redos

Just an after, I forgot to take a before

Yep, I shoulda snapped a picture of this trophy-ish thing before I painted it.  It was slightly vintage, not antique, kind of a fake, green brass color on a wooden block.

15680E67-235A-44CB-BBB1-3A3ECFF82069

I dry brushed some white chalk paint over it, leaving some of the dark tones to peep through in crevices.

The wooden base was painted too, but the end result was sort of blah.  So, I covered it in text, added an old clock face, a text pom pom, and rhinestone.

BD7D29D2-6714-42BD-920E-0A19A125C255

It’s much better now.
I guess you’ll have to take my word for that since you have nothing to compare it to.

An altered doll wardrobe, everything is better with wallpaper!

Beth gave me a doll wardrobe that definitely showed it’s age.  She knew I needed a challenge.

2E9FAE39-574E-454A-ABDE-8BD3F9B919EF

See what I mean?
It needed a few minor repairs where the joints had pulled apart, but mostly just some pretty papers.

88D760DF-B65A-4270-A0AE-E1EF61E58C6A

Keeping with the theme, I glued vintage paper with pictures of children’s clothes patterns to the inside.

I used two wallpapers on the outside.

4195B6DE-8065-4623-A9FF-5507CFD06B17

Then I added clusters of flowers on the ribbons that tie the top and bottom together. I sanded the edges a little, so it didn’t look too fresh and new, then hung a nicely tattered, old doll dress on the hook inside.

Most likely, I’ll just use it as a storage box on my desk, not for doll clothes.  But it was cute to see it with the dress hanging in it, as it was meant to be.

Christmas decor blended into winter decorating

It was time to take down my holiday decorations and trees.  I didn’t do a lot (for me) this year, mostly trees, pinecones, and lots of lights.

C82767B6-C206-4746-A8E8-6C0082A685C4

The warm white lights had brought me a lot of joy this season.  The first thing I did every single morning after letting the puppy out to potty was to flip all of the power strips on to get that cozy glow going.  Molly wakes up way too early and everything is still pitch black and feels very wintery.  She is desperate to go tinkle and doesn’t care if I am half awake, she is ready to go.

When she comes back in, I take a few moments to snuggle with her before making coffee and getting on with my day.  Typically, I am not an early riser, but we enjoy our quiet mornings together with the lights sparkling in the darkened rooms.

January itself is too stark to go from a house full of festivity to none at all.  So the lights above the windows are staying for a while.

Along with our hot tea and cocoa station.  It got de-Christmassed, and we have rules about no cocoa parties unless they are near a Christmas tree.

But we have been known to still sip a cup of hot chocolate now and then…

The mercury glass stayed out too.  It fit nicely with the holiday, but I think it will also be pretty for the rest of the winter.  Anything that is reflective adds light to the dark months.

The Christmas trees had been decorated mostly in pinecones and twinkle lights in honor of a happy day that Ryan and I had together gathering pinecones last year.

B2DB20E3-B72F-439C-8513-15E20E0AD45A

After plucking them out of the branches and packing the trees away, I decided to keep the pinecones out for a while.  I stuffed newspapers into the matt white pottery and a few mercury glass candle holders, then topped that with the pinecones.  Some rosebuds, dried from an arrangement that came after Ryan’s death were put under glass for a hint of faded color.

Swans from Lesa Daily’s A Snowbird’s Song class are on top of the kid’s game and book cabinet.  I like their silhouettes in the mirror.

The hutch previously had lots of mini, battery operated LEDs on its shelves.  I took them down, but kind of miss them.  I might bring a strand back out.

The mantle didn’t get much of a changearoo.  I took out the pink shiny brites and left the garland stuffed with hydrangeas and pinecones.

For now, these changes feel right.  I have some natural elements from outdoors and mostly neutral, low-color tones with a hint of sparkle throughout.  Plus warm throws and lots of extra pillows, for us and the dogs.  It always hurts to put the Christmas clutter away, but streamlined, serene surroundings aren’t bad either.  I’m spending so much time indoors, it is nice to have the calm decor around me, along with the warmth of the lights that I left in place.

I’ve had this little terrarium for ages and always thought I’d try to make it look a bit more vintage.  (This is the after)
6695D25F-3449-44CD-87EA-BF8780AED56A
Here is the before.

Then I saw that Hobby Lobby still sells the exact one, and when I noticed it on the shelf, I thought to myself that it really needed a makeover.  I guess I’d just gotten used to seeing it as is in my house and had gotten to the point where I probably didn’t see it at all.

