A furry transformation

Little Agnes Rosebud got her first hair cut this week.  All Yorkies are born black and as they grow, their puppy hair gets fuzzy and matted over the new silky, adult hair underneath.  And I mean matted.  Her hair was so bad, that when I tried to just snip off a bit, I realized it was all one big, connected mass. Ugh. So, I slid my tiny scissors beneath the knots and started to snip.

It all came off in one hunk.  Like a pelt.  Or like a little old lady's wiglet. You know the ones that you see in every closet at an estate sale?

Yea, gross. I'd rather think of it as her cocoon. She emerged from it as a beautiful butterfly.  It certainly is a transformation.    Her brother, Button   and sister, Lili Bella, got theirs cut this week too.  Teresea has cute before and after pictures of Lilli, I didn't since my hair cutting was unplanned.   I just snipped a bit away and realized I was trapped and couldn't stop.

I don't think this poor dog has two hairs the same length on her entire body.  Maybe I should stick to using my scissors on old paper….  but she still manages to be pretty durn cute.

We spent some time doing yard work over the 3 day weekend, and I planted some late summer to fall blooming hydrangeas.  For about a decade, I couldn't get a hydrangea to grow for anything.  I could have just as easily been planting dollars in the ground instead, it had the same result.

But I seemed to have found the secret to keeping them alive and now can't get enough of them.

And of course, I can never get enough of old jewelry.  Beth and I spent last Friday at one of my favorite places in the world, Sparks Flea Market.  Its always good for a big bag of jewels!

I've yet to go through my pile of goodies to sort and see what I bought.  Hopefully, later today, I'll get a chance.  I'm making  cuff bracelets today, and will need to at least pull some blingers out of the pile for those, even if I don't get to sort them completely.

When I buy piles of jewelry, I sort it into these categories:

  • Too Nice- add to Boutique
  • needs minor repair
  • broken, missing stones,  not worth repair but great for crafting (some to keep, some to sale)
  • single earrings
  • suitable for making jewelry

Then there are sub-categories:

  • clear rhinestones
  • colored rhinestones
  • flowers
  • shapes/figures
  • cameos
  • buckles
  • lockets
  • pearls
See why it takes a while?  Plus, its so fun, I feel like the King in his counting house while I play with it all.  So, I don't like to be rushed.

One of the new brooches from the flea has already found a home on this wall hanging that I made for Romantic Gothic Ghosts.  I thought this would be nice on a door, in place of a wreath. Its a quickie, and simple to make.

Its a BONUS tutorial!  I've added it to the end of the class. I've had so much fun with the class, that its hard to stop, I had to make another piece for it! We've included lots of extras in the class, videos, giveaways, lots of images, and decor tips.

The tutorial blog will be up for  as long as I have a Typepad account, and many of the ideas can be used for more than just Halloween.  But, if you want to enter the giveaways, you need to play along in "real time", because they will end this Sept.

If you'd like to see what some of our artists have made with their take on the class, you can look here.

And if you'd like to win one of the projects I've made, please leave a comment.  Sandy at Quill Cottage is giving away one of hers too!

  1. That is quite the transformation! She looks like a big girl now. I remember the first time we groomed my Mini Schnauzer to look like a Schnauzer – I was so upset at first but of course she was adorable.

  2. Oh my gosh!! that first picture is just too cute!!
I am hoping to get a few moments of time to start on the romantic gothic ghosts this weekend… I am itching to make one of these gorgeous projects. I will share some pics on my blog when I get something done.. ;))
    have a great weekend!!

  3. I just can’t help thinking that Rosie looks like a little Marie Antoinette dog with a hydrangea wig. That’s quite a fancy little collar she has- if I put something like that on Button there’d be rhinestones all over the house. He’s chewed on his rabies tag so much you can’t read it anymore.

  4. So what is the secret with the hydrangeas? Seriously, if there is anything helpful, I am all ears.
Aggie Rose looked like a gremlin in the first photo…never, never feed her after midnight…so sweet! Your Friend, Bobbi

  5. Hi, Karla — I feel as though I’ve been away so long, I’ll never catch up with blog world. But I’ll have to skip over and look at the things from the class. Came at the wrong time for me, but sounded wonderful.
And what IS the secret with hydrangeas? Every year I plant the one I buy at Easter and every year it dies a painful death!

  6. Karla, li’l Agnes Rosebud is so Sweetly Adorable! Your photos of her are so precious and gorgeous! Now I so wish I knew the secret to growing hydrangeas, I’ve no green thumb but I do try. And, I Love hydrangeas! Thinking I must join your Romantic Gothic Ghosts class! :o}

  7. Look at those ears on Agnes Rosebud!!! One of my yorkies has ears like that and I say to him, “those aren’t ears, they’re batwings!”
I love Hydrangeas – they are so beautiful.

and all the bling,bling- what a big bunch to dig inside, and to use for your wonderfull art pieces, like the one shown here—it is fantastic with the brown/golden tones.

