A Handmade Christmas Countdown

holiday decor

0

This year, I decided to feature some of my hand made ornies each day as a countdown to Christmas.

1

I posted them on IG and FB daily and thought I would share them all at once with you here too.

2

Some are special, with family stories behind them, like the previous ones with family photos (my immediate family, and my great grandmother and her sister) or this one made from one of Sugarwing's old shoes.

3

This is one of Dewdrop's baby shoes.

4

Others are just for fun.

5

This was a scrap of watercolor paper I had been practicing on, years ago, and came across in a box of junk. I cut it into a ball shaped ornament and hung it on the tree. (The snowy effect is done by sprinkling salt onto the wet paint)

6

This is one that I made at a craft day with pals.

7

And this one reminds me of my early vintage paper days. I went through a paper doll  making stage, that was every bit as fun as playing with the paper dolls I had as a child.

8

Once, a friend gave me a packet of photo paper she didn't want and there were a few photos in it.  I didn't realize they were family pictures her husband had copied years ago, just thought they were some old photos they didn't want (I personally have tons of old pictures like this, so thought nothing of it) and made one into an ornament. She was here for craft day, and had fun making decorations with the images herself. It was a nice surprise for her to find them in my studio on craft day.

9

It doesn't  matter if the pieces have a special meaning for me, each is special.

10

And I love unpacking the box of goodies each year and looking through my treasures as I add them to the tree.

11

I will leave you with the rest of the countdowns and wish you a very, very Merry day.

Actual grand fairies

Dew Drop, fairies, family, holiday decor, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art

Making Sugarplum fairies has kept me so busy that I am just now wrapping gifts, today.

My husband is in Chicago at a Chiefs game, Ryan is at work, Sugarwings with her mom, and Dewdrop won’t be arriving with her daddy til tomorrow.

D689B172-B0A1-496A-B518-550C3386A924

That means I have an empty dining room to spread out gifts and get them packaged up. I just finished my shopping yesterday, on a fun day out with some of the family, letting them choose their own pressies instead of trying to surprise them.

As much as I love surprises, sometimes you just gotta let them do the picking.  And even though I’d heard that yesterday was the busiest shopping day of the year, I still preferred strolling through stores with people I love and going out to lunch over ordering from Amazon at home.

It felt more like Christmas that way.  Oh, I used Amazon for quite a bit, but a shopping date was like the icing on the Christmas cookie to top off my holiday festivities.

I also made some gifts, like this Sully Sugarplum Fairy for a great niece.  It is as pink, glittery, and gaudy as possible for a very sweet lil princess.

I used another photo of her on a card.

This banner is for The Guncles’ nature tree.  They can take them apart to use as ornies or hang as is.

I used the painted brown paper table covers from a Snowbird’s Song as a background.    I also made use of it as wrapping paper this year.

Speaking of wrapping paper, I’d better get to work. I am sitting at the table having my morning coffee, surrounded by stacks of gifties and rolls of paper.

Transforming a snow globe

holiday decor

IMG_7717

Last summer, I found a boxful of ugly snow globes at an estate sale.  I had big plans to remake them, but ended up setting them out for sale at A Snowbird's Song.

IMG_7716

Apparently, no one wanted them… So I decided I needed to reclaim them for my original purpose. Some are easier to open than others, this one was pretty easy to get apart.

IMG_7718

The snowman was exchanged for a little pink angel, and I made an arch from wired tinsel and millinery blooms and placed it over the vintage tree behind her. Then, poured on tons and tons and generous glops of glue.

The glue was camouflaged with mica flakes.

IMG_7719

The wooden base got a coat of distressed white paint, some crepe paper and sparkly bits.

I am kinda glad no one else bought this $1 item, and I look forward to redoing the others that were not purchased.

A tree filled with Sugarplum fairies

fairies, holiday decor, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, vintage paper/collage art

IMG_7816

I have been having waaayyyy too much fun!

IMG_7822

These are addictive, I order making them.

IMG_7829

There are so many ways to create them, and I find it hard to stop.

IMG_7819

If you would like one, they are available in the Boutique.

IMG_7807

Aren't they sweet?

IMG_7816s

They range in price from $9- $16 depending on size, materials. and time put into them.

IMG_7826

They are all done from prints of vintage photos, hand tinted and embellished with as many foofy, vintagey goodies I could put on them.

IMG_7828

They have been a delight to work on, even though the heat has been out in the studio.  I've had a space heater blasting on my toes, but these sweeties have taken my mind off of the cold room.

IMG_7821

I find them "heart warming".

New in the Boutique, Christmas pretties!!

fairies, holiday decor, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, vintage paper/collage art

IMG_7725

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving? Mine was quiet, but that was nice, I had time to create, photograph a variety of Christmassy goodies, and get things listed in the Boutique!

