A Modeling Career for Sugarwings and an answer to the MEAN comment

Sbella_booth_243 Wowwee! Have you seen this yet? Somerset has done it again, this magazine is just so, over the top, good! Kudos to Jo Packham, the editor.

The quality of the photos and stories are every bit as good as the book that preceded it.  Impressive. Here is a link to Jenny Doh’s blog with her post about this issue.

Now, I am really overwhelmed to think that my studio (!?) will be featured in  a future issue of this publication.  Heck, my head might not even fit through the doors of the studio after that, this is a cool thing to be in!Sbella_booth_253

I’m extremely proud to be included in this issue, for this little corner on the back page. A photo I took of Sugarwings helping me face paint at a birthday party was used.

She is not wearing a shirt, so I am hoping this won’t be a big career move for her. I’d rather not see her featured topless in any more magazines as an adult.Sbella_booth_248

And yes, I KNOW I should be cleaning and getting ready for company, packing up supplies for my Silver Bella classes, but I ended up making more bottle brush trees, and while cutting apart the strands of old mercury glass beads,  I decided to bottle a few of them.Sbella_booth_249

If I don’t end up selling these, I think they’d be cute as a bug in my kitchen replacing the spices on my rack during the holidays!Sbella_booth_251

The teeny blue ribbons and gold and white labels are some that I got in a mini swap with my Dutch pal, Lili.Sbella_booth_256

Sugarwings ended up spending the evening with me, so I stopped gluing goodies to trees and took the advice of my friend, Valita, who said I should sell bottle brush tree decor kits at Silver Bella.Sbella_booth_257

I bagged up some trinkets to add to trees, each bag is different and most are best suited for the taller trees, although I’d say that if you were decorating a bunch of little trees, the stuff could be spread out among a few.  The old clip on earrings (that I cut the backs off of) are great to use as ornaments on a bigger tree, but work better as a single tree topper on the tiny trees.Sbella_booth_255

This tree is one of the larger ones, so it could handle a handful of old earrings glued to it.

Tomorrow, Beth, Carol, and I are going to visit Deb and check out the Curious Sofa Holiday Open House.  Deb has quite a way with display,  this should be fun!  Plus, dinner after with my two buds will be a nice way to spend an evening and avoid cleaning my studio.

And I seem to be very fond of dinner lately… I gained TEN POUNDS since I turned 50 six months ago. Is this what being old does to you? A complete shut down of the metabolism?????

Blue_bucket_004 By the way, I got my very first MEAN comment yesterday by someone who thinks Twinkle should not be having puppies.

This person left an purposely incorrect email address, so I couldn’t answer her.   So, I’ll say it here-

Yes, I know that there are LOTS of dogs and cats without homes in the world, and I have taken in my share of them plus donated time to our local shelter,  as well as donating art to fund raising auctions and free murals  that I painted on the walls of the building.Leandra_and_dusty_010_2

Just because I raise pure bred Dorkies doesn’t make me a bad, uncaring person.  These babies will go to people who will love them and give them good homes.

I believe in helping the less fortunate dogs, and have been the mastermind behind some adoptions of homeless dogs, numerous times.  But I still like my Dorky babies and will always have them around. They bring joy to me and to many others.

Just like I believe in recycling and buying as much as I can second hand to help lower my own carbon foot print, but that doesn’t mean I am not going to buy something brand new and shiny here and there too.Sweat_treats_and_roses_106

I heat with wood as much as I can, turn off lights, put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat, run as many errands as I can at once so I won’t waste gas.  I do what I can to save the planet.  But that doesn’t mean I won’t drive across country to take a trip or spend a day driving from garage sale to garage sale.

I guess what I am trying to say, is that I believe in being a responsible inhabitant of our planet, and I do try to do good things. But life is give and take.  You cut back here and there, help out when you can, but you have to live it and splurge on the things you enjoy.

