Cuff tutorial
The cuff bracelet tutorial I promised is up and running. There is a button on my side bar to click on for more info, or click here.

Its a $6 class.

IMG_5479

The class is online, in blog form, and holds written instructions lots of photos of the steps that I use to make my own cuffs.

(why on earth don't I ever think of polishing my nails before I do one of these???)

Cuff button

Here is a button for the class if you'd like one.

IMG_4865
Its up and running, with no end date.  So you can refer back to the blog in the future for a refresher.

IMG_5501

I've also made up some kits for sale. You can find them in my Boutique, on this page.

The tutorial is included in the kit price.

IMG_5502

There are a few kits listed and I am waiting on a bulk order of the aluminum cuffs to make up a few more. For now, I have the 1-1/2" size, next week I'll also have the 1" cuffs.  Today I found some toasty, cream cotton velvet too, won't that be pretty?

IMG_2902
And if you aren't in the mood to make your own, I have listed a few that I made myself too.

You can find some here, and some in the Etsy shop, here too. (Yay, I got it reopened! And have big plans to restock it for the holidays)

I've got another half dozen cuffs to photograph and list, but today was busy with putting packages together. I've been in bed with a cruel stomach bug all week and haven't had a chance to get my orders filled.  But if you are waiting for a package from me, thanks for your patience, its on its way now!

IMG_5375
Little Dew Drop and the rest of these photos don't have anything to do with the stomach bug, I figured they were much prettier pictures than anything along the lines of what I was talking about. Its been a rough week, but with a trip to the ER for fluids to revive me, I am on the mend.

Seems like the worst part of being sick (beyond losing a week of work, when I am trying to fill my shop for the holidays) is finally crawling out of my dark, depressing, sick room to find the house a mess. Now, I'm not blaming my sweet husband, who spent the night sitting up in a stiff chair at the ER while my veins were pumped full of that wonderful IV nectar that made me better, and who watched Sugarwings on his own while I was out of it.

IMG_5528
He was just great. He was helpful, he was loving.

But he just doesn't notice messes.

I honestly think he doesn't see them.

So, when I finally was able to get up on two legs and left the bedroom, instead of just crawling from the bed to the bathroom, I was a bit down to see how things had piled up around the cottage.

But the worst part was that I passed the bug on to him and to Ryan and then had to take care of them, while I was still feeling like  noodle legged mush myself.  Not to mention taking over the care of an energetic Sugarwings for the night.

IMG_2875
The two girls were already exposed to the bug last week when their Daddy and his Gypsy were sick, and haven't caught it yet. I'm hoping they don't. Its awful. I feel guilty enough that the guys picked it up while bringing me juice. They were very brave and are paying for it now. So, I'm off to go check on my menfolk, and see if they need a refill.

I hope all is well at your house.  WINTER IS COMING (that Game of Thrones quote stays with me) and so are the bugs. Dang, I miss the summer bugs, as much as I hate mosquitos, they are better than the stomach flu!

Patsy the Monarch Butterfly

celebrations, family, Sugarwings

IMG_2795
Lawrence is a great place to live.  We love it here for so many reasons. One is Pendleton's Farm, where you can spend an entire afternoon playing with butterflies, petting horses, going on a hayride, and tagging and releasing Monarch Butterflies. All for FREE.

(there is great shopping too, we always buy some fresh veggies, or local made jams while there so they can stay in business and we can keep coming back)

IMG_2782
There is a butterfly garden that is nurtured all summer, then the flittery little bugs are tagged by guests, and taken outdoors to float away.  Sugarwings met a butterfly named Patsy that she released into the wild.

IMG_2810
There is a lot of fun, farmy activities there, like a corn bin to waller in, a tricycle dirt bike track (yes, I raced a trike too), a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, and other stuff we didn't even get to because the corn was so much fun.

A local winery was doing tastings and there were samples of fresh goat cheese too.

IMG_2814
Yes, I tried the wines.  But that isn't why I jumped in the corn bin.

