More Angel remakes

This tree topper needed some love.

SavingPNG

And she came to the right place to get it.  I added layers of lace and rhinestones along with a crown, branches, and vintage flocked wallpaper wings.

SavingPNG

Her friend was in a bit of a style predicament too.  First of all, why the orange ribbon? And the poof she sat on was wonky.
SavingPNG

I felt like she needed some freedom, so I took her poof away and gave her some wings.

SavingPNG

But wait a minute, that fat little puff ball had promise, it just needed a redo of its own.  I pulled some stuffing out, re-shaped it, and made it the home of another little girl.

A Santa redo

SavingPNG

As much as I enjoy turning neglected dolls into fairies and angels, I also get a kick out of Santa do overs. This guy got mink trim and a glittered tree.  Then an angora beard.

I emptied his bag of cheap, plastic toys and replaced them with mini Shiny Brites.

SavingPNG

Here is his before look.

I hope Santa Claus enjoys his makeover and remembers me when Christmas Eve rolls around.  I’d love to get a stocking filled with candy and treats!

Creating an old barn wood look with paint

Enlight1938

It’s all hands on deck here with the remodel/ repair job.  Sugarwings has been quite helpful with pulling up nails, hauling supplies, carrying out trash, etc.

Enlight1941

I have been painting wood to use on one wall where the drywall was especially bad.
Enlight1943
This design element accidentally developed.
Enlight1944

My son is a carpenter, he can do dry wall work, but doesn’t like it.  We were gifted a truckload of these rough hewn boards.  Rich and I were tired of the wasted space taken up by an extra door that was rarely used.  That doorway  wall also had drywall that needed replaced, while the other walls just needed patching.

Enlight1942

All of those elements pulled together to make a decision to panel over that door with our free wood.

Enlight1939

So, I painted away the lodge/cedary-orange look.  First the wood needed major sanding.  When I said ROUGH hewn, I meant it.  Splintery rough!

I used mostly watered down white paint, but I added some gray and brown here and there.  I’m pretty excited about how the finished project will look. And am looking forward to seeing my boy in action, working with the planks to create the siding.

A collapsing cottage?

Enlight1924
Aren’t these labradorite slices beautiful?  When the light hits them, they flash luminescent blues and golds.

Enlight1925
My plan is to use them randomly in these pebble 1’ x 1’ squares we are laying in our master bath. The stones are glued to the mesh backing.  I’ll peel up a few existing stones in the right sizes and replace them with my gems.

Enlight1927

A few years ago I found a stack of this old barkcloth at a flea market and am using one set of curtain panels in my studio.  I’d like to take the rest to make curtains for the bathroom.  At first I thought maybe I shouldn’t use the same fabric in two different rooms.  But when it’s material I love as much as I do this,  it would be silly not to, right?

Enlight1928

I’ll make French net sheers for the window with the rose fabric over it, opened in the middle, but not tied back.

IMG_7574

The shower will get a similar treatment, with a narrow panel of cabbage rose bark cloth on each side over this ivory curtain.

Enlight1926

There is already a rose theme going on with this tile around the tub.

Enlight1929

While we are in demolition mode, we are covering up an unused door that leads from the bathroom to the closet.  We decided the original entryway is plenty, we don’t need a second door.  Having two entries into our walk in closet, just causes less useful space available inside.  Right now, we have to leave clearance for a door to swing open.  Without that, I can have a small cabinet in the walk-in.

So, the wall that is losing a door, will be covered in white barn wood.  I’ll like the rustic wood, and pebble tile floor as a contrast to the mini chandelier, luxe window treatment, and roses.  I’m still debating on wall color for now.

Enlight1922

Why are we redoing our bathroom, which pretty nice to start with? Well for at least ten years, our house has been settling.

Enlight1921

Although in the last couple, it started to feel more unsettled than just normal settling.  Walls were cracking, tiles breaking, and we were developing a slope.

Enlight1923

When we realized the crawlspace needed checked out, we also realized that the contractor who added this addition did not leave access to get to it.

Why?

The tile was cracking anyway, so the guys chipped it away to make a hole in the floor to get under the house.  When they squeezed through, another discovery showed there was also no ventilation which caused dry rot and structural damage.

After consulting a friend who owns a foundation company, and various other skilled tradesmen, Adam and Rich decided they could fix it, if they hired a crew of skilled workers.
Enlight1918
The adventure begins.

Thanks to everyone who came to see me this weekend

antiques/junking, Good JuJu, holiday decor

SavingPNG
We had an action packed weekend at Good Juju.
SavingPNG
Although we were right on the tail end of Halloween, you’d never know that only the night before, trick-or-treaters are ghouls were roaming the streets.
SavingPNG
On November 1st in the aisles of our store, it was full on Christmas time.
SavingPNG
My booth was probably 60% handmade holiday decor, 35% vintage Christmas, and a mere 5% other stuff.

