Flights of Fancy

Sis's family 137-2
We all loved the Kansas City Renfest
on Labor Day weekend during the camp-o-rama family reunion.  Sugarwings, especially.  Although, my husband and I were pretty happy, just following her around and smiling at her happiness. (which just about sums up what our life around here is on a daily basis anyway.. her smiles mean the world to us  we.  We spend most of our time just watching her with goofy, indulgent grins on our faces  She'll either grow up to be secure and filled with well being and love, or an insufferable brat.)

Sis's family 016-1

Sugarwings wasn't the only fairy, my nephew's baby, Kaydence, wore her "toot toot" (tutu) and wings too.

(It brings tears to my eyes to look at her picture, knowing that her daddy is leaving to serve in Iraq, and that he won't be with her for an entire YEAR!)

Sis's family 227-1

My Sissy made these hair garlands for everyone to wear, aren't they lovely? And so is my niece, Shelli.

When Sugarwings saw the bag of garlands, she immediately asked, "Who made these?"  She is so used to everything being hand made around here, it doesn't even occur to her that some people buy such things from stores.  She just assumed that if there was something pretty at our cottage, then someone must have made it.

Sis's family 009-4

Kansas City has a scenic location for their annual event, its in a shady valley, with lots of permanent structures that lend the place an air of authenticity.

And magic.

Sis's family 064-2

Even more magical, seeing it through my fairy grand baby's eyes.

Sis's family 072-1

To her the baby dragon that hatches from this egg, is as real as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

Sis's family 113-4

Of course, I'm every bit as enchanted by the dragon as she is.  And yes, I am one of THOSE people who wear a costume to the festival.  I don't consider myself a Renny or a weirdo, I just think it is fun to wear fairy wings.

Or maybe I am a weirdo?  Who cares?! Life is short, wear fairy wings and be silly and have fun!!

Sis's family 174-3

We all work too hard, we should take some advice from the fairies, and be light-hearted, do some dancing, and be in the moment.  Because those moments go by too fast to waste them.

I'll leave you with a few more  fairy photos.  I hope you get to kick up your heels and have some fun too!

  1. I think you are so right to enjoy every little smile that Sugarwings makes and to let her know that you both love her to pieces. I think kids grow of love. Make her feel secure that is what every child needs. You and your husband are just doing perfect! I even love the photos of Sugarwings, of course you adore the real thing! Great photos again!

  2. Sigh. What a wonderful family you have! What a treat -a blessing -and a joy for Sugarwings to have you and your husband as her ‘fairy grand-parents’! You are being a wonderful roll-model for me. (I am watching closely!) 😉
Good for you to wear fairy wings and garlands in your hair..I LOVE your attitude!

  3. Beautiful post Karla. She will grow up to be a loving and kind person surrounded by all that love and indulgence. Its what I strive to do for my Princess. Lucky her, lucky you! Sprinkles and twinkles of fairy dust your way – Rachaelxo

  4. Hi!!
    I love these pictures–
Your sugarwings looking into the fountain is my favorite. The colors are amazing.
Ohh so yes..the traffic is bad. I know it’s difficult to imagine having a stranger with you, but then one day as I watched the HOV people zipping by at 80 miles an hour with my not moving in my lane–I said hey–ok– it can’t be all bad. And it not!! LOL. Although if ever I felt unsafe I would stop doing it.
I love you’r blog it’s so beautiful..I’m headed back to read some of your older posts! Have a great week.

  5. Sugarwings is a lucky little girl to have such a fun Grandma! I think dressing up is great! My hubby, two sons and myself have been going to the Houston Texas Renaissance Festival for 10 years and 9 were in costume!
    Blessings,
    Lorilee

  6. What beautiful photos, Karla! Love all the costumes, the wreaths, and, of course, sweet little Sugarwings! Such a cutie! She’s so lucky to have wonderful grandparents like you. How sad that your nephew must leave his little sweetie for a year.
Keep on posting & we’ll keep on reading!

  9. Love the photo of your darling fairy tickling the water. One of the things I so enjoy about your blog is that you are lighthearted and fun with or without the costume. Your joy and zest for life shine through in each post.
I hope your sweet one is feeling much better and that you all have a wonderful week!

  10. I love all the sweet fairy photos! Especially the swing photo; if you could crop out the swing, it would look like she was flying. I don’t see anything wrong with wearing fairy wings, especially to a Ren Fest!

  11. oh my goodness, this looks like an event tailor made for your delightful crew. I love the little ticket on the back of her wings…I hope she keeps her delightful sense of style as she grows, what a treasure! everytime I see your adorable sugar wings, I can’t believe just how gorgeous she is…and more so every time…She is absolutely beautiful!

  12. Karla what a wonderful post. I love what you wrote about you and your husband just watching Sugarwings with goofy smiles. That just about sums up what Max and I are like when we have little Riley 2 days a week.. Being a hands on grandparent is a magical experience

  13. TypePad HTML EmailIstn’t that ticket with the flowers cute? It was on a gift from Jessi Nagy and I saved it, knowing that I’d have the perfect spot for it someday.—– Original Message —–

  14. Thank you, thank you, thank you Karla! I recieved my package on Saturday and I found my extra treasures. That was so nice of you. That scarf is just beautiful!!! I was hoping, hoping, hoping when I read that post over the weekend:)

  15. For fear of sounding like Forest Gump, your diary is always like a yummy box of choccies, filled full of gorgeous things to look at!
Sugarwings looks to me like a very happy chid, and I must say that my husband and I are do the same, look at Humbug with dopey looks on our faces. She is so amazing and funny that I can watch her for hours. I’m always being told what a happy, relaxed and confident little girl she is, and my theory is that it’s because she is loved and encouraged — like your sugarwings! I am doing something right, which as a mum is always nice to know!
Hope little one is feeling better now.

  19. Oh, Karla! What a beautiful post. Oh, to have had a grandmother like you when I was growing up. Mine all passed away soon after I was born. Of course, one of my sisters had a theory on why they went to heaven right after I got to earth. Wink. But I have to tell you, besides enjoying your humor, and bits of wisdom, the part about your nephew leaving for Iraq made tears slide down my cheeks. What a great reminder to all of us of the sacrifices that are made on our behalf each and every day.

  20. karla, this post makes me happy! This is what life is all about….not caring what other people think, just having the time of your life and enjoying every moment. It is so wonderful that SW is being raised in an enviornment where happiness is forefront!
    xoxo, Tiffany

  21. Bravo to you Karla, wear your wings proudly! We all need to bring in some inner child happiness to lighten up our lives and dancing along with fairies works for me! Lori

  22. Karla, I am a fellow Kansan living a rural life in NE Kansas! My husband and I went to the RenFest last year for the first time…..it IS a magical experience, isn’t it? I absolutely love SugarWings pics from the RenFest, children make EVERYTHING that much more magical!
THANKS so much for this beautiful, inspiring blog.
    Your new friend, Debby

  23. Oh I love seeing your Renaissance Festival pics. My husband used to play in a musical troupe and I made hair circlets to sell. We spent a lot of time at the one in San Diego. It was fun having a costume and making costumes for the kids as they grew too. Oh this is making me so nostalgic, thanks so much!
