends.

Hawaiimaui 008

My husband and I are now hooked on that game, I don't know why it took us so long to try it. We both like Scrabble, crossword puzzles, and iPads.   Now, we have about 6 games going at once, so there is no wait while the other person plays. If there is any lag, we just start another game, so there are always words waiting to be made.

1520646_10152098719524477_1455459787_n

The pool was also a good place to do watercolor finger painting on my iPad.

1526793_10152087725024477_1050377965_n

I did a sketch for each day while there. One thing I didn't like about the ap was that I couldn't get good detail, or write very well.  This was the first and last one I tried to put words on, I decided it would be easier to print them and add writing. I'll be able to doctor this one up with inks and markers and fix the writing on it later when I make my journal.

Hawaiimaui 119

Besides the finger painting, I brought some other things to work on too.  I want to come up with nice little fairy dolls made of wool roving for one of my Birdsong classes.  Here are a few that I worked on with what I happened to have with me, but while I like quite a bit about them, there are a few things that I don't care for.  I'm a fan of "low color" but I need some tones more springtime-ish for these sprites.

I need to figure out the faces too. I'm considering just seed bead eyes and blushed cheeks.  But it is also possible to do a printed paper face glued on.

Downloadfff

Terry came to hang out with me while the guys played golf and we experimented with the dolls, to see how easy they are to show someone how to make. (those are my dried out leis hanging from the light fixture, when I turned on the lamp, they perfumed the air)

Downloadww

Terry and I decided we needed to make Hawaiian girls, not just fairies. One has embroidered eyes, the other is still blank faced.  The sarongs are made from a silk skirt I had with me. It had a bad spot on it, so I thought it would be better to cut up for supplies than to wear.

Won't it make beautiful silk ribbons when I slice it up?

I think the tiny doll will go into my travel journal.  Both girls are holding heart shaped coral fragments that I found on the beach.

Hawaiimaui 113

It's surprising just how many hearts there are waiting to be picked up on the beach. Some I left behind with this little shell and coral fairy in the sand.  Doesn't her broken coral dress look like polka dots and ruffles? I saw that laying on the beach and just knew it had to be a fairy gown.

So, as I strolled along the shore, I kept my eyes peeled for shapes to finish her.  I didn't expect to find so many hearts while on my Dr. Frankenstein quest.

What luck! There must be something about the way coral snaps off and gets buffed by the ocean that creates so many hearts.  Or I was just there at a particuarly loving time.

I hope that someone walked by my fairy when I left her and had their day brightened.

1528637_10152092838819477_168840958_n

Truly though, days don't need to be brightened on Maui.  The island has a good handle on keeping everyone peaceful and happy.

Hawaiimaui 032

It's hard to think about your problems in a place like this.

Theatre Lawrence, Shrek the Musical

Dew Drop, fairies, family, parties

Shrek (7)

Nope, that isn't a Christmas Elf, it's Princess Fiona.

Shrek (6)

We went to see Shrek the Musical at our community theater and of course, I thought it would be a good idea if we all got Shrekked up a bit.

Shrek (13)

My husband, surprisingly, already owned this bilious green shirt.  And Dewdrop only wants to wear her pink gown all the time, but did agree to have a green skirt over it.  I found a $3 top at Goodwill for myself, but went to 5 stores before I could find something just right for Sugarwings.

Shrek (36)

And I think that her leafy, green dress from Kohls is a perfect balance of princess and ogre, with the green leggings and shirt underneath to keep warm. It was only 6 degrees out that night, and I was glad that boots were suitable for the girls instead of princess shoes, or they'd have frozen their toesies.

  Shrek (31)

The theater itself was warm and cozy. It is a brand new building, and something our town should be very proud of.

Shrek (37)

The show was cute as can be, as entertaining for a 3 year old as it was for a 50 year old.  Well, 55, to be honest.

