Setting up for Good Juju’s August Event

We had less than a week after July’s sale before we left to go on our North Carolina adventure.

I knew I would be fretting about the state of my space if I left it in its post sale shambles.

A0482D58-D402-4459-B063-7876C516ED5A

In my opinion, the spot needs a total flip-a-roo for a new look each new month. And that takes about two eight hour days for me plus touch ups.

A1100A15-D075-4B1C-AC43-0F4F52D528B1

I knew I needed to at least pack up stuff, bring in some new and rearrange the set up before I went out of town.  As well as having to demolish the auxiliary booth that I’d been using to sell vintage clothing.

56A3E1B2-AC54-4260-8F4E-98AD2748E430

All of that got done, plus more. I was pleased to get it to a spot that would be just about fine as is for sale day.

0BCDDBAF-6649-4672-AD63-2EAE5CACECDF

Except the jewelry cabinet.  Since there is silver on display, I need to keep it covered to prevent tarnish.  But that’s a quick turnaround, mostly just hanging a few necklaces.  Every other month, I take home the silver for a spiffing up to keep it shiny, too.

My nervous Nellie soul was pacified by getting so much done ahead of time.  With the travails of our trip, I was sure glad that I’d been prepared too.

Since I returned, I have spent my days and evenings car shopping and haven’t had much time to finish my Juju set up.

After about 8 dealership visits, 10 other dealership phone calls, and countless online searches, I finally found exactly what I needed to replace the car we gave to my son.  (If you think you’ll be needing a car in the next year, I suggest you start looking now! It’s nearly impossible to get a new one, and used cars cost just about as much as the new ones)

E798DF13-E6C4-4DEE-8AF6-A6EEFC525878
See how pretty the paint is when the sun hits it!?!  Now- to keep it that clean, so I can enjoy my sparkles……hmm.  Garage door openers are among the many things we had to store in NC since we were flying home, not driving a truck. Including a boxful of funky finds from antique stores across the country that I stopped at on the way there.

My quest to replace my 2017 RAV4 wasn’t supposed to be that imperative. But Rich’s truck got smooshed up on a curvy mountain road (he is fine).  We don’t have rental car coverage on our insurance policy, so after flying home and picking up a car at the airport, we are trying to keep that rental down to just one week.

We had also planned on pulling our son’s car home for some repairs for me to use it until I found a car in a couple months.  Without a truck, that wasn’t happening.

With that time frame changing from months to a few days, I was extra relieved that I wasn’t required to do a booth flip.

24210B7C-0313-42E3-A8D2-471F57FAAF48

Now that car shopping is settled, and we have looked around to get replacement ideas and possible budgets for a new truck (still waiting to hear if it is gone forever) I have had time to add to and tweak the booth, then get the silver  polished.

1A7C6837-9429-45E4-95E6-21129F751301

I even had time to make FALL banners, crowns, and a few more mushrooms.  These photos are from the first go-round and don’t show the additions.  It might not look like there is room, but I squeezed more in.  I might even make more little mushroom paintings, there are only a couple left.

It is nice to be back in Kansas, especially after an emotional rollercoaster of a trip.  I am not a fan of any rollercoaster.  At all.  The visit was a juxtaposition of pure bliss and worries.  Yep, good to be home!  As Dorothy likes to say, there is no place like it.

Feeling beachy

July at Juju is Beachy Keen on one of my walls.

9A1911FA-F360-41BF-800F-BFA0AFD26774

I have found some great, old pitchers and pottery with an ocean theme like this fish.

3B3A4D36-FC33-428D-81BB-94349F63B2E1

As well as these lobsters and mermaids.  Oh my- those mermaids!
C587B1AA-C413-485F-BB67-B8AB0204C99B
The coral vase isn’t old, but suits the theme well, right?   And there are lots of beachy blue necklaces and pearls spread out.

FAB7A1E1-1DAC-42BF-816B-D43951AEB7FB

Can’t you picture the blue comb in a mermaid’s hair?

6977D97D-D5E5-45F0-8B7A-C90B935480AF

Speaking of mermaids, here is a collage I’ve done.

3886EA0F-F133-417D-AC40-33769488AF1B

The blues are spread throughout, it’s a loose interpretation of beach style, but goes with it okay.

Above it, I’ve hung a wreath I made from seashells picked up at Marco Island, and hand dyed silk ribbon. There are also my flamingo friends that I showed in an earlier post.

My half booth is divided up into small areas with different goods.  I’m surprised at how much I squeeze in.