  1. well said Karla , I would love a little dorkie myself , and i have adopted (rescued) stolen purebred dogs myself. I have actually never got to go and choose a dog that I would love , the ones that I have had over the years have needed homes for one reason or another.I think that is great that you are responsibley breeding Twinkles , she has a loving home and a happy life . I have seen litle dogs like her that have been in puppy mills and have never known a good life. i think that you make it nice for those that want to have a choice to be able to get themselves a properly bred and healthy puppy. And we just won’t mention the 10 lbs either will we , you look great for 50 . Donna

  2. Karla , why have you not done something with that wheelbarrow of yours ?? It’s just crying out to be treated to a Karla special. lol Donna

  3. Well said Karla! I don’t understand the need for people to make mean comments but then are unwilling to stand up for themselves and hide behind incorrect emails, fake accounts, etc. The bottle brush kits look lovely along with the little bottles of mercury glass beads. I will definately purchase some – if there are any left! P.S. Obama won! Yipeeee!!!!!

  4. I love the new issue of Where Women Create! I agree it is very well done. Congrats on getting in it! I love your tree trimming kits and would love one if you have an left after Silver Bella. And I’m sorry someone left a rude comment. There’s really no need for that and you responded perfectly. HUGS!

  5. Good for you, Karla! I’m looking forward to seeing the new publication and recognizing so many wonderful bloggers – you included – in it. And Sugarwings!
As to the mean comment – some people feel like they have a right to judge others – and they don’t, none of us do. You shouldn’t have to defend yourself against such people, but you did a great job.
All your Silver Bella pretties are so wonderful! I bet you can hardly wait.
    Lorrie

  6. Congratulions to you and Sugarwings. What an honor. I hope she only poses with her clothes on in future publications too!!! LOL! What an adorabe baby. I love all your items too and your response to the idiot commenter.

  7. Before I read the entire post I thought someone was mad about the adorable Obama Baby. LOL
Some people need to get a life. Jackie is our first yorkie. She is a wonderful addition to our family and life would not be the same without that four pound fur ball.
My motto is “eat ,craft and be merry.” I used to love cake and sweets . Now, it’s spicy stuff and real food. I guess we all change.
Sugarwings is already famous. I was going through some blogs this morning and I came across a card you had sent someone with Sugarwings picture on it. She is already famous in blog land.

  8. Congrats on the magazine and the beginning of Sugarwings modeling career. The mean comment is a subject I hold very dear to my heart. I have rescued off the streets for some years now and have three now from the streets. It use to be only mutts, but now there are more and more purebreds on the streets also. Puppy Mills should be closed down for the way the dogs are treated. Let’s be honest irresponsible people are the cause of the strays not people like you who breeds their dogs responsibly. I wish every dog could be treated like part of the family like ours. Its unfortunate that the almighty dollar is really the cause of over breeding and puppy mills and the animals are the ones suffering. Hugs to you!

  9. Karla, congratulations to you and Miss Sugarwings for getting your very cute selves into that lovely magazine…i’m sorry about your mean comment…that stinks…happened to me once, at least my gal had the courtesy to send her hate via email rather than a comment on my blog…and get real: peeps who want pure breds are going to buy pure breds, they are not looking for dogs at a shelter…i think peeps who have no intention of breeding their dogs should absolutely have them fixed…if you are a breeder, that would just be silly!!!
ps:i will take that 10 lbs off your hands if i get to choose where it goes…hee hee!!!

  10. I’m looking forward to seeing you and Sugarwings!!!
Now I have an important request :c} PLEASE take lots of pictures at Curious Sofa!!!! They are one of the BEST places to get all kinds of inspirations. And I can’t see a trip to KC anywhere in my near future!!!

  11. Karla, I love your response to that NASTY mystery blogger, I really don’t get it how and why do those kind of people even visit Blogs, our Blogging World on the net is something very special and reserved for those Sugar Special People, that mystery person has a troubled life, now lets move on to you and Sugarwings Congratulations your Craft Room impressed me, and looks like it caught a lot of attention.
    Hugs, Diane

  12. Hi Karla, Congrats on gettin gito that ownderful new magazine, Sugarwings is so adorable……Sorry about the MEAN comment, but I think you handles it great…and besides, you do not have to explain why you do things anyway….We are who we are and those people unfortunatly are who they are and they are unhappy people…
    Hugs
    Brenda

  13. Karla, first of all congrats on your studio feature!
Second, as much as we try to avoid it there are those out there who think they need to press their opinions upon others. I think that you addressed that mean comment very diplomatically. It was very well written and not fueled by the emotion of being upset. I wish I could respond to things like that, very tactful.

