Thoughts on blogging

CA Disney 2012 436
Lately, its been really hard for me to get back in the swing of things.  I'm so out of my normal routine that I can't seem to find my way back into it.

CA Disney 2012 447
Its been a LONG time since I've taken care of my Boutique, and that poor little neglected Etsy shop… the poor thing, it is just going to whither up and die if I don't add something soon.

CA Disney 2012 202
For the whole month of April, I was working on getting things set up for Birdsong, then had the event itself and my double the fun vacation at Tiffany's then onto Disney with the grand fairy.

CA Disney 2012 211
Since that, I've limped back into production slowly, and not so surely.  My days have been more catch up than getting ahead.  I'm happy to say that I finally made something new, at a fun craft day with Beth a few days ago, and I actually listed some supplies in the Boutique.

These are new buckles that I oxidized to create a vintage looking patina on.

For sale 512 068
I've done the same with some pink rhinestone chain.

For sale 512 065
And some aurora borealis chain too.  Its not much, I really need to get photos of the piles of stuff waiting to be sold posted onto the site.

But honestly, I've been just puttering my way through the weeks, not getting a lot done. Mostly goofing off stuff, like I think I'm still on vacation. We've gone to the zoo, had tea parties, I've done yard work, edited trip pictures, messed around with rearranging the studio, wrote in my blog, visited friends, sat in the yard and watched the new chickens, just fun little things.

My blog is supposedly "work" for me.  Its how I sell things. But, if I don't have things to sell, its not really working, its just hanging out!

CA Disney 2012 181

Which brings me to this- my buddy, Carol, gave a talk at Tiffanys.  She spoke about blogging, business, and related topics.

Here are some things that came up in the interesting discussion with the crowd.  Is blogging dead? Do people even read them any more?

If you blog, should it be all business? Some thought posts should be direct and short, and stick to a subject. That people only cared about photos, or only about Pinterest, not blogs.  But where do you get the photos for Pinterest if there are no blogs, I wonder?

Others said they hate blogs that try to push shopping on you.  That they feel used if a blog is just used for self promotion.

The way I see it, if I don't use my blog to sell some stuff here and there, I have no excuse to keep one and will have to get a (god forbid) REAL job (gasp!).

Even though I show photos of whats new in the  shop (when I get off my behind and add something to the shop, that is), I try not to cram it down the reader's throat. And its hard for me to stick to just business, although I think my family would prefer that I did.  Or to keep it short and simple.

What do you look for in a blog?

Do you think blogs are on their way out?

How do you read them, if you do- Facebook, Googlereader?

The best part of going to these art events, like Tiffanys, is the people.

Great people, great friends. I might only see them randomly at various arty weekends, but we pick right up where we left off and continue the fun that started at the last party.

CA Disney 2012 132

I've met some people who I consider very close friends, not just acquaintances or work friends at these places.

CA Disney 2012 188

I have great memories of this latest trip, and many pretty pictures to show you.  But since the people I meet there mean so much to me, this post has not come easy.

CA Disney 2012 174
I share more than laughs with these ladies.  I care about them.  And I cherish our times together.

CA Disney 2012 146
So I don't want to be flip and go on and on about how wonderful it all was.

Believe me, it was WONDERFUL, Kim is an over the top, talented hostess who attends to every detail.  The teachers and classes were lovely. The decor amazing. The women were the best.

CA Disney 2012 153

But there was also heart break this time.

CA Disney 2012 137
My long time, Bella buddy lost her husband in an accident while we were there.

I'm glad she was surrounded by some of her closest friends when she got the news.  The ladies she was with that day were good people who had sturdy shoulders to cry on, and strong hearts to offer support.

I do have more pictures to show you, and it was a lovely weekend.  But my heart aches for her now.

She should be proud and thankful that the night before her husband's accident, she was saying very nice things about him and not complaining as many of us tend to do when we are idly talking about our husbands.  Not a negative word left her mouth when she talked about the two of them restoring a cabin together and about his job as a fireman.

Lots of us might (me included) might throw in a snide or complaining comment about a husband's design choices,  forgetfulness, or who knows what when talking about doing a project like that together or be crabby about the long hours he works at his job.

She spoke with pride about his work and with happiness talking about their project.

The minute I heard the news about her loss, I had to call my own loved one right away and tell him how much I appreciated him.  You never know when it could be too late.  Or when your last conversation about someone was not a flattering one.