4A443F0D-AA02-4025-AA8D-3F16A1073E8E
In the midst of putting away all of the Christmas stuff (admittedly, there wasn’t much of it this year, but it did take all day), I took a break and repainted this white.  I glued a couple of ornamental dodads over the open hearts too.

67DB64C9-00A9-4FAC-815A-006724C6C4DD
Looking for found hearts is a hobby of mine, I love seeing them appear in nature.  But not so much as cut outs on things in my home, although I do love this old, old, tin trim filled with hearts.

There might have been too much impatience in getting it done, because I had some issues with the glued on pieces.  I was trying to paint them while the glue was still wet and at one point, the heavy, wet paint was too much for the gloppy glue and one embellishment slid right off.  Which wouldn’t have been so bad, if it had just landed next to the terrarium on the newspaper I was using to protect the table.

Nope.  It decided to fling itself away from the newspaper with a hefty bouncing motion and spew minuscule paint drops across my kitchen floor.

Once I finally got it dry, in one piece, and the floor mopped up, I refilled it.  I pretty much reused what I’d already had in it before, just rearranged and cleaned it up a little.

It might be a tad too springlike inside for the rest of my winter decor in the room, but I like a splash of spring somewhere in my home.   I keep some favorite things in it, porcelain roses broken off of a vase, a sea shell with a glossy pink interior, crystals and pretty rocks I have found on trips.

Oh, and crystal balls, plus some houseplants that are easy to keep alive.  And a sweet birdie.  I always need little birdies around.  I hope she likes her spiffed up, new home.

A mini treasure box makeover

collections, redos

0D226B5F-EEF8-445C-891C-A5FF42C85824

Years ago I found a kitschy, plastic, touristy treasure box for a dollar, brought it home and tossed it in a drawer and forgot about it.

F8DF55E8-8A73-4D5E-AB16-E6ADCD847432
See, it had potential, but needed work.

54F098C9-CD1D-41D0-8711-E5EF7E52E42D
But not much work.

I pried off the green, plastic bauble, dry brushed on some white paint, and glued a larimar stone on top.

Now it makes the ideal storage for my summery, beach colored bracelets.

More from the Grand Fairy Room Switch Up

cottage, Dew Drop, fairies, redos

Dewdrop lives in the hills of North Carolina, but we still want her to have a place she calls home back in Kansas.

(Because , of course- there is no place like that!)

After redoing the larger of the upstairs rooms as a birthday surprise for her big sis, I spiffed up the attic room for her.

7CA845A1-34FD-4F13-B284-357813A7D723

I have to admit, that setting up the dollhouse was the most fun part.

771B4AD5-53AF-4C23-96BF-23FFAD9200AD

She is ten now, and still loves her dolls.  But she doesn’t use the play kitchen stuff much, so the little stove and cabinet are now used for storage instead.

A2D2D423-3F82-408C-AD87-E16AB7FC483F

Mostly, I shuffled decor items, fairies and toys from the other room into this one, and left the mermaid and unicorn bedspreads and wall color that were already here.

B49CA172-3EEE-4AED-9D8E-44FA5E36B459

The only purchase I made was these pastel rainbow, ombré curtains with cut out stars that shine.

Amazon carries them, and they are prettier in person than in the photos on the site. I’m glad I gambled and got them, since I felt the colors looked a little dull on Amazon.

7185D4C3-67BD-4F37-853C-3C9E1B880E25
And when topped with the fairy collection that had been spread all around the other room, they look even better.

The collection does too, I like seeing them all in one spot.

A tad bit more of autumn cottage redoing

Have you ever looked at throw pillow covers on Amazon? I had no idea there was such a vast option to create a new look for the sofa!
5D421211-22DE-482C-8D18-E4C57C061506
In the past, I would either make coverings (in my sloppy, bad sewing way, that tied shut because I couldn’t make buttonholes or zippers), or I’d splurge and buy new pillows that I didn’t really need and created a storage problem.

Well, no longer. Well made pillow cases with invisible zippers are pretty cheap on amazon and arrive in a couple days.

I bought 4 of the cream velvet with Pom Poms for $9 each, but decided to only use two for now. I like the mix with the two warmer toned pillows for Fall.  But 4 cream ones for winter will be ideal.

The two hydrangea with vintage text on velvet were also $9 a piece.  All were Prime purchases, so had free shipping.

The lush, plush throw with fringe was $17 at Homegoods.

And oh my, that is about as cuddly and welcoming as a blanket can get.

