Good JuJu

Turning an ugly duckling into an uglier toad

Good JuJu, Hand Painted Furniture, how to's

B2720316-19EF-47EB-B326-1FF5EE908482
This was previously an unattractive, not to my taste at all, chest of drawers.  I’d brought it into the Good Juju sale last month to sit it in the parking lot area to get rid of cheap.

Then the day turned drizzly.  I wondered if it would matter much if the ugly guy got wet, who cared?  It couldn’t get worse.

0D03774F-C0FD-4C9E-A08C-2E2D8F759B3D

But a nice dealer brought it inside for me. I quickly made space in my booth and then had to stare at it for the rest of the sale.  After a bit of looking, I got past the finish ( which was so bad, I thought it was veneer, but it’s not, this is real wood) and thought, hmm, those are nice lines.  And look at the pretty hardware.

836096C8-CFB7-4AE6-9EAC-AAD7F6D85C4E

So, while setting up for next month’s sale, I thought I’d leave the poor thing and maybe someone else would notice it’s possibilities too.

After arranging the furniture, I always take lots of photos to look at once I get home, to rethink areas and plan the smalls that I’ll be adding.  When looking at this picture, I decided that this center area just looked sad and blah.

67E1EFDA-D647-43CA-8834-7B49559A2624

Instead of fetching the brown, ugly duckling chest and bringing it back home to give it a glow up, I packed up my paints and thought I’d do a quick turn over there.

Things did not go as planned.  Maybe the warehouse was too cold?  The temperature only stays warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing between shows.  Maybe it was me trying to rush it? Maybe I didn’t bring enough color options or supplies with me to do what I wanted?

Whatever it was, I just kept getting murk.  The duckling was turning into a toad, not a swan and I was turning into an obsessed, and unhinged painter. Poor Beth was working next to me in her space and had to listen to the whole dilemma as I was verbally assaulting my design decisions.

Here is what I learned.  Well, I already knew it, but in this case, between the cold and rushing the situation the lesson on chalk paint was amplified.

Dried chalk paint will return to a liquid state if it gets wet, even more quickly if it is barely dry. Which is why most people use wax, not glaze over it.  I was trying to use an umber glaze over a buttery cream chalk  and what I was getting was a flesh toned blend of the two shades, not layers.

I tried many more layers and fixes, but the ugliness just became stronger.  A quick project turned into an all dang day disaster.

At the end, I worked it out, slowly but surely by purposely blending the umber, cream and some white, over and over and over, building up incrementally during breaks of working on the rest of my space. While telling myself I should just take it home and start over

9B906EAB-43BD-44D6-A8D0-C57AF444B389

My stubbornness prevailed and I stayed till I got it right, then clear coated the piece so the chalk would never murk up again.  Looking back, I realize that I could’ve used the water based clear coat over my cream color, then done the glaze over that, and clear coated again.

But that would’ve been too easy, and honestly, I didn’t think of it at the time because I kept trying just one more thing, then one more thing, on and on.

But now, I really like the lovely lines, hardware, and many, many blended coats of paint that nudged this ugly duckling into, well maybe not a swan, but at least an attractive duck.

Part Three of March’s Good Juju Set Up- the Easter Explosion

Decorating for holidays makes me so happy!

Because before decorating with the stuff, I have to make it all.

And I really, really love making holiday goodies.

The sale at Good Juju in the Old West Bottoms of KC is always the first Fri & Sat of each month.

E31BE496-C9B6-449C-B26A-3A12E037C36F

Two days every month that I look forward to so much.

At the last sale, I got to meet two friends from online. It’s good to put a name and face together in real life.

78A231CD-AF09-4FB2-B354-0C426A588ABA

Although it is embarrassing to admit this, but I am very bad with names.  So if we meet, please don’t be offended if I don’t remember your name, because it seems to be some sort of issue that I can’t quite get over.
3AA24112-CC59-44CB-9985-62AEE1D9372A

Sometimes I feel like Dory in Finding Nemo.  I’m lucky to remember anything, and not just because I hit my head on a regular basis.  Although that most likely can’t help.  I’ve always been this way.

It could be that my head is too full of pretty colors, possible projects, snippets of songs, scenes from shows, a few fairies flying around knocking into stuff, and random nonsense.

It probably looks a bit like this in there.

A loose interpretation and some Grace

In my previous post, I had mentioned that one section of my booth had a Yellowstone inspiration.

62C3B335-F19A-4E69-8F37-73C5C51CEFBB

That is a pretty loose reference.  I guess what I was going for was my typical, romantic neutrals with a dash of western rustic thrown in. (Really, just boots and Stetson hats, but hey, I can spin all sorts of tales in my head about the stories behind the look)

E98CCFDD-5592-4723-9AC3-513A1DFA4A4F

There is some of the more neutral Easter decor on that side too.

