Someone always ends up being a fairy

fairies, jewelry, paintings, Travel, vintage paper/collage art

Scrapbooking_028

I’m in a fairyswap !!!!!!! I am so excited about it, I am a fairy-aholic.  I was disappointed to see all the fairy jar swap people, knowing I had missed it and was too late to get in. Taking pity on me, (or maybe wanting to stop my whining?) Natasha Burns http://natashaburns.blogspot.com/ set up a mini swap with some talented bloggers, Heather http://prettypetalsboutique.blogspot.com/, and Holly http://hollydoodledesigns.com/WordPress/.

This will be my 3rd swap, and I am glad it is a small one, the charm one I am in is a doozy.  I need to make somewhere between 15- 22- 33?? I need a final count, I am confused.  I also need to start making them…….Scrapbooking_031_2

I’ve spent the last two days making scrapbooks of my trip to give as thank yous to the people we stayed with.  For my sister-in-law, Sandy, I found a clearance journal for 50 cents and foofed up the cover with vintage goodies and scrapbook paper.  Hers has no photos yet, I need to finish it tonight so I can think about doing some charms……Scrapbooking_033

For my brother-in-law, I bought one of those mini, ready to go scrapbooks, this one is from Studio K, love that line!!

I added more papers, copies of my paintings, some hand drawn doodles and writing, stickers, then the photos.  I like to make pockets to slide the pictures into.  I make the pockets from card stock so they are sturdy.Scrapbooking_035

The ready to go books are so nice, since the background is already printed, they make simple gifts, just with a few personal touches and pictures, they are ready to go.

Scrapbooking_009 And of course, in every book I make, someone always ends up being a fairy.  This is Emily, she is a tiny, dainty little 15 year old who has a natural fairy quality about her.  She makes a lovely sprite.

Scrapbooking_017

Oh- I have been having inquiries about my hand painted charms.  If anyone wants one, here are few to look at, I can send close ups, or photos of more.  They are $18 each plus $2 shipping. Thanks!!

Home again Home again, Jiggitty Jog- I ate too much on vacation and now I’m a fat hog

It feels so good to be back in Kansas!! The trip was great, but of course, when you live here, there is no place like home!Vacation_tn_nc_in_089

Twinkle was worn out by the end of the trip, so many new toes to nibble and new yards to explore.

Vacation_tn_nc_in_078 I’ll miss having my morning coffee on Sissy’s porch.  She has such unique features in her garden. The morning sun sparkled through the crystals she draped over this candle holder  hanging by the deck.Vacation_tn_nc_in_080

This white flower at the corner of the deck would open up wide every morning, then close throughout the middle of the day. It would reopen in the evenings while we were outside sipping our wine.  Does anyone know what kind of flower it might be???  She says it just came up, she didn’t plant it, but that if it is a weed, she doesn’t care.Vacation_tn_nc_in_088

Last time I visited her, I brought one of my "Magic Mirrors".  It is an old frame (whitewashed) that held a curved glass.  I had a mirror cut and placed under the glass for a magical effect.

Reflected is one of her many angel collections on top of an antique wardrobe.  You can also see a fairy watercolor I did for her a few years ago.Vacation_tn_nc_in_084

Here is a close up of the watercolor.  I guess it would be more accurate to call it a mixed media piece, I used a shimmering, white metallic acrylic paint to make the fairies glow and there is glitter sprinkled over the page too.Vacation_tn_nc_in_081

My sister also had a copy of a watercolor I did of the barn my grandparents owned.Vacation_tn_nc_in_074

I am always flattered when I go to visit and see my work hanging on the walls of relatives.  It is nice to know they have enjoyed the gifts.  (unless they only hang them while I am visiting, and take them down as soon as I leave??)

This monochromatic watercolor is hanging in my brother-in-law’s home up in the North Carolina hills.  It is a painting I did of the home his dad grew up in.Vacation_tn_nc_in_002

And at my sister-in-law’s home on the river in Tennessee, she had this yellow iris hanging in her kitchen.  Both of these were done so many years ago, I had completely forgotten them.

Vacation_tn_nc_in_006

My sister-in-law, Sandy has a fantastic home too! She lives out in the middle of nowhere, in a home nestled into a valley. It is built on the river and has a wrap around porch where we spent much of our time.Vacation_tn_nc_in_008

I could have sat and watched the river from her porch all week.  But we did take time to eat loads of fresh veggies right from their garden, go into town to antique, visit a local winery and do some mega wine tasting, visit a Mennonite farmer’s market, and then race around on their 4 wheeler through the woods.Vacation_tn_nc_in_018

Sparkle enjoyed the view off the deck too, but didn’t care for the 4 wheeler.

