The truth behind the photo shoot

give away, housework, jewelry, magazine pictures or articles, vintage paper/collage art

Img_6393 I am busily getting ready for the photo shoot of my master bedroom tomorrow morning. It was a last minute project that came up just a few days ago, and I have had the fairy grand baby for a few days, so I didn’t get a chance to set up till tonight.

I’m making up the bed nicely and sleeping on the couch so I will be ready and not have to rush in the morning!

The truth is, when I have a photo shoot, I do a lot of extras that aren’t involved with every day life.

I certainly don’t get a breakfast in bed tray complete with roses every morning!

The tray is all set up, all I need to do is add a muffin, coffee and juice for the pictures.Img_6390

I also did a quickie project, and dolled up these lamp shades.  That was about 1 minute per shade, all I did was wrap a bit of vintage trim around it and secure the trim with a rhinestone shoe clip.

The three shades each have a different trim on them, I like the non-matchy look.Img_6391

The window frame had nails sticking out of it from a past curtain style.  Those had to be covered before pictures, so I swagged a bit of lace that I usually use as a table runner in the dining room over the nails to hide them.Img_6392

The biggest change for the shoot was moving out my husband’s comfy chair.  He is out of town for now and won’t even know I messed with it, it will be back before he is.

But, in rearranging the chairs, I had a gap in the room, so brought in a stack of picnic baskets from the studio. They are all filled with ephemera for projects, but I’ll write a cute little paragraph about storing extra linens or something like that in a stack of baskets to save space.

We will pretend they are useful, not just filling a gap till they go back where they belong! Img_6394

Most of the time, the shelf of my mantel piece headboard is bare of junk.

But to foof it up for the pictures, I added a row of old bottles, that simply have some text cut from an old book tied on with pretty ribbon.

Tomorrow morning, I will add a single flower to each bottle.Img_6387

For now, the flowers are soaking in blue food coloring. I used to do this as a kid, pick Queen Anne’s Lace and place it into colored water. The stems draw up the color and tint the flower.

It was hard to find the pretty weeds, most around here are finished for the season.  I drove around until I found a decent patch to pick where I wouldn’t get chewed up by chiggers in the weeds, luckily, these were along a parking lot of an abandoned car dealership.  I could snip them from the pavement and not even have to walk out into the tall grass.

A police car turned in the lot and parked behind me, but the officer never got out of the car or said anything to me.  I guess it isn’t illegal to pick weeds at a closed business.  Although it might be considered trespassing, and it was dark out.

I guess I am about ready for Diane to show up with her camera tomorrow.  I’m off to the couch to get some rest. Chasing Sugarwings has worn me to a frazzle. It was fun, as always, but she is a busy bee.Img_6395

Before I go, I’ll show the apron I added to the August Giveaway, which I will call my "50’s Housewife Kit"

You get a frilly, sheer apron, a pair of pearl pink clip on earrings, and a lovely old brooch with a blue stone, all to wear as you spiff up your home while waiting for Mrs. Dickson to call.  (her calling card is included in the kit).

While you are dressed up for cleaning, and down on your knees, make sure you don’t forget to scour the corners of the floor with a scrub brush.

Pure Luck

family, housework

Shutters_002 Boy do I have some good friends. And I know how lucky I am to have them.

See the peeling shutter on the top window? That is what all my shutters looked like before today.

Shutters_008 Two of my craft night friends came over today and helped me scrape and repaint them!

We have done projects for each other, like helping Jen sand and prime her kitchen cabinets and doing a faux finish in Diane’s entryway.  Rhom

But the biggest and toughest project of them all has been Lori’s shed.

We hauled all the junk out, then cleaned and painted the shed for her, as a group.

We rented a spray gun and just shot paint all over everything.  Img085

One of the group, Diane, is a photographer. She and I got to talking about how cool it would be to do a before and after story about the shed, so she snapped some shots before we got started.Img083

I fetched a "few" of my pretties from my studio and staged the room, and got out my paint brush to foof things up a bit, so  Diane could take these shots.Img084

I wrote up a little article to go along with the photos and we sent the package into Romantic Homes, and it was published last summer.

I am lucky to be a part of a group of such giving, talented, and HELPFUL friends!

I think our buddy,  Shanna, is next for a redo project, she is house shopping, so is saving up her turn for something in the new home.Shutters_001

I was so relieved to have this eyesore taken care of today.  My Holiday Open House is less than a month away and those ragged shutters were one of the things that were making my eyes pop open at 3am with worry.

Thanks to my pals, I can start worrying about something else now.Shutters_009

But not about the eyesore that the yard had become, that is handled today too!

Sugarwings, my husband and I started the big fall  clean up.

He had taken down a 30 foot tall cedar tree that needed cut up and burned, along with sticks and leaves around the farm that were cluttering up the yard.

Our friends saw the tree laying out by the driveway, and commented "Karla is going all out for Christmas again, huh?"Shutters_005 Apparently, I am known for my excess and no one was surprised to see a 30 foot Christmas tree in my drive way.

