I do tend to run on, don’t I?

Romantic Country, Toasty Trees, and enough tiny trees to fill a country

Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), family, give away, holiday decor, how-to projects, I do tend to run on, don't I?, magazine pictures or articles, Sugarwings

Bleached_trees_036 I have news- my latest story is out!! Romantic Country is on the stands now, I picked up this issue at Borders.

I had dealt directly with the managing editor, Phyllis, for the whole article and didn’t even know that our fantastic blogging friend, Fifi was the guest editor!!!

If you don’t read her blog, you should get right over there, it is full of great how to’s for beautiful projects and sneak peeks into her lovely life.

Bleached_trees_037 I wish I had gotten to work with Fifi, she seems like a fun person and everyone who knows her says such wonderful things about her.

The issue is 100% gorgeous, and I am thrilled with the whole magazine.Bleached_trees_038

The titles to my story, that Fifi added, are cute as a button and add so much to the article, I wish I could take credit for them.Bleached_trees_039

Here is a tiny snippet from one of the photos by my good friend, the talented, Diane Guthrie.  Diane and I had worked together on an article for Romantic Homes a couple of years ago, and it was such a great time. She is a buddy and we get together regularly for coffee and hanging out.

Diane is the one on the ladder in the photo on this posting, and there are also photos from our collaboration for Romantic Homes on that post too. Ice_and_fudge_055

And now for more news- the winners of my drawing are:Holiday_home_184

Lori OlesVintage Flair (blogger winner)

Gail Sell (non blogger winner)

Gail has entered the Sweet Treats and Roses Recipe Swap that Beth and I are doing.  I know that Gail LOVES roses as much as I do, and can’t wait to see what she comes up with.  We still have a few spots left if you are interested in joining in too.

The two winners get to chose either a pair of earrings I made from vintage pieces, or a copy of The Crown and Tiara book (great ideas in it, and so pretty!!) First come, first serve, email me with your choices, I only have one book to send.

Remember, there is still the monthly drawing that you can win too.  I’ll draw that the beginning of Jan.Bleached_trees_021

We’ve had a fun morning here, yesterday was a Sugarwings sleepover night.

She helped cook breakfast.Bleached_trees_024

A favorite around here is "Egg in the Hole"

You cut a hole in bread with a glass, biscuit cutter- or even better, holiday cookie cutter, then drop an egg into the hole and fry it up together.Bleached_trees_029

Of course, the best part of egg in the hole is the little piece that you cut out, that you cook in butter too, then add jelly to.

Sugarwings liked the jelly covered Christmas tree shape, but notice that under her high chair, Twinkle is having the rest of the meal.  I think Twinks gets more food than the baby does at mealtimes.

Well, I never have to mop after I feed the baby.Bleached_trees_001

Sugarwings  was fascinated by the Christmas tree project I did too, but I had to keep her back from the bleach and the dye. She isn’t quite ready yet to be a hands on helper with these kind of things.Bleached_trees_002

I found the directions to this on Clarice‘s site.

I am crazy about the results!! Vintage  looking, beautiful bottle brush trees from brand new ugly ones!

First you soak them a few minutes in bleach and hot water, and rinse well.Bleached_trees_003

They already look great once they are bleached, but if you want you can dye them any color.

I used professional quality fiber reactive dyes, just because I had them, but am sure that Rit would be fine too.Bleached_trees_004

Of course, I should have changed clothes. I should have done this in my studio. But no, I was too excited and wanted to play with the colors, so did it in my kitchen sink.  There is a perfect, made for projects, sink in the studio.  But, heck, it is only dye, I bleached it out of the sink when I was done.  I think the sink might return to white again………Bleached_trees_006

I left the dye in the trees for about 10 minutes.Bleached_trees_008

And since I hate to let anything go to waste, I used the left over pink dye that was in the bowl to dye some shirts for my fairy grand baby. Bleached_trees_010

Once the dye is washed out, the trees are perfectly vintage looking!!

These trees are on sale at Michaels right now for 25% off, plus they are pretty cheap to start with, a big bag full of all sizes for $14.

Bleached_trees_016 My little helper was pretty impressed with the results too.

Thanks for the tip, Clarice!!

And thanks to Fifi and Phyllis for making my article look so good in Romantic Country!

And thanks to Sugarwings for making my morning such fun with her giggles and all her help.

And thanks to Beth for being such a fine administrator for our swap and for being such a buddy.

And thanks to Diane for being such a pal and for her great photos.

And thanks to everyone who participated in our "What do you LOVE about your Holiday Home?" party

I must be feeling very thankful today.  Just extra happy and exuberant, I guess.  I need someone to start playing the music that tells me it is time to shut up, like they have at acceptance speeches at the Oscars.

Edited note: These trees really are not my own idea, I saw it on other blogs!! here is another one with them, http://mamanjackjack.blogspot.com/

and here is a flickr site to see everyone’s!!  http://www.flickr.com/groups/563828@N24/

They are so fun to make, and so easy. Nothing like a simple project at this hectic time of year!

And speaking of passing along project ideas, Dona has used my lamp/coat rack idea and tweaked it into her own. Mine is featured in the Romantic Country magazine article that I wrote.

A List a mile long

Etsy Goodies, holiday decor, I do tend to run on, don't I?, paintings, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art

Esty_holiday_shop_015 I spent as much of yesterday as I could listing on Etsy!

Esty_holiday_shop_022

I got quite a few things up (at lower prices so they will disappear) until about mid-day. Then, I had a break and when I went to go back to listing more, the light was gone and I couldn’t get any more good photos.

Esty_holiday_shop_026 Natural light makes such a difference in a photo.  Like this one of a hand dyed vintage linen bag.  Isn’t it pretty how the sun comes in the window from the left side?