C7CFF0DA-D92E-42D5-95E9-461CFC46D947

Some things from the previous month, like this garden statue get shifted around.  I like to give the spot a whole new look as much as I can, without taking too much home after a sale.
2EC44777-FC94-4D24-9574-246FA7E309D6
Then there are things that did okay so I replenish the stock.  Like these crowns.

And my shroomies.

346F04C2-BC56-4259-B4FE-74ADC04FE42E

I made quite a few crowns.  The first time I brought some in, they lingered a bit.  So I took a hard look at them and decided they were too shiny.  I used some patina liquid on the metal and that turned the whole ambiance of them around.

Off to see the Wizard

Books, Good JuJu, Sugarwings

52FA30E1-61F4-4CA0-B703-47558266221C
When Sugarwings was just tiny, that kid was obsessed with the Land of Oz and all things Dorothy.  That theme lasted for many years, with a Dorothy costume in every size from baby to teen.  Ruby slippers were worn out and replaced over and over.  The beloved Dorothy doll was restitched and salvaged many times.  A yellowbrick road pathway was put into our flower bed.  Every Oz event, movie screening, or play that was available was attended and we wore our costumes each time.

I perfected my witch’s cackle and my husband learned all the words to the scarecrow’s song.  I also got really good at pretending to be a flying monkey and sweeping in to run off with Toto (our Yorkie, Twinkle.)

7A936523-BE16-48DA-8E46-98A4E2BE3FFD
That child’s love of the Wizard of Oz never waned.  So when I saw a collection of Oz books at an auction a decade ago, I snapped up the stack for Sugarwings to read someday.  But the Grandfairy ended up being an audio book fan instead, so I don’t have any sentimental reason to hold onto this collection of old books.

So now, they are going into the mall, along with some other Oz themed loot for the next First Friday weekend sale.

5DAFD97D-34F7-4C79-BA85-F17512120E7F

This special set deserved a display worthy of it, so I started with a vintage wallpaper rainbow backdrop and added some colorful items to amplify the rainbow effect.

EAE012B6-D405-49D6-97FB-117E7017E60E

Then I sorted my collection of books into colors to match the shelves and filled in with Totos, witches, lions, and more.

93DCDE1B-460D-41D9-91F0-9310C71B243C

There is a heart for the woodsman, a picnic basket on top of the cabinet, and an antique black satin dress made for a wicked witch hanging on the door.

2877F52B-0C55-47DB-B806-0B450248D223

I used copies of a portrait I’d done of Dorothy as tags.

Isn’t this chalk ware Lion great?

5D2DD3E5-A3B3-4586-982C-7954F5A5AFB6

After it was all set up, I liked the look so much, I almost packed it back up to take home and reset up in my studio.   Nope, time for these books to go to another Oz fan.

A flamingo of a different color

A box of flamingos was gifted to me through a friend who’d had them first given to her.  They seemed to be just what I needed for my summer display at Good Juju.

AC553693-5DCF-434E-A020-A27A94D5F7F5

But first, the flock needed a group makeover.  I sprayed them with a bonding primer, painted them with acrylic craft paints, then wired and glued flowers to their tummies.

Uhm, you might have noticed our grass.  Or lack of it, I should say.  My husband retired from working at the world’s largest country club company, so he knows grass and the principles of growing a perfectly groomed, lush expanse of it, but we just don’t care that much out here in the country.  If I could, I’d have all ground covers, dandelions, and clover without a single blade of grass.

Anyway, back to my feathered friends- ta dah!  Previously, I’d had some umbrellas with flowers in my booth, then used those for garden party decor.

After leaving them outside in a storm, they were done for.  And of course, I can’t waste anything, so I pulled the flowers off and reused them on these gals.

75D0F34E-4E6B-47A5-B123-5AC5C023E37A

I don’t know if anyone else notices the displays I create up high, but I sure get a lot of joy in making them.

June at Juju

When I found this landscape, I knew it had to go behind my mosaic cottages.  Even though the display was finished.  I took it apart and redid it all, not just this shelf, but the whole cabinet.  I had to distribute some of the things that had been on this shelf to the other levels so the painting wouldn’t be completely blocked.

24E9BED6-2D00-4044-A55D-5E281C23E296

Because I tend to layer so much that I block a lot.  Like the mirror on the wall in this photo.

What mirror?  Well the one I hung in December that no one has ever seen because it has had so much in front of it.

AC7C9EFB-3BF1-4608-92DD-21FAF365CE69

Since I am a stacker, piler, and layer-er, I am careful to have most price tags prominently displayed.  People don’t have to risk causing an avalanche to get something down if it isn’t a price point they appreciate.

