RV Life is Better When Things are Pretty

When we first got to Florida, the beach was a little chilly, but since then the weather has been ideal.

And I am so happy that I cozied up the little camper with new linens, paint and curtains.

Dorothy likes it too.

The other dogs like their new bunk bed/kennel that we created for them.

DD7CD0F0-68FD-44F5-9818-66272E3186EB

My only issue is in trying to hang the artwork I brought along.  Command hooks didn’t support them, even though they are lightweight.  I did figure out that a binder clip on the ugly valance will hold a picture over the windows, but I can’t get anything to work on the walls.

I’d also like to get rid of those ugly valances, but that’s another day.

3385860F-5CFF-4F24-84E5-4F9A421136D1

New curtains cover the top bunk, and I ordered cushion covers for the top pillows on the bench.  Now, they aren’t exactly my first choice in fabric, but they are what I could get and they are better than just plain dark brown.

3F7EF3B7-B1E3-45E2-BE8D-2F76F1F3FB24

This is the door we made to turn the bottom bunk bunk bed into a dog crate.  My husband had to do some rebuilding and boosting the opening to make the door fit snugly and securely. I am so glad he did, what a helpful addition to camper life.

A4180A2D-0814-48D4-9707-62CC7BF5881F

One change that was important to me, was covering the inside of the glass doors so that I don’t have to look at all of our stored goods.  What a simple fix for something that irritated me every time we used the rv.  I cut foam core to fit and wrapped it into the curtain fabric, then attached it to the interior of the windows.

I am much happier without the cluttery view of peanut butter, cracker boxes, and stacks of dishes.

93095768-068B-474C-9275-7E36D0D4D0A7

The sea glass blue paint in the bathroom has made a world of difference to me.  The previous blah brown wall paper was a downer.

F147FB2B-6F10-490D-A5A0-3132BD567908

So was the icky brown shower curtain.  This one is put together (I wouldn’t call what I do real sewing) from curtains my sister gave to me when she redecorated.

We use the campground bath houses instead of our teensy shower, so I made use of the space by transforming it into a closet.  If I do ever need to use it as intended, it’s pretty simple just to move the stuff out again, nothing is permanent.

Steampunk Vintage Violins

guncles, how to's, Travel, vintage paper/collage art

2FA67FC9-4797-4E86-B558-AD63898C897E

This could be one of my all time favorite projects.  Randy had a violin he wanted to possibly modpodge, but then we got to talking and thinking and planning and brainstorming and getting excited and going through his stashes and well, it blossomed.

AC713374-6E1B-43E3-9B45-DF9FC5A76A4E

He had so much cool stuff to work with!  Some was from sister, Terry, who sent him the gears and such, some was goodies he’d been collecting.

CFFA7C60-19C0-49CC-9D66-208A12FACD41

We painted the violin black then glued down some lace for texture and painted it too.

98B3AFC5-9EC0-457E-9D2A-5781D0F63318

Next we picked out what we wanted to add to it, painted those bits and bobs all black too, including some small frames we placed vintage photos in, then covered in paper glaze.

717AC210-55E3-47B4-934C-98D185BBA589

The mat black (chalk paint, so no priming was needed) was very stark, and needed some dimension, so I dry brush silver over the high points of each item.

751D9E6F-5B6D-4975-90BD-83A12D6360C2

Once everything was all glued into place, it got aged with more dry brushing of a bronze mixed with sepia (acrylic craft paint).

7A655271-82CF-4F6B-B83E-0209CE9DEFB5

The brown/bronze really topped it off. (The white is wet glue that will dry clear)

F07DA25D-C176-48F0-9BB2-9CD5ABD4105E

We loved making this so much, we couldn’t wait to start another! This time, ivory with the addition of some sheet music.  I still used the gears, frames, keys, etc, but also embellished it with some vintage rhinestone jewels and pearls that I had with me.

Because who doesn’t travel across country in an RV with four dogs and not bring vintage sparklies  to craft with?

Hello from Guncleland!

guncles, Travel

We are zig zagging around Florida and visiting Guncles between other adventures.  They have been kind enough to let us park our camper in their driveway, fill up their four dog house with our four dogs too, and feed us great seafood meals!
Plus crafting, did I mention crafting?!? THE BEST PROJECT EVER!

And the boys have taken turns visiting us at the campground in St Augustine too.

At the moment (and actually throughout the visit) my internet hasn’t been that great, but I have a little window now where it’s cooperating.  So I thought I’d slip in some quick pics of how pretty their house looks, all decorated for a fancy, fancy, foo foo Parisienne styled dinner they served us.

More later when I get another opportunity.

