Magical Mermaids

While absolutely EVERYTHING about our trip to Utah was wonderfully fun, there were some extra special moments.

Like when cousins and cousins of cousins got to know each other and spend a whole day together as magical creatures.

30DC9A17-B5FD-49A9-BA1A-B2B186D9B788

The Park City Marriott had an atrium and pool that was  inviting, spacious, just made for gathering a flock (or pod?) of merfolk together.

0495A599-30F7-4774-B01B-4E7E708898A4

It was ideal for gathering family members too.  We had our luncheons there, our gossip sessions, and our wine sipping by the pool when we weren’t out exploring the city.

Terry and Guncle Kevin even threw a poolside birthday party for Guncle Randy in the space.   And what kind of cake do you get for a Pet Butler?

A pupcake!

We even used the area for our prepping spot to get ready for the costume ball, with the girls doing each other’s makeup.

Me too, I was going for raven eyes.

1742B1F4-0CC8-45CB-ABCD-7C8B42E224CB

The hotel itself was just what we needed for a family reunion.  There were tables to play cards, lounging areas, a bonfire pit with s’mores, and an ATM that the grand fairies decided to use to play banker.  I think I saw some playing cards inserted into it at one point.

ps- while the kiddos had a blast with these $39 Amazon tails, this is what Sugarwings’ looked like after one hour.  They are hard to put on, hard to keep on, and easy to rip.  Too bad, because they were  beautiful and fun!

After getting in to the Salt Lake airport, after a flight delay that left us sitting on a runway in KC for a while, then RUNNING at top speed through the Denver airport to make our connection, we were ready for something fun.

0270E2BE-FD95-4248-A911-8DC49B3B43B3

Honestly, though, traveling with these two is always a pleasure.  And Sugarwings was so grown up, she seems to know more about getting around airports than I do.  I don’t think I could’ve made it without her.

(Doesn’t this guy look like a bluebird of happiness, or is that just our point of view?)

While waiting on the plane, not knowing how long it would be, I was told that I should go speak to the agents at the desk.

While leaving the two girls alone on the plane?

At first, I was totally against it, and wondered how I could load both girls and all of our stuff off the plane then reload, but the stewardess looked at the kiddos and said they seemed like they would be fine.  I viewed them through her eyes and realized that they weren’t so little after all, and that she was right.  I left the plane with confidence in them, and even took time to stop at Starbucks to buy the ingredients for a cocoa party.

We had such a good time, the college girls seated around us chimed in on a chorus of “Shake it Off”

DFE3FA61-8BB9-4CDD-8C5B-ACB39FBFD43B

Still, after the flight was over, I was ready to leave it behind.

I have been wanting to go to the Sundance store’s outlet, and the girls were kind enough to indulge me.   I figured that the festive weekend would be so kid centric, that I could indulge myself for a quick visit and they would still have plenty of fun.

097E8726-16CB-4B0F-9AB9-331B2F31AE20

And yes, they did.  There was so much fun to be had, I don’t know how it was all squeezed into one weekend!

9C0249BB-5B35-4EC9-920A-6194BAD55B9E

Our stop wasn’t a long one, barely enough to whet my appetite, but about as much as the little sprites could handle, so I scooped up my beautiful deals ($10 lace top, $69 velvet jacket originally $200, a lace skirt, still high for me, but worth it, and a $19 Johnny Was tee)

283771AB-F90D-4A0B-AFD6-85842505AA2A

Plus a $39 silver and moonstone ring.

8DBB2E66-9F6D-498D-BD83-87181C5169D3

I was very satisfied with my binge bargains, and told the Guncles about them.  And mentioned that all men’s wear was 30% off the sale price.  So, the three of us left the grand fairies with cousins at the pool and made another quick trip over.  Kevin found $10 wool slippers and Randy got this great, casual jacket for $70 (originally $198).

ED562D08-1614-4EC4-BA10-BDEFC99A7A4C

And yes, I over indulged again.