Vacation_tn_nc_in_012

The town that Sandy lived in was full of cute shops, but I just didn’t have much luck in shopping that day.  Some days are good for shopping, others are made for just going "feeling" (as my mother used to call it when she went shopping but didn’t buy anything.)Vacation_tn_nc_in_003

Sandy has a doll collection that her son has always hated, he says that they ‘freak him out’.  She was kind enough to start to pack them up before he arrived for the weekend from Charlotte where he is starting a new job.

I told her she couldn’t pack them up, he’s a grown man and if he was scared of dolls, then that was just a good excuse for us to mess with him. I arranged all the dolls on top of the cabinet and had them staring down at his bed in the guest room.  That wasn’t quite enough, so I gave them some knives.  One doll was hidden under the pillows of the bed, and another stared up from underneath the bed on the floor.  He was properly freaked, I think.  And Sandy and I giggled like little girls.  Vacation_tn_nc_in_063

The entire trip was fun. In N. Carolina we hiked in the Grandfather Mountain area.  Notice how far back I am with my camera taking this shot?  That is as close as I ever get to the edge of anything up that high! I hate heights. I was comfortable back on the trail looking out through the trees at the view, but wouldn’t venture out any closer.

My brother-in-law has a house he built himself up on a mountainside.  It was a house full of happy kids, animals, and laughter. Our time there was rustic and beautiful and full of life.

I can’t imagine a better trip.  It was like a sampling of 3 different styles of B&Bs. First, Sandy’s river side ranch in the valley with its grand porches. Then, Mark’s cabin up on the mountain with its rustic charm.  After that was Sissy’s magical cottage full of glitter and flowers.  But best of all, was that these weren’t really B&Bs, but family homes full of our loved ones.  It was a special treat to be able to go and stay with all of them. Leandra_423_002

But as wonderful as it all was, we had to cut the trip short a day to get home and see Sugarwings.  We missed her too much.

There is just no place like home.  Especially when you have a tiny little fairy girl waiting there for you!

Accomplishments

Film, flowers, hand painted signs, paintings

Garden_045 I got done all the things I needed to today!

1-My partner in faux finishing and I worked on the bid for the HUGE job that starts after my trip.

2-I painted this baby shirt for my niece’s baby shower, since I will miss the party while on my trip.  The tiny shirt is painted with an "N" for Nebraska, but with flowers added since she is expecting a girl.

Garden_048 3- I painted this "simplify" sign for a reader, Kathy, who saw another one I had done and asked me to paint one for her.

Notice, the sock on the table? I didn’t have a rag handy and had to pull a sock off my foot real quick for a wipe up.  It happens in art sometimes.

Garden_063 4- I wrote a submission for an article with the photos we worked on this week.  Garden_066

5- I made a cute package to send the submission in to the editor.Garden_056

6- I got all the water sprinklers in place for my son to water our new plantings while we are out of town.

7- I bought a bunch of groceries for my son to eat while we’re gone.  But he doesn’t eat much, he has lost 100 pounds in the last year. The guy lives on turkey sandwiches.

8- I had a BBQ with Sugarwings and her parents, and got lots of good cuddles, even though she was making green snot bubbles most of the time. I think I might be guaranteed to have a runny nose about half way through my vacation.Scrapbook

9-I worked on my art journal to take with me so I would have pictures of Sugarwings that I could stare at while I was missing her. This photo uses a tag I bought from Beth’s Etsy shop.http://bethleintz.typepad.com/

10- I mailed my May Bucket prizes and took care of some Ebay stuff.

11- I planted all my veggies and got my garden ready for the season.Garden_051 The sun was going down as I finished in the garden, and the wild flowers I planted earlier at the edge of the woods were looking so pretty against the darkness of the trees behind them.Garden_054

Wild roses grow up the trees and the air was filled with their scent.  Geez, now I am homesick again. It is hard to leave my flowers behind for ten days.

Tomorrow I pack, mail Ebay stuff, rent a ton of books on tape, suds up the 3 dogs and throw them all in the car once they are clean.  Even the puppy who gets carsick.  Nothing makes a trip go faster than a good book on tape and the smell of dog barf coming from the back seat.  I think I’ll need a few rolls of paper towels for the trip too.

Bucket Binge

paintings

So, what if I didn’t get anything done for the art show today? I had fun being inspired by the great prize package of goodies I won from Vickie http://vickichrisman.blogspot.com/ and made this bucket with it.  I seem to be on a bucket binge.Bird_bucket_010

I found the coolest buckets with a space to weave ribbon through.  So I used one of the ribbons from Vickie’s packet.Bird_bucket_009

I lined the bucket with paper she gave and topped it with lace from her also.Bird_bucket_004

Vickie had a cute little tag stamped with birds, I used that idea to paint some little birds on the tag I tied to the bucket and painted some birdies on the branches I painted on the bucket itself. Then, glued on  the mini scrabble letters that spell out "spring."Bird_bucket_013

While I was in the bucket business, I painted this one too.

