Acorn nests

mushrooms

SavingPNG

How cute are these?

SavingPNG

I found shaggy acorn caps at the dog park and filled my pockets with them.  As soon as I got home (I was excited!) I filled them with a pinch of moss and a tiny egg.

SavingPNG

They are scattered around my booth for spring, but I especially like them with the mushroom display.
SavingPNG

They add a woodsy touch.

The chickens made some friends and my mushrooms went to a new home

celebrations, cottage, Food and Drink, mushrooms

SavingPNG

My friend, Mindy, came by to purchase some mushrooms for her online shop, Myrtle and Mo.

SavingPNG

Since I believe that most occasions should be parties whenever possible, I told her to bring the kids with her for a spooky cocoa party.

SavingPNG

Instead of having the inventory packed up in the studio, I used it as a centerpiece, and Sugarwings set the table with our Halloween themed cups and teapot.

SavingPNG

We were ready to welcome a couple of adorable guests.

IMG_4178

Dessert was scary cherry pies.

SavingPNG

Their mom was a good sport about all of the sweet treats before dinner time.  We also had fruit skewered onto witch leg picks, and a cauldron full of guacamole to dip pretzels in.  So, maybe that counter acted some of the decadence.

IMG_4168

The tarts were in silicone teacups made to bake in, lined with crust, cherry pie filling, then topped with a circle of pie dough that I cut faces into with a knife.  I added noses and eyebrows from the trimmings.

SavingPNG

But the big hit of the party was the henhouse.

SavingPNG

The ladies are some of the sweetest chickens we have ever had, and seemed happy with the attention.

SavingPNG

There was plenty of snuggles to go around, and those birds got lots of attention.

SavingPNG

Mindy went home with kids filled up with sweets, tired from chasing chickens, and a nice selection of mushrooms.

If you are one of the people who have been asking me to list schroomies in my poor, neglected boutique to sell online, uhm, you might be better off checking out my pal’s store.  I do not seem to be filling that shop up, am I?

It’s still open, and I’m paying fees for it, although I  sure haven’t used it much this year.   But Mindy has a full shop, with a few dozen mushrooms along with her fantastic vintage goods.

You can find her (and my velvet mushie creations) here:

100 mushies, but more to go

drawing, mushrooms

SavingPNG

I might have made a couple mushrooms. And the best part was playing with them afterward and arranging them on the shelves.

SavingPNG

My goal was to have at least 100 completed, and there were already about 20 set up at my booth in Good Juju.

SavingPNG

It took a few weeks of off and on crafting, because I felt like I wasn’t getting very many full days in the studio.

SavingPNG

My friends meet weekly for an afternoon mosaic group, which is an ideal time to chat with buddies and work on small projects like these.

SavingPNG

I often have other commitments on the Fridays the group gathers, so I got maybe 3 play dates to bring schroomies to there.

SavingPNG

Then I was able to scoop out a few days of studio time.

SavingPNG

Once I can set aside big chunks of a day, a lot can happen, quickly!

SavingPNG

Zap, 80 little mushrooms in a variety of colors, done and ready to go.

SavingPNG

I even had time to play around with some new techniques  for the gills.

SavingPNG

At this point, this style takes a bit longer for me, so I didn’t create many this way.  I needed to get my goal met for a couple of orders.  Once I have done a few of these honey comb gills, I think I’ll get quicker at it and can make more this way.

SavingPNG

I will be sitting down to craft another 25-30 or so, because out of the collection I have finished, quite a few sold already and I’m saving the Poison Toadstools (black or orange, some purple or acid green) for my own Halloween display.  Apparently, I did not set my goal high enough, but the order of 60 isn’t due til September, so I can look forward to more fun mushie days in the studio.

Lucky finds

You can tell when it’s time for the season to change by the color of my mushrooms. D0FAC37E-E4B0-488C-A0CA-939EFFBD30B3

When I found an extremely tattered, vintage dress in this burnt velvet, all I could think was Halloween Mushrooms! And I might have slightly shrieked that out loud at the estate sale.