C8B26E14-1657-4256-9DD9-01B7E0B067A5

If I can do it, the tags are easy to find, but not right in your face.

1E1B0284-F248-4055-BC42-F309E1994191

Other times they are directly on the face.  Ha, get it?

F99049C4-5452-4988-B182-B12B4D45C7D0

Seriously, I try not to overcrowd, but it ends up that way anyhow.

Ceiling to floor.

F56CF6B3-50A8-4B21-9B2D-5B94837FB8CB

Speaking of ceilings, for summer, I have added butterflies to the entrance.  They didn’t have quite enough umph, so I also hung frames around them.

B9717514-3FAC-4D69-A141-A9C542799B91

My jewelry area got a makeover too.

74AF2918-5F18-4DCD-BC33-AF983BCD5682

Did I mention that I like to layer things?  This is pretty full.

B00E0E75-5505-4576-A053-9F407B456BD0

By piling so much on the furniture, shoppers miss those pieces.  I’m trying to use larger tags on them to see if that helps.  I’ll have to make one for this cool chair.  I’ve had it in my breezeway for a year now, and really liked it, even though it doesn’t seem like my typical look, I thought it was cute there with a basket of rosemary on it.
B72B8875-E94C-4B90-8D60-AE7CA29D7923
Also not my style?  Red, white, and blue.

2F60F169-A43C-4E63-8B0E-A96829278905

Still, I found so many, many more things I really liked in those shades, that I once again, went overboard.

3224ED4B-FCB4-4E72-98BA-EBE987149B01

My plan was to do groupings in these tones and fill a small area.  Before I knew it, I had so many pretty  items that over filled a whole wall.
DE8439C1-069B-4419-A85A-285A6DD9E39E
Plus, I threw in bags of marbles and of buttons to coordinate and make more splashes of color.

43F59E91-DA30-4B06-9E7C-A1736887CEE7
To be honest?  I prefer neutrals with floral accents.  But- ya gotta know your crowd.  I think the shoppers there enjoy the mix.  And I really do have fun putting it all together, no matter what colors I use.

And I ended up loving the final look.  Maybe I am a red, white, and blue fan after all?

On my last post I was talking about trying get shoppers to notice that my furniture is also for sale at Good Juju.  But not this piece!

It was a gift from my neighbor, Lily, who makes the aromatic candles.  And it is ideal for my jewelry display!

BFBFD8C1-8A1E-4A85-BA41-AC2E83A9C53C

Or so I hope.  Last month I tried to market my sparklies from the new, smaller space and that TANKED.   I’m always up for a shuffle or a redo to make the most of my displays, but honestly, it’s just a guessing game for me.

I will let you know how it goes.

I keep trying stuff to see what works

This month I am trying something different in my Good Juju space.  See all of the blue tags?

A18B895A-B0E7-44BC-A1C0-8715F020E69D

They border on obnoxious, huh?  That is the point, I hope.

My booth is piled floor to ceiling with small things.  And they do pretty good most of the time, I think people enjoy the treasure hunt.  But I also think that they are so focused on the mountains of minis that they do not see the bigger picture.

That furniture underneath the massive stacks is for sale too!  And I am done with my umbrellas, am ready for a new entryway display, so they are also gaudily tagged.

6B81CC9B-3D20-4268-AE2D-D6CCA87D5F1D

Sadly, I rarely sell furniture.  Oh, a piece here and there, but usually small and extra inexpensive.  (Not that I have anything high dollar anyway)

8F438F33-290A-485C-85E9-9715D8CFD121

People probably don’t even notice the tables, shelves, and dressers.  So, I tried to tag them in a way that made it obvious.

76D450C8-EBFA-4A9D-A3E7-484D4EEF610C

It certainly is a scramble when someone does buy a table, since there is a possible avalanche of goods on top of it.  But,  I am always happy to unload and redo.  It’s like a timed design challenge, to reshuffle as fast as I can while shoppers are looking around.

I like my spot to have a different look each month, so I don’t want the same furniture there forever and I am constantly hauling things back and forth from home.  Which is inefficient.  I’d much rather sell some and find more pieces to fix up and redo.
401AA553-0470-444F-B60B-B966D5ECA4AA
Well, we will see, huh?  This month is my one year anniversary at the venue, I am still trying new things.   It’s also my birthday Friday while I’m there.  My second Good Juju birthday weekend with post concussion season.  (Not a tradition that I want to continue!)