Delightful Disneyland

Sugarwings, Travel

CA Disney 2012 280

This little angel doesn't look exhausting, does she? Oh, but she kept us running!

CA Disney 2012 247
She was worth the chase, and I loved our trip to Disneyland.

CA Disney 2012 326

Especially since we went off season, and on a Monday. NO LINES. And I mean NONE.

CA Disney 2012 245
We loved Ariel's ride so much that we just stayed on it and kept going round and round, we didn't even have to get off and get back in line. Because there were NO LINES! wow, I was happily surprised by that.

CA Disney 2012 374

All of the characters we met were happy to see us and spent some time conversing.  Alice really liked the white rabbits on Sugarwing's dress.

CA Disney 2012 333
Before our trip, I bought a few cutey pie dresses on sale at TJMax for about $10 each, with some leggings and light sweaters for layering to keep up with weather changes.  That was the right choice, and I thought she looked adorable.  Even with the dresses pulled up over her head most of the time.  At least they all had underskirts.

CA Disney 2012 299
But the highlight of the park for our kiddo?  Ariel, her hero.   We made reservations at Ariel's Grotto for lunch, and the morning leading up to meeting the world's most wonderful princess was filled with anticipation.

CA Disney 2012 295
Finally, lunch time came, after hours of Sugarwings telling us she was soooo hungry, trying to convince us that we should go straight to the restaurant at about 9am.  And 9:15, 9:16, and so on.

CA Disney 2012 305
Meeting her idol was everything she had hoped it would be.

CA Disney 2012 311
And was followed by meeting a few of the "lesser" princesses, who while weren't as dreamily ideal as Ariel, were all beautiful and she was happy to meet them.

CA Disney 2012 315
Our own princess was so exicted by Belle, that she did a twirl for her and whacked her elbow on the wall. Belle was kind enought to kiss her arm and make it feel better.

CA Disney 2012 318
Cinderella sat down to chat.

CA Disney 2012 320
Sugarwings didn't see any reason to let her lunch get cold just because royalty was visiting.  She got a laugh from each princess who came by, just by being her own sweet, silly self.

CA Disney 2012 385

She sure kept us entertained.

CA Disney 2012 228
From her insistance that her Lego race car had to be the tallest one ever.

CA Disney 2012 231
(even tho it would only roll a couple inches)

CA Disney 2012 283
To her zest in chasing down every character that she saw. (Even though it was a bit like being outside with Twinkle when she sees a bunny and takes off.  Zoom, she was GONE. )

CA Disney 2012 260

Good thing the park wasn't crowded, and we could easily follow her.

CA Disney 2012 343
And her joy in the small things, spot lights, statues, flowers, etc.  This kid would have been fine not going on a single ride, she was happy with just poking around and looking at all the details.  She played with this spot light on the carpet for about 30 minutes while her tired, old grandparents enjoyed the break and sat on a sofa in the air conditioning while clips from our favorite movies played on the giant screens.

CA Disney 2012 403
I'd never been to Disneyland in CA before, and it won't be my last time.  I enjoyed the small, compact size of it, and the fact that everything was in walking distance.  No boat to the tram to get to the parking lot to drive to the hotel like you have to endure at the Florida  park.

We could easily walk to the hotel mid-day to take a break and rest, then walk back later on for more fun.

CA Disney 2012 460
We stayed at the original, recently remodelled, Disney hotel  and it felt upscale and pampering.

CA Disney 2012 269

I was also thrilled with the quality of the food. We had great meals Downtown Disney and in the parks too.  We'd packed lots of organic, healthy snacks to carry with us, so bought very little in the way of junk.  A couple little treats here and there, just because it was a vacation. But mostly, we sat down at good restaurants and ate grilled fish, or chicken, and lots of veggies.

By bringing our own snacks, we saved a lot of cash and could spend more at restaurants and eat much healthier. And it was nice to take the time to have a sit down dinner with a glass of wine after traipsing through the park all day.

CA Disney 2012 414

Yep, it was all the best.

CA Disney 2012 390

The only thing that could have made it better, would have been to have the rest of the family with us.  I hope we can take them sometime, fun is best when shared.

Travel

CA Disney 2012 338
We are home from Cali and it was a great trip, but man, am I exhausted! After all the work and excitement of Birdsong, then the Tiffany art retreat right after, and segueing right into chasing a 5 year old fairy as she flitted across Disneyland, I'm beat.

But in a good way.