A giant jewelry box

cottage, Hand Painted Furniture, jewelry

DD6FC70F-1B20-443F-9494-54547D0893A4

Recently I had a mini redo of the bedroom.  (It felt like a huge redo, that was a lot of painting, and I keep forgetting that I’m a senior citizen now). Some things were moved around and we had a nice, big open space by the door.

hahahahaha

1CC78783-0A50-4994-B0DD-8476999BFDF5

That open space didn’t last long!

But I don’t think it is over crowded now with this new cabinet there.  Plus, I really needed it. Really, really!

I might’ve been a bit rude to Rich when he complained, I told him that his office and the hearth room were both filled with nice and open spaces, he should go enjoy those.

It could be that as I get deeper into my senior years, I get crankier.  Plus I feel like I know what I am doing, and have a good concept of design.  I knew it would fit just fine.  He needed to trust me.

34F92C72-15C0-4E04-B313-D460FA6C590B

But yes, before it was painted it did seem to take up more space than after I lightened it up.

019E500B-3490-437C-BC1D-8F5FAE4FC784

I chose a few neutral wallpapers to line the interior, and used a French vanilla paint on the rest.

EA2565E3-C5D9-4896-B0DE-DD0A3650ECB5

The top half holds my jewelry.  I have so many pieces that don’t get worn, because they were packed away in a dark chest.  Now that they are out in the open, I’ll bet I wear them more.

D98D9F32-62B2-4F28-947A-A96B05BCA2B1

These jewelry store display boxes started out black.

037E49CB-77E3-4DCF-9AD7-3A6C9F60B3AA

I dry brushed them white and added lace across the front before filling and stacking them up.  I might make pretty labels too.

3AE84896-49B7-4420-86BD-D5886CB16584
The lower shelves have my lacy sweaters, scarves, and tops.  I’m thinking that having them where they can be seen will also remind me to wear them more often.

And it might remind me not to buy any more cream colored lace pieces of clothing because apparently I have quite a few.

A craft from the past

Hand painted

1984EE1C-2F21-4B3A-9BFB-6AF8D699F5EC

Years ago, I supplemented our income by selling hand painted tee and sweat shirts.  I remember lots of angels, fairies, heart shaped wreaths with ribbon, and my fave at the time- iris.

210623E5-A915-44FF-9F0C-2CE8C69A781A

Last week, I got a new cabinet and that set off a domino effect of cleaning out drawers and closets to move things around.  I saw this decades old sweatshirt and slipped it on.  It still fits and I thought I might want to wear it, but I’m kinda bothered by necklines that high. my saggy throat prefers scoop or ve necks.

(I’ll show more about the cabinet later on).  You can see the shirt in the mirror.

3657337A-5ED0-4BA8-B307-1D6D176B482A

So for now, it went right back in the drawer.  I should donate it, or find someone who’d wear it.

Or possibly turn it into a pillow?  Would that be weird?

Genuine gemstone mosaic

cottage, flowers, how to's

D4D06862-655B-41A4-AC4F-7322B6D43208

This mosaic backsplash felt like a huge job, but actually was completed in bits and spurts over the course of a week.

0177FD34-0F2D-40B5-AA76-BC3EC09076BA

The boards were set out on my table like a jigsaw puzzle that I pieced together whenever I had a spare hour of time.

First, I measured the spot, then I had Masonite cut to fit the area.  I drilled holes where I wanted to screw it into the wall, and left those spots blank while adding stones.

Then, I used a sharpie to draw a design that I promptly ignored and started placing stones in posy shapes.

5C344311-8A23-4A43-B319-71E2BA23568A

I started with the largest flowers, working out from the center of the board, where the faucet of the sink would be.  Then spaced large flowers throughout the Masonite.

Next came medium flowers, then small ones, and finally the darker pearls, petals, and leaves.

BB68B3A7-3CD2-4B58-9096-96C1DA418170

The stones are glued down with silicone.  After the adhesive dried I brought the mosaic in to see how it was going to look and decide on grout color.  I had been proud of myself for having a continuous design in the corner from piece to piece, but didn’t allow for the thickness of the beads.

oops

96156794-69B5-483D-8B44-017694564A7F

When I first measured the materials, the boards butted up against each other, now with grout and beads, they don’t.  Oh well, caulking fixed the crack, and it doesn’t really bother me too much that the backsplash is about a 1/2” longer than the vanity top.

C1160291-7FD6-4AD4-92E2-43721FE8E0D9

Grouting was HARD.  Really hard, because of the different heights of the stones.

88F320EB-77EF-476A-BC8C-2A1E796531A7

I worked on 6” sections at a time so I could get each bit polished up nice before it dried too hard.

C35FF963-D08F-4B5A-96E3-25192E1AA853

The grout is Bone, and I used a matching caulk to seal the Masonite, trim out the edges, and cover the screw holes.  Honestly, I think the flowers would’ve stood out better with a darker grout, more like the color of the board they were on, but I needed it lighter to flow with the rest of the room.  And that was important.