567E6AB6-5B77-4C65-BBB6-F5B6EACDBC21

The rest of the redo is just moving some things that I already had around.   I thought the vintage blue mirror that holds a pumpkin my friend Tami made looked pretty with the blue hydrangea pillow.

Then, I added a blue rimmed plate to match.  Blue isn’t a typical Autumn color, but I felt like the rich, deep shade suited the season.

Spring and summer are more to my taste than Fall.   When the leaves start to turn, I start fretting about being cooped up for winter.

And this year?

With Covid still spreading, the dread of winter is really looming over me. Getting together outdoors with friends and family has meant the world to me.  Losing that time to cold weather will not be easy.

I might turn into a shopaholic, serial redo-er to keep myself sane indoors.  Look out, Amazon, your pillow cover supply is in danger!

Renewed, not erased

cottage, redos, Ryan

3AD132A3-1EA0-41D3-A626-56F1F12F55E1
For Ryan’s 40th birthday, we redid his apartment on the side of our house.  His brother was hired to do most of the work, Ry was his assistant and also did a lot of the painting.

What I hadn’t expected, was that he had strong opinions on how the rooms were going to be done.  That is when I discovered that he was a HGTV addict.  And had some good ideas as well as good taste.

5A63E10C-2C7A-4CD8-95C2-1D7E07C8480F
After our son was gone, my husband started spending time up in the apartment, feeling close to Ryan while he read a book or just sat and thought.  We decided to make the room more functional as a guest room, or a place we could spend time in, while keeping Ryan’s original design choices.

Being in Ryan’s home felt good, and we took our time, deep cleaning, moving things around, hanging stuff.  It was nice to have a reason to be there, and we wanted to make the space more of a part of our home.  Kind of as a way to keep him close.

01D3BD4C-BA2F-4A77-AC31-A25132E36377
I didn’t change the bathroom at all.  I kind of wanted to hang different artwork, but the painting is one I did of a view from the Wyoming lake house vacation that he went on with us.  The colors don’t match the room, but he sat with me as I painted it and he loved that piece of art.

I would like to do a mosaic to hang on the front of the TV cabinet.  Maybe later.

The chair is one that I had in the main house, but thought it looked better up here.

The framed, vintage, cardinal print is something that will always remind me of him.  We have had a cardinal that has pecked at and attacked our windows since last October.  He became Ryan’s nemesis and we all laughed about their war for months.

ED04C04F-07EF-4053-9895-110401DB258C
That’s why I put the ceramic red bird on his coffee table.
We named the persistent bird, Malarkey, after a contestant on Top Chef last season.

Ryan was a cook and loved the show.  But he could not stand that guy, because Malarkey was a show off, bragging type who always ran his mouth and sometimes spoke badly of other contestants.

Ryan himself was a hard worker who believed in doing the tough jobs, not talking about doing them. He had no respect for guys like Malarkey and we used to cross our fingers and cheer for him to pack his knives and go each week.

It took us a while to watch the rest of the series after we lost our Ryan.  And when Malarkey finally left, Rich and I cried as we applauded the decision.

So now, Malarkey the red bird is represented in Ry’s apartment as a reminder of how many laughs we had together over both.

The purple statice was dried from a place floral arrangement sent by a nephew.

993B8C7B-6E5A-47F8-8973-D6E6C2148CAF

The multi color vases by the TV were saved from bouquets sent after Ryan died too.  I kept all of the vases and have plans to mosaic some of them.

24C35E6B-4C4D-43A6-A241-011803FDC899
The far wall is where the mini home gym once was.  We already have a workout area in the office, so changed this to a dining spot.

If some day, a grand fairy moves in, or if needed for some other reason, we can bring in a small fridge and microwave.  For now, a gate leg table from the hearth room and a couple chairs from the studio were enough.

26806C62-3D40-4EA9-AB64-A9D17A7A850A
Speaking of grand fairies moving in, Sugarwings discovered the XBox and now calls this her apartment when she goes up to play it.  Ryan would get a kick out of that.

I found these curtains at Walmart for $5 a pair, and they suit the room nicely.
4264FAFD-C95F-4B71-80C6-E9EDB2CAFC45
The bedspread isn’t as ideal, but was one I already had.  It’s okay, but I might look around for something a bit more “farmhouse-ish”.  The bedside lamp was $2 at Goodwill, and the headboard $100 from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

He already had the quilt there, it was one my mom made for him from some scraps leftover of clothes she’d sewn for him as a kid.

I had the mirror/window in the breezeway for over a decade and was ready for a change.  It goes well here.

52253949-2350-44EF-B102-5B4417197D29
The curtains actually match better in person than they seem to in the photo.  He had picked them out with me.