Pictures later when I recover. (Or should I say, IF I recover?) Whoo, I need a 3 week nap.

How to make a hand painted banner on canvas and tips on painting a rose topiary

flowers, hand painted signs, how to's, how-to projects, paintings, Travel, Tutorials

Banner 001

Here is a little break from Birdsong talk!

I've spent a lot of years painting murals, I travelled around the country and painted quite a few hotels, day care centers, and even a casino, as well as people's homes.    But the scaffolding and ladders really got to me, so I moved on to other things.

Every once in a while I'll get to do one again and always enjoy the opportunity. Especially a canvas one that I can work on in my own space and take my time on.  This one was sent to my pal, Kim, for her Tiffany's event, where I am at right now.  (I've pre-posted this)

While this isn't exactly what the front of a real Tiffany's shop looks like, it is just right for the ladies attending Kim's party! Whimsical, fun, and pretty.

!cid_tie_8CEB029EE824472_6AC_D916

Kim wanted something more light hearted than the cold stone of the original building in NY.

Finished banner 013

So, we took a few liberties with our design.

My painting is all free hand..  I just paint as I go.  My lines aren't perfectly straight, but I think that adds to the whimsy and suits my style.

Plus, I know that I could NEVER do straight lines, so I don't even try! But since this was so architectural, I used a level to help out with the door and window shapes.

!cid_tie_8CEB185855D263D_9D4_24421
Here is the inspiration that Kim sent to me.  I used the fanciful nature of this with the stone front of the real building, along with the colors she asked for to come up with the banner design.

Banner 009
Here is my basic sketch for the idea.  We decided to flip the color scheme, so more of the Tiffany Blue would show. The canvas is being used as a backdrop for a photo booth, and with people standing in the middle, not much of the door itself would show.

Chicken coop building 063

My first step was getting the canvas ready. I like to paint on drop cloths, but this picture was larger than most seamless dropcloths are.  I found fabric big enough to avoid seams at Darhma Trading Co.

I washed and dried mine hoping to remove the fold marks that way. MAN, WAS THAT A MISTAKE!  It came out of the dryer looking like a wadded up piece of paper.  I had to IRON the whole thing, and 13 x 8' is a lot to man handle over an ironing board.

I'd say, iron the folds only, don't do it the way I did!

After struggling with the ironing board till I was  steaming myself,  I laid it out on the floor to cut and pin.  After carefully measuring and cutting, I hemmed the two sides on my sewing machine, and then laid it back out on the floor to pin the rod pocket at the top. I measured and cut it in a way that let me keep the hemline at the bottom as is, no sewing.

By the way, it helps to have a second set of hands to wrangle the fabric and help feed it into the sewing machine, this was a big job and even this lightweight canvas feels weighty when you are trying to sew it due to its size.

Another tip I have is to use duct tape to hold the hem in place along with the pins.  It helped me.

If you are going to hang it with grommets, add these later. We didn't want the ropes to stand out much, so didn't want to use grommets this time.  I cut up strips of the fabric I had trimmed off, and sewed them in half for added strength.  Then zig zagged them to the back of the cloth at regular intervals.

While this will hang from a pole in the rod pocket, I was worried that it would blow or sway in the breeze, so the straps of fabric sewns the the painting's sides can be tied to the structure, and will help secure it and keep it in place.

Chicken coop building 064
To do the artwork, I needed a large wall space, so I cleaned out my garage and covered one wall with drop cloths. Then, nailed the canvas up over it. (my drop cloths have also been used previously to make Halloween party ghosts, see the faces on them?)

(yes, I have a giant, sequinned disco ball hanging in my garage, it tells me where to stop my car when I pull in. I've seen people use tennis balls in the same manner but that doesn't seem to be as much fun)

Banner and baskets 018
First step was to prime.

I'm picky about primers, and know its important to use the right one for the job. In this case, a cheap, dry wall primer was fine. And I was glad I used it, because the fabric was thirsty and soaked it right up.

After it was primed and dry, I drew the door, and window with chalk and blocked in the colors.

For a large painting like this, quarts of latex wall paint in flat or eggshell works best for back grounds.

I used a sponge roller brush for the "stone"

To create the awnings, I marked the center of the top of each window, then tied a ribbon to a pencil.  The ribbon was cut to the length from the center of the window to the edge of it.  I held the ribbon at the mid spot, put the pencil on the corner of the window, and while holding the ribbon in place, drew the arc to the other corner.