  14. 10 lbs huh…yup! me too.lol stinks!! I love your little puppy!! Thats to funny about the modeling…shes so adorable, cant wait to get the mag.! I can point and shout…”I KNOW HER” lol. Have a great time with Natasha! Laurie

  15. Karla, dont worry about that lady & her comment. If she truly believed in herself & the point she was trying to make, she wouldn’t be so damn chicken to leave her name.
I have a toy yorkie. She’s the cutest thing! When I talked to the breeder about breeding my dog she got all pissie and said that her dogs were not meant for breeding.
But after doing some research, I determined it was costly, time consuming & seemed to be a very hard job! One piece of literature said some time the owners have to help in delivering the pups. OK, I’m not up for that. Your Dorkies are precious & they bring a smile to my face every time you share a pic. Do what you do… and forget the rest! See you in a week. xoxo, Joanna

  16. Love the issue and sugarwings how cute! Your studio is fabulous you should be proud. Obviously that comment was by someone who isn’t very confident. It bugs me when others stick their nose into someone elses business but don’t have the balls to come forward.
Have fun tomorrow! Dinner with friends is always fun 🙂

  17. You and Sugarwings just belong in that magazine! I’m going to try to get it here. I loved that book by Jo Packham. It fills me with joy that you are actually use the stuff I sent you. I have to admit (blush blush) that I’m still ‘sitting on’ the stuff you and Beth sent me. I know, I know, you have already written that it’s better to use all your good supplies, but somehow the right occasion still hasn’t arrived. I’ll let you know when it does!
You know that I know nothing about dogs…is there a difference between a Dorkie and a Yorkie? I think you dealt well with the nasty and cowardice comment. Every one who reads your blog knows that you are fond of your dogs, to say the least, so your dogs and future dogs will be leading a happy life. I wonder if that same person tells a blogger who shares her pregnancy with us that it would be wise not to have children as there are too many children on this world already, which is the truth seen from a certain point of view. Mmmm I think I’m a bit carried away, I just hate cowards and negative people. She might as well asked you if you were aware that etc.etc. ‘C’est le ton qui fait la musique’, as the french say or in english it’s the tone that makes the music.
Last words: I think Natasha and Heather will be thrilled to see your new pieces and they will not be thrilled if you sa’ ‘look, all my windows are cleaned’. (and Heather is a kind of professional cleaner she told us once, either her house is a mess, according to our dutch saying: under the lantern it’s very dark or you cannot beat her anyway! Take care and enjoy your dinner with your friends!

  18. You are too funny–about Sugarwings topless as a career move. Your studio is adorable as is Sugarwings. You should be in more magazines! 🙂

  19. I can’t wait to get my hands on that magazine. That would be fun to see your studio featured in it!
The bottle tree kits are a great idea and I bet they sell well!

  20. Great post Karla. Who cares what gutless individuals who don’t leave their names think. The people who really matter know what you are about and you don’t need to justify your actions to us. Personally, I can’t wait to see the photos of your cute little purpose bred puppies!!
Congrats too on having your studio featured.
    Hugs,
    Kerryanne

  21. Well, I get all my dogs “fixed” because I believe there are too many unwanted dogs and cats…BUT…if a few responsible individuals who can afford to make sure the pups have good homes, and breed them sensibly, don’t breed, then what would happen to perpetuating the purebreds? And I have bought too many dogs at pet shops, which, in my opinion, is a very expensive rescue. We all do the best we can. And if you are not going to have an open-minded, give and take discussion, be quiet, nasty comment person!

