A bit of my holiday decor

This year, I got my Christmassy Foof up early.

Again.

4315CE30-32A2-4130-9430-362570E17556

Typically, I use the excuse of hosting an art event or being on the holiday home tour for decorating before Thanksgiving.  But this year, I just wanted to.

F589CA5D-D638-4074-8819-DEA877CE2045

And that is enough of a reason.

7EC8A7FA-206E-45AD-958A-3BE319AADFCB

For me, it is scaled back, not as elaborate as in the past.  But more than last year.

2020 was hard.  I needed some sparkle to lighten my load, but I wasn’t up to the full spread.

This year, I decided to set out a few more things.

It doesn’t usually take much time to do, since I pack it all up in a very organized way.  But last year, when I dug through a few boxes for bits and pieces, I made quite a mess of all of it.

These photos are of my dining room hutch.

It is a winter forest, with trees, deer and fairies.

BE9E61CC-B6A2-4B2B-B8D6-071AF0E08B44

And lots of white lights!

I have a love/hate relationship with the battery powered LEDs.  Over all, I love them to pieces.  They run on remote control so they can be added to hard to reach places or spots with no plugs.  They have a timer so they will automatically come on each day then turn themselves off.  They have multiple settings and look pretty in any setting.

But oh man- the tangly mess they make!  That long, long wire gets all twisty and stuck.  Ugh.

40838EDD-0DDA-4D51-A42A-5BEFD3A43412
But the pros outweigh the cons.  I like having lights on this piece, and there is no plug in anywhere, so the battery operated strings make all the difference.

28041B30-98FE-4A9C-AA06-DC0C1660DD86

The main part of the house is all that I’m decorating this year, and I’ll have more photos of it later.  Some years, I do every single room, and I love it that way.  But I am pretty happy with just the downstairs decked.  Every morning, all of the power strips are flipped before I even have my coffee, so I can enjoy the twinkling lights all day long.

And that is very satisfying.

How to make folded paper Christmas balls

holiday decor, how-to projects, vintage paper/collage art, wallpaper

522FC5B1-3CF9-4421-8869-42099AC8F70D

These layered balls ended up being pretty easy to make once I figured it out.  My first ones didn’t come out as nicely, but they got better as I made a few.
7ED1B0A9-F5C1-40A1-A5CA-8B0353EA2789
My first mistake?  Using only vintage papers, and not being careful to find ones that aren’t brittle.

I discovered that the ideal paper is scrapbooking card stock, but since I love the old stuff so much, I tried using some book pages and wallpaper too.  Plus, a mix looks pretty together.

Vintage flocked wallpaper is ideal, and some more sturdy wallpapers are too.  But most of the antique ones disintegrate when folded.

I used some Xmas wrapping paper also.

If you have a fragile paper you just love, and really want to use, maybe try backing it with card stock first.

94CA83ED-8600-4906-A4CC-914880E5D5DA

These were some that worked for me, as well as some book pages. To test it, fold the paper a few times and see if it cracks.  If not, it should work okay.
84784D8E-D7EE-4DC8-9904-6C627680983A
Cut and fold all of the pages ahead of time, so you have a pile to work with and not have to pause while gluing.

Fold each piece with the most interesting side inwards, so you are gluing the outsides to each other.
4E0A986E-EC9A-4560-AAE3-4AC42662EFEB
Glue one folded piece to the next until you have a stack that looks like this.

Another discovery that I made is that it’s a good idea to glue all of the folded circles together and set them aside to dry.  If you try to make the orb while the glue is wet, the paper is more fragile and will easily tear.

BF308834-C96A-4B93-9DA6-68FF11CA09FD

While still folded, you can ink the edges.

93C48250-68E6-4A23-93E6-35A9A1496142

Add some strong glue (I like The Ultimate) along the folded edge.

4F983F90-4101-4823-AC52-73BE2DDC012A

Cut ribbon or string, and fold it in half with a loop at the end.

(I used pipe cleaners down the center of some, and it did work, but for me, it was too easy to poke through the papers with it, string or ribbon is better).

Then stick the ribbon into the glue, with the loop at the top and the two ends hanging out of the bottom.

Open the pages.

Apply glue to both half circle sides, then press them together to make the orb.  Smoosh them together and there it is!  You might need to carefully pick each layer apart, gently manipulate them, and form the circle.

If you get a tear when opening it up, just attach an extra circle over that segment.

56B603CC-D4D5-40F6-90EB-D55B2AEB7BA8

You can use the two trailing ends or your ribbon or string to tie a bundle of netting and ribbons to the bottom.

063664DB-CA52-472C-9464-7DACA3AFE626

Or use them to tie on charms.  Or do both! (I liked the idea of book charms with the old book pages).

