A flock of Fairies

Fairy party with joan 067

We flew my husband's mother from Wyoming to North Carolina for the wedding last week, and then brought her home with us for a few days after.  So, in honor of Grandma Joan's visit to Kansas, I threw her a fairy tea party with her great grand daughters.

Sugarwings was still in the party mood, after all the birthday celebrations this week.  She and little Pixie Pie have had a wonderful time together with so many family gatherings going on all week while Grandma Joan was here.

Even the big girls got into dressing up as fairies, although we couldn't convince their boyfriends to wear wings….

Our little ones were patient while we took some pictures before the party started. But not for too long.  At 2 and 3, waiting times are limited when there is something exciting scheduled to happen.

We served blueberry and cranberry herb teas, but the tiniest fairies were more interested in the spoonfuls of sugar they could add to their cups.

For Sugarwing's birthday, I let her help me decorate the dining room with Dollar Store garlands.  Yes, gaudy and over the top, but she is in love with them, so we left them up for this party too.

We just added some fairies here and there. I happened to have a few around to use….

We served:

cherry tomatoes from the garden on toothpicks with grilled chicken breast

cherries and grapes with mandarin oranges

 crust-less cucumber sandwiches

red cabbage with cream cheese rolled up in green tortilla shells

peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the littlest ones.

These are my fairy shoes, saved for special occasions like this.

Luckily you can't really tell here, but my makeup job was a bit like Baby Jane.  Remember that scary Betty Davis movie?  I got carried away with the eyeshadow, not a pretty sight after 50…

I'm on my way now to Indiana for my sister's 60th birthday party.  I'd better pack my fairy wings and hit the road.  The parties never end around here, huh?

  1. Okay, so loving the reference to Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, one of my favorite movies by the Great Bette Davis. I adore reading about the adventures of Sugarwings and her family. Sea Witch

  4. Karla, I just loved it all, the decorations, the costumes, your beautiful fairy slippers (how awesome are they?). But my favorite part? Grandma Joan in her fairy finery. She looks absolutely beautiful! What a most wonderful time with all the generations together. Makes me miss my mom so much. She would have loved this! Thanks for sharing. Mona

  5. Do you know, I was sitting her thinking ‘I like Karla’s make up there’! It photographed well :O)
Nothing wrong with gaudy and over the top when it comes to doing things for teeny tinies.
I just love your shoes! I have the *tiniest* bit of a shoe obsession, and fairy shoes sounds like a good thing to have. I think I need some! (Ok, the husband would point out I have a few pairs that could be suitable, but I think I need new ones!)
Have a lovely week, thanks for showing the photos, they were a delight to see.

  6. What fun! Totally adorable and uninhibited!
The girls ALL looked adorable, young and mature! (Notice I didn’t say old!) Did you give Sugarwings her book? If you said so I guess I missed it. Want to know her reaction. Have a good trip to Indiana!

  7. I have enjoyed the fairy party! And so did everybody!
Mmm you might have to get used to your new hair color, which make up to wear, but if you hadn’t told us nobody would have noticed.
Have a great trip to Indiana! (Isn’t that an Osmond song? Indiana here we come?)

  8. Darling party, Karla! And what a sweet daughter-in-law you are to throw it for your mom-in-law!!
Wow! You are on-the-go!! Have fun at your sister’s!!

  9. How sweet was this? I love the pic of your mom-n-law with the crown on her head, one of my grandma’s would have looked at me like I was nuts but played along, the other would have cussed like a sailor the whole time…not such a sweet sight! The other pic of Sugarwings digging in the sugar bowl is hysterical..she was so bent on getting every little bit…so cute. Have a safe trip or trips I should say!