Banner progress 001
For depth, I dry brushed a darker aqua over the sponge rolled base color, then did the same, lightly with white. I used white to create the mortar lines too.  The mortar lines are drawn on with a sponge dipped in the white paint.  I didn't want a sharp line that I might have got from a brush.

Next, I finished the window paintings and awnings.  Always work from the background out.  Nearer things are last to paint.

The two topiaries are my foreground, so I blocked those colors in after the windows were done.

Notice the Tiffanys sign? I stupidly painted it too high, over the rod pocket, so painted over it to redo.  Which really isn't a big deal. Its only paint. It can be changed till you get it right.  You might notice my doorknob is different in this picture than in the finished one too.  After I roughed this in, I didn't like  it, and a swath of pink paint over it erased the plain door knob quickly.

Fairy designers 035

For the detail work, I used 2oz bottles of acrylic craft paint.

Finished banner 005
To get the metallic look that I have on the door knob, jewelry, and chandeliers, I painted them all in regular acrylic paint first to get the shadows, highlights, and shapes. Then, I covered that in  metallic paint.

I used the same 2oz craft bottles.  The silver and white metallic paints are very sheer and take a lot of coats to really cover, but that is what I like about them. I can do just one or two coats over my painting and get the metallic shine, but not cover up the details. But because they are sheer, its hard to build up color.  That is why I do the basic shape in opaque paint first.

Fairy designers 032
When creating a topiary, I always draw the pot with brown paint first, then sketch three circles, connected by twisted stems.  After that, I block in the basic rose shapes, and color the entire background of the balls dark green mixed with a dark brown.

Fairy designers 033
The same principal applies for the foreground as it did for the background. Paint the furthest things first.  I do the sticks and leaves in dark colors, then highlights over that.

Fairy designers 036
Next comes the leaves from dark to light, adding detail as I go.

Fairy designers 037
I got side tracked and added a few butterflies!

After painting the pot/sticks/leaves/ then roses, I went back and touched up some of the leaves so that they were covering the roses a little bit here and there.

Finished banner 007

The moss is really easy, just scribbles and swirls with white and gray on a liner brush.  I paint the roses with a 2" flat brush, and the leaves with slightly smaller flat brush, adding veins with a liner brush.

Darker leaves toward the back, lighter in front, gives the illusion of roundness. The roses should face different directions, not all the same.

There is a tutorial on my sidebar with tips on doing a nest.

Finished banner 011
Layering is important. Make sure it looks like there are items in front of each other.

A few twirling tendrils out the side of the topiary soften the painting.

Banner 007

For the lettering, I used pale grey, outlined with dark brown. On the highlight side, I added a line of watered down white, on the shadowed side, a line of aqua a shade darker than the stones.

Next step, I let the paint cure a few days. Yes, it was dry to the touch, water based paints dry fast. But- I wasn't taking any chances of it sticking together when I rolled it up, so I gave it some time.

To mail it without fold marks, I bought cardboard tube mailers. They weren't big enough to put the 8' high mural inside of, or long enough either, so I duct taped 8 foot's worth of them together, and tightly rolled the canvas around it, then took the roll to the UPS store where they have boxes of all sizes and shapes.

April 030

Well, hopefully, when I return from California, I'll have some pictures of my friends and I in front of this storefront!

For now, I have pics of my own little model whose imagination turned a painting on the wall into a private play house.  Here she is opening the door.

April 020
And jumping out of the door to yell surprise.

April 024
And dancing through the door.

The pictures I don't have are of her drawing on the door.  Yep, she had some fun with chalk making a picture just like Grammie did. Oh well, it was only chalk and wiped right off, coulda been worse…

Pretty, pretty, pretty, I love Kim’s house! plus a Boutique sale and a giveaway

Food and Drink, give away, the Boutique at Karla's Cottage, Travel, We're having a party, Workshops

IMG_3063

Everything at Kim's was pure perfection, she has major decor, design, and detail skills.

IMG_3095

And the ladies who came to spend the day were such fun!  I hope they enjoyed my two classes as much as I enjoyed sharing the tips with them.

IMG_3070
There were gifts galore too. Kim gave us all the table decorations she used to foof our seats, I already have these wings on display in my own holiday decor.

And the generous attendees all included me in their swaps, even though I didn't have time to participate.  (photos to come, you'll be impressed with their work!)

