Custom Downton Abbey Journal for Guncle Randy

guncles

Sissbook 016

The Farewell to Downton Art Journals were very feminine, so I wanted to do a special one for Guncle Randy.   I went with dark olive velvet and vintage gold trim. The tie is brown velvet ribbon, and the book still feels lux without being girly.

Sissbook 001

Here is one of the layouts I made for him. The flowers are cut out of a painting I did of Highcleire Castle.  I had already cut it up and thought it would be a good idea to save the scraps for book pages. I framed it out in black velvet ribbon.

The two old photos on the other side are made into a pocket.

Sissbook 002

In the pocket, I put some more old pictures, like this great one of two guys and their dog.

Sissbook 013

This is a folded, old letter, with the stationery rimmed in black on the back. I added a medallion with an R for Randy and glued one side down.  It ties shut.

Sissbook 014

When it opens up, there is another vintage photo.  The paper is old and fragile, so I reinforced the fold with washi tape.

Sissbook 004

This whole swap was a fun theme for me, I certainly enjoyed the show for the seasons it was on, and it will linger in my mind for a long time.

Magic- under the sea with the guncles, a trip to Jacksonville

guncles

Disney terry holly 019

There were sooooo many highlights of my trip, but one of the most lovely was the special treatment that the guncles always offer to their guests. When you visit them, you feel treasured.

Disney terry holly 027

Randy set up his garden tent with an Under the Sea theme for a delicious crab leg dinner that was as beautiful as it was tasty.  (I picked the fresh lemon from the tree growing near the tent in the garden-feeling very Floridian as I did it)

Disney terry holly 013

The tablescape featured oversized clam shells and a giant coral, sprinkled liberally with glitter and smaller shells, strings of pearls, and lots of candles.

Disney terry holly 025

But the best part?  Well, dur-

those hosts!

Oh, and- that moss and "bubble" filled chandy, of course.

Disney terry holly 007

Terry, who I was  meeting up with in Orlando, is in the process of moving and is making some major changes in her studio.  She has been busy doing some destashing, and had sent a couple of boxes of delight my way earlier.

When I got to Randy's there was a pile of large, flat rate boxes there, and he saved them for us to go through together.

Geez, Louise, those were some fun boxes to delve into!  I'd already had the squealing, oohing and ahhing good time of opening the ones at my house, and now I got a double treat by helping him open his.

Disney terry holly 035

On craft day, I made a thank you card for Terry, done only with things that she had sent.

Disney terry holly 034

We also played with metal sheets, dyes, spritzes, and embossing plates that she'd packed up for him.

Disney terry holly 037

Here is a card that Randy made.

I spent some time on a drawing, here it is in an early stage.  It is for a coloring page, to go in a book I'm making.  Anyone up for a "Farewell to Downton" book swap? Details to come. I need to design the cover and get the rules together. I'll have a blog post up about it before too long, but feel free to contact me at:

karlanathan@sbcglobal.net

to get on a list for me to contact you when I have the info together, so you don't miss it.

Or leave a comment and I'll get back to you when it is ready.

Disney terry holly 045

We had a good day in the studio, and had plenty of company while working there. Our friend, Regina, came by and we had a constant parade of pups under our legs and in our laps.

Disney terry holly 003

The food and company are always wonderful, (I loved the fresh shrimp whipped up in a New Orleans style sauce), lots of wine, laughs, and snuggle pups.

Even better, their eclectic home filled with antiques was still decked out for the holidays, yay! Kevin is a master of junking and is one the best hunters around. His vintage Christmas finds and bargains are the BEST.  Whole villages of putzes. Silver trees with over 500 shiny brites. Comfort and Joy in every corner, on every table top, every where you look.

Disney terry holly 038

Ahhh, that fireplace…..

Disney terry holly 039

And that cabinet, full of collections….

Disney terry holly 006

All done with an eye to hospitality.

And love.

Happy Anniversary Guncles!

Haunted 032

A year ago, I was attending a very special event, the wedding of two of my favorite people. I wanted to send them a special card to mark their occasion, but it might not make it in the mail in time (due to my own carelessness, sorry guys!!) , so I'm posting it today to say,

"HAPPY ANNIVERSARY RANDY AND KEVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is the front of the card.

Haunted 035

And the inside says this.

(in my not so good writing)

Haunted 034

I found this old photo card with these two gentlemen on it, and cut out the heart shape, then colored the guys in the same tones Randy and Kevin wore for the ceremony.

