Using up remnants, playing with ice resin

I am new to resin and a bit leery of it, but had something that needed a coat, so went for it.  And because that stuff is NOT cheap, I didn’t want to waste any that might be leftover.

There were a few shells left from my Florida trip, and I managed to cobble together a little fairy.  Now, while she isn’t perfect, I’d have been very happy to create her as a beach offering.  Since she was going to be immortalized in resin, I wasn’t quite as happy with her, but hey, this is what I had to work with.

83D23D30-715D-412C-A2D3-490264380CDC

The shells are glued to the inside of a takeout lid, then I poured the leftovers onto her.  She seemed bleak and empty, so I sprinkle gemstone flakes onto the wet resin and that helped.  She now lives amidst fluorite stones.

This is a process that I really, really liked.  I still will always leave beach fairies as thanks to nature, but maybe I will also scoop a few more up for making resin fairies too.

You have to love the beaches of St Augustine, and well, just everything about that city.

Technically, I guess it was Butler Beach, a tad south of town.  The dogs needed to be on leashes, which wasn’t quite as much fun for them, but the place is soooo pretty, we adore being there.

FCE7E32B-C03F-43E8-99C0-D4F8EAA93A1E

Shelling for fairies wasn’t as easy as our previous stop, but I managed to wrangle a few sprites into shape to place on the beach our last day.

Tide was coming in soon after these were made.  My husband asked to see the fairies, and as we walked over to them, they slipped out into the waves.

He said he’d always been confused by why I spend so much time hunting for the shells to make something that has no permanence, but now got it.  That it was the joy of creation, not the creation itself.  I don’t think those were his exact words, but it was a sweet conversation, however he phrased it.

It has been pointed out to me, that this gal has three boobs.

hmmm

Not what I was going for, but I sure see it now.  I just thought it was a pretty gown with a ruffled bodice. Her striped socks are my favorite part, they look like pieces of the same shell but were found at opposite ends of the shoreline.

One thing I appreciate about this area is the long, flat stretches of sand.  Ideal for walking.  And there is a “road” along the back where you can drive, so we bring our truck with all of our paraphernalia for the day.  We can easily haul a tent, chairs, and coolers to settle in and spend an afternoon.

A56DA559-CE32-41E0-B445-6B3C8B984BF0

And I have never seen it too busy.  The weather wasn’t perfect, but even when it is, it hasn’t been crowded when we have visited.

After living in a 19’ RV with four dogs for a few weeks, we decided to find an Airbnb while our boy, Dewdrop, and her mother came to see us.  It was sorta last minute, so we took what we could get.  And we got pretty lucky with this spacious, new house.

25D1B746-3660-480F-A822-36CFF4000D0E

I was sold when I saw photos of the fence.  What a luxury to just open a door to let dogs out, after being in an RV park and needing leashes!

Oh, and the pool was a bonus.

I already mentioned that our weather was less than perfect, but the grand fairies still spent time out there.  Then they’d run to the hot shower and I’d have warm towels waiting for them in the dryer.  So the pool wasn’t wasted, even if we couldn’t enjoy it as much as we’d like.

0F427B6E-6AD4-47BA-9C8F-E14515E37D6E

Renting the house was a good move, I cannot imagine what our trip would’ve been like in hotels or another, smaller rental we’d looked at.  This one had spacious areas and a covered porch.  We sat on the patio while it rained to drink our coffee in the mornings, and it felt very vacationy.

8073F318-ADF3-49A6-95B8-5F88584587E6

The house was around the corner from some cool, but swampy walking trails.  I doubt if I’d take dogs over there on warmer days when gators are active.

We were right down the street from the beach access too.  Now, would I have preferred a home with the surf as a backyard?

Well, dur.

But- this one was close.  We could zip down quickly between rain spurts if we wanted.  And that fence for the dogs?  Such a pleasant thing to have when you are crazy enough to travel for five weeks with four mutts.

41DF002B-A52E-4FA1-B778-1086F932B8DD

Most of the trip, we avoided big crowds.  Except that rainy Saturday when we, like the rest of the spring breakers thought they’d put on raincoats and go visit the historic downtown.  But even then, we avoided the biggest rush of them by looking for a place to eat on side alleys, not the main road, George St.   We also took a drive north to Vilano Beach to go to a place that didn’t have a two hour wait like most places in town.  I guess I’ve spent enough time in the area to know the ins and outs and avoid the most touristy spots.

