An Abundance of Thoughtfulness

The Peeps visiting me for a Snowbird’s Song, came bearing gifts.  Lori Oles created this gem for me from rough cut garnets and vintage treasures.

E51FAB9F-152B-44AF-ADBC-4BE88210A365

For the tweets and gifts , I hand dyed fabric bags, and placed them out on the seats the night before the party like hanging stockings on the mantel on Christmas Eve.

5143D8BD-0A2B-4A94-B15E-3A332825611C

Just like dozens of jolly St Nicks working their magic, the joyful Peeps over-stuffed the bags with delightful gifts.

There was an array of hand made gifts, treats, mini kits, art supplies and more.  Generosity times ten.

Gail made these itsy bitsy stocking brooches.

465B35B6-4A5D-41B8-B4E4-FD1650ECF232

Terri made multiple versions of this cottage tree ornament for everyone.  This is the one I received.

07B2ECC2-8197-4615-A0C0-3FA198AF1116

Our Southern belle friend, Lulu gifted everyone with jewels and beautiful baubles.

27865592-267A-4E1E-863E-8D0383116241

This is the special one she made for me.

B94C4E8C-5FE8-4966-A1F1-AB907CBF9ECC

My Sis, Terry also brought jewelry.  Hers was sterling with genuine stones, Nora chose moonstone earrings that matched a necklace she had brought with her.

B42EF6BF-4A9E-41DA-AF49-4963BA9F3FF5

Terry brought a special gift for me, my favorite chocolates, from See’s.

E87FAAC3-DCDB-4D93-8DB6-3431F7667D31

She also brought a gift for my husband, a wooden golf cart handcrafted by her husband, Dale.  The tiny wheels actually turn, this is adorable.

71927EEB-07BD-4E81-AEBF-D02CC76ADA27

I was blessed to get many special treats myself.  Like this nest filled with felted eggs from Kim.

435263FA-A125-47C4-B34E-D67EDE22D00D

There was so much generosity flowing my way that I wanted to savor the packages, and waited to open them after everyone had left. This sachet and bird are from Maggie.

53DE66B9-28B3-4B21-AF88-ED05A9527EDF

When the guests were gone, the house was feeling empty and lonely.  I cheered myself up by going through the thoughtful gifts and finding the perfect spots to use them in my home.  This pearl encrusted nest from Suzanne went with my nature inspired tree.

F60A7DCA-EFD4-4214-9D32-4EF579E1E457

The chocolate bar shaped Oklahoma was a perfect fit for my belly… and the ornie that Teresa gave to me with it went on the tree in my studio.

C3CAD10C-7CF0-4355-8D0E-BCD734200D9A

Jeannie gave me this hat that fits like a warm glove, ideal for cold, Kansas winters.

20025D5D-B133-4BBB-822A-D1E49E5F9DBC

Jane knows my love of hats, and brought a bag filled with vintagey floral ones to play with.

02044024-2D3B-4750-A3C0-A7D6041C8587

Carol gave me luscious supplies to play with too.  And European chocolates.

D135E83F-4ED1-4737-99D7-9698CBD228B7

Connie and Nancy brought a pumpkin festival of bath products that I am working my way through and enjoying this autumn.

B9149BAD-FAAF-40FE-9FAF-A1AD951CC2C2

Linda gifted me with lavender honey products that look really pretty in my guest bath, but I think I will set them aside to use in late February when I need to remember that winter is not forever.

289971F6-76CE-4779-896F-6192AD562B58

And was gifted with vanilla scented creams to brighten the holidays.

938AD2C8-27DA-473D-8F6E-3B9B4681B92F

Tami crafted this pink reindeer diorama that now sits on the table next to my cozy chair that I watch tv from.

CD3E70B3-71BE-4991-BF28-6ED661CFA69A

Across from me on the coffee table, I keep this creation from Lesa.

3B132D06-60DC-4B32-A2AA-475CA224FA90

Seriously, the generosity the group showed to each other and to me was over the top.  I did not get photos of everything, and hope that I don’t offend anyone by not posting photos of the bounty they provided.

62F3A902-904E-4302-93C6-5CCE0A3EC703
But after seeing the warm hearted sharing, I do not think that they are the types who would be upset.  These gifts were given for  heartfelt reasons, not done to show off.

