Abracadabra

Magic_wand_016 We had a slight break in the cold, yesterday the temperature zooooomed all the way up to 32 and that was enough to thaw my fingers out and get the crafty juices flowing again.

Magic_wand_017

Of course, I woke up to 5 degrees this morning and news that the temps would be in the teens and twenties all week.

But yesterday, I  was able to stay put in my studio and made magic.  Well, magic wands!Magic_wand_025

Jenny Doh at Somerset Life sent me a list of topics that they are featuring in July to see if I wanted to send something in to them.Magic_wand_027

"Magic Wands" was the one that leaped off the page at me!

Now, of course, this doesn’t mean she will like them or even want to use them, my wands might not be what they had in mind at all.

Magic_wand_028 But I wouldn’t mind.  I could use a wand or two anyway. Who couldn’t?

Wish me luck, please. Or maybe I should swish one of them around and wish for luck myself?Sweat_treats_and_roses_130

And, sadly- I finished all my book covers for the swap. I am going to miss this project.

Here are the backs of the ones I did yesterday.Sweat_treats_and_roses_131

They range from way, way over the top-Sweat_treats_and_roses_135

To simple and sweet.Sweat_treats_and_roses_132

I was thrilled to see that this necklace formed a heart shape when fussed around with and glued down.Sweat_treats_and_roses_133

I don’t have all of my cards ready yet, for my own page in the book, and of course, Beth and I need to assemble the books themselves.  But I already am missing the swap, it was such a joy to make all of these!  I am not sure how many I made.Sweat_treats_and_roses_119  Too many, but we’ll be able to pick and chose as we assemble.

This one that I showed you previously, got a re-do yesterday.  I decided it was too heavy with the key on it. We are trying to keep the shipping costs down.Sweat_treats_and_roses_124

So, it became this. I won’t use it for the swap, I will list it on Etsy later today. After Sugarwings goes home, there is no way I will have time to do that with that little bundle of energy around!Sweat_treats_and_roses_129

I have added quite a bit more to this piece, including the banner, "Flow’rs and Dreams at the Dance" on silk brocade wallpaper.

The background got treated to some robin’s egg blue paint, behind the ballerinas as well as on the back ground of the grey wallpaper, and as a swirling border around the edges of the piece.

I am enjoying my resolution to add hand painted touches to my collage work.  Sweat_treats_and_roses_125

I glued German die cuts around the page too.  One little butterfly is on the vintage playing card, and flowers form a garland that looks like it goes under the center medallion.Sweat_treats_and_roses_126_2

I am trying to not let the cold get to me too much.  Today, I will build up the wood stove and will keep warm by chasing that fairy grand baby from one end of the house to the other. That is, when she will let me put her down. She is of the opinion that Grandmama Karkie is supposed to carry her everywhere when she comes to visit.  And I really don’t mind.  She is so tiny and cuddly, but won’t be like this forever. I need to take advantage of it while I can.Sweat_treats_and_roses_136_2

Maybe she can help me pack for my trip to sunny California.  I had no luck finding a spring dress, but did find a black and white one on clearance that wasn’t too wintry.  I just hope it isn’t too young for me…. I might try it on today and ask Sugarwings what she thinks.

Magic_wand And remember my worries about finding sandals in Kansas in winter, that actually fit my Fred Flintstone feet?

I desperately searched one end of Kansas City to another.

Just when I was about to give up, I decided to bite the bullet and go in Nordstroms, and not even look at price tags, just see if they could help me.

The sales lady took one look at my feet and said "YOUR TOES ARE ALL THE SAME LENGTH!!!!"

Then, she went into the back and came out with the prettiest little bronze strappy sandals with a small heel and a square toe that fit me like I was Cinderella.  And only $39.  At first I thought they said $399, some sandals are that high there. Wow, my lucky day.  And that was before I got a magic wand!

I’m off to fetch that baby.  Talk about lucky– the rest of my day is going to be wonderful!!

  2. You always make me smile, thank you for spending time on your blog (even though I wish you updated more often, I do appreciate what you do, when you do it!)
Glad you found sandles! Your toes ARE all the same length! But that is better than mine which are all different sizes..plus I’m clumsy and have banged my feet into things which caused me to loose several toenails… and they grew back in CROOKED!! I’d gladly trade in my feet for flintsone feet!!
Enjoy California. Wish I was going!

  6. Beautiful wands…I hope they are picked. The last of your covers are as beautiful as the others. I can hardly wait to get the book. And, isn’t it nice when you luck out and find exactly what you are looking for.

  7. I love those wands and of course all your bookcovers and other creative expressions ( it’s too much for me to remember let alone make such an abundance of very beautiful things!!) I have those Fred feet too and I wear (fake)crocs, but I know that there are moments in a girls life, when you not only want to feel like a princes but look like one too, with or without wand. Good to hear that you have those princessandals now, enjoy them! hugs, L.

I’M CURRENTLY HOSTING A WAND SWAP!!! so much fun seeing them fly in! yours are spectacular! so where are the sandal pictures!!!?

  9. You aren’t the only one with Fred Flintstone feet my dear! Not only do I have what my husband snidely calls duck feet, but I have the hands to match! But I’m OK with that, at least we don’t have SNAGGLE-toes.
I check your blog everyday and I too appreciate your taking the time to share and inspire!

  10. You crack me up with your feet issues! My daughter has the same problem, all her toes are the same length! Nordstrom always has shoes for every foot – and you got a deal! But as my mom used to say “just be happy you have feet that WORK”
Love all the pretties here today!

  11. Hi Karla-It’s freezin seazin here too. Ugh! But, as you said it’s a good time to be creative. In the summer I never get off my feet or have time to even think in the gift shop, so I crave this period of quiet. I just wanted you to know that I was thinking of you and your grandbaby when I put a couple of songs by Winnie the Pooh and 2 versions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on my blog. Thought she might like to listen to them as you create together. I know my little ones will enjoy them too.
    Hugs and Happy Creating,
    Pam 🙂

  12. I love those book covers ~ you are so talented ! Your toes are the same length, but atleast you dont have one toe that is so much longer than your big toe ! Oh yes, thats fun 🙂

  13. Karla, the wands are gorgeous. So swish, swish, swish, there go your wands into Somerset Life.
The book covers are so pretty.
Now go have fun with Sugarwings.
Oh nearly forgot. Congrats on the bargain shoes.
    Alison

  14. The wands are magic! I love them. Gosh..a long time ago, I was a regular designer for 2 craft magazines. I miss those days! I may have to try doing it again.
Your work is so lovely! I’m in awe.
    Shelley

  15. The magic wands are, indeed, magical! I’m loving how amazing all the bookcovers are all so different with great attention to all the little artistic details.
And a good shoe day can never be underestimated.

  16. I’m still giggling at your foot picture. Now, I am dying to see the sandals and dress and hear if the sandals are comfy. You’ll have to take lots of pictures of that event. Bring your pretty magic wand too in case it is still raining.

  17. Oh, you lucky girl!!! You need to spread some of your magic around here! I can’t get over the fact that Somerset checks with you FIRST before writing stories because you are the QUEEN of the paper craft! Or Princess…take your pick. Have fun with Sugarwings! That is one way to stay warm. We finally got a break in the coldness today, thank goodness!

  18. Karla – I just found your cottage via another cottage! I love it here! I could spend hours looking through your lovely vintage beauties! I’m from Kansas too! I live in Colorado now, have for the last 20 years, but the winter pics look sooooo familiar! Marva