IMG_3069
Kim's house was sooooo pretty. I said that word so many times, that I sounded like a broken record.  Or a dimwit with a pitiful vocabulary.

IMG_3050

Can you blame me? Pretty was everywhere.

Kim was attempting to show me around when I arrived, when I caught a glimpse of her studio through the open doorway and I was magnetically pulled into the prettiness of the room, with no hope of stopping myself. I just had to explore that space.

IMG_3049
But it wasn't just the studio.  The whole house is that great.  This is the bedroom that Jessi and I shared, Kim's daughter, Kate, gave up her room for the whole weekend.

IMG_3074
My main project was a wire wrapped wreath, with lace leaves and a nesting dove.   I brought a table full of "extras" for everyone to play with. Ribbons, lace, beads, glitters, etc.   When I teach a class,  I think its only fair to include everything you need in the kits.

But- its good to have an option to personalize the piece and have some bonus goodies to dig through.

Don't we all love to dig?

IMG_3089
Everyone's project was unique, no two just the same. Just the way I like it!

IMG_3067

We also played with paint, and I explained some of the techniques for short cut painting tips that are on the side bar of my blog. I'll have some pictures of that later, as well as a bigger sample of the work. Kim and I painted her nightstands using the same steps that we did on the small wooden boxes that I brought for the class.

IMG_3059
When I arrived, she had a pristine, newly painted, chalk board door.

IMG_3060
And I had the honors of supplying its first drawing.

IMG_3061
Kate has tamed a feral cat and it adores her.  So, my thought was to add the kitty to the picture, and have it play with the ribbons dangling from the wreath that we were making that day.

IMG_3096
I have more photos to share after Christmas, but for now, I really need to get shopping and wrapping! Sugarwings has been ill since I got home and a lot of my time has gone to snuggling instead of prepping for the big event this weekend.  I hope Santa can find my chimney, because no one in this house should count on gifts from me…. I'm not prepared!

IMG_5778

Speaking of gifts- don't forget that you have till Christmas to win a special, surprise gift from me. Any comment this week, any post counts.

Also, if you have Christmas gift cash to buy your self a gift, come on by the Boutique. Everything is 30% off if you use  THIS LINK.

The only catch is, that I won't be doing any mailing for a few days.  You might not recieve your box till after New Years.

And if you click on the website directly, you can't get the sale price, its only available from THIS LINK

When you fill your shopping cart, you need to type in the words-  happyholidays   – then hit "recalculate" to get the special price. Its simple to do.

Merry Christmas!

IMG_6209
Wouldn't this be a good idea for gift giving? It would be sweet to slip a gift into a box that is a gift itself.

IMG_6210
I made this box for another reason, but it kind of got me thinking of the possibilities.

IMG_6208
Of course, I haven't even done my Christmas shopping yet, so I should probably stop thinking about what I'll put the gifts in and start thinking about what I'll buy instead!

IMG_3004
There was a teensy bit of time to shop while I was in Palm Springs last weekend, but it was more sight seeing than shopping.

If I'm in an area where the stores are Rolex, Coach, and other high dollar  specialty stores, chances are pretty durn slim that I will  be buying my family any holiday gifts there.

IMG_2980-1
These guys simply aren't the type to wear a watch that costs thousands of dollars.

Not that I am the type to buy one, anyway.

But it was fun to look.

IMG_2992
It was fun to be a tourist and go sightseeing. At the stores as well as out and about. We took the tram up the mountain side, 8,500 feet up to catch the views one morning.

IMG_3002
And drove to Temecula to do a little wine tasting after that.

My brilliant husband had a great idea, that I'd never have thought of. He said we should go to the lounge, sit down and sample there instead of standing in line to belly up to the counter in the crowded tasting rooms.

The four of us got to try a good selection from the winery, relax in comfy chairs, and share a cheese plate. That was much nicer than standing up at the counter in the crowds of other testers.

IMG_2998
Isn't this a cute display for the holidays?

IMG_3000
And I loved seeing poinsiettas growing outside!  The weather wasn't perfect, we needed our coats, but it was still warmer than Kansas and I really enjoy seeing all the flower beds full and blooming in the sunshine out in California. Its probably my favorite part of the trip, because back home, my garden is brown and crunchy with a hint of green slime where the last plants froze and are rotting.

IMG_2999
The whole trip was just beautiful.  But its good to be home and have a couple of days with Sugarwings and Dewdrop.  They both stayed over night the last couple of days, so I'm just now getting back to work. That was a great way to ease out of the vacation and back into the real world.