F54090EC-4409-40D0-9BC4-2C86965C19C2

And throughout the whole booth, I have scattered nests.

04BC10EB-181D-4BED-98F4-382D2BEDA7A8

I seriously love the look of an all neutral design, but I cannot pull it off for my whole booth.  Because I also adore cottage roses and pretty colors too.  So I try to designate sections for each theme or color.

5DB48FD4-E50D-4A00-B361-875A1F08A32D

Hmm, my whole Yellowstone theme might just be in my head, because if you watch the show, you see very little white.

As I said before, though- inspiration and copying are very different.  You want to keep that line separating the two.  I doubt if there is anything truly original left to do in this world, but the trick is to add as much of your own self to any idea as you can, right?

F6EDA892-FD12-4F44-9B6B-3D3EBBA9BCDC

As I usually do, I’ve managed to cram a lot into my small area.  And then mentally slap myself when I start to day dream about expanding into even more booth space… or getting another spot somewhere else….

If I was smart, I’d just try to beef up my online shop.  Honestly, editing photos and writing descriptions is not half as fun as arranging things in person or precariously trying to hang decor from the ceiling.

There is a pile of goods accumulating for my Boutique, though. And I love the nice people I meet online who shop there.  Wrapping up the packages to make them pretty is my favorite part of selling through the website, I should concentrate on letting that part be the carrot on the stick to motivate me to get more done.

BDB48359-E5DE-4514-9ED7-A3A157CD53E7
Then again, I am trying to give myself some grace and realize that I just can’t do it all.
We could all use some of that Grace in our lives, where we try to appreciate what we can do and not feel bad about being unable to do more.

Inspiration, ancestors, and leprechauns

Easter isn’t until April, but I have been spending a good chunk of February getting ready for bunny-ing up my booth for the next First Friday at Good Juju.
80299DA1-9074-4F92-922B-5F3703CC598A
And since we are also in the vicinity of St Paddy’s, I’ve added a section of green and good luck snuggled between the bunnies and eggs.

C6611194-ABBF-49D3-8316-906F7ACB08AB

This wall is covered in spring daisies on a soft green background.  It is vintage wall paper, and my plan is to change it up seasonally.  I’ll roll up the used piece from the previous month and have it for sell when I do the change over.

I offer packets of ironed, cut wallpaper for crafting in my online Boutique but I’ve never sold the stuff this way.  It will be good for bigger projects, and ends up being about 6-7’.

B3AECD68-02A7-42C4-86A3-A68C010377E7

Although, when I stapled this piece up, it was chosen for the pretty green tones, then it dawned on me that around here, daisies were more of a summer flower, not early spring.  Dur.
7E7880F6-7CBB-4750-91EA-DBF4FEBC5B95
I kinda doubt anyone else will think it through that far.  Ha, can you picture someone critiquing my use of Daisies in March?

“Why, I’ve never seen such a disrespectful display of unseasonal flowers in my life! No way am  I shopping in that uninformed booth!”

63D2E228-5CE8-441D-BDCA-BF67F84046D9

Another nitpick?  I’m not totally satisfied with the hairstyle on my shamrock doll.  She has a 1960’s Barbie bubble cut from the front. From behind, it’s a nice updo.  This girl should dump her hairdresser (me).  I might bring scissors and snip in some bangs before she meets our guests.

25534E4E-1B88-475A-97C4-97DBC4E4AA12

While one whole corner is set to celebrate the luck of the Irish on their special day, most of my decor consists of green stuff and green Easter eggs.  I have a couple vintage clover brooches, the doll, and two mushrooms made from the same tattered, old material as the doll dress.

This one has a tiny leprechaun grabbing some shade underneath.

AC2BE789-1554-4199-9DF1-C52EC51DA50B

There are also silver pendants with an Irish theme.  I have Celtic knots, green stones, moons, and dragons.  Kinda Irishy.  I not a beer drinker, so have never considered drinking green beer, and really am not at all into the typical St Patrick’s Day type of celebrating.  But I like to remember that I am part Irish and pretend it is my holiday too, like many of us do.

(Also part English and German according to 23 and Me DNA testing. Sounds like there could’ve been some disagreements and a bit of bombing between my ancestors, huh?)

053A2F0F-1E9A-40AA-B16E-4BF95B6341CB

There will be more Easter to show you from the other side.

And then the last wall is all neutrals, inspired by Yellowstone- which I think starts up again soon.  I do enjoy that show, but I seriously LOVE  the two prequels.  OMG, the romance!  The scenery!  How Gorgeous.  Well, I’ll show that wall later, I have a feeling no one will interpret as Yellowstone, but hey, inspiration isn’t exact because then it’s called copying, right?

