Cottage Charm Giveaway

Hey, wasn’t I just here a few minutes ago? Yep, two postings in a row, I forgot to mention a couple things last post. Also, people were asking about the addition my studio is in. So here are pictures of the outside. Now, why am I showing a gloomy, rainy day picture of my house with nothing blooming in the beds yet and a dirty car parked in front? Probably the same reason I showed all those photos of my studio in a mess with no real focal point in the pictures. Just felt like goofing off instead of working and didn’t take the time to "style" any of the pictures. I promise better, blooming, pretty pictures some other day.

We live in a farm house that is about to celebrate its 100th birthday. But it was tiny, we have remodeled and added on so many times. Originally, the house was one room! It had 3 when we bought it.

My studio is in the newest, big monstrosity of an addition, and is connected to the main house by the breezeway. Above my studio is an office/pool room/workout room for my husband. Next to that, with its own entrance is an apartment for my son, Ryan. He tried living on his own, but has some handicaps and we decided to build this to give him a home where he can be near us, but still have his privacy.

Here are Sparkle and Twinkle on the breezeway porch in a chair I found in the trash and painted pink.

And poor Bookie never gets in any of the photos because he is shy. Today he is really upset and shaking and I think he might be having back problems. He is hiding in the bathroom,so I brought him a pillow to lay on in there.

One more thing, if you can stand me running on and on- I mentioned before that I am totally addicted to the SEVEN WEIRD THINGS that a lot of bloggers are telling about themselves. I was tagged by Natasha http://natashaburns.blogspot.com/ and answered it, forgetting completely that I was also tagged by Sonia! http://ccraftscollectibles.blogspot.com/ Does that mean that I get to list more?? I do enjoy weirdness.

#1- I am hooked on reading these 7 Weird Things lists just like I am hooked on American Idol, Survivor, and some TV program every single night of the week. I admit it, I live to Tivo

#2- I save up dirt. If I know that I have to clean for someone coming over, or my husband coming home from a business trip, I will ignore a glob of mess and wait to clean it right up before whatever event or visit comes. I don’t want to have to clean up then turn around and do it again. So I save it up and do it once.

#3- I am easily distracted and waste a lot of time, but when I work, I can zoom through and get more done in a day than some people do in a week, art wise.

#4- I used to make a ton of money doing murals, one day I made $1,800. But I am terribly afraid of heights and got tired of climbing around on scaffolding. Also I got tired of painting what other people wanted, I like painting what I feel like, then seeing if someone wants it or not. I tend to paint a LOT of free murals and faux finishes for family and friends, but take on very few paid jobs. And only if they are low- never scaffolding jobs!

#5- I don’t sort silverware. I dump the whole basket from the dishwasher into the drawer at once. Saves me a lot of time for goofing off or for painting or for singing to dorkies.

#6- I had a laundry room built right into my closet so I can pull things out of the dryer and put them into baskets on shelves so I don’t need to carry anything out of the room to put it away. I don’t fold anything that isn’t absolutely necessary either, it gets tossed into its own basket. Once again, think of all the time I save to goof off, paint, or sing to dorkies.

#7- I like to listen to rap music and can shock people with some of the lyrics I sing, when I don’t realize I am singing out loud in public. I am as big of a Michael Buble~ fan as I am a Ludacris fan. I have an odd taste in music, but mostly would rather listen to NPR while I work.

Rose # 9 and the Boss’s Feast

As I was flipping through blogs and reading the 7 Weird Things so many bloggers have listed (I am as hooked on those as I am on American Idol), I came across a beautiful blog in a language I couldn’t read. I left a comment anyway (I love to comment, if you have a blog, you might have noticed me, I always leave one, even if I have nothing really to say. I am a bit like that in conversations too).

Eva Agnes wrote back in English and was so nice and her phrasing is so cute. She featured some of my work on her lovely pages, thanks, Eva! http://evascountry.blogspot.com/ somehow, my pictures looked better on her site. I think it is her clean, Scandinavian style, I seem to clutter and gaudy things up on my blog by squeezing too much in.

Last night was the Feast for the Boss that I have been cleaning my house for. Well, for that and for the Birthday Bash on Saturday, I am throwing myself a party then. I love to have two parties in one week, that way all the prep for the first one carries over to the 2nd! One cleaning takes care of it all. If I waited a week for a 2nd party, my filth would all come sneaking back again.