FlNH 265

Kevin and Randy are much more handsome than the guys in the picture, aren't they?

I will be away from home for a bit, having a sister getaway in Florida.  I'll be answering emails from my iPad, but if you order from the Boutique, I'll mail packages on Tuesday the 27th.  Same with Etsy, unless you are buying a coloring page, those are a digital download that you will receive right away.  I'll have fresh blog stories pre-posted while I'm away, so please still come by to visit!

Birdsong FIVE- My Peeps

bird song art event, family, guncles, studio tour, We're having a party, Workshops

Birdsong5weekend 025

Do you know what I love best about Birdsong? My peeps, of course!

Birdsong5weekend 130

It's a special time with old friends and new, plus a few family members who come along to be a part of it, and to help out.

Birdsong5weekend 143

Gail, Nora, Beth, and Tami have been to every Birdsong (plus many of the smaller workshops we have throughout the year- and by the way, I've got a Halloween idea in the works…)

To commemorate their 5th year, I made up special ribbons for them to wear, and added little birdie pins to their name tags.

Birdsong5weekend 006

Most of us gathered for dinner the night before our party began.

Birdsong5weekend 010

I'm so glad it worked out to meet for a Pre-Birdsong dinner, because by that time, I'm very impatient to get the party started.

Birdsong5weekend 091

And you know what else is special about Birdsong to me?  Family members who want to be a part of the gathering.  While this is my busiest time of the entire year, and I don't always have much extra time, I'm happy to have them nearby and share the experience with me.

Birdsong5weekend 057

There is a lot of fluttering and flitting from one thing to another, but we manage to squeeze in a few good conversations here and there. Especially while prepping in the kitchen.  But it does go by fast, and then all of a sudden, everyone is leaving and I'm wondering how days slipped by without getting around to topics I wanted to talk about.  When Terry and her husband pulled out of the driveway to head back to Utah, I found myself teary eyed to see them go, thinking that we barely scratched the surface of all we wanted to talk about, and knowing it would be months before I saw her again.

Birdsong5weekend 138

That is how I feel about all of my Peeps, when the weekend starts, it seems like there is so much time to talk, play, and create, then all of a sudden, it is over.  And I miss them all.

Birdsong5weekend 072

This year, Sissy brought her daughter, Shelli.  It was a first time for her, and I hope she comes back for another one.

Birdsong5weekend 013

Especially when she looks so cute in her outfit that matches my fly strip…. Ha!! (I did take the strip down before guests arrived, even though it was a very stylish pattern)

Birdsong5weekend 059

This year, there were a lot of weddings, graduations, and family events that prevented some of our regulars from attending, so we got to add some new Peeps to the group.  (sign ups are offered first to previous attendees or sponsors)

Birdsong5weekend 065

Along with some favorite friends who come back every time.

Birdsong5weekend 073

Terry once again offered neck massages for hard working crafters.   I think some of my friends attend just for her magic touch!

Birdsong5weekend 058

And my baby bro, Guncle Randy, is our official parking guide. (Or as he calls himself, the "Parking B*#ch")

It is surprising how many cars we can fit into our driveway, when properly coordinated, and he has the pattern down pat after years of guiding the way.

Birdsong5weekend 129

Birdsong is a highlight of my year, and it means a lot to me that so many people join in and make it special for us all.

Birdsong5weekend 118

It's a lovely group, and I'm happy to call them friends.

If you are interested, Birdsong kits are available here.

Whitworth Ranch Retreat

celebrations, Food and Drink, guncles, Travel

Whitworthranch 187

What can I say about my visit to the Whitworth Ranch Retreat??? Oh my, where to start? What a pretty place.  Comfy, great food, hospitable, and fun.  Stacy Seely is owner and chef of the retreat on an acreage in Scurry, Texas and she threw a party for my FABULOUS buddy, Karen Hillman.   Whitworthranch 165

But this wasn't just a party. It was an extended weekend BASH.  With a bevy of beauties all dressed up like  visitors to Downton Abby.

Whitworthranch 115

Stacy not only decorated to the hilt to make photo ops for us, she hosted one little party after another.  Each elaborate, gourmet meal had its own decor  and all featured British foods to keep with the Downton gowns we wore.

Whitworthranch 111

Her food was as delicious as it was pretty, and I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of the fancy meals against the backdrop of the Texas landscape.

Whitworthranch 157

We were surrounded by a few hundred acres that were home to herds of cattle.