D56472C2-47F8-4F69-8A8E-736602584532

Nora hand wove this bracelet, and every time I wear it, it will feel like an embrace from my friends.

F1AC74E3-5CEA-495A-B5FC-949116AEED25

All of the presents, for the group, for the door prizes, and the personal ones for myself were greatly appreciated.

We had enough door prize donations for everyone to get one, plus grand prizes, and a few more rounds of gifts from the prize table, so that some people got more than one.

7C192926-69E9-4A7A-9DB8-4B543F378CAF

Beth’s traditional needlework apron is always a coveted prize.

The excitement from the Peeps who give the presents is equal to those who get them.  I love the ones they give to me, but the biggest gift of all is the generosity I see them sharing with each other.  I am quite appreciative with the jovial atmosphere and happy gift giving between them.

Thank you, all!

After our lesson from Lesa with the magnificent swan, we were ready for something more laid back.  Her class was 4 hours, with a lunch break, and my Angelique the Aviary Queen was a simple task to fill the rest of the day.

8CB2ED33-D6C2-4908-8F7D-5ED4E33A24AA

Here is one in progress.

ACEA491F-8044-494B-90D7-A0886BF3782E

The Peeps made some very pretty angels, ready for the holidays.

F068C80F-EE87-45F0-B4CC-FF2CE2258595Sunday was an ornament day.

51B2D329-2DB2-42D0-B75C-52D22BBE2536

We had three, one hour classes.

8A5E817D-ECCD-4D3C-8DFD-52AD6C2A9EB7Lori Oles crafted beauty from pipe cleaners and scraps of fabric. By the way, people raved to me about her clear cut, no nonsense teaching style.

And she is a powerhouse.  That lady pitched in and helped me above and beyond anything I would ever ask of her!

A715D6D1-EDE7-4839-AA25-60CD9A1D9E1C

My 2nd class was an updated take on the old fashioned styrofoam ball ornaments from the 60-70s.

B760F9F3-0BC4-487F-A241-395BC46D6B97

And Beth’s was a needlework ornie.

746D6A26-DDD1-435D-B95D-4A2B5EFE0CD5

The three classes were called, Snow Blossom, Snowball, and Snowdrop.

89838E37-B4FB-42C6-AD4D-C3900D4FF82C

Twinkle joined us for some of the classes, but preferred napping on Susie’s bag to getting any real work done. She spent some time lap hopping too and got plenty of cuddle time.

AB26A556-55FB-44DF-8537-DD0BE99F230F

There were lots of different takes on all of the projects, that is always my favorite part.

3C460C22-5A7C-4448-84EB-AAF614FB371C

I love seeing how each artist makes the project to suit themselves.

EF20751A-84E9-44D5-85CC-4202172A6F27

We spent the afternoon delving into piles of supplies to foof up what we started on, finish the swan, or craft something one of a kind.

96B768F6-619B-4570-9AB6-4DCD40A0A814

Examples of what could be done with the provided supplies were hung to view, and advice or help was offered.  But mostly people just puttered and played.

AAF48AFE-AB3F-4B99-B4F5-6A9A7A41F541

For those who wanted more structure, bottle brush tree/tart tin kits were available too.

8F2B15C0-FDDC-4402-8BF9-A69B57979C58

After seeing all of the lovely ways that the teacher’s kits were made up, I look forward to studio time where I get to create my own versions, they looked fun.

46D720AF-3EE2-4028-9AB5-9AFD87662758

Thanks to my fabulous teachers, Beth Leintz, Lori Oles, Jenn Hayslip, and Lesa Dailey!

And to Guncle Randy along with honorary guncle, Jason, for all of the heavy lifting, laughter, and good food.

76BB8F8A-2638-4C42-98A7-3E0F6F717E84

Terry deserves a huge thank you for her magical cupcakes, generosity, and kitchen/vendor night help.

A95B2E8F-B170-43EB-BFC0-1D34D6F2B438My long time friend, Angie, made use of her extensive shopkeeping skills on vendor night too.

09059ABC-9CFF-4CF4-BA25-484150777E70

We had a creative, excited, laughing, talented, friendly flock of no drama buddies grace the studio with their loveliness.

And I appreciated each and every one of them.