Shrek (56)

Afterwards, the cast came out to visit, and Sugarwings was thrilled to see Mama Bear and the Sugarplum fairy up close. Dewdrop was down for the count though. By the time the show had ended, she was snoring away in my lap with her own sugarplums dancing in her head.

B

For this little one, the highlight of the evening was getting to meet a real princess.

Shrek (43)

And dancing on the stage with the cast to the last song. Which I tried to stop her from doing, not realizing that all the kids were invited.  We have this tradition in the movie theater, that when the show ends and everyone else starts to file out the door,  we all go down to the very front of the room right by the screen, and dance to the credits.

Shrek (24)

While Sugarwings is always mesmerized by a movie, unspent energy builds up and accumulates in her tiny body while watching the show. So, we let her blow some of it off before loading her in the car.

Shrek (44)

And when I saw her take off for the stage at the end of Shrek, I didn't realize it was by invitation, I thought she was just doing what she does at the movies and figured she was going to add herself into the plot!

I'm glad they let the kiddos do this, what fun for them to be right in the middle of all the fairy tale characters. She had such a good time dancing with the Ugly Duckling, that all the photos were a blur, she was putting everything into the dance, with gusto.

Shrek (29)

My dear friend, Jen Unekis, was the featured artist, and her work was hanging in the lobby. There was an opening night reception for her, and it added to the festivities.

Here are some more photos of our visit with Shrek at the play.  I am thinking I should get season tickets, this was such a wonderful family night out!

We've been trying to plan a sister trip there to sprinkle our dad's ashes together, and the timing never works out.

We had the little fairy grandgirls with us for most of the day, and I of course had my camera pointed at them all the time, like I usually do.

Sister visit and magic books 114

But after my husband took a sleepy fairy home to nap and Sugarwings went off to explore with her mommy, I actually pointed my camera at some of the sights of the renfest.

One thing I love about the place is that it is a permanent location, and the grounds have some beautiful buildings.

My fave is the castle in progress. Not just because my son did some of the stone work, but because it is such an intriguing design.

Of course, he won't have to put a costume on to sell stuff online like he did at the festival.

Sister visit and magic books 139

There was more magic to be found too.  Sugarwings met Bitsy, a baby mermaid and made instant friends.  She was hanging out in the park taking a break and the two got to know each other and chatted a while.  Sugarwings gave her am organic sucker (we pack treats for the day), and told her it was called a Lollipop, adding, "We eat these on the land"

A royal visit to the Renfest

celebrations, Dew Drop, fairies, family, Sugarwings

Renfest 079
Last weekend, we made our annual trip to the Rennesaince Festival.  We always love going, and since Sugarwings was born, I rarely miss it.  Before that, it had probably been 7-8 years between visits.  But seeing it with my very own little fairy by my side, has made the experience very special.

Renfest 011

This year, I had both girls with me.  They decided they wanted to be princesses, not fairies, so I created some gowns for them.  We had some ivory satin dresses in the play cabinet, but they'd seen better days. Around here, dress up clothes get a heavy duty workout.

So, I stitched bundles of white tulle around the waists, and took the plastic innards out of silk roses, and sewed them on the bodices.  It's not a great sewing job, I just bunched up the tulle and pushed it through the machine. I was pretty pleased with myself for not sewing the back of the dress to its own front, with so many layers of bunched up fabric in those full skirts, I was impressed that I could do it.  And I ran the pedal right over the silk rose and leaves, no careful hand stitching here.

Dress

After that, we threw them both in the washer with a half bottle each of pale pink and fuchsia Rit dye (because that is what I had), along with a few stained tee shirts, hoping to salvage the shirts by hiding the stain under a coat of pink.  Anytime I dye stuff, I fill up the machine with as many things as I can find, kind of to see what can be repaired that is stained, but also just because it's fun to see a new color emerge.