I'm just a giddy grammy, wine or not.

Happy Grandparent’s Day!

celebrations, family, Sugarwings

IMG_2722
Did you have a wonderful Grandparent's Day yesterday?  Its one of the biggest, most important holidays of the year, I hope that you celebrated it big time!!

IMG_2725
We were invited by Sugarwing's school to come in for a grandfolk's breakfast and got to stay and play a while afterwards.

We all got dressed up for the event, my husband insisted on wearing a jacket.  I always nag at him to never wear clothes that have to be drycleaned when he is not at work. But I am cheap, so personally I don't own a single thing that needs to be drycleaned. Most of my clothes are from the thrift store or a clearance rack, it was be silly to pay more to clean them than I did to buy them.

But he was right, it was an important occaision for our little fairy and she enjoyed helping us pick out just the right outfits this morning before school. Its nice to have  a reason to foof up a bit. I've been wearing my paintin duds every day lately, whether I'm doing any of the remodel work or not.

IMG_2734
This is actually the very first time we have celebrated this day. It was so nice of the school to do something like this, and there was a huge turn out.  The parking lot was filled, and overflowed onto the streets.  The rooms were packed with doting grandparents wearing dopey smiles as their little ones gave them hand made cards and sang songs to us.

Yep, a  beautiful day.

PS- the link to the winner of our craft day giveaway was not correct. Sorry, here it is again. You'd love to see Maggie's illustrations, so please check her out.

A fine, fab, fall day

Kitchen remodel, Sugarwings

IMG_4555
The other day, Sugarwings had to stay home from school because she'd had a fever and sore throat the day before. So, I had planned a day of movies (we never get tired of watching Nanny McPhee part one and two back to back) and all fruit popsicles. But when we woke up, she was feeling fine as can be, and the sun was calling us to go outdoors. What a gorgeous fall day.

IMG_4557
Perfect for a mini tea party in the gazebo.

IMG_4549
With a very special guest who had his ears styled into a top knot just for the occasion, so he would match his hostess.

IMG_4546
She was feeling so good and having such fun that I thought I'd tackle a few projects outdoors while she played with the new teaparty set that I found at a garage sale over the weekend.  Isn't it cute? I like that the cups are actually cup sized, not tiny.  And its tin, so is sturdy. Plus ROSES! The best part.  Oh, and only $2 for the whole set.  The lady I bought it from was in her 60s and said it was hers as a child.

IMG_4560
These tins were all power washed and ready to prime and paint, but the weather had been bad and I'd been busy. I was afraid that I would have to wait for them to be installed and they would have been much harder to paint on the ceiling than on the ground.

IMG_4563
So, I spread them out all around the courtyard, put an extension pole on my roller and coated them with bonding primer (Glidden Gripper) and Behr pure white paint.

IMG_4564
There were a lot of them.  And it was hard to keep rocks and leaves out of my roller.

IMG_4566
So, I convinced Sugarwings to come over to the front yard and play there while I worked on the rest of them in the garage.  She was happy to do it, we had a companionable day, with chatting and keeping each other company while we hung out and both did our own thing.  She really wanted to help paint, and normally I would have let her, but the edges of the tins were just too sharp for her to be near.

Surprisingly, she accepted my answer and didn't insist on getting her own brush anyway. She can be quite determined about helping me in anything I can do. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever tried to stop her before. Usually she is my assistant in all projects when she is around.

IMG_4616
These tins will cover the new kitchen/dining area ceiling.  The rooms were two different heights and by using the tin, we will cammoflage that problem.  It could have been a complicated dry wall job to make the ceilings the same height, and not nearly as pretty as vintage tin.

I've not decided if I will glaze over the white paint of the tins after they are hung or not. I'll see how they look.  I know they will need a lot of touch up work after being installed, but touch ups over head are easier than painting it from scratch up there.

IMG_4558
After painting 48 tins, I also took all the floor grates outside and sprayed them with primer/paint in one.  Its a coppery color that will blend in with the wooden floors better.  I had them ivory before, to go with the tile.