2B18A3B7-F620-42F1-A237-E7AD52C12463
How many circles did I use?  Well, they are all different.  The thinner the paper, the more you need.  The heavier papers fill out nicely without as many. And because they are thick, too many makes the stack so high that when you put them together you have a huge gap in the center.

So, about 20 for thin papers, half that much for heavy ones.

An elfin makeover

AA28BE9E-38AC-4BC8-A386-9AAF66CA7E75
This is the after from my mini redo.  I had the cottage halls decked and thought I was done, but decided this area wasn’t quite what I wanted it to be.

EF28B019-DFE2-4C1C-A56D-4CF1DF726EFC

This is the before.  Cute stuff, but for my home, there might have been a tad too much red.  And it’s was too busy with lots of small things lined up.

F8184918-594C-4555-A9AD-51965882EEF1
So I fetched this hunk of gorgeous-ness from the studio, glittered up some elves, and moved a few of the guys to another location.

This cabinet was a gift from a Peep, and it is such a lovely piece.  It was just what I needed to take away the cluttery feeling of so many tiny figurines together.

C360E0EB-DBCC-4745-9990-D87DDE90B168

The glue is still wet on this fella’s rhinestone buttons.  Aren’t these sprites sweet in silver and gold glitter?

F5B931AF-3425-40F3-A72A-45C2E856EBA2

I used cream chalk paint over the high gloss red glaze, and sprinkled glitter or mica onto the paint before it dried.

42318707-57AA-4D73-94D7-9EA9C3D2BBC6

The red felt pants on the other gnomes had a wash of white paint over the bright fabric to made it look pink as it dried.

I had debated whether or not to mess with this, since all the decorating was done, but decided that I’d enjoy it more if I made a few little changes.

And I do!

The life cycle of a pumpkin

Goldendoodle Puppies, Hens, holiday decor

SavingPNG

Last fall, we took a trip to the pumpkin patch, after an extremely LONG time of no regular outings. The grand fairies and I typically had a schedule of getting out and exploring on a regular basis. In the summer, it was the pool, park, zoo, and more. In the fall, we'd go to the pumpkin patch multiple times and host pumpkin craft parties after.

2020? not quite the same.  But we masked up, and social distanced our way through the punkin patch, and made the most of a day out.  We were pretty happy to be there, too, even with the restrictions and changes that had to be implemented.

IMG_2225

We probably bought way too many pumpkins, hoping to have a carving party with Fin and Clover, but the weather didn't cooperate, and we couldn't get together outside, so I made use of the gourds as best as I could.

When the pups were tiny, I liked to do photo shoots with them for their new families, so these were great to use as props for posing puppies.

IMG_0737

After Halloween, I spray painted some of them white and added a touch of glitter to the tops, and placed them into flower pots in front of the house.  Others got turned into pies.

(The white pumpkins make the best pies, uhm, not the painted white ones, the REAL white ones.)

SavingPNG 2

Now, it is time to clean up the front porch and get rid of the pumpkins who have seen better days. They are squishy and wrinkled, but instead of tossing them out, they went to the hens.  The birds don't eat the rind, so didn't even bother with the painted exterior. They went right for the tasty seeds inside.

I guess I didn't have too many pumpkins after all! At least the chickens didn't think so. We have been giving them a couple a week and they are pretty happy with the treats.

Merry Christmas!

We had a surprise visitors!  Dewdrop and her Daddy hid under our tree on Christmas Eve, Sugarwings and I did not know they’d be here.

It just isn’t Christmas unless Sugarwings’ Daddy falls asleep on the sofa with her on his lap.

She was so happy to have him here.

And this goofball brings joy with her wherever she is.

Everyone was enjoying the surprise.

5617E61E-23C3-4AF5-886B-6240F841CB00

There was pie baking, cookie decorating, fairy wing creating, and candle pouring throughout the day.

47C0FAFA-F209-4A1C-893C-7E58D4D844DE

On the day before the night before Christmas, Sugarwings and I were missing our littlest, goofiest fairy.  She made some purple wings for her baby sister on craft day, and was sad she wasn’t here to give them to her.

We hadn’t set up the tree in Dewdrop’s bedroom, and I hadn’t gotten our big tree out either.  We decided it would cheer us up get the large tree out of the closet after all (at bedtime) and she decorated it with all of Dewdrop’s ornaments so we’d feel close to her.

Then, there was Dewdrop and her daddy, sitting under the that tree the next day!

218CD375-0769-4677-9F70-E56BCFA9E179

Typically, I spend hours making sure the tree is perfectly decorated.  This is the year, that I discovered that it isn’t the way the tree looks that matters.  I have enjoyed my mostly naked trees with just twinkle lights and no ornaments beyond some pine cones for Ryan.  And I love this quickly set up tree decorated by one grand fairy with my other grand fairy’s things.