Two days of llittle girl cuddles was a welcome extension of my time off!

IMG_6230

Now, its back to normal and back to work.

IMG_6212

And thats not bad either!  Its good to be home and I'm happy to be back in the studio.

Once upon a dream

I wish I could teach more often.  Its a blast. Of course, I am a bit of a ham, and I talk too much, so its wonderful to have a trapped crowd listening to me…Actually, its just plain old FUN to do.  When I make something, my brain works in How-To Steps as I go.  Its natural for me to break down the process of creating something.

I find myself telling people steps of something when they give me a compliment, which is silly, most people don't care, they are just saying something nice about it.  I can see their eyes glaze over when I go into too much detail, so its nice to have people who really do want to know how something is made.

IMG_5022
The class I taught for Jenn was a mini "workshopette" for opening night, so I only had an hour.  I needed to package it up so that it was easy to assemble.   It seemed to be just the right timing, the ladies had time to finish and come up to the supply table to embellish with glitters and mica flakes too.

IMG_5013
I had felt like it was so simple I didn't need written instructions, but then started to freak out and worry that maybe I was wrong. And yes I was. So, I'm glad I scribbled out some in the bar the night before. The front desk printed them out for me and I was glad to have them for the class.

IMG_5019
One of my favorite things about the class was seeing all the variations people made on the prize ribbon.  Individuality is important to me and I made sure no two kits were exactly alike, but the fairy ladies took them even a step further to make each unique.

IMG_5017
Amy mentioned that she would love to make hers into a magic wand and wished she had a stick. I suggested gluing two glue sticks together and wrapping them with paper.  It turned out really cute!

IMG_5437
If you'd like to make your own, I had some materials left over to make a limited amount of extra kits. They can be found for $11 each in the Boutique

IMG_5041
The projects at the event were all such fun!  This is Dee's and she provided cool images to use.

IMG_5105
Mine ended up a bit different.  I wanted to use one of my mushrooms that I made for the centerpieces. It still needs a little sumthin sumthin… maybe small prize ribbon rosettes on each side, in neutral colors?

IMG_5083
This is my chandy from Natasha's class.  There were a few changes on mine too, I had strands of rhinestones with me and wanted to use those instead of the beading she gave us in the kit. I also wrapped the wire in tulle and lace.

IMG_5080
Then, I added a few dangles.

IMG_5031
Well, durn, I don't have a photo of Andrea's lovely necklace kit.  She packed up the best stuff to make the bracelet/necklace.  Lots of semi precious beads, that really made it special. If you know Andrea, you know she has exquisite taste.  (Plus she is sensitive, sweet, kind hearted, and beautiful)

IMG_5003
My pal, Tiffany, taught about taking better photos, and I learned a LOT from her.  She fixed the settings on my camera and I didn't even know they were wrong.

IMG_5074
My roomie, Lori, had a fun class too. I didn't get to sit down and make it yet, because I was walking around and helping with it.   Her kits were packaged really special, and I do have mine to make later.

IMG_4936

On our welcome night classes, the acoustics were a bit off, so all the teachers pitched in and walked around to help, since we couldn't be heard as easily as we'd hoped. Their help made the classes a success. I was sure glad to see them all come to my aid!

IMG_5064
Suzanne was another roomie, and is always a delight to spend time with.  We also got to share a table on work day.

Our buddie, Kana was at our table too. She was our 4th roommate.  I've never shared a room 4 ways for an event like this, but it does make it even more fun.  Twice the giggles late at night than you get with just one roomie.

And three people to tell me to stop snoring.   They said I was a polite snore-er and would stop when told.  Suzanne taught everyone that if they snap their fingers I roll over and shut up.  Its a good trick. I felt like I should have gotten treats for it, though.

I've heard that if you pin a tennis ball to the back of your jammies, you won't roll onto your back, and I snore only on my back.  But I didn't have a tennis ball, we had raquet balls, and golf balls. One was too soft, one was too small, but I tried putting both into a sock and pinning it to the back of my sleep shirt.

The trouble was, the sock was too long and it swung around and whacked me in the face, and did no good at keeping me off my back. I was actually more comfortable on my back, with the sock-o-balls on my shoulder, and I would dream it was little Agnes Rosebud nestled up on my shoulder as I slept.

The details at each place setting were as wonderful as everything else Jenn does.