D5207F2D-1FDB-413C-BE9C-2CC69E04F085

You never know when you plan a trip what weather you’ll get.  All you can do is hope for the best and be flexible, look for fun where you can.  We had planned a big day kayaking out on a crystal spring, but had to cancel.  We even scoured the weather map looking for a break in the clouds within a couple hours of driving time.

5A79159E-A12A-4941-9DA2-8C5418A48B7D

Nope, no weather break for us.  We hunkered down and made the most of our time.

Enjoyed the beach when we could, went to the seafood market and cooked, played games, and just enjoyed each other.

Our first beach stop on the never ending zig zag of a trip was Ft Pierce, which I’d never been to.

8FA1BC27-CDC5-4936-9FBB-C016838AD3FE

I will have to admit that Ft Pierce isn’t high on my list of cities that I love in Florida.  But- this trip was about the dogs, and the dog beach there was off leash, which  isn’t always  easy to find (Jupiter and Ft De Soto also have off leash beaches, and those are spectacular, but we couldn’t get reservations nearby).

The KOA we stayed at was new and quite nice.  So, yes, I guess this city was a good place to be.

AF25216B-3039-4143-8696-A20D5011A99B

And while the beach wasn’t the powder sugar of Siesta Key, that I love so much, the shelling was just my style.  HEARTS  galore!

F1E6AE31-3855-4A6F-8959-1D6B32BF2413

And so many broken bits and bobs to make into fairies and a mermaid.  These are not the typical shapes of shells that most people look for on the beach, there weren’t a lot of perfectly pretty shells.  Because the shore was a bit rocky, the waves beat up stones and shells to create the ideal pieces for the kind of things I like to find on beaches.

DA27C54D-1DCD-407F-9C7A-65C785E1456C

I did happy dances up and down the shore, finding hearts everywhere I went.  On many beaches, my main hold up in piecing together a fairy is often the head.  I look for smoothed out, oval shapes and they usually are the last part to find.  Some fairies take an entire week of shelling in certain cities, others come together quickly, like the three that I made in Ft Pierce.

0E5659B2-CFE9-404F-B61F-E784BAB11392

There were hearts up by the parking lot too.

45E96DD8-CF24-4541-8604-1801308B3A04

While I say that Ft Pierce isn’t my favorite city to go to, I reckon I should weigh my needs.  For that week, and what we wanted, it was ideal.  Lots of space for dogs to run and play, heart shapes and fairy pieces everywhere, plus a clean new campground to park our tiny home on wheels.

So yep, maybe I do love Ft Pierce?  The town itself is a bit on the low end of the tourist scale, but there are nearby cities to run to if I needed to pick anything up.  This is not a place I’d go to stay at a hotel on the shore with family, but for what we wanted, it couldn’t be better.

BCC7D1CA-B9B3-450F-9857-A60049845889

We could walk forever and be mostly alone with the dogs.

DCE21E33-52A3-4316-8D8E-C98B15C0549F

Other cities might have softer sand and less rocks, but being able to let four dogs run and play in the surf, to walk for miles without crowds, and to have a view of the crashing waves as we strolled?

After repainting my bedroom, I also moved artwork and mirrors around.  This was a mirror that hung in the studio, and it had a carved shell at the top, so it fit in nicely with my beach paintings.

But it was a little blah and a dull tan color.

A7A411E2-B193-4315-A800-57C307651135

So I gaudied it up a bit!

5447EA1B-136F-4031-8331-6B30C84B0AED

I used shells collected on our last vacation, mother of pearl and pearl beads, and Beth gave me a huge box of seashells she’d gotten from an estate sale.

My first move was to lay them out in a pattern to accentuate the carving at the top.

922574B4-FCB7-414C-B4D6-86B7907C463F

Then removed a few shells and  I spread tile adhesive in about 6” areas.  Kind of like icing a cake, not the way you’d lay tile on the floor.