Whitworthranch 004

The interior is nicely shabby chic-ed.  This was our attic room, with four little Snow White and the 7 Dwarves' beds.

Whitworthranch 021

Sissy called them Goldilocks beds.

Whitworthranch 026

I think there were 4 or 5 rooms of 4 sets of beds, each with a different cottage style. And spacious bathrooms, with big, fluffy towels. I liked our attic room best because it was pinkalicious.

Whitworthranch 044

And because I got to share it with these guys! Regina, Sissy, and Guncle Randy.  I brought them each a set of fake teeth to go along with my gappy smile.  And we put them in our mouths, composed ourselves, and calmly called a person upstairs, telling them we wanted to show them something.  When our guest got up to the top of the stairs, we gave them each a wide grin, then rolled on the floor laughing. We pulled this prank over and over, til we had a room full of people rolling around with us.

Whitworthranch 028

Some meals were served in the main house, while some were poolside.  Continental breakfasts were available in either building, and were self serve, with plenty of fresh fruit and home made pastries.

Whitworthranch 017

The main house was the original, Whitworth family home.

Whitworthranch 074

This addition is fairly new, and is where I stayed.

Whitworthranch 012

It holds the craft room, as well as two guest rooms, a large sitting area, a kitchen and two baths.   We wanted to be here, so we could craft till all hours of the night, and we sure made use of it.  I was up till after 1 each night, cutting and gluing. And maybe sipping a tiny bit of wine and snacking on some of the best cookies I've ever had in my life.

Whitworthranch 034

I'm not the only one who thought so, although I did my share of emptying out the cookie jar!

Whitworthranch 121

And see what I mean about the beauty of the decor?

Whitworthranch 101

Stacy went all out.

Whitworthranch 113

No detail was left untouched. For High Tea, we were served these specialty teas from Highclere Manor.

Whitworthranch 112

With tea sandwiches, fresh baked scones, and clotted cream. I'm very surprised I was able to control myself around that clotted cream.  It took all of my will power to not lick the jar clean and risk getting the container stuck on my nose while trying to get to the bottom.

There is nothing as good as one of Stacy's home made scones topped with clotted cream.

Whitworthranch 188

Unless maybe it is her chocolate pudding made from a recipe handed down through 7 generations…

Whitworthranch 189

Or the champagne jello…

Whitworthranch 062Whitworthranch 063
Or the fish and chips with Mushy Peas…

I'd never heard of mushy peas, and now they are my favorite food.

Whitworthranch 068

I'll leave you with some pictures of the prettiness. And soon, I'll post about about the crafts.   With a craft room like that, I couldn't get in enough arty time. I was enticed to go in there and work whenever I got a free moment.

Whitworthranch 010

I really hope to go back. Preferably around Canton time or McKinney flea market days..  Stacy asked me if I want to teach sometime, I wonder if anyone would like to join me?

She only charges $230 per person to stay there (classes, if offered, are not included in that fee), and that is from Thursday at 10am til Sunday at 3pm, with continental breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners included.  (Plus whatever classes are being offered at the time, or else you can just treat it as a B&B and rent it for a vacation, not come during classes)

The cost kinda blew me away. I kept asking her again, in case I got it wrong, and then finally wrote it down just to be sure. Really?? Only $230 a person for the whole time, not for each day? And those meals are included?  The food has to be much more simple than what we had, right??? NOPE. Elaborate, home cooked, gourmet meals done fresh, with any theme you'd like. Stacy has a culinary degree and knows her way around a kitchen. She says she can cook any style food that is requested.  Italian, TX BBQ, or pure British bliss like we had.

A Cleaning Tip from Guncle Kevin

guncles, housework

Ftlauderdale 081

When I was in Florida last month, Guncle Kevin had a trick to show me. He uses "Peek Polish Paste"  to eliminate scratches from china and pottery. In this photo, the left side has been Peeked, and the right has not.

Ftlauderdale 083

He quickly, very quickly, showed me how to use it. Rub it on. Rub it off, do a little scrubble and the lines disappear.

Ftlauderdale 082

Again, left side polished, right side all scratched up. Nice, huh?

  FlNH 254

This guy is not just handsome, he is pretty handy too!

All guncle-ed up

flowers, guncles, Travel

Ftlauderdale 053

My trip to see Randy and  Kevin was just delightful.  Kevin promised they would "guncle me up."  And they sure did. I was spoiled all day.