Grout can be such a mystery to me.  I don’t do enough mosaics to know exactly how the added background color will affect the piece.  No matter what color though, it sure makes it look finished and professional.  Adding grout to a mosaic is the equivalent of adding mulch to a flower bed.  It just makes it look more pulled together.

96514414-1878-44E5-AA89-C3950711A3D5
My sis, Terry, has recently moved and cleared out her craft supplies before going.  She gifted me with an amazing stack of jewel filled boxes, that inspired this creation.  I had many of the beads myself, but getting her largesse gave me the idea to make a project with it instead of necklaces.

I thought I’d feature a few flowers and use mosaic glass as a background. But once I got going, I loved the gemstones so much, that I made the entire piece with just those.  I found bags of real pearls and some other extras at an antique store nearby, and that was just what I needed to complete it.  I would hate to know what these gems would cost retail!  Terry and I had both shopped wholesale markets and catalogs for the ones we had.  Still, this would’ve cost me a pretty penny if I hadn’t been gifted with such pretty beads.  Thanks, Terry!

Here is a list of what I used:

  • labradorite
  • opal
  • moonstone
  • mother of pearl
  • pearl
  • larimar
  • herkimer diamond
  • quartz
  • agate
  • amazonite
  • topaz
  • aquamarine
  • shell
  • flourite
  • abilone

An AirBnB gone wrong, way wrong

family, Travel

810AE9BC-733D-46E9-96CB-0C8B536E224F

We had plans for a Florida adventure, but hadn’t quite packed yet when our boy (in North Carolina) asked if we wanted to meet somewhere near Chattanooga on our way down.
F2F16C89-4E9B-447D-9029-D4C04DF28716

Then we heard that a big snowstorm was headed toward Kansas, and we’d be dealing with that across a couple states as we drove.  So, we threw whatever we could remember to take into the camper and snuck out before the roads got bad.

E779585E-8348-43E0-B3D6-CD77F4A17589

We found a “riverfront log cabin” online and made plans to meet our son.

Well, the first glimpse of the rundown neighborhood didn’t scare us too much, but maybe it should’ve?

8854311D-180A-4BA4-B4E5-C45E7BEC8A2A

The cabin itself was clean, had a place for the dogs to run, a view of the river, and a nice trail to walk on, so basically, it suited our purposes so I am not going to complain too much.  For a spur of the moment find, and a bonus night with our son, we took what we could get.

5593E143-A05D-4680-BCC4-BF64E7B8758E

But the place was weird and slightly creepy.

43F87371-F890-411E-848E-4A14CCD210D5

Like, why are there so many bolts on the door that had been repaired with duct tape?

91040409-E53D-4DA3-A654-EE159F37C7AA

And the disturbingly dark and dismal artwork.

6B381403-AF27-45EE-A5C4-74905EE23CF9

These paintings could possibly have been cool in another setting, but man, they implied a sense of doom here.

53FB0551-72FF-4BC7-B87E-A9AB353E1E41

The listing noted that there was a great showers with plenty of hot water.  He neglected to say that the on demand hot water heater was the size of a laptop, and would go from boiling hot to icy cold in about one minute flat.  If you could play a game of hopscotch in the shower, you could manage to dart in and out to catch the seconds when the temps were just right.

06839485-46CD-4047-BF46-B57C7E23563D

The owner also mentioned that we shouldn’t go in the “attic”.  Don’t worry, mister, I was not tempted.

I was very, very concerned about that branch though…..

Was it a perch?

And for what?!?!?

Did I mention that this perch was over the bed?  Did something LIVE in that attic and crawl out onto the branch to hang over us as we slept?

513AB939-674E-4D3D-A0B9-E17BB92A83C1

I can see this place as a fisherman’s camp, maybe.  My husband didn’t think it was nearly as bad as I thought it was.  (He is wrong, it was bad.)

0982757C-73B2-4B2A-BFEB-F0D9204CE91F

The view was nice, but the riverbank was full of trash plus some unnerving abandoned homeless camps, so I was not all that comfortable going out at night to take the dogs out.  And the porch had a motion detector light that only was set off coming up, not going down the steps. The side without a railing had a big drop off that you could not see in the blackness of night.

D86ECE47-7ED4-4AD6-85DF-AA3F45111FFA

And did anyone live in that hornet’s nest?

14460B6C-B904-4B1E-8A59-9548DD831146

That said, we had a great afternoon with our boy, and a wonderful hike on Lookout Mountain.

CA5FD8AC-5529-4AF2-9D9E-56C6A469297A

We had planned to stay two nights but just couldn’t. Plus it was going to rain and I could not picture myself stuck in that storage shed, I mean cabin, with four muddy dogs in a thunderstorm.

So we drove to Jax and the Guncles took us in. And while I always love staying with the Guncles, I appreciated their beautiful home and welcome even more than than ever!