  9. She’s cute w/ or w/out the flowing hair.
Guess what? I got a new puppy last week…a shiht, of course. He’s fitting in so well w/ the family but loves me best of all & is always at my feet. :)Been spending lots of time w/ him & haven’t even had time to do any of the projects from your tut. But I’m planning on doing some this weekend.
BTW Sugarwings is GORGEOUS in her Princess costume…your photos of her are fabulous!

  10. I’m laughing about the old lady wig! I hate when you open a box at an estate sale and that’s what you see. It always freaks me out!! ;o) I think Agnes Rosebud look simply divine! She’s charming with her new “do.” Cheers- Kathy

  12. Agnes Rosebud – what a doll! She looks all fresh and brand new! You did a great job. As for that little wiglet that you mentioned – why do they always have them at estate sales? Is it what we have to look forward to as we ‘mature’? Hope not, I’m keeping hold of mine as long as I can!
What a wonderful bunch of bling you got as well – very envious. Looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful creations – including canine haircuts!

  13. You are surrounded by sweetness Karla, from your fairy grandbaby to these cute little creatures. No wonder you’re smiling all the time!
I have a problem with clematis vines. The summer blooming kind. The spring ones take over, but the big flowering vines, boy those are hard. I hope I’ll learn the secret to them, one day.
While my friend Beth was visiting, we drove through a couple of fancy neighborhoods. At one home, we saw white hydrangeas that would have made you swoon. They wee as big as, oh gee I don’t know, imagine the biggest of the helium filled, traditionally shaped birthday balloons, I guess, then, make them a little bigger and rounder. They were stunning. I didn’t take a photo, as filled the beds under all the front windows of the house, but I don’t think I will ever forget them.

  14. She is so sweet; I love the bracelt/necklace on her! She can wear the glam well!
oooh, love the extra, can’t wait! Hope to get caught up this weekend, If I get my way ;-D

  15. My what a haircut can do…. She looks too cute!!
Your treasures from the flea are beautiful, Karla! Sparks sounds wonderful! Oh to be a little closer!
What a pretty project too!!! Lovely!

  16. You got me! What is the secret with the hydrangeas, especially here in Kansas? I got a few to bloom this summer, but not nearly what I would like.
Agnes Rosebud is soooooo cute. The haircut is darling, even though is is homespun! I enjoyed watching all your puppies grow, it must be so hard to part with them. Thanks for sharing, love all the loot you got from Sparks, I haven’t made it up there for a very long time, maybe next Spring….. Linda

  17. Agnes Rosebud is too cute!! I remember when our little Chloe got her Yorkie puppy fur cut off…they look like a different dog when they lose that puppy fur.
Love all the jewelry pieces that you got from the Sparks Flea Market. I used to find bunches of old jewelry pieces sold by the bags full at our local flea market, but for the last few years…I haven’t been able to find any except single pieces.
    Have a great weekend.
    ~Cindy~

  18. Karla,
I love your Gothic wall hanging. I am sad every time i see it but I will get in on your next class. We leave tomorrow and I am so crazy busy!
I wonder what your hydrangea secret is. Does it have to do with acid or alkaline? We get a hydrangea made for this climate as they are just about my favorites. Are they as pretty? No.
Agnes Rosebud is adorable! I love those little dogs. That will be our next pup, I swear, but I can’t start the thought of losing either of our two. I do love having two dogs. It happened my accident about twenty years ago and I have never gone back!!! I did see Teresa’s and Beth’s dog. They are all A-DOR-A-BLE!
    Hugs,
    Suz

  19. I love dogs……………love the rhinestone collar too!
I am painting furniture this weekend ( using the Karla instructions) and just got a request from my Sugarwings baby for a picture of Nemo and Dori. My daughter says they are fish…..from the movie Finding Nemo. So much art…so little time.

  20. Love your babies’ with their new “looks” !! Thank you so much for sharing your jewelry sorting categories… I might have to try that; although I’ll probably cut the list of categories in half! I do a similar sort for laces; so much work, yet so much fun!

  21. Hi Karla, I just love your blog, it just takes me out of my world into this beautiful world of pearls and diamonds and roses and feathers and pretty things, lace and ribbon and old photos. I could sit here for ages just reading and looking at photos of Sugar Wings. I have 2 little granddaughters myself, one almost 3 and one 5 months and I adore them. The 3 year old is having a fairy themed birthday party on the 26th September for her 3rd birthday. I have helped her Mum buy lots of gorgeous fairy items on ebay. I am new to the blog world, and I just adore yours. I loved the video of your studio, it is full of just gorgeous things, and you are so talented! Your little dogs are so cute too. I have 2 toy poodles, one is white and the other apricot, and they follow me around all day too. Please keep up your gorgeous work and your lovely photos and blogs….I just love them! From Sue at country-blossoms.blogspot.com (I live in South Australia by the way) so your blogs go all over the world! Hugs from Sue xx

  22. Oh, Agnes looks adorable! I love her coloring anyway. I bought a bag of old jewels the other day, too! I may have paid too much — maybe not, though! I won’t know until I go through it! I’m like you — I savor that time and so far I haven’t had the chance!

  23. After seeing each of your finished projects from Gothic Ghosts, I swear I’m going to spend my time finishing just one! Then I get distracted! Halloween is almost here so I must get busy! So many wonderful things to create!