Ftlauderdale 091

Randy and I had a whole day of hanging in the craft room.

Ftlauderdale 069

Between eating piles of seafood, that is.

And after I slept in to an unbelievable hour. Due to a late start, and pure stupidity in taking a drastic wrong turn, I got in after 1am the night before, not dinner time like I had planned.

At home that is no big deal, I'm a night owl. But I guess the stress of the drive and being lost, exhausted me. I slept till, well, LATE. I never do that. Not in years.  I hated to waste a vacation day snoozing till, well, way, way LATE.  But it did feel really good. Although it was embarrassing too.

Ftlauderdale 076

Back in the craft room, we watched their wedding video while we created. And Randy had a bunch of surprises for me, that Kevin had found while out junking the week before. We pretended that there were prize drawings like we have at Birdsong, but the name that was called over and over was mine.

There was a lot of squealing every time I won a prize. And I got lots of prizes, old lace, die cuts, Victorian scrap books, and more.

Ftlauderdale 031

We took a break to go outside and pick some fruit. Even though it was cold out, they hadn't had a freeze yet this year and the sight of all that lushness was eye candy to me!

Ftlauderdale 030

Randy thought his yard looked too messy for photos, but I loved every inch of it.  Fresh fruit? Tall bushes of rosemary? FLOWERS??? Oh my.

Ftlauderdale 039

Blooms in January left me feeling a bit giddy. There were dozens of angel trumpet vine blossoms hanging over head. They were so large and fragrant, I couldn't resist them.  I was thrilled to bundle up in a borrowed sweatshirt and coat to check out the gardens.  At home, January is grey.

Just grey.

As far as the eye can see.

Especially this year, no pretty snow to liven it up.

Just grey.

Ftlauderdale 043

But things are lively in the Guncles' garden!  This is a double camellia.

Ftlauderdale 057

The angel trumpet doesn't make a good cut flower to put in a vase, it soon wilted.

But it sure smells sweet and is worth picking to wear on your head like a fairy's hat.

Ftlauderdale 085

A while back, I painted the floor of the craft room. These mermen were at my feet all day while I worked back there.

Ftlauderdale 087

Randy and I had done the walls together over the last 18 years or so. I'd visit and we'd add a few more sprites with every trip I made to Florida.

Ftlauderdale 063

The company is pretty good there too.  Doggies every where under foot or on laps.

Ftlauderdale 059

This little guy, especially is full of sweetness.  That could actually be a halo above his tiny head.

Ftlauderdale 058

No, must not be. From this angle, it is over Randy's head.

And he ain't no angel.

Ftlauderdale 065

Although it was pretty sweet of him to redo his dining room so I'd get the full Christmas decor effect. Much of it was still up, but some of it had been taken down and he actually re-decked it out for me and set this table back up like he'd had it for Christmas.

Ftlauderdale 023

Including this cake stand filled with a winter wonderland.  Martha Stewart had a similar idea on her magazine cover, but Randy had beat her to it, he arranged his before he saw hers.

Ftlauderdale 016

It was pretty festive there.

Ftlauderdale 025

And I was happy to see that the wedding centerpieces we'd made were part of the holiday scheme.  They say they will use them year round.

For now, the top box is filled with a winter arrangement of branches.

Ftlauderdale 072

And the little fairy I made is holding court in the greenhouse box. Or whatever you call that thing. It's from Pottery Barn and I want one. But I'm cheap…

Ftlauderdale 046

I'll leave you with some pictures around the house. And I wanted to let you know that Birdsong is now open for registration. Please contact me at:

A quick trip to Ft Lauderdale

Food and Drink, guncles, Travel

Ftlauderdale 115

My poor husband flies a lot for business but lucky for me, he flies so much, that he earned a companion pass for me to go anywhere he goes for free.  When I heard he was flying into Ft. Lauderdale to play golf in Palm Beach, I decided to tag along and snag some Florida sunshine.

Well, I don't know if you can tell from the photo, but there wasn't a heck of a lot of sunshine.  I didn't even need to unpack the sunglasses.

But Ft. Lauderdale was warm, or mostly warm enough. Better than Kansas, that is for sure.

Ftlauderdale 092

Oh, there was some sun, and we had a whole day of exploring, walking along the beach, and dining by the ocean at H20 Cafe  The food was great, the view even better.

And yes, my wine was almost empty before my food arrived, for lunch. It was vacation time!!