IMG_5090
She didn't miss any opportunity to make even the smallest detail into something special. This is the seating chart!

IMG_5098
Our table was the "Water Sprites" which of course reminded me of my little Sugarwings who thinks she is a mermaid.

IMG_5054
Jenn had wonderful photo ops set up for us, this wall of frames was sooooo pretty.  And so is Valerie (wearing one of the crowns I made)

IMG_5032
This vintage angel was a great spot to pose too. Doesn't Natasha look like an angel herself too? Well, while she is nice as can be, she is also far from angelic, that girl is full of fire, is stunningly funny, and always ready with a great story.  But she sure pulls off the angel look!

IMG_4950
It was great to see old friends, make new ones, and play dress up while surrounded by such stunning scenery.  I'm honored that Jenn asked me to teach, it meant a great deal to me to be part of this one of a kind event.

IMG_5063
Thanks, Jenn for everything you did to make us all feel like pampered princesses right out of a fairy tale for this enchanted weekend

Home from some family fairy fun

antiques/junking, fairies, family, Travel

Flying karkie
Its soooooo good to be home. But I'm still not caught up. I wish I really was a fairy and could wave my magic wand to make everything get done!

IMG_3478

While visiting my sisses in Indy, we had some fairy dress up time together. I probably play dress up with them as much as I do with Sugarwings.  There is nothing like having family that never out grows their playfulness!

IMG_3596
Although, there is an age range when not everyone finds it as much fun as we do.  But the kids indulged  us and let their fairy grandma grant them wishes with her wand while I took their picture. A couple of the girls even put on some fairy wings and posed for me too.  But look at little Jaythan's face, he is the one sitting in the grass in a white shirt.  Poor kid, he must be wondering if Mamaw is going to be taken away and locked up somewhere. He is worried she has snapped!

Yes, I complained about being busy, busy, busy since I got home, but I did take time to edit some of the photos. A person needs to have their priorities straight.

Plus, picnik is a super fast, easy way to edit.  While doing a couple of the pictures, I took an extra bit of time to write out the steps on how I did it.  I'll be posting a couple of tutorials next week with the step by steps if you are interested.

My trip was just great.  Its the first time I drove there by myself in years and I was a bit worried about it, but I had a wonderful time.  I was having so much fun talking and singing to myself and planning projects in my mind that I didn't even turn on the audio book that I'd downloaded.  Sometimes, 10 hours alone can be quite therapeutic.  I think I needed that.

On the way, I shopped a bit, but not much.  This has been the year of NO JUNK around here.  How sad. I miss my junking trips.  We were too busy in Indy to get out much either, we had some Very Important Family stuff to do, so barely shopped, and most of it was not vintage.  We did hit one Goodwill, where I found an amazing old, old skirt to take apart for the fabric.

I got home in time for my son and his family to fix us a big anniversary dinner and spend the evening on Tuesday night. Since I knew they were coming, I limited my stops at antique malls on the drive home.

We even got to have Sugarwings stay all night, that was the best welcome home I could get and was worth zipping right on by antique stores along the way to get home in time to see her.

IMG_3822-1For years, I've been searching for a pretty alarm clock for by my bed. One that didn't need to be wound up. There are plenty of those to be found, but few electric ones. In Columbia, MO I came across this beaut.  Also the gorgeous beaded fabric under it. It was originally a dress, but is in shreds, so is great for cutting up to make crap out of.

There were some pretties to add to the Boutique too. And believe it or not, I actually took photos and got them listed. Its has been way too long since I took care of my business.  Its not a lot, but its a start.

IMG_3835
While I was at it, I grabbed a couple of things that I'd made months ago and never had time to list.  There are TWO TUBS of stuff that has piled up, waiting for me to take pictures of and try to sell, and I simply have not gotten to it.

Yesterday, instead of working, we took all 7 of the grand kids and their parents to a water park to celebrate some birthdays, and this weekend, I have Sugarwings. But- I'll be forcing myself to stay on task in the next week, and hope to have more listed between a few other projects I have lined up.

  IMG_3839
Wish me luck, I plan on spending an hour each day on nothing but the Boutique and Etsy, then making things the rest of the day.  Well, except some Sugarwings birthday time.  She and I have a date for Smurfs, I think.

IMG_3816
When I got back from my trip, Direct TV was out.  No TV, no saved DVR programs.  I thought about not even getting it fixed until I was caught up on my work, but then I started to shake and experience withdrawal symptoms and had to make the call within minutes of finding out I was TV-less.