(I do have kits from the birdcage angel available. Please contact me if interested, they are not in the Boutique yet)

IMG_7731

I am pretty proud of myself, even though I am bordering on being too late for holiday sales.

IMG_7752

Most of the creations are examples for A Snowbird Song.

IMG_7755

Class samples, as well as ideas for using the supply table to make things during free time.

IMG_7764

I also made some collages and ornies using the images from the collage sheets for the classes.

IMG_7763

Those images were so lovely, I was happy to have a few pages of them to work with.

IMG_7734

Not everything is adorned with a hand made Sugarplum Fairy or an angel, tho.

IMG_7760

There are a few other ornies too.

And yet to come? Sugarplum Fairy Banners, always a favorite of mine.

There is more to list, and I hope to get to it soon.  I've had a ton of fun making things. You can find these festive, holiday creations here:

Transforming an egg carton

holiday decor, vintage paper/collage art

IMG_4220

If you hadn't seen the title, would you know this was an egg carton?  It is a six pack size, and I packed on the foof, layer after layer after layer to camouflage it and try change its look for a swap at Once Upon an Easter.

(I'm am away in GA right now, and by this date, the swap should be passed, and I will be the delighted, new owner of my very owned decked out egg carton made by my partner- photos to come when I return)

IMG_4225

It looked more like an egg carton once it was wrapped up to pack. (I sure hope it makes the trip safely!)

IMG_4222

And from the inside, you can definitely tell what it is.  I added a hand painted egg, just in case…

I also filled it with Georgia peaches (pulled off one my vintage hats), some flowers, pictures cut from old Easter postcards, and a few other tidbits.

IMG_4223

Our swappers are secret, all I knew was that my partner likes pink and neutral. I hope I didn't go over the top pink for her, it is much more colorful than neutral.

It is always a challenge to do a swap, and hope that your piece is what the other person will like.  And to redo an egg carton into a treasure box? That was a stretch for me. I look forward to seeing the other creations, because I had to struggle with mine and I'd like to see how others have pulled off the transformation.

Thank you for hosting, Betti! This one had me thinking, and I enjoyed doing it.

So, along with the tiny baskets and fluffy critters decked in pastel posies, I have made some seasonal banners too.

I don’t know what it is about banners that draws me in like it does.

Kind of like crafting art journals, I am every bit as wrapped up in those.

0F742F24-880E-4567-B5EC-D0328165D5D4

Did I mention that I made so many books to sell that I couldn’t possibly take them all with me?

Yes, I get a bit obsessive when I am left alone in the studio with some time to create… I tend to prolifically keep going until I run out of those specific supplies or the world interferes and I need to move on.

8311E046-66C0-453C-AE34-760030C647F4

Which means that when I return, I should have plenty of books to add to my Boutique.  I’ll show you some pictures soon.

I am slightly in love with them.

Sprucing up in the Studio for my Galentines

bird song art event, cottage, holiday decor, housework, parties, studio tour, Valentine's Day

IMG_3479

While getting ready for A Lovebird's Song, I did a full on, happy new year, delve into the corners, serious cleaning.

IMG_3477

I even washed and changed the curtains.

IMG_3476

And rearranged some of the storage cabinets.

IMG_3443

I went so far as to take everything off the tops of the furniture pieces, wipe it all down, and rearrange them too.

IMG_3445

Originally, I was going to box up things to get them out of the way, and just set out some Valentine decorations.

IMG_3444

But I got started on cleaning and just couldn't stop.  I didn't even fill a single box of stuff to get things out of the way, I took care of each item  by putting them away properly or getting rid of things I didn't want.

IMG_3455

I even dusted branches on the ceiling.  That is a rare occurrence.

(or should I say, a singular one?)

IMG_3453

Afterwards, it felt so fresh and bright, I was pretty happy with myself.

IMG_3449

The studio is basically just a workroom most of the year, and gets neglected when I am busy crafting.

IMG_3447

I should invite people over more often, maybe I'd keep it tidier.

IMG_3472

Because I sure am enjoying having it detailed!

IMG_3450

Although, I have to admit, I was beyond exhausted when the party ended.  I threw myself into prepping and cleaning for days ahead, then had an emergency with an icy driveway that had me spreading numerous, 40lb bags of salt on it, out there in the dark, cold, night before everyone arrived the next day.

And of course, I didn't have my trusty sidekicks, Terry and Guncle Randy to ease the labor load while I was teaching the projects.

And each year, I do get a teensy bit older…. That is a very hard one to admit.  But I was feeling it!

Still, I adore doing these classes, even if I am a worn out, old lady when they end.