SavingPNG

Now, don’t quote me on this numerical division, it’s just a guess.  What I’m saying is, I doubled down hard on the holidays myself.

SavingPNG

I love every moment of Christmas decorating and crafting, so am thrilled to have five days of holiday sales at the venue this season.

SavingPNG

Not only our First Friday weekends in November and December but a bonus shopping day on Saturday the 23rd.

SavingPNG

And you know me, I went all out, over producing since I was doing what I love.

SavingPNG

So I will need that extra day to get rid of, I mean market, my inventory.

SavingPNG

No worries about you coming to see us on the last date of our holiday sale and not finding anything.  We are overstuffed, especially me.   I still have a table filled with goods in my studio to bring in, and most likely will have so much extra that I’ll be packing it up for next year too.

SavingPNG
That’s the nice thing about vintage goods, or arty goods made with vintage style and ingredients.  There is no expiration date.   A fifty year old item will just be even better fifty years from now, right?

SavingPNG

An elf on steroids

antiques/junking, Good JuJu, holiday decor

SavingPNG
It’s my favorite time of the year for creating! I’ve been whipping out tree after tree, angels, ornies, and more.  Santa’s little helpers have nothing on me, I could out tinker them any day.
SavingPNG

This season, I might’ve gone overboard…
SavingPNG

But I kept thinking, okay that’s enough, but wait, just one more?

SavingPNG

So of course, I’d make ten more.
SavingPNG

Who am I kidding- I’d make twenty more!

SavingPNG

How could I possibly let any dove go unglittered and crownless?

SavingPNG

Or leave a stack of tulle in a pile when I knew it deserved to be a tree?

SavingPNG

No old, broken dolls were going to the Island of Misfit Toys on my watch, they needed a do-over.

And wings!

SavingPNG

Just because vintage satin balls were missing a way to be hung, didn’t mean they couldn’t be glued onto a wreath.  Someone had to do it and that someone was me.

SavingPNG

No candleholders were going to be left empty and bereft of use.  They needed to be topped with sparkling trees and tiny deer.

SavingPNG

Same with the boxfuls of lanterns I’d gathered at garage sales all summer.  I was not going to let a single lantern go unlit.  They were stuffed with twinkle lights, trees, deer, and any other glittery item I could shove inside.

SavingPNG

See what I mean? I couldn’t stop.  Luckily, our foundation is collapsing and we have a major reconstruction project to start today.  That will finally stop my uncontrolled holiday crafting obsession.

SavingPNG

More about that later. Ugh.

SavingPNG

Come and see us at Good Juju for First Friday weekend today and tomorrow to see some of my creations.  We also have a single bonus day to be open on the Saturday previous to Thanksgiving before our next First Friday weekend on 6-7.

A Halloween ghost toast

Uncategorized

SavingPNG
Happy Halloween!
Sugarwings and I were not going to be together in the 31st, so we celebrated the holiday early with a mocktail toast.

SavingPNG
The recipe is kinda like one of Sissy’s friends was serving last week, but with a few embellishments.  Sugarwings and I like our edible glitter that swirls around in the liquid.

First, we generously smeared caramel sauce on the interior of the ruby flash stemware (a perfect glass for this beverage, its elegant color was a striking contrast to the ghoulish green soda).

Then added crushed ice and this BeetleJuice spiced apple soda.  It got a pinch of glitter, was topped with whipped cream, then Halloween sprinkles – oh and a couple eyeballs.

SavingPNG

It made for a tasty, ghost toast to honor the  spooky day.

Now that the kiddo is back at Mom’s, I have de-Halloweened my house already (it’s been ghoulish since August, I was done).  Normally, I’d be ready to deck the halls November 1st but I’ve had to cool my heels on that project. We are ripping up a bathroom floor to get to the bottom of a foundation issue.

Bad news, major expense and mess plus delayed hall decking.

Good news, my boy is here to work on it! And I get a renovated bathroom!

What a great, but awful week

family

SavingPNGHow can the world’s worst vacation turn into a special and fun time? I spent it with My People.  When I have them around me, all is good.

Even when it’s bad.

SavingPNGThe plan was to take our Sister Trip to Florida, and bring the “kids”.  We found an ideally located home on Bobbie’s favorite beach, right next to the condos we adore staying at, but large and luxurious enough to hold a dozen of us. It even had three bathrooms! And walked out directly onto the sand with a view from the balcony that matched our beloved spot from previous Sister Trips.

SavingPNG

But then you might’ve heard- there was a hurricane that blew from the gulf all the way up to my son’s home in North Carolina.  I was an emotional wreck, and couldn’t even think about what to do about the Siesta Key trip.  (My family members in the Asheville area are all doing okay, thank goodness)

There is an iffy line you need to figure out if you’ve got an upcoming vacation when a disaster strikes.  It is heart wrenching to imagine what they are facing.

Of course you want to be respectful and considerate of what people living there are going through.  Since my kids were in the center of the behemoth of a storm themselves, I could understand how ravaged lives are at a time like that.  But you also have to consider when, how and what to cancel, right?