The print on the wall is from a painting I had done.  It also reminds me of my boy, but in a convoluted way.  When Ryan had to have his gallbladder removed, and we spent days at the hospital while he recovered from a serious infection, we roamed the halls quite a bit to stretch our legs.  While exploring, I was surprised to see the original of this hanging through the window of an office.

This picture will always make me think of those days hanging out at the hospital with him.

CE86B41B-8483-454C-9273-D03896D60978
This is sentimental too.  When I was on a pour paint kick, Ryan was my biggest fan.  I couldn’t convince him to do one with me, but he did keep me company and chose colors for me to make some pieces for his place.

He liked them so much, that he had a few too many hanging around.  I gave some away to people who cared about him and saved a couple that I have cut up to make into a photo album cover.  I’ve already been sorting photos of him and am impatiently waiting til I have time to create the book.

FB22DF55-E50F-46B3-AC46-DB4AFA4C1DC8
While redoing,
I touched up the paint that was nicked in a few spots and repainted his front door.  As I redid the entry, I pictured how happy Ryan would’ve been if I’d done that one day while he was at work.

I can just hear the excitement in his voice as discovered the fresh paint and he thanked me.

He was so appreciative of every little thing.  So much so, that he made doing things for him very rewarding, he was so pleased by it.  There wasn’t a single meal he ate that he didn’t compliment me on and thank me.  Every single dinner would get a “Thank you, Mom, that was good”.

I could tell if he really, really liked it, because the phrase would become, “Thank you, Mom, that was goooooood!”

I think he would like knowing that we are visiting his little home and spending time there.  I wish I could tell him, “Thank you for your decorating choices, Ryan.  They are gooooooood!”

More pictures of that house

family, redos

IMG_6553

This is my favorite room at the house we had bought for our son's family.  Think of the possibilities for this space!!! Oh my, I loved sitting there and enjoying the view.

IMG_6552

It is a giant room.  With French doors that open into the kitchen and bedrooms.

Personally, I would have painted the panelling, but everyone stopped me and said that some people like panelling and that I should leave that up to the new owners. So, all we really had to do was clean the windows, mop, and repaint the ceiling which was dingy.

IMG_6514

Two of the bedrooms opened onto the sunroom.

IMG_6534

And the kitchen.

IMG_6548

My husband scrubbed those windows until they gleamed!

IMG_6656

The area under the sun porch was inviting too.

IMG_6657

It also ran the whole length of the house.  What a great spot for entertaining! The family had used it for musical evenings, with the stage on the patio and seating in the yard. This house was meant for gatherings.

IMG_6017

Honey's favorite part of the property was the pond. She ate her weight in frogs each time she went out there.

IMG_6547

It was a sweet, little pond. Even with half of the frogs gone.

The Grandfather Tree is Almost a Table

cottage, family, redos

IMG_3725

Over a year ago, my husband's favorite tree fell down. He called it the Grandfather Tree because he took the grandfairies for walks in the woods and stopped to tell stories under it.

We found a guy to slice it up, then stored the stack of pieces that weighed hundreds of pounds in our garage where they were very much in the way.  When they were starting to dry out a bit, we found a craftsman to haul them off to a kiln and plane them down.

IMG_6405

This is Matt, the artist who is creating a table and mantel for us.  Here are the final pieces he has to work with. We have a few more, but these were the best.

IMG_6406

His shop is full of pieces he is already working on.

IMG_6407

And beautiful piles of lumber waiting to be transformed.

IMG_6606

I decided to go with the live edges turned inwards, so if I wanted the table to be more traditional looking for a dinner party, I could cover it with a cloth.  Matt built a water tight frame, and layed out the wood for me to come by and do a river rock scene down the center. I had lots of semi precious stones, crystals, and polished river stones in neutral tones.

IMG_6607

He will pour resin over it all.  It will be translucent with a shimmer of pearl. Of course, the black and white material on the back will be gone, so this will be mostly transparent.

IMG_6605

The heart is a gemstone and it will be at the head of the table where my husband sits. Under the table, the grandfairies will be woodburning special messages and we will have a list of all the grandfathers who came before us.

Matt is making tapered, square legs from the leftovers of the wood, and I will paint them a distressed white.

This has been over a year in the making, but at this stage, things are moving fast. The resin is poured and the table is ready for the sanding and polishing. I will have it delivered in time for A Snowbird's Song. This will seat about 12, so I will put my existing dining table (that seats 12 also) in to the hearthroom for the party, and will add another table in the living room so everyone will have a place to sit and enjoy their meals.