50C46E9E-F985-4578-8F0B-34BA6DF0DFF0

It went on nice and thick, so I could smoosh the shells down into it.  While it was still wet, I pushed pearls and smaller shells into the adhesive that wasn’t covered by the main shells.

F5A22D46-678F-4B69-AB63-BBF3775699F0
I worked my way around the frame, in those 6” patches at a time.

CE79FFA2-91CD-460C-BEED-FD453E42ECE1

After it dried, I filled in bare looking spots with the Diamond Glaze and sprinkled crystal quarts chips into it.

D94A4E6B-90A3-4C7E-A534-79881CF5E514
It may look like a jumble, but there was a plan.  Big shells at the top, then black and gray ones down the sides, starting with darker at the top and going lighter towards the bottom.  The very bottom is all cream and white.

B8D200EE-AFD9-4E9C-90DF-8FE1BC33A987
I go back and forth, wondering if it is glorious or just too gaudy.  But since I do enjoy some over the top foof, I think I like it.

Marco Island Seashell Fairies and a Mermaid

During our long, many legged jaunt, we kept pretty busy.  A wedding, family to visit, jet skiing, beach exploring, Disney, and moving from place to place, resettling in somewhere new every few days.

564EA40D-9216-4537-A17D-8A3460BAE371

The trip was both hectic and relaxing at the same time.  It zipped by so quickly that I didn’t really have a chance to miss studio time.  But when traveling, I do miss creating things.

Years ago, I started making seashell fairies with bits and pieces found on the sand.  It was not only a thank you to nature for the beautiful beach, it was an outlet for me to do something crafty while far away from my studio.

666EF714-8558-436B-B2EF-EE743C42C11B

I rarely see a response, I make them take photos, and they usually disappear overnight.  At Marco Island, they lingered a couple of days. I saw a crowd gathered round one of these, taking photos.  I spoke to one lady who was in tears.  Her daughter, who typically vacationed with her had died and she told me that the beach Angel felt like a message from her.

We spoke about Ryan and about her lost child.  Both of us were in tears.

Making my fairies and looking for heart shapes in nature began for me years ago.  I thought of them as little touches of magic to create or discover.  I liked leaving my shell sprites behind in gratitude.

Ryan used to be excited for me when we’d find a heart together out on our walks.  Or when I’d show him photos of a little Faye or heart.  Since he passed, I keep finding more and more hearts everywhere I go, and I love to think of him next to me when I make a discovery.  I can hear his voice saying, “That’s cool, Mom!”

The shapes and the fairy/angels have developed a deeper meaning for me now, with him gone.

And my tearful chat with another grieving mother has left me thinking about past creations and hoping that one could’ve given someone else a bit of cheer as they walked by it.

We tried a new beach this year, Indian Shores.  While it was relaxing and beautiful, it wasn’t the best location for picking up shells.  But there were tons of teensy ones that I gathered by the scoop full and sorted into dark and light to make a mosaic fairy portrait.

While the Sprite was crafted in a new way, the same heartfelt gratitude for my beach visit went into it.  I loved my short visit at Indian Shores with long walks each morning at the beach’s edge, and laughing with family as we sat in the sand.
This beach deserved a thank you fairy, no matter how hard it was to find shells.  I was determined.

North Carolina Riverbank Fairies

One morning in NC, I took the dogs for a walk along the stream that flowed through our campgrounds. The glimmer of sparkling, mica rocks caught my attention, so we paused to gather up fairy materials.

Molly has been going to puppy school and this fairy building adventure showed me just how well the training has paid off.  It isn’t easy to hold two leashes and arrange rocks into a little sprite at the same time. She made it easy, though. There was no pulling or impatience on her part at all.

And little, 6lb Dorothy was a doll herself.  I whipped up a fairy quickly and they didn’t get in the way one bit.

Then, Molly gave the fairy a “hug”.

While we found the scenery scrumptious, we were far from the only viewers.  This place was packed as you got up toward the higher spots.  The trails that led upward weren’t bad, but once you hit the start of the falls, it gets crowded as everyone stops to enjoy them.

Because of the Covid upticks, we wanted to avoid being in a mass of humanity, so we settled into a little rocky pool, not too high up where we had a private place to enjoy the river and still see the falls up in the distance.