I try to never use flash in my pictures of my art work or shop listings.

This bag was done with fiber reactive dyes, I have a huge set of dye colors.  Before Sugarwings was born, we had a baby shower that was a tie dye party in the garden. Leandras_birth_041 Everyone brought something white and we dipped and dyed all after noon.  She has a whole wardrobe full of tie dye clothing, which is perfect for her since her mom is a hippie chick.

Our fairy grandbaby came home from the hospital in a tie dyed ensemble.

I get the dyes out and make something every once in a while. I like to dye my t-shirts that get a coffee stain on the front so I can still wear them.

Esty_holiday_shop_031

Today, I am taking all my photos first, then listing throughout the evening.  Its a Sugarwings sleepover night, so I can’t say how much I’ll get done…….Esty_holiday_shop_040

My afternoon break was from some shoppers who called and asked if they could come over to look around. They verified my guess that the reason my sales were down on Sunday was because it was too crowded.Esty_holiday_shop_044

All of them said that they just couldn’t see to shop and wanted to come back and look without the crowds.

I have more people coming in the next couple of days, but I did warn them it wasn’t set up as pretty as before. Actually, the studio kind of looks like a bar the day after New Year’s Eve.Esty_holiday_shop_047

At least my house is  still clean! But the baby isn’t here yet.  Give it a couple of hours and it will be looking quite lived in.

Which reminds me, I walked into my house from the studio during the home tour to find someone going through my kitchen drawers!!! She was telling her husband that real people did live in the house.  Well, what did she think it was??  So, I said, yep, this is MY house and she turned red and walked away. Really funny, I was laughing and thinking maybe I should have cleaned out drawers too??Esty_holiday_shop_056

After the whole thing was over, I saw that the shower curtain had been pulled back too.  I guess that means, I should have cleaned the shower.  Geez, who would have though that people would be peeking in places like that???? There were hosts around to keep an eye on that kind of thing.

Oh well, they got an eyeful of mess is what they got. I only cleaned what I thought was going to show!!  I hope they enjoyed the view of the pile of wash rags and an empty shampoo bottle on the floor of the shower.  Did I mention that there were tiny little, muddy dog foot prints on the shower floor?  Twinkle loves to play in there.Esty_holiday_shop_062

These photos I am showing are of what I did get listed yesterday.  Some have sold already!  thanks!

All are listed at lower prices than I have had on similar items before.

Jewelry_1 This is another photo of some of Beth’s contributions to the shop.Mother_of_pearl_vanity_set

I’m not sure how much of these she sold. I do remember ringing up the little pink angels.  The weekend really was pretty non-stop crazy.

Beth and I figured out what was weird about Sunday- with all those crowds, we didn’t get our giggle and gossip time.

Usually if you aren’t selling much, you are all alone at a sale, no crowds. So we hang out and talk and usually have so much fun, we don’t care about sales.  But with hordes of people walking through we never got to relax and kick back.  It was just weird. Esty_holiday_shop_075  But I would do it again, I enjoyed my weekend and sales weren’t bad.  And I am donating $500 of the sales to the charity that sponsored the open house tour. They are a free clinic that helps people with no health insurance, and that is a great cause to me.  When my son broke his elbow, they were great.  He has no insurance, much like many young people his age.Esty_holiday_shop_081

Now, I need to go Christmas shop from my pile of leftovers to find presents for my blog giveaways and for my family.

The rest I need to photograph before we go out of town, we have a trip to DC coming up this week. Esty_holiday_shop_085

So, I’m off to shop in my own studio, then list more things before the baby comes to play. Nothing gets done while she is here, except some tickling, hide and seek, and made up stories about fairies in the woods.

When she is older, I will write some down and illustrate them for her, so she will have books of her adventures in the forest as a fairy with sugar pink wings.

Not Bella-ed-Out Yet!

antiques/junking, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), Etsy Goodies, fairies, holiday decor, I do tend to run on, don't I?, Silver Bella, vintage paper/collage art

Coal_052 Did you think I was all bella-out? Nope, here is more!

Coal_051

I was only in one organized swap, silly silly silly me.

Take my advice, if you go to Silver Bella, sign up for as many swaps as you can.

You would not believe some of the gorgeous creations that were given in trade!

Coal_056 Coal_053

I was lucky enough to get into a few side swaps to, besides my ATCs.  Rebbecca, and Julie and …… and oh my, you know I am bad about this. All my notes and business cards are packed in the box with all the swaps and are all mixed up.

But that doesn’t mean I love all of them any less!  I am going to add hangers and make ornaments for a special table top tree, all Silver Bella themed with the ATCs.

Thanks, Bella Buddies!Coal_049

On the other hand, here is a mystery solved.  Remember the beautiful box full of gifts I got in the mail and didn’t know where from, was afraid I’d forgotten a swap or a giveaway?

Well, the gifter wrote to tell me, that is what it was, a gift.  How sweet and kind. She was trying to be a secret Santa, but didn’t want to worry me and make me rack my brain to figure out what I had forgotten!

Thanks, Kathryn!!!Coal_045

My Silver Bella tiara found a home in the bathroom cabinet on the doll head I bought on the trip to Omaha.

We named the little dolly "Bella Donna"

Coal_044

On the shelf near Bella Donna sits my swapty gift from Dede, who by the way, said she wanted to be the "Blotto Bella" and was a blast the whole weekend.

She let me pick ornaments, and I chose "Naughty Bella"

Which is a good name for me since I was bringing  a strange man into our room at 3 am.