Renfest 091

Dewdrop and I sat in front of the washer and watched the clothes spin as the color sunk in.  I'd say we watched it at least 10 minutes, until I started to wonder exactly what had become of my life, that sitting in front of a washing machine was now entertainment…

Renfest 009

We arrived at the festival just in time for the beginning of the Dance of the Fairies going on right inside the gate. It's always the highlight of our day there.  I was glad we started with that, I had my hands full with these guys, so it was nice that I didn't have to keep my eye on the clock to make it across the park to get to a showtime for the dance later in the day.

Renfest 063

Uncle Ryan came along to help me out, he hadn't been to the festival since he was in high school. Ry has some social phobias and doesn't enjoy crowded places. But his near death experience seems to be opening him up to new adventures.

And I needed the backup.  My husband was out of town, all the parents were working, it was just us.

Renfest 078

While these princesses are adorable, lovable, and the lights of my life, they are still not easy for me to handle alone with all the crowds and excitement.  Sugarwings especially thrives with one on one attention, and that isn't  possible, when there is a two year old who needs caring for.  Usually, my husband and I "divide and conquer" on outings.

T

Ryan was  handy to have, although, he has his own issues, and needs tending also.  He has to be cajoled and joked with, to keep his mood up and his mind calm.

I'm glad he came, we had some laughs, and even when one little girl would get distracted by something shiny and the other one would be angered by something not quite going her way, he managed to hold it together despite the crowds that bother him so much. I was proud of him and thankful to have his help.

I might have been even more impressed with his attitude than with my ability not to sew the bunches of skirts into a big wad.

Renfest 102

I recommend this event so highly.

Renfest 039

It is set in a lovely, wooded park and has permanent buildings that are as cute as can be. A pretty little fantasy to join in on.

Renfest 035

This wasn't my favorite visit there, but it wasn't the fault of the park, it was me trying to juggle too many special needs at once. I'd like to take each girl on her own, to really enjoy the days with them. Plus, going to that festival is always such a special time for me, that I feel like I missed out on some of the joy this year, our trip wasn't a typical one for us, it had it's stressed moments.

I want a do-over!!

Renfest 087

Isn't this entrance to the play area cute?  I wouldn't mind taking ONE girl at a time there, just to hang out at the play place for a couple hours. Their father is selling his jewelry and managing a booth there this season, so we have free passes for his kids to go.

He is also helping a friend build a castle there. The guy my son is working for, is a talented stone mason. This is an ongoing project, in it's third year, and still has a few years ahead of it till it is completed.

Renfest 071

Here he is, his name is Forrest.  I'm not sure you can see all the detail of his work from my photos, but it's quite intricate and arty.

Renfest 054

Cool, huh?  At this point, it is more like a courtyard than a castle, very open. I think it's magical as it is, but am looking forward to watching it grow.

Renfest 057

That column and window are fantastic.

I'll leave you with some more photos of our trip.

PS- Thank you for all of your enquiries about Ryan. He is doing well, is working at the new job while still going to cardiac rehab.  That job is kicking his butt, it is very hard work, but he is happy to be there.

How to make a 3-D collaged charm

fairies, how to's, how-to projects, jewelry, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, Tutorials, vintage paper/collage art

Traycharms 037
After Birdsong, I had a few of the pendant charms left and had a good time playing with them. So much so, that I bought a few more.

Charms 001

Quite a few more!  Actually, a couple hundred… I tend to over do when I get interested in something.  But, I figure that if I find it so much fun, then others might too. So, I get plenty to stock my Boutique with.

Yep, I did it! I added some stuff to my shop. Finally.  Did you even remember I had one? Except for my whining here and there about ignoring it, you probably forgot it even exists.

Charms 035

But now, it is filled up with plenty of primed and antiqued tray pendants in a couple sizes and in multiple colors.

Pink charms
Blue charms
White charms

I have a few more to put in there too.

Charms 029

While I was at it, I primed, painted and glazed some fairy charms too to put in the shop.

Traycharms 001

And added lengths of rhinestone chain in lots of colors.