Ftlauderdale 106

We only had the one day and night together there, but we squeezed in two ocean side meals.  Dinner was at our hotel, and I fell in love with the back lit menus.

The veranda was a bit chilly, and other guests left to eat inside. But we were near a heater, and in a more closed off spot, so the wind didn't bother me, I just wore layers and braved it.  When you only have one night on the beach, you just have to go for it and not complain about a little cool air.

Because it is OCEAN AIR!!!!!!!!

And worth a couple of shivers here and there.

Ftlauderdale 100

This was my tip top, best ever, most favorite hotel to stay at.  It was pricey. But, for just one night, we didn't mind.  I loved all the details, our room had plantation shutters, lace curtains, gingerbread, and lots of white wicker.

Ftlauderdale 112

Pretty furniture too.  Oh, yes there was a mattress on that pretty bed frame.

Ftlauderdale 111

But we moved it to the seating area, so we could prop the patio doors open and be near the ocean waves all night.  The room was a little chilly (like my whole trip) and the outdoors was warmer than the indoors, so having the doors open warmed me up.

And nothing is as soothing as listening to the waves.

Ftlauderdale 109

Cute entry ways to the rooms, huh?

I wish I could've stayed longer, but I was happy and lucky to get one night there. Of course, the rest of my trip wasn't too shabby either. I went to the Land of Guncles.  I thought I'd hitch hike a free ride to Florida with my husband, "swing by" and visit family a bit, and enjoy being warm during the middle of a freezing Kansas winter.

Well……. while the Guncles have a heart warming and  welcoming home, it was forecasted to be 25 degrees in Jacksonville.  And "swinging by" to visit Jacksonville while in Ft. Lauderdale is like telling someone who is visiting Lawrence, Kansas that they should "swing by" St Louis while they are in town.

Which is not close.

But Jax from Ft. Lauderdale is even further.

And so worth the drive.  I even got to pick some flowers and oranges from the garden before anything froze.

I'll have more pictures from the wonderful world of guncles next time.  It was very festive there!

Some holiday projects

family, guncles, holiday decor

Bfast santa 035

Was Santa good to you this year?  I think I was pretty good to Santa, myself.

Bfast santa 001

I found this guy at a charity thrift shop for 75 cents.  He wasn't brand new, but not quite into the category of vintage yet.

Bfast santa 033

I gave Santa a makeover with some lux velvet, a rhinestone buckle, wool roving and goat hair.

Bfast santa 036

I was trying to keep it a no sew project, and I like the effect of the two toned coat, with the dark, rich velvet bottom that I added and the velvet belt.  The material that made up his jacket seems to be just fine with just the top showing.

Bfast santa 034

I couldn't get his sack of toys to work as a no sew piece, though, I had to get out the dreaded needle and thread to stitch up a sack made of felted wool.

Then, I stuffed it and added some presents wrapped in vintage papers, a tiny gold horn torn from a 50s Christmas corsage, and candy canes made from twisted chenille stems from mini Shiny Brites.

Ornieparty 005

The velvet I used for Mr. Claus was a unique piece. It was lined with felted wool. I used it to make these stockings too. (please avert your eyes from the awful sewing job I did on these stockings! I should NOT have used fancy gold thread that really stands out and shows my lack of skill, I should have gone with the color of the material instead)

One, complete, for Guncle Kevin.  And one in a kit for Guncle Randy who loves to craft.

Ornieparty 004

Along with the stockings, I sent them a clear ball with them inside all decked out as elves. It is a picture I took of them at their wedding and I added a tag at the top with the date.  On the back, it says, "Finally!" (They waited almost 20 years to be legal)

Ornieparty 006

These guys always appreciate a hand made gift.  Randy is a crafter too, and understands the love that goes into something created just for someone special.  I hope he will enjoy making his own present….

Ornieparty 030

This year's Christmas cards featured the angel I made for the Nature's Blessings journal swap.  I had a few extras left over and thought they would be appropriate. I didn't have quite enough to do many cards, but was able to whip up a few.  I'm not all that good about mailing cards anyway.

Angels 002

A couple of other angels got makeovers this year too. When I saw seashell angles at Kohls, I knew that I needed to get them for my sisters, in remembrance of our Florida trip in October.

Angels 006

But of course, they needed a foofing.

Angels 003

Crowns, lots of ribbons, sea shells from the trip, sparkling doodads… and more. This is the back view. That poor little angel has so much stuff goobered onto her wings, she'll be lucky to ever lift off again.