A learning curve or a squiggle?

antiques/junking, Good JuJu

D1EBB480-0164-4081-A572-6AD05445913D
For a place that is only open two days a month, I sure spend a lot of time working on Good Juju stuff.  It is all things I like to do, make pretties, buy junk, fix up old things, repurpose, and then decorate with it all.
But- I really, really, really put too much time into it.

Like setting up this display at home as a practice look before even getting the crap to the venue.

187D501A-7DF8-423E-90B6-DD4E9A1C6A18

Some of the problem is that I’ve not even been doing this a year yet and my booth space changed four times during those few months.  I don’t exactly have a firm feel of what I need to fill up my spaces.  Every time I take a load in, I think I’m done, then I realize I could fit another carload into the area, so I bring in more.

7F61B62C-1363-4C10-8698-BFF713642C3A

When I began, I had zero inventory.  It was right as we were emerging from Covid seclusions, and I, like many other people, did major closet clearing during lock down.  I gave truckloads of things from my storage areas, garages, cabinets and just things I was tired of looking at, all to Goodwill.

And I had a pretty serious concussion that affected me more than I realized at the time.  Looking back, those couple of months after my dog’s head slammed into my head, are all fuzzy and seem like I was peering through a dark tunnel.

B52F08AF-1810-4700-A2BE-15FEA4DF8614

Also, I am still trying to figure out what will sell.  When I craft, I usually go all out and make a ton of that item in many variations.  And sometimes, I’ll only sell a couple.  Or I will sell most of them, make more for the next sale, and everyone who wanted one already got it earlier.  Or I’ll sell out of something online by showing photos ahead of time, and not have any for my booth.

I guess my issue is that I love everything about the creative side, but struggle with the marketing end of it all.  It’s a learning curve and I might think in a squiggles shape with curves all over the place instead of a gentle arc.

0413F88C-DB7B-45B3-8D51-62BB294D1C6C

Then there are the things that I make or display that are just because I want to, not because people will be buying them  After hanging big snowflakes from the rafters above the entry to our booth for winter, I decided I want to do a different theme each season.

This month, it is birdcages.  But once I got these minis up there, I didn’t think they make enough of a statement.  I had plans to hang big cages and white frames too, but needing to use a ladder the size of a skyscraper (that weighs as much as a building too) had me adjusting my plans.

9E8926D3-593F-4B35-A8BC-9A383EA149E8

Still, I do enjoy my obsessions, I mean themes.  Like all of the handmade nests I spent an entire day on.

And as far as marketing goes, I might never figure out what is the best way to go. I am hoping that as I build inventory up, and get used to just how much I can squeeze into my booth, I can become more efficient in my set ups.

8E9D3616-31B3-45F1-851F-101BC7B06D64
And I’ll keeping on completely immersing myself into my projects, because it’s just my nature.  Sure, I could get nests wholesale and pop eggs from the hobby store into them.  But I loved spending a day making a few dozen hand crafted nests and repainting those purchased eggs just the right color of blue, so they’d all look pretty together.

Mountains of Valentines!

My favorite days of the month are just about here!

D2A03A0E-EFF6-4053-934D-3C7640CB7EA2

First Fridays sales at Good Juju are always such fun.

C0E80850-25F6-4068-B9C9-7562AAF90550

Laughing with friends, exploring the goodies the other dealers bring in, watching happy shoppers find just the right treasure.

B9C14F67-2453-4E3C-B00E-60752F1DDF11

And trying to prevent an avalanche when guests come into my space.  I might go a bit over board on my layers of goods…

26E2A944-F2A8-4B4C-9098-C59F0CD1E60C

When someone asked me recently what I call my style, instead of replying “Romantic Cottage” as  I usually do, I said “Frilly Avalanche”.

C3E474ED-9DE7-471E-A342-2E12CE7C111F

There is a lot going on.  (The back is Beth’s and she was still in progress with her area.  She tends to fit just as much in her space, but in a much tidier way, no danger of being buried alive in hers.)

0FC64967-D654-4E61-B1DC-DFF7813D96B5

I’m always surprised at how much I squeeze in.  Maybe it’s because I’m still sorta new at this, I am not good at knowing how much to bring in.

89928383-41FB-415A-8225-7B1BA518089F

Each month, I rearrange it all, taking home items from the last sale that no longer fit, changing up the furniture layout.  I don’t sell much furniture at all, because you can barely see it under the piles of inventory.

9371717D-DD10-4BB2-9A0C-B1EC0C22965E

Which is funny because in my previous incarnation as an antique dealer, I specialized in hand painted furniture.   Now, I try to concentrate more on mountains of small and hand made pieces.

AF8C4155-D9E6-4120-9303-1C197899FD43

I still paint most of the tables and cabinets, but also go with natural tones of wood too.

A132FCEB-6769-4E29-A92A-5E89D13F2F53

I have discovered that what works best for me is to have a couple of larger tables, and a ton of smaller ones balanced on top, stacked underneath, and lined up.  More than I should, because they look more like wall units of shelving than individual pieces for sale.