Here is the front.Bird_bucket_015

And there are mini roses on the back, with a sheer gold ribbon tied up on it.

I also listed some signs on Ebay, including "Simplify" which I showed earlier today.  Hey, maybe I’d get more done if I wasn’t on the computer so much. Two postings in one day??  I should go finish my portraits I need to work on.

Or paint more buckets? I have two more to do, and they are fun.  Hey, if you’d like one, they are $10 for the painted rose one and $12 for the embellished birdie bucket plus $4.05 postage each. I paint fast and can keep my prices down.

You can still enter the MAY BUCKET drawing- just comment on any post, and I’ll enter you.

Beginings of a Banner

paintings

Banner_001 My banner is beginning- here are some of the first brush strokes.  Yes, I know I have an art show May 6th that I am not ready for yet. Yes, I know I have my husband’s boss coming for dinner and a big birthday bash planned that week and should at least try to kill some of the larger dust bunnies in the house.  And yes, I know that I have nothing listed on Ebay.

BUT BETH GAVE ME A BANNER AND I WANT TO PLAY WITH MY NEW TOY!!

I was wondering if anyone wanted step by step instructions on how I am doing the painting?  I have been asked lately to do some, maybe this would be a good place to start?  I’ve done "how to" articles for magazines and enjoy it.   Not because I just like telling people what to do, either.  I’d rather think of it as sharing.

May_bucket_012

Hey, there is something new in the May Bucket!

And it is not too late to enter, keep commenting, at the bottom of any of these posts and you will be entered. As many times as you would like to enter.

I’ve looked around and have ideas for a 2nd prize too, since soooo many inquired about the May Bucket.  Maybe a 3rd prize will have to be found too.

I have had some emails not go through when I have tried to answer some of the comments or personal emails I have been getting. Sorry. I do answer each one, but I have had about a dozen come back this week for some reason.

If only all days went this well!

paintings

May_bucket_010 It has been one of those wonderful days that seem to have extra hours.  I didn’t get up early, but here it is only 3pm and I feel like I have got a lot done and still have a chunk of daytime left and energy to do more!  Plus, tonight LOST is on.  What a good day!  I might get take out Tai food and sit in front of the TV after I accomplish a few more things!

What did I do today, so far?  Well, after enjoying an hour or so of reading favorite blogs (if only every day could start like that!)~ I added something to the May Bucket Give Away.

Not exactly a big accomplishment, but fun to do!  Here it is- a vintage pearl bead necklace in Robin’s Egg Blue.  It is a nice heavy one, and knotted between each pearl.  I adore the color, and can’t imagine anyone who it would not be pretty on.  Although, I’d love to see a redhead win it… that color would look so good with firey red hair.

In the May Bucket Give Away so far:

  • well, of course, a hand painted floral bucket- a prize in itself?
  • a china shard pendant on a sterling silver bail
  • delicate lace trimmed hankie
  • 2 old keys, foofed up a bit with silver paint and a bow
  • vintage pearls in robins egg blue
  • NOT THE PUPPY- (unless, I can’t convince her to stop peeing on everything)

I worked on a watercolor of my other Dorkie, Sparkle.  Here is her painting. Still wet, and maybe not done. I’ll finish it tonight and get a frame while out junking tomorrow.  Yes, I know!! I am not only getting a wonderful day today, tomorrow I get a junking day!!!!!!  How lucky am I????Sparkle_painting_001

Here is my Sparkle painting so far.  Also, I started a rose painting and added a rose to these cool little doodads I found in the burn pile. Should never let a husband clean out the garage, he’ll put great stuff in a bon fire.

Sparkle_painting_010 I’ll add hooks to the back of the doodads and hang them on the wall. Or maybe I can sell them to someone else who likes pink roses on green doodads on their walls.  Any takers?  I can mail them right to you, $8 each!

Sparkle_painting_003 My last big project for today was to haul all of these rocks and arrange them to form a flower bed. I added an old iron headboard that I will plant evergreens behind, and set a chair in front of.  This area needs major work after the construction that has been going on here- it was all torn up ( I used to have a cute pond in that spot, sigh) I am off to the garden center for mulch and shrubs and to TJ Maxx to see if they still have the big white iron chair I drooled over last week.