Angels 009

The one for Bobbie got a necklace and a scattering of hearts on her skirt (Bobbie's last name is Valentine).

Big, Fat, Travel Journal and how-to’s- Part Two and some digital photo vacation tips

Books, family, guncles, how to's, photography, Travel

Photobook 011

Where were we? Oh yes, in the middle of the travel journal.  This book is made the way I did the Nature's Blessing Journals for the swap, and there are directions on how to make these type of books from scratch in my online tutorial, here.

In the tutorial, are  ideas on finishing pages too, if you'd like more details to make one of your own.

This page is showing the inside of a card that Guncle Randy made for me. So I added pictures to it from our Bachelor Party Craft Day.

The polka dot and glitter tape borders are from the dollar bin at Target, what a deal!

Photobook 012

Here it is with the card that he made for me closed.  Greeting cards are great to add to journals and scrapbooks, you glue down the back and can add to the inside of them.

Photobook 021

During our craft day in Mt Dora, we worked on Randy's wedding decor. So I used some of the fall toned paper from the projects to make this page. Over it, is a leaf (outlined in brown marker for a shadow effect) from the velvet hat he bought,  instant photos from that day, a heart shaped shell I found on the beach,  and one of the mini garlands we were making for his centerpieces.

I tied a bit of baker's twine to the two little wooden skewer sticks, glued them down, then glued the garland pieces right on to the string.  For the centerpiece, I punched holes in the leaves with words and tied them to the string, but this way seemed to be a better fit for the book.

The words, "Mount Dora" were cut out of a brochure we picked up.

Photobook 022

On the adjacent page, I used an October book page from a garden journal to make a background and pocket. I inked the edges in green, and highlighted "October" with Stickles glitter.

With Tim Holtz Distress markers, I drew a pink cottage and Karen's sweet poodle. I like those markers for this kind of work, because you can still see through them to the text below.  For detail, I used a black ink pen and opaque white  marker.

The pocket is perfect for business cards I gathered while shopping downtown.

Photobook 013

Another way to use greeting cards, is to punch holes in them and tie them directly into the book itself, instead of gluing them down to the pages.  At the Ringling Bros. museum, I picked up a couple circus cards and tied them into my journal.  I covered the inside with brochure pages from the museum, added photos, and colorful rick rack trim.

I thought the polka dot tape was festive and circus-y too.

The sunshine yellow flower got a clown face center.

Books 007

I thought that the outside of the card was plenty cute, and left it as it was. A few ruffles was all it needed.  Not every bit of the book needs to be covered.

On the opposite page, I used the museum grounds map as a background for photos. The pictures are outlined with brown to make them stand out a bit.

Books 005

This is a map of the coast, with a few photos, accented with polka dot tape.  I cut the figures out of one picture and shadowed them by outlining with the brown marker.  And added a ruffle and a half flower to the bottom.

When I do the backgrounds, I like torn edges, and keep it all a little rough, not perfectly cut.  I also like to have lots of peek-a-boo bits like the ruffle and flower petals.

This one was fun.  Bobbie and Sissy were posed in front of a giant lobster, and I slipped their cut out silhouettes under a netting from an old hat, and added my picture over it for dimension.

The netting is held down at the top and bottom with a piece of glued down ribbon.

Here is a close up to see the details.

I might have liked this one better if I'd used a blue background, but I layered it back at the hotel room, then when I got home and went through the photos, these are the ones I thought would be cute on this page. Brown is okay, and since it wasn't planned ahead, I had to make it work. But if I had it to do over again, I'd have used blue.

Sometimes it is nice to have some simple pages, like this travel brochure page with a ruffled ribbon and a single outlined photo, then an unadorned greeting card from the circus.

Here, I have folded a piece of paper in half, and glued down the back of it. Ribbons are glued to the front and back to make a tie, and charms we found at a Sarasota bead shop are added to the ends of the ribbons.

I bought a vintage photo album at a junk shop and the beach pictures from it were the perfect addition to many of  my pages.  One is used here with lace medallions as trim.

When the folded blue paper is untied and opened, you can see the picture inside.

Another full photo with a beach view is above it, and is outlined with blue.  The figure next to it is cut out for variation.   I find it more interesting to have different shapes and sizes of pictures than to show the same beach background over and over, exactly the same behind each person.

Now, I just love beaches to death, but for the sake of the art journal, this layout is a little more interesting than a row of same size, same background pictures.

