Our trip to Florida was extra special with the four grand fairies along.  It has been a very rough time for us lately and we wanted to have a big celebration for Khya’s 18th birthday to let the kids know how much we care.

A2BD04DD-72FF-4A5A-AA8D-0F9799E912D2Although it ended up being a bigger “bash” than I thought it would be…

We’d had the balcony doors open to enjoy the ocean, and beautiful weather, and I didn’t realize that the housekeeper had just shut it right before I ran out onto the patio.  Oops.

Instead of going out the door, I bounced off of it. I spent the rest of the week pretending it didn’t hurt, so I could enjoy the wonderful trip with my sweet girls.

Due to my carelessness, I didn’t swim much.  But I enjoyed lounging by the pool or ocean and watching the kids play from my one good eye.

And even with my sad, uneven vision, I had some gorgeous views!

When my son married Khya and Avahni’s mother, we took the girls to Florida as a welcome to the family trip.

Now that the marriage has ended, we wanted those two to know that they are our grand daughters forever, and we flew them off to Florida again to show them we are still family, no matter what.

I also wanted Dewdrop to have some happy memories of her last weeks with us.

She has moved back to North Carolina now, and will not be living with us in Kansas every other year.  Her daddy wanted a new beginning and left to live in the mountains.

This trip was my attempt to hold on to those that I loved, but I think my heart may be more beat up than my face.

An Angel for Amy

IMG_4875

Recently, a friend of my husband lost his daughter in a tragic accident. She was a young, first grade teacher who was beloved by many. We attended her Celebration of Life, and although I had never met her, it was an honor to be there and to hear all of the glowing stories about her life.  I was moved to create this angel for her by the winding, little creek behind the hotel we were staying at.

Her family had bracelets made to pass out, with Amy's motto on them, "Live, Laugh, Teach" along with "Live Like Amy."

Hoppy Easter!

While in Jekyll Island, Georgia, Guncle Randy and I made a quick trip to the beach on our way back to Jax and Guncleland.   The Easter workshop had been so jam packed with fun activities that we hadn’t had a chance to see the Atlantic til it was over.

It goes against every fiber of my being to be so close to the water and not get to visit it, so my baby bro made sure I had a walk on the beach to gather shells.

We found mostly broken ones, and just enough to make this bunny.  The bits and pieces seemed to come together just right to develop a shell rabbit.  At first, I was sad that the biggest broke as I picked it up, but once I assembled them, the break looked like the bunny was wearing a waistcoat!  Even better than I had planned.

I hope your holiday is a happy one.  When we take turns at the dinner table to tell everyone what we are “hoppy” about, I will have many things to share, including my trip to this beautiful beautiful island.

More from Florida, our big night out, and some crappy seashell fairies that made me happy

family, sea shell fairies, Sugarwings, Travel

IMG_3709

Our trip to Ft Lauderdale was excellent.  The hotel was at the beach and within walking distance to shops and great food.

Sugarwings liked to stop to browse on our way to dinner each night, and couldn't bypass anything this color.  Her new favorite color (and you know with little girls, "FAVORITE COLORS" are quite a big deal) is blue.  But she was drawn repeatedly to mint-ish green blue-ish aqua tones. Maybe it was the influence of the beach?

IMG_3774

Our nightly walk down the beach to dine was a highlight of a trip filled with perfect moments.

We were lucky with our hotel, and had a room in an ideal spot.  That happened in  Orlando too. Have you ever noticed that even if you are at a great hotel, if the room is remote, you aren't as happy with it? Long waits for elevators, struggles getting luggage to it, etc. In Ft Lauderdale, our room was near the stairs that led down one flight to the pool/lounge/breakfast/gym area that had an express elevator right to the beach access.  How convenient!

Plus we had a balcony with an ocean view, a major item for the criteria that makes a perfect room.