Rhinestons 006

And lots of rhinestone clusters.

Traycharms 018

And in case you were wondering how to use all these components, I thought I'd do a little tutorial with some ideas.

I've used the Mod Podge glaze on all of mine, though in the past have liked the Paper Glaze too. It tends to dry slower and can be milky if you use it too thickly.  Mod Podge is shiny and clear, and dries fast.

Traycharms 012

To create a pattern to fit the interior oval of the pendants, I simply place a thin piece of paper over it, and trace with my fingernail.

Traycharms 010

For me, this is better than the charm coming with a pattern. Because you can create your own pattern for any size charm quickly and easily if you learn this trick.

Traycharms 014

I cut out the pattern and use it to trace onto my pretty paper, and then cut out that.  For mine, I prefer using a tan marker, because it makes the edges look aged.

Traycharms 016

Next, glue it into the pendant.

Traycharms 002

Over this, you can create your collage, anyway you'd like.  If you are going to add a 3D piece, use a drop of Ultimate Glue under it.

Traycharms 008

Rhinestones, charms, many things make a pretty addition over your paper collage.

Traycharms 019

To transform this teensy, weensy Charlotte doll into a fairy, I laid her onto sheet music, drew wings to cut out and color with markers.

Then, glued down the wings to the pretty paper in the pendant, and glued the doll onto them.

Traycharms 021

I found a word I liked, Joyful, and slipped it underneath.

Have you ever watched Martha Stewart ice cookies?  You do the glaze the same way she does her icing. You outline the area (make a "dam"), and "flood" the interior after. (The rim of the oval tray holds the flow of glaze in place.  The Mod Podge brand is pretty fluid and almost requires a contained area, but the Paper Glaze is thicker and can be used on a flat surface with no rim)

Traycharms 023

If you end up with bubbles, pop them with a pin.  If those bubbles roll away and won't pop, your pin isn't sharp enough. I like those tiny, thin, quilter's pins if I have trouble with a regular one. And wipe off the tip every single time. The glaze builds up on the end of the pin and it won't penetrate the bubble.

Traycharms 036

Then, set it aside to dry.  Between the glue under your chosen 3D element and the hardened glaze around it, the piece is secure.

Traycharms 034

I've worn many necklaces with rhinestones, charms, etc. added to a pendant this way and all have held up well.

Traycharms 035

These fairies come with a ring at the top to hang them, and look nice this way too. If you decide to use them in a pendant instead of hanging off of one, you should snip that ring off. I use the Tim Holtz red handled magic scissors that cut through anything, but you could also use wire cutters.

Traycharms 004

Of course, the pendants look cute with simple paper collages in them also. (oops, missed some bubbles under the word there)

Charms 016

And they don't have to be used as jewelry. I glued one into my journal too.  I'm picturing some Christmas tree ornies too.  Hung from ribbons?  Maybe with dangly crystals?

Traycharms 006

Please note that when adding metal pieces, like the rhinestones, a patina forms from the chemical reaction between the glaze and the metal. I like it it, myself.

ps- After looking at my photos and seeing how messy my nails look, I think my next project will probably involve this.

Rolling with it

Dew Drop, fairies, family, give away, Sugarwings

Boa
Thank you for all of your kind words about Ryan.  He is doing remarkably well and has no permanent damage.  But will be on meds all of his life so this doesn't happen again.

And thanks for your encouragement to me not to feel guilty. I think most of us understand Mom Guilt. It stays with you.

Girls

My husband said my last blog post sounded like I was giving myself a pity party.  He is probably right, I've turned into a mushy mess, now that the crisis is past.

It's been an odd year for me, with upheavals (good and bad), no real routine to settle into, and lots of trips.  Change doesn't always settle well with me, I'm a stick in the mud, homebody type.  I'm ready for some monotonous, day to day, regular boring days.  Ha!  Like that will happen….

Two

In the meantime, I guess I'll keep rolling with the waves.