Johnny Was leggings, $39, black velvet and lace top $10, and thought I was happily finished.

Although, it was hard to tear myself away from these bins.

66E8B856-6CED-4F65-866A-A06443EF2CB3

So much treasure hunting!  This is where I found the $10 shirts.  I made some friends there, as we all dug and looked for each other’s sizes.   There were ladies from all over the country, and even a family from Europe who were exploring the boxes.

FD54E5F8-7D85-4A85-B6AE-704DFC23D742

Not everything in the store was at a huge savings, the Sundance store’s prices are way up there to start with.  But ooooh, so pretty!  And so much to see.   There were new items on Saturday that weren’t out on Thursday, so if you go, try to check back again.

03767C64-2F2C-449B-AC2B-7616CBA1779D

As the Guncles and I were leaving, Randy pointed out this jacket (and it was cold outside, much chillier than I’d packed for).

it was $249 on sale for $49, and I fell in love with its furry lined coziness.  (Looks like someone else in the crowd buys Johnny Was pants, huh?)

FF094A0D-2060-4026-81DA-5A4FB362B289

Typically, I’m a tee shirt (usually from Walmart) and jeans person.  But I do love pretty things and am glad I let loose to get these new pieces!

Even though I don’t seem to have enough sense of style to avoid wearing a J. Was shirt with a kid’s $3 jacket from Kohl’s clearance.

Oh well, works for me!

While in Indiana, my sissies and I had a shopping day in Zionsville, and hit the Noblesville Antique Mall on the way.

Where I found these dresses!

Oh my!

09E4FD56-77FA-4D5F-AC85-D93036C60757

We had lunch in a cute, old house that was transformed into a tea shop.

0430BAC0-2857-41BE-875E-819D52BD32DA

All three of us were stumped by these flowers.  They seem to have the body of a carnation and petals of a begonia.

My grand fairies would swoon over the teacup selection!

The town was more boutiquey than antiquey, but lots of fun.

It doesn’t matter what the shopping is, it is the Sister time that counts.

But when a sister matches the shop, that is pretty cool too.

Since we started taking annual Sister Trips to Florida a few years ago, I haven't been visiting Indiana as much as I used to.  So I made sure to detour through Pendleton on my way to meet up with Dewdrop in Kentucky.

Sadly, the town was hit by a tornado, the first in almost two hundred years.   And apparently, they didn’t think a siren was needed because tornados just don’t hit there…

Luckily, there were no tragedies.  I was glad to see the Falls Park lighthouse was still standing, even though it now had a tilted top.  Lots of trees were down, you can see an example of the mess in the right side of this photo.

C37971F0-0F7D-4383-A274-3B4EEAAF87D1

There were tons of big, old trees fallen throughout the town.

6AAC862E-67FD-4B49-848F-54F05BE81EC5

The twister’s path damaged one of my sister’s and a niece’s homes, trees, and fences. But on the other side of town, my niece, Shelli, had no issues at all.  Her beautifully painted fence was looking great!

457C94B6-6FCA-49E3-8643-9C2F08E0C193

Cool, isn’t it?

She says she got the stencils off of Amazon.  It is a unique look, I really liked it.

1B80217C-78A5-40BF-8838-1DDA3100FA25

I also really liked Kevin, Shelli’s grand dog.  He is doodle-riffic, and every bit as cute as his cousin, Sugar.

While in Indy, I had a chance to catch up with family I don’t see often enough. And to make plans for the next Sister Trip.  This time, we are including my sister’s daughters, and making it a Big Girl/Little Girl Trip.

We are going the week after A Snowbird’s Song, and November just cannot get here soon enough for me!

Dewdrop has come to spend some summer with us.  My pal, Lori was kind to offer to have me stay over in her  Kentucky home as a half way spot to pick up our grand fairy, who was coming from NC.

Not only did I get some precious time to reconnect with an old friend, I got to meet her family for the first time.  And yep, they were as wonderful as she is.