5FBA8CE7-0397-4C63-99A6-022810C918E6

There might have been some exclamations of delight when I found this tree too.  I kinda love it.

A8200898-4014-4790-88EF-62D72B2ACF40

Another beyond wonderful find?  A box of geodes for a buck.  Sugarwings was in charge of whacking them with a hammer so I could have chunks of sparkly rocks to add to the base of my schroomies.

Ahhhh- just what they needed.

Due to my trip out east, I missed two weekends of garage sales.  We arrived home in the middle of a major heat wave, so there went another weekend of yard sale shopping.  But the few that I’ve managed to get to have provided some fun stuff, like these cloches.  Not old, but just right for my creations.

My pal, Beth, and I always say, “Everything looks better under glass.”  It you are a dealer and having trouble selling something, sit it under a dome.  Well, that might not work for chairs and such, but you know what I mean.

A tale of tech troubles and many mushrooms

cottage, family, mushrooms

806ECBB2-0E94-4A69-8F44-5C3A94EADE0A
Remember my quest to make two hundred mushrooms?  I am on my way.  Especially if you count three at a time on one display.

Working on fungi this week has been a wonderful escape from my digital woes.  OMG, my email issues have been a nightmare.  From hours on the phone, re-explaining, waiting to codes, call backs and answers that never come, to finally being able it get into it, but in a round about, not so easy way.

E4613CD6-F6EB-4494-B6D1-E3C27EAA1BF8

It gave me great joy to chop right into the lacy skirt of a vintage gown to make sweet, lil schroomies!  If I am feeling frustration with some of life’s irritations, a dab of creative time can be just what I need to forget my troubles.

878D01E3-C876-4452-B7F5-57357912324E

Not only was my email messing with me, we had issues with getting tax forms we needed, and were also dealing with a dead phone and a hard to find replacement, then all of the minor little glitches that can pop up in a new phone once it is set up.

Rich lost his phone deep in the woods.  He’d found two pounds of morels, but realized his iPhone wasn’t in the pocket where he’d last seen it.

Oops!

EB4415A2-D206-410F-9186-9CE6120612C5

So he trudged back through swamps and deadfalls with no luck.  Then drove 45 minutes home to get the iPad so he could track the phone.  Then re-trudged through the woods and the swamps and the deadfalls to search again, this time, armed with Find My iPhone.

But once again, Oops.

97A63543-45BB-4101-9D5E-92C8AA80E44A

The ipad didn’t have cellular and wouldn’t work without his phone.   He drove the 45 minutes back to our house, retraced his steps, this time while carrying my iPhone and a working app.  Success!  He found it after a full day of looking, or trying to get to the other side of the swamp to look.

He came home very dirty, washed his clothes right away so I wouldn’t get poison ivy from a laundry basket, which I often do after he has been hiking.  And you do remember me saying that we had been trying to replace a dead phone? Yep.  He was so diligent about getting his woodsy clothes washed that he forgot to check pockets and also washed the phone he had looked for all day that was in the pocket.

598D8234-EBFF-46F4-BB28-814D88CBD335

It was too funny to be upset about. We invited some friends over to eat fried morels with us, and I spent some time crafting to forget about all of our technology issues.  The day off was certainly needed and helped my frame of mind.

Mushroom paintings

Hand painted, hand painted signs, mushrooms

DDBDD0E6-5130-48FE-BA10-B7441BF9A5D4
The other day, my husband was building a new raised garden bed for us and was using old fencing around it to keep the hens out.   He left a pile of these trimmed pieces on the ground after adjusting the fence height.  They caught my eye.

4A7839BD-D304-44C0-B758-66CC1FE52E21

The wood was just what I needed for some little mushroom paintings that I’d been thinking about doing.

9DCFB68E-6E1D-40E6-8EA5-3C6F0117FB8E

I scrubbed then sealed the old wood, front and back, before painting on it.  Then added my schroomies.