Seven Swans A Swimming

95ABC35A-16C5-47CD-98E6-258B7E7FCD5A

This is Lori Oles’ take on our first class of the weekend, Lesa Dailey’s “Seven Swans A Swimming”.  And as With all of her projects, it has her own spin on it.

31FF2387-702E-4878-A599-C4B87D3ECFB9

Here is how Lisa Phillipi finished hers, it is tucked away with her other completed projects and they all look so pretty together!

96E67C59-13D3-47A5-AD3F-390E5D446536

This swan was not easy.  I did see some struggles in the early stages, but it looked like everyone got through it, at least to the point where the decorating could be finished at home.

3217E723-9944-4BBF-9C90-99C8D2740500

As I watched them work, I was struck with what a feat of engineering this was for Lesa to create.  It was not top heavy, it stood up nice and tall, and there were many steps to get through.

61DE02C4-118D-4476-BC98-889E89FCCF6B

Seriously, that woman goes beyond artist, to designer, and creative engineer.

I find her extremely impressive.

98D6112B-D6A5-4F96-A559-8D56FD634EC4We had a couple of parties too.

84221B63-FD7E-4256-9EEA-CFAC00C515BA

The first night, we gathered for homemade, French bread pizza, cupcakes and caramel apple sangria.

DAC94EA3-1CE1-4AE0-865D-091873613748

Terry made the cupcakes and people were still talking about them days later, they were so good.

Jenn Hayslip led us in an adorable make and take.

Darling!

B8803B31-FAF3-4930-B2FC-593A12D374D1

Terry and Lori made up some appetizer trays while I baked Brie.

Good friends who help out over and above what was asked for are a rare blessing, aren’t they?

2E278578-EEBE-4FA9-9DC7-A6898D985D82

After eating and make’n take’n, we had a diorama Swap hosted by Tami.

EFD2B944-82D1-47C6-A8F7-D1F608A37502We even had Randy play Santa so the Peeps could whisper what they wanted for Christmas into his ear.

43A195D9-48C9-4B32-8ABD-6DA35D36496C

Saturday night was dinner, shopping, and sparkly wine.

9B8F1E47-0447-49E9-BEA6-4C67E93C82DB

Dessert was cake truffle eggs and white chocolate, coconut nests.

59ECE690-16E2-471D-BF5A-25304FE78D7C

After that was some shopping.

A1209DB6-7EA5-461B-B8C5-9D3B88645799

My garage got a makeover for that night.

A04E0B08-DA28-48BC-9E74-A0EC34B127BE

It was festive and full of good deals, pretty things, and vintagey wonderfulness.

6137FF32-1004-4418-8F19-EA13BBB414F9

I will miss having the room this pretty.

DB33BA05-4312-4222-940C-A9184A32689E

No worries about that yet, for now it is still set up…

3B26D101-EE61-4DFA-B597-8950134DB677

Which maybe was not the best thing on a snowy day when my car probably would’ve enjoyed being tucked into a warm garage.

Oh well, sooner or later, the carriage will turn back into a pumpkin.

Next time, I will have photos from the classes.

A Snowbird’s Song 2019- ready for friends

bird song art event

BE31464D-0247-47CD-A6E5-E08832F086F7

Our gathering last weekend was so much fun.  I hope the Peeps enjoyed it as much as I did!

FE62AD54-0E25-40C4-84D3-F65AB9FA3AAF

My studio was all gussied up in advance, happily awaiting everyone’s arrival.

A6E9832B-1180-4484-9814-FCD1266EA494Instead of tablecloths, this year I use brown paper and painted on swirls of blizzardly snow with white birds.

0EC08D5D-7877-4726-BEB2-4BE8AAE832BB

I don’t do centerpieces, the tables are full enough with lamps and supplies.  I did add some birdies wherever I could and tucked the washy wipes into pretty containers.

9BF4FBDA-3682-4DCD-9D8E-52173865A983

The name tags were hung on a straw wreath, wrapped in batting and lace.  It was hung on the treat cabinet door and did double duty, as a way to hand out the tags and a decoration.

1E4A86E0-EA16-4071-94F4-CA7099B4E58EThe tags themselves were a two-fer.  Once the event was over, the name could be removed and the wreath brooch could be worn as a festive lapel pin during the holidays.  It was made from a 1950s tinsel garland, a bit of the “good stuff”.