And her home?  I was probably too full of seething jealousy to take photos…

34B5A0E6-FF47-4F5C-9082-F3E95BE57052

Seriously, what was wrong with me?  Why didn’t I take pics?

Every inch of her home is a delight.  I snapped this of some of her artwork on display in her studio, but it doesn’t represent her home, which is more neutral toned and filled with vintage and farmhouse glam design.

Plus, the most important part of any home, comfort and hospitality.  There wasn’t a single area in that house that didn’t call out, “Hey, sink into this comfy chair and relax a bit!”

A8D54AE9-C29B-4886-A4CF-7896474785F7

Lori will be teaching at A Snowbird’s Song, and she sent her finished examples home with me (photos soon.)

That isn’t all she sent home with me…

She filled my car with this load of vintage glory!

(Maybe she was afraid that I would steal her sweet, little  Lucy, and wanted to make sure there was no space in the car to squeeze her into?  I did fall for her girls, and that littlest one really grabbed my heart.   I wanted to keep her.)

F421AC79-56DE-47E9-BA75-D1105529BEE4

Recently, I had redone my studio and had everything rearranged and streamlined.  But all of the wonders Lori sent home with me went seamlessly into the room and made it even better.  Probably because all of it was stuff I loved.

If you decorate with things you love, they always mix and match well together, right?

Thank you, Lori, for your generosity in sharing your home, family, and pretties with me.

I'm glad I didn’t kidnap your daughter, that would not have been a very nice thing to do to repay you for your kindness (although, I would have enjoyed having her around!)

Winging it at Disney World

Food and Drink, Travel

IMG_4590

Before heading to Universal Studios to hit my head, we hung out with royalty at Artist Point in the Wilderness Lodge.  I'd never been to this restaurant before, but now it is my favorite place to go!

We were lucky to get in, the night before, we checked the Disney planning app to see where we might find an open reservation. If you  have spent much time at the Disney parks you know about all of the tips and rules about making plans way ahead, to get the best reservations and fast passes.  People plan months in advance to try to get the ideal dining experience and get up at 6am the day the window opens for them to make their plans.

57660900724__3E6F8792-023D-4985-AD0B-CE5051DEC8E1

We weren't even sure what day or what park we were going to the night before, so had no itinerary at all.  But everything fell into place for us, after buying my ticket at 9pm that night.

IMG_4576

One thing I have always found, is that while it can be hard to get reservations for the princess dining, there are thousands of people who are working the app to get exactly what they want, and they often book multiple experiences, as they weed through to finalize their plans. While it is kinda rude to hold up so many spots, eventually they do have to release the holds because they can't do it all. And they have a deadline where the restaurants are non refundable.

IMG_4578

I have had lots of success in getting to go where I wanted, by checking online to see when cancellations pop up.  24 hours before you go usually has lots of openings, and it did this time too.  Plus, we were fine with whatever happened, we were three adults who have been to the parks many times and weren't pinning all of their vacation hopes and dreams upon magical perfection.

We were winging it and just happy to be there, wherever we ended up.

There are some Facebook Disney groups I follow (because, yes, you know I am a Mickey nerd and can't get enough!) and these people can be quite over the top about details and spreadsheets and planning.  I do believe you need to go into it with some idea of where and what and when you are doing things, or you waste a lot of time, but I sure don't think it needs to be as desperate as some of these people make it out to be.

IMG_4594

Artist Point and the Story Book dinner was the BEST, and I hope to go again. But we would have had a good time, no matter what we did that day.

IMG_4596

If you get a chance, you should try it out. It is in a resort, not a park, so no ticket is needed to get in. Just remember to  check back again if reservations are full, some might open up.

And don't forget to give my pal, Dopey, a kiss on the top of the head. I got to, just like Snow White does. He was pretty dang cute.

What are the odds that when I was in Georgia for the art event, and then spending some time at the Guncles, that my sis, Terry would just so happen to be in Orlando visiting from Utah with her hubby?