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

Thank you for the Solstice Wing party, Katie Tree!

Katie Tree brought over all the supplies we needed to create fantasy fairy wings to wear for winter solstice.

The rest of the family was making life size wings, but I wanted to check out the materials and get a feel for how they went together so I made a few smaller ones to put on our naked, untrimmed Christmas tree. 2C2D3F98-8ECF-464D-8077-D6158EA0CBB8
I am glad I tried it out on a smaller scale first, I got to know how to work with the supplies.  I gave one set to Sugarwings to destroy with the lighter and heat gun, which she enjoyed doing and which showed us just how much heat was too much.

A8C53E4F-457D-42D0-9F68-90860E3773BA
While I was just “winging it” with quick twists of wire, everyone else was on track to craft works of art.

0615029E-8A07-4128-BB86-5B2E5B5BDCFE

They each drew a pattern into cardboard, and traced it with wire.  And yes, elf ears were provided as an essential part of making the wings.

87007366-788C-4789-AC9C-636237AE8381

When my husband heard about family wing night, he was pretty excited  til he realized that a bunch of vegans and vegetarians were actually coming over to make cellophane wings, not chicken wings.

0464A125-A5A0-4204-927B-C121E8795C57

They are all turning out wonderfully, so I think I will have to whip up a pair for myself too.  Plus, with the giant wingspan, they are perfect for marking your territory for social distancing!

61C6F800-EDD5-42FF-A3D8-1F6F00FB5DE6

Once the wire is ready, you lay the piece onto cellophane and use spray adhesive to attach it on both sides, press it into place, let dry, trim away excess, then melt with the heat gun for a tight fit.
AEDD49B3-AEF0-436F-9DEA-32048C03DB84
I learned with the mini practice wings that too much glue or too much heat could cause them to turn opaque.  And getting too close with the heat melted holes into them.

Once they are done, I’ll get the girls to model the finished product, photos coming soon!

I also made one set of wings, inspired by the angels on Victorian Christmas cards.

I hadn’t planned on doing a lot of decorating this year, and kept the inside of the house mostly just twinkle lights and plain trees with pine cones.

D710465B-E704-4C60-A799-F05CFA1DCC83

Since our only get togethers with friends can be outdoors and socially distant, and we have been blessed with some nice days to enjoy them, I decided to “spruce” up our yard a little.

F3730396-7DAA-4A60-9326-2A39620D89A6

Sugarwings took the John Deere Gator back in the woods with her grandfather to trim some trees in the way of the trails out there.  I asked them to bring me back some branches. Then stuck the evergreens everywhere.

43157067-C64D-462B-96E2-A7637F84C56C

Even in the patio umbrella stands.  And in all of the empty pots. Some, I just laid on the tabletops.

916381A9-286D-4D2D-AA9A-AF8A95D62ED0

The flower pots are topped off with rocks to keep the pup from digging in them, so the branches are staying pretty good, stuck down in the dirt and wedged between rocks.

CF86CEFB-E55C-4407-9627-2E654588ECD1

Some small branches were put on top of pots and had spray painted pumpkins left  from Halloween added over the greens.  Plus a little glitter on top of the pumpkins.
0464C8FB-08C6-4229-A3A6-2A71561C1494
The patio itself got a sprinkling of glitter too.  It started out as an accident, I was glittering up an ugly sweater and made a mess.  It looked good, so I dumped out some more.

6247D484-EEAF-4AFA-8C48-80BDE44F0D25

There are evergreen branches poking out of every available surface out back, and it not only brightens up a dull, gray, Kansas winter, it smells nice too.  They last for at least a month.  It probably didn’t even take me a half hour to place branches around the yard, and it sure brightened the area up.

I just hope our weather offers random nice days for get togethers all season, long after the branches are thrown out.  With summer behind us and the virus still lingering, we appreciate every opportunity we get to gather (safely) with people we care about.

Hooked on gingerbread houses

celebrations, cottage, family, Food and Drink, holiday decor

2CBFBD9D-2A86-4364-B859-AEAC92EDC223
After having so much fun making wooden birdhouses into gingerbread, I just had to make more.

Of course, I tend to go all in with a new craft and flood the market with my creations.  But this year, I was making them just for us, so reigned myself back just a little.

And after a decade of making real gingerbread houses that looked like a toddler had done the work, I was excited to be working on one with paint instead of icing. Puffy paint, meant for tee shirts is so much easier to use than those plastic bags of icing that come with the house kits.

68F27F8C-D2E0-4DC2-AA0A-9240ED06675C

Since I was using wood and chipboard, I thought it was important to use cookie colored paint, as much as I like pastels, I wanted it to look as realistic as it could.  Plus the village was going into our Cocoa Corner, where our colors were more traditional than my other holiday decor.