1B731655-CC1D-4215-8292-69261C994F00

The paintings are pretty simple, so I was able to keep the cost down.  I’d like to do more, I enjoyed these and I have got a bucket full of wood trimmings to use.  But between my concussion and not knowing if theses will sell well or not, I’m holding back on making more for now. (How mature and unexpected of me)

The garden beds turned out wonderfully! Once we get some dirt and get started, I’ll be sharing those.

Inspiration, ancestors, and leprechauns

Easter isn’t until April, but I have been spending a good chunk of February getting ready for bunny-ing up my booth for the next First Friday at Good Juju.
80299DA1-9074-4F92-922B-5F3703CC598A
And since we are also in the vicinity of St Paddy’s, I’ve added a section of green and good luck snuggled between the bunnies and eggs.

C6611194-ABBF-49D3-8316-906F7ACB08AB

This wall is covered in spring daisies on a soft green background.  It is vintage wall paper, and my plan is to change it up seasonally.  I’ll roll up the used piece from the previous month and have it for sell when I do the change over.

I offer packets of ironed, cut wallpaper for crafting in my online Boutique but I’ve never sold the stuff this way.  It will be good for bigger projects, and ends up being about 6-7’.

B3AECD68-02A7-42C4-86A3-A68C010377E7

Although, when I stapled this piece up, it was chosen for the pretty green tones, then it dawned on me that around here, daisies were more of a summer flower, not early spring.  Dur.
7E7880F6-7CBB-4750-91EA-DBF4FEBC5B95
I kinda doubt anyone else will think it through that far.  Ha, can you picture someone critiquing my use of Daisies in March?

“Why, I’ve never seen such a disrespectful display of unseasonal flowers in my life! No way am  I shopping in that uninformed booth!”

63D2E228-5CE8-441D-BDCA-BF67F84046D9

Another nitpick?  I’m not totally satisfied with the hairstyle on my shamrock doll.  She has a 1960’s Barbie bubble cut from the front. From behind, it’s a nice updo.  This girl should dump her hairdresser (me).  I might bring scissors and snip in some bangs before she meets our guests.

25534E4E-1B88-475A-97C4-97DBC4E4AA12

While one whole corner is set to celebrate the luck of the Irish on their special day, most of my decor consists of green stuff and green Easter eggs.  I have a couple vintage clover brooches, the doll, and two mushrooms made from the same tattered, old material as the doll dress.

This one has a tiny leprechaun grabbing some shade underneath.

AC2BE789-1554-4199-9DF1-C52EC51DA50B

There are also silver pendants with an Irish theme.  I have Celtic knots, green stones, moons, and dragons.  Kinda Irishy.  I not a beer drinker, so have never considered drinking green beer, and really am not at all into the typical St Patrick’s Day type of celebrating.  But I like to remember that I am part Irish and pretend it is my holiday too, like many of us do.

(Also part English and German according to 23 and Me DNA testing. Sounds like there could’ve been some disagreements and a bit of bombing between my ancestors, huh?)

053A2F0F-1E9A-40AA-B16E-4BF95B6341CB

There will be more Easter to show you from the other side.

And then the last wall is all neutrals, inspired by Yellowstone- which I think starts up again soon.  I do enjoy that show, but I seriously LOVE  the two prequels.  OMG, the romance!  The scenery!  How Gorgeous.  Well, I’ll show that wall later, I have a feeling no one will interpret as Yellowstone, but hey, inspiration isn’t exact because then it’s called copying, right?

Well, as I mentioned with my last post, and as you might have noticed if you have ever read my blog over the last 16 years- I tend to get obsessions.

It had been a while since I cleaned things up.  Both my Etsy shop and the Boutique were sadly neglected.  When I made my Velvet mushroom tutorial, I did a little rearranging.  I also marked some of my previous tutorials down.

So if you’d like to learn how to assemble an art journal, craft a mini dress form, create a cuff bracelet (all no sew, by the way) plus a few more- all classes are available at their new, lower prices.

And you can find them all here: http://www.karlascottage.com/category_15/All-items.htm

It is also on Etsy.

The class is in blog form, with written instructions that you could copy, print and keep on your desk plus the same instructions written out with step by step photos and tips.
