Around the May Pole

What's the only thing better than scoring over a dozen floral hats at  a flea market? Playing with them when you get home! Especially when you have friends who want to play too.

IMG_0852

These little guys are starting to get interesting.  They all try to come to me (but are still kind of stumbly) when they hear my voice now.  It has not been easy to get any work done today, its the first day that the pups really seem to want to spend as much time with me as they do with their mom.  Its funny to see how fast they develop and change. Just yesterday, they were mostly sleeping and today they are crying until they get picked up!

Between snuggles, I've been plucking hats.  My hat storage is overflowing, so I needed to make space by pulling all the flowers off the newest arrivals.  Finding 15 in one day is kind of amazing, even with my hat whispering skills. But I have to admit that I had a little help at the flea mkt, Beth pointed a few out to me and was nice enough to let me at them.

She and I are good shopping partners. I try to point out things I know she'll love. Even if I love them too.  We kind of let things go to who ever has the most passion for the item, or take turns with the greatest stuff, or even share. We started a wallpaper pact years ago to prevent jealousy. If one of us scores big on wallpaper, we always share with the other.

(The hat with the brown ribbon only had a few flowers on it, but LOOK at that fabulous dotted Swiss ruffled ribbon that rims it!!)

See why I can't resist these guys?  They are finally starting to look around and observe their world and its so cute when they just stare into my eyes.  I don't know if I've ever been more in love with a batch of pups… its going to be hard to say goodbye in just a few weeks!

IMG_0860

Its always hard to say good bye to the flowers too…  I fall a bit in love with each bloom.  I was reading Jenny's blog the other day and drooling over some flowers she used on a May basket, then she mentioned she had bought them from me!

Its never easy to say good bye to Sugarwings when she goes home to her mommy or daddy either, but its easier knowing that her parents are generous with letting us have time with her and with them too.   We are so blessed and lucky that our extended family can all "share" her and get along.  Even though her parents aren't together, we are all still family.  I'm hoping that her Daddy's new family will be able to blend with us all too.

My theory is that you can't have too many people to love.

We celebrated May Day together by going to a carnival at her school, then my handsome husband and I did hours and hours of yardwork.

IMG_0573
The school is out in the country, and was a lovely setting for all of the events. The big kids did a May Pole dance, there were arts and crafts, live music, and a hula hoop class.  (That's my husband showing his moves)

Our tiny little hooper had a blast.

Especially with the glue and scissors. Sometimes I wonder if she really cares about creating anything, all she cares about is cutting and gluing. That kid is obsessed with scissors and glue.

And when I buy her clothes at Goodwill (this is a $4 dress) I can relax and enjoy watching her go wild with the glue.

I probably shouldn't go so many days without posting, I tend to have too much to say as it is, when I post every day or two!  It was such a busy and fun weekend that  there is just too much to blather on about.  Flats of flowers, working in the garden, redoing a guest room, parties, boating, puppies to play with, May poles and more.  No wonder I didn't have a chance to do a post!

I'll leave you with some photos of the flower packs I added to the shop, stop running on and on!

  3. OH MY, Karla, what a beautiful post with all your flowers, pups, Sugarwings and pretty water. The hats around my area are hard to come by and you found soooo many in one day!!!! I absolutely love the pics of your sweet puppies. Thank you for brightening my day.

  4. Oh good gosh girl, I’m not even going to talk about how there are NO hats here in Texas. I’m not going to call you & your sidekick hoarders, no not going there. 15?! Last time I found one it has 3 little sad flowers on it & they wanted 25. After reading Beth’s flea market post & this one I’m booking my ticket to KS. Sugarwings is getting bigger everyday, such a big girl. And yes, coming from a broken home I can tell you, there are some benefits. I don’t know what I’d do without my stepmother. Another plus, lots more presents at Christmas & birthdays!

  6. Karla,
You have our done yourself with adorable puppy shots. Every time I see one, my heart just cries out to have one!!!!
And the hats…oh, my. They are so incredible. I don’t see many hats around here either. You are soooo lucky. And lucky that Beth can give them up to you.
And the carnival…is that a good old-fashioned Maldorf School carnival or is Sugarwings at Waldorf yet? The thiing I like best about Waldorf were the crafts, all with natural materials. Surprise, surprise!