Maybe I should tell the rest of that?  My roomie, Beth, went to bed early and I stayed up late with my new Bella Buds, Carol, Heather, the other Karla (yep, there were two there), and Stacey. and we giggled like school girls till way too late in Heather’s room.

Did you know that if your key card is in your pocket with your cell phone, it loses its magnetic abilities to open doors? So I was locked out. The room was in Beth’s name.  I couldn’t get a new key, but the manager said he’d let me in if I could describe the room and my luggage.

I told him he couldn’t wake up Beth, I was trying to sneak in! But it was the only way, he insisted.

So, I described my stuff as all the bags on the floor overflowing with purchases from Vendor Night,  supplies for classes, all the stuff from the antique mall I’d gotten, and all the swaps, stacked and piled up on the floor from the TV cabinet to the  front door, so that you could barely get in the room.  He stepped inside, took one look and realized it had to be my room. Then, I promptly tripped over a paper bag and made a lot of noise, but Beth still slept through it.

Coal_028 I am continuing to burn the midnight oil getting ready for my sale in two weeks. I’ve been up till 4 am the last two nights.Coal_054

I glittered all these Ballerinas that I bought at Vendor Night and added butterfly wings that I got there too.

They are hung on a Bethany Lowe tree I picked up on the trip.Coal_008

Sometime around 2am I was making these cones. The base of them is a 90% off clearance Tussie Mussie that I ripped all the tacky things off of and embellished myself with vintagey stuff.Coal_011

Most of the embellishments were from our trip too. Either leftovers from class, goodies from Vendor night, or from the shopping along the way.Coal_012  Beth was so nice to me on the shopping part of the trip. I don’t get out to junk as much as she does, so she was calling it my "Pity Trip" and giving me first choice on all the goods!

Look at the pretty ribbon on this one. it is from Rebecca’s class.  Did she just get some old seam binding wet and crumple it, do you think?

Wish I could have gotten more than 3 of these cones for 50 cents each, they were great to work with.Coal_040

One more purchase from our drive up to Omaha. I bought another Bethany Lowe tree for my living room.

I’m going with an all white theme, for Christmas in that room. Well ivory and cream really.  Multi whites.  I’ll show more during our

What do you LOVE about your holiday home? party Hhbutton2

Coal_003I’ve been so busy Bella-ing, redoing the blog (well Sadie Olive did all the actual work, but it took up a lot of my time too) and then getting ready for the upcoming sale at my home, I haven’t done much Etsy listing.

I did list this, the background is an invoice from Acme Coal Mining. I loved that 1917 paper!  I wondered if Santa got his coal there.

I’m sure that is where Wiley Coyote and Bugs Bunny did, every exploding device or weird thing that they bought was from Acme.

(this sold to Louisa who had this wallpaper in her home growing up! I sent her all the scraps I had of it so she could make something too)Coal_058

Now, I am going to be good, stop running on, and go list something else on Etsy.  I am crazy about this old wallpaper too. I had made a banner from it also and that sold to Bethany.  And that is all I had of this wallpaper. It is so rich and deluxe, but in small doses, I can’t quite picture it filling a room.

A winner! Plus some lightening up turns into a giant snowball

Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), fairies, give away, Hand Painted Furniture, I do tend to run on, don't I?, magazine pictures or articles

Sissy_swap_party_010 Thanks for all your kind comments the last few days!  It was good to hear from people I didn’t know were out there, and also from friends I hear from regularly.

I wish I was at Sissy’s house and I could use her cool hand made witch’s hat to draw the name from for the prize!Sissy_swap_party_008

Actually, I just wish I was at Sissy’s house anyway, because I miss her.

Its a fun place to visit, she has such cool stuff at her fairy tale cottage, like these old witchy boots.Sissy_swap_party_017

And a real cauldron to make up some Halloween potions.Sissy_swap_party_012

I always borrow the witchy hat when I visit her.  I wonder what that says about my personality, that I am so comfortable looking like a witch?

Well, no pretty Halloween Witch hat to draw a name from, but I was able to randomly select a name without it, even though it wasn’t as much fun that way.

The winner is:

DENISE DUNLAVEY

I have your address from past purchases, Denise, so I will mail out your Foof of Life book and rose painted bookmark.

Thanks again to everyone for entering!

All of those comments were also entered into my October giveaway and you can keep entering until the end of the month.

Grate_001

Besides taking care of Sugarwings and walking to the park with her in her little pink convertible, my week has been full of boring details.

Like touching up paint around the house. uck.  But it had to be done before the Holiday Home Tour.Grate_002

And it does make a difference.

I touched up all the dings on the walls throughout the house, plus this grate in my dining room floor.Grate_003

While I was at it, I trashed the dining room rug, since Twinkle thinks it made a better toilet and chew toy than a floor covering.

Taking out the black flowered rug made the rest of the things in the room off kilter a bit, so I repainted the bench, slightly.Dining_room_002

Here it is a year ago (It was white before this, pink before that, and maple when I got it from my mom’s estate 5 years ago)Dining_room_006

This is the room last spring.Grate_008 (before the rug was Twinklized)

This is the lighter version of the bench.

I’d like to get a new rug, in a sisal maybe? But Twinks worries me with her bad puppy habits for now. I’d be better off with the scrubbable, bleachable tile until she learns.Grate_005

My great grandmother made this table cloth!

We didn’t realize it, this one and some others were in the linen closet at my mom’s home, and when she died, we were getting things ready for an auction and also dividing up between family members.

One job I had was to go through all the video tapes. While I was looking at a tape of my Great Aunt Caroline’s visit to my mom’s, someone else was going through linens, and we both noticed that on the tape, Caroline was giving mom these linens and telling stories about them.  We wouldn’t have known that it was made by my great grandmother if we hadn’t looked through all the videos.Grate_007

Lightening up the dining room yesterday also meant redoing the center piece.  I have had some fallish colors out for the last couple of weeks, and was ready for a change. This is still autumn themed, but has a lighter quality to it.