Looks more like a ladies tea luncheon than dinner with the boss, doesn’t it?? I do like to set the table up pretty and will use any excuse. I’d never met him, hope he wasn’t overwhelmed by the rosey-girly-ness of the table. (the dark stuff on the tiny plate is balsamic vinegar and olive oil for dipping the bread, in the photo it just looks yucky, but it was really tasty and went great with the lasagna and raviolis).

I love these dishes, and the fact that they are all different colors so I can set a mismatched table. I found the set at a thrift store for $5 a plate, and they still had $25 price tags from the department store they were originally from on the backs.

Beth http://bethleintz.typepad.com/ gave me the cut glass wine glasses. She gives me piles of stuff she doesn’t like, but knows I love. Did I tell you she was a generous friend? You should go over to her house to do crafts, she has the best paper supply EVER and shares it. I think she is selling some at her Etsy shop too, if you want to see her stuff, there is a link from her site.

The aqua compote that the bread is in was one of my flea market bargains from my rainy day at Sparks. I got it for $2.

At Sparks I found this birdie vase too. I filled it with roses. I hit the rose bonanza again at the grocery store, $1.99 a dozen!! I bought 3 dozen and hope they will live through Saturday night too. I have a few in each room, its so good to have fresh flowers around. especially bargain blooms.

The party went well, even though our basement flooded and I was down there in 12" of water messing with the sump pump an hour before dinner.

I’m comfortable with entertaining and don’t get thrown easily. Also, I treat everyone the same, they are all big shots here at the cottage. But, I did go to a bit of extra trouble for the Boss’s Feast. You could tell it was a big evening because I

#1- fixed my hair

#2- wore shoes all night – inside my own house!

#3- served the plates instead of doing the meal buffet style like I usually do

I had the fairy grand baby all day before the party, but since I had made the lasagna and raviolis and set the table the night before, the party itself was pretty much on auto pilot. So, Sugar Wings and I went out to the studio. I gave her bottles of paint to play with and challenged myself to paint some roses in the short time I had before she got bored and needed me. Here is what I did, in under 15 minutes.

Back in Sparks, wonderful Sparks, on that rainy flea market day, I bought a giant set of vintage black tin containers for only $10. I will paint the base color on most of them, but didn’t have time while Sugar Wings was "helping" me for this one. Plus, doesn’t black make a pretty background for pink roses? If anyone wants to buy it, email me, it is only $15. I can sell things pretty reasonable because of my LIGHTENING SPEED.

May Bucket Giveaway Updates

This photo might explain how I lost the pendant- it is a view of the workroom part of my studio with the office I showed yesterday behind the french doors. Yep, there is a lot going on in this work spot.

I use lots of doors to make partitions in the room, it is just a big open space, about 1,000 sq feet. Great studio. I collect armoires to store my supplies in and have got it so organized I just want to squeal with joy. But then, I start on a project, halfway through, I start 2 or 4 more, and next thing you know, not a thing is in those wonderful armoires.

My black and white cabinet with hand painted roses holds my tie dye supplies and some tools.

The 3 big cabinets in this shot are full too as well as the old German trunk on top of the French vanilla colored cabinet. This view is from the front door of the room.

I keep a wicker rocker on the front porch of the studio to relax in when I need a break. I made the black shutters on the window out of boards I saved when we tore down an old garage. It was the first garage built in Douglas County KS and I thought they needed to be saved!

All the doors I use are great partitions, because they are portable. I can arrange and rearrange to my needs at the moment. Family reunion coming up? the room becomes a dining room with seating for 25. Painting party planned? I can set up card tables everywhere and friends can have a craft day.

I could have gone with indiviual rooms with solid walls when we built it, but I prefer the versatility of being able to change it to how I need to use it.

One more photo in my studio- the entry way to the back door has been painted to look like brick. Very easy, I tear a kitchen sponge the size of a brick, and dip it into a few paint colors at the same time, and it blends as it is sponged on.

Remember my beautiful swap gift from the May Day basket giveaway? It just got even better! Karin http://www.creativechaos.typepad.com/ sent me MORE! I got these two tags in the mail and promptly put them up on a shelf in my office. Thanks, Karin!

Which made me think about taking photos of the rest of my office instead of finishing the housecleaning that I have been putting off. It takes me days to clean because I get so sidetracked.

My office is a corner of my art studio and the walls of it are made up of old doors hinged together.

Here is a view of the outside, peeking in through a French door. I try not to block the light by hanging anything solid on the doors, so my sparkly K and an embellished frame are a perfect fit.