0B522515-7665-4383-A5E6-F18542FBBAF8

Every once in a while one sells and

oh

my

gosh!

You should see me scramble to unload it, and find somewhere else to stack my crap!  It’s crazy.

F1040613-FA6C-44FF-807F-BAA0E7E0358A

Part of my problem is that I looooooove to make things.

DEF523BD-4302-4528-B365-39928ED7C903

And I am prolific about it.  If I create one doll, I’ll just go ahead and make ten.

EFFF5B05-B5A1-4022-9DA4-3424AD647DA3
One little gnome might be lonely, so of course, I need a dozen.

054C433D-2EFD-463E-B995-A3ED52B93367

And I probably shouldn’t even talk about my mushroom addiction.  I’ve probably whipped up a couple hundred by now.

I feel very blessed to have such a lively, fun environment to market my excesses in!

1CB74797-D58C-4964-96F9-81923B7F81C0
Lately, I have been leaving jewelry making supplies out on one studio table.  That way, when I feel the whim, I can quickly make a piece without dragging out boxes.  The room is a wreck anyway from using a chunk of it as storage, so I have kind of given up on keeping my poor studio tidy.
7ACDC095-0DBD-4F07-9AFE-D1D88BCA7C79
My most recent creations have been Valentine themed.  Either with hearts, or just an air of dress up and romance.
69F9CFC0-4194-4087-9DDC-E9E7AE947A83
The last few months at Good Juju have been absolutely delightful for me.  I simply adore decorating for Christmas, Valentine’s, and Halloween. I tend to be into flowery and over the top, romantic, even gaudy stuff that isn’t exactly what the crowd there loves on a regular basis. The venue leans toward rustic or primitive and my corner screams “fussy” to a lot of the shoppers.
A2085CF0-4C01-4FA2-B32B-A9DD53F79056
I do throw in lots of neutrals and even natural woods and browns, but they end up buried under my foofiness.  And holidays were a good reason to have the exception.
A5EAE861-B724-460F-82EA-941F47A1B5EA

I guess I still have Easter to look forward to…. But after that, it will be a long stretch til fall when I have an excuse to make things my way.  Till then, I’ll try to reign myself in a little and focus more on neutrals.

Paper bag snowflakes

Good JuJu

1EFA7608-0E57-4B83-99CF-E496D38B2409
For a cheap winter display at my booth, I made some snowflakes.  I seriously had doubts that it would look cheesy, or like a kindergarten class project.
45C28211-6F3A-4084-BF45-1AD55B65D626

But I liked the effect even though I could not quite do what I wanted unless I moved things already set up, and since the building has very little heat turned on between sales, I wasn’t going to linger any longer than I had to.

I’d like them on both sides of the stained glass window, but just could not reach.  While I had the heavy duty, sky high ladder out, I hung fishing line in as many spots as I could stretch out to reach.  Now, I can reuse those dangling lines to hang other seasonal decorations throughout the year.

1D7AA4D8-1BDF-4473-BA7A-A80795D6DF29

The snowflakes are made from two colors and three sizes of paper bags.  I’d give you steps, but there are so many out there already that are easy to follow, it would just be redundant.

509BED36-3D43-4F51-8739-F2764573E329

Another thing I wish I’d done differently is to make all of the cut outs heart shaped.  I thought of that part way through, and really like it.  Plus, I saved the cut out hearts, glued them together on more fishing line and made streamers to hang with the snowflakes.

Hearts

IMG_6506

I'll be having lots of hearts and wings in my booth at Good JuJu.  This canvas has plaster texture in a heart shape with the roses painted inside. I have a few more, not sure if I got pictures. All are unique.

IMG_6495

And remember the jewelry trees I did for Xmas?

IMG_6496

I loved doing that so much, I could not stop!

IMG_6498

So, I turned my shape from a tree to a heart.

IMG_6502

This one is a combo of the textured canvas with a button collage.  And in front you can see some of my wings.  They are made from a 1800s ledger and I swear, that book was one of my best ever purchases. I have sold rolled up pages from it, used it to line shelves, decopauged it onto table tops, backed collages with it, and now have made wings and hearts.

And there is still some left!

I almost didn't buy it because it was not cheap. But man, that handwriting! Wow, so pretty. I am glad I went against my cheapskate instincts and bought it anyway.

F4C4A576-BC79-4B88-BC58-52A4C1E925AF
I also beat out my cheap side and decided to keep these wings that my son helped form instead of selling them.

1395677C-69D2-4C91-91A5-C65DBEAE12C8
Since my booth is chocked full of wings and hearts I doubt if one set will be missed.  Heck, I’d be thrilled to have even half of the ones there sell out.

4ED1C853-DD14-46A2-BB75-12F8FA03DFC2

And I sure do love making them.