IMG_4614
Of course, I still don't know what color the floor will end up, I probably should have waited to see how it looked once it was stained before I painted the grates to match. But, I like this coppery look, and think it will blend in nicely however the floor turns out.

IMG_4568 So far, I'm thrilled with it. It has a rustic, distressed look that is perfect for this house. Like its been here forever.  Because it was here forever, just buried under about 6 layers over the years.

IMG_4567
There are still gaps to fill and more sanding to do, but I like the patch work style of the different sized boards. What I didn't like, were some giant, black stains here and there. I spent hours sanding those out and bleaching the wood.  The contractor and his guys are doing the main part of the job and doing it well, but I think a house needs someone who loves it to make sure the details are just right, don't you?

To get out the big black blobs, I sanded a while, then used a paint brush to apply bleach only to the dark areas and keep it off the edges as much as possible. Then, I laid a towel over it for a few hours. After that lightened it a bit, I sanded some more, then I sanded some more. After that, I sanded some more.

It worked!

IMG_4518 Have you ever remodeled an old house? If so, you probably know that one thing leads to another… There was a vent in the roof that leaks, a floor that was sinking, and the woodstove area ended up having to be redone. The stove had set on a brick platfrom, but they had to rip out the bricks to get to the flooring underneath.

IMG_4523
The solution was so much better than what we started with!  The guys cut out the floor, and are going to lay tile so that it is inset into the wood floor. No more tripping over the raised bricks!

IMG_4618

This picture shows the underbelly of the cottage.  Its more of a cellar than a basement. It would take quite a tornado to get me down there.  Ugh. I go there as rarely as possible, any usually it is only to flip a fuse, change a furnace filter, or set a mouse trap.

I think blowing away in a storm might just be preferable to spending time in that dank hole.

IMG_4524
Overall, the room is coming along smoothly. It helps to have the world's best contractor.  What a great guy to work with!  I'm a bit of a serial remodeler and a conniseur of contractors. I've learned that most builder types think my ideas stink and they just want to rip stuff out and replace it with something new, clean and modern.

Which explains why we had never tried to restore the old floors beneath the layers before. As it had been explained to me by other guys, it was going to be about impossible to do, and would never look right. I let them talk me out of it.

Well, its been a lot of labor and wasn't easy, but was far from impossible and I like the look it is creating.

IMG_4598

This contractor, Linc Mortenson, has listened to my ideas and expanded on them. He acts like he is honestly interested in what I have to say and tells me about other old houses he has redone.  Having a guy who has worked on and understands old houses makes a big difference. He also is reasonable and doesn't suggest outrageous budget busting plans, either. He has worked with me on reusing existing materials and has been nice about using 150 year old tin instead of insisting on the newer stuff which would be much easier to install. (and he is coming in under budget on the project so far!!)

IMG_4613

Plus, he's a cutey.  That doesn't hurt at all.  His crew is too.  A friend came to visit and see what was going on with the work, and as soon as she got home she texted me that she wanted this crew to come and rip out the wall in her kitchen next, just so she could watch them.

But best of all, the work is going QUICKLY.  Less than 3 weeks from rip out to this point.

A 5 year old with a crow bar

Kitchen remodel, Sugarwings

IMG_4395 Last week, my time was mostly spent getting ready for the remodelling project.  The first step was to haul all of my Rubbermaid tubs out of the garage and give them a bath. Luckily I have plenty of them, every time Home Depot would have a sale and they'd go below $4, I'd buy a few.

I used them for my antique business and for my faux finish/mural biz.  These things are great for hauling supplies and paint to jobs, and I never worked on walls in someones home without my open can of paint sitting down inside a tub and my roller pan on the lid.   It just gave me a little peace of mind, to know that I wasn't going to spill onto someones floor, since I am ultra clumsy and spilling was a big possibility.

These tubs ended up being the PERFECT amount for my stuff in the kitchen and dining room! Each is full and stacked in the living room now.  I've decided that my husband just might have a point, I probably do have too  much stuff.