French doors (from a garage sale for $15) are the best, they keep the room from feeling too closed in. The gazebo thing is something my son and I made out of porch columns from a junk store for $6 each, some corner brackets and 2x4s.

The painting is a watercolor I did of the front of my studio. Did I mention that I adore my studio and spend all the time that I can out here? After years of using the kitchen table, or a card table in the guest room, or the garage- I am thrilled to have this space to work in.

The floors are cement that I have stained to give them some color. The rug is a vinyl floor cover remnant ($5) that I painted like stones, originally for an article I wrote for Romantic Country? Small Room Decorating? Can’t remember which one it was right now.

Having a computer right in the studio is way too convenient for goofing off and surfing blogs too. The room also has all of our home office needs, so I’ve tried to use attractive hiding places for all the necessities. Old suitcases, vintage paper covered boxes, parts of old dressers, etc.

For furnishings,I mosaiced the top of a narrow white cabinet I found at a garage sale for $2, used a $45 walnut drop leaf table for a desk, and the black hutch is another garage sailing find for $50- lots of space in it.

The shelf on the wall is an old chippy paint planter box I bought from Beth http://bethleintz.typepad.com/ and I like it so much, I don’t put much in it, I hate to cover it up. It has photos of Sugar Wings and of my Dad who passed away last year. (If you notice in the photo, I am in it- with ANOTHER hair color- and no paint on my clothes!!) the sign above the box "comfort & joy" is one that I painted, and it used to be the name of my shop.

The file cabinet is a new oak one that I painted white and distressed. As much as I like to use only vintage and used furniture, sometimes I have to be practical and a filing cabinet the right size was just not turning up for me, so I got a new one and made it look old.

One more thing I love about my office- I found this calender at Sentimental Journey (an antique shop full of bargains) with the month and day torn off to my birthday 5-5-58! Had to buy it, and it has a great pocket for stashing things.

An office isn’t that interesting, all the tech stuff and paperwork around, but I just don’t want to go and clean my house for the Boss’s Dinner Party Feast I have coming up tomorrow night. I was bored and avoiding work and I just happened to be in the office and started to take photos. It doesn’t take much to entertain or sidetrack me.

I do run on, don’t I? Well, I’ll keep going, the more I play around with this the less cleaning I have to face. No, wait, it will still be there, won’t it???

Two of my blogger friends asked about the shard jewelry I didn’t sell because of the art show raining out. so here are photos to shop from for them, if you are interested also, let me know. They are usually $28 each, but that is considering show fees, percentages paid to the fair, etc. So, blogging price to you guys? $20, what a steal!! The bails these hang from are sterling silver and the solder is all lead free.

Post Birthday Rainy Day Blues

Hand Painted Furniture

My art show, that I look forward to all year- is rained out today. And in the 46 year tradition of the show, this is the first year that we don’t have a rain date scheduled. Partially my fault, I am on the board of directors for the Art Guild that sponsors it and voted to not have a rain date because it is so much work to try to plan for 2 weekends instead of just one.

This rain is the kind that doesn’t let up, that steadily pours and pours and pours. Its gloomy and dark and has gone on for too long.

So I am cleaning today to get ready for the 2 parties I am throwing this week. Talk about feeling blue. I hate to clean. But, it does give me a chance to play with all my pretties, I get to re-arrange when I dust them.

Since I am feeling blue, I thought I’d cheer myself up by showing some blue stuff that is now dust free .

My mother loved butterflies and I always buy these S. American butterfly plates when I find them at the Goodwill in memory of Mom.

I painted this china cabinet for an article I wrote for Paint Magic magazine, that was out last summer. I have some of my favorite things in it, rose china lids from Italian dishes gathered up in an iron bowl that I painted white, some blue birdies, a blue beveled mirror that reminds me of my sisters, and a collage piece I did around a photo of my sisses and I. We were at a family reunion in S. Indiana and saw a ‘Downey’ street- my family’s last name! Had to have our picture taken in front of the sign, of course.

This close up is not clear. I am the one in the middle and I don’t have a twisted nose in real life, it is a glare, I think.

If you have noticed- in photos I have posted of myself on this site, my hair is always a different color. I think it is dark red in this one. It is a rare photo of me with no paint on my clothes too.

Another fave- I love to make "magic mirrors". I take old picture frames with curved glass and cut a mirror to fit into them, instead of putting a picture inside. These mirrors have a magical feel when you gaze into them and ask who is the loveliest of them all. Well of course, around here, the answer is: SUGAR WINGS!