IMG_3729

In Orlando, our room at the Carribean beach Resort, was distant from the main building, but right by the pool, bus, and the snack bar.  Since at that part of the trip it was just the grand fairy and myself, I was glad to have a room near the snack bar. After she was asleep, I could step out of my door and refill my never ending Disney mug and not worry about her. Or get coffee in the morning while she dozed.

The location of a hotel room isn't always a choice when you travel, but I always try to get it targeted to the best spot I can.  It makes the trip even better for me if I can.

IMG_3818

Our days ran together in Ft Lauderdale, going from the pool to the ocean to the pool to our stroll down the beach to find seafood at night.  It was so relaxing and wonderful that we didn't want to even leave the resort area.

We had reservations one night at a City Club owned by the company my husband works for, and we practically had to drag ourselves out of our casual fog of beachiness to make ourselves go there for the evening.

IMG_3791

And we were so glad that we did!

The Tower Club was on the top floor of a downtown building and we had great views.

IMG_3813

And they gave us each a white rose. We carried the blooms with us as we walked around after dinner. Since we were checking out and moving on the next morning, Sugarwings found a couple of little girls to hand our flowers to.  I think she enjoyed sharing them as much as she enjoyed carrying them for a while.

IMG_3798

The food was even better than the view from the windows.

IMG_3809

But the dessert???

Oh my!

The chef sent us these cupcake topped sampler parfaits.

IMG_3819

I'm glad we had the chance to show our little wild child another side of life. To put on a pretty dress, take an Uber, and go to a top notch restaurant in the city.

IMG_3816

We all loved our special night.

IMG_3780

Every bit as much as our time on the beach.

Even though the shells I came across weren't the best I'd seen at other beaches, I was still able to cobble together a thank you fairy.

IMG_3785

Sugarwings scrounged up a few more shells for me and we made another one too.

While the fairies themselves were kind of crappy in comparison to other sprites we have crafted before, the joy behind them was no less. And as we walked away, my husband spotted a circle of kids around the fairies in the sand and talking about them.

Which makes them right up there on my list of the best fairies ever! I leave them in hopes of a child finding them, and as a thank you blessing to the beach.  I rarely see anyone notice them, so it was extra special this time to know that someone had.

A year of seashell fairies, beaches, and sea glass- BLESSINGS and THANKS

celebrations, fairies, family, sea shell fairies, Travel

IMG_1662

2018 was a year of oceans and celebrations for me, I took advantage of turning 60 by getting in as many celebratory trips as I could.  This heart wrapped flock of fairies, that says "Thanks" and "Blessed" sums it up for me.

IMG_3882

The first part of the year was a flurry of making plans, daydreaming over possibilities and destinations.  Looking at Disney resort and cruise options, perusing AIRBnB for getaways, talking to sisters and grand fairies about all of the what ifs and where tos, taking our time to get things just right.

IMG_1785

All of the details of planning itineraries, booking rooms, and thinking about the fun, was every bit as exciting as taking the trips. I had charts, I had lists, I had logged hours of looking at houses online and scrutinizing photos to see exactly how good the views were from the rooms in the pictures to make sure we had the perfect place to enjoy ourselves on our getaways.

The beach house where I met my lifelong friends at in St Augustine during April to celebrate our 60th birthdays together was so nice, that my sisters and I changed our plans for fall to stay in the same place for a few days then.  I found sea glass both times!

IMG_1668

Not just sea glass, but a shell that looked like a set of teeth.

IMG_1620 IMG_1633

Perfect for our Halloween/Hocus Pocus themed vacation!

That ideal view from the beach house we rented also inspired some artwork, and I spent an entire summer learning a paint pour technique.

It was a year of Disney Sister Trips too, while in Florida, I was able to sneak in magical trips to see the mouse.  First with sis, Terry, then with the four grand fairy sisters, then with Sissy and Bobbie!

IMG_4323

One of the very best memories of the year was waking up to see the sunrise at Cocoa Beach with Sugarwings and making a fairy on the sand together.