A stip of polka dot tape makes a simple, and easy border. With a marker and white opaque ink, I've highlighted the words, "sea princesses" that I saw in the text of the old paper that I was using.

One afternoon of our trip was spent driving around and looking up past addresses of our Great Grandma Nellie, Great Aunt Caroline, and Grandma Smith.

When I saw this sheet music with Nellie in the title, I knew I wanted to use it for this day. I added a vintage ocean picture, and cut out three girls from very old magazine to glue over it, then wrote the addresses we'd looked up on the rest of the paper.

I doodled shells, and hearts around the words, and then added some glitter and a rhinestone.

Part of my trip included a flight from Florida to New Hampshire for the Guncles wedding. While it makes an odd color palette for the book ( sunny beach tones and fall hues) it was even weirder to pack the suitcases for both climates.

Here, I have some pumpkin themed tissue paper crumpled up and glued down as a background, and over that, I've added photos and some velvet flowers from a hat Randy found while we were out shopping in Mt. Dora.

The adjacent page matches, and has a banner cut out of the wedding announcement.

A photo from the ceremony is layered over the program, with some lace trim, and orange velvet ribbon, topped off with more blooms and an autumn butterfly.

This page is a plain, wallpaper backdrop, with four fun photos. I left all four of them intact, but notice that I did cut them to slightly different sizes? Each is outlined in ink to make them stand out a bit, and one page has some doodles down the side of the pictures.

Here are some tips I follow for digital photos while on vacation:

  • Pack your battery charger!
  • If you are using your camera phone, edit the pics with something like the Snapseed ap before posting them. Crop, brighten and sharpen for better photos.
  • For your phone or camera both, DELETE all noticeably bad pictures daily. Blurry, unfocused, bad angles, snaps should   be cleaned out to save space, and to save time when you are ready to upload to your computer at home.
  • I email myself the photos I want to keep from my phone, then open them on my computer when I get home.  I then delete most of the photos from the phone, so that I don't have so many on there that I can't find the faves that I want to see.
  • Take a lot more photos than you think you will need.  This will give you more to chose from.
  • When you get back home and upload, be selective with the pictures.  If you've taken hundreds, narrow it down to dozens. Really.  I know it is hard, but honestly, you will enjoy having the best ones to keep and you don't need so many duplicates.  Pretend you are at an optician's exam.  Remember how the Dr. will ask, "This one? Or this one?"  With multiple photos of the same scene, clean out by comparing them one at a time, to chose the best couple from the multitudes.
  • But watch out for hidden goodies!  If you have a group shot and one person has made a face, another has her eyes closed, and a third is drop dead gorgeous, consider cropping the picture to be a close up beauty shot of just the stand out person.
  • Here is a big one for me, I tend to tilt my camera a lot. So, I have to be careful to straighten each picture before cropping.  Its very distracting to see the ocean in the background sliding away to the side of the picture.  A straight horizon line with water is very important.  Same with ceilings and walls for indoor shots.
  • After straightening, figure out what needs cropped. Crop some pics in close, and leave the backgrounds in others.  You'll want variety.  But if there is a big expanse of ceiling showing, ten feet of driveway in front of your subjects, or a plain, boring wall, get rid of it. Keep backgrounds that are attractive, or tell a story about where you are. But if the backdrop is unnecessary, crop and focus on the subject of the picture.
  • I like Picmonkey for my editing. The site is self explanatory and easy to use.
  • When editing, use Tooth Whitening sparingly.  Yes, make the subject more attractive, but don't make them look unnatural. Same with Eye Bright.  And while I'm sure everyone would appreciate less wrinkles, please don't iron out the faces to look like the person is one of those bad, "After" pictures in a spread on plastic surgery gone wrong.
  • My favorite use for Wrinkle Remover is to blur backgrounds to really make the foreground pop.
  • If there is a glaring color that stands out in the background, like an orange sign peeking through a pretty tree scene or a bright blue shirt on someone walking by in the distance, I go to Eye Color, and chose gray to draw over the bright color and tone it down.  I don't want the veiwer's eye to be led to something that stands out and distracts from the subject of the photo.
  • If you are planning on using the pics in a scrapbook like I did, make sure you leave room for cutting them down to various sizes after they are printed. If you overly crop, and then print them all the same size, you have no space left to cut them down to make some smaller for the album. And I think that the albums look much more interesting with a mix of sizes.