Why do I wait till the last day to finish up before an art show??? It is my birthday and a beautiful day outside. I should plant flowers, or go for a walk or something other than make price tags!!

Oh well, we will celebrate my birthday tonight, we’re all going out to dinner. And I did get to do something fun, I covered this partial mannequin form with old papers, then set up a practice booth in my studio to see how it all fit together- a dry run for tomorrow.

If I were more efficient, and made price tags,as I was finishing the jewelry, or just did them and not fiddled with everything, it wouldn’t have taken all day today. But, how could I resist playing dress up with all the stuff I made and arranging it all?

I have very little artwork to sell, mostly jewelry. I made up about 100 or so note cards, some collage, some repros of my paintings. That will just have to do! It is getting late and almost time for birthday cake.

And anyway, looks like RAIN tomorrow. Might not even be a show.

Happy Birthday to Me, well almost

My Fairy Grand baby came by to spend the day and go to a birthday luncheon some best friends had for me. I dressed her up in this vintage hanky dress that was a gift from one of them.

Which brings me to being "tagged". I am supposed to tell you 7 weird things about myself. I asked friends and family for their opinions on the subject, and got a lot of the same sort of answers about my choice of wardrobe.

This photo of Sugar Wings and I going to a party might explain the comments I got from everyone. I got her all dressed up in a cute vintage dress, and I just wear my paint clothes. But I did put on lipstick, so that means, I am all dressed up! ( This photo was taken in my bedroom we are sitting in my favorite chair, it was only $34 at a junk store)

#1-Beth’s input on my weird habits is that I wear my paint clothes out with a mink coat. (It gets cold in Kansas!!)

#2-My sister, Bobbie Sue’s comment was that she can’t believe I go to the store in my slippers. And paint clothes. With a mink on.

#3-My other sister, Sissy (Sharon Ann) mentioned my habit of pulling off the closest table cloth, wrapping it around myself like a shaw and doing fortune telling, while calling myself "Madame Karkina."

#4-My handsome husband, Rich, and my youngest son, (Sugar Wing’s dad) both told me it was weird that I talk to our dorkies. I said, everyone who has a dog talks to it, but they said, yes that is true, but not the way I do it. Apparently, I talk to them a bit oddly? Mine involves long conversations and lots of singing with made up songs and rhymes. And I am tone deaf. But the fairy grand baby and the puppy love it.

That isn’t quite 7 since most friends agreed with Bobbie and Beth about the wardrobe, so I’ll add a couple from me.

#5-I turn 49 on May 5, but for the last few years, I have been telling people I am 54, so they think I look really good.

#6-Also, I never use recipes, and my meals never turn out the same twice, but I do have to say, I make a great soup out of anything that is in the fridge. So good, that I won’t let my family eat any until they call me the "Queen of Soup". Then, they are allowed to have some.

Poor little Sugar Wings might take after me a bit, look how messy her pretty dress ended up after we planted some flowers with Twinkle.

For my ROSE A DAY FOR 10 DAYS IN MAY- here is a pretty rose cup that Beth gave to me. She used to be a shabby chic-er with me, but has switched to a more mellowed neutral booth at the mall and now gives me pink stuff she doesn’t want! She is always generous anyway, has the BEST studio stock of vintage papers and goodies and always shares.

Speaking of sharing- Here is another rose, this one is black and white transferware. I mosaic-ed a table top with this pattern and had some left over, so today it is a necklace. And I want to share it with you.

This pendant is my birthday present to you tomorrow, when I pick an early prize (hey,its my contest, I can make the rules and pick prizes whenever I want!!)

May’s Days of Roses #3 and a Soggy Flea Market

Wow, we had a long, and lovely, but damp, day at the flea market in Sparks and White Cloud. Both towns were not full like they usually are due to the drizzle, but there was enough loot out to make it worth the trek to get there. Plus, it is an Event- with a capital E- for Beth http://bethleintz.typepad.com/) and I twice a year.

It was Twinkle’s first Flea Mkt and she was pretty popular. Beth and I decided we needed to hang a sign that said "Twinkle/ Girl/ 3mths old/ Dorkie/6 lbs when grown" because EVERYONE wanted to know.

She made some friends, and besides peeing on Beth once, and barfing on me three times (her first big car trip didn’t agree with her), I think she liked the day.

