A Fairy Princess and a Weird Old Lady

Carol_and_beth_craft_030 I had a wonderful day, a Sugarwings day.  That is the best kind. She cuddled up on my lap and watched a whole movie with me, while we played with Twinkle’s soft ears.

Then, this evening, I had time to do this watercolor sketch after making a pot of homemade turkey noodle soup.

Not a bad day at all, a cuddly baby, a dog with soft ears, homemade soup, and time to paint!Carol_and_beth_craft_031

This little painting is a cartoon of my friend Rachael’s little Princess.  I am going to send it to her as her prize for my December Giveaway.

I like to figure out what the prize for my monthly giveaway will be AFTER I draw the name, that way I can do something custom.

This isn’t a perfect likeness, only a quick caricature done while I watched an episode of What Not To Wear.  Do you see Stacey London’s influence here? The little fairy is wearing an empire waisted dress. Stacey is always pushing those.

I’m so glad that Rachael won last month, I have been wanting to paint her beautiful daughter for a long time, and this was a great excuse to finally do it.

Now for another thing that makes me happy -7 weird things! I was quite addicted to that rage when it went through blog world before, and read them all, from one list to another to another. I’d get lost in all the stories and insights into my fellow bloggers.  Now, the game seems to be going around again and I’ve been tagged another time myself, this time by Michelle.   Here is the last one I did, at the end of this (typically) long and rambling post: http://karlascottage.typepad.com/karlascottage/2007/09/beth-birdies-be.html

  1. I LOVE the weird lists.  Whether I know the blogger or not, I can’t stop reading all of them. I’ve done this a few times myself, but feel like I have enough weirdness to fill a few lists
  2. On my trip home from apartment furnishing out East, I brought home a suitcase full of bubble wrap and cardboard that our new purchases came wrapped in.  How could I waste all that wonderful, precious bubble wrap???
  3. I had 2 suitcases on that trip, and weirdly enough, I filled the gym type bag without wheels full of clothes and heavy stuff, while the nice wheeled piece of luggage was filled with bubble wrap. I don’t know what I was thinking.
  4. My wallpaper addiction is becoming serious. I am forcing myself to cut it up, use it, sell it, enjoy it, not just hoard the stuff.Carol_and_beth_craft_033

These 3 drawers are full of rolls, and that is just the tip of it all.Carol_and_beth_craft_034

Here are a few sample books, I love working with these, so easy, no ironing like the rolls!Carol_and_beth_craft_035

I save every little scrap, you never know when that little strip of old paper will be the PERFECT touch to finish an artwork!

There is more, it is taking over my studio. I am thinking of papering one wall in it, but small bits, like a crazy quilt.  So I can stare at it and enjoy it all.  See, weird. It is an obsession.Carol_and_beth_craft_037

5. I keep one of Sugarwings sockies on my bedside table  when she isn’t here, because it is so tiny and cute and reminds me of her.  I snuck a pair of her little pink sockies into my husband’s bag so he would find them when he unpacks at his apartment.

We are both smitten with her.

6. I wear my paint clothes all the time.  I am a slob. My family is used to it and I used to get strange looks from people sometimes, but don’t so much anymore. My theory is that people don’t notice middle aged women much.  We are invisible

7. I can’t get enough popcorn. Sometimes I go to movies I don’t even care about just to eat the popcorn.  I love to go to late movies all alone and get a bucket of crunchy, salty goodness and relax.  Its not the same at home, no matter what brand of microwave corn I buy, the stuff at the theater is the best.

I met Orville Redenbacher at the Indiana State Fair when I was 12 or so, and it was before he was famous, he was giving out samples of his new popcorn (pre-microwave days) and I always remembered that funny man, and recognized him when I saw the commercials later.  I just love Orville and am glad they brought him back from the dead to do his commercials again, even though it is slightly freaky.

Thanks Michelle, that was fun!

I finally picked up a copy of the new Somerset Life.  What a gorgeous issue! But all of their magazines are wonderful, I love them all.Carol_and_beth_craft_044

This one has an article about kits and they have featured one of my kits for sale on Etsy.Carol_and_beth_craft_045

Its an honor to be a part of such an interesting and well done publication!

I hope to spend some time tomorrow making some more collage kits to list on Etsy. I have a few up right now, but I have some ideas for more.

But I also need to work on those swap recipe book covers, my year end quarterly taxes, and did I mention that my Christmas tree is still up, as well as my whole house is still decorated for the holidays???? I might just need to add some pink and red hearts to the trees and forget about it till after February!

So much to do.  I think I’ll go to a late night movie! I need to RUN so I don’t miss the last show, I hear that bucket of popcorn calling my name!

  1. That water color is beautiful! I love the glitter! You’ll ahve to share where you get all of your wall paper from. I can’t seem to find many interesting ones around here.