My_house_from_the_photo_shoot My rooms change a lot. Here is the dining room about 3 years ago in a photo taken for Paint Magic magazine (taken by Bill Mathews, styled by Gloria Gale).

Grate_010 I took the stained glass lamp from the dining room and moved it upstairs to the library.

That room still needs a spiffing up, it is rather blah.  But I will worry about that when I get out my holiday decor.Grate_011

I also had to repaint a bed this week.  Didn’t want to.

But Ry’s back has been bothering him and it dawned on me that there was a really good mattress in the guest room that we should switch out with him for his older one.

But then, of course, the new mattress didn’t fit the old frame, yet another snowball effect like taking the rug out of the dining room.  You change one little thing and all of a sudden, you have a chain reaction of things that need changing.

Grate_012 So, I repainted Ryan’s oak bed to go into the guest room. It looked a bit manly, but I don’t think that is a problem anymore.

Grate_016 While I was out in the driveway painting the bed, I decided to spray paint this little sewing stand (Goodwill -$5!) pink.

And that just about sums up how my days go. One thing leads to another and never seem to do what I planned.

Today, I am not babysitting, the house is put back together, and I have a casserole ready to go for dinner. I am going to get those signs painted that I mentioned last week!

ps- lots of nice people have tagged me for some fun things, I’ll get to those soon too

TWO HUNDRED posts!

celebrations, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), Etsy Goodies, fairies, family, give away, I do tend to run on, don't I?, Sugarwings, swaps, vintage paper/collage art

200_003 Today is my 200th post! Wow, who knew when I started doing this I would LOVE blogging so much and have such a great time with it?

Before I started writing a blog, I didn’t even really read them. I didn’t know the wealth of friendship, entertainment, and creativity out there.

If I had, I would have come up with a more creative name, or at least I’d like to think that!  I would have at least used "Karkie" instead of "Karla", that is what my family calls me.  My business name was "Comfort and Joy" that might have been better.  Oh well, too hard to change at this point!!

Maybe I’ll list 200 reasons why I love writing my blog?! I am known for long and rambling posts….

Well, here are a few at least-

First_tea_party_031_2 I’ve met the most generous and fun people.  Like the blogger friend who sent little Sugarwings this dress as a gift, but doesn’t want me to tell anyone who she is.

I always say that bloggers are the most generous souls I’ve ever met.

200

I’ve gotten to know some other artists, whose works I’d never have seen, like my friend, Bethany who drew this for her 200th post and let me "borrow" it because I just thought it was the cutest sketch ever.

Challenge_2

I get to have fun with my Sis, by she and I participating in challenges and swaps together.

Beachy is having a challenge now to use an old photo and show what you have done. This is Sissy’s result!! Wow!!Crystals_001

Here is mine, from the same vintage photo.  Not as fanciful as Sis’s, but what could be, hers is so wonderfully fun!

I combined the challenge with making a card for Carole who is a kind hearted blogging friend who is having a rough time with her back surgery.

Mary Lou is gathering up cards to send to Carole. See, didn’t I say that bloggers were giving people?Ren_faire_sissy

I’ve shown this photo before, it is of my Sissy. Can you see why her challenge photo turned into a flock of fairies? She IS a fairy. Sugarwings takes after her Great Aunt Sissy.

I love that my blog keeps me in touch with my family and friends.  I live far away from most of them and this just makes me feel a bit more connected. Maybe they can feel like they are more of a part of my life when they see Sugarwings and the rest of us and read about what we are up to.

Lily_036 And of course, I have been able to sell my work from the blog, and connect it to my Etsy Shop, which I’d never even heard of before seeing it pop up on so many other blogs.

Now, Phyllis will be having a virtual craft show, yet another fun way to meet more bloggers and do some mingling and shopping. Artwork_for_cards_013

I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to show some of my artwork too. What artist doesn’t need a venue to be seen in? Cards_005

And I have been encourage and inspired to try different things and branch out by other bloggers and the things I see them do.

Beth_sept_010 My buddy, Beth and I like to make projects together and gossip about what we’ve read and who is doing what.  We feel like these blogs we read are written by neighbors and friends.  Each one is like getting a post card full of news from a pal.

(by the way- there is a FLEA MARKET on Beth’s site right now, time for more shopping!)

Luois_003_2 Also, I get to share my experiences and talk about where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing.

Like the party I went to on Saturday. An artist friend,Louis Copt, has "CoptOberFest" every fall at his home.Luois_004

Louis and Phyllis have the coolest, artiest home ever and I just feel like I HAVE to have a place to show photos of it!  How many people do you know that build a kitchen around a wood fired pizza oven?Luois_008

This is in Louis’ studio, with his Kansas landscapes on the walls behind Jen and Diane (more art friends).Luois_011

Louis doesn’t just paint Kansas, he travels the world and does scenes from all over, he has taken groups on painting tours of France and Italy through the local art center. Someday, I hope to join one, but it will take a while to save up for it!

Artwork_for_cards_026_2 I took a class from Louis, and this is one of the paintings I did in it.

Which brings me to another reason I love blogging- tea parties!! Wasn’t Karis tea party fun?  And I was so thrilled that I had so many ‘guests’ at my Romantic Country publication celebration, showing what they LOVED about their own homes.

I look forward to the "What do you Love about your Holiday Home" party. It will be on Wednesday Dec. 12th. PLEASE NOTE, THAT THIS IS A CHANGE- TOO MANY PEOPLE DON’T HAVE THEIR HOMES READY BY THE 5TH AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED!