But in a matter of hours, that tree was kindling and burned away in the bon fire pit behind the garden.

After climbing up and down ladders and scraping old paint all day, I was ready to relax by the warm fire and watch the last of the tree go up in flames while I sat back and sipped a glass of wine.

There is nothing like a crisp fall day when you can accomplish a lot of needed yard work and home repairs, enjoy the company of your friends, and then relax by a bonfire at the end of it all.

I think I have mentioned it before, I am pretty lucky!!

Procrastinating and Nit Picking

Etsy Goodies, Hand Painted Furniture, holiday decor, housework, I do tend to run on, don't I?, jewelry, magazine pictures or articles, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art, We're having a party

Xmas_cones_051  These cute little peat pots are on Etsy now for $9 a pair.  They have portions of a poem I cut out of a Victorian book tucked into the flowers, and a pansy picture from the same book on the front.

Now, why would I be listing on Etsy instead of working on my upcoming photo shoot? I listed a few things this morning, even though my shop is well stocked.Xmas_shoot_065

Maybe I am avoiding this?Xmas_shoot_063

And this?  Both of these rooms have to be cleaned up and Christmassed up by one week from today.Xmas_shoot_035

Its more fun to fine tune the decorating I already started in Sugarwings room.

Xmas_shoot_036

Playing with her pretty little pink things and fussing around with rearranging and adding to it, is so much better than taking a shovel to the studio and the library to clean them up!

Xmas_shoot_033 Beth gave my fairy grand baby this little angel night light.

I haven’t decorated her doll house yet- just a little bit of decking the halls so far. I am waiting till she is older and we can do it together.Xmas_shoot_032

A peek-a-boo angel is in a window.

Xmas_shoot_039

A pink and white reindeer is  on the roof, and that is enough for now.Xmas_shoot_038

I added a few more ornaments to her tree.

Xmas_shoot_043 And I did a bit of rearranging in the guest room too. Just added a few little details to the room.Xmas_shoot_044

I moved a few of the things that I’d brought in yesterday after looking at the photos I took.

I like to take snapshots of a room when I have rearranged it, then look at those to critique and see what needs changing.  The photos never look as good as the room does in "real life" and are a great tool in getting it right!Xmas_shoot_058

(can you see the glitter in the paint on the walls?)

I only made a few small changes and added a couple of things, but I am happier. What do you think compared to yesterday’s pictures?Xmas_shoot_042

I added more decorations to Grandma Nathan’s foil tree too.Xmas_shoot_047

I made a star for the top of it, with an old photo of my mom.

I got the idea from Beth who madeSilver_bella_orn

this star for part of her Silver Bella Swap.Xmas_shoot_057

These sheet music Victorian boots are from a couple of years ago and I found them when I attempted to get started cleaning my studio. So, I used that as a good excuse to stop cleaning and  took the boots over to the guest room and fussed around with them.Xmas_shoot_048

I put another under the glass tray top of this side table, with old post cards over a piece of rose patterned gift wrap.Xmas_shoot_055

Here is a close up of my Wilton Cake Decor crowns with old jewelry on this tiny tree.  I bought a big box of mixed cake toppers for $5, and even if these 6 crowns are all I use out of it, I am happy with the box!!

Xmas_shoot_060 I think I might be procrastinating a bit right now.

But I do see things that need changed in some of these photos, maybe I should go back up to the guest room and futz about again! Xmas_shoot_062

I don’t want to deal with THIS!! It is something I DON’T love about my home, the way the library becomes a catch all and books never get put away.

But, I’d better get to it, that mess won’t clean itself, and there are cameras on their way here in a week.

Thanks to all of you who are interested in participating in my Romantic Country Party on the 25th and will be showing photos of your homes that day too!

ps- Phyllis has a blog anniversery coming up, lets all wish her a happy birthday!

Sunday Morning Dog Barf

collections, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), flowers, housework

Washing_rugs_005 Its a beautiful Sunday morning at my Kansas Cottage, no road construction sounds thumping away in front of my house, a light breeze is blowing and the sun is glowing.

Washing_rugs_001 I can’t think of a more pleasant way to spend a sunny Sunday than scrubbing dog barf out of my rugs.

I love to collect these old hooked rugs, but they are hard to keep clean, they can’t just be thrown into the washer. I live with a houseful of men and three dogs, so these rugs get dirty.  Since I had to wash the dog mess out of one, I thought I’d bring all the brown looking kitchen rugs out to liven them back up.

To clean them, I line them along my slanted sidewalk and spray them with a hose.

This might sound weird, but I really enjoy watching the dirt wash away and the rugs slowly turn back to their vibrant colors.  It is almost the feeling I get when painting and watching the picture develop under my brush.Washing_rugs_009 I know, wierd, but hey, ife is all about the simple pleasures!

Now, back to my Sunday paper and coffee on the porch.