  22. Congrats on being in the mag….you and sugarwings.
Do not let the bad apples spoil your pie….
It is your life….your doggies…your choice!
We live in America. I do not know why people have to comment in a NEGATIVE WAY!
    Have fun at Silver Bella~

  23. Kathy in Chicago

Keep your fun giddy style goin’ and don’t let the “grinches” get you down. Your reply was quite a good one, my dear. For some reason in this world today there are those who feel that they can impose their beliefs and ideas on everyone whether these people choose to embrace them or not. I especially love when it comes from someone who won’t even sign their name to the very ideas they feel are worth forcing on someone else! You are wonderful and talented with a great sense of humor. Many a morning has been started at my house with a cup of coffee and a peek into your beautiful treasures, darling Sugarwings, and those cute as a button “dorkies”. It’s not as if you were breeding them to make COATS – ala Cruella-de-ville…… You sparkle, Karla, in more ways then just misplaced glitter. Keep on shining!!! – Kathy

  24. Way to go Karla. You will never be able to figure out some people. Your little doggies will all be loved and go to good homes. Most of us try to do what we can for this good old earth we live on, but we also have to enjoy life some too. You are truly one of the most creative gals I know in using up “used” stuff in creating things we all can covet and enjoy. You just keep on keeping on and heck with anyone that doesn’t appreciate you. We won’t talk about age or added pounds as that takes the fun out of it all. You have a wonderful evening.

  25. Well …. I love your little bottles of beads that you’ve made up. I really love the decorated bottle brush trees . I think it’s neat that your sweet Sugar Wings is in the picture going into the magazine. I also think it’s great that your Dorkie is going to have puppies….I just wish I lived closer to you because I’ve always wanted a Yorkie and that will be the next dog I get . Right now I’m mama a little poodle girl & a Bicha-poo boy. You are a very talented and lucky woman in many ways .Be happy and ignore people who are negative. :o) Sue

  26. go karla go karla…i’m seeing a “glitter” on the horizon!!! you are one of the most wonderful people so giving and caring..and what you do in your life is YOUR BUSINESS…. anyone who actually KNOWS you knows that….hugz and love

  27. Can’t wait to get my hands on that magazine!! Congrats to you and Sugar Wings! Just love the vintage tree trimming kits! Counting down the days…
So sorry that you got such a nasty comment – there is just no reason to be that way!

  28. Oh my goodness Karla….Your first negative comment and one that totally doesn’t make any sense? We all know what a sweet and kind person you are! I for one can’t wait to see new puppies on your blog! My best friend rescues greyhound but her two furrier babies are pure bred manx coon cats. She certainly doesn’t think like that commenter.
Also…I just have to say this…I was so very happy to see that Obama baby on your blog! What a wonderful night we had last night!

  29. LOL about the Sugarwings comment.
Congratulations on having your studio published in the magazine. You deserve it. Your studio is fabulous!
I don’t “get” someone’s need to leave a negative comment on a personal blog and then not having the guts to own up to it. It’s sad to think that this could be someone, who otherwise, has been leaving you nice comments. It violates your trust.
Anyone who has read your blog knows that you are a responsible person. Sometimes things can be carried TOO FAR. The world would be a better place if we all lived happy balanced lives. Lord save us from the fanatics.
    ~elaine~

  30. Fa la la! We’re ignoring that mean comment. You know in your heart all the good you do (for animals and pet-lovers) and your awareness of your carbon footprint. We are FORERUNNERS of modern recycling!

  31. well I say mean people suck! You don’t have to explain yourself!
I love the idea of the little kits for bottle brush trees! I cut apart a bunch of my beads too. Those little bottles (prescription?) are adorable!

  32. I’m so excited for Sugarwings and her topless photo! How funny is that?
Twinks…should get to reproduce if Twinks wants to…its her little right as a woman…I love that bashful Twinks photo!

  33. Why do people presume to tell others how to live their lives, write their blogs, care for their dogs, etc? *shaking my head*
    Love Sugarwings modeling debut…how cute!

  34. Hi Karla!
Don’t waste your energy on that ninny! She probably doesn’t even recycle her soup cans! Anyone who reads your blog can see how you take old forgotten items and make them wonderful again for everyone to enjoy, something that not everybody has the vision for but you do it for them!
You are wonderful and I would love to see Twinkle’s little pups!
And about that 10lbs…..you are not alone!
    xoxo karen….

  35. Oh how proud you must be of Sugarwings being in the magazine.
Mean people usually remain anonymous because their lives are so boring. **here’s a smile for them, because they obviously need one**
Congrats on your studio being in the next publication.