I hope to meet many more new friends at that party.  I hope you can all attend and tell your friends to come too.

Luois_016 I always am inspired by the generosity of bloggers, and want to thank Angelina’s cards for featuring me in her hightlighted artist segment.

And have I mentioned swaps and giveaways yet?? How fun are those? I just won these pretties from Dena,First_tea_party_016  and will have tea party with my fairy grand baby with them soon.

Luois_021I also love having giveaways myself.  For my 200th post, all comments on #199  and today’s 200th will be entered to win this book and hand made book mark.

I will announce the winner on Wed. so everyone has time to enter.

Plus all comments through out the month are entered into my monthly drawing.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to look at my pictures and read my ramblings and to the people who have taken the time to leave me over 3,500 comments!  I try to answer each and everyone, but sometimes, for some weird reason, Typepad kicks the responses back to me, and the emails don’t go through. If you didn’t hear an answer from me, it wasn’t because I didn’t try.

Thanks again!

A lucky Fairy Find, Sugarwings goes to her first estate sale, and Ryan gets a date!

antiques/junking, collections, fairies, I do tend to run on, don't I?, paintings

Book_wall_041 It has been a long, long, hectic week, with working on the living room, helping out extra days with the baby, since her dad is hurt, and 2 days of jury duty selection.

Due to the nature of the criminal case, I was a wreck after sitting through the first day of the selection process, even though I wasn’t picked. I had to force myself to go back a second day,and it went better. Plus there was an hour and half lunch break and I went shopping! Finding a pile of pretty junk CHEAP always cheers me up!Book_wall_043_2

This pink frothy prom dress (with a broken zipper, but somehow I don’t think this granny will be wearing it anyway) was only $5!  The earrings above were 50 cents a pair and the lovely rose book was $2, so was the white bird.  Which will go into my newly decluttered living room to restart the cluttering up process!S_bella_015

Part of my de-cluttering was to take this hand painted ceiling tin piece out of the room.S_bella_016

I still like it, the flowers are just too red for the new look.

I thought I’d show this piece again, because the last time I did, was on the day of my lowest ever  number of views on this blog. Only 4 hits that day.  So chances are, no one has seen it! S_bella_017_2

It is so nice to know I am not writing just to myself and there are actually people out there now. Not just readers, friends.

Bethany listened to me the other night when I was really down and upset about the creepy guy at court on Tuesday and how shaken up I was by the few details I had heard about the accusations against him.S_bella_012

Today, Tamy sent me this kind card and these little red hearts as a thank you for hosting the party last month.

That’s just two examples in the last couple of days of the generosity I have seen in the blog world. I am now nearing my 200th post and 80,000 hits. During that time, I have seen countless acts of generosity and friendship from readers and bloggers both.

That is why I am planning on giving away a gift on my 200th posting.  Come by to visit that day and enter the drawing!S_bella_014

Another generous blog friend, who actually has been a great friend for years, is Beth. After this tough week, I took yesterday off to go and hang out with her. When I got there, this china bouquet wall pocket was waiting for me!

It is so pretty, I can’t decide where to hang it. Right now, I am just enjoying having it laying out where I can admire it. Shoot, I almost feel like sleeping with it under my pillow, it is so wonderful! (she thought it was ugly, but knew I’d love it)S_bella_002_2

I packed up my supplies to make ATC cards for my Silver Bella swap.  S_bella_019

I loved this old photo, and copied it thinking she’d look lovely in a German foil crown that I got from Speckled Egg (another Bella- she has a great shop).S_bella_cards_002_2

Beth had given me the gray floral wallpaper, and I thought it was fitting for the "silver" background of the Silver Bella cards.S_bella_004

I took her some wallpaper too.S_bella_003

We are both totally addicted to the stuff, and share in each other’s finds.  Speaking of—- LOOK AT THIS!!!!

Fairy wallpaper!!!!S_bella_018

These cards aren’t quite done yet, I’ll be adding some of the Martha Stewart White Gold glitter to the outlines of the background flowers.

These took forever, lots of steps.  I should have just painted something instead, it would have been quicker, and I doubt anyone will know how complicated these were to make.

There are hand drawn metallic swirls in the background of the paper, and the lady’s face has been tinted with pastels, then her dress is outlined in glitter ink, and two different metallic two-toned paints were used on her dress.  It might have taken a while, but we had fun, Beth was making Christmas tags and we were snacking and laughing all day. S_bella_008

I took another day off today too! I figured after court, I deserved it.  I took my fairy grand baby to her very first estate sale and it was a good one.S_bella_007_3

Three boxes of old hats and millinery flowers for $3 or $5 a box!S_bella_009

There were some, nice big roses in the box too.S_bella_011

Some sewing supplies, that I bought mostly because I found what I thought was a dream come true in the box–

A BOX OF PREMADE BOBBINS!!!!!!!!!!!

Juggling a baby and three boxes of hats, made it kind of hard to look inside the bobbin box, and I figured I’d use the seam binding and buttons any way, so I bought it without opening it.S_bella_006_3

Sadly, it was just a bobbin holder, don’t you think the picture on the box is misleading??? And why don’t they sell filled bobbins? Heck, you don’t have to thread your own spools, why do you have to thread your own bobbins???

The rest of the day off was spent in watching a great Zombie movie, 28 Weeks later. That first zombie scene in it is one of the scariest I have ever seen. And I am a huge Zombie fan.  Eharmony_006_2 I used to make Cherry cobbler to eat during these movies and call it zombie guts, but my son, Ryan went on a diet and lost 100 pounds and now he won’t eat cobbler with his mom any more.