IMG_4317

How can you beat a day like that?

IMG_4576

Believe it or not, you can!  We headed to a Disney cruise ship that morning and sailed off to the Bahamas for my birthday and more beach time there.  I found un-ending sea glass at Atlantis, and strolled the beaches of Disney's private island with four grand fairies and my handsome husband.

IMG_0195

We had a quick trip to Florida later on, and I had very little time for wave watching, but did get to go for a walk along the marina in Ft Lauderdale, where I made a riverbank fairy.  I found one tiny shell for her to hold.

IMG_1640

In October, I found plenty of black shells to make a witch.

I'm thankful for my blessings.  My beloved husband, sons, grand fairies, sisses, bro, great friends, and wonderful trips together.  I think that the message I wrote in the sand will be my words for the upcoming year- "Blessings" and "Thanks"

And I wish a blessed New Year to you too.

PS- I am thrilled to announce that I will be teaching a class in Florida at Karen Hillman's Cozy Castle!!!!!!!!!

I'll be posting photos and more info soon.  I hope to see you in sunny Florida (as you can see, I adore Florida!!) for a day of friendship, creativity, and fun with my ruffly wings and romantically inspired autograph book projects

Seashell Fairies in St Augustine, and a Beach Blessings Angel in Cocoa Beach

family, sea shell fairies, Travel

IMG_1662

The beach house I rented with my life long buddies for our birthday get together was so nice, I rented it again with my sisses!

IMG_1643

And like I did in April, I also made a seashell fairy for each of us as a thank you to the beach.

IMG_1646

Each expresses the joy that I found while strolling along the sand.

IMG_1647

Aren't they happy little sprites?

FullSizeRender

And of course, I had to make a boy fairy for Guncle Randy, who joined us for some crafting.

IMG_1661

The shells were plentiful, the weather was beautiful, the company was ideal,

I had much to be thankful for.

IMG_1668

There was even sea glass! And this shell/tooth thing…

IMG_1620 IMG_1633

Which was perfect for a Winnifred Sanderson bit of fun.

IMG_1785

Staying on the Atlantic side, meant no sunsets over the water, but one morning, I was up in time to catch the tail end of a sunrise.  I was pretty impressed with myself for that.

IMG_1801

This was the balcony view, at our Cocoa beach place.  We hopped around and stayed at 4 different places in our ten day trip.

IMG_1909

Beach Place Guest House had some fantastic landscaping, it was just too bad that the red tide made it too hard to breathe for us to spend much time outside to enjoy the well sculpted views.

IMG_1794

The shells at Cocoa Beach were harder to come across. This was the total of what I found, but it was just enough for this one little girl.

I crafted a blessings angel for that beach, in hopes of healing the red tide.

IMG_1800

As well as a witch, just because I'd found these broken bits of shell and one looked like a jaw, so really wanted to make something with it.

Part two of my business trip to Florida and a Cocoa Beach Sea Shell Fairy

fairies, sea shell fairies, Travel

IMG_0230

I know, not my best fairy so far, but I had every bit as much fun making it as any of the others!

(Although I am a little sad about the dark, heavy wing that the poor thing has.  I don't know how high a guy can fly with a wing like that)

My trip to Cocoa Beach was more of a pit stop than a visit.  After leaving our luggage in Ft Lauderdale and having to drive from Orlando to fetch it, and right back again, I thought I needed to treat myself to a view of the ocean, no matter how quick the stop was.

These are shells that I gathered up in a few minutes while taking a break from the drive. It was only a slight detour, and worth the added time in the car.  Anytime I can wriggle my toes in the salt water, I'm pretty dang happy.

IMG_0217

I parked at Beach Place resort, to check it out.  My sisters and I are going to stay there in October and I wanted to see it in person to make sure it was where we wanted to be.