  36. I LOVE the kids Karla! I wish I was going becaue I would LOVE a few of those bottled beads!! Like you said, how PERFECT in a kitchen! It is perfect for my new theme too 🙂
As for the mean commenter, GET A LIFE!!!! Karla, I have never even met you but I KNOW how much you love animals, just by reading your blog! I too have adopted dogs. I commend you for the work you have done. That person needs to mind her own business! I just adopted a needy chihuahua last weekend. It feels so good just to know he has a warm comfy place to sleep at night. If I had the money, I would have a house full!!
    Love you LOTS, (((HUGS)))
    Amy

  37. Karla, Your Dorkie’s are adorable! Last year I got a mean comment about the crown I wore at SB, and how inappropriate that it was, and that I should be ashamed of myself…of course it was anonymous. Sometimes people just spend too much time trying to drag others down, instead of lift them up. See ya in a week!! Natalie

  38. Love the picture of sugarwings! You are a creative and caring person. Anyone who knows you, or reads your blog, knows that! You are a responsible pet owner and your dorkies puppies will be loved and cared for. You do NOT run a puppy mill and you are not selling your puppies to a shop that puts them in cages! We all love you Karla! Boo to the anonymous mean ranter!!

  39. I saw this post yesterday, but had to leave and bite my tongue for awhile before I came back here. First, the photo is delightful and didn’t even notice her attire until you pointed it out, ha! The bobbles look so cute in the jars and I so enjoy seeing your creative ways to use things. I am now lusting over that bottle brush tree.
As for the mean comment, while I have never formally met you, I can’t believe in any way shape or form that you would even consider endangering an animal or not do your part for those pitiful creatures out there who are less fortunate than your babies are. While I can appreciate the overall thought of her comment, I don’t think labelling you in that catagory was at all deserved. My home is overflowing with “adoptive” children of just the most wonderful creatures I could hope to have. I appreciate your desire to have more puppies and know you will assure they all have proper homes and love. You are too special to let others judge you in such a way. I will continue to enjoy your blog, your creations, your stories, and the lovely animals that share your life!

  40. I don’t have my copy of this new publication…yet…BUT I will as soon as I find one here! How cool for your SugarWings to be included! If one of you was going to be publised painting without a shirt on I guess it’s better it was her! LOL… {oh my goodnes…where did that come from ???}
    Meet you soon…
    *Heidi* Everyday Cookies

  41. Bravo, Karla! I just had to stop by and give you a supportive shout-out. I can’t imagine where that kind of unkindness works for anyone. I love your bottle trees and trims. I hope you have some when I stop by at the Vendor Faire. Kristina

  42. You go, girl! First of all, there is a spot for all dogs — some people want a special kind. That’s cool. Other’s don’t care. That’s cool, too. Great reply.
Second, your stuff is gorgeous as always! How I wish I was at Silver Bella to see your stuff and shop! Not the same online!
Can’t wait to see the Where Women Create and hope you’re there in the next one!

  43. OMG! If all the breeders were like you then we would not be having so many unwanted pets.
I am a huge animal lover and work with rescue groups. So I would be all over you if I thought you were doing anything harmful to the animals.
Having one dog that has puppies that you find homes for is not a bad thing. You do not have them lined up in cages without a life other then pushing out puppies. Then sending them to the pound when they are to old to “work” for you.
My lands. Some people just love to stir up problems.
Don’t listen to them. They always hide behind thier remarks and never come out of the wordwork to face you straight on.
    Don’t give them a 2nd thoughts!
    Hugs,
    Joanne

  44. Gretchen Schaumann

    Karla-
Congrats on Sugar Wing being in the magazine. How fun is that? Too funny about her modeling career comment you made. : )
As for the “mean comment”, obviously that persons mama didn’t do them right and teach them “if you can’t say anything nice, than don’t say anything at all”.
You obviously are a very loving, caring person to both humans as well as your animals, and I know you’d be a fabulous person to buy a puppy from.
Don’t give this person another thought, there are dozens of us that love you and think you’re awesome, so what if there is one negative person in the blog land. Fortunatly most readers are positive and encouraging to one another and not attacking.
    Gretchen

  45. I cant believe people sometimes they need there heads examined in my opinion…….you are always going to get people like that…I do have a question for you though….I have a dorkie myself and boy does she give joy to all of oyr lives but so many people are begging me to breed her for they want a puppy but arent sure where to look for a stud any ideas????????????thanks takew care