On the other hand, I have the same amount of stuff as a I do tubs.  It could be worse.

IMG_4388 Right before packing it all up, we had some guests, family came in town to visit for the weekend. This is Grandma Joan, her sis, Ethel with my oldest boy, Ryan.

For some reason, I don't show many pictures of him, do I? I should, he's adorable

Since I had guests coming, I gave the house a much needed thorough cleaning.  I probably wouldn't have bothered if they weren't coming, I'd have told myself that it was all just being ripped up anyway, why bother? But, I'm so glad that I started with a clean house, it made the packing just kind of feel better as I was doing it.

IMG_4374 While the company was still here, the contractor sent his guys out for a little excavation under the tile to see if we were going to be able to save the old floors way down under years of layers.

Looks like good news!  The floors seem to be there, we'll have to see what they find as they rip out the rest of the layers around the 3 rooms. They think that the dining room is 5" boards, the kitchen is 3" boards and the mud room area is 9" and those head a different direction than the other two.

That didn't bother me, I think it could be very interesting layout. I've got my fingers crossed that all are salvageable.

IMG_4413
The ceilings will be covered in un-matching tins, so why should the floor match?

All the tins will be painted the same, and a consistent pattern will be used around the perimeter of the room, with something different in the middle.  I think I'll prime them white and glaze them with a cafe au laite color.   I like gray, too… they might have a gray wash instead of creamy coffee.

I haven't decided on the floor finish yet. I have  to see it all together and sanded down. It might need painted if too much patching happens.  I'd prefer just a clear coat with natural wood showing through, but when you have an old house, you have to be prepared for what you want to not be what you get when you start ripping into it.

IMG_4427

Along with the floor, this dividing wall will be removed.

IMG_4434
I had Sugarwings a couple of days this week, and that big, empty, soon to be trashed wall was just way too tempting for us.

We decided to get out the crayons and chalk and give the wall a good send off.

IMG_4443
Soon, we had drawn all over the floor too.

IMG_4444
Then, we decided to add texture to our art with a hammer.

IMG_4436
But things really got fun when we pulled out the crowbar.

Anybody need a demolition specialist? This one works for pink marshmallows.

Sugarwings first flea market

antiques/junking, collections, flowers, Sugarwings

IMG_4342
I want to thank all of you for your concern and caring about Sugarwing's school situation. It broke my heart to see our little fairy so down, she is usually such a sparkling soul. But, I think we are on track now in finding her the right place.  She only turned five 2 days before school started, so was the littlest kid there, and frankly, she is not always listening to what people are telling her anyway, so just wasn't ready to listen to a teacher.

It helped to hear all of your stories and advice. It sounds like 5 is often too young to start school, and waiting a year helped a lot of your little ones.

Since she has been out of school for a bit, we've had some good days together. I'd planned on going with Beth to the big Sparks and White Cloud flea that we love so much, but I ended up with this kiddo instead, so had to cancel.

But- I really really really needed a junk day.  And not just because it sounded fun, but because I had to scrounge up some more ceiling tins for our kitchen remodel. This was a mission with a purpose!

And I figured that this girl is going to be raised around junk, she needed to learn about how to go about finding and appreciating the stuff.   So, I packed her up, rented a movie to put in her Pink Princess Computer (a portable DVD player),filled a bag of snacks, loaded my flea mkt cart, and we hit the road.

Sadly, the snacks and the DVD player didn't mix well.  If you spill a box of Chocolate milk into your Pink Princess Computer, its pretty much done for.  (this is the same week that our home DVD player bit the dust too. Along with our vacuum cleaner, toilet, modem, home phone, AND our boat has been checked out for the dozenth time by a mechanic, but still died on the lake and had to be towed, then was in a wreck with the towing boat, so I wasn't surprised to see her DVD player break)

IMG_4333
When we pulled up to Sparks and got out to shop, she wanted to know where the Bug Store was. I did say, "flea market,"  right?