IMG_0216

Great choice!! It is lovely.  The manager was kind enough to let me hang out for a while and walk around to explore, then traipse along their beach.  I wasn't there long, we had dinner reservations in Orlando and now that I had the lost luggage, I was determined to put on some clean clothes and some makeup before going out.

IMG_0240

We were dining at the Citrus Club, downtown Orlando and there was no way I was going to be late for a fancy night on the town!

IMG_0244

The next morning, my husband had to be in Tampa, so we headed out nice and early. I was trying to plan what to do with my day while he worked, when it occurred to me that Weeki Wachee Springs was not that far away from where he would be.

And I'd been in the car so much already that I was in road trip mode anyway, what's another two hours?

So, I dropped him off and drove myself up north and went to watch the sirens of the seas.

IMG_0247

When I was about six years old, we visited here and I've tried to get back to see it again since then, but it has never worked out.

IMG_0254

I had time to watch one performance, and it just so happened to be "The Little Mermaid" which is a favorite story of mine, and of Sugarwings. I really missed her that day. I was having a great time being a tourist on my own, but she sure would have been a wonderful traveling companion that day.

This is a state park, it is $13 to get in, and once you are in, the boat rides, water park, and show are free.  The water park is spring fed, crystal clear water and I was wishing I had time to dive in and play mermaid myself.

IMG_0256

Before the performance started, they showed old movies of early shows from the 40s and 50s. The place has not changed much at all.  The mermaids might dress a little different, but it is basically what I remember.  Not that I was there in the 40s or 50s! My trip was probably about 1964.

I have to admit, I got a little teary watching it.  Thinking about going there with my mom and dad,  and how magical I thought it was as a child.  I didn't realize just how much this show had influenced my life, until being there brought it all back.  I'm a big believer in magic and mermaids, because as kiddo, I was shown that they are REAL.  I spent a life time pretending to be a mermaid under water, every time I'd go for a swim, I'd try a few fancy moves.

And that hasn't changed. I still love swimming like a mermaid in swimming pools with my grand kids.

A stroll along the Ft Lauderdale Riverwalk and a River Bank Fairy

sea shell fairies, Travel

IMG_0181

Recently, my husband had some business to do in Florida and I invited myself to tag along.  In my mind, I would be knee deep in waves and walking along the beach the whole visit.  But, that isn't quite how a work trip goes.  I needed to fit my schedule to his and he was downtown most of the time.   I had the morning to myself while he slaved away, and since I've never been much for cities, and I decided to hop over to the ocean for a short visit.

IMG_0179

But as I talked to the hotel valet, I noticed a sign that said Riverwalk and was intrigued.

IMG_0180

So I thought I'd treat myself to a bit of culture instead of my typical beach bum style tourism, and I explored the area.  Surprisingly, it was shady and there was a nice breeze. Not at all what I expected from downtown in a large, Floridian city.

And even though I was dressed for a walk on the sand, I was glad that I'd changed my mind at the last minute.

IMG_0187

It was a pleasant change of pace for me, and I was feeling quite urban as I appreciated the views.

IMG_0188

I fit nicely into upscale settings.

But I was starting to feel a missed opportunity to make a beach sprite.

IMG_0199

Then, I saw a twisted bit of bark that reminded me of a fairy jumping for joy on the sidewalk, and right next to it, a bundle of pink blossoms. I thought those flowers would make a fine, little dress, and sat my 60 year old butt right down in the middle of that schmancy, urban walkway and made myself happy by turing that bit of bark into a fey creature.

IMG_0195

All she needed was some leaves as wings and a head, which were pretty quick to find.  My only problem was wind, this girl wanted to float off on the breeze, a problem that I've never had with shells.

I love making little sprites out of nature and when I do, I feel like I am showing appreciation for the beauty around me.  It has almost become a compulsion to make these, I don't feel like I am on vacation without leaving one as a thank you.

IMG_0200

Afterwards, did more city strolling and stopped at some shops.  The area was more high dollar than I am used to, but these sandals were 90% off and just waiting for me to slip them on. Aren't they gorgeously gaudy?  Yum.