SavingPNG

Plus, it’s a tourist area, and supporting the locals with travel dollars is vital, if possible.  We soon found out it wasn’t, so tried planning elsewhere, with our numbers dwindling from an original dozen to maybe 8 or so, and without a firm plan on where to go. Then heard another possible hurricane was coming.

Not to sound uncaring about the people in danger of the storm, but monkey wrenches were being flung hither and yon to hinder our trip.

Our on again, off again itinerary was starting to angst me up, and I dropped out too.  Then others cancelled and I figured I’d drive to Indy and spend my week there.  We planned mini trip to a French Lick resort and some other activities and I was looking forward to it.

SavingPNG

But oops- another monkey wrench, this time in the form of pneumonia for Sissy!  But she was being treated, the party was still on, we were going to make it a vacation no matter what. Till she had some scary complications that shook me to my core. She is doing well now! But at the time, I was freaking out, it was the exact same time last year that similar problems were developing with Bobbie.  The dejavu burbled up in me like a volcano with burning hot fear.

I had to tell myself this was different, there is no underlying cancer like there was with Bobbie Sue, Sissy would do well- and she did do well.  But tell that to my nervous system and stress responses.

SavingPNG

Sissy was recovering so nicely we wanted to go out for a fancy, staycation dinner to celebrate.  And the evening was so meant to be, we kept seeing signs throughout the meal.  My balsamic vinegar formed a heart in the olive oil, which might seem silly to take note of, but was meaningful to us.

SavingPNG
Then a guy walked by wearing a tee shirt from Bobbie’s favorite Florida restaurant!  I went and talked to him, got a photo of his shirt then retuned to my seat to discover a heart in the print hanging by our table.

SavingPNG
As I sat down, I must’ve bumped my watch, because a memo popped up reminding me that the calendar noted we should be in Siesta Key.

SavingPNG
Of course, I was in tears, plus we were laughing over all the coincidences.  Now, I do NOT need signs to miss or be reminded of my sister.  But spotting these little hearts and tidbits feel like messages that she will always be with me.

That day, a tree had been marked with a memorial sign for Bobbie, so after an emotional meal, we went to the park to visit it. It was a windy night, and the sign was blowing around on its branch like it was waving at us.

SavingPNG

My week in Pendleton was filled with extreme emotions, but also lots of togetherness.  We did not get to walk together on the shore, but my nieces and I spent lots of time on the trails of local parks.  We no longer had Bobbie with us, but she was part of our days.
SavingPNG
We didn’t have a view of the ocean, but we had the sun shining through the turning leaves.

SavingPNG

And we had each other to laugh, cry, play, and worry with.  Is it wrong that I feel like I had one of my favorite vacations?

It’s one I will treasure.

Everything was golden

dogs

SavingPNG

With Rich working out of town so much, we have missed our dog park walks.  Last week, we had an opportunity to hit the trails and get some steps in with the doggies.

SavingPNG

Our good intentions of getting exercise soon turned into relaxing by the water fall and soaking up the golden sunshine of a perfect autumn morning.

SavingPNG

My lack of motivation didn’t stop the dogs.  At the sight of the water, zoomies hit and they took off running with pure joy.

SavingPNG
Well, most of them, that is.  Dorothy Rosebud hung with me on the cliff.

SavingPNG

(uhm, I know that if you are a hiker in a genuine mountain zone, you wouldn’t consider this a “cliff”.  But hey, I’m a Kansan, let me have my happiness where I can find it!  This is my Kansas version of a waterfall beneath a cliff)
SavingPNG
Oh, and whatever you do, please don’t tell the girls and spoil it for them.

SavingPNG

This quiet, little space at the dog park, down by the Kaw River is their idea of being free in the wilderness.  And our corner of paradise.

Time with friends

SEVENTY FOUR magic wand/ plant stakes done and ready to market for the holidays!

Beth came over for a craft day, she was wanting to learn how to make Swifty bracelets, so I gave her some tips.  I had an order to fill of my own bracelets for a friend, so worked on those a while before starting on the plant stakes.  I stayed on task late into the day.  Actually into the evening.  I didn’t leave my post til after 9pm and this magical pile was all done.

SavingPNG

But I’m afraid that’s all I could manage for the day.  The final part, price tagging, was done at my mosaic group.  My pal, Shan, had just finished this beauty, and there I sat like a lump, making price tags.  This group is full of talented people and I love the look of the mosaics, but I typically find myself doing busywork like tags, or covering dozens of mushroom caps in velvet.

Someday, I’ll make another shiny glass piece.

SavingPNG

It was a week full of friends, how lucky!  I had craft day with Beth, mosaic day with the group, plus had a gathering at the cottage to write postcards to send to swing states reminding voters to skeedaddle to the poles on November 5th.

My political opinions are strong, but my main one is, get out there and vote, no matter what your opinions are!
