A garden tour

Summer_garden_and_gifts_043 I finally found the perfect stereo cabinet to match my new dining room table!

Well, almost perfect.  The black speakers stick out like a sore thumb when I tucked them underneath the cabinet.Summer_garden_and_gifts_041

So, Twinks helped me (and I have to say, she really isn’t as much help as she thinks she is) cover them in silk brocade wallpaper over the box and cut up lace curtains over the woofer/tweeter parts.

I know they aren’t exactly gorgeous, but they will kind of blend into the background now and not stand out like the black did.Summer_garden_and_gifts_013

Today started out humid and in the 90s, but a light rain brought the temperature down and made weeds easy to slide up out of the ground, so I spent some time in the veggie garden this afternoon.Summer_garden_and_gifts_012

LUSHNESS was overflowing everywhere!

Our garden is planted inside the foundation of the 100 year old  barn we had to tear down.  Years of manure and composted hay on the site make for some fantastic soil.Summer_garden_and_gifts_010

I’ve added compost to it too and use plenty of Miracle Gro.  Sometimes, I think it might be too lush!  I’ve had to trim back the spaghetti squash just so we can get in and out of the gate.Summer_garden_and_gifts_022

There is green everywhere in my yard.  This year, all the plants are enjoying the milder temperatures and extra rain.Summer_garden_and_gifts_023

My large perennial beds are thriving, with no attention at all.  Summer_garden_and_gifts_024

These are just "ditch" lilies, but I enjoy their dependability and abundance.  And especially the fact that they choke out all weeds and I haven’t touched this bed since I planted it 16 years or more ago!Summer_garden_and_gifts_026

The overgrown green plant in the right hand corner is another that chokes everything else out. I have to shoot it with Round UP to kill it off regularly, or it would be the only thing growing on my land!Summer_garden_and_gifts_028

Too bad I don’t have more plants in bloom right now.  The problem is that I didn’t fill in around the perennials with enough annuals this year.  I knew I’d be going to DC and taking some other trips, and didn’t want to make the yard work too complicated for my son while I was away.

Right now, I have hoses and sprinklers running to key areas (mostly veggies and new plantings) and all he has to do is turn the faucet and it all self waters.

Of course, a sprinkler system would be nice instead….. but not in my price range.  Summer_garden_and_gifts_035

I’ve done my best to plant traditional Kansas plants that take care of themselves and adapt to the weather conditions.

If they start to brown up in August  when the ground gets dry, I know that is just normal and let them go, they’ll rebound and come back in September when things cool off.

That just makes me appreciate the yard even more when it is going through its lush phases like now.

  1. Your yard is beautiful!
After 25 years of sprinklers and hoses, I’m finally getting some sprinklers installed with a timer. It’s HEAVEN. We are planting new landscaping and I’m using as many drought tolerant plants as possible. It sure is easier to go with the environment than against it.
Now, I need to find plants (for the area that is not fenced) that the rabbits won’t eat. With the price of plants, these days, I can’t afford to feed them.

  2. thanks for the tour Karla:) your garden looks lovely…and to answer your question to me…i am ON for Karlapalooza!!! i can’t wait!!!

  3. We had a sprinkler system in South Florida, and we really miss it. I don’t know why, but we have never installed one here. We’ve talked about it, but then it just seems to drop off our radar.
Your garden looks so green and lush. I bet good things are coming out of it.

  4. Your yard is beautiful! And Twinkle looks perfectly poised in the picture. She must have been waiting for you to push the “button”! Love how you turned the stereo speakers into works of art! Very clever!!

  5. Great idea for the speakers. They blend in very nicely. Love all the garden photos. Twinkle looks quite happy! You have inspired me to try making my own pickles!

  6. I do enjoy your blog….everything is always interesting and the photos alone are wonderful…kinda like before we could read and we just admired the pictures in the book. If you have a minute, please pop over to my blog and pick up your award…..I know, you don’t have any idea who I am, but I do enjoy your blog and wanted to thank you for gentle get-away.

  7. Love your yard and garden! And what a great idea for those speakers! The cabinet is too pretty to have unaltered speakers below it!
    Have a great day!

  8. Your gardens are great but not as precious as your little twinks. How adorable is she. Can she come on over and play with my little Maggie Mae( a cairn terrier). This is the first time I have visited your blog and I enjoyed it. Thanks a bunch, Jean in Virginia

  9. Another way to hide the speakers would be to install a little dust ruffle around the bottom of the cabinet. Lovely gardens!

  10. Hi Karla! What beautiful pictures of your garden! Just lovely! Little Twinks is so cute an just love how he was getting into all your shots. Little mug hound!
    Be a sweetie,

  11. Karla,
Your garden is beautiful. I didn’t realize you lived in Kansas. My husband and I just drove through Kansas on I-70 yesterday and today and I’m sad to say we did not see anything nearly so breathtaking. We are in Colorado now and the sites aren’t any better yet. Lol

  12. Karla,
Your cover idea for the speakers is a good one. Good use of paper and fabric.
How lush is your garden!! Thank you for the sharing all that beauty with us.

  13. Hi Karla! Your garden is just lovely! I love all the little details too. Like the chippy chair and the cute Welcome Sap Bucket hanging on the gate door. I have been looking for one of those. I was lucky enough to find a sweet little old chair at a garage sale this spring for my flower bed.
Love the idea for the speakers and the stereo cabinet is beautiful!
    Hugs,
    Amy

  14. Wow, I just had to water about an hour ago. Have to everyday pretty much here in East Texas. Love your piece of paradise, and of course the Yorkie. Mine I posted today. Just got cut, shampooed, and “purtied” up! Lilies are beautiful no matter what!

  16. Your garden is just beautiful, love the little extras nestled in here and there.Cone flowers are one of my favorite.

  17. Thanks for the tour! I love garden walks! I spent 3 hours weeding my “lush” veggie garden on Monday. I’m still not done but at least you can tell the volenteers from the main attraction. I should’ve done before and after pictures to keep me motivated!

  18. I ran across your post while searching for lace curtains. Inventive idea to use them to cover speakers. Thank you for the tour of your garden. I alway eny people who have green thumbs. Great work!