We didn’t buy much, only had to unload our carts once all day! Normally, we will make 3 or 4 trips to the car to empty out so we can refill.

I got this oval frame (to paint white and put a rose painting into), this pink bird vase, and a sparkly K. I tied the K onto my azalea pink shopping cart for the day. Now that I have it home, I’m not sure where I’ll need to use it, but do know that there is an important spot waiting for it somewhere.

A green bucket with just the right amount of rust, and a nice little box came home with me too.

My highlight of the day was finding jewels for $3 a scoop. I spent 20 minutes hand picking just the right ones to put into my scoop! It was a treasure hunt, digging through the bucket of plastic beads, broken bits and made in china crap to find enough delightful sparkles to fill a scoop. I don’t think, that even if I had enough time, I could have filled a 2nd scoop, the pickins were slim. I got all the ones that spoke to me. ( I did have the permission of the proprietor to hand pick, she didn’t mind at all. I think she was just happy that someone was shopping during the rain)

My biggest surprise of the day, is that I didnt’ buy a single thing with a rose on it!! Unusual for me. So, for Day #3 in my ROSE FOR A DAY FOR 10 DAYS IN MAY in honor of Caring Blogger’s Rose Day on May 10th- here is an oil painting I did a couple years ago of some white roses. (I saw a vintage painting in a book and stole the look,repainted it for myself, I’m afraid. – Hope I didn’t infringe on any copyrights!)

Playing Jewelry and BONUS PRIZES

Today I have been making jewelry for the art show on Sunday. It has been so long since I "played jewelry" -thats what my sister and I call it, when we make things- that I spent more time looking through my stash and admiring the bits and pieces than actually piecing things together.

I collect vintage jewelry to take apart and remake, and over the years have gathered up a few containers like these.

It takes a bit of admiring and enjoying for a while before I get down to business and start making new pieces from all the old ones.

Yesterday was painting day, I did a dozen or so mini paintings to make into more charms. Here are a few finished ones as well as a couple pair of earrings I put together from my vintage goodies stash.

The teacup mini is the one I made for myself. My sis, who likes to ‘play jewelry’ too, gave me the very old blue topaz stone I put on it.

There was a casualty yesterday. I didn’t plan to be painting, thought I was going to be making cards. But,I got sidetracked, and picked up a paint brush. Next thing you know, I forgot I am wearing my favorite shirt. I have a bad habit of wiping my brush on myself as I work.

The habit got started when I was up on 20 foot high scaffolding or on a ladder painting murals. It was easier to use my shirt instead of a rag. Now, I just can’t help it, its automatic. And sometimes I forget what I am wearing. Sadly, I have more clothes that look like this, than look normal.

Here is #2 in my Rose for a Day for 10 Days- another little canvas I painted yesterday. It was a gift in my May basket swap from Karin http://www.creativechaos.typepad.com/.

Hopefully, tomorrow’s Rose for day #3 will be something from my annual Sparks and White Cloud flea market trip!! But the weather looks yucky, hope I don’t get too soaked there to find a pretty rose to show you.

Happy May Day! check out all the pretty May Baskets at: http://www.artsymama.blogspot.com/. She planned and arranged this fun swap. I am enjoying my May Basket swap gift from Karin at: http://www.creativechaos.typepad.com/. Karin was thoughtful to include tiny canvases for me to paint, so here is my May Day painting of roses in a basket to go along with the theme! Next to it, is the lovely basket (box) she made for me, I am using it as a center piece on my studio dining room table. (I am lucky enough to have a giant studio, divided up into areas for multi functions!!!)

The rest of my studio doesn’t look as nice…. Thats what happens when I work on jewelry, paintings, charms, and who knows what all at the same time.

Whats in the pink bag under the work table at my feet?

Twinkle is using her carry bag as a doggy bed. She must think it is pretty cozy. I hope she cooperates this well on Thursday when I go to Sparks and White Cloud for the giant annual flea market and take her along in this bag!!

This is a close up of my painting. It is on my gifted canvas, and is painted with acrylic craft paints. One trick I use with acrylic paint, is to paint in layers, blow drying in between and adding clear coats of polycryllic. After it was done, I coated it with crackle glaze to age it, and covered that with a light coat of umber paint. Over that went more clear coat. I’d say it took me a couple of hours to do, thank goodness for blow dryers, or I’d go crazy waiting for things to dry! I get impatient and just want to get it done!! Of course, I never have a blow dryer in the house, it is always out in the studio. Explains why you don’t see ME in these photos.