She soon found some non-bug and flea related items to enjoy. Like this shopping cart for $1.  She insisted that it should be pulled behind her like I pulled my basket.

IMG_4359

Then, she found some bugs, and that made her happy too.  This time of year, cicadas are plentiful.  You don't even have to make a special trip to the market to get them.

IMG_4349
This fairy certainly has bargaining skills.  She found a disco night light in rainbow colors that was marked $15, held up $3 and the lady smiled and said sure.  Another guy gave her 3 plastic ponies for $1, and everywhere else people were giving her stuff. Including free french fries from a food cart, beads to wear, and this great light up butterfly magic wand.

I could get some lessons from her!  Now, if only I could train her to find hats and bargain the prices down on them.

We also ran into my friend, Gwen, who runs Bottom's Up, one of the best antique sales around.  She gave Sugarwings a pile of flyers to pass out and that kid was determined that anyone within 20 feet of her HAD to take one.  She added a quick spin, put her backside in the air and said "bottoms up!" each time, too. I had to convince her that it wasn't necessary to flip up her skirt while doing that after the first time.

IMG_2649

This was a trip where I didn't expect to do much shopping. It would be a quick trip down the aisles with my eyes out for tin to redo my kitchen ceiling.

But what to my wandering eyes did appear?? Treasures galore and things I hold dear! (uhm, she and I talk in rhyme sometimes)

IMG_2650
I found a few hats, not many, but was glad to glom onto them. They were bonus hats. I didn't expect to have any luck in this department at all.

IMG_2648
But the best surprise was that she was having so much fun sitting in the dirt next to me, playing with her bug buddies and new toys, that I had plenty of time to sift through old jewels.  There are wonderous treasures to be found there, if you have the patience to look through the ucky stuff too. Beth always gets tired of waiting for me, I could park myself in front of a jewel bucket for an hour, and she is ready to move on. Sugarwings was happy to let the bugs ride on her plastic ponies while I sifted jewels. Next time I go, I'll pack a bag of bugs for Beth. I'm sure that will make her happy.

And later, I ran into a friend who is an ex-kindergarten teacher and she took my little one for a walk while I shopped in her booth and made a ceiling tin deal with her husband.

We didn't stay long, and we probably spent more time sitting down and playing than walking around and shopping, but I'd call her first flea market a big success.  She was wheeling and dealing with the best of them, we both found some beloved items, and we had lots and lots of time for rhyming all the way home since the DVD player broke.

ps-Please leave a comment on the previous post if you want a chance to win this Craft Day Giveaway pack from me, Beth, and Mary!

Some of the flowers in the pack are from this flea market day.

Please forgive me for not answering comments this week, our construction is beginning! I guess this phase is more de-construction, the kitchen gets ripped out before it gets put back.

PS again- a photo of my living room was featured on the HGTV site! how nice!

Welcome back??

family, Sugarwings

  IMG_4304

This is the scene that greeted Sugarwings and I the other day when we woke up.

The raccoons are back!

They will not give up on trying to steal this guy's food, and knocked over everything on my porch trying to get to through the window.  They also left me the empty cat food jug, that they had stolen last week. I guess they brought it back to taunt me with it.

IMG_4289
Sugarwings has a theory that they want to get into the house and get her toys.  So, she brought me a cooler with a Barbie in it and asked me to write a note for her.  Not exactly how I figured we'd get rid of the coons, but I thought it was worth a try.

(I'm leaning more towards something a bit more vicious myself)

IMG_4303
She thought that if she shared one of her special Barbies with the raccoon's babies, they would not try to get in our house.

The logic of a 5 year old is pretty special too.

I hope you are having a good Labor Day weekend! I'll have a giveaway for you this week, a little something from the CraftDay Club, so please check back for details.

Sweet babies

antiques/junking, dogs, Dorkies (Yorkshire Terrriers), family, Mayara, Sugarwings

  IMG_4184

Miss Pixie Pie, is now a big sis!  She has a cuddly little brother at her house now.  We got over to see him a few days ago and I was able to get some snuggles. There is nothing on earth like holding a new born baby, is there?