Great news! A girl asked my shy son Ryan for his phone number and he is going out with her! I am thrilled to see him get out of the house and meet some one. All he does is work and work out and play video games (or watch horror movies with mom).

I’ve done it again, ran on and on.  Remember- every comment enters the monthly drawing. Thanks!

Step by Steps and a peek into the crazy mind of a serial redecorator

Etsy Goodies, fairies, how to's, how-to projects, I do tend to run on, don't I?, magazine pictures or articles, Sugarwings, vintage paper/collage art

Butterfly_baby_006 The slipcovers are done!  And in use, you can see them here under my little fairy grand baby.  Her dad has dislocated his elbow -ouch- and it looks like I will be seeing a lot of her this week.  He is in bad shape, and can’t use his arm, so he can’t pick up his baby.  I’ll be helping out till he is better.

We are hoping rest will do the trick, the poor guy has no health insurance and can’t afford time off work, or doctor bills.

Since I know I will be busy with the baby this week, I kicked it into over drive to finish the slipcovers and the wall behind the couch. Book_wall_002

I decided to use a mix of books for a varied look on the wall. First I removed all these cool illustrations to use for projects or to sell on Etsy for someone else to use.  Aren’t they beautiful???Book_wall_003

I have 2 French books in different sizes, and one slightly more aged looking plus a book about roses with black and white illustrations.

Book_wall_001 I was so pleased to see how easily the textured wallpaper came down.  Just a bit of peeling and patience and it was done.Book_wall_019

If you know me at all, you know that I don’t waste anything. The wallpaper I pulled down was cut up into craftable sizes and saved for future projects. Some of it was used already to wrap up some Etsy purchases tonight. It made really cute wrapping paper.Book_wall_004_2 Book_wall_013

I used all three books, with the pages turned upside down, sideways, all topsy turvey, with no real pattern or plan.

Wallpaper paste was rolled onto the wall and I added the pages to the glued wall, then rolled over the top again with glue.

The first part of the wall was dry by the time I finished the last part, so I started right away on the metallic glazes.Book_wall_014 Gold, bronze and umber glazes all went into the pan together.Book_wall_006

To apply, all three were used on the rag at the same time.Book_wall_007

It gets glopped on with the rag.Book_wall_008

When you first start to smear it around, you think, "oh no, what have I done???"Book_wall_009

But just a little blending and it starts to look good.Book_wall_012

I wish you could see the metallic sheen this has, it is a nice effect, but doesn’t show up well in the photos.

I like the aged colors of the paper and the golden sheen over the top kind of blends the papers all together.  The only color on the wall is this one page with the tiny word "Paris" in red.Book_wall_017

Ta da!  New slipcovers in one afternoon (it helps to not measure or be too picky, just go for it!) and a wall stripped of its old wallpaper and re-papered in vintage book pages in about 3-4 hours the next day.

Book_wall_016

One thing I really like about the slipcovers, besides the fact that they are washable and I have a houseful of dogs and a baby- is that I made the backs of the pillows all out of velvet.  When you lay on the couch, it will feel good to flip the pillows over to the soft side to get comfy.

Living_room_002

This is what I started with, and was ready for something more neutral.

(I found this brand new couch at a sale for $285!)New_couch_002_2

I’d used dark slipcovers for last winter, but it was way too much color for me and I got tired of it fast.Img061

And before that, we had this couch that I gave to my son when he got his own place. He stripped off all the pillows and the cover that I made for it and likes it plain tan velvet.

Img060

Here is another version of that sofa.

Both of these photos were used in magazine shoots and were taken by Bill Mathews and styled by Gloria Gale.Img062

And way way before that, we had this look. This was in Country Almanac, and was done by Bill and Gloria too.

And don’t ask me how long I will keep the new look I did tonight. Chances aren’t good that it will last!!!

Don’t forget about the giveaway, leave a comment to enter, I have two drawings this month!!

Making more space and making money stretch

antiques/junking, Chandeliers, fairies, flowers, give away, holiday decor, I do tend to run on, don't I?, magazine pictures or articles, paintings, vintage paper/collage art

Office_redo_007 I have been hearing that Romantic Country has been hard to find for a lot of people.  I’ve seen that with these Harris Publications before. They have great magazines and people love them, but it takes some searching to find them sometimes.

So, today, I am mailing a copy to my sweet and tiny little mother-in-law out in Utah and my genteel and gracious great aunt down in Florida (who is turning 100!!).   I made them each a book mark with their initials.  I used some pretty scrap booking paper and brass charms but didn’t delve into my stash of vintage wallpapers and old ribbons. I knew they would just think it was old stuff and would probably appreciate the new papers more.  Office_redo_001

I redid the little corner of my studio that I call my office this week.

The rug is a linoleum remnant I painted for a magazine article "how to" story a couple of years ago. I switched from a larger table to this petite one and now the rug shows more.  I’d almost forgotten it was there.  Office_redo_004

I use doors that are hinged together to make the partition that creates the space, and even though the doors have windows, the spot is dark.  So I repainted the big hutch from black to pale, icy blue, and added another chandelier.

The table lamp is from last weekend’s garage sailing, $2.50- with the shade!!Office_redo_005

Its hard for me to make an office a pretty spot, too many functional things, electronics, papers, BILLS, that I need to keep out.

Of course, the piles of Etsy stuff on the little blue desk doesn’t help the clutter, does it?Office_redo_010

I might have mentioned a couple (or a thousand) times that I like fairies.  I make my own from old dolls, or paint them, or transform vintage photographs into little fairy kids, but I also buy store bought ones.Office_redo_011

TJ Maxx has these sparkly babes in with their Christmas decor for $5 each. I added these warm colored ones to my fall centerpiece in the dining room.