B6E643FE-ED69-4773-9E61-14FB54F50160

While the end of October is pretty early to decorate for Christmas, I was happy I had done it early.

B351675B-6B6B-4F89-AE33-064B6A7D22FD

I have never been a procrastinator, but this year I was even more on the ball than usual.

6343E33D-EA36-4008-B3EC-490C0FD1330E

Which was very lucky because I was hit with a stomach bug that knocked m flat on my back before the event.  Maybe it was more like a bug hitting a windshield and I was the bug.

88D566DF-0E5C-4C9B-902F-4841229F3C04

Knowing that the rooms were ready, the food was prepped, Randy and Terry were on the way, I told myself to not worry, just sleep it off and quarantine myself for 24 hours.  I made all sorts of plans for the worst case scenario.

D1382E8A-6187-462D-95B7-5390F52757E2

If I didn’t get better in time, my friends could teach my classes, my family could feed everyone, I could go to a hotel to keep anyone else from getting sick.

A548F632-B3EF-4196-A77B-44D9FBBF7FF7

I was able to relax and rest knowing that not only was I prepared for guests, I had the world’s best helpers to take over for me if needed!

5697C43D-9BC3-4062-A0F6-FA1C3F618B3D

The rest helped, I was out of bed and back to myself in no time.  No one else caught it, so it must have been something I ate.

D2DB8849-F6BC-460D-B496-94975CB6BC52

Building my kits and making examples early in the summer was a blessing too. With all that happened to our family in the last few months, I could never have been ready in time if all of that was still waiting to be done.

C4111DBD-343C-4B72-9DB8-C2ECE638BEB6

My world is much more serene if I plan ahead and am ready before scheduled.  I was able to not only have the unexpected recovery time that I needed, I was able to look forward to welcoming everyone instead of running myself ragged until they got here.

54A19434-1EB3-4A7A-B4FB-B07314B707A8

Also, I owe a big thanks to my teachers and helpers who I knew I could count on to be wonderful!

FBA502B8-3FC5-4288-9EE5-1F9207B9F719

And they were, I was thrilled with the whole weekend.  With their help, it was the best!

Also, a big thanks to my Peeps, It was lovely to have them come to visit me in Kansas. I’ll have more photos of the event itself next.

A Failed Attempt at being a Fairy God Mother

fairies, how to's, Travel

ED6C09F9-873E-412D-9EC1-76D30E7D457C

This is who I was going for as my Halloween party costume, Merryweather, the blue fairy godmother.  We were “Disney Bounding” which meant I only needed a suggestion of the fairy.  I had a blue dress to wear, as well as a blue scarf that could replace the cape Merryweather has.

Disneybounding is a subtler, more fashion-forward way for fans to show their love for Disney. Instead of wearing full-on costumes as cosplayers do, Disneybounders dress up in stylish, everyday outfits (known as Disneybounds) that are simply inspired by a particular character.

C817ECF3-1908-4BC4-A33C-AB2738C3045E

At the last minute, I decided a hat would be nice.  I found this headband style witch’s hat at Michael’s for 50% off, and our flight didn’t leave til afternoon, so I had plenty of time to transform it.

Because, who doesn’t whip up craft projects right before heading to the airport?

72623605-72CE-4DDD-AE67-C0F2343C06B5

The black hat was a gamble, I bought it hoping that the black netting could be cut off and I could go with the silver fabric underneath as a base.  And yup, it worked! I pulled off all the existing trims to replace with my own, more god motherly like ones.

I added sparkly tulle, a velvet ribbon and blue millinery rose to cover any black threads or remnants.

8EA87D3C-E6E6-4C76-B73B-F7B654FFF2EF

What possibly ruined the look was my black eye…  And the fact that my dress and hat were sorta vintagey.   People thought I was a Haunted Mansion ghost, not a fairy. By adding make up and glitter over the black eye, it probably looked fake.

Although, Merryweather is the bossiest of the three fairies and I am sure there were times when Flora and Fauna thought of smacking her.

I ended up tearing the rose offer toss in my bag (of course I would save that rose!) and putting the hat in the trash after being at Magic Kingdom for an hour or so.  Rides were more comfy without the hat and it was just too bulky to carry.