618F9A83-FD41-4042-9A5D-600374D671CF

Sugarwings has a couple to finish too, and they will be squeezed in when done.  There is always room for more!

We have already had to shuffle the area around a little.  At first, we were using our tea party cups from Sugarwings’ other grandma who passed away.   But with the giant, cocoa bombs we made, we figured we had to get some bigger mugs, so switched the dainty cups for hefty, Santa mugs.

82BC31F9-A1C3-40C4-8C7F-AFE07FDDC463

The largest, chipboard house is ideal storage for a ziplock baggie of cocoa bombs. The roof comes off, like a lid and there is plenty of space inside.

When we are ready for our cocoa parties, my grand fairy comes to this buffet to gather up all the supplies and set the table.  We have some very strict guidelines for drinking hot chocolate, first and foremost-

Cocoa parties can only occur in front of a lit Christmas tree!

A few more rules-

Tea party rules apply: polite chitchat, best manners, etc.

Watching Christmas shows on the TV while drinking cocoa is encouraged.

The table must have a cloth on it and napkins can be paper, but must be pretty.

Santa hats or antlers need to be on your head.

And some new $6 chair covers too

cottage, holiday decor

10E8D031-5D8F-47F4-93A2-BF85D648A83CI was so happy with the way the new curtains from Amazon updated and brightened up the hearth room, that I decided I wanted some slip on chair covers too. I already have full skirted ones that I typically cover up my dining room chairs with, but living with a teething puppy made those impractical.

C0461AF7-44B4-4F1B-93F8-7ECC8EA8F305

This is the chair in its natural state.  Which I like as is, but I do enjoy switching things up, and prefer the colors lighter for winter.

I was tempted to order cream or white covers, but was worried they might be a little transparent and the pattern underneath would show through.

45F767AF-3110-4645-A54D-B067473A698E

So I ordered this taupe that matches my velvet recliners in the living room.  After putting them on, and seeing how nice they were made, I think a white would be fine to try.  And at $6 each, I should go ahead and order another set.

A737D085-FB23-4253-A42F-353D6F050917
Their shade doesn’t really meld with my hutch.  But that tone is something that bugs me, anyway.  I love the piece and am thrilled to have found it, but it is too yellowey for me, and it is on my list for a redo. (Possibly a pale, pale greige with an umber glaze over it?)

But that will take some mental fortitude that I am not feeling right now.

The slipcovers are stretchy velour, sold as velvet.  Which I knew they wouldn’t be.  But didn’t care, because they have that velvety feel and seem lush. They probably should’ve been popped in the dryer to fluff out the wrinkles.

Eh. They are good enough, it’s not like I have company coming in the house this season.  I will get rid of wrinkles when Corona ends and I am inviting friends over again.

A Forever Gingerbread House

celebrations, family, Hand painted, holiday decor, Ryan

One of our favorite holiday traditions is making gingerbread houses.
9224DCC5-E1D2-49E8-8390-EACFDEAF1230
This started way back, when Sugarwings was even younger than in this photo.  She would have a house that was a work in progress for a month or so, adding to it as a craft project for the whole holiday season.

We never ate any of the candy, and were adamant about calling the goodies “decorations” never candy.  We saved them up and used them year to year, those candy pieces that come with the packaged houses do not rot.  And I even wonder if they are edible anyway?

When Dewdrop came along, she joined in too with her own house. But learning about not eating the decorations was hard for her.  We were constantly hollering, “That is older than you are!”

AB2514BC-A7D1-4481-B207-214210D517ED
In the last few years with the addition of new grand fairies joining the group, we have turned Ginger Bread Night into a family event and I started stocking up on clearance priced kits at the end of the year.    We still call out,

“Those decorations are older than Mayara!”

Because some of those gumdrops are honestly from ten years ago. No one is seriously tempted to eat them we just enjoy saying it.

When Ryan finally switched to a job where he could be around in the evenings, I discovered that he had an obsession with holiday baking shows and the Gingerbread wars were his favorite.  We watched them together and would plan our own super structures. (They still turned out like badly done kits, which is what they were, but we loved dreaming that we could accomplish artistry.)

09223574-4C20-4F25-B963-CBE69E9E24AB

Sugarwings and I decided to build a gingerbread village from wooden birdhouses in honor of her uncle, who loved the creations so much.

While mine is still not equal to the mastery of the shows Ryan and I watched together, I think that I do much better with paint than with royal icing.

0A10A1AE-82ED-4415-B3E5-265362B6A49A
And it had been awhile since I shared studio space with this kid.  She is now a teen who doesn’t appreciate being photographed while trying to concentrate, so don’t judge the grumpy face pictured here.  We had a great day together and look forward to making the rest of our village.