Already, I missed out on the finale of Falling Skies and So You Think You Can Dance.  But luckily, I saw True Blood at Sissy's house.  Ooooh, that is a heartbreak diverted.

Well, instead of complaining about not getting any work done, I'll go do some.  Please check in Monday for editing tips if you want to play hooky from work and goof off with picnik like I did!

Thankful for family

IMG_2235
Our family getaway to Utah was very special.  It was good to see nieces and nephews we rarely get to visit and to catch up on laughs with some of my husband's sibs.

IMG_2234
We'd never been to his sister's newer home, and it was a beautiful place to stay, full of original artwork that was right up my alley.

IMG_2236
I never got tired of walking through the house and admiring the paintings.  Especially the fairy themed ones.

IMG_2231
They also had family portraits that were so beautiful, they held as much magic as the sprite and fey paintings did.

IMG_2233
Even the pets were represented in oil.  What a dreamy place!  The artist of many of these works is Lynn Lupettii and I have to say, I'm quite a fan.

IMG_2229
But the magic wasn't all just paint, we muggles spent some time visiting Hogwarts too.

IMG_2228-1
Quite a few of the group headed to the theater about 5 am on Thursday to watch a Harry Potter marathon that ended with the midnight showing of the latest flick.

Due to flight delays, I didn't get to join them quite that early, but I made it for movie #4 and was surprised at how fast 3 am came and it was all over with.  We had blankets, a ton of snacks and food and drinks, and it was such fun to be part of the large crowd saying a fond farewell to Harry.  The very last movie was just as moving to me as the book was. I sobbed again just like when I read the happy ending to the series.  Even knowing what was coming up, I still cried like a baby when**************************.(sorry, don't want to mess up the end for you, but I can't quite believe there are Harry fans who haven't read the book yet!!)

Its one of the best series endings I've ever read. Heck, I have tears in my eyes now just thinking about it.

IMG_2264
But the real, honest magic of the trip, was Utah itself.  Everywhere we went, there was beauty.  And not much is more beautiful than Thanksgiving Point.

Its kind of a botanical gardens, but it is very user-friendly and almost like taking the kids to the park for the day. A very special park!

(this photo of Grandma Joan is NOT doctored up, the colors were that vibrant there!!!)

IMG_2315
Kids are allowed to run and play, and even to roll down the big hill.  The grass was a thick, cushion of plush green, nothing like around my house.  Better than any golf course I have seen too.  Plus NO CHIGGERS! Its been years since I have sat down in the grass out of chigger fear. I was so drawn to this lawn that I even tried rolling down the hill with the little girls.

Since I weigh quite a bit more than the kids, I took off rolling a bit harder and faster than they did, and after about 2 turns, was dizzy and ready to stop. But gravity had other plans for me, and it felt like an hour on a roller coaster later when I finally stopped, although it was probably only a few feet.  It made me so dizzy that I even feel slightly nauseous looking at this photo, although the picture doesn't really capture just how steep it really was.

IMG_2294
This park reminded me of Disney-world with no rides. It was over the top, and the detail was amazing.

  IMG_2266
The whole weekend, I kept seeing things Sugarwings would have loved, and I missed her terribly. I knew she'd have had a good time with her 2nd cousins.

IMG_2303
And this park was a perfect setting to play fairy. She'd have been deep into her imaginary world if she'd been there.

IMG_2249
I can just picture her having a conversation with this dragon. Its the base of my sis-in-law's mailbox!  Her home is filled with dragons and fairies and gnomes.

IMG_2362 The back yard was two levels, with a curving downhill path following a series of waterfalls.

IMG_2360
The pool at the base of the falls was lit up and misty.  Of course, Sugarwings is what we politely call a "hands on" child.  It would have been an non-stop challenge to keep her out of the waterfalls.

But I was pretty content to sit out there to enjoy the veiw adn the sound of trickling water.  In Utah, we had zero humidity, and could open our windows at night and listen to the creek as we slept. Not like the 110 degree heat index we have today in Kansas.

That fountain alone would have been worth the trip!  I had to change from the upstairs deck to the downstairs porch back and forth, I couldn't make up my mind which had the best view.

Heart
Still, the very best part was getting to spend time with my husband's sweet family.  What nice, generous people they are. It was a lovely trip.

I know how lucky I am to have a husband I love so much, but I'm also lucky that he has a family that I love too.