The velvet rose is from a bundle of the quarter ones I got at a garage sale, I glued it and some moss into a creamer from another garage sale that was only 15 cents because it was chipped.  Office_redo_023

My house doesn’t usually have fall colors. but I wanted to do something to celebrate the season and still be true to my own palette and style.

Fresh flowers are always welcome here. These are from last MONDAY at my local grocery store’s $1.99 clearance bin.

A vintage table cloth with roses in autumn colors, that Beth was selling for $3, and just gave to me instead, a basket from garage sales last week for 50cents, some of the vines and flowers (with lots of sparkle to them) from garage sales for a quarter a stem,  and an 80% off after Christmas spray of glittered fruits from Hobby Lobby are part of the display.Office_redo_024

I also added a gold carnival glass dish that was my husband’s grandmother’s and filled it with china roses that I collect for mosaic projects. Oh, and a bag of white pumpkins for $2, and a beaded pumpkin for $1.  All of this, for what it normally costs to buy a flower arrangement!Office_redo_012

Even though the flowers from last week’s sale bin are still thriving, I bought a dozen roses for $1.99 yesterday.  Look at the deep reds and the wonderful striping of greens and yellows!! Office_redo_014

The grocery store had a pot of white hydrangeas for $1.99 too. I hope to plant it outside as soon as we get a good break in the weather.

But for now, the pot looks good on my studio porch with the fall display there.Office_redo_015

I might have saved a ton on flowers, but I went slightly overboard at TJMaxx on the fairies.Office_redo_016

I bought one in every color they had for the baby’s room.Office_redo_018

Even though I am decorating for the Christmas Parade of Homes, I don’t think these will come down after the holidays, they look like fairies that should live here year round to me.

Office_redo_022

One more bargain, before I go make things. I’d hate to only have 2 book marks and a rearranged room to be all I accomplish today.

My friend was having a yard sale and I bought this desk from her for $30. If I had bought it from a stranger, I would have offered $25, but very politely, I am never pushy or rude when I wheel and deal!

This attic room is in its beginning stages, you don’t want to see the rest of it yet.

Tags_040 And one more "one more thing" this is what I sent to Priscilla, who won the Sept. giveaway.Tags_043

The tag is one that I made by cutting up my Romantic Country party invitation.  I thought it looked fitting for her, as a Flea Market Queen.

I added her initial and a charm that I had made with old papers.Tags_044

The charm can be worn as a pendant if she’d like.

I hope she enjoys her throne.

Please leave a comment to enter the Oct. giveaway. Maybe I will keep it as the Sept. one was, custom fit to the winner?

Beth, Birdies, Bertie, and a bit of weirdness

Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), Etsy Goodies, how to's, I do tend to run on, don't I?, I've been tagged, paintings, vintage paper/collage art

Pink_convertabel_001 Yesterday was a Sugarwings Day.  She is still feeling cuddly and quiet from her flu bug, so she wanted just to be held or to be pushed in her new ($3 from a garage sale) car.

Pink_convertabel_004 While she was napping, I decided to surprise her by making her new car  a bit more fitting for someone as special as she is.

I primed it, spray painted it pink, then dumped two vials of glitter all over the wet paint and covered that with a spray of clear coat.

I wish the glitter showed in the photo, because it really shines in the sun.  Sugarwings might need some sunglasses when she rides in her pink convertible.

By the way, this is what I am using as a stroller. We go for long walks up and down the sidewalks and to the park in it.  So much more interesting than most strollers, and the handles come off so I can put it in my car if we go somewhere.Beth_sept_007

Today was a Beth day.  I went to her house and we crafted the afternoon away. Why is it so much more fun to dig through someone else’s bags and boxes of supplies than your own?

We both had new goods to work with, she’d gotten a tin full of broken jewelry at an estate sale and I had a stack of some of the prettiest paper ever from Heather.  She and I did a mini swap of vintage wall papers.Beth_sept_009

This blue rose paper is one from Heather and the rhinestone posy shaped button is from Beth’s tin of sparkly bits and pieces.Beth_sept_010

Beth also had a drawer full of different wooden shapes, and she shared this birdie with me.  And yep, the eye is from her stash of sparklies too. Plus- she gave me a baggie full of them to take home!

Beth_sept_011

Beth had a page of Victorian bird pictures she had reduced and copied, so I was full speed into the bird theme today. I also was trying out her "Stickles" and decided that it was a product I won’t be able to do with out.Beth_sept_013

I used the burgundy Stickles ( a brand of glitter glue that has a very fine glitter in it, comes in many colors, and flows easliy from the bottle) to outline some of the flowers in the old wallpaper (from Heather) and the oval cut out of the bird (from Beth).

I also drew extra vines, leaves, and swirls with Gelly Roll Stardust pens.  Another product that will always be on my desk!

The Stardust pens are what I used to outline flowers and leaves, then smudge it slightly for a subtle glittery look. (A trick I learned from Sissy)Beth_sept_007_2

Another new favorite is this genuine sliver glitter from Heather.  She sells it in her shop and you HAVE to try it. Especially if you use it with yet ANOTHER  new favorite of mine- a ball point pen that has glue instead of ink! I’d seen glue pens before, but these (from Michaels) have such a fine line and great control of where the glue goes, I just am crazy about them.

So do you have your shopping list of must haves for collage and scrap booking??

1. Stardust Gelly Roll pens (clear is the BEST)

2. Stickles

3. Ball point pen with glue instead of ink

4. Genuine silver dust glitter from Heather at Pretty Petals

These are my new "Can’t do with out ’ems" when I need to make something sparkle. And I always need to make stuff sparkle!