A client came by to pick up and pay for  some artwork.  She is always hard to deal with (before I wrote this about her, I asked if she reads blogs, she doesn’t know what they are, so I can feel free to say how nasty she always is to me.)  Why do I paint for her again, after bad experiences?  Well, I like to paint.  And she does pay me.  although, not a lot, I am very reasonable because I am fast.    She always complains and has me redo everything.  And not in a nice way.  This time, she got the watering cans and said, "You will have to paint something on the back, I will be facing it the other direction".  No, "I’m sorry I didn’t tell you this before you painted it" No, "I’ll pay you for your time". No "please or thank you".  I should have charged her more, but instead, I decided to be gracious, and added a sprig of geranium to the back while she waited.   I feel like unkind people should be shown how to act properly, and try to set a good example.

And anyway, I want people to be happy with what I paint for them. Even if some people just don’t seem to know what ‘happy’ is.  Sour puss, crabby, nasty, person.  Oh, well, that wasn’t very gracious, was it?

Eggstravaganza

paintings

Easter_egg_party_019 Well, the eggs (and fingers) are all dyed and the goodie baskets passed out and all is left are the remnants of the party. But it is colorful and pretty and I just might not pack it all away quite yet. It looks festive!Easter_egg_party_021 And I hate to waste the dye, might just have to do a few more eggs this afternoon.

The 3-5 year olds came up with some glittery colors on their boiled eggs while I was hand painting the hollowed out ones. Of course, the kids had a go at the paints too, and luckily I keep a cupful of old brushes just for these type of occasions.  Here are a couple of my painted eggsEaster_egg_party_017

In my studio, everything gets glitter on it, whether I meant it to or not.  Today was no exception.  Easter_egg_party_015

Bagsful of treat filled eggs were found after a hunt that went much quicker than the time it took to fill and hide the eggs! Kansas Spring time weather is always iffy, but we had a break between last night’s storms and today’s scattered showers.

Piddling Around Instead of Working **again**

paintings

Img091 Yes, yes, I know I already posted today. And yes, I know, I should be getting ready for my egg decorating party tomorrow.  But haven’t I mentioned before that I tend to get side tracked and do what I feel like doing instead of what I should be doing?

I just added a photo album of some of my murals to this blog, and as I came across this picture, it just made me giggle a bit.  Of course, no one would want real squirrels on top of their kitchen cabinets (too rat-like) but how fun to have some mischievous painted ones.   Looks like the scene outside my studio window right now, squirrels running around, excited that spring is here.

Vintage Roses

paintings

Vintage_roses_002This morning has slipped by and I sit here still in my jammies, with all the things I meant to do, still waiting. I ended up spending time figuring out my camera’s options and reorganizing picture files on my computer.  Not exactly a waste of time, but not what really, really needed to be done.

Anyway, I got a decent photo of this rose watercolor I had done a couple of years ago.  I have a snippet of it on my blog already, but this picture is so much better, I wanted to show it.

My sister and I were having a great junking day in Indianapolis a few years back and came across a gorgeous old painting on faded paper.  I bought it, and painted my own version of it, and this is it.  Old paintings inspire me, and I do change them a bit when I do them and make them my own, so I try not to feel like a "copy cat" of the original artist’s work.  Heck, I’d be flattered if someone was inspired to paint by one of my watercolors.

Graffitti Roses

paintings

Door_004My good friend, Angie, is going through a rough time and I wanted to do something to cheer her up.  So, I snuck over to her store when it was closed and painted some dark pink roses on her front door.  I almost felt like I was a vandal, but I think she’ll be happy to see them and won’t have me arrested.Door_009

Here is a close up, just a sweetly simple rose on each door panel to brighten up her entrance when she comes in to work tomorrow.  I lightly roughed up the panel with sandpaper, added the roses, then topped them with a water based clear coat.  They were dry and protected, and I was done in under 30 minutes.  Made me think that I should take more time out of my day to do something nice to surprise a friend.  Well, at least I hope she thinks it is a nice surprise and not some sort of graffitti by vandals!   I didn’t sign my name just in case…..

Her store is called "My Father’s Daughter" and is an example of her romantic, wistful style and she has plenty of roses inside to go along with the ones on her door.  Next time you are in Lawrence, Kansas you really should drop in to see what she has.  Plus, you’d enjoy meeting her, she is about the nicest person around.

Two entries for today and something every day this week.  Maybe I should have been working harder on something else and not playing online so much this week?  I have enjoyed writing but can’t promise to post this often every week.  Art shows to get ready for, things to list on Ebay (if I can get over my hatred of packing and shipping), house guests arriving (rooms to redo for guests!!!), gardens to plant.  Hip, hip, horay, it is springtime!!!