57660900724__3E6F8792-023D-4985-AD0B-CE5051DEC8E1

Well, actually pretty good, They are season pass holders at Disney and spend a lot of time there.  And what are the odds of me turning a business trip to teach at Jekyll Island into an Orlando visit?

IMG_4646

If you know me, you know that I cannot resist a trip to the happiest place on Earth!

Terry and Dale invited me to join them at the condo they rented while there, so I added a couple of days onto my trip and took them up on their generous offer. I had my own room, and balcony, and we were just down the road from Disney and Universal.

IMG_4614

While I am a Disney Girl, through and through, I do luvs me some Harry Potter too.

By the way, since i was a teen, before even developing  my obsession with going to the parks, I adored this song:  Disney Girls

IMG_4619

Every inch of the two HP themed areas are awe-worthy.  I just wish the displays were what they were offering for sale….

IMG_4637

Such cool, old stuff. Witchiness and wonder everywhere.

IMG_4608

The rest of the park was interesting and I enjoyed walking through and checking it out.  While well done, and fun to see, the rides are a little rougher and MUCH MORE SPINNIER than at Disney World.  And outside of Hogwarts and Daigon Alley, there isn't the same magic as there is at Magic Kingdom.  (well, it is in the name there, after all, right?)

There aren't as many shows, but we saw the animal training show and the Hollywood horror make up show. And at that one, they pointed out that there were differences in the two parks.  As the actor heckled a small child and threatened to send a monster after him, he said, "This isn't Disney, we don't have to be nice to kids here"

It was pretty funny, and spot on.

IMG_4614

Magic always wins with me. I could have just sat on a bench and absorbed HP Land for days on end without tiring of it. So I know I will go back again sometime.

But I will avoid the rides.

They are not for me there. I should have known that when you are required to put all belongings in a locker before getting on, that they plan on spinning you around so much that they are afraid you will lose all of your stuff.

By the way, the locker rooms are horrid, over crowded, free for alls that are dangerous to try to maneuver through.

IMG_4640

I was spun a little bit, no a LOT, too much while visiting Hogwarts. I loved the lines going in and the castle itself, and should have stepped aside then. But no, I wasn't that smart.  I have no idea what the ride even was about, I had to squeeze my eyes closed as tight as I could, because if I had a glimpse of that 3-D screen while being gyroscoped in every direction, I was afraid that I would vomit on my own head while upside down.

When I got off, it wasn't much better, I was discombobulated, and had to be escorted and propped up by my dear brother-in-law to a bench.  My theory about motion sickness it to ignore it as much as I can/get fresh air/walk around/ think of something else/ do not let it ruin my day.

But as a senior citizen, which I apparently now am, and a vertigo survivor, my theory isn't as helpful as it used to be, and I took a nose dive into that hideously crowded, overheated locker room and face planted into a locker.

3966C688-2D51-44B9-8AC1-44DA028B93AB

Here I am a week later, after I'd found out that the reason I couldn't just walk off the headache and motion sickness was that I'd given myself another concussion.  My Dr. said I should get a helmet or bubble wrap if I was going to be landing on my head a lot, I had just gotten over a concussion a few weeks earlier.

So, I made myself an Easter bonnet with bubble wrap. (side note, Easter was a couple of weeks ago, how long is it acceptable to still be sweeping up Easter grass around the house??? That stuff is more insidious than glitter.)

While in Jekyll Island, Georgia, Guncle Randy and I made a quick trip to the beach on our way back to Jax and Guncleland.   The Easter workshop had been so jam packed with fun activities that we hadn’t had a chance to see the Atlantic til it was over.

2DF2003F-074E-40A7-8DFC-B28F71934B82

It goes against every fiber of my being to be so close to the water and not get to visit it, so my baby bro made sure I had a walk on the beach to gather shells.

We found mostly broken ones, and just enough to make this bunny.  The bits and pieces seemed to come together just right to develop a shell rabbit.  At first, I was sad that the biggest broke as I picked it up, but once I assembled them, the break looked like the bunny was wearing a waistcoat!  Even better than I had planned.
