I’ve been in a pink and brown mood lately, roses and chocolate, what a perfect combo.
And when little Miss Sugarwings came to visit, look what she was wearing!
She looked so grown up in her brown corduroy jacket with little pink rosebuds on the collar.
I love those colors accented with blue too. I know, trendy trendy, but I have ALWAYS loved them. I remember a favorite outfit as a kid, brown shorts that I would wear one day with a pink tank top and the next with a blue one. And back in the 70s when everything was earth tones, I had a brown and white couch and all my accessories in the room were blue. I simply couldn’t handle just the earthy shades, I needed that soft, pretty blue to make the combo work for me.
These colors have been on my mind a lot this week, since I have been redecorating in my house and thinking about blue shades to paint the bedroom adjacent to the pink and brown master bath.
And when I sat down to make something in my studio, I guess thoughts of these colors stayed with me.
I filled this pink flowered Limoges cup with a brown china egg (hand painted years ago by someone’s grandma) with a pink rose on it, lots of pink, blue, and white millinery flowers and a sweet little vintage butterfly.
It is for sale on Etsy now.
And remember the old hats, little figures, buttons, and the oval print I found while out junking this week? I used something from all of them to create this Marie Antoinette inspired box. I just had to, it was fate! I’d bought all of this stuff, then the movie was on TV that night!! (Isn’t Marie Antoinette one of the prettiest movies ever?? One eye candy scene after another)
The base is one of those unfinished craft boxes from Michaels. I poked holes in the top to wire the china figure in place, after covering the top of the lid in vintage wallpaper.
To hide the wires on the inside of the lid, I covered it in text from an old French book. I used another French book to cover the bottom of the box and line the interior walls. (I don’t speak or read French, so if you do and this is about boogers or warts or something ugly, please don’t tell me and ruin my illusions! I think it LOOKS pretty!)
The outside of the box was painted white and rubbed with an umber and a pink stamp pad, then trimmed out in vintage pink ruffle ribbon and some old brown silk ribbon.
I haven’t had much time for studio work, my fairy grand baby has been here 3 days in a row. We’ve been to the indoor pool, to the park, and out shopping. Then she helped me take down some Christmas decorations I still had up.
At least I got them down before Easter! Oh well, you can’t do everything, there is only so much time in the day.
All of you who comment about how much energy I have and how much I get done, need to know that I am selective about what I do and have priorities. I’d much rather sit in my studio and make tons of pretties than put away dusty holiday decor up in the guest room. I’d rather rip out a stairway and redo a room than work on my taxes. Oops, I really shouldn’t avoid that one too much longer. Maybe I need to have a look at those priorities!
Pretty, pretty, pretty! Your talents would be wasted on those darn taxes! Sugarwings looks like she’s got her sparkle & shine back!
Okay, I’ll stop saying I wish I had your energy and change it to… I wish I had your MOTIVATION and creativity! (But you still have to have energy to get the work done!)
I just love what you did with the half doll. The box is gorgeous

That cup with the handpainted egg is just gorgeous. I’ve always loved brown. I had a brown and blue house way back when.
Ooooo, I love your Marie Antoinette box! So pretty! I haven’t seen the movie yet but it sounds like a must! By the way, I think the French text reads something like “go to Karla’s Cottage for your fix of pretty!” 🙂
Do you remember that you were born in a brown house with robin’s egg blue trim? Add a little pink that was in your bedroom and know why you love those colors!
The cup with the egg in it is beautiful!
Sugarwings is such a doll!!!! My daughter loves pink and brown (it’s half her wardrobe) and she loves blue and brown too! I’m hoping that means she might share your creative eye! I have never seen the movie Marie Antoinette but now i have to! (Craig will be thrilled!!) I rented “Like Water for Chocolate” last week and I think Craig was going to take away my Netflix privelages… it wasn’t good. Your box is so pretty… you just amaze me. I don’t know French very well either but “cafe” is in there so it can’t be too bad!!!
Karla, Miss Sugarwings is not looking much like a baby anymore, she looks like a sweet little lady:) i love your new creations, the “Marie” box is just stunning and the eggs assemblage is oh~so~sweet!!!
Amazing what clothing can do, she does look really grown up, but still super cute:) Nice crafting:) Rachael
I agree with your priorities. Besides housecleaning just has to be done again, art lasts forever! Love the box, what a good idea!
I like all the things you have created…Smiles
Your creations are beautiful and your sweet little fairy grandbaby is becoming a little lady right before our eyes! She is beautiful!

Look at little Sugarwings in her hip outfit!
I love the half doll/box that is wonderful.
Hi Karla, I see that I’m not the only one who notices that Sugarwings has made a ‘growth leap’. At one time a baby, a week later a little lady. Ooh it all goes so fast!! I love what you have made as always. And I totally agree about priorities and let all my family members read your blog!!
How grown up Sugarwings looks in her jacket.
Alison
I forgot to tell you…I have some ‘wings’ coming up tomorrow a.m. 🙂
I’m with you, it is certainly much more satisfying to do things we love then the stuff we need to do!
:0)

Love the box!!!
I stopped by to invite you to a blog event I am hosting on Thursday, March 20, 2008, An Easter Parade, in celebration of the official first day of Spring and Easter. A give away will be held in conjunction with the event. For full details see todays blog post. I hope to see you there!
Hi, just catching up here! Sugarwings is a doll! I love the color combo myself as you can tell from my blog 😉 I’m trying to talk my DH into a bathroom those colors but I think I’m gonna have to settle for no pink, just tiffany blue with brown…
Sugarwings is a little doll, and I bet she was a good “helper.” 🙂
I loved all the pretties you made!
Boogers or warts! Bwahahaha! I only know some basics, but those are two words I never learned in French class. The boxes are certainly beautiful, regardless!
I swear you’re like the energizer bunny and the Easter bunny all blended into one lovely lady!!! Inspire away!!!!!!
Karla, I had completely forgotten one of my favorite childhood dresses was pink and brown and that was about 1968! The other day my daughter mentioned an out let area near our home opened a Crocs shop and had pink and brown Croc sandels!! I sure hope they have my size!!! Lori
Hi Karla, Sugarwings looks so cute in her chocolate brown jacket, how quick do they grow. Just love Marie box, your creations are beautiful as aways, and just love your vintage finds in the last post.
Hugs
Kirstie.
She looks so grown up holding the cup! She is so cute~~~~