I am pleased that my fairy dolls are still selling well at Good Juju. I really enjoy making them. I had a feeling it would only be a Christmas Angel type thing, but they have sold consistently each month. Not a lot at once, but 1-3 each time.  Which keeps me able to continue making them, which makes me happy.

69C8BEE4-B489-4457-BD19-18A000B21592

Friends have been giving me old dolls that need repair and I have been playing dolly doc with glue, lace, and goat hair.  Plus a few sparkly bits here and there.

843F1AEB-9DEC-4F47-9364-BDC02687D0BB

I also make the fairies by scratch with these vintage heads I found, plus a wire and wool roving body.

0421FDDF-A81F-4A85-8262-442B4EE1D60E
Or sometimes, I just cut off the hideous costumes they often come in, clean them up and display as is.

I have always been fond of dolls, and even as a kid, I liked to give them makeovers.  I consider myself very blessed to be able to play with dollies as an adult.

Because it sucks to just act like a grown up all the time.

Well, that wasn’t a good idea

At last month’s Good Juju sale, I tried a new out a new booth for my jewelry.

Well, that didn’t go so well.

I think the space was too tight and hard to shop in for so many pieces of jewelry.  That stuff needs to be spread out more.

I have already paid my rent for the 3’ x 3’ corner, so I decided to try something else for May’s shopping event.  I have a lot of vintage clothing, but could only bring a couple of pieces at a time into my man booth since a gown can take up so much space.

Rich helped me make over this jewelry spot into a clothes closet.  It feels more efficient this way, but what do I know?  I’m still figuring this whole thing out.

3DF2A84E-D0F4-4401-B1D0-5AB69D33F612

Since I am a big believer in using the WHOLE piece of real estate, I had Rich add some shelves for me.
He made the clothing rod out of one of his grapevine walking sticks and the rest of the installed bits and pieces are things we had in the garage.  So the changeover didn’t cost us anything.

It was sad to see him cut up one of his cool sticks, but he has a few and using it does class up the area.  I think I’ll ask him if I can have more of those, then I’ll fix them up and sell them.  I think there could be a market for his whittled grapevine walking sticks, I really like them.  I might add some leather and crystals to them.

Resting and relaxing with a little bit of weeping

Well the weekend is beginning and it is the first Friday of the month, usually one of my favorite dates.  But I’m still not quite myself after re-jiggling my brain by tripping. I’ve kept my days very low key and darkened since that happened, with a few mini excursions back into the world.  Usually a foray into real life is fine up to a certain point, then I am wiped out completely and unexpectedly and need a nap.

Writing my previous blog post required a three hour nap after.  I think it is the reading glasses that strain me.  I can check some messages, skim a little social media, and read small bits without that problem, but have done that reading without the glasses.

0CF55689-E047-4F1D-B9F0-1FC2B7B477D7

2022’s Annual Spring Concussion seemed much worse than 2023’s.  I am hoping that this one doesn’t take the months of recovery that last year’s needed.  I look back on most of last summer like I was peering through a tunnel.
This newest addition to my never ending concussion collection feels more like looking through a fish bowl.  I have a much wider field of vision.   Maybe because I took the doctor’s advice of resting and dark rooms seriously.  Plus, I already knew the PT to start after the full week of nothingness.

7695756E-7BF0-4BC7-A03E-52657A0B4917

Juju is Friday and Saturday from 9-6, and fingers crossed that I can hold it together that long without napping. I might take breaks in my car if needed.  I honestly think that I’ll be fine after ten days of serious rest, or I wouldn’t do it.

It will be good to be around people and smile again.  Concussions can also make you emotional, so I’ve had a couple of weepy days.  A day of smiles will be wonderful medicine.

22D8136B-A623-422C-B51E-4755047ECC12

And I might just give myself some aromatherapy tonight before I face the crowds tomorrow.  I’ve made some helpful scented scrubs.  I will recommend this one for tonight.

And after the sale is done?  Time to relax!

94CE2533-BF16-41A3-A2E3-CB8A4AFD70D5

The labels were made with an image from some ephemera a friend brought back from France that I edited together with a garland and blue birds from a Victorian postcard.  I wanted something completely original.  I just hope it isn’t too girly girly for Good Juju, many shoppers are there for the primitive stuff.  At least as far as furniture goes.

Please wish me luck with the weekend.   I really love being there and doing the sale, so I am hoping it’s a healing experience for me.  And I could use some luck with my new scrubs too.  Heck, while you are throwing around wishes and sprinkling luck everywhere, share a little with yourself and use it for having a blessed Easter weekend!