  11. oh my word, I just love your hats. I am trying to build up a collection of them – with the intention of wearing them – but it’s not so easy here. I’ve got 4 so far. My favourite is a pinky/red one that I use as a summer hat. http://cottonrose.blogspot.com/2009/04/easter-bonnet.html but my favourite is a white bridal one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8100824@N06/3506560429/
I found the seller via flickr. They run a vintage shop, so I paid quite a lot for it, but I just HAD to have it. You’d have a great time pulling all the flowers from it! One day I’ll get a chance to wear it. If I’d had it when Humbug was christened, I’d have worn it for that!
The little pup babies are so sweet, and growing up so quickly.
Time I was off. a busy week ahead. Glad I stopped in here first though, to enjoy all your lovely May Day photos.
    have a lovely week xx

  12. It’s really normal for kids Sugarwing’s age to be more interested in the PROCESS of creating rather than the PRODUCT. She’ll get more into the product in a few years. Right now, she’s experimenting and learning how to use all the fun materials.

  13. Those puppies are too much! I can’t believe at that small they are searching out your voice! That means they will make great pets because they are already socializing with humans! They are just too stinkin precious!
    Keep blathering….I like it! karen…

  14. Your pups are adorable!! And those hats are beautiful! I can’t imagine finding so many lovelies in one place, in one day! I want to come shopping with you. For now, I’ll check out your shop.

  15. I love all the flowers, just love them — I never find those hats so I’m very jealous. Did you have your birthday yet? Happy birthday, Karla! Keep loving life!

  16. How you can find 15 hats in one outing is beyond my comprehension, Karla. There are no hats here at all. Oh, those puppies sure are adorable. p.s. sound like you have a rare thing – a functional family, as opposed to a dysfunctional one 🙂

  17. kARLA , SO BUSY — BuT OH SO FUN — Life is like that, we are blessed — see my blog for my blessings — — such joy to see your Sugar wings –and the pups — the cutest pic yet – also the flowers (drooling here ) —
    HUGZ Kathy – ga ♥

  18. I am giving you big props for being able to pluck those flowers! That is a GREAT idea!! I am a hat junkie…all my friends (all the good ones at least) know it. I just scored 3 beauties myself!! I am not ready to pluck their pretty little petals off yet. I am in the process of building my stash for Silver Bella so I might have too, just not yet. I am so touched by your words about your little granddaughter and her soon to be additional family. I was the child of divorced parents and I would have LOVED for them to be so mature about still being a “family”. Your a good woman and she is a lucky little girl!!

  19. LORRAINE BELL

Morning Karla…your puppies &vintage hats are gorgeous…love you comment about having LOTS of people to love …how true.we all have extended families anymore..we have to make room for everyone..&love..Lorraine

  20. Hi Karla!
As much of a sucker as I am for beautiful vintage hats and millinery, I’m that much crazier for a cute lil’ snuggly puppy! Wow, those little fellas are just PRECIOUS!
Thank you so much for your comments on my photography post, I really do appreciate the input. 🙂
    Have a wonderful week,
    Anne

  21. So happy to find your blog! Lovely, lovely! such sweet puppies, and I love your vintage items and other things. Wish we had more flea markets, etc where I live, you get to some great places.
    Your pictures are just great!

  22. Hi Karla, Thank you for the cute, cute puppy pics!
They certainly are getting big so quickly!!!!!! I just
want to reach out and hold them. : )
I know you are busy but, it would be so nice to see
a mini video of them like you did with Twinkle’s last
pups. Sugarwings is so adorable in that dress and
please tell your Husband that he does a great job
    hula-hooping.
    Hugs,
    Janis

  23. Love the flowers and the hats. I would give anything to have some of my mother’s hats from the early 60’s she was doing some modeling in New York City at the time and had several photos of her posing in the hats. I remember looking in hat boxes as a child and thinking I wish I was big so I could wear one of those hats.

  24. Ahha! You did have help, but from Beth instead of Sugarwings like I suspected. Well done to the both of you, especially for having such a great time together. ;-> You are right, can’t have too many people to love.
Thanks for taking time out between your full life of happiness to share with all of us. My day is brighter by seeing the magic in yours.

  25. Sugarwings is so fortunate to have all those adults in her life that can put personal feelings aside and do whats best and RIGHT for her!
Did I miss something? Her daddies “new family?”
