Art ADHD

Today, I finished a fairy painting that was more than a bit overdue…. Sorry, Janice! But its finally ready now!!

I was given a stack of pictures of these two sisters, and some info about things they liked. The older girl enjoys pulling her baby sister in a wagon, so I put the littlest fairy in a flower petal cart.

As proper Lawrence, Kansas girls, they both like the Jayhawks. So I added a pet Jayhawk for them.

And the older girl enjoys reading to her sister.  How sweet is that? So, I included a bag of fairy tale books.

After I have my paints out, I wonder why I don't do watercolor more often.  I think that I should at least leave some paints and brushes on my desk to remind me that I am a painter…. and maybe to incorporate some painting into my collage work too.

My interests are spread out quite a bit. I adore working with millinery, ephemera, and well, most things old and pretty. But painting was my first love and I should try to get back to it more often.

Vintage roses 002

What I really love to paint are flowers. Especially if I make the picture look vintage.  But I do love cutting and gluing, and using cherished old lace, old postcards, WALLPAPER (yummy yummy wallpaper),  and rhinestones in my art too. So, I can't picture going back to painting full time like I used to.  Its just too fun to find cool old things and imagine what they can be made into.

Plus, the hunt is half the fun.  As much as I love to paint, going to a retail store and buying a tube of paint is no comparison to hitting a flea market to find supplies!

Even silly things like this.

And even sillier ones like this!  Life is too short to limit myself to just one style and one type of art.  So, I'll dabble in paint like always, and still flit from idea to idea, playing with ephemera, and making stuff no one wanted into something pretty.

Even though, some days I wonder… if I had stuck with one thing and really worked with it for a life time, would I actually be successful?

Or just bored?

If you are like me and love to use vintage supplies, I'm adding these items to the Boutique, with more coming in the next few days.

  1. Beautiful images today as always, Karla. My goodness, I’ve got exactly the same clown and strong man that you do lurking in an old shadow box of goodies of mine from my childhood. Don’t think mine have the candleholders attached, tho! Small world, huh?!?

  2. I think you should paint more often too, I love your watercolors, I have mine right beside me here at my desk, do you remember the one?? I love this fairy painting. Reminds me of the good times you, Sandy, and I had with you painting murals on Lauren’s wall and then Sandy’s friend Marilyn’s wall (where we had that minor little earthquake).
I loved my Gothic Ghost wall hanging I received as a prize. Thank you !!!!

  3. Love these little fairy people you painted. Actually, I love all the paintings that you do. Here’s what I think since you asked. Would you have been successful if you stuck to only one thing? Probably. Would you have been bored? Definitely. If you only cook chicken, and you perfect ALL of your chicken dishes, you can probably cook a mean chicken dinner. But aren’t you gonna be sick of eating nothing but chicken? Where’s the fish, where’s the apples, where’s the artichokes…see what I mean?! You are welcome and my bill for your consultation is in the mail. :o)
Have a great day, Karla! To me, you are a huge success!!!

  4. OH MY GOSH (how many times have I started my comments to you like this?) BUT OMG!!!! You are sooooo talented you blow my mind. Your imagination is as good as your talent, and you come up with the cutest paintings!!! Im sure they are thrilled with your painting. I am like you, I can’t just do one craft, I like them all, painting, scrapbooking, sewing, and like you said the hunt is the most fun. Thanks for sharing your beautiful painting.

  5. The thing I love the most about your blog is the eclectic mix. You can take anything and make it a facinating piece of art. Hand painting is beyond my personal talent range so, I bow to your lovely watercolor art !!!
You are so not boring, therefore will never be bored 🙂

  6. Karla, What is that old adage..Variety is the spice of life!!
You have too much talent to limit it to just one thing so just go with the flow.. everything you do is fab!!!!

  7. I HAD to get out of the house & so I booked a seat in Lisa’s class yesterday. HEAVEN!!!! I so had fun with all the lace, & goodies as well as being with Lisa & others “like us”. 9. Karla,
That is just to precious for words!! I’m anxious to pick it up. You did an awsome job of capturing their spirit. and to be ablt to do so, just by a picture is amazing!! I have to go look thru my stuff, and see if I still have your number and give you a call. (and to see my precious grandbabies on your blog on grandparents day just made this grammy happy!!)

  10. You are a woman after my own heart Karla. I too wonder if I had stuck to one medium all my life – how bored would I be? Dabbling in a bit of this and that is so much more fun and challenging. You are a true artist through and through – in more ways than one. Keep on painting, collecting, hunting and playing so we are treated to your wonderful creations – always!

  11. Karla,
We are so alike in that painting was our first love but branched out to other mediums. I am finding after three years of mixed media that experimentation is half the fun. I think sticking to one thing would be most boring. It is the variety of your interests that do indeed make you a success. I love all the avenues you take us down -painting, decorating, collage, collecting, creative living, and especially your light hearted and playful spirit- pure magic!
I love this quite by Picasso in relation to an artist style – God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant, and the cat. He has no real style, He just goes on trying other things.
There are those who have a singleness of focus in their work and there are those of us who are serendipitous enough to embrace variety. Love all you do!

  12. I love your fairy painting Karla! Like you, I get bored with doing the same thing, and am always looking for new things to make. That’s why I’m enjoying your class so much! Take care, Martha