Beth_sept_002 Here is what Beth made today.  We might have gotten more done if we weren’t laughing so hard all day. For some reason, every sentence seemed to strike a funny bone.

Not a bad way to spend a day, laughing and gluing glitter on vintage wallpaper. Oh- and going out to lunch at Pei-Wei (a chain owned by PF Chang and just as good but half the price!)

Beth_sept_004

Here is more of what Beth made today, she isn’t quite done with them, but I took the picture anyway, they look good to me.

Also, I have been tagged by Jennifer (Queen of the Ravens) to list 7 weird things about myself.  Well, I’ve played this game before, twice, but I think I have plenty of weird to spare. Here are a couple at least.

1- This is embarrassing but true, and I did go back to finish later and jeez, I don’t know why I’d even tell anyone this- but I am a high school drop out.  I’m not stupid, I was an A student, I wasn’t a loser or a druggie or anything like that, it was just family difficulties and I was a tad bit homeless at the time.

2- I am a serial renovator. I can’t stop.  When we bought this old farmhouse, it was 800 sq feet. Img055  It is now almost 5,000.  Front_of_the_house_007 We just add and add and add.

3- I am a serial painter too.  My living room gets repainted at least twice a year.  Maybe more.  Maybe twice a week if I feel like I need to. When I had an antique booth, I’d paint it every couple of months. Other rooms last longer in their colors, the living room seems to be my main target.

4- I sing and make up rhymes all day long and am completely tone deaf, but I don’t let that stop me.  Sugarwings and the dorkies think it is pretty cool but the rest of the world finds me irritating.Berta_and_the_fairies_001

5- I keep a file of co-incidences. Such as two days after this puppy, Bertie, died, I made a tie dye tee shirt that was supposed to be a butterfly, but it turned out to look like her portraitBertas_ghost_matt_nicole_and_lee_le.

Anytime something odd or cute or coincidental happens, I make a note of it.  I call it my Co-Inky Dinks  and Odd Occurances file.

Yorkie_sky Like this picture of the sky over my cottage the day Sugarwings was born- this cloud is shaped like Sparkle, my dorky!!!

5- I have developed an addiction to vintage wallpaper.Wallpaper_packs_001

A serious, dangerous addiction that can’t be stopped.

6- I once had a mural job that paid me $2,000 in one day.  I paint fast, and usually try to make the job last longer so the person who hired me doesn’t feel like he got a bad deal.  But sometimes, I can’t help myself, I zip through the work so fast, I get done too early.  I’ve painted a 20′ x 60′ mural in 2 days, thats probably my speed record.  Img058

Here is are a couple photos of part of it, its a big ‘un.

7- I once broke my back. I fell off (was not thrown, that would be a better story) a pony –not a horse –  a pony we bought from a church camp. A kid’s pony.  I just was careless, slid off (it wasn’t very far to the ground either) and landed wrong. I broke 2 vertebrae and was in bad shape for years.  Lots of surgeries, etc.  I do exercises and keep limber or the arthritis in my back will cripple me up again.

8- bonus weird item- I don’t embarrass! (and I don’t know when to shut up)  You can tell by the fact that I wrote all of this!!!!

I will do the drawing for September’s prize Sunday night.  Thanks everyone for leaving comments, I appreciate it.  Also, I am taking suggestions for October’s prize.

What do you LOVE about your Home?? And a kitchen evolution.

What do I LOVE about my home?

It makes me smile to have an eclectic mix and a never ending, always changing menagerie of possessions.  To find bargains at thrifts, garage sales, auctions, in dumpsters, places where I can spy a diamond in the rough.

This photo of my gazebo was in Victorian Country a few years ago and you can see from it, that I like to use pieces that go together, but that aren’t matching sets.  Img052

Right now, some rooms from my home are in Romantic Country along with a short article I have written.

Here is the kitchen scanned from the  magazine.

I like to redecorate, but they have gone even further and completely renovated and given me a mirror image of my actual space!  How fun is that??  Perfect for me, I  love changes and with this one, I didn’t have to do a thing!! Img051_2

To give you an idea of some of the changes my kitchen has been through, here are some older magazine shots. These have all been taken by Bill Mathews and styled by Gloria Gale for Harris Publications (Country Victorian and Country Almanac).

Kitchen

This one was taken by Diane Guthrie for a local magazine. She took this after we replaced the original farm house cabinets with new ones my son custom built for us.Kitchen_001

I repainted a bit since then, this is the latest incarnation.Kitchen_002_2

Home_love_014 And from the other angle.

When we remodeled, I saved money by repainting my old fridge to match the cabinets, in the same paint and glaze I used on them (oil based french vanilla color with a mocha glaze)Home_love_010

One small addition to the kitchen was made this weekend, I found a toy stove/fridge for Sugarwings at a garage sale for $1.  Now she can help me fix dinner.

If you are new to my blog, (as I know a lot of the party crowd is), you’ll see I tend to run on and on and my posts can be long winded.

I’m afraid this one will be a record breaker by the time I add all the party invitations to other blogs!

I look forward to visiting each and every one of the listed parties, and hope everyone else enjoys mingling and party hopping too.

I’ll check throughout the day and add links as I receive them.  If you don’t see yourself listed, please email me and let me know I have missed you!

Thank you all so much for joining in this party today! I’ve had a wonderful time mingling, meeting new friends, and seeing the creative and loving touches you have added to your homes.

I think that this subject is a meaningful one for many of us and I have been asked to host more parties like this in the future.  How about a "What do you LOVE about your Holiday Home?" Mid December?

Sugarwings and I are all partied out at this point and we need to call it a night!