Happy birthday, Mom

family, Hand painted

06974400-842D-471A-98BD-442269A4FE07
In a recent post, I reminisced about my mom’s pie dough goodies.  The same day that I was writing it, I cleaned out a closet and came across this dress that mom had made for me.  She has been on my mind a lot lately, after finding this.

Well, she is often on my mind, just like Ryan. Sometimes the worst part about losing a person is not being able to let them about something that you know would’ve brought them a smile.  And she really would’ve enjoyed hearing about me trying this on after years of it being tucked away.

Today would’ve been her birthday.
68786785-BEFB-4111-9B0F-A3B53E8383CB

The dress was a collaboration.  I hand painted some fabric with peachy irises and she stitched a full skirted dress from it.

DB394F75-8D06-4545-8F8C-0EF054FF233C

The best part is this gorgeous, hand crafted belt.  She even covered a buckle in the fabric.  Seeing how pretty this is, really makes me miss having a waistline!

The dress itself has an elastic waist and still fits.  But it isn’t the same without this lovely belt, which would need another a few more holes punched in it to fit.

547AEE32-3B8B-497B-854D-50B530A5C010

Oooh, the buttons!  All are vintage glass.  Green like emeralds, my birthstone.

34F61614-600C-4F93-8002-9FD45EAADE8B

She could sew anything for me with just a description, no pattern. As a child, I used to point to outfits in a magazine and she’d whip them up, with Barbie clothes to match.

Sadly, I went through a snobbery stage as a teen and would not wear home sewn clothes.  What a jerk!

CDAF3855-E88C-4AFE-89BC-F13CC39098BF

But as I got older, I appreciated all of the sundresses, lined jackets, winter coats, and shorts she would make for me all through the 80s.  Not to mention the clothes she made for my kids, and the quilts covering all of our beds.  And the perfectly tailored slipcovers for my couch.

436DCEBB-9B1D-40E6-8110-939FE7D7992A

Her ability to create something beautiful and functional from rolls of fabric by designing her own patterns was quite a skill.  The math that went into that, along with the vision is impressive.

154E3904-1489-47AD-AC06-E18C9593DCE0

Plus, I always knew that as she made a piece, she thought of the person it was for.  I keep that in mind now myself, as I craft my own projects for people I care about. They are in my heart as I create for them.

As I know that I was in hers.

A Bridgerton Art Event!

Travel, vintage paper/collage art, We're having a party, Workshops

05EEFBDF-73CF-4168-BA5C-936B0F78D5ED

I am sooooooooo excited to announce this tidbit of wonderful news.

5FD4A5F0-E9E8-4736-AE82-F3A36C30BDD6

I’ve known about it for a few weeks and felt like Lady Whistledown hanging on to a juicy morsel.  No wait, she doesn’t keep secrets does she?  She is the opposite.

1B411678-2273-4D26-914E-DDD58F49EE64

Recently hearing that the second season of Bridgerton was coming in the not too distant future, I was already pumped.  Then this news? Woo hool!

The first season of this racy, period piece had to be the very most beautiful show on tv.  I could watch it over and over just for the fabrics alone.  Then, the scenery? Masterfully done, mesmerizing sets that are so lovely, who cares that there is a plot?

But then again, there is a plot, and such a fun one that I immediately read every book in the series including the prequels. Did you know that each novel was amended to add a chapter that visits the couple years after the story?  I loved that part.

Having seen the series first, I could picture the beauty of the gowns and houses as I read the books. The visuals in the show were pure perfection.  And who else do we know that can accomplish that level of gorgeousness?  My beautiful buddy, Jenn Hayslip, who leaves a trail of beauty in her wake every where she goes.  Like King Midas and the gold, her touch magically turns anything into scrumptiousness.  If anyone can bring a Bridgerton event into fruition and do it justice, it is her.

I cannot wait to see what she does.  And I am so honored to be a part of it!  If I wasn’t teaching, I’d have been the first to buy a ticket.

DF2714B3-829E-4346-8AFE-75EEC2F22376

It will be October 6th – 9th, 2022 in Charleston, SC (And what a beautiful city to spend time in.)

The event will be smaller and more intimate in size. It will take place in Jenn Hayslip’s home,

The Chantilly Rose House

(And oh my gosh, I can’t wait to see that palace!)

Jenn says-

“A full weekend event will include workshop classes, tea luncheon, shopping, formal dress evening soiree kick off party, giveaways, and much more!

I have two incredible artist Karla Nathan, and Lori Oles whom will be teaching beautiful elegant

regency themed projects.

Details and registration coming very soon!

Who is ready to dress up, sip tea, create, and discuss Lady Whistledown’s latest social gossip?

All the wonderful fanciful details and registration will be shared very soon!

Happy Creating Friends!”