IMG_4201
We took the big sister home with us for a while to play with her cousin and give her parents a little break. The girls spent a lot of the evening just filling water cans.  Its good to have well water, and not worry about water bills,  water is such easy entertainment for kids this age.

Afterwards, they were a little shivery, so I fixed them hot cocoa.  Not something we have very often in the summertime, so they were both pretty excited to get some.  It was fun to have hot chocolate in the summer in the same way it is to have pancakes for supper sometimes.

IMG_4190
After getting dry and warm, they helped me make dinner.  I like to give the kids a hunk of bread dough and some bowls of cheese and broccoli for them to create their own bread sticks.  Our fairy grand kid can play with dough for so long, we almost don't get it into the oven in time to have it done for supper. Pixie Pie was a bit more efficient than her cousin, she got hers done and ready to pop into the oven right away, so I just gave her more and kept her going on it.  That kid doesn't mess around, she got them all whipped up in no time, while Sugarwings was still reconstructing the shape of her dough ball for the dozenth time.

Speaking of cooking, my gift for the new mom and dad might seem a bit odd, but instead of buying baby clothes or toys, I like to pack up a big bag full of convenience items.  Paper plates, cups, plastic forks, etc. to hopefully save them some time while they are caring for the new baby.  Its a hectic time, and its not always easy to get dishes done while caring for a newborn.

IMG_4105
Cause watching a little one can sure wear you out!

IMG_4098

Earlier in the week, we were lucky enough to have BOTH grands over for the night.  Mayara is just getting big enough to come over and spend some time, now that her  mommy is not nursing as much.    She was so sweet. If I held up her dolly, and ask her to give it some love, she'd plant a big ole slobbery kiss on its head.

IMG_4155 These girls are all pretty sweet too, I splurged big time and took them to the groomers for a make over, complete with matching bows.

IMG_4165 Our neighbor, Holden thought they looked lovely.

IMG_4219

Even with all the cute babies around here, I've been managing to get things done. I went to a flea mkt with Mary, and met up with Beth who was selling there.  As sweet as all the kids are, it was pretty durn nice to have a grown up day with junking!

By the way, Mary is hosting her first swap and its a doozy.  Its for glue book pages, and she'll provide the book covers, ring binders, plus an ephemera pack to get you started on making your book grow with more art when you get it back.

IMG_4227
Our remodelling project has been finalized too.

IMG_4230
Its good to finally get all of that settled and mark a date on the calender to start it.

IMG_4225 Although, that means, that I have to start packing up my kitchen.  Ugh.

IMG_4234
On the other hand, it means that I get to pick out flooring and shop for something to build into a kitchen island.  I know what I want, now I just need to find it.

IMG_4249
I've been adding some things to the Boutique over the weekend, and a few to the long neglected Etsy shop too.

IMG_4222
I  hope to add more, but then I always say that, don't I?

This weekend we have family in town to visit, and will be going to one of our faves, the Renfest.  After that, I have 3 days to get everything in my kitchen and dining room packed up and out of the room so the work can begin.  So, who knows if I'll get more added to the shop. Maybe after the packing up is done.

IMG_4239
I'll have more additions to the shop to show you in the next post, this one has run on long enough.

Sugarwings 5th birthday

celebrations, fairies, family, Food and Drink, parties, Sugarwings

IMG_3878
Thanks for your interest in photo editing. I know I said my next post would be more tips and tricks, but I wanted to show you pictures from Sugarwing's birthday party first.  The soft color editing tips will be on Friday instead.

IMG_3894
We had quite a week with our fairy child.  We took the entire bunch of 7 grands and their parents to a water park in Kansas City on Thursday to celebrate a few of the birthdays, then my husband and I snuck our little one away for a weekend at a Holiday Inn water park (we had a free Priority Club room to use) and a day at the zoo in KC too.

She's pretty proud of her two wrist bands from the parks and refuses to take them off.

