A Hawaii Travel Journal

Odds 023
For my trip to Hawaii, I made up a couple of travel journals, one for me, and one for my sister-in-law, Terry, who we are meeting up with in Maui.

Odds 033

This one is for her.   The cover is layered in papers, images, paint, and modelling paste.

This one is mine, done in the same way. Its not quite complete, but I can finish my own any time. I wanted to  make sure the gift for Terry was ready for the trip.

My plan is to sit on the balcony and watch the ocean, relaxing  while I snip and glue as our husbands play golf.

I'm packing old papers, ribbons, lace, and all the essentials to work on these while we are there.

Odds 003

Usually, I'm not a big fan of scrap book paper, it does have its time and place, and this book was right for it. I bought a big, tropical themed stack pack for the main pages.

Then, I created some home made papers for accents.

Odds 004

Using bubble wrap and a wide brush, I blobbed and blotted colors till I got something I thought would look good in the books.

Some of it I tore before gluing in.

And I made lots of pockets to fill up with mementos, while leaving plenty of space for journalling too.

I had a great day working on these, I spent an entire afternoon and evening in the studio watching a whole season of Parenthood that I'd recorded and saved.  That show had me laughing and crying as I worked, this was a rough season for those Bravermens. After suffering through all of that with them, I was sooo ready for a vacation!

Hopefully, I'll have a full book to show you when I return.

  1. I really want to try one of these Journals one day. Also I was wondering if you scanned any of the Mermaid pictures? If so I would like to buy some from you. My daughters best friend is over the moon in love with mermaids. So much so that she’s getting a Tattoo of Mermaid flesh/scales(?) on her upper thigh. It doesn’t hurt to ask, right. I’ve loved your updates on FB about your trip. As always, thanks for sharing your life with us. Judi

  2. Are you on Maui now? I’ve made little journals to take on my last 3 trips to Hawaii (I know…lucky me…but you’ll find that you WILL go back). I do exactly as you say; sit on the lanai, gazing at the sea, and making entries in my journal every day. Which birds did I see; which fish; weather; dinner. I think it adds a nice element to the trip. Bon Voyage.

  3. Oh, I bet your sister-in-law was ecstatic over your beautiful creation for her! So gorgeous. I know you had fun playing around with the techniques to get just the look you wanted.

  4. This is just a stunning journal, Karla. I hate to say it but my things from Europe in APRIL are still waiting to be put in a book or used as inspiration for drawings. Three cheers for doing it then and there!