  2. I saw the headline for your blog and thought I hope this article is not about me! hee! hee! I have been helping my friends promote their modern day fairy tale, Princess Bubble and I feel like the weird old lady very time I try to get up from the floor at a reading.
Your art is a beautiful treat instead!

  3. I’m really lovin’ the look of this magazine but I don’t think I can get it here in Canada?… Oh well, good thing I live on the NY border… 🙂

  4. I am a movie-popcorn girl myself! I
CAN NOT go to the movies w/o popcorn! Have you tried ‘Orville Redenbaucher’s Pour Over Movie Theater Butter’? Not theater popcorn, but pretty darn close! I like to layer the ‘butter’ when I do mine. (and I just ignore that little voice in my head that tells me it isn’t really butter and it really isn’t good for me!) I have a big round plastic bowl I use and I pour about a third of the popcorn in, butter, shake, repeat. Yumm. I hate to say it, but I usually eat the whole bag myself – I don’t like to share my popcorn!

  5. Love the painting! And I think doing a wallpaper collage on one of your studio walls would be great! Also, have you ever just gone to the theater and gotten a bag of popcorn to take home, without staying to see the movie? My kids get embarassed and think I’m crazy when I do it!

  6. What a wonderful idea to leave a pair of socks for grandpa. I have a small suitcase with some of my daughter’s baby clothes. I love looking at how small the socks are and I, also, kept a
well worn pair of sandals with her little toe imprints.

  7. Karla, I have checked around to try to buy the magazine Somerset Life, but the stores do not have them. Is there a address or phone number you can send my way so i can contact them???
    Thanks, Janice

  8. You famous person!!! I think you’ll need sunglasses at the theater so the papparazzi won’t follow you around! Now you have me craving popcorn. Karla- I am really impressed with your fairy painting! I don’t think everyone knows how hard it is to do what you do. Now that I’ve been drawing more, I have become even more impressed with your work! I love the eyes!!! I just read Beth’s blog about her wallpaper stash too… you two better get busy!!

  9. Karla…love the painting,I’m sure Rachel will adore it!
I was so taken by the baby sock you leave on your bedside table…you are such a great grandma!
    I’m having my 100th post giveaway…
    Come on over,
    Priscilla

  10. Hi Karla,
That was so fun ~ I love that you keep one of Sugarwings’ sockies on your table. That is just about the sweetest thing ever. I agree on that invisible thing…what the heck?! It is kinda nice sometimes though…
    Hugs,
    Dena

  11. Beautiful painting! Oh and loved the “weirdness” post hahaha! I just ate a huge bowl of Orville’s popcorn! Great minds think alike. Hugz Grace

  12. Love the crazy quilt wallpaper idea! It’s giving me an idea for a collage piece to hang up, just need to hit more estate sales for the wallpaper. Beautiful painting too!

  13. I love the artwork and your drawers full of wallpaper. I love paper, but I don’t have nearly the collection I see there. Somerset Life looks gorgeous, I’ll have to look for that one. Such a gorgeous blog, and this wallpaper background on your blog totally suits you. Blessings, Karen

  14. OMG your painting is gorgeous! Lucky recipient! I too keep tiny socks and shoes that belong to my nieces/kids. I couldn’t part with my baby’s clothing so I made a wuilt out of them for each child..LOL! Thanks for sharing your habits/facts!
    xoxoSandy

  15. Okay, now that I have seen the fairy portrait for a prize I REALLY want to win! It is so lovely! What a lucky winner! I love your list! What fun weird things! Where do you find all that wall paper? I only ever see ugly stuff! Great post!

  16. Hi Karla,
Have been meaning to stop in and tell you how much I loved your bathroom featured in Romantic Home (I think that was the magazine). It’s beautiful, and has inspired me to re-purpose an old cupboard I have for the bathroom.

  17. Weird? Not so much. I understand that hoarding mentality…and the guilt associated with it..if I use it, it will not be there to use again. I think we all go through that, but in the end, you just have to know that there will be more. The more you use, the more you can look for. I also love movies and popcorn, and also feel as though no one really notices me. Sometimes it is good to be middleaged. Susan

  18. Your blog is like my favorite magazine, I can’t seem to put it down. Congrats on being featured in Somerset Life, way to go!
Ok girl, you MUST share some of the wealth of all that vintage wallpaper. I am slowly starting an obsession myself. I got awesome deals on Ebay for 2 HUGE rolls. I was so happy and they are so pretty, couldn’t pass them up. I hope to have a stash like yours some day. Woohoo for wallpaper!

  19. Hi Karla! I love popcorn too – lots of butter and salt. YUM. Great painting too! You are very clever. I also admire your love for Sugarwings!! It makes me smile every time you talk about her as I can tell she means everything to you 🙂