IMG_3880
She also had a sleepover with me on Sunday night, and since I got to have her most of Monday, we decided to throw a party.  A fairy tea party luncheon with Pixie Pie.

We got up early on Monday morning and started baking cupcakes, then made mini pizzas by rolling out the dough and cutting it with a star shaped cookie cutter.  The stars were topped with Trader Joe's marinara sauce, cheese, a broccoli nose, red pepper slice smile, and green pepper eyes.

I'd show you photos, but when a soon to be 5 year old works the cookie cutter and makes the faces, they aren't always recognizable as smiling stars.  They just kind of looked like pizza blobs. But she loved them anyway.

IMG_3888 Next, we set the table with pretty dishes and linens, got the tea pots out, and put on our fairy dress up gear.

It wasn't quite time for Pixie Pie to arrive, but Sugarwings was pretty excited and wanted to sit at the table and wait there for her.

Waiting can be the hardest part.

IMG_3905
We were trying something new that day, some all natural rock candy sugar. It made the tea even more fun to stir.

  IMG_3908

When her cousin arrived, the girls scampered up the stairs to get her all decked out in her fairy wear too.

I think that Sugarwings is wearing my all time favorite selections in this picture.  She layered herself in multiple skirts and a lady bug costume, along with great ruby slippers from Aunt Sissy.  Of course, the water park wrist bands just make the outfit.

Did you notice that Pixie Pie is soon to be a big sister? Her mom is due any minute, and is expecting a boy.  I hope he likes tea parties.

IMG_3951
After lunch, I turned them loose with cupcakes, icing tubes, and sprinkles and let them go.  It quickly became Sprinkle Palooza, we were knee deep in tiny, tasty, tidbits that made crunchy sounds when we walked through the kitchen.

IMG_3954
When I was a young mother, I never let my poor boys go wild with the sprinkles like this.  I was probably on too tight of a budget to allow such waste and on too tight of a schedule to clean up the mess.  And too tightly wound myself to be able to relax and just enjoy the show of sprinkles and icing flying everywhere.

Its so nice to be a grammy. I can't imagine anything better.  I wish I'd been as happy go lucky with my sons as I am with these girls.  I have to say, all the arthritis and creakiness and backaches and wrinkles are worth it. Getting older is getting better.  I love being a little old lady.

Oh, the boys and I had fun when they were little, of course. I was the master of finding free things to do. If there was a grocery store grand opening, we were first in line to get a balloon and free hot dog and play any carnival games they offered.  We hiked, we swam, we pinched pennies and saved up to have special treats.  But life was harder then, I was a single mom with three jobs for a while, times were tight, time was scarce and money even more so.  I spent more time worrying than playing and didn't realize how fast it would all zoom by.

But with Sugarwings, I'm old enough to know how precious and limited these times are.

Sugarwings might be a bit spoiled by all she gets to do and the places she gets to go, but she doesn't act like it, she is the most appreciative kid around.  She always has a big smile and an "oh my goodness" or "thank you, Grammy!!!", or a "thats sooooo cuuuute" ready whenever we do something special. And she flings herself at us with unlimited joy and wraps us in her arms.  Her middle name is Joy and it is perfect for her. She overflows with it.

And we still are careful about spending, all of her dress up clothes are from garage sales and goodwill stores.  We buy sprinkles by the truckload, but mostly with 40% off coupons at Michael's.

She might be a bit over indulged by grand parents who are smitten with her, but honestly, I think that I am the one being indulged, not her.  I love every minute of it.

Its hard to believe she is five now.  I've been invited to walk to school with her on her first day tomorrow with all of the rest of the family, and I'm just not sure that I can do it.  I might just sob thinking about how fast she is growing up.

But I also can't wait to go through each and every stage of it all with her.  Today she was planning her future wedding. She will either marry a blue M&M or Prince Navine.  I sure hope that when that day comes, I get to help design and set up her reception.  And I also hope that we are still best friends then like we are now.  Because it will be here before I know it, I can almost hear those wedding bells.