IMG_0201

Our hotel was on the Riverwalk, and was such a pretty place to stay.  It was an old, Spanish style place and we had a big corner suite with a balcony overlooking the shopping district.  I could get used to such nice accommodations, even without the beach view that I usually go for on trips!

IMG_0212

We made it to the beach for a fresh seafood lunch before driving to the next stop on his schedule, Orlando.  I hated to leave Ft. Lauderdale so soon, but was glad to have some time to explore some things I might not have gone looking for normally.

Little did I know that I would be right back in Ft Lauderdale again the very next day!

I'm afraid that when the valet at the hotel loaded our car, we missed a bag.

After a whirlwind trip to Macy's to find my husband more work clothes for the next day, we went out for dinner with some of his business colleagues even though I was still dressed for my interrupted trip to the beach that morning.  No makeup, shorts, and hat hair.

And in the morning, I drove back south, gathered up the bag, and then headed north again, taking the scenic route back (7 hours of car time).   It was a long, but interesting day.  Not the day I thought I'd have, but a good one never the less.

An early morning Cocoa Beach Sea Shell Fairy

celebrations, fairies, sea shell fairies, Sugarwings, Travel

IMG_4317

We arrived in Cocoa Beach the night before our cruise with big plans for an afternoon on the beach, which got changed by a late flight and lost luggage…. But that is a whole other story.

Our flight was late, yet still in time for a sunset dinner on the pier, and a quick trip to the touristy, swimsuit store nearby. Then my husband took the girls swimming while I ran to Target before it closed, to nab some underwear and toiletries.

IMG_4297

Sugarwings woke up Friday morning to see the sunrise, and the two of us snuck out for an early walk along the water while the others slept in.

IMG_4294

She was just too excited to waste a moment of beach time.  And I was antsy about the lost luggage, and wanted to check on it.

Yep, it was there! It was delivered to the front desk of the hotel at 5am. Whew, what a relief, I'd only got enough at Target to get us through the morning, not enough for a 3 day cruise.

Plus, it contained our Pirate costumes! How could we go on the ship without those???

IMG_4321

There is something very special about being out on the shore early before the crowds. And the shells were plentiful.  Often, it takes me a full week's vacation to find the right pieces to leave a sprite on the beach, but we were lucky in finding all we needed in mere minutes at Coco.

Snapseed3

Fairies are even more meaningful to me, when I have Sugarwings as a helper.

IMG_4299

It was a beautiful start to a beautiful weekend!

A Caribbean Sea Shell Grammy Fairy

celebrations, sea shell fairies, Travel

IMG_44712

As I said, we LOVED our Disney Cruise.  It was a short one, three nights. We stopped at the Bahamas and Disney's private island.

IMG_4576

There was a breathtaking amount of sea glass on the beach at Nassau! Trouble was, it wasn't the old, really cool stuff, it was more of the beer bottle variety.  I still managed to find a few bits that were nice, and while they are not my favorite kind of beach glass, they were still a thrill to hunt for.  I also found lots that I considered dangerous and sharp, so picked those up too, and threw them away to save bare feet.

Snapseed (5)2

And what a funny shell I found to make this Grammy Fairy's face. Goofy, huh? Or creepy?

IMG_4479

This looks like a postcard, doesn't it?  Our whole weekend looked like we lived inside a vacation postcard. It was beautiful.

IMG_4476

Disney is all about the layout and design. Every corner is a photo op.

IMG_4467

The island had an ideal beach for little ones, with a barrier to keep it safe and calm. I dressed them in swim shirts to keep off the sun, and that worked well to prevent sunburns and also helped me find them in the water. Those shirts stood out nicely and I was able to keep an eye on them.  But, the beach itself wasn't all that crowded, so it wasn't hard to find them at a glance.

We were comfy, relaxed, and had perfect weather as well as a perfect day.