A sea shell gnome

It may have been October when we were at the beach, but my mind was already headed to Christmas because I am hosting A Snowbird’s Song, with a winter, holiday theme.

I saw this curved shell and of course, my mind went right to ELF HAT.

But then, I saw the beard shell, and knew this had to be a gnome.

Our trip to Florida was extra special with the four grand fairies along.  It has been a very rough time for us lately and we wanted to have a big celebration for Khya’s 18th birthday to let the kids know how much we care.

A2BD04DD-72FF-4A5A-AA8D-0F9799E912D2Although it ended up being a bigger “bash” than I thought it would be…

We’d had the balcony doors open to enjoy the ocean, and beautiful weather, and I didn’t realize that the housekeeper had just shut it right before I ran out onto the patio.  Oops.

Instead of going out the door, I bounced off of it. I spent the rest of the week pretending it didn’t hurt, so I could enjoy the wonderful trip with my sweet girls.

0AC830E2-134F-4AB1-8992-25CD18A7E839

Due to my carelessness, I didn’t swim much.  But I enjoyed lounging by the pool or ocean and watching the kids play from my one good eye.

F3B593BC-A8D0-4783-B3A0-F87625F20FED

And even with my sad, uneven vision, I had some gorgeous views!

E1417651-37CC-498C-972D-4B3F400BB700

When my son married Khya and Avahni’s mother, we took the girls to Florida as a welcome to the family trip.

Now that the marriage has ended, we wanted those two to know that they are our grand daughters forever, and we flew them off to Florida again to show them we are still family, no matter what.

AE1F3F5C-2C12-44AE-A76E-8ACD4C66E8DD

I also wanted Dewdrop to have some happy memories of her last weeks with us.

She has moved back to North Carolina now, and will not be living with us in Kansas every other year.  Her daddy wanted a new beginning and left to live in the mountains.

E706DCB9-3957-4932-BABD-25B4A25E8563

This trip was my attempt to hold on to those that I loved, but I think my heart may be more beat up than my face.

It is exciting to announce that I will be teaching at Karen Hillman’s Beauty in Blue event at Stacy Seely’s ranch in Texas!

41DEE1F4-9E31-40F3-A2C4-4D8E43D92E1C

Crafting these birdcage angels for the holiday themed Snowbird’s Song has been so much fun, that I thought I’d use the idea to make a springtime, fairy version in shades of blue for Karen’s gathering.

She is now “Blue Bonnet Belle”.

A few years ago, my Sissy, Randy, and I were lucky enough to be invited to an event  at Stacy’s with Karen.  Oh my, what a lovely spot!  And amazing food!  It is a big slumber party, with gourmet food and lots of special attention, plus shopping at the Canton Flea AND crafting?

Yee haw, what a shindig! (Hopefully that sounded Texan?)

I never get tired of Disney, but it is even better with grand fairies!

We had quite a trip for Khya’s 18th birthday and Dewdrop’s farewell party.

All of the kids were “the perfect age” for Disney.  Some old enough to be on their own for roller coasters, no one needed a stroller, all could stay out late.

9054D9F1-13B6-4C5B-948B-884129E06F93There was some rain, but not enough to bother us.  But enough to make the crowds lighter.

My husband even joined us for most of a day at Animal Kingdom.

And while he is not a fan of the parks, he seemed to have a good time.

We took a ride on the new skyline just to enjoy the views.

The other two days were a later start, not going to Magic Kingdom til the special event, Halloween party at 4 pm.

The lazy days by the pool were ideal.  I am used to being at the parks from open til close, and having long, lingering days to enjoy til it was time to visit Mickey, might be my new favorite way to go.

While I was spending a lot of time pretending that my skull wasn’t pounding in time to the African drums, I still was honestly having the best days ever.

Lines were short, the weather was comfy, and I had my four girls nearby.

Who knows what the future holds, with Dewdrop living in North Carolina full time, Sugarwings growing up, the big girls’ mom and my son splitting up?

But I do know that I love them all so much, and I will always be here for them when they miss their Grammie.

My husband has retired, our budget is changing, the kids are moving on, our family is divided. Some people have shown how little they care when times are tough.

But I have had a blessed time and know how lucky my life has been.  It wasn’t so much that I got to go to Disney with them as much as I got to share special memories and time.

No matter what changes are ahead, I will always have that.
